HMCS SANKATY
Prior to the Second World War, the SANKATY was used as a passenger ferry in New Jersey, USA. Partially gutted by fire, she was scuttled and sunk. After laying on the harbour bed for a number of years, the hull was raised and purchased by Mr. MacDonald of Sydney, NS, to be repaired and used as a ferry in NS waters.
At the outbreak of the Second World War, she was requisitioned by the RCN and converted into a Mine Layer and Anti-Submarine Cable Layer. Based at Halifax, she operated in NS and Newfoundland waters until Aug 1945.
After being paid off, she was returned to Mr. MacDoanld and was converted into a passenger and car ferry being re-named "The Charles Dunning". He sold her to the Department of Highways.
Sold for scrap in 1964, she sank on 27 Oct 1964 while enroute to Syndey, NS.
