HOLMES, Arthur Garfield, AB, V2527, RCNVR MPK - 07 Sep 1942, HMCS RACCOON - son of Isaiah Jacob and Ethel W. Holmes, of Saint John, New Brunswick.
AB Holmes died when his ship, HMCS RACCOON, which was on convoy escort in the St. Lawrence River off the Gaspé Peninsula, was hit and sunk by two torpedoes from U165. All 37 hands were lost.

Commenced Active Service 02 Oct 1940 HMCS STADACONA - Drafted to STADACONA 03 Oct 1940 as an OS, RCNVR HMCS OTTER - Drafted to OTTER 21 Dec 1940 as an OS, RCNVR. He survived the sinking of HMCS OTTER on 26 Mar 1941. He was an OS at the time of the sinking. HMCS VENTURE - Drafted to VENTURE 27 Mar 1941 as an OS, RCNVR HMCS STADACONA - Drafted to STADACONA 03 Apr 1941 as an OS, RCNVR HMCS PROTECTOR for Gate Vessel - Served in a gate vessel out of Sydney 23 May 1941 to 19 Jun 1941 as an OS, RCNVR NOIC GASPE for Gate Vessel - Served in a gate vessel out of the Gaspe region 20 Jun 1941 - 25 Oct 1941 as an OS, RCNVR HMCS RACCOON - Drafted to Raccoon 26 Oct 1941 as an AB, RCNVR * Rated AB 29 May 1942
