ADAMS, Grant (04 Sep 1918 - 25 Jun 2014) - It is with tremendous sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Grant Adams, who was in his 96th year, on June 25, 2014. Beloved husband of Clara 'Mickey' for 71 years; cherished father of Judy, Greg and Roger; devoted 'Papa' to Greg, Jeff, Leslie, Brad, Brooke, Krysten and Katelyn; and adored 'Great-Papa' to Shannon, Allison, Connor, Victoria, Kate, Joshua, Jordan, Fearne and Scarlet. He was a proud WWII Veteran, serving in the Royal Canadian Navy in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean for 5 years. Dad was a pioneer with Canadian Tire Corporation (CTC). He implemented the first self-serve store in Welland in 1958 with a $3500 cheque from A.J. Billes. He was also instrumental in the birth of the CTC credit card, now known as CTC Acceptance. Dad gave us much over the years but the time he gave us in his last days has been our most precious. Our kind, thoughtful, generous, amazing Dad is gone, but he will never be forgotten. We are endlessly grateful for each day we had with him. Thank you to CTC Welland for flying their flags at half-mast in his honour. ANDERSON, David John - of Victoria. Died, August 10, 2010, while visiting in Nanaimo. His wife Betty and family comforted him at the last. Born, Estevan, Saskatchewan, June 11, 1925. Educated in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan, Bear River, Nova Scotia and Regina, Served in RCNVR, 1944-45. At retirement he was vice President, Public Affairs for the Saskatchewan Power Corporation. Predeceased by his Mother, Ruth Frances in 1979, his father, David Nathaniel in 1994 and granddaughter, Michelle King in 1991, and his first wife, Jean; he is survived by the love of his life and treasured friend, Betty Elizabeth; three daughters Patricia Kirkland, Grimsby, Ontario; Nancy King (Paul), Regina, and Lisa Brost (Brad), Grandora, Saskatchewan; three sons David (Donnie Parker), Regina; Mark (Carmen), Strasbourg, Saskatchewan; Guy, Vernon; eighteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren; privileged step-father to four MacIntyres; Dale (Margaret), Nanaimo; David (Catherine Lubinsky), Vancouver; John, Calgary; Catherine (Robert Caldwell), Delta; and four step-grandchildren. ANDERSON, John Marshall - Late of Sidney, BC, passed away peacefully October 29, 2010 at Victoria General Hospital. John was born in Elgin, MB on June 30, 1921 to Victor and Lola Anderson. John is survived by his wife Elizabeth (Betty) of 58 years, five children Justis Tylor, Norma (Tom) Johnson, Lois (Geoff) Wilkie, John (Sachiko) Anderson, Doug Anderson, sister Betty, (Don) Gamble, six grandchildren; Amy, Erin, Dean, Marina, Mei and James and numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents, sisters Muriel and Audrey. During World War II, John served with the RCNVR and later with the Army Reserve. John was employed by the CNR in Winnipeg, MB and has enjoyed 25 years of retirement, most of it in Sidney, BC. He was a member of the Sidney Anglers and enjoyed fishing with his brother in law Don for many years. John's family and dogs were his passion. There will be no funeral service by request. ANDERSON, Robert (Bob) Malcolm - February 18, 2014, Robert (Bob) Malcolm Anderson, passed away peaceful at the Gimli Community Health Centre after a long and courageous battle with diabetes, heart disease and kidney disease at age 67. He will be forever loved and sadly missed by his loving wife, Patricia (Pat) Anderson; children Christine (Kevin Peterson), Sean, Michael and two grandchildren Jon, and Amber. Bob was born October 18, 1946 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and he attended Grant Park High School. Upon completing a stint with the Canadian Navy, Bob took up the mastery of several trades including woodworking, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC. Bob later began working at Manitoba Hydro where he thoroughly enjoyed his work for 31 years before finally retiring for health reasons in 2003. In recognition for his hard work, Bob was seconded to the Department of Manitoba Environment (MOPIA) where he was one of the first to contribute to the writing of the Ozone Depleting Substances Act of Manitoba. Bob began building his retirement home the summer of 1988 in Silver Harbour, Manitoba with his family. Leveraging his hands-on skills, Bob and Pat's "cottage" was a labour of love that took over twenty years to handcraft. Bob spent his later years resting peacefully in the house he'd built for himself. Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing. He also loved to spend time in his shop working with wood, metal, and art. He ceased every opportunity to spend time helping his children, Christine, Kevin, and Sean, with their farm work, and he relished travelling abroad to Korea and Bally to visit his son, Michael. Papa treasured spending time with his grandchildren helping with schoolwork, projects, and extracurricular activities. Papa always made it clear that family was priority. Papa had an unwavering and palpable love for his family, and he was not shy to make it known. Moreover, Bob was a good friend who sought opportunities to help others in difficult times with his kind words and an open non-judgmental ear. The family would like to thank all of the staff at the Gimli Community Health Centre for the outstanding and personalized care he received over the past several years. A special thanks to Doctor R.C. Patel, and his dialysis nurses Betty, Angela, and Lisa for always going above and beyond to provide him with the best care possible. ARCHER, Allan K. - on July 22, 2008 in his 89th year. Allan was an RCNVR rating, an officer in the Second World War and an actuary by profession. His loving partner, Cheryl Robinson, survives him. Predeceased by his wives, Lillian and Madeleine and his sister Muriel. He is also survived by his daughter, Anne and her husband Geoffrey Murray, his stepson, Warren Wolfenden and his wife Lori, and six grandchildren, Willa and Adrian Murray, Ethan and Meghan Wolfenden and Jessie and Jamie Dalton. He was a special friend to Cheryl's family. Allan was a kind, gentle man who enjoyed travel, friends and family immensely. His joy of life was shared with many and will be missed by all who have survived him. The family wish to extend our thanks to the trauma team at Victoria Hospital, especially Donna Hesch, who comforted Allan and his family. ARCHER, Karl T. RCN / RCAF, Maj, (1936-2014) - Passed away peacefully, on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at the age of 77. Predeceased by his parents William Archer and Grace Binger and by his beloved wife Evelyn and his sister Joy. Proud father of Linda (Mario), Bill, Dean (Maria) and his son- in-law Geoff. Cherished grandfather to Benjamin, Christopher and Jenna Evans, Grace and Paul Archer. Dear brother-in-law of Aulda Benzies, Walter Broughton (JoAnne), uncle to Pat Stephens and Steve Stephens (Terry). Karl joined the RCN in February, 1954; he served in the North and across Canada as an operator and electronic technician in the communications research. He was commissioned in the RCAF in 1972 in aerospace engineering, served at HQ's airbases in Ottawa, the Canadian High Commission in London, England and on sub committees at NATO HQ's in Brussels. Upon retirement from the Canadian Forces, he worked for Litton Data Images (1988-1993) and Computing Devices (GVD) (1993-1998). "My greatest support came from the love of my life, my wife Evelyn. I believe any success I may have achieved in life was a result of the support and encouragement of my wonderful family, friends and coworkers. It is my hope that I contributed to the success and achievements of others. To all my family, military comrades, The Friday Night Gang, great gym buddies and the RS Old Timers, Thanks for a great ride and I bid you a fond farewell." ARMITAGE, Douglas John (Jock) (26 Aug 1926 - 03 Dec 2004) - Predeceased by his wife, Betty, in December 1999, Jock is survived by one sister, Marion Coreless, of Williams Lake, B.C. and by six nephews. He was born and grew up in Toronto, where he attended Brown School and U.T.S., and joined the RCNVR in August 1944. Following graduation from U of T in 1948, Jock taught in various schools in England. The rest of his career was spent at St. Andrew's College in Aurora, and he was a founder of Royal St. George's College in Toronto. A funeral will be held on Tuesday, December 28 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Michael and All Angels Church, West Saanich Road, Victoria, B.C. ARMSTRONG, Glenford Whitman (Whit) - Passed away on March 15, 2010 at the age of 71. Beloved husband of the late Nancy Armstrong (nee Simpson). Devoted and loving father to Neil (Sandra), Lindsay (Glen Mellan) and Todd; and step-father to Jennifer Cheffers (Andrew) and Elizabeth Collins (Stephen). Special step-grandfather 'Papa Whit' to David and Alex Cheffers, and John and Grace Collins. Whit was born in Kempt Shore Hans County, Nova Scotia to the late Stanley and Kathleen (nee Wadman) Armstrong. Survived by his brother Raymond and predeceased by his brother Stanley. Whit joined the Royal Canadian Navy as a Tech Apprentice in 1955, commissioned as a SLt in 1967 and retired as LCdr in 1990. He continued his career for an additional 15 years with Transport Canada and Human Resources and Social Development Canada until retiring in 2005 after 50 years of public service. Proud member of the Ottawa Branch of the Naval Officers Association of Canada and the National Defence Headquarters Fish and Game Club. He was also a member of the Rideau Park United Church. Whit enjoyed spending time with family and friends, cooking, golfing, playing bridge and going to Tim Hortons. Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Whit's life on Saturday, March 20 at 11 am at the Beechwood National Memorial Centre, 280 Beechwood Ave, Ottawa. ARMSTRONG, Robert Morley (Bob) - Born Shaunavon, Saskatchewan 28 June, 1926, died February 8, 2007 in Victoria, BC. Served in the RCNVR 1944-1946 as a telegrapher. Employed by Department of National Defence (HMC Dockyard) 1946-1983 as timekeeper, time and material recorder, payroll officer, and dockyard accountant. An avid sports fan, Bob was a strong supporter of Victoria's championship fastball clubs and made many good friends at the ball park. Predeceased by Louise, his wife of 52 years, he leaves sons Lorne (Bev), Garth (Karen), grandchildren Jayne, Danielle and Dale, brother Howard, brothers-in-law Jim (Di) Williamson and Ted (Grace) Williamson and many good and caring friends. ATKINSON, Lorne Ace, RCNVR (08 Jun 1921- 23 Apr 2010) - passed away peacefully at home Friday morning. He is survived by his wife Evie, son Dan (Val), daughter Jan (George) and grandchildren Brian, Leanne and Shay. Ace was born in Vancouver. As a teen he began cycle racing under the guidance of his father, Charlie. He was ranked among the top Canadian cycling athletes of his era (Olympic Games 1948, British Empire Games 1954) and continued to ride aggressively well into his 70's. Lorne's cycling legacy is featured at the BC Sports Hall of Fame. Ace owned and operated Vancouver's Ace Cycle Shop for over 60 years. Competitive and casual bike riders sought his knowledge which was given freely often with sincere, fatherly advice. A true and proud son of Vancouver he will be deeply missed by his family, his friends and the cycling community. A Celebration of Life will be held in the Stanley Park Pavilion, May 16th at 1:00pm. BAILEY, Gillis (Henry), RCN 1943-1945 (22 Jan 1925 - 05 Dec 2015) second generation born in Kelowna B.C. January 22nd 1925 to (Violet) Ruth Bailey Wybrew (nee Hardy) and (Henry) Harry Charles Bailey. Gill is survived by his loving wife Gwen of 18 years, his brother Phillip and predeceased by his brother Fred (Leona, Hawaii) and his first wife (Pauline) Polly Bailey 1928 - 2003 (nee Schwab). Dad's grandparents were Kelowna pioneers Archibald and Julia Hardy. Dad will be hugely missed by his family who are 3rd and 4th generation Kelowna born: Son Gordon (Gayle), grandchildren Leigha; Dyan (Mikko), great grandchildren Liisa & Jeff; Crystal (Bryan), great grandchildren Zoe & Ian; Daughter Barb (Bob) Bassett, grandchildren Robbie (Meagan), great grandchildren Zachary & Anya; Carlie (Kevin) Krampl (nee Bassett), great grandchildren Ethan, Lucas & Kaden; and Craig (Julia), great grandchild Hensley. Gillis was very fond of his loving step family, two of whom resided in 100 Mile House and took great care of him: Wendy Wenting (Trevor Zywine); Rob (Carmen) Wenting; and Andy (Dawn), Wenting on Vancouver Island. Born and raised in Kelowna, Dad had a huge love of the beautiful Okanagan Valley so it was natural that he returned after he served in the Royal Canadian Navy (HMCS Mimico) from 1943 to 1945. He worked for the Kelowna Ferry system; was Marine Engineer on the B.C. coast; a motel owner in the Wells - Barkerville area and a Commissionaire in Vancouver. In retirement he found his dream home, second wife and dancing partner (Gwen), when he settled at 108 Mile Ranch in his beautiful cozy log home backing onto the Walker Valley. He lived his life just the way he wanted, enjoying his love of cars, dancing, classical music, old movies especially Clark Gable, reading and telling stories with everyone especially Navy and Legion buddies (# 261). His great sense of humour got him through life and folks knew him as a "great guy." We would like to sincerely thank all the doctors and nurses from Interior Health 100 Mile, 100 Mile hospital and Mill Site Respite hospital who made dad's last few months very comfortable. There will be a memorial service in 100 Mile House and another at the interment site at the Hardy Family Plot in the Kelowna City Cemetery; to be announced in the spring of 2016. HMCS MIMICO

BEESTON, Lawrence James (Larry), Signalman - Peacefully on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 - with his family by his side, Lawrence (Larry) Beeston passed on into the hands of God. Larry was born on December 3, 1924 in Winnipeg and grew up on "the estate" on Semple Ave. in West Kildonan. Larry graduated from St. Paul's High School in 1942 and went directly into the Canadian Navy. He graduated from signalman school in St. Hyacinthe and served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres of war. After returning from the war Larry experienced what he called the luckiest day of his life. At the Winnipeg Roller Rink, Larry met his life-long love, partner and best friend Laurine. He was attracted to her smile, their similar nature and the fact that she was wearing his favourite colour, green. Larry went into the flooring business and was soon known coast to coast for his integrity, knowledge and easy-going nature. Although he found great success in business, his true passion was his family. Larry revelled in family experiences. His favourite times were Saturday morning coffee, Sunday dinners, summers at Victoria Beach and family road trips. There was always room enough for friends around the table where everyone was considered family. In retirement Larry became totally involved in the lives of his grandchildren. Larry became the soccer mom, nanny, babysitter and taxi driver, anything that allowed him to participate in the lives of those he loved. Larry is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Laurine (Anderson); his children, Dianne (Ken), Larry (Anna), David (Adele) and Paul (Laura); grandchildren, John, Alysa, Brian, Laura, Karen, Jessica, James and Michael; as well as, great-grandchildren, Madison, Natalie, Autumn, Parker and Jack. He is also survived by his younger brother Ted (Frankie). Cremation has already taken place. A funeral Mass and celebration of his life will be held at St. John Brebeuf Parish, 1707 John Brebeuf Place on Friday, January 29 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the St. Paul's High School Bursary Fund or a charity of your choice. HMCS TROIS RIVIERES

BELL, John (Jack) Hartley, Sr. (Dinger) - age 90, passed away at his residence on January 11th, 2016. Jack was born in Penetanguishene, Ontario on February 1st, 1925 to John James Bell and Gwendoline (Hartley). Jack was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces (Navy), serving as a Merchant Marine during WWII and regular force until his retirement in 1976 as the Staff Officer at HMCS Griffon. His distinguished medals included the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and War Medal 1939-45. Jack was an avid motorcycle enthusiast who enjoyed traveling throughout Canada and the US with his wife Ellen. Jack’s Honda Goldwing took them to many wonderful places and they made a lot of new friends in their travels. One of his favorite stops was the bike rally in Sturgis, North Dakota. It was a sad day for him when he had to put away his leathers and boots and put on a pair of sneakers. Jack will be lovingly remembered by his children, daughter Carol West (John) and children David (Peg) and Bob, sons Jack Jr (Sharron) and children John (Rebecca) and Julie (Darren), Rick (Joy) (former spouse Jean, mother of Chrissie (Ricki) and Ricky (Ashley)), Rob (Susan) (former spouse Wendy, mother of Maurissa and Janessa), Brian (Olga) as well as great grandchildren, Kaeleigh, Samantha, Alec, Ava, Riahna, Parker, Paige, & Kendra; sister Gladys and brother Pat, who reside in Traverse City, Michigan. Also mourning his loss are step-children Dawn Crosley, Lou (Val), Robert (JoAnn), Wayne, Tracy (Christine), Richard, Ron, Mark, Jim and their families. Jack was predeceased by his first wife of 37 years, Florence (Biloski) who passed away in 1983, and his second wife of 28 years, Ellen (Crosley) who passed away in 2012, as well as his brother Richard. As per Jack’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service and internment will be held at a future date. If family and friends so desire, donations may be made in Jack’s memory to the TBRHS Foundation – Northern Cardiac Fund.

HMCS GRIFFON (Naval Reserve Unit)

BISSETT, Audrey Allison, VR-4949 - Born: 03 Dec 1901, Audrey Bissett volunteered for the navy as a boy seaman in 1915, and served till 1918. He served in HMCS Shearwater when she escorted submarines CC1 and CC2 from Esquimalt to Halifax, and was onboard HMCS Shearwater at Halifax when the Halifax Explosion occurred. He volunteered again in WW 2, and survived the sinking of HMCS Ottawa H60.

