ANDERSON, B. Wayne - age 70, of Yarmouth, passed away on October 14, 2015 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Halifax on July 11, 1945, he was the eldest son of the late F. Bernard and Kathleen (Doyle) Anderson. While growing up in Havre Boucher, Wayne was very active in his community. He was President of the Kinsman, Deputy Governor of the Kinsman and a member of the local Fire Department. Wayne joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1965. Upon leaving the Navy in 1970 he started his career as an Electrician, which brought him to work in various mines throughout Canada. In 1996 Wayne resided in Lynn Lake, Manitoba and was President of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 236, Town Councilor and a member of the Lions Club. Upon leaving Lynn Lake his journey brought him to Churchill, Manitoba where he was President and Vice President of Local 50503. During this time, Wayne made Yarmouth his home and was an active member of IBEW Local 625. He is survived by his loving wife, Ruth (Carter), Yarmouth; children, Chad (Joanne), Heatherton; Adele (Colin) Johnson, Abbotsford B.C.; stepdaughter, Lynne Ryerson, Yarmouth; grandchildren, Scotia, Rylan, Gracie and Ainsley; step-grandchildren, Oakley and Olivia Ryerson; brother, Tommy, Havre Boucher; sister, Marilyn (John) Webb, Havre Boucher. As well as nieces and nephew. Wayne was predeceased by his brothers, David and Ricky. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of H.M. Huskilsons Funeral home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth with visitation from 7-9 pm Sunday, October 18 in the funeral home, Yarmouth. A funeral mass will be held at 11 am Monday at Saint Ambrose Cathedral, Yarmouth with Father Henry Smolenaars officiating. An interment will be held at a later date. ARAB, Joseph Thomas - age 93, of Halifax, passed away April 20, 2015 at home. Joseph was born in Halifax, August 28, 1921, son of the late James and Rachede Arab. He was a naval veteran of the Second World War, and worked as an Industrial Radiographer for Defense Research Establishment Atlantic for 31 years, retiring in 1984. He was married to the 'love of his life' Neva (Harley) for almost 62 years. After retiring he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, Sandra and Cindy and traveling around Canada and the United States. Joseph was always active in the church and in volunteer activities. He is survived by his wife, Neva; daughters, Coleen (Dave Campbell) and Paula (Peter Fougere); granddaughters: Sandra (Mike) and great-granddaughter Isobella; Cindy (Aris) and great-granddaughter Scarlett; sisters, Catherine and Jennie; and a number of nieces and nephews and wonderful friends whose lives he has touched over the years. He was predeceased by brothers, Frankie and Leo Arab and infant brother Charlie; sisters, Sadie Cooke and Margaret Casey. A memorial mass service will be held in Saint Theresa’s Church on North Street in Halifax, on Thursday, April 23, at 11 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

ARSENAULT, Howard J. - 89, Berwick, Kings Co., passed away on Sunday, March 8, 2015 at Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Veteran’s Wing, Middleton surrounded by his loving family. Born in Borden, PEI on December 26, 1925 he was the son of the late Arthur and Margaret (Cormier) Arsenault. Howard was manager of the Berwick Bakery for many years retiring in December 1990. He was a Member of the Berwick Lions Club, Royal Canadian Legion Branch #69, Berwick Town Council and Police Commission. Howard served with the Navy in the Second World War. Surviving are sons Steven (Donna) Fredericton, NB; Rick (Mona), Kingston, NS; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Howard was predeceased by his wife Audrey (2010), son Wayne, sisters Lue Alanac and Hilda Seymour. Visitation for Howard will be at the Berwick Funeral Chapel on Thursday, March 12 from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. where the Funeral Service will held on Friday, March 13 at 1:00 p.m., reception to follow at the Lions Centre located at the Apple Dome. BANMAN, Lawrence (Larry) - After a long and courageous journey with ALS, our dear husband and father Larry Banman, 73, passed away peacefully at home in Sherbrooke on June 2, 2015 – just as Compass was wrapping up. Although we already miss him, with his dry sense of humour and see-it-through determined nature, it was God's great gift to take him home. Larry was born on October 20, 1941 in rural Saskatchewan to the late Peter and Mary (Fehr) Banman, the eldest son of 11 children in a close-knit and loving prairie farm family. A 21-year veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces – a career that took him and his young family to PEI in 1974 – he would go on to raise foxes, work as an AI technician and indulge his life-long love of horses with the founding of Venture Stables in Freetown. Larry leaves to mourn Margaret, his wife of 49 years, and his two sons Peter (Leonie) and Alan (Mary), of whom he was so proud. He was also proud papa to Emma, Lucas, Nathan and Sophia, who remember him in their own special ways. He is survived by his siblings Julia (Les) Wall, Gladys (Andy) Banilevic, Carol (Merv) Ireland, Bob (Chris) Banman, Betsy (Grant) Preston, Wendy (Harvey) Hildahl, Brian (Sharon) Banman, Cheryl (Ken) Zurowski, Russell Banman and Bev (Barry) Rowley. Cremation is taking place and arrangements have been entrusted to the Davison Funeral Home in Kensington where friends and family are invited to a celebration of Larry's life to be held Friday, June 5 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. BISHOP, Allen (Al) - age 90, of Halifax, passed away suddenly on November 17, 2015. Born in Dorchester, N.B., only son of the late Allen and Winnifred Bishop. Al served in the Canadian Navy during the Second World War. He was a successful salesman during his working career. He was a long-time member of Parkhill United Church and served on many committees and boards. He held the position of treasurer for many years. Al loved to travel and take roads off the beaten path and thoroughly enjoyed his RV and camping travels with his wife, family and friends. Al was well-liked and admired by all who knew him and enjoyed a good laugh and harmless pranks. A true family man, providing love, encouragement, and advice to his children. He loved family gatherings at his home, the latest one was 18 family members on his 90th birthday, Sunday, November 15. Survived by his daughter, Ellen (Pat) Brown; sons, Bob,-Donnie (Patricia), Gary, and John Bishop; cherished grandchildren, Jason Brown, Jennifer Pink, Janelle and Jared Bishop, Chad and Channing Bishop, Lezah Kelly; and five greatgrandchildren. Predeceased by the love of his life, Eunice Bishop and infant son, Gordon. Visitation will be held in J.A. BLACK, James Oliver - It is with heavy hearts that we regret to announce the sudden passing of James Oliver Black, age 87, on Thursday October 1st, 2015 in Dartmouth General Hospital surrounded by family and loved ones. Born in Wood Mountain, Sask., he was a son of Emma and Oscar Black. Brother to Marion Turnbull, Lelland Black, Kathleen Bryshun, and predeceased by brother, David. He was also an uncle to many nieces and nephews. Jim grew up and went to school in Prince Albert, Sask. During his time riding the rails as a youth, Jim did everything from picking tomatoes in Ontario, to lumber jacking in British Columbia. Jim then joined the Royal Canadian Navy which included an 18-month stint in Korea in the early 1950s. After returning from Korea, he married Marie A. Pothier and had a family of five children: daughter, Cynthia (the late Marlin Hirschfeld), son, Timothy (Nadine Deering), daughter, Tanya (Paul