COPPARD, John George,
Cdr (July 29, 1966 – March 5, 2012) John passed away
peacefully at home March 5 in the company of family and friends. He is
survived by his father, Dennis; brothers Paul (Andrea) and David (Rita);
sister Pat (Mark); along with nephews Aidan, Alex and Alexei; nieces
Elisabeth, Cate and Sophia; extended family and countless friends. He was
pre-deceased by his mother in 1996. John grew up in Williams Lake, B.C.,
eldest of four children of Dennis and Maureen Coppard, and joined the Canadian
Forces in July 1984, at the age of 18. He attended the Royal Military College
of Canada in Kingston, Ontario, graduating in 1988 with a BA in English. He
later served as a Maritime Surface Officer with the Canadian Navy aboard
various ships in Canada’s Pacific Fleet, including HMCS Provider, HMCS Huron
and HMCS Vancouver, before moving to the Forces’ Public Affairs branch. John
loved the military for its camaraderie and adventure, but in public affairs he
found his niche. He began at CFB Comox, writing news releases about
search-and-rescue efforts and spending his off time skiing, sailing and
kayaking. Later, he became Deputy Director of Naval Communications in Ottawa
with Chief of Maritime Staff Public Affairs, and was deployed on operations in
the Balkans as a public information officer with the NATO stabilization force
in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 2006, John was posted as a strategic
communications advisor to the government of Afghanistan in Kabul, as part of
Canada’s Strategic Advisory Team. John immediately took to Afghanistan, the
country and the people. He loved his work and life in Kabul, from advising
ministers to touring the countryside and meeting new friends from all over the
world. Once he’d tasted the experience, he wanted to go back. So in 2008,
John, now a naval commander, retired from the Canadian Forces and accepted a
civilian posting as spokesman for the senior civilian representative for NATO
in Afghanistan. In the summer of 2009, however, shortly after having signed on
to serve a second term in Afghanistan, he learned he was suffering from a
brain tumour and was evacuated to Brussels for surgery. While he was in
Brussels, his living unit back in Kabul was badly damaged in an early-morning
bombing of NATO headquarters. After the surgery, John returned to Victoria to
rest, recover and get treatment, but though he was often tired from
chemotherapy, he continued to lead an active life. He worked on behalf of the
Conservative candidate in Victoria in the federal election campaign and was
active in the Catholic church, devoting his time and energy to pro-life and
anti-euthanasia campaigns and serving with the Knights of Columbus, while
never neglecting his single malt scotch or the comfy chairs at the Union Club.
His friends and family remember him for his ability to charm people of all
walks of life, his sense of humour, intelligence, wit, kindness, positive
spirit and, above all, his zest for life. Wherever the action was, he wanted
to be part of it. As one of his many friends wrote, “The world is less fun
with his departure from it.” Prayers will be offered Friday, March 16, at
7:00 pm at McCall Brothers Floral Chapel at Johnson and Vancouver streets. A
funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Andrews Cathedral on Saturday, March 17
at 2:00 pm, with a reception to follow at the Union Club. In lieu of flowers,
donations can be made to the Victoria Hospice Foundation (www.victoriahospice.org),
in thanks for the wonderful care provided by the palliative team.

