On 23 October 1940 the YARNELL left the US Navy and was commissioned into the Royal Navy as HMS LINCOLN G42. She arrived at Belfast on 9 November and joined the First Escort Group, Western Approaches Command. She spent the next year escorting convoys from the mid ocean meeting point back to Britain. From September 1941 to February 1942 she underwent a refit at Woolwich. After the refit the LINCOLN was given to a Norwegian crew, and allocated to the Western Local Escort Force, operating on the Newfoundland Coast. In July 1942 she transferred to the operational control of the RCN - keeping her Norwegian crew. She operating in Canadian waters until the end of 1943. She then returned to the UK, where she was placed in the reserve on the Tyne. On 26 August 1944 she was transferred to the Soviet Union, where she was used as a source of spare parts for the eight Wickes class destroyers already in Soviet service."