BOWDEN, Keith Albert - Passed away while on vacation with his wife Cathy in Ireland on August 29, 2013. Keith served in the Royal Navy as a 16 year old. He served as a Boy Seaman, going through the ranks and retiring from Royal Canadian Navy in 1997 as Lt. Commander. Keith served most of his career as a submariner. Following his retirement from the Navy after 39 years, he worked at Lockheed Martin in Halifax for 10 years, then worked as Director of Naval Programs for ADGA Group for the past five years. Keith is survived by his wife Cathy; daughter, Jenny (Alan) in England; stepsons, Bill (Karen), Steven (Joy), Donnie (Kathy), all from Sackville; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; siblings, Jean (Chris), England; Pam (Chris), Ireland; Peter (Christine), England; Jeffery (Cynthia), England. Keith was predeceased by his first wife, Elizabeth. Keith and Cathy enjoyed playing gold at many different courses in Florida and around Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Keith enjoyed winemaking, woodworking, and especially his Intarsia work. He was especially proud of the new shed he was building which was being set up for his hobbies. He always loved to cook and entertain. Keith will be missed by his many friends from Embassy Park in Clearwater, Fla., where Cathy and Keith spent their winters and also his many friends in Nova Scotia. A memorial service will take place in Calais Branch 162, Sackville, where Keith was a member, on Thursday September 12 at 1 p.m. Reception to follow. Family flowers only. BRODIE, Arnold Malcolm, Sr. - 78, died Friday at his residence in Brevard. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, he had lived in Reynoldsville, Pa., before moving to Brevard six years ago. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II and was a certified public accountant with Aluminum Company of Montreal. Surviving are his wife, Virginia R. Colton Brodie, two sons, Arnold M. Brodie Jr. o Reynoldsville and Wendell Phillips Brodie of Kingston, Ontario, Canada; a daughter, Lucia Brodie Dogherty of Courtenay, British Columbia, Canada; a sister, Mrs. H. Lovat Dickson of Toronto, Ontario, Canada; and a brother, Alexander B. Brodie of Ayr, Scotland. Memorials may be made to Hospice, in care of Transylvania Community Hospital. BUDGE, Daniel Gilbert (17 Jun 1937 - 10 Oct 2011) - 74, of Halifax, Nova Scotia passed away October 10, 2011 at home. Born in Maniwaki, P.Q., he was the son of the late Marguerite and Lloyd Budge. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1954 and served for 25 years. He retired in 1979. He worked at Sears for 17 years and retired in 2002. He enjoyed traveling, spending time at his cottage in French Cove and he was an avid sports fan. He was a member of the HMCS Sackville, RCNA Mess and ACPO Association where he enjoyed socializing with his many navy buddies. He was a true navy man until the day he died. He will be missed greatly by his darling wife Sheila, extended family and many friends. CAMPBELL, Duncan Hugh, (13 Dec 1924 - 26 Feb 2007) - age 82, passed away on Monday, February 26, 2007 at Royal University Hospital. Hugh was born and raised in Saskatoon, SK. He received his education at Buena Vista and Saskatoon Technical Collegiate. His first job was as a singing telegraph boy for the CNR. In March 1942 Hugh joined the Navy and was on active service overseas until his discharge in November 1945; he remained in the Naval Reserve until December 1952. He then became an automobile mechanic with Early Motors when he met Loree Dimmitt in 1946. They married in 1947 and were blessed with two children. In 1953 Hugh joined the Saskatoon Police Service and through the following 32 years served in all sections of the department concluding his service with the rank of Inspector. Upon his retirement Hugh enjoyed woodworking and the annual winter holidays in Apache Junction, AZ. There he and Loree made many new friends, which enriched their lives. Hugh was a member of the Saskatoon Elks Club and Canadian German Concordia Club. He is a member of Nutana Legion. He was an active volunteer at the Legion and at the Veteran's Village at Sherbrooke Community Centre. Hugh leaves to mourn his loving wife of 59 years, Loree; daughter, Linda McLean of Comox, BC; son, Donald (Karen) Campbell of Courtenay, BC; grandchildren, Crystal, Alexandra and Hugh. He was predeceased by his parents, Donald and Nellie; stepmother, Elizabeth; brother, Donald of Regina, SK; uncles, aunts and relatives in Scotland. CONNOLLY, Edwin Cuthbert - On Christmas Eve, December 24, 2007 in Ottawa, at the age of 95. Born February 2, 1912 in Ottawa, Ed was a man who lived for his family, his friends and his faith. He will be remembered and sadly missed by his loving wife of 64 years, Nora (Murphy). Very proud father of Joan (late Gerard) MacGillivray, Michael (Madelyn Berry), Mary (Michael) Byrne, David (Nancy Devine) and Nora (Andrew) Gross; cherished grandfather of Martha, David, Jennifer, Patrick, Michael James, Kate, Erin, John, David, Lindsay, and Busman to Geoffrey and Sarah; and great-grandfather of Matthew, Elizabeth, Julia, Isaac and Ethan. Predeceased by his parents, Patrick and Josephine (Macdonald) Connolly and his brothers, John of Ottawa and Charles of Toronto. As a young man, in 1930, he was the Eastern Canadian Junior Single Tennis Champion. In 1932, he won the International Intercollegiate Downhill Ski Race and in 1934 the Canadian Intercollegiate Downhill and Slalom Ski Races for Queens University. He played competitive tennis out of the Ottawa Lawn and Tennis Club. Upon graduating from the University of Ottawa, he went on to Queens University and was president of the Commerce Club in 1934 and 1935. During the Second World War Ed served on the Quesnel, a corvette on convoy duty. While posted in Halifax, he met and married Nora Murphy. His employment years were spent largely with the Department of National Revenue as a chartered accountant, retiring in 1977, as Director General of the Tax Appeals Branch. They lived in Halifax, Regina and Ottawa and spent summers in Nova Scotia at Hubbards. Thank you to the nurses at the Civic Hospital and the staff at the New Edinburgh Square. Friends may visit at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home, 1411 Hunt Club Road at Albion on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral will be at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church on Saturday, December 29 at 9:30 a.m. Interment to follow at Notre Dame Cemetery. He leaves behind his loving wife of 63 years, Hazel (nee Wilson). Cherished father of Richard Coughlan (Louise) and Wendy Hunt (Brian). Treasured grandfather to Kristen Anderson (Craig), Alex Hunt, Tara Campbell (Josh), Robert Hunt and Ashley Coughlan. Proud great-grandfather to Eadey Anderson and Reese Campbell. John's first career was in the Navy where he served for 24 years, followed by 24 years as a Civil Servant for the Federal Government, for a total of 48 years of public service. CROFTON, Patrick Dermott, LCdr (29 May 1935 - 05 Jan 2016) - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Patrick. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 58 years Patricia, 4 daughters; Marietta (Greg), Virginia, Susanna, Tessa (Steffen) and 8 grandchildren; Kel, Blake, Taylor, Mika, Hannah, Piers, Marissa and Marcus. Dearly missed by brother Mark (Jane) and sister Sharron. Predeceased by father Dermott and mother Doris. Pat was born on Saltspring Island BC in 1935, oldest son of a larger pioneer family which owned and operated the Harbour House Hotel (1916-1964). A true athlete, he excelled in rugby, tennis & boxing as a young man but his passion for all sports continued his entire life. The world stopped for NHL playoffs, Olympic Games and Grand Slam Tennis. He would have been so pleased that Milos Raonic beat Roger Federer in the Brisbane Final this past week! After graduating from University School (now SMUS) and Royal Roads Military College, Pat became a proud member of the Canadian Military, serving on a variety of Canadian ships as Navigating Lieutenant, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant-Commander, CD (Canadian Forces Decoration). It was during his second trip to England on defence training at Greenwich that he was encouraged to call on the younger sister of the family Doctor from Saltspring (Dr. Ivor Williams). A month later Pat proposed marriage to Patricia Williams and brought her home to Canada. Thus began 58 years of love and happiness for “The Pats” as they were called by both family and friends. Upon leaving the Canadian Navy Pat worked the family farm and spent countless hours driving and supporting his four daughters in their sporting endeavours (and weekends at horse shows), long-remembered marching down the sides of field hockey pitches shouting encouragement and writing briefs of the games…even when not the coach! The call to community service was strong with Pat. Throughout the 1970’s he supported and campaigned for many political Candidates at all 3 levels of Government before deciding to seek a role in Municipal Gov’t himself. From 1980-1984 he sat as an elected Alderman for the Municipality of Saanich. He truly enjoyed his capacity to participate in the future of Saanich’s growth at a time when many changes were occurring. He was always happy to take a phone call from a Saanich resident in the evening, discussing suggestions or concerns with equal heart. Some daughters not so happy with phone use. 1984-1988 Pat was elected to the 33rd Parliament as the Member of Parliament for Esquimalt-Saanich. A big change for the Pats, with a condo to maintain as well as the homestead in Saanich, flights back and forth every second weekend from Ottawa to stay in touch with both family and community events. They enjoyed this time immensely, meeting new friends of all political stripes and reconnecting with old Navy friends, Some of his most memorable achievements include: Chair of the Standing Committee on National Defence. Member of the Special Joint Committee on Canada’s International Relations. Member of the Standing Committee on External Affairs & National Defence. After retirement from politics Pat continued to participate in the local Community, serving on various local boards including Oak Bay Lodge, Camosun College, Eldercare, Pearson College and Commonwealth Games Society to name but a few. He has been a proud member of the Victoria Rotary Club (1991) and Victoria Golf Club (1973). The Pats are big supporters of local charities and always happy to participate in fundraising activities. They have also been very active in their church, St Peters St. Pauls. Pat made a huge impact on the lives of many. He was always a willing ear to a budding politician, young entrepreneur, friend or family member seeking advice or just a kind word. He will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure to know him and especially to his grandchildren, nieces, nephews and grandnephews who looked to him as a wonderful mentor. Thank you to both their wonderful friends as well as cherished neighbours at Mariner’s Landing that have added so much to their lives. CROUCHER, Selby Claude (Sam), CPO1, CD (19 Feb 1944 - 28 Mar 2010) -age 66 of Scotch Village, passed away March 28, 2010, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Born in Long Island, NL., he was the son of the late Victor and Clara (Fiefield) Croucher. Sam joined the Royal Canadian Navy in March 1963, retiring in August 1996 with the rank of CPO First Class. He sailed on over a dozen ships during his naval career. He was Cox'n on the Protecteur during the Gulf War, and was also Cox'n of NEU(A) and Cape Scott. Sam was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Hants County, Branch 9 for several years. After his retirement, he cherished time spent gardening and with his wife and family. He enjoyed woodworking and planning the annual Croucher family BBQ, an event he was very proud of. DAVEY, William Arthur (Bill), Lt (N), CD, RCN - 79, Halifax, passed away at home in the early hours of August 2, 2012. Born Feb 20, 1933 in Charlottetown, P.E.I., he was the son of the late Henry and Florence (McInnis) Davey. Bill joined the RCN in 1949 and served in a number of naval ships and shore establishments and loved his life in the Navy. Upon retirement he became involved with tax preparation and for a number of years volunteered his time with the Canada Revenue Agency. He was a member of the N.S Naval Officers Association and the Canadian Naval Memorial Trust. He was a long time member of St. Stephen’s Roman Catholic Church where he was a founding member of Knights of Columbus Council #8666 (4th degree). Bill is survived by wife, Heather Fraser-Davey; sister, Sandra (Vernon) Murray; brothers, John (Lorna) and Donald (Kathy), many nieces, nephews, and their children and sister-in –law, Gail Evonic. Cremation has taken place, no visitation by request. A funeral Mass will take place at St. Stephen’s Church, 6032 Normandy Drive, Halifax, on Tuesday, August 7 at 10 am. Family flowers only. DUNCAN, Charles Miller (Chuck) 18 Nov 1935 - 13 Jan 2016) - It is with great sadness we announce that Chuck was taken from us suddenly after enduring complications with lung illness. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 52 years, Diane; their children, Gina (Dan), James (Tracey) and their grandchildren, Steven and Cassidy. The care given by the ACU nursing staff and ER of the Saanich Peninsula Hospital was much appreciated. Chuck was predeceased by his parents, James and Alice, five brothers, and two sisters. He is survived by his sister, June (Mike) and several nieces, nephews and cousins, close to his heart. He had a true love for all animals, but dogs were top of his list. He will be missed by all his dog-lover pals at the park for sure. He was known for a good sense of humour and a caring attitude. His Military (Navy) Career from 1956-1987 took him on a road from an Able Seaman to a man commissioned from the ranks to Lieutenant (N) when he retired. He was well respected in every position given him in the Canadian Armed Forces, whether on a ship, Army or Air Force Base. He was well-liked at CFB North Bay as the Base Exchange Officer. Chuck and Diane met in Toronto, Ontario, where they were both born and raised, and married on August 31st, 1963. They moved to Victoria, BC where he served on the HMCS Glasgow. Gina was born, and when she was 7 months old, he was posted to England for submarine training. After nearly three years at HMS Dolphin, in Portsmouth, he was posted back to Victoria, BC, where James was born. During his career the family was posted to BC, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and England. Chuck also completed a tour of Peacekeeping Duty in Ismailia, Egypt in 1979. He and his family enjoyed globe-trotting for the most part, but his duties often took him away from the family for long periods of time, which was very unpleasant. After his military career, and back in Victoria, he worked in retail part-time, until his young Autistic granddaughter, Cassidy, was in elementary school. He then took on full responsibility for teaching/mentoring her. Due to his loving attention, Cassidy has surpassed all expectations of her teachers, and those who have known her. Steven and Cassidy have had a close relationship with Chuck, and enjoyed many discussions about the world, sports, news, and their own individual talents. They will miss him always. A Celebration of his life will take place at First Memorial Funeral Services, 4725 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC - at 2pm on Saturday, January 23rd, 2016. "Ready, Aye, Ready" Chuck!