Risk), daughter, Nadine (Reinhard Pienitz) and predeceased by beloved daughter, Patricia Marion Black. Also special nephew, Keray (Antonella Taylor). Jim was the proud grandfather to Matthew and Sacha Hirschfeld, Jasmin, Jacob and Chloe Risk and Max and Marcus Pienitz. Jim also left behind his special friend Betty MacKinlay whom he often referred to as his best friend along with all her family and friends. He was a beloved father and friend. He was a kind-hearted loving man always ready to lend a hand to anyone in need. He enjoyed cooking, reading, carving, tinkering with anything broken, writing poetry, being in nature, the companionship of dogs and he was known to enjoy a glass of wine. His passion was music, professionally playing the trumpet in numerous bands, including over 30 years with the Dartmouth Concert Band. We wish to thank Verna and George Taylor and Barb Nielsen for their kindness, friendship and support. Also a special thank you to the doctors and nurses of the Dartmouth General Emergency and Fourth Floor West for all their compassion and care during a difficult time. BLAIR, Henry - 93, of Dartmouth passed on June 29, 2015 at the Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Bedlington, Northumberland, England on November 2, 1921, he was the son of the late Henry and Alice (Bell) Blair. During WWII, Henry served as a Sub-Lieutenant with the Royal Naval Reserves and in the North Atlantic, the Pacific and Far East theaters. Henry, his wife Kathleen and son Stuart, immigrated to Canada in 1947. Shortly after arrival in Canada, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served in the Korean conflict and in a number of peacetime roles. After a medical discharge he was employed as the Chief Engineer at the Nova Scotian Hotel. After a number of years in that position, he joined Durham Leaseholds and was involved in the construction of the Royal Bank building, the CIBC building and Barrington Place. Upon completion of these buildings he became the Chief Engineer for these buildings and later became the Property Manager for the Royal Bank building. Following retirement, he volunteered with the Canadian Red Cross, was a member and past President of the Woodlawn Kiwanis. Henry enjoyed dancing, golf, bowling and travel. Henry was predeceased by his wife Kathleen (O'Donnell) and infant brother, John. He is survived by his sons, Stuart (Carol), Grand Pre, N.S., Jeffrey (Pamela), Port Hardy, B.C. Grandchildren Craig (Janna), Christopher (Nicola), Jan Loner (Darren), Ryan and nine great grandchildren. BOYCE, Ronald Gordon, Captain (29 Jul 1914 - 15 Feb 1978) - 63, of 21 Moira Street, Dartmouth, died Wednesday in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Jersey Harbour, Nfld., he was a son of the late Alexander and Elizabeth (White) Boyce. He was a naval pilot at HMC Dockyard until his retirement last year. He was a member of the White Ensign Masonic Lodge, Halifax. Surviving are his wife, the former Marjorie Rowe; three sons, Gordon, Richard, Dartmouth; Austin, Halifax; and one sister, Jean (Mrs. Robert Anthony), St. John's Nfld. The body is at Matatall's Funeral Home, Dartmouth. Funeral service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in Stair's Memorial Church, rev. Vincent Ihasz officiating. BUDGELL, Halden Earle - With sadness, we announce the passing of Halden Earle Budgell, age 82, in the Palliative Care Unit, the VG Site, QEII, Halifax, on Sat­urday, March 14, 2015. Born in Rigolet, Labrador, he was the youngest son of the late George and Phyllis Budgell (Northwest River, Labrador). Hal joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1951 and served on multiple ships for 37 years. He was a 35-year member of the Royal Canadian Legion. He loved hunting, fishing, gardening and feeding the birds at the cottage. He also enjoyed reading and doing crossword puzzles. Hal is survived by Elaine (Countway), together for 34 years; daughters, Helen (Panayotis Zervas), Toronto; Phyllis (Phil LeBlanc), Yarmouth; grandchildren, Alexandra, Carolina, Nicolas Zervas and Erin LeBlanc; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters and six brothers. Cremation has taken place. In keeping with Hal’s wishes, there will be no service. Interment will be at a later date. CANN, Charles Arthur - Charles Arthur Cann passed away unexpectedly on November 3, 2015 at 87 years of age. Charlie was born April 16, 1928 in Sydney, Nova Scotia. A proud member of the Royal Canadian Navy, Charlie retired in 1976 after 30 years of service to his country with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer. He returned to school at NSIT and received his diploma in Social Work, and then worked for the county of Halifax, Department of Social Services until he retired at age 65. Charlie is survived by his devoted wife Joan, six children, 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. His strong faith in God had a significant influence on how he lived his life and raised his family. Charlie was a kind, selfless, caring, spirited and compassionate man who taught us much about hard work, family, love and responsibility. We will continue to grow on what Charlie has instilled in all of us. Although our hearts weep at the thought of never seeing your gentle soul again Charlie, you will live on in our memories and in our laughter. We have the best Angel possible watching over all of us! CARNAHAN, George Burton - The passing of George Burton Carnahan of Fredericton, NB, beloved husband of Pauline (Sheppard) Carnahan occurred on Sunday, February 21, 2016 at the Dr Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. George was born on the 23rd of March 1939 in Gray Rapids, NB, to James and Sarah (Warren) Carnahan. George lived most of his childhood in the Miramichi and Fredericton areas before joining the Royal Canadian Navy in 1956. During his career, he travelled extensively with the Navy, including multiple visits to Newfoundland where he met and married Pauline in 1961, several trips to the Canadian Arctic, the Caribbean, the United States and Europe. Following an illustrious career as a Naval Clearance Diver on HMCS Granby that culminated with his appointment as Chief of the Fleet Diving Unit (Atlantic), George accepted a commission as a Navy Lieutenant and ended his career at HMCS Brunswicker in St John NB. An avid outdoorsman and lover of golf, George was on a continuous journey to improve his skills. Active in the Lions Clubs of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick for many years, his work led to him being name District Governor for the Lions clubs of Nova Scotia, and subsequently those of New Brunswick and Maine. In addition to his wife, Pauline, George is survived by his children: Raymond Carnahan of Colorado Springs, CO; Ron Carnahan of Norfolk, VA, with his wife Nathaly, and children Courtney and Ryan; and, Roger Carnahan of Fredericton, NB, with his wife Brenda and children Nicholas and Thomas. He was loved by all and will be sorely missed. There will be no public service or visitation. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick.