CURRIE, David Wayne,
LCDR - 61, Beaver Bank, passed away January 29, 2008, unexpectedly and
peacefully at home. David was born in Fredericton on April 28, 1946, to Keith
Currie, Kingston, Ont., and Eva Termarsch, Parry Sound, Ont. He is survived by
daughters, Beth Shier, Oakville, Ont., and Alyson Currie, Halifax; and by his
siblings, Robert Currie, Bath, Ont.; Cynthia Young, Caledonia, Ont.; and
Thomas Termarsch, Parry Sound, Ont. Missing their Grampie terribly are Julia
and Paige Shier, Oakville, Ont. He was very happy to have been recently
reunited with his first born child, Jennifer Last, who was adopted at birth.
He is also survived by many loving relatives - aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews,
and cousins by the dozens! He was predeceased by stepfather, Gord Termarsch.
Beth and Alyson wish to express their heartfelt appreciation to everyone who
has provided love and support at this most difficult time, especially to our
mother, Janet Richards, and stepfather, Brian Richards. Also, words cannot
express our gratitude for the presence and assistance of the Hughes family,
Dad's thoughtful and watchful neighbours. Dad grew up in New Brunswick and
Ontario. He experienced many schools, homes and communities which contributed
to his adaptability in life. He exemplified incredible responsibility for his
brother, Bob, and sister, Cindy, during this time. His varied and exciting
childhood might have given him a wanderlust that led to his life as a naval
officer. Dad joined the navy in 1966, fresh faced and excited to sail the
seven seas and get out from behind the butcher counter at Dominions.
Unfortunately, to set sail, he had to give up his long-standing obsession of
beating the county sheriff to the county line while street racing in
immaculately maintained "1957 whatevers"! Dad's 29 year military
career was varied and extensive. While serving for Canada, he often found
himself in a position of responsibility over and above his rank. He enrolled
in ROTP in 1966 and found himself at the top of his class. His only problem
was needles (which would cause trouble when he was required to inject himself
with insulin, due to Type II diabetes much later in life). How many times did
we all hear the story of his "sewing machine effect" when he had to
inject himself with an antidote for nerve gas during training! But that's
nothing compared to when he had to eat goat eyeballs in Turkey as an
ambassador for NATO. From the time he began active service in 1967 to when he
retired in 1996 he had a long lasting impact on military protocol, operations
and training. He served in a number of command and training positions and
earned several service medals and commendations. Some of his commissions
included: Commanding Officer of HMCS Thunder in 1970, Surface Anti-submarine
Warfare Officer in Norfolk, Va., in 1982, Director of Public Policy at the
National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa from 1994-1996. Ever happy to conquer
a new ship, dad served on HMCS Margaree, Thunder, Nipigon and Fraser. Dad also
occupied numerous teaching positions at the Fleet School and Stadacona in
Halifax. He rounded out his career as the Executive Officer of HMCS
Assiniboine and Acting Commanding Officer of HMCS Iroquois. He was happiest
effecting policy and writing speeches, his forte, from 1993 to 1996 in Ottawa.
Even Prime Minister Jean Chretien wrote to congratulate him on his career. In
the late 1980s Dad found his second family in the local stock car racing
community at Scotia Speedworld. As a young man he had torn up the track at
places like Cayuga Speedway in Ontario, and as above, challenged the local
law. This renewed passion grew quickly into a love of the people and the
sport. Dad was able to enjoy this hobby/obsession along with his daughter,
Alyson, who joined him on the track in 1991. He was a respected competitor, a
valued pit mate and dazzled the crowd with a full moon of his checkered boxer
shorts each time he won a race, much to their delight and expectation. When
Dad was not under his or Alyson's car, he could be found all over the pit
putting in his two cents worth and lending parts. Usually the top points
finishers for the year had something under the hood or suspension donated and
usually installed by Dad. Dad took the opportunity to improve his driving
skills at Mosport on several occasions both in the IROC and open wheeled
driving schools. When he was no longer able to race, he continued his
involvement in the sport by becoming the Original (2001) Technical Inspector
for the Carquest Pro Stock Tour. He spent many seasons and long hours on the
road with the Ledwidge family and Mike Caplan, to various Maritime tracks
doing what he loved with his race track family. This family is an extensive
network of diverse individuals, family networks and business partnerships that
Dad was exceptionally proud to be a part of. Dad had a passion for social
action. He was a founding member of the citizens association opposing the
quarry in Sackville. As a long-standing resident of Lakeview Avenue,
Sackville, he fought to preserve the ecology, serenity and quiet of
Springfield Lake and made great strides in bringing the community together in
mind and sprit as he worked tirelessly on improving the Springfield Lake
Recreation Centre and the annual neighbourhood celebration called Camelot
Days. More far reaching, he single handedly tried to save Santa Claus from
misuse in commercials and ads at Christmas. He appeared multiple times in
letters to the editor section of the prominent paper of his current residence.
In these letters he espoused his amazing insight into political and social
matters. His ability to remember, understand, and explain to others the
consequences of past actions and events was remarkable. It is a skill that the
great leaders of our time should attempt to emulate. In his retirement Dad
thoroughly enjoyed living in Beaver Bank near the stream with deer in the
backyard and birds in the trees left to grow wild. He refused to mow his lawn
more than twice a year so he could watch the lupins and wildflowers grow where
a manicured lawn once grew. Above all, he loved the sunlight streaming in his
living room window and the peace and serenity of his home. He also spent many,
many months at the Shier home in Oakville, Ont., helping Beth cope with the
challenges of raising two girls who spent quite a bit of time in hospitals and
doctors' offices. Above all he loved to play with his granddaughters, Julia
and Paige, and shared with them his endless knowledge and wonder for life. It
was one of his greatest delights. He taught his granddaughters to be
thoughtfully inquisitive and playfully engaged with their world. He also
cultivated in them a fierce sense of right and wrong and taught them about
stewardship and activism. He could have given them no better gift. He
smothered them in enough love to carry them through all of their days. Words
cannot express how much this relationship means to the family. Although he was
Anglican and went through the process of converting to Catholicism around the
age of 12, he died a vehement atheist who firmly believed that the body is a
vessel to carry one's soul and we have felt his peaceful loving presence in
the past days. Please join us as we celebrate Dad's life. In honour of his
military past, his memorial service will be officiated by Padre Charlie Black
(Ret'd) in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, Halifax at 14:00 hours (2 p.m.) Saturday,
February 2. Visitation from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today. Following his memorial, as
per his wishes, Dad will be cremated and his ashes returned to the sea that he
loved so much. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made in his name
to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Association.

