HMCS HARRY DEWOLF 430
Harry DeWolf Class Arctic and Offshore Patrol Vessel
HMCS HARRY DEWOLF was named in honour of Vice-Admiral Harry DeWolf, RCN. A native of Bedford, N.S., Vice-Admiral Harry DeWolf was decorated for outstanding service throughout his naval career, which included wartime command of HMCS ST LAURENT from 1939-40, and later, his 1943-44 command of HMCS HAIDA, known as the “Fightingest Ship in the RCN.”
Built at Irving Shipyard, she was laid down on 08 Jun 2016 and floated up on 15 Sep 2018. On 31 Jul 2020 Harry DeWolf was accepted by the RCN at a ceremony in Halifax, NS, and she was commissioned at Halifax on 26 Jun 2021.
On 03 Aug 2021 HMCS HARRY DEWOLF departed Halifax to transit the Northwest Passage, and return to Halifax via the Panama Canal, circumnavigating North America. During this deployment she circumnavigated North America, participating in Operations Nanook in the Arctic, and Caribbe in the Eastern Pacific and the Carribean Sea, along the way. While in the Arctic, the ship and its crew charted its northern course via the fabled Northwest Passage. A first for the RCN since HMCS LABRADOR'S northern voyage in 1954, HARRY DEWOLF followed the same route taken by the infamous 1845-46 Franklin Expedition, which was lost with all hands in the very same area. After leaving Canada’s North, the ship made its way down the West Coast of North America into the Eastern Pacific. There, HARRY DEWOLF successfully made its first two drug busts on Operation Caribbe, Canada’s contribution to the multinational campaign targeting drug trafficking in the region. HARRY DEWOLF returned to Halifax on 16 Dec 2021
04 Apr 2022 - HMCS HARRY DEWOLF departed Halifax to take part in Op CARIBBE in the Caribbean Sea. She returned to Halifax on 29 May 2022. During this deployment, Royal Canadian Navy sailors and their embarked colleagues from the United States Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment (LEDET) responded to two cases of potential illicit activity, resulting in a total of 375 kg of cocaine being seized and destroyed.

(HDW010) On August 17 2022 while en route to join the maritime task component of Op NANOOK 2022, HMCS HARRY DEWOLF suffered a failure in one of its four main diesel generators, requiring the ship to divert back to its home port, Halifax, Nova Scotia for immediate repairs. The failure was an isolated incident and did not affect any of the ship’s crew members or outside systems. The ship will undergo an immediate assessment and repairs. There is no operational impact to the ongoing Operation NANOOK. The Canadian Maritime Task Group remains on station in the Canadian Arctic, conducting presence patrols and conducting community visits. / / DND - RCN PHOTO (HDW011-HDW012) Article on the delivery of MAX BERNAYS to the RCN and the teething problems of HMCS HARRY DEWOLF // The Halifax Chronicle-Herald 03 Sep 2022 (HDW013) HMCS HARRY DEWOLF photographed during Operation NANOOK 2023 near an iceberg that was estimated to be 25 stories high. (HDW014-0HDW017) Last weekend (9-10 Sep 2023) RCMP and sailors on board HMCS Harry DeWolf had the honour and privilege to visit the historic and symbolic Inuit Nunangat site of Dundas Harbour on Devon Island, Nunavut as a part of a joint Arctic sovereignty patrol. As the month of September is dedicated to reconciliation, we gathered and took a pause to reflect on the lives lost by the Inuit people, as well as RCMP members like Constables Victor Maisonneuve and William R. Stephens, not only at Dundas Harbour but across Nunavut. We continue to learn from our past and are committed to Indigenous reconciliation through meaningful actions. This includes learning and gaining a better understanding of history from an Inuit cultural lens. // Source: CAF Operations Facebook page