FERGUSON, James Stirling (02 May 1947 - 22 Jan 2016) - James was one of a few individuals who actually lived a fascinating life of travel and adventure, spiced with excitement, demanding work, and filled people he admired and respected from around the world. It all began in Ottawa growing up with his sister, Janet. Here he joined the Sea Cadets as a young teen, which led to his career in Royal Canadian Navy submarines. By 1978 he was the commanding officer of HMCS Okanagan - he was thirty-one. James and his O-boat were engaged in many taskings, including clandestine operations in the shadowy world of the Cold War. Family and friends heard lots of sea stories but never any about what he was really doing until long after it was public knowledge. On retirement from the navy in 1981, James moved to the west coast and became vice-president of International Submarine Engineering Research Ltd. His civilian career flowed from his time in military submarines. Now he was in the world of remotely operated and autonomous submersibles, designed and built for government and military applications. This career absorbed and captivated James from day one and, even after retiring in 2013, he continued as a consultant to companies needing his expertise. James is survived by his wife, Julie; his children, Alex (Erika) and Lindsay (Michael), three grandkids - Ariana, Liam, and Saige; his sister, Janet (John); nephews and nieces and their children; many cousins; and a multitude of colleagues, many of whom are now friends. James will be missed. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate in James's name to his favourite charity - the Cardiac Care Campaign of the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation.

FERGUSON, Maurice Bryce (Moe), Mar Eng - (14 Nov 1942 - 16 Jan 2016) - Passed away peacefully at his residence on Saturday, January 16, 2016. Maurice Bryce (Moe), at the age of 73 years. Much loved son of Bryce and Vera Ferguson. Beloved husband of Judy Ferguson. Cherished father of John Ferguson (Bonnie) of Perth, David Ferguson of Dartmouth N.S., Terri Hough (Doug) and Carla Ferguson (Michael) of Brockville. Fondly remembered by his grandchildren Jessica and Scott Johnson, Breton and Tyler Ferguson, Emma Birtch, Veronica Ferguson, Garrett Hough and Amber Birtch. FIRTH, Raymond Herbert In his 65th year of Dartmouth, passed away March 28, 2010, following a courageous battle with cancer. Loving son of Herbert Charles and Helen Caroline Firth. Survived by his partner in love and life, Mary Lou Hansen. Also survived by brothers, Donald (Melanie), James (Susan), David (Barbara), Michael (Lina), Terry and one sister Nancy (George). Dear father of Yvette (Jim), Kim (Eric), Jevon, Jason (Jacinda); several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Raymond joined the Navy in 1965 and retired as a qualified Radar Tech CPO 2nd Class in 1983. During his military career he served on board the following ships and submarines, MS Preserver, Huron, Ojibwa, Onondaga and the Iroquois. Raymond began a second career with the Federal Public Service working in Ottawa and Halifax as a DSSM Technical Engineer. Raymond enjoyed golfing and he was professional scout for the OHL. A memorial service was held on Thursday April 1stDarthmouth, Nova Scotia. In memory of Raymond, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. The Ontario family held a memorial service March 30th.

GARDINER, Leslie, Leading Stoker - Leslie enlisted in Winnipeg in 1942. He spent three years aboard two RCN destroyers, HMCS Columbia and HMCS Assiniboine, shepherding convoys in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean. Leslie moved to Lethbridge shortly after the war and lived there until he passed away in 1979.

GILLESPIE, Gordon Duncan, CWO, RCN - July 18, 1924 - Hamilton, ON, December 15, 2015 - High River, AB - of Calgary, Alberta passed away peacefully on December 15th, 2015 in his 92nd year. Gordon was a war veteran who served with the Canadian Military over a period of 3 decades, mainly at bases in Hamilton, Halifax, and Greenwood, NS as well as on board the HMCS Bonaventure, Quinte, Terra Nova and the Bras d'or Hydrafoil 400 Project. He pursued his love of flying well into his retirement in Greenwood and Calgary. In the early 70s he turned his focus to establishing "The Powerhouse" (a small engine sales and service shop) near Greenwood, N.S. before retiring again in the early 90s after which time he followed his children and grandchildren across the country to Ottawa and Calgary. Throughout his life he spent countless hours participating in charitable activities with the Masons, Lions and also with the Calgary Air Museum on a few projects. Gordon was born in Hamilton on July 18th, 1924, the son of James and Eva (Colbourne) Gillespie and was also predeceased by his beloved wife of 60 years, Doreen (White) and their infant son Ronald. He will be missed by his brother Roy, daughter Debby (Richard) and son Daryl (Kari), grandchildren Katie and Andrew, as well as extended family across Canada. No formal funeral service will be held as his wishes were to have a burial at sea. In living memory of Gordon Gillespie, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park. GRAHAM, Stephen P., RCN, PO1 (18 Apr 1951 - 21 Dec 2015) - It is with deepest sadness the family of Stephen Paul Graham announce his passing in Victoria, BC. Born in Saint John, NB he was the son of the late Ronald E. Graham and the late Norma J. Nixon (Graham, Bunker). Stephen graduated from Saint John Vocational School in 1972. He joined the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve in Oct. 1969 and the regular Navy in April 1974, retiring with the rank of Petty Officer First Class in May 1998. In his 28 years with the Navy Stephen served on ten ships starting with HMCS Brunswicker (land based) as a Boatswain. He enjoyed the outdoors and earned his Queen's Scout in 1967. He was an avid hunter both in BC and back home in NB on the Family homestead. His passion was his 1969 Harley Davidson Sportster that he fully restored with the help of his friends and co-workers at Phoenix Cycle. Other interests include; fishing and the smoking of pacific salmon, black powder shooting, music, reading & cooking. Stephen is survived by his son Leslie (Karen) Graham of Shawnigan Lake, BC; sisters Debby (Rod) Fisher of Calgary, Alberta, Linda (Jack) Oliver of Saint John, NB; brother Rodney Graham of Saint John, stepmother Mary Graham of Saint John, stepsisters Tina (Paul) O'Neill, of Saint John, and Kelly Anthony of Ottawa, Ont; grandchildren Eva and Jack of Shawnigan Lake, as well as many aunts, uncles, nephews, grand-niece and nephew, and cousins. Stephen also had many friends and acquaintances in both British Columbia and New Brunswick. GRANT, G. Edwin, RCNVR (19 Sep 1923 - 19 Jan 2016) - A Veteran WWII, suddenly passed away in his 92nd year in his home on Tuesday, January 19, 2016. Ed of Bramalea leaves behind two sons, Larry and Phil who will dearly miss him and one brother, Russ Grant of Ottawa. His wife, Georgene Cole, of 30+ years predeceased Ed's death over 20 years ago. Ed was born in Espanola, a northern town of Ontario where he grew up in the woods and enjoyed fishing and swimming in the nearby rivers and lakes. Ed took up acting in stage plays during his university years. He joined the RCNVR and became an engine room Artificer on the HMCS Cape Breton, a River class frigate. His ship was on duty patrolling for enemy submarines during the Normandy landings also termed as D-day. He lived a full life and savored much good friends and good times including being a passenger on his son's Harley Davidson motorcycle in his later years. He took enjoyment in his retirement gardening tomatoes and fishing whenever he could. Visitation will be held on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2016 at Andrews CFC (8190 Dixie Rd., Brampton, 905-456-8190), from 2-4pm and 6-8pm. HAMILTON, Robert John, CPO2 (1933-2016) - It is with great sadness that the family of Robert John “Bob” Hamilton, 82, of Lunenburg, announces his passing on Friday, February 5, 2016 at the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in Welland, Ontario, he was a son of the late Archibald and Leona (Ford) Hamilton. He served all of his working life in the Royal Canadian Navy, retiring as Chief Petty Officer, 2nd Class. Bob was a faithful and active member of St. Norbert’s Roman Catholic Church in Lunenburg and a lifetime member of the Atlantic Chief Petty Officer’s Association. Bob was involved in all areas of minor sports and was an avid walker. During his working life, Bob and Betty lived in Dartmouth and upon retirement moved to their home on Caribou Lake in Upper Cornwall. HIGGIN, Randall (Randy) - 84, of Hantsport, passed away Sunday, April 15, 2012 in the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born in England, he was the son of the late John and Bertha (Shepperd) Higgin. He was a veteran of the Second World War and served with the Royal Canadian Navy for 20 years (1945 - 1965). He was later employed with Canadian Keyes Fibre, Hantsport for 24 years, from where he retired. He is survived by his wife, Hilda (Millett) (Jodrey) Higgin; step-children, Gerald Jodrey, Joan (Jodrey) Carey and Dale Jodrey; many step-grandchildren, step-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. HINDS, Jim - It is with great sadness that the family of Jim Hinds announces his passing on July 18th, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer. Jim died peacefully and with dignity at Bluewater Health, Palliative Care at the age of 72. Jim was born in Guelph and moved to Sarnia in 1948 where he lived till he joined the Navy in 1954. Jim had an outstanding Naval Career, 25 years in the Royal Canadian Navy of which 12 years were spent in submarines. He served as Chief Electrician in the Canadian Coast Guard for 19 years. He retired in 1996. Jim returned to Sarnia in 1997 where he married his highschool sweetheart Doreen Trowbridge. Jim was an exceptional cook and loved to entertain, his family/friends were always treated to delicious food and fascinating tales of his adventures on the high seas, Jim will be greatly missed by all that knew him including his Tim Horton buddies who shared many early morning coffee's. Jim is survived by his wife of 11 years Doreen, his daughter Karen Boomgaars (Joe) British Columbia, and Cyd Le Page (Daniel) of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and granddaughters Michelle Philips and Candis Le Page. Jim is predeceased by his late wife Dawn (McLeod) 1996. Survived by his stepchildren and grandchildren Bert Robertson (Cindy), Sara and Ben, Stephen Robertson (Janet), Thomas and Kevin and Rene Robertson-Potisk (Ray) of Edmonton. Jim was affectionately called "Pops" by his grandchildren and they will miss him very much. HULLEY, KennethCharles, CPO, 3604, RCN - Born: 14 Oct 1921, Lethbridge, Alberta. Son of Charles Hulley and Louisa (née Appleton) Hulley. He served in the RCN on the corvettes Timmins and Napanee and the destroyer Assiniboine, escorting convoys across the North Atlantic. After the war he attained the rank of Petty Officer.  Kenneth died in the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax, Nova Scotia on 18 Apr 1945 from injuries received in a car accident outside Halifax. He was buried in the Mountain View Cemetery, Lethbridge, Alberta.