DAVIES, Harold
Lindsay (Hal), Capt (N), RCN -
Born: Oct 1936, Woking, Surrey, UK Died: 15 Feb 2011, Nassau,
Bahamas - It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Capt(N) Hal
Davies, CD, RCN Ret'd, who passed away suddenly on 15 February, while on
vacation with his wife in the Bahamas. He was the beloved husband of Jean,
proud and loving father of son Stephen Davies (Halifax), his spouse Erin
Horton, daughter LCdr Joanna Davies (Kingston, ON) and brother of Philip
Davies and brother-in-law to Marylin (Terrace, BC). Born in Woking, Surrey, UK
in 1936, Hal moved with his family to Canada in his teens. After graduating
from Trinity College, Toronto in 1959, he ran away to join the Royal Canadian
Navy and quickly became a remarkable leader and strong supporter of the Navy
and all its sailors. 'Captain Hal' had a very distinguished Naval career,
including such highlights as command of HMC Ships SASKATCHEWAN, NIPIGON,
QU'APPELLE and PROTECTEUR, as well as being Commandant of the Fleet School and
Commander Sea Training. He loved the Navy and continued to be a strong
supporter, following his retirement in 1989. He was captain of HMCS SCOTIAN
and was very involved in the HMCS SACKVILLE Memorial Trust. Hal later became
an accomplished consultant in the aerospace and defence sectors and led
Tecsult Eduplus in Halifax. He continued to achieve great success in business
right up until his death. An avid sailor and expert skipper, he led many
sailing crews to victory, not only on the race course, but also in life. He
didn't just lead, he changed lives. A funeral service will be held at 1100 on
March 1st at St. George's Round Church in Halifax, with a celebration of his
life to follow at CFB Stadacona Wardroom. His ashes will be scattered at sea,
at a later date. His passing has left a deep and unfillable void for all who
knew and loved him. He will be forever missed and never forgotten. Fair winds
and following seas. (Toronto Globe and Mail 19 Feb 2011)