COFFIN, Tristram Edward (Ted) - Dartmouth - Following a brief illness, Ted Coffin quietly passed away surrounded by members of his family on September 28, 2015. Ted was born in Ottawa on November 28, 1925, the first child of Laurance Leland and Elizabeth M. (Bartlett) Coffin. After completing his formal education, Ted served as an officer in the Royal Canadian Navy. Following an Honourable Discharge, he had a civilian career at Dalhousie University, allowing him to raise his family in his adopted home of Dartmouth. In his retirement, Ted spent his time enjoying his family, serving the community through the Knights of Columbus, and volunteering at his church. Ted was pre-deceased by his parents, his wife Audrey Beryl (Stevens) and his oldest son Tristram Thomas Laurance. He is survived by his sister Ann Young, his children Steven (Lorraine), Mary (Howard) Byrne, Audrey (David) Tufts, Michael (Janise), Patricia Hurley, Gregory (Mary Brocklehurst), Catherine (Doug) Hannah, and Frances (Bill) Buott; and by sixteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Ted was known to say that “Flowers are for the living”, so in lieu of flowers, he would have appreciated donations made in his name to community groups (Food Banks, Hope Cottage, Feeding Others of Dartmouth etc,) to the Knights of Columbus, the Canadian Cancer Society or an organization of your choice. COOPER, Christopher Glenn - Dartmouth, passed away peacefully at home on November 8, 2015 Born in Kingston, Ontario on March 25, 1943 He is predeceased by his father Horace, mother Margery, brother Robin and his wife Mary Canova (Steele). Chris is survived by his daughter Natalie Cormier, (Jim) grandsons Christian James and Cameron Troy Cormier, Mary’s three children Vanessa, Maria and Angelo, his sister Pamela Furter and his loyal and constant companion “Cracker”. A graduate of KCVI in Kingston he enrolled in Metallurgical Engineering and the Naval ROTP (Regular Officer Training Plan) at Queens University graduating in 1965 as a, S/Lt with a B.SC. in Metallurgical Engineering. As a young officer he was deployed to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1967 to study naval architecture and marine engineering graduating in 1970 with a Masters degree. Chris held a variety of positions with the Royal Canadian Navy and earned a promoted to the rank of Commander. Chris retired from the Navy in 1982 and joined the Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Fisheries Development Branch as a Naval Architect. After several years of productive work the Fisheries Development Branch was downsized with Chris becoming the Region’s staff Naval Architect and the fishing gear engineer responsible for the fishing gear innovations including the evaluation and adoption of square mesh netting to facilitate escapement of undersized fish, the introduction of separator grates for the shrimp fishery and the successful development and exploitation of the silver hake fishery. Chris retired from Fisheries in 1995 and opened a used bookstore, Dustjacket Books and Treasures, employing a fulltime staff of 2 employees which he successfully operated until he sold the company in 2013. Chris succumb to cancer after a long and courageous battle surrounded by his family and friends on November 8, 2015. Chris will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. CROWELL, George Donald Irving - 94, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 21, 2015 at Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Hospital in Halifax. Born in Clark’s Harbour on May 28, 1921 to the late Washington and Hilda (Daley) Crowell. He is survived by his son David (Karen) of Cole Harbour; daughter Joanne of Lower Sackville; son Donald (Wanda) of Lower Sackville; grandchildren Nicholas of Fort MacMurray and Matthew of Kentville; Chelsea and Jeremy of Liverpool, Brittni and Brady of Halifax and sister Isobel Blades of Centreville. He was predeceased by his wife Betty (Ptolemy); daughter Janet Smith and brothers Gerald, Gordon and Robert. George started his electronics career during World War II as a telegraphist on Fairmile patrol boats protecting Canada’s eastern seaboard. After the war, he was stationed at various radio installations around Canada and finished his service at Lake Albro radio station. He witnessed the VE Day riots in Halifax and the Bedford Magazine explosion. Saving himself and the radio station’s puppy mascot before the windows blew in. He joined Steel and Engine Products Limited (STENPRO) in Liverpool and for many years repaired and installed all manner of marine electronics. Later he became an employee of Nova Scotia Power as a technician, making sure the electricity flowed to all parts of the province. He retired from there after 15 years of service. George’s interests included fishing, bird and animal watching, photography, gardening and spending days at the cottage on Ponhook Lake. He played clarinet for the Bowater Mersey Band and performed at many functions including concerts at the 1967 Canadian Expo in Montreal. One of his passions was a s a “ham” radio operator. He had an impressive array of radio and antenna gear that allowed him to make contact with “hams” around the world. During his later years he spent most every Sunday going for a drive in the country of the nearest church supper with his friend Louisa. He had a thirst for knowledge, especially about maritime history and was always reading books or “playing” on the computer. The family wish to thank the staff at both Queens General Hospital and camp Hill Veterans Memorial Hospital for their kind and compassionate care during dad’s declining health. DANIS, Joseph Guerin Roma (Garry) - In his 83rd year, after a heroic and exhausting battle, our beloved father, Garry, died peacefully in his sleep on October 27, 2015, in Ancaster, Ont. Garry was predeceased by his father, Aime and mother, Laura (Guerin); his wonderful and beloved wife, Florence (Newcombe); sisters,-Myrelle and Ghislaine; brothers, Serge, Robert and Rolland. Survived by his children, Tommy, Michelle (Steve), Tony, Jackie (Michael), Scott and Rollande along with his sisters,-Yolande, Rochelle, Aline and Germance and brother, Lionel. Garry leaves behind many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. An accomplished musician, Garry served in the Naval division of the Canadian Armed Forces retiring after 25 years. He then went on to become a respected business man and later in retirement he took to carpentry, continuing until the onset of his illness. Many will remember Garry and for most the void will never be filled. He will be remembered for his sense of humour, thoughtfulness and kindness as well as his great generosity. Garry did not just make friends, he extended his heart and made those friends part of his family. With deep warmth and thanks we wish to mention the wonderful people of Seeleys Bay who have been Garry's lifeline and support over the last 10 years. Norma Leadbeater has been his special friend and confidant, as well as all his friends from the Breakfast Club. And finally, to all the people who helped to support not only Dad, but we the family, during the past year. His wonderful family doctor, Dr. Arawn Therrien, the PSW's who cared for him, and the staff at The Meadows in Ancaster. DesCHAMP, William Whitman Sr. - age 89, Shelburne, passed away peacefully in Surf Lodge Nursing Home, Lockeport, on Thursday, November 26, 2015. Born in Shelburne, he was a son of the late William and Sarah DesChamp. Bill was a loving father and grandfather. He was a hard worker all his working life. He was a veteran of the Second World War,-Royal Canadian Navy. Bill was a forester, a boat builder and owned and operated his own construction business. DEVEAU, Gerald (Ross) - age 81 of Halifax. On Monday, June 22, 2015, Ross gently left this earth in Arborstone Enhanced Care, Purcells Cove. Born February 11, 1934 in Yarmouth, he was the first-born son of the late Joseph Deveau and the late Iris Ballantyne. Ross is survived by his son, David; daughters, Kim and Lynn (Ed Zethof ); grandsons, Garnet and David; great-grandson, Phoenix; brothers, Ron (Gail DeVeau) and Wayne (Gail DeVeau); and special nieces, Michelle, Dana and nephew, Matthew. Ross was predeceased by his grandson, William. Ross was proud to have served in the Canadian Forces Navy as a Medical Assistant. Upon retirement Ross was a Chief Warrant Officer and earned the nickname 'Doc'. Following