HUSTON, Meredith Stewart - born March 16, 1919, passed away peacefully at Rideau Park Personal Care Home, Brandon, on February 5, 2016. Meredith was born in Rossburn, MB. He was married to his wife, Sylvia, on August 23, 1941 in Halifax, NS. He is survived by his wife of 74 years, sons John (Florette) of Brandon, MB, Grant (Cathy) of Calgary, AB, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, as well as four step-grandchildren. He always put family and faith before himself. After his military career in the Navy, serving on the HMCS Hespeler in the Second World War, he obtained his degree in Agriculture from the University of Manitoba. Meredith retired in 1980 after a long career with Manitoba Pool Elevators. In retirement, Meredith and Sylvia enjoyed travelling to many places around the world, spending time with family and friends. They moved to Brandon in 2009. Meredith was predeceased by brothers Irwin and Harris and sister Alvyra. A Memorial Service will be held at Central United Church, 327 8th Street, Brandon on Thursday, February 11, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. He was a wonderful and loving husband, father and grandfather. Beloved husband and best friend of Carol Anne Jeffers (nee Walser) for 51 years. Loving father of William (Jacqueline) of Toronto, Daniel (Gina) of Whitby, Jennifer Savel (Michael) of London and James (Angela) of Mississauga. Proud Grandpa of Emily, Bryan, Molly, Maggie, Grace, Jake, Nicholas, Katie, Lucas, Cameron, Morgan, Isla and the late Audrey. Beloved brother- in-law of Daniel (Bridget) Walser, Blair (Nancy) Walser, Mary Jane Alexander (Bill), Pauline, Paulette, Barbara, Elizabeth and Mary Walser. Bill graduated from CMR (1961) and RMC (1963) and served with the Royal Canadian Navy through postings to HMCS Crescent and HMCS Kootenay until June 1966. He then began a career as Mathematics Teacher, Head of Department and Mathematics Consultant for the Durham Board of Education. In 1980 he joined the Nuclear Generation Division (NGD) of the Production Branch of Ontario Hydro as a Technical Supervisor and then as Technical Superintendent. In the 1990s he assisted in developing a program for outplacement of professional staff. Bill retired in 1993 and then accepted a position as Head of Mathematics for Durham Region Separate School Board. He was proud that six of his students graduated from RMC. Bill was a dedicated member of the Knights of Columbus, a Fourth Degree Knight, Monsignor Bench Assembly 0878 of Durham Region. He was a Charter Member and Past Grand Knight of Council 8611 and served as District Deputy of District 36, 1991-1993. With thanks to Dr. M. Easterbrook, the Upper Grand Family Health Team, the 2nd Floor staff of Groves Memorial Community Hospital and the many PSWs from the Red Cross Care Partners for their dedicated and loving care. KERR, Garth Corbett - After a long and fulfilling life, Garth Corbett Kerr passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 17, 2015, at the age of 91, with his loving family at his side. After 62 years of marriage, Garth was recently predeceased by his wife and life partner, Paule Marie (nee Decaire), on August 20, 2015. Garth has a special place in his children's lives and hearts, Charles, Jeffrey and Margaret (Southall). The greatest joy in his life was his grandchildren, Amanda, Ben, Caitlin, Natalia, Avery, Lenny, Megan and Eric. Their relationship and love for him was affectionately expressed by the nickname "Bampi". Garth was born in Crystal City, Manitoba on December 1, 1924 to Stanley Stanton and Sarah Emma (nee Corbett) and also predeceased by his elder brother Chuck. Garth joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1942 as a communication telegrapher with the Escort Group 27 protecting ships in the Atlantic. He served on a minesweeper, a corvette, and finally, the HMCS Coaticook, a frigate until the end of the Second World War in 1945. Upon returning to Winnipeg, after the war, Garth graduated as a Chartered Accountant and secured a position with WD Love and Company. He went on to become a senior partner but by the mid 1970s he surprised us all. Garth was always a very conservative man but decided to take a risk. He left the accounting firm and with his partner Harvey Williamson, purchased Arctic Ice Co. Ltd. Arctic Ice was a business in transition. The business relied on industrial customers, meat packing plants and railroads. Garth built a new plant in Winnipeg and a new plant in Calgary utilizing the latest ice manufacturing equipment. The market was now all about growing the "party ice" business that we all know. Under his leadership, Arctic Ice flourished. Garth was also very active with St. John Ambulance and the Khartum Shriners of Winnipeg. The friends, social connections and charitable rewards were an important part of his life. The family would like to express our gratitude and heartfelt thanks to the staff at Victoria Hospital and Tuxedo Villa for their professional and compassionate care. KING, Kenneth Richard, CPO1, OMM, CD, SSM - 61, Dartmouth, died peacefully at home with his wife by his side on December 2, 1999, after a battle with cancer. Born in Windsor, Ont., he was a son of the late Richard and Olive (Titus) King. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy after leaving school on May 2, 1956. He retired from the Royal Canadian Armed Forces (Navy) on November 26, 1993 at the rank of Chief Petty Officer First Class as a Marine Engineroom Artificer after serving 36+ years. Since his retirement he has enjoyed a number of trips, including one across Canada, Yukon and part of Alaska, plus another big one to the West Coast and Western USA. He especially liked the giant Redwoods and Dequoia trees in B.C. and California and the giant Saguaro cactus in New Mexico and Arizona. He loved to spend the summer months out at his lake property on Porters Lake, where he enjoyed playing cards, swimming and visiting with family and friends. He really enjoyed light classical music. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 31 years, the former Sonja Rugland; sons, David A. (Olive) King, Eastern Passage; Patrick R. King, (Sheila Thompson), Dartmouth; grandchildren, Melissa, Amanda, Beverly, Peter; sisters, Joyce (Wayne) Raddatz, Petersburg, Mich.; Mildred (Jim) Clelland; brother, Edward (Yvonne) King; niece, Marlene (Fern) L'Heureux and their families, all of Windsor, Ont. Born November 17, 1934, in Stratford, Ont., he was the son of the late Andrew and Jean (Stewart) Layden, and stepson of the late Andy Hlatki. Bill served as a member of the Canadian Armed Forces for 37 and a half years and was a very proud submariner. Born June 28, 1935 in Sydney, NS, Charlie was the son of the late Thomas and Leoncie (Doublett) Ley. Retired from Michelin Tire Canada, he devoted much of his spare time to the Lions Club, the Knights of Columbus and the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets and was recognized by the Province of Nova Scotia for his "Exceptional Volunteer Service". Born to Nina and Paddy McKee in 1935, Fred grew up in Point St. Charles, Montreal, Que. In 1952, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy as a Signalman and was a qualified Navy Diver; he retired in 1985 as a Chief Petty Officer 1st Class. In 1980, he was selected as the Maritime Command Chief Petty Officer, and in 1982, he was selected as the Canadian Forces Chief Warrant Officer at National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa, having the distinction of being the first sailor to hold that post. In the last year of service, Fred served as the Cox'n for the 75th anniversary of Navy Tattoo which traveled across Canada. Of all the jobs Fred held in the navy, he always stated his favourite was his tenure as the Cox'n onboard HMCS Algonquin. In 1980, he was appointed to the Order of Military Merit in the grade of Member, and in 1982, was appointed to the Order again, in the Officer grade. In 1987, Fred was commissioned as a Lt. (N) in the Cadet Instructor List and was employed as the Regional Cadet Sea Training Officer Atlantic Region Headquarters in Halifax, where he earned a Vice Chief of Defence Staff Commendation for his hard work and dedication to Sea Cadets. He retired once again in 2000, achieving the rank of Lt.-Cmdr. "Retirement" was not a word in Fred's vocabulary; he had a passion for history and the navy, and attended university to further his education. He was a founding member and president of the Atlantic Chief's and Petty Officers Association, where his first project was the famous sailor statue which is currently displayed at the Maritime Museum on Halifax's waterfront. Fred was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Centennial Branch; the Admiral Desmond Piers Naval Association, and was very active in the Masonic Lodge, where he was the Past Master of Woodlawn Lodge 131 and Past District Grand Chaplain for Second Halifax County. Fred was also the Head Curator and Chief Archivist for the HMCS Sackville until his illness forced him to step down from that position. In addition to his other activities, Dad was a fitness buff; he loved long distance running. He ran two marathons and once ran the Cabot Trail. Traveling was another one of Dad's passions and he loved to drive his beloved Cadillac. He and Mum often would just take off and tour the Maritimes, visit friends in Florida or family in Quebec. Of all the places Dad traveled to, he had a particular fondness in his heart for the beautiful scenery and peacefulness of Fredericton Junction, N.B. Fred is survived by his beautiful and loving wife of 48 years, Bertha, who cared for his every need. Because of Bertha's tireless devotion and strength of character during his battle with cancer, Dad affectionately referred to her as his own "Saint Bertha of Langley". Fred is also survived by his two devoted and doting sons, Michael and Scott; daughter-in-law, Tanya; grandson, Thomas; brother, George and sister-in-law Anne; sister, Joyce Schaaf and brother-in-law Norbert. Fred was close to both his siblings and the family would especially like to thank them for their unwavering support during this difficult time. The family would also like to thank the many nurses and doctors at the QEII Palliative Care Unit. Dad achieved so much in his life, however he told his family that he did not want to be remembered for the accolades and accomplishments he received. He wanted to be remembered for what was inside his heart. He was a very humble, generous and thankful man who loved God, touched many lives, helped many people and loved his family dearly. He was a member of Steven's Road United Baptist Church, and was baptized into the faith in 2006. The family takes hope that Dad is now at rest with his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. We will meet you again in the sweet by and by, we love you so very much Dad. "Do not mourn that such a man died, but thank God that such a man lived". Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, with a Masonic service to be held at 6:30 p.m., both in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. Memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday in Steven's Road United Baptist Church. A reception will follow in the church. Private burial in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens.