DECHAMBEAU, Robert Maynard
(30 Jan 1951 - 05 Apr 2010) - With much sorrow we announce the passing of Bob
on Monday, April 5, 2010 at his home in Victoria, BC. Beloved husband and
friend of Heather MacDonald. Survived by his wife Heather, daughter Bree,
sisters Sharon and Robin and brother Ronald. Bob served his country with
bravery as a fire fighter in the Canadian Navy from 1968 to 1992. He served
aboard the HMCS Huron from 1974 to 1976 and the HMCS Saguenay between 1985 and
1987. He also taught fire fighting at the Canadian School of Instruction.
After his retirement, Bob dedicated himself with enthusiasm to the Vancouver
Island Compassion Society, gardening, diving, and travelling. Inconceivable
that this force of nature died so young. Unconscionable that his heart, so
big, could stop beating." Friends are invited to a come-and-go open house

had five siblings: Michael, Jerry, Madeline (predeceased) Evelyn and Martin.
As a young man, he and his brother Mike, joined the Canadian Navy where he
proudly served during the Second World War aboard the HMCS Uganda. He never
forgot his time in the Navy and in latter life became a member of the legion

life in Kingston, ON. There he met a nursing student named Laura Elizabeth
Shaver. They married in 1954 and began a caring, loving relationship that
lasted for 57 years. John then set his sights on the grocery store business
and with his usual focused determination and exemplary work ethic was driven
to move up the corporate ladder which he did. With his career on track, a
family life followed. Five children were brought into this loving couple's
life; John Joseph Jr., Michael Allan, Gordon Andrew, Marie Elizabeth and Lori
Diane. John (Joe) loved life, people and above all, his family. After retiring
from a corporate life, Joe decided to take a position with the Commissionaires

retirement, his excellent work ethic resulted in a promotion to Sergeant in
the Commissionaires. He enjoyed a busy life which included his passions of
camping, travelling to Hawaii with his wife every year and golfing with his
children. He shot his first hole-in-one at the age of 80. He took great pride
and enjoyment with his eight grandchildren: Faith and Darci Perdue, Ben and
Christopher Holmes, Liam and Aidan Kratschmar and Sophie and Simone Perdue.
Joe set an example to all as to how to live a life filled will love, integrity
and loyalty. Joe touched many lives and was very much loved. This love was
returned to him by the great care he received from his loving, dedicated wife
Betty and by all his children, but in particular his eldest son John who made
sure that his mother and father lived an exceptional life of travel and
camping adventures while remaining in the comforts of their own home
throughout their later years. Joe will be lovingly missed by his wife Betty of
57 years; sons, John, Michael, Gordon (daughter-in-law Holly); daughters,
Marie (son-in-law Erik) and Lori (son-in-law Ron); and grandchildren: Faith,