that he worked for Canada Post. Our dad will be most remembered as being an animal whisperer, a storyteller, quick-witted and a good friend with a wicked sense of humour. Dad you are loved and will be missed by so many. DOWTHWAITE, Jon Anthony - After a long battle with dementia (Picks Disease) and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), we announce that Jon passed away on Friday, November 20, 2015, at the age of 76. Jon was predeceased by his loving wife, Ellie Dowthwaite, of 51 years. Jon was a caring father to Diana (Paul Leck), Andrea (Jim Power), Linda (Ken Naugle) and Joanna. He was affectionately known as 'Gramps' to Jon, William, Erika, Christopher, Monika and Luke. Jon was predeceased by his parents, James and Doris Dowthwaite. Jon very much enjoyed visits with longtime friends, Sadie and Patricia, and Jan at Northwood at the Harbour. Jon worked hard throughout his career and retired from the Canadian Navy in 1977 and then enjoyed a second career with Siemens Canada. He loved his work and enjoyed repairing ships of every size and make. Every trip out to work on a ship meant that he came home with a story. His passion for repairing extended to the family home and calling a 'repairman' was not something ever done. It was often said that 'Jon could fix everything, except broken balloons.' Dry wit with a touch of humor is how you would describe Jon's demeanor and he always kept you on your toes; you always ended up with a big smile after talking with him. Jon lived in Northwood for his last two and a half years and he enjoyed an extended family with all who lived and worked there; particularly at 8 Center. Jon's family extend a deep sense of gratitude for all the Northwood staff. Jon's body has been donated to the Dalhousie University,-Faculty of Medicine, Body Donation Program. It is with great hope that the research on Picks and COPD will be of benefit to society in the future. A celebration of Jon's life will be held in the summer of 2016 and a notice will be posted at a later date. DRYSDALE, Stuart Dixon (Dick) (29 Apr 1919 - 20 Mar 2015) - was born in Ottawa Ontario, the eldest son of the late Norman and Ruth Drysdale, and was brought up in Montreal West with younger brother Douglas. Stuart was married in 1942 to Florence Ruth (nee Morris) who currently resides in Halifax. Stuart lived a full and rewarding life enjoying activities including hockey, squash, curling, studying the stock market, fishing, boating and model trains. His ability in mathematics brought him to a 40 year career as a draughtsman with the Dominion Bridge Company in Lachine P.Q. He worked on buildings including Place Ville Marie and the Canadian Pavilion at the 1967 World's fair, and several bridges across eastern Canada. His employment at the "Bridge Company" was interrupted when he enlisted during World War II and served as a Royal Canadian Navy Chief Petty Officer stationed out of Esquimalt, B.C. At war's end Florence and Stuart moved back east to Lachine Quebec where they started a family. Son Clifford Dixon (wife Alice) and daughter Susan Margaret now reside in Nova Scotia. In their later years Stuart and Florence moved to the Maritimes to be close to family. His grandchildren include David (wife Daphne) and John (wife Sarah) and three great grandchildren Mary, Olivia, and Andrew. Arrangements have been entrusted to the JA Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, N.S. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, April 25th from 2-4 in JA Snow Funeral Home. FRASER, James. Dr. - Dad passed away peacefully at Joseph Brant Hospital, Burlington, Ontario on Friday, February 19, 2016 at the age of 82 with his daughter Alison by his side. Dad was predeceased by his parents Jim and Nan Fraser, an infant sister Iris, his beloved wife Angela and his cherished grandson, Andrew Pinkham. He is lovingly remembered by his daughters Jean (Fraser) Fader, Alison Fraser (Bill Pozeg), Catharine Fraser (Mitchell Sidwell), his grandson Christopher Fader and by family and friends in Ontario, Nova Scotia, the U.K and the U.S. Dad moved to Burlington in 2007 to be closer to “his three girls” and grandsons. Prior to moving to Ontario, he lived in Falmouth, Nova Scotia with his wife Ann following retirement from his family medical practice in Bedford, N.S. Born in Purley, England, Dad studied medicine at St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge University on a music scholarship. It was in Cambridge that he met the love of his life, his “Annie.” Following graduation and his medical residency at St. Mary’s Hospital in London, England, Dad joined the Royal Canadian Navy and moved to Canada with his wife and infant daughter Jean. He was commissioned as a Surgeon-Lieutenant aboard the aircraft carrier, HMCS Bonaventure. After leaving the navy, Dad set up his practice in Bedford, Nova Scotia where he was a kind and gentle family doctor for many generations of families for more than 32 years. Dad’s love of music began at an early age. He sang in the King’s Choir, performing for King George VI and his mother Queen Mary at Westminster Abbey and while at university, he performed in Gilbert & Sullivan operettas. He played drums, piano, clarinet and saxophone in several bands over the years. He enjoyed his final years in Burlington with his family and as an active member of the Burlington Concert Band and the Silver Swing Big Band. Private Cremation has taken place. The family extends its deepest thanks to the medical staff at the Juravinski Cancer Centre and Joseph Brant Hospital for their care and kindness, in particular the nursing staff of 6West. GEDDES, William (Bill) Amos - 89 of Bridgetown passed away October 30, 2015 in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Truro he was a son of the late Alexander “Sandy” and Alice (Gahan) Geddes. Bill was a member of the Merchant Navy and the Canadian Navy and was a gunner on the Norwegian Supply ship the Polarsol during World War II. He later became a bookkeeper for C.B. Robinson in Kentville, he then moved to Bridgetown and worked for J.H. Hicks and Sons, Moir Motors and Everett & Smith Ltd where he worked for 36 years. Bill enjoyed fishing, bird hunting, reading and smoking his pipe, and he served as a Town Councillor in Bridgetown. He is survived by daughter Constance (Milledge) Sheridan of Bridgetown, sisters: Beryl Gay of Truro, Heather White of Newfoundland, Betty Lindsay of Vancouver; grandchildren Lynn (Eric) Sheridan-Davis of New Jersey, Vanessa (Griff) Peters of California, Keith Geddes of Calgary; 5 great grandchildren; daughter-in-law Sharon Spaargaren of High River, AB., several nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his wife Joan Mae Holmes, son Christopher. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held 3-7 p.m. Sunday November 8, 2015 at Bill’s home, 461 Granville Street. GLADWIN, Wynyard Robert (Joe) - age 95, of Kentville, died March 17, 2015. Born in Halifax on October 20, 1919 he was the eldest son of the late Gerald and Elizabeth (Anderson) Gladwin. He was a veteran of the Second World War, having served with the RCNVR from 1939-1945 on HMCS Esquimalt and HMCS St. Croix. He was predeceased by brother, Gerald Charles Gladwin; wife, Ruth Caroline (Mitchell) Gladwin and daughter, Jane Elizabeth Townsend. He is survived by son, Gerry Gladwin (Jose), Greenfield, NS; son-in-law, Hugh Townsend, Dartmouth, NS; grandchildren, Gavin, Charlotte, Graham, Kaesy and Stefan as well as six great grandchildren. Cremation has taken place. A family memorial celebration will be held at a later date. It was Joe's request that donations in memory should be sent to the Salvation Army. GOODWIN, Gary Robert Age 68, of Boutiliers Point, passed away on Wednesday, July 29, 2015, at home. Born in Amherst, he was a son of the late Robert F. and Beryl (Jones) Goodwin. Gary started his career with the Royal Canadian Navy as a Storesman before working at the former Victoria General Hospital. He then spent a number years with Canadian Coast Guard before going with the Bedford Institute of Oceanography until semi-retiring with the Commissionaires of Nova Scotia. Survived by his wife, Janet (Hendsbee); brother, Bob, Cole Harbour; sister, June (Ernie) Rooke, Amherst; his aunt, Brenda Irving in Wales and his four nieces. Predeceased by his birth parents, he also lost his uncle, Harry 'Pap' and aunt, Marion 'Mum', who raised him through his childhood. He kept many of his friends from childhood and made many more throughout his life. Gary had a passion for hockey, the Toronto Blue Jays, music, Coronation Street and, recently, the feral cats at the Halifax dockyards. Gary, you will be sadly missed. GOYETCHE, Arthur Raymond - age 96, passed away in the Taigh Na Mara Long Term Care Home in Glace Bay on October 22, 2015. Born in Cape Auguet, Richmond Co., he resided in Sydney and West Bay for a number of years. He was a son of Jeffrey Arthur and Emily Ann (DeCoste) Goyetche. Arthur enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy and served in the North Atlantic for several years aboard the HMCS Digby, HMCS Mayflower, and the HMCS Oakville before being discharged in 1945. He then attended Business College in Halifax and subsequently secured employment with Veterans' Affairs where he worked for 35 years, serving as Manager of the Cape Breton District Office toward the end of his career. Arthur was a lifelong member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 47, St. Peter's and a member of the Cape Breton Naval Association. Arthur enjoyed life to the fullest, travelling extensively and making friends wherever he went. He was a true gentleman whose charm and positivity impressed all who knew him. He was predeceased by his first wife, Marie Chaisson; and by his second wife, Ialeen Hopper; twin brothers, Godfrey and Clarence and Wilfred, Delore, Mary Louise, and a sister in infancy. Arthur is survived by his sister, Ida Stone; sons, Brian (Christena), West Bay; Aubrey (Clara), Sydney; James (Teresa), Halifax. He was Papa to granddaughters, Janine Goyetche, Corinne Baker (Ryan), and Sarah Goyetche; grandsons, Robbie and Derek Goyetche; great-granddaughter, Camrynne Baker. In celebration of Arthur's life, a Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, October 28 at 2 p.m. in St. Margaret's Roman Catholic Church, West Bay Road, with Father Callistus Abazie officiating. GRANT, Stephen Thomas, CPO2, RCN (1954-2015) - The family of Stephen Thomas Grant of Halifax announces his passing at home at the age of 60 on March 13, 2015. Predeceased by his loving wife Danielle, and his parents Mary and Steve Grant; survived by his son Shaun (Tracy), granddaughters Samantha and Hannah, siblings Moira, Sheilagh (Joe), Phil, and Mike, and his nieces and nephews. Steve joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1978, served on multiple ships, and retired in 2005 after 26 years of dedicated service. A lifelong golfer, his passion was to drive the ball. When not playing golf, he could be found enjoying it from his favourite easy chair. A devoted husband, sailor, father, and grandfather, there was nothing he would not do for his family. GRAYDON, Leslie Patrick, Lt (N) - We mourn the passing of Leslie Patrick Graydon, 86, who died unexpectedly at home on Remembrance Day, November 11th, 2015. Born June 29, 1929 in London to Arthur and Jean Graydon (Worrad). Patrick lived through 'the Blitz' and was thereby moved to service with the Royal Navy. He was married to Doreen Joyce Graydon (Cull), in Portsmouth, and sired two children, Kim and John. He emigrated to Canada in 1961, where he joined the Royal Canadian Navy, achieving the rank of Lieutenant. His final duty with the RCN was as an inspecting officer with the Atlantic cadet corps. Following retirement from active duty, he moved to the Coast Guard where he administered several search and rescue vessels. He retired at the age of 67. Patrick was an avid golfer, recently celebrating 'shooting his age', and overcoming his nemesis in the process: Grandview Hole 16. He took great pleasure in tinkering, listening to classical music (and playing it on the piano), and practising his golf swing, beheading dandelions in the yard with a broomstick. Pat and Joyce were competitive ballroom dancers for many years, thoroughly enjoying the many people they met and danced with. They continued their love of dancing and Tai Chi until prevented by the onset of Joyce's Alzheimer's. Patrick loved to travel, frequenting Florida and elsewhere. A childlike spirit, he loved Disney World, which he visited many times - especially the Rose & Crown Pub. Patrick was a warm and beautiful man, loved by everyone in his life. Blessed with patience, wisdom and gregarity, he never shied from conversation and was deeply connected with life and people of all ages, from all walks of life. Patrick was a committed husband, and lovingly nursed his ailing wife for many years. He was very pleased with the level of care provided to her by the wonderful staff at Oakwood Terrace (C unit). To Wilfred, who cared for him in his last years, he benefited from your loyalty, energy and support; and similarly to the many healthcare professionals who touched his life. To all the special people who were close to him, his friends and extended family, he greatly appreciated your time, attention and friendship over these final difficult years. To all the wonderful people at his favorite restaurants, you know who you are, thank you. And to everyone who gave of themselves to make he and his wife's lives better, he appreciated everything. He is survived and greatly missed by his children, Kim Arnold (Wilfred) and John Graydon (Lori); grandchildren, Mark (Alishya), Alex and Andrew; step grandchildren, Roberta (Norm) and Nicole (Jamie); great-granddaughter, Kaya; step great-granddaughter, Kailey (Jamie); and nieces, Jayne and Susan. He is predeceased by his parents and his brother, Louis. In accordance with Patrick's final wishes, his body has been left to further the cause of human knowledge, and his ashes will be scattered upon the Atlantic Ocean, which he so dearly loved. We will never forget the lessons of love and kindness demonstrated in your life.

GUINARD, Fernand Joseph (Pedro) (16 Sep1919 - 18 Jun 2015) - 95, Dartmouth, NS passed away Thursday June 18, 2015 at Oceanview Manor, Eastern Passage. Born in Montreal, P.Q. he was the son of the late Alfred and Anita (Boucher) Guinard. He was a veteran of the Second World War. After retiring from the Royal Canadian Navy he worked as an underwriter for an insurance Company in Montreal. He did not lose his love for the sea and trained cadets in Montreal. He also spent many vacations by crewing on sailboats over the years. Pedro made many friends throughout his life and spent hours on his typewriter corresponding with them. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family and leaves to grieve, his daughter, Donna (Roy) MacDonald Cole Harbour, sons Gary (Lila) Fall River, Paul (Brenda) Hammonds Plains. Grandchildren Amy (Matt) Gillis, Eric Arts (Rylee), Jamis (Breanna) MacKinnon, Pamela MacDonald (Grover), Christina MacDonald (Donna). Great Grandchildren Ryder, Hunter, Brandon, Brody, Nicky, Austin. He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years Edith (Mahar). HANLON, Richard Arthur  (1937 -2015) - It is with deep regret we announce the passing of our father, "Dick" on July 26,2015 at St. Martha's Regional Hospital in Antigonish. Born in Canso, he was the son of the late Mamie (Coutreau) and Richard Edgar Hanlon. Dick left Canso at the age of 18 in 1956 to enlist in the Canadian Navy followed by brother Pat in 1957. He retired after 22 years to join the offshore industry in the Beaufort Sea until1994. In 1995 Betty and Dick settled in Mulgrave and he began working at Point Tupper Marine (NuStar) until sidelined by illness earlier this year. Dick relished going to work, enjoying the social rapport with co-workers and had no serious thoughts on retirement. There were many family gatherings in Mulgrave over the past 20 years and Dad really enjoyed his growing family. Our parents were very happy in Mulgrave, having very special neighbors . They became a fixture at Card plays in Mulgrave and Havre Boucher and enjoyed watching golf and the Blue Jays in addition Dick enjoyed hunting, fishing, and telling stories with his sons and grandchildren at the camp. He was a fair hand at carpentry or anything he put his hand to. Most of all, our father possessed integrity. He will be sadly missed by his wife of 55 years, Elizabeth (Walker), Mulgrave ; children; Richard (Brenda) Hanlon and children, Gaelan, Tara, Neil, Linwood; Karen (Wayne) Paquette and children Shannon, Kevin and Ryan, Havre Boucher; Thomas (Dorothy) and children Thomas and James, Cambridge, Ontario;. HEIGHTON, Ralph Gerard - With a few tears but many more wonderful memories, the family of Ralph Gerald Heighton, of Pictou, must share the news of his peaceful passing, on September 11, 2015, surrounded by those he fought hard to remain with, at home, during one of his favourite events - 'Friday Night at the Ranch'. Ralph spent 89 busy years raising five children and 13 grandchildren along the way. The story of Ralph began on January 9th, 1926 when he was born to Mary (Sutherland), and the late Ralph Heighton. Ralph was educated in Pictou, and was attending Pictou Academy when the Second World War and the call of service urged him to join the Royal Canadian Navy. He served on several ships in the North Atlantic. VE-Day found him back in his beloved Pictou, and soon after began his varied work career at Ferguson Industries. It was during this time that Ralph began the pursuit of Jean, who would later become his bride of 60 years. Ralph went on the work in sales, primarily plumbing equipment, with William Stairs Son and Morrow and later as co-owner of Frizzels. As the Administrator of Edward Mortimer Place he oversaw construction of the facility, and was a much-loved and respected boss to many. The pride of his career however would be his years at the AEF No. 144 Pictou, from which he retired in his 87th year as the Community Liaison Officer, Chair Community Advisory Board. The many projects completed and the many members he mentored and encouraged are amongst his greatest accomplishments. He was affectionately known as 'the Admiral' at the AEF, or to Steve simply 'Skipper'. Community service was a way of life for Ralph, be it his lifelong service and loyalty to the Conservative Party, his years on Pictou Town Council as deputy mayor, his work on the Pictou Lobster Carnival where he also served as chairman, many years as a school board member and as a devoted member and past president of the Admiral Murray Naval Veteran Association. Ralph was a lifetime member of St. James Anglican Church, Pictou. He was never afraid to fight for what he believed was best, and was a tireless letter writer to assert the cause. His stenographers (Jean and the staff at the 'Force') can attest to this. Left to miss him and share the memories are his wife, Jean (MacKeil) to whom he was devoted, and she to him. He raised his children to believe they could accomplish anything, they always knew he had their backs no matter how things turned out; sons, Andy (Sharon) and Ralph Jr.; daughters, Pam Rannelli (Michael), Mary MacCallum (Bradley) and Lesley (Tracy MacCarthy, daughter Megan); grandchildren, Kate Starkey (Dale), Alison Heighton-Lamb (Brent) and Mark Heighton (Alexandra), Luke (Rita) and Christine (Justin) Rannelli, Sarah and Kathleen MacCallum, Bobby and Cole MacIvor, Sophie Heighton, Logan, Keil and Leigha MacDonald. Dad enjoyed many, many wonderful friendships through the years, and cherished them all. Saturday breakfast club at Sharon's Place was his favourite weekly ritual. Many world problems were solved and political strategies argued over plates of home fries. Dear to his heart were cousin and best friend, Bruce Heighton; special friends, Murray Porter, Steve Tucker, Donnie Murray, Peter Fraser and Art Mac-Donald. The AEF members will forever hold a special place with us, for the many years of respect, service and devotion they showed to Dad. Even in later years with his vision failing and his steps a little less solid, we always knew he was in the best of hands when he was at work. Those who departed before will be welcoming above, he was predeceased by his parents; sisters-in-law, Margaret and Anna; brothers-in-law, Alfie, Fred, Ralph, Blaine and John. We are forever grateful to Dr. Gerry Farrell, nurse Rhonda Langille and the whole Palliative Care team and VON. HILTON, William (Bill) George - age 79 of Westphal passed away Thursday, September 3, 2015 at the Halifax Infirmary, QE II. Born in Detroit Michigan, the son of the late Earl and Valetta (Edwards) Hilton. Bill grew up in Ontario with his large family and were active in the farming community. At the age of 17, with his mother’s blessing Bill joined the navy and retired after almost 25 years of service as Chief Petty Officer 2nd class. Bill spent many happy years with Margaret and “the boys”. The past 13 years, Bill and companion Val, travelled to Ontario visiting Bill’s family and friends. They wintered in Florida and Texas, enjoying friends, sunshine and fishing. Bill is survived by, sons, Larry (Colleen), Ronnie, Peter (Pattie), Kenny (Debbie) all of Dartmouth, David (Therese), Calgary; many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Bill is also survived by companion, Velma “Val” Frizzell and her family; brothers, Jim and Jack and sisters, Darlene and Barbara. He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret. HORRIDGE, John - aged 86 of Wilmot, passed away Wednesday, August 26, 2015 in Grand View Manor, Berwick. Born in Bolton, England, he was a son of the late Thomas and Elizabeth (Clegg) Horridge. In his early years, John served in the Royal Canadian Navy as a Chief Petty Officer. In 1987 he founded Nova Millwrights in Middleton. John was an avid golfer, reader and history buff. John will be remembered by his family as being very loyal and generous and will be sadly missed by many. HUNTER, Irene Josephine (1937-2015) - 77 of Halifax, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, April 2, 2015. She will be greatly missed by her 7 children, Cindy (Gary), Halifax, Patrick (Michelle), Russell, Ont., Tom (Michelle), Jill (Jim) both of Halifax, Jodi (Mark), Athabasca, AB, Barb (Mike) Halifax and Shelley (Matthew) London, Ont.; 14 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, John James Hunter, the love of her life whom she met while serving in the Royal Canadian Navy and infant daughter, Debra Ann. ISEPPON, Ivan - It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Ivan Iseppon on August 26, 2011. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Matilda (nee Di Biasi). Also by his son Alec (Denise) two granddaughters (Kayleigh and Shannon) in Wisconsin, his son-in-law Marty, his brother Ateo 'Red' and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He served in the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve and was the youngest Chief Petty Officer on corvette duty in the North Atlantic during WW II and then served in the Merchant Marines. He was a heavy equipment mechanic and made Lancaster, N.Y. his home. His death was peaceful but unexpected. Cremation and a private service has taken place. JACKSON, Andrew (23 Jan 1938 - 17 Sep 2015) - It is with sadness that the family of Mr. Andrew Jackson announces his sudden passing at the Kirkland & District Hospital on September 17, 2015. Andrew is survived by his daughters Janice (John) Sullivan, Diane (Bernie) Labine. Also survived by his grandchildren who meant the world to him; Krista Labine (Charles Rousselle), Colin Bradley (Mandy Burns), Leah Bradley, Colina (Martin) Boileau, Richard Labine, Keegan Sullivan (Meghan McPhee), Anita Labine, Joseph Labine, Ethan Labine (Marie Allaire) and Liam Sullivan. Also survived by his sisters Thelma Taylor and Jean Rivard; many cherished in-laws, nieces and nephews. As a young man he served in the Navy stationed out of Halifax, Nova Scotia. When he moved to Kirkland Lake with his family he started on at the Adams Mine as a millwright and member of the Steelworkers. He was a proud member of the Legion. He retired from the Town of Kirkland Lake where he was a Sub-Foreman in the Works department. He enjoyed his retirement spending lots of time with his family, camping and travelling. KETTLEY, John Robert James - 91, formerly of New Minas and Dartmouth, passed away Monday, December 7, 2015 in the Veteran's Unit of Soldier's Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Orillia, Ontario, he was a son of the late Edward and Mabel (Middleton) Kettley. He was a naval veteran of both the Second World War and the Korean Conflict, serving on several ships, including HMCS Micmac. He was also employed at a nail factory and carriage factory, both in Ontario. Upon moving to Dartmouth, he worked at the Halifax Shipyard and was then employed as a dispatcher with Canada Post at the Halifax Train Station mail room for 35 years. John was an accomplished boxer and loved sports of all kinds. He is survived by two daughters, Diana Leck, Vanier, Ontario; Suzanne Kettley, Ottawa; two sons, David (Tracey), Cheverie; Kenneth (Christine), Ottawa; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Emily "Della" Bowser; his companion, Marion Johnson; a brother, Harry. Cremation has taken place. There was no visitation, by request. A Royal Canadian Legion service and reception was held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 12, 2015 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. From a young age he worked hard on the farm and enjoyed country living. He moved to Victoria, BC in 1968 to join the Royal Canadian Navy. He married Odile Hince on July 18, 1970, and they raised their family in Victoria and Abbotsford BC. They were married for 45 years. Ron retired at the age of 49, then spent his retirement years traveling abroad with Odile and enjoying time at home. In addition to the love for his family, travel and nature held a special place in his heart. Ron found joy in talking to friends and family, following sports, reading, doing crossword puzzles and watching birds. Unfortunately, Ron developed cancer, from which he had been suffering for 2 and a half years before he passed. He will definitely be remembered for his gentlemanly manner, his hospitality and generosity. As per Ron’s wishes no funeral services will be held. The family would like to thank Dr. Greyling, Dr. Bond, Dr. Schaikh, Dr. Singh and Dr. Duncan for their care during Ron’s last few years. LEVY, Edward Louis (Ted), CD - It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ted, age 74 of Prospect, who died suddenly at home on Friday, May 29, 2015. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Edward G. and Marie (Christian) Levy. He was predeceased by son, Edward S.; brother, John; grandson, Sean Mason and several aunts and uncles. Ted was in the Navy for 12 years and received the Medal of Good Conduct. He worked at the dockyard in the control systems shop until his retirement in 1995. Ted loved fishing, hunting, riding his ATV and going out on his boat. He was an avid reader, had a great sense of humour and loved his beagles. Ted was a quiet, thoughtful man who said what he meant and meant what he said. We couldn’t have asked for a better husband, father or grandfather. Ted was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 153, White’s Lake and held many offices over the years including that of President. He received the RCL Meritorious Service Award in 1989. Ted will be remembered by his wife of 56 years, Jean (Stewart); daughters, Christine (John), Darlene; grandchildren, CJ (Cheryl), Bonnie, Natasha (Jason), Edward M. (Chistianna); great-grandchildren, Cameron, Cayden, Angel, Bonita and Emma. Cremation has taken place under the care of J. LOMBARDO, Frank - Died peacefully on Friday, June 12, 2015 in Guysborough Memorial Hospital at the age of 90, surrounded by his loving family. Frank is survived by his wife, Doreen ( Halloran); his children, Nancy (Phil) O’Regan, Sharon (Mike) Hogan, Peter (Cathy), and Brent (Rhonda); grandchildren, Dawn, Katie, Linda, Mathew, Kayla, Kelly, Hanna, Taylor Teagan, Keaton; and step-grandchildren, Craig, Brad, Jen and Graham. He was a proud great-grandfather to Madison, Gianna, Josie, Maelle, Evelyn and Jackson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Pietro and Francesca Lombardo; and his siblings, Andrew, Jean, Frances, Joey and Rocco. Frank was born in Ottawa, Ont., on August 22 , 1924. He graduated from Carleton University in 1952 with a certificate in Engineering. He was awarded Athlete of the Year at Carleton where he 'lettered' in his senior year, competing in football, swimming and hockey. Frank proudly served in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War and was a dedicated member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 81, Guysborough, where he held executive positions and demonstrated his strong commitment to honouring and supporting veterans. He worked for the Government of Canada, in the Department of Energy Mines and Resources for 52 years, both full-time as the Chief Technical Officer in charge of the Canadian Seismological Network and later as a part-time technician working from his retirement home in Guysborough. He stayed in contact with many of his work colleagues over the years and appreciated their calls and cards. During a field trip to Nova Scotia in 1955 he met and later married Doreen Halloran with the blessing of his beloved in-laws, Mary and Patrick Halloran. Frank and Doreen lived and raised their family in Ottawa, keeping strong connections to the Lombardo, Halloran and Phalen families. Frank’s love for the community of Guysborough was strong and after many years of summer visits, he retired and became a permanent resident. He was an active and dedicated member of St. Ann’s Parish and supported the Guysborough Lions Club, Guysborough Volunteer Fire Department, Meals on Wheels, East Guysborough Forest Owners, Federal Superannuates National Association, Nova Scotia Branch. He was a Nova Scotia Administrative Justice of the Peace for many years and presided over many weddings and gatherings for both family and community members. Grampy Frank, The 'Godfather' will be missed by all of his extended family of sisters and brothers-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews, to whom he provided advice, guidance and support. Through colourful commentary he arm-chair coached NHL, CFL and MLB teams. He was an avid Ottawa Senator’s fan and always held out hope for the Blue Jays. He loved to play cards, fish mackerel with his buddies and spend time with family at Farm Lake and Eldon’s Camp. After giving so much of his life to others, it was Frank’s turn to receive through loving and compassionate palliative care, at home and in the best health care facilities. He was supported in living every day