LLOY, Nellie Jean, WRCNS (Wrens) April 13, 1924 - January 14, 2016 - 91 of Halifax, passed away peacefully at the QEII hospital January 14th, 2016. Born in Toronto, she was the third daughter of Alexander & Elizabeth Forrest. Predeceased by loving husband Gerald and sisters Mary and Euphemia. She will be deeply missed by sons Bruce (Patricia) of Stony Plain Alberta, Alex (Rosemarie) of Kincardine Ontario, Andrew (Kathy) of St John's Newfoundland and daughter Marilyn, Halifax. Also forever missing their Grandmother will be Carolyn, David, Kevin, Amanda, Will, Cheryl, Erin, Allison and 11 adoring great- grand children. Jean moved to Halifax in 1942 to join the WRENS where she worked as secretary to the East Coast Command at the age of 18. Jean met her loving husband of 64 years at West End Baptist Church and once married went on to be founding charter members of Birch Cove Baptist Church. In line with Jean's wishes cremation has already taken place but a celebration of life will take place Friday January 22nd from 6-9 at Snows Funeral Home 339 Lacewood Drive. Funeral service will be held at Birch Cove Baptist Church, 50 Donaldson Ave., Saturday January 23rd at 1 PM with a brief social following. MENZIES, James Gilchrist - On July 30th, 2011, Jim passed away peacefully at the age of 96 years in the presence of family. He is survived by his sons Ian (Penny) of Inglis, Bill (Eleanor) of Winnipeg, Gordon (Lisa) of Winnipeg, and Peter of Dawson City, Yukon; his grandchildren Karl (Sheola) of Porcupine Plain, Saskatchewan, and Allyson and Kara of Halifax, Nova Scotia; his brother Tom of Winnipeg; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Verna, in September 2008. Dad was born in Winnipeg in 1915, the eldest son of William and Margaret Menzies, who had immigrated to Canada from Scotland several years earlier. After graduating from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate, he enrolled in Pharmacy at the University of Manitoba, graduating in 1939. At the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy, serving in British Columbia, Nova Scotia, and the Gulf of St. Lawrence commanding a Fairmile vessel escorting convoys and patrolling for enemy submarines. Following the end of the war, Dad and Mom were married in 1946 and then settled in Crystal City where he, with much support and assistance from Mom, started the Crystal City Pharmacy. A proud moment for him was the opening of a new pharmacy building in 1965 in which he practiced his profession until his retirement in 1988 at the age of 73 years young. Jim was very active in the community throughout his life. He was a founding member of the Crystal City Lions Club, served on the school board and on the hospital board, was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and the Masons, and was a dedicated supporter of community initiatives and events. Dad had a wonderful singing voice, would often break out in song, and was a member of the United Church choir for many years. He had a green thumb, especially when it came to his tomatoes and flowers. He and Mom enjoyed countless friendships, (frequently involving games of bridge and get togethers at the cottage), many enduring throughout their lives. He cherished the family time he spent each summer at the cottage at Rock Lake, especially when the family was young, tooling around in the Capsule, watching his sons learn how to swim, paddle a canoe, and appreciate the outdoors. Dad was a wonderful father, proud and supportive, always providing a positive outlook. He was a loving partner to Mom (especially during her last years when she was in ill health), and a much respected member of the community. He had a disarming sense of humour that made anyone he met immediately feel at ease. He enjoyed an active and healthy life, living independently until he passed away. We loved him because he was kind and giving. We admired him because he was never envious or unforgiving, and we will remember him for always seeing the positive side of life. A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 6, 2011 in the Crystal City United Church. MERKL, Frank N. - husband of Mrs. Doreen Merkl of Lethbridge, AB passed away at the Lethbridge Regional Hospital on Thursday, December 9, 1996 at the age of 65 years. Besides his loving wife of 43 years, Doreen, Frank is survived by his children, as well as grandchildren. Predeceased by his father Anthony, Mother Katherine and sister Mary. Frank served in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1952 to 1963, and was a proud member of the Korean War Vets and the Royal Canadian Legion. October 4, 1961 he broke his neck in a diving accident. Frank was very active in the community, serving three terms as Alderman of the City of Lethbridge, served on the Lethbridge Exhibition Board, and was a shareholder of the Lethbridge Hurricanes. He also served as Commissioner of the Lethbridge Minor Football League as well as served on the Board of the Lethbridge Health Unit, and received his Arts Degree from the U of L. Frank was a Co-Founder of the Lethbridge Handi-Bus, he had a strong voice for the disabled. He was the Canadian Vice President of (COHPO) Canadian Organization for Handicap People's Organization. Funeral Mass held at Our lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, 2405 12th Avenue South, Lethbridge, AB on Saturday, December 7, 1996. Celebrant. Interment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery.

MILLEY, Allister J. - On August 31, 2009 Allister passed away peacefully and suddenly at the Chateau Gardens Nursing Home, Niagara-On-The-Lake at the age of 100 years. Beloved husband of the late Lillian Milley (1987) and loving father of Dale Stuteley and her husband John and the late Myra Lewis (1989). Allister will be fondly remembered by his son-in-law Ron Lewis. Al will be sadly missed by his grandchildren Allison Sinclair and Christopher Stuteley (Jaclyn) and by his great-grandson Logan Stuteley. Allister was predeceased by twelve siblings and by five brothers and sisters- in-law. Allister was a favourite uncle to many nieces and nephews. Allister led a long and fulfilling life beginning with his employment with Canada Steamship, proudly serving with the Royal Canadian Navy in Halifax during World War II. In later years he was employed with the Toronto Transit Commission as a carpenter and he finished his career with The Corps of Commissionaires at Osgoode Hall. Allister's family would like to thank Dr. D. Reimer and the Staff at Niagara-on-the-Lake Hospital for their care of Al. Even though Dad was only at Chateau Gardens for a short period of time, their loving care and attentiveness made his final weeks a warm and positive experience because of the dedication of the Staff of Chateau Gardens. Allister's family will receive friends on Wednesday September 2nd from 10 o'clock until service time at 11 o'clock at Morgan Funeral Home, 415 Regent Street, Niagara-on-the-Lake. A light reception will be held at the funeral home following the service. Interment will take place at York Cemetery in Toronto on Wednesday at 3 o'clock. MONTGOMERY, Herbert Charles (13 Nov 1924 - 09 Jan 2016) - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Herb on January 9, 2016. He was predeceased by his wife Marjorie, who passed away on July 8, 2015. Herb grew up in Outremont, Quebec. In 1936, the Montgomery family discovered Lake Louisa, Quebec, which became his favourite place on earth. Herb enlisted in the RCNVR and served as a Lieutenant on the HMCS Magog in WWII. After the war, he attended McGill University and attained a BSc. in Chemistry. He married his Lake Louisa sweetheart Marjorie in 1948 and they were married for 67 years. Herb had a long and successful career with Canada Colours and Chemicals Limited. In his retirement, he initiated the development of the Canadian Association of Chemical Distributors. He was always actively involved in his community. Herb was the president of a local chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society, served as the President of the York Central Hospital Foundation, was the People's Warden for St. Mary's and St. Aidan's Anglican churches. At Lake Louisa he served as the President of the Lake Louisa Country Club and was also one of the founding members of the Lake Louisa Property Owners Association. He was active on the Board of the Dunany Golf Club. Herb loved golfing, "puttering", and taking pictures of Lake Louisa sunsets. He authored two books on the history of the Lake Louisa area. He touched many people with his kindness and compassion. Herb was loved, admired and respected by everyone who knew him, especially his family. He was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle. Herb will be greatly missed by his children Richard (Sandy), Leslie Comfort (Todd), Marianne Ford (Bruce); his grandchildren; Michelle (Jason), Alyssa, Katherine, Davis and Madeline and his great-grandchildren Kurtis and Kaitlyn. He cherished his family and was proud of each and every one of them. MacKENZIE, Cordlandt John Gordon, LCdr, RCN(R) (06 Sep 1920 - 16 May 2013) - Born and raised in Toronto. Only child of Henry J. G. Mackenzie and Marjorie née Campbell. Graduated Upper Canada College. Naval officer in the Battle of the Atlantic; corvette captain by war's end. Married Jean, daughter of Lt.-Col. William Barker VC, on January 6, 1945. M.D. in 1951 from Queen's University Kingston. That year moved to B.C. and became a GP in private practice. In 1954 began a career with the Ministry of Health: first as Director of the Peace River Health Unit, later of the West Kootenay, Selkirk, and Central Vancouver Island units. Joined UBC faculty in 1963. Acting Chairman of the Department of Health Care and Epidemiology in 1969, Head of the Department from 1973 to 1980. The CJG Mackenzie Prize for Excellence in Teaching was named in his honour by his former department (now called SPPH). President and a leading light of the Family Planning Association of B.C., and Director and Vice-President of the Family Planning Federation of Canada from 1970-1974. Played an active role in environmental health issues in B.C. and elsewhere. A member of the Pollution Control Board of B.C. from 1967 and its chairman from 1977 to 1982. Chairman of the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Use of Pesticides and Herbicides, 1972 - 1975. Headed the Task Force on Arsenic in Yellowknife 1977-1979. In 1986 received the Canadian Public Health Association's highest honour, the R.D. Defries Award. Extensive consultation and teaching overseas, including Pakistan, India, Malaysia, Australia and the Cook Islands. Professor at the University of Papua New Guinea for two academic years. His avocations were many, including organizing Unitarian Fellowships, hobby farming with horses, cider making, and wooden boat building. He devoted his retirement to nature conservation and animal welfare causes. He and Jean became vegans for ethical and health reasons. He retired from playing polo only to take up scuba, and continued diving until well into old age. This experience and his nautical background helped make him a passionate defender of the marine environment, and he was a founder and chairman of The Canadian Marine Environment Protection Society (CMEPS). He remained sharp and engaged until the very end. He is survived, and sorely missed, by his son David and his children, Mary, Henry, and Rob; by his son Ian and his partner Andrew; by his son Alec and his wife Marlene. Memorial at end of June. McCUE, George A, CPO, RCN - Halifax, died October 20, 1993, in Veterans Memorial Hospital, Halifax. Born in Scotland, he was a son of the late John and Annie McCue. He served 25 years as a member of the Canadian Armed Forces, serving on a number of ships, including HMCS Haida, HMCS Nootka, HMCS Magnificent and HMCS Bonaventure. He was mess president at HMCS Cornwallis and also a member of the Warrant Officer and Sergeant Mess, Windsor Park. He was a member of the Atlantic Chief Petty Officers Association and Royal Canadian Legion, White Ensign. Following his discharge from the forces, he was employed with the Department of Fisheries in the protection branch. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and the outdoors. He is survived by his wife, the former Madeline Morrison; brother, Thomas, Didsbury, Alta.; sister, Margaret (Mrs. Harry Jensen), Prince George, B.C.; a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Jack. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be at sea. McLEESE, Willis Stewart - Passed away on Wednesday, January 5, 2011 in his 98th year. Devoted husband of Adelaide, great supporter and mentor of Rob (Rosemary), very proud grandfather of Paul, Geoffrey and Stephen. He was the only child of Alexander Stewart McLeese and Jesse Pearl (nee Weaver) McLeese. Willis was married to Dr. Adelaide Fleming, formerly of Halifax, for 61 years. They met in Toronto, after he served in the Navy as an Engineering Officer in the North Atlantic. Following the war, Willis developed an industrial refrigeration business for John Inglis Co. with shops and offices across Canada. In 1957 he became President of Trans Canada Freezers which grew and by 1979 acquired United States Cold Storage with 57 plants in Canada and the U.S. He served 26 years as a Director and Officer of International Utilities and Chaired the Board's Audit Committee. When Willis reached the age of 90, another public company Board changed their bylaws to increase the mandatory retirement age to 117 to facilitate Willis' continuing involvement. In 1982, he initiated the development of a biomass fuelled electric generating station in California which provides power to about 50,000 homes. That business has grown to include locations in Pennsylvania, Utah and Montana. The consummate entrepreneur, at 85 with his son by his side, Willis dreamed up the vision of Cobble Beach, an extraordinary world class golf resort community on the shores of Georgian Bay, just north of Owen Sound. He was a major supporter of Georgian Riding Association for Challenged Equestrians (GRACE) in Owen Sound. He had a strong passion for student debating. Over the last 35 years, he was instrumental in the development of the Canadian Student Debating Federation. Special thanks to Dr. McCall and the Meaford General Hospital staff for their compassionate care. OLIVER, Frank Dundonald (28 Jun 1920 - 05 Jan 2016) - It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Frank Oliver on January 5th, 2016 in Victoria, BC. Frank is survived by his loving wife of 70 years Helmie; son Gerry (Marilyn) and daughter Susan (James) Neveaux; and grandsons Nicholas and Brendan Neveaux. He was predeceased by his brothers Bain, Telford and sister Esther. Frank was born in Regina, SK and was raised in Nelson, B.C. After serving in the Navy during World War II he returned to Victoria where he worked with the Department of National Defense at HMCS Dockyard in Esquimalt. Frank enjoyed many of his free hours at Shawnigan Lake engaged in a variety of activities with family and friends. One of Frank's favorite past times was a visit to the Colwood Casino which he affectionately referred to as the "Office". The family would to thank the kind and loving staff at Victoria Hospice who cared for Dad in his last days. OUELLET, Rene Joseph, Lt (N) (28 Jan 1940 - 28 Nov 2009) - After a courageous battle of advanced pleural mesothelioma, a rare cancer of the lung lining, Rene passed away on Nov. 28, 2009 at the age of 69. He was born in Beaumont, Quebec. After the death of his mother at age 8, he entered an orphanage operated by the Catholic Church and the Province of Quebec. He was haunted for life by the horrific treatment from the Orders administering these facilities. Rene started his naval career, enrolling as an electrical technician, at D'Iberville Quebec, in 1959. His life was the Navy, spanning 35 years of service. He came up through the ranks, from Ordinary Seaman, to the eventual achievement of Commissioned Officer. He served onboard the Sioux, Qu'Appelle, Assiniboine, Bonaventure, Nipigon, Huron, Saguenay, Skeena, and Protecteur. His shore postings were to Cornwallis, Stadacona ,Shelburne, MARCOM HQ, FMG HALIFAX, Canadian Forces Fleet School, and National Defense Headquarters. Rene was a life member of the Naval Electrical Society (now disbanded), CFB Chilliwack CD2 Association, Atlantic Chief and PO's Association, and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 280 Vedder. Upon retirement to the West Coast, Rene acquired his constant canine companion Duke. They enjoyed many wonderful trips down the Oregon Coast and were especially keen on the California Redwood Forest. Rene and Duke spent 14 very happy years together. For many years, Rene worked as a volunteer with the Pacific Riding for Developing Abilities. He enjoyed working with the animals and helping the children. Hockey was Rene's passion. He supported the Chilliwack Chiefs and Bruins teams, seldomly missing a game. His hockey friends now miss his enthusiasm at the games. Rene was self educated and very knowledgeable in a wide range of subjects. His hobbies included reading, crossword puzzles, golf, gardening, woodworking, wine making and traveling. While living on the West Coast, he enjoyed trips to Australia, New Zealand, United States, the Maritimes, and Ontario. He is survived by his wife Jan; brothers Gaetan (Brenda) Ouellet, Miramichi NB; Paul-Andre (Denise) Ouellet, Ste Julie PQ; Donald Ouellet, Quebec; Jean-Pierre (Gracia) Ouellet, St Lucien PQ; Brother-in-law Bruce Krisher, Creston BC; five God-Children: Patrick Heney, US Army Killeen, Texas; Shauna Rae Harrison-Saroufim, Orleans ON; Illona Karlsen, Portsmouth, England; Chantal Krisher, Creston, BC and Tristan Harrison, Kanata, Ontario. Born in Parrsboro he was a son of the late Darrell and Shirley (Crossman) Pettis. Rod served with the Royal Canadian Navy for 25 years. He is survived by his wife, the former Marilyn Guthreau; sons, Barry (Mary-Ann), Truro; Todd, Surrey B.C.; Darin (April), Springhill; sisters, Frances (Reid), Parrsboro; Mary (Ron), Serento, B.C.; a brother, Gary (Kathy), Debert; 7 Grandchildren. PILKINGTON, Ronald William - 71, Dartmouth, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2015 at the Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Penticton, BC, he grew up in Williams Lake and joined the Navy at the young age of 17. Except for a short period back in Williams Lake to try civilian life, he served the Royal Canadian Navy first as a sonar-man on various ships including the HMCS Restigouche, and then continued to work as a civilian for DND as a storesman at Stadacona until his Retirement in 1998. Ron was passionate about cooking, as those who have feasted on his prime rib and Yorkshire pudding can attest. He started each day with coffee and a crossword and enjoyed a lively night of dancing, shuffleboard with friends, a good glass of red wine, "wing night", old western movies, a 'wet' with the boys at Doolittles, and doing exquisite petit point (a hobby he mastered while 'on the ships'). Family was always most important as he made many trips 'home' to B.C where he relished time spent and his reputation as 'good, bad and everything in between Uncle Ron' to his loving nieces and nephews. He was not only large in stature but in personality and will be remembered for his sharp wit, Ron was an obstinate, opinionated, loving and honourable husband, brother, Uncle and friend, and to the end could say "I DID IT MY WAY". Now he soars with the eagles. He is deeply missed by his cherished and devoted wife of 19.5 years, Bonnie (MacDonald) Dartmouth, sisters Wilma (Cal Hornby) Penticton B.C., Audrey Hyde (Ray Anderson) and Geraldine West, both of Williams Lake B.C., the MacDonald family. 14 nieces and nephews, numerous grand nieces, nephews and great-grand nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth Tuck (Advocaat) and Harold Pilkington, and step-father George Tuck. The family thanks the outstanding staff at the Dartmouth General & Halifax Infirmary ICU's for their exceptional, professional care given to Ron during his brief illness. Don is also survived by brother-in-law Stan Butterworth, sister-in-law Doreen Mikulik, as well as many nieces and nephews near and far. Don was born in Winnipeg, MB and resided there for all his life. He was a proud Second World War Navy veteran and a member of the White Ensign Club. Don was employed for over 40 years with the City of Winnipeg. Ruth and Don enjoyed many active years of retirement together and had a grand time travelling all over North America and Europe. Don was an active member of John Black Memorial United Church for 54 years. He gifted all his family with a love of gardening, exploring outdoors, playing sports, birding, music, singing and especially cherishing time spent with family near and far. SCHOFIELD, Lorne Atwood - age 80, of Falmouth, Hants County, passed away on Saturday, September 25, 2010, in the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, after a brief illness. Born on November 25,1929, in Gaspereau, Kings County, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late Freda (Schofield) Atwell and Clyde Atwell. He is survived by his wife, the former Mildred Woodman; daughter, Krista (Tony) Ross, Falmouth; son, Terry (Debbie), Falmouth; grandsons, Evan Schofield, Brandyn Ross, Cameron Ross and Logan Ross; brothers, Carl (Mae) Atwell, Martock; Bruce (Shari) Atwell, Falmouth; sister, Mae Atwell, Ottawa; and a number of nieces and nephews. Married to Mildred for 58 years, Lorne was a loving husband, caring father and devoted grandfather. He served his country for 31 years in the Canadian Navy. After his retirement in 1984, Lorne spent his days selflessly helping friends and family, whether it was building a deck or fixing a faucet, Lorne was there. He bought his first computer at age 72, taught himself how to use it and use it he did, for everything from banking to following school schedules. His family meant everything to him and he got great enjoyment following his grandsons in whatever they were doing. Lorne spent many days in rinks all over the Maritimes, quietly encouraging his grandsons. He was a strong, quiet man, who battled a deadly disease as long as possible. He will be missed dearly by, all who knew him. Cremation has taken place under the care of Lindsay's Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, Windsor. At Lorne's request, there was no visitation. A graveside service was 11 am, Thursday, September 30, 2010, in the Centre Falmouth Cemetery, Town Road, Falmouth, Hants County, with the Rev. Bill Gibson officiated. SCHWARTZ, Conrad (14 Feb 1920 - 08 Feb 2016) - In sorrow, yet celebrating a long life well lived, our family announces the passing of our beloved father, grandfather (Papa), great-grandfather, uncle, and friend on February 8, 2016 at the grand age of 95 years (six days shy of 96). Conrad leaves to mourn his passing his son Daniel; daughter Laura (Jeff); granddaughter Tara (Rob), great-grandson Ari; granddaughter Jaime (Jazer); and numerous other relatives. Conrad was predeceased by his beloved wife Ellen, his parents, all his siblings and their spouses. He was born on the family farm in Saskatchewan in 1920. The family returned to Winnipeg where he grew up. At an early age he left school to help support the family. As a young man, during the Second World War, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy, serving on the HMCS New Glasgow and HMCS Chambly. Upon return he worked with his father and brothers forming K. Schwartz and Sons Construction Company. Upon retirement Conrad and Ellen spent many happy winters in Phoenix, Arizona. SELK, Norman, AB, RCNVR - Born in Lethbridge, Alberta, the son of Christian Selk and Elnora Christensen Selk, he enlisted in the RCNVR at Calgary on 31 Dec 1942. He served on the high seas and was honourably discharged on 05 Nov 1945 as an Able Seaman. He received the 1939-45 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star with Atlantic clasp, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with clasp and War Medal 1949-45. Norman died on 04 Jul 1970 at the age of 46 and is buried in the Sterling Cemetery, Lethbridge, Alberta.