SMITH, John Lodington
(23 Oct 1924 - 22 Nov 2011) - It is with deep sadness that the family
announces the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather John
Lodington Smith on Tuesday November 22, 2011 at Luther Special Care Home in
Saskatoon. John is predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Phyllis, brothers
Philip, Peter and Walter and sisters Alice Turner and Margaret (Peggy) Bond.
He is survived by his wife Betty (Saskatoon), son Kim Smith (Nassau, The
Bahamas), daughter Robynne Smith (Saskatoon), grandsons Kyle and Ryan Pochylko
(Saskatoon); special friend Scruffy; and numerous nieces and nephews spanning
four generations. John was born in Parksville, BC, the youngest of 6 children.
After 7 years on Vancouver Island the family moved to a farm south of Cupar,
Saskatchewan. At 18 he joined Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve, training
across Canada and became a Meteorologist Technician. He served on the Canadian
Cruiser HMCS Uganda, spending time in the Mediterranean Sea and South
Pacific. In August 1945 the Uganda docked in Victoria, BC to re-fit and
returning to action, but V-Day was declared. Upon returning to Cupar, John and
Walter farmed together on the family land. John completed the Diploma in
Agriculture at the U of S in 1948. In 1954 John married the love of his life,
Betty Rauch from Melville and they had two children, Kim and Robynne. John
believed in community service and was active in the church and community in
Cupar. He spent countless hours with St. Mary's Anglican Church, Cupar Town
Council, Cupar School Board, Royal Canadian Legion, Scouts Canada, Cupar
Curling Club, Cupar Memorial Rink, Echo Lodge in Fort Qu'Appelle, and Shalom
Lodge in Cupar. Following the sale of the family farm in 1977, John continued
his community service. John and Betty were not your typical Snow Birds,
instead spending their winters in Saskatoon to help with their grandsons. Kyle
and Ryan have many fond memories of their Grandpa taking them to bowling,
amusement parks, school activities, and all over Saskatoon and area. After
living most of their lives in Cupar, John and Betty moved to Saskatoon in 2008
to be closer to Robynne, Kyle and Ryan. John was very proud of his grandsons
and would do anything to ensure their wellbeing. John will be most remembered
for his quiet gentle manner and being a gentleman. Those who know him well
would comment that John was an observer and not a man of many words, but when
he had something to say, it was very often insightful and to the point. John
was one of those rare individuals who always put others before self, striving
to make the community he lived in a better place. As a fitting tribute to
John's lifetime of community service, his brain was donated to the Parkinson
Related Disease Research Program. Funeral Services and interment are being
planned for the Summer of 2012 in Cupar. The family wishes to extend heartfelt
thanks and gratitude to people who assisted John with his health issues in the
last few years of his life. Those people include Dr. Szott, Drs. Alex and Ali
Rajput, Dr. McMahon, the staff of the Luther Special Care Home, Home Instead
staff especially Clint who kept Dad laughing and taking him for drives around
Saskatoon, Home Care staff especially Karen and Betty who took such good care
of him. In lieu of flowers the family requests that any donations be sent to
either Luther Special Care Home (1212 Osler St. Saskatoon, SK S7N 0T9) or
Rajput Parkinson Related Disease Research Endowment RUH Foundation. (The Saskatoon Star Phoenix 26 Nov 2011)

determination, and his profound love of the ocean. Jim later became a
paramedic in the HRM and served for twenty-six years until his death. In his
many years as an EMT he saved many lives and even brought a few into this
world. His fellow Paramedics in Musquodoboit Harbour will sorely miss Jim and
his skills. As well as the nurses at Twin Oaks Hospital where he loved working
the CEC Though he loved his career his true calling in life was supporting his
family. He was devoted to making their lives the best they could be. Jim was a
loving father who taught his daughter that love has nothing to do with

WALKER, Leslie, CD
(13 Sep 1918 - 08 Nov 2009) - Peacefully and with dignity, our father
Leslie joined his loving wife Dorothy already at rest, one day after what
would have been their 70th wedding anniversary. Dad was predeceased by his
parents John and Mary and his half brothers Harry, Jack and Walter Waterhouse.
Dad is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law John (Gisela), George
(Claire); grand-daughters Kristin (Gail, Christopher, Alex), Jennifer (David)
and great-granddaughters Mykenna, Emmy and Kerigan. Dad is also survived by
nephew Glen Waterhouse and his family of Surrey, BC. Leslie was born in
Winnipeg and spent his childhood in the original Osborne Village. He attended
Gladstone, Earl Grey and Kelvin schools and shared many interesting stories of
his family life in Fort Rouge. At 14 years of age, dad joined Sea Cadets and
then at the age of 19 he joined the Naval Reserve and while in training on the
West Coast the Second World War began. He immediately volunteered for active
service. At this time in November of 1939 dad and mom were married. He served

debate. He was a good grandfather and was always happy to show his
granddaughters card tricks or the finer points on how to become a good golfer.
Dad enjoyed golf, curling, bowling, billiards and poker nights with his Navy
buddies. Unfortunately he had to give these things up when he lost his sight
to Macular Degeneration. The family would like to express their gratitude to
the staff on Tower 7, Deer Lodge Centre for their respect, compassion and the
excellent care they provided to dad every day. A special thank you to Cliff
Cooke for his visits. Cliff is dad's last remaining Navy poker night friend.
Crossing the Bar Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me! And may
there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea, But such a tide as
moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from
out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after
that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark; For tho'
from out our borne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see
my Pilot face to face When I have crost the bar. Alfred, Lord Tennyson, 1889

held. REST IN PEACE CHIEF'