to the fullest by 'Frankie’s Angels' - his care team of family, relatives, friends, caregivers, and health care professionals. Visitation will be today, June 15, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Guysborough. MASON, Murray Allan (Joe) - age 96, of Halifax, passed away peacefully into the arms of his Lord on November 8, 2015, surrounded by his loving family. Born on September 18, 1919, on Tancook Island, he was the second youngest son of the late Howard and Bridget (Langille) Mason. He worked as a shipwright and boatbuilder for many companies over the years and also served in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War. He retired in 1984, from the HMC Dockyard, after 34 years of service. Murray loved sailing and building schooners with his father and brothers. He was an accomplished carpenter and woodworker who generously gave of his talents to his family and friends well into his later years. Murray was a faithful long-time member of West End Baptist Church and served for many years on the Board of Trustees, Ushers, and Tellers Committees. He was so very proud of his family who will cherish and miss him dearly. He is survived by his children, Sharon and Norman Wiens of Dartmouth; Glenda and Howie Bennett, Kathryn and Bradley Gillie, and Steven, all of Halifax. Beloved grandchildren are Alana Wiens, Craig and Tonya Bennett, Bryan and Amy Wiens, Noelle and RenTnire, Matthew Bennett, Stephanie Gillie, Robyn and David Kehoe, and Chris Bennett. MATHESON, Eric - Died peacefully in Ivany Place on July 29, 2015, in Hammonds Plains, at the age of 92. Eric will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 72 years, Mae (Pearo/ MacAulay); his children: Malcolm (Margaret), Kenneth (Dawn), Linda, Colleen (Alan), and Gordie (Neala); granddaughters: Kelly (Joey), Angela (Barry), Carla (Mark), Stacey (John), Julie, Alana, Malissa (Ryan), Sara (Mark); 13 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Blanche Matheson, Mary Matheson, Agnes Matheson, and Gladys Walsh; brother-in-law, Lawrence Berrigan; his long-time friend, Reggie Murphy; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ada (Hickox) Matheson; brothers, Elmer, Jack (Alice), Homer (Jenny), Benjamin (Cathy), Major, Miller, Roddie; sisters, Eleanor (Herbie) Stanley and Isabella Berrigan as well as brothers in infancy, John Arthur and Arthur John. Born in Prince Edward Island, Eric was an avid sports fan, played competitive ball, hockey, and bowling well into his 60s. He enjoyed any competition - including a lively game of crib and 45s. Although he didn't like defeat, he was never a sore loser. Eric entered the Second World War at a young age and spent time as a radar operator on several ships, including two corvettes, the Lethbridge and Kenogame, where he participated in the Battle of the Atlantic until 1945. While in Sydney, Eric met and married the love of his life, Mae. He remained in the military for a number of years after the Second World War and finally settled in Halifax, where he worked as a custodian for a number of years at Workers' Compensation Board and Pine Haven. Eric enjoyed working on cars (or anything with a motor), helping others, and summer trips to Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and Cape Breton to visit family and friends. The visitation will be on Tuesday, August 4, from 1-2:30 p.m., with the ceremony from 2:30-3 p.m. in T.W. Curry Funeral Home in Sydney, and interment in Hardwood Hills, Sydney, Cape Breton. MATTE, John O. (1935-2015) - John passed away suddenly in his sleep at home in Bedford on March 23, 2015. He was born in Chatham, Ontario and joined the RCN in 1954 retiring in 1977. He went on to enjoy a second career as owner/operator of Sackville Lock and Key for another 20 years. John was truly a Mr-Fix-It and Jack-of-all trades. He was especially proud to have achieved/received his private pilot’s license in 1980 and to obtain his PADI I Scuba divers certification on his 65th birthday. He will miss his gym buddies from the Sackville Sports Stadium. John will be especially missed by his wife of 49 years Carmen (Forest), his cousin Ed Matt of Windsor, Ontario and special niece Linda Gansner of Courtney, BC as well as many other in law family and friends. Cremation has taken place. A Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Friday, March 27, 2015 at St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church, 1288 Bedford Highway, Bedford, reception to follow in the church hall. MILLER, John Francis - 91 of Fall River, NS, passed away March 27, 2015. John was born in Montreal and grew up in Springhill, NS. He was the son of the late Samuel and Margaret Miller. John was predeceased by his loving wife of 60 years, Lohta (Stewart) Miller, whom he adored; daughter, Michelle "Shelley" Miller, sisters, Betty Lowden, Margaret Page, Mary Burton. In his late teens, he moved to Halifax where he served in the Royal Canadian Navy Reserves during the Second World War. In 1945, after serving time in the RCN, John launched his career in life insurance and in December 1950, joined the Prudential Assurance Company of England. His success was immediate and earned him many promotions. Despite his supervisory responsibilities he rose to become one of the brightest stars in the Company. In 1954, John was the first life underwriter in the Maritimes to qualify for the Million Dollar Round Table and repeated the achievement in 1955 and 1956 to give him the highest honour of all MDRT as a Life Member for the past 57 Years. John was honoured in 1954 by leading all the Company's overseas representatives in the Overseas Honour Roll. He finished second in 1955 and was a leader again in 1956. He was a Life Branch Manager, Prudential Assurance Company, Halifax East Branch for 25 years, a very successful agency. John, with his great passion for the life insurance business, re-entered the field as an agent in 1978 and continued to work the business up until his death. During his career he was an active member on several boards related to the life insurance business; The Prudential Assurance Company's Advisory Board on three different occasions; Past President of Knights of the Round Table, highest production club of Prudential; Past President of the Life Underwriters Association on three occasions; served on the National Board of Life Underwriters Association for 10 years; Chairman of Local Sales Congress and Chairman of MDRT Days. He also slated time for community services during these years as a founding member of the Halifax chapter of the John Howard Society; President of Wentworth Valley Ski Club, where he and his family spent many weekends skiing during the winter; Chairman of CPGA Tournament in 1964; and the longest serving director for the Nova Scotia Heart Foundation Board of Directors. He is a past member of the Halifax Curling Club and the Ashburn Golf Club. John was also a mason raised at the lodge of St. Marks and an active member of John Albro Lodge #122. He was also a 32nd degree Scottish Rite and member of the Halifax Chapter of the Shriners. He was a member of the Halifax Club and enjoyed countless evenings of gourmet dining, fellowship, and games of bridge with the Bachelor Club. John served as an active member of the St. John's United Church, Fall River. He is survived his son, John Lee Miller, Indianapolis/Halifax, and his devoted four legged companion, Jack, who never left his side. There will be no visitation by family request. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 7th at 2:00 pm at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, followed by reception. Burial will take place in Pictou at a later date. MOIR, Clifford Anderson (21 Dec 1923 - 24 Oct 2015) - 91 of Dartmouth passed away on October 24, 2