SEVERIN, George Joseph (Wayne) - Loving Husband, Father, Grand-Father and Great Grand-Father passed peacefully on Wednesday, January 21st, 2015 in Saint John, NB at the age of 72. Wayne was born in Pembroke, Ontario on February 26th, 1941 to Manzil and Cora Severin. As the eldest of 9 siblings, Wayne grew up quickly and at the tender age of 17 decided it was time to spread his wings and forge a new life for himself beyond Pembroke's city limits. He found his calling in the Canadian Navy where, over the course of his 25 year career, he worked his way up to Petty Officer 2nd Class as both a Radar Technician and Diver while being stationed in Halifax, NS and abroad in England. Wayne found the love of his life in Elizabeth Ann Severin (nee Alexander) and tied the knot with her in Halifax, NS on Nov. 16, 1974. Over the years Wayne and Elizabeth lovingly raised their 2 children, Tamara Leigh and Mark William. Since that time, and over the past 30 years, Wayne's clan has grown by leaps and bounds to include 7 grandchildren; Daniel, Cory, Johnathan, Kyle, Kara, Megan and Eisha and, most recently his first great grandchild, 6 week old Brooke. In 1983 Wayne was forced to retire from the Canadian Armed Forces due to injury. However, never one to let setbacks sway him from supporting his family and pursuing life with vigor and determination, Wayne moved to Saint John NB in 1984 to take position with Saint John Shipbuilding. Due to growing health problems Wayne was forced into retirement in 1988. In retirement Wayne's passions included spending time with Elizabeth, his children and grandchildren as well as boating excursions up the Kennebecasis River, gardening, painting, feeding his backyard wildlife, and playing darts at the Rothesay Baptist Church. He also took great enjoyment from weekly visits by his best friend, and WWII veteran, George Cooper. Together they would while away many an hour tinkering with computers, making video and audio recordings for his grandchildren and exploring a wide variety of common interests. Wayne will be remembered for his wit, "can do" attitude and boundless sense of humor. His love of life and family will endure through the memories he created and the bonds he forged throughout his life. SHADDOCK, Gary Donald - Halifax, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 20, 2010. Gary was born in St. Catharine's, Ont., on April 30, 1943, to the late Lewis and Marjorie Shaddock. At the age of 17, he joined the Canadian Armed Forces and made Halifax his home. Gary was with the forces for 25 years. His second career was with Lockheed Martin for 20 years. Gary had a calm and easygoing nature with a great sense of humour. He was also independent and strong, which helped us all deal with his illness. Family was very important to him and he was very proud of his family and being a papa. He will be dearly missed by his wife, Virginia; sons, Wayne (Sherry) and Christopher (Melina); daughter, Linda (Edmund); half-sister, Patricia Reddette; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Samantha, Kristina, Matthew, Jenna, Chase and Olivia; great-granddaughter, Makayla Rose. SMITH, Alexander McDonald (26 Oct 1924 - 18 Dec 2015) - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alexander McDonald Smith, after a brief illness, at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Alex served with the Royal Canadian Navy during WWII and survived the sinking of the HMCS Alberni on August 21, 1944. Following the war, he went on to join the Toronto Fire Department and attained the rank of Captain, before retiring in 1986. Alex was a first generation Canadian - the third child of Alexander McDonald (Sandy) and Christina Shaw (nee Gellatly) Smith of Lochee, Scotland. He was predeceased by his best friend and wife of 54 years, Phyllis Viola (nee Yanch), siblings James, Jessie and Hector and daughter Robin Lynne. Alex is survived by his children Wayne (Laura), Maureen, Elaine and Robert (Lisa) and cousin Edna Willis. He took great pride in the accomplishments of his grandchildren Shannon, Evan (Naomi), Meghan, Kyle, Nicole, Brian, Cassidy and Deirdre. He was a supportive great-grandfather to Darren, Savannah and Dreyden. Alex joined the Church of St. Jude (Wexford) when he and his young family moved to Scarborough in 1952. He was active on several church and cemetery boards, could provide information on the history of the members and considered the people in the church as family. Although he and Phyllis travelled extensively - visiting 38 countries together - on most recent days he could be found on his front verandah, watching people go by. The dogs in the neighbourhood knew to head up the sidewalk for a friendly pat. He enjoyed discussing or debating current events with a robust passion. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. STEWART, Harold Douglas – 82, of Dartmouth passed away January 1, 2015 at the Q E II Infirmary Site. Born in Yarmouth, he was the son of the late Harold and Dorothy (Roy) Stewart. Douglas was in the Royal Canadian Navy for 38 years as an Electronic warfare officer. He travelled all over the world during his work career. He led a very active life even after his retirement, enjoying badminton and socializing at the YMCA up until two years ago. He and Joyce enjoyed travelling in the retirement years. Douglas enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and enjoyed being a handyman at his cottage. To all who knew Douglas he was a kind, patient and a genuine person. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Joyce; sons Michael (Nancy) of Bridgewater, Barry (Paulette) of Dartmouth; brothers Rev. VANDER-HOEK, Harry, CPO - July 26, 1927 ~ May 3, 2015 Harry was born on a farm in Abbotsford. He met and married Audrey Evans of the Mt. Lehman area in 1952 and served in the RCN for 25 years as a Chief Petty Officer. In 1973 Harry and Audrey moved back to Abbotsford where he worked at Empress Foods, Brookside Egg Plant, at Sevenoaks Mall as Operations Manager and the Matsqui Institute. Harry retired in 1988 and enjoyed woodwork, gardening, camping, fishing and wintering in Arizona. He is survived by his loving wife Audrey (of almost 63 years); three children June (Bob) Alspaugh, Stu (Sheila) and Wayne (Colleen); 7 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; brothers Ted, George and Dick, sisters Jen, Nellie, Leona and Cora and other family members and friends. Harry was predeceased by his parents Angela (Bos) and John; sisters Toots and Martha (Jackie) and eldest brother Peter. There will be no service at the family's request. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the BC Cancer Society or the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

WRIGHT, William George (Bill) - passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on July 12th, 2015. He is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Joyce, his children, Vikki (Rob), Judi (Roger), Wendy Kate (Brian), Bill (Colleen), his 9 grandchildren, his 15 great-grandchildren, and his younger sister, Pat (Don) Zanelli. Bill was a passionate family man who dedicated his life to helping and inspiring others. He was recently presented with a 50 year pin for his charitable work with the Lions International. Bill was one of the founders of the Baron of beef (Oak Bay Tea party.) For many years, he taught the educational Quest Program to local Elementary teachers, and taught electrical courses (night school) at Camosun College for ten years. He was a longtime member of the Illumination Engineering Society and a lifetime member of the Independent Order of Foresters. He began his work career with his dad and 5 brothers, as a butcher in Wright's Meat Market on Oak Bay Avenue. He was a navy veteran of WWII and retired as an electrician for the Municipality of Oak Bay. He was a great storyteller and his infectious smile and sparkling blue eyes always lifted people's spirits. Dad/Papa was famous for his hugs and will be missed by the many lives he touched. The family is very grateful for the love and caring shown by the staff at Broadmead, and in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the Lodge at Broadmead at 4579 Chatterton Way, V8X 4Y7. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, July 24th at 2 pm at First Memorial on 4725 Falaise Drive. (The Victoria Times Colonist 19 Jul 2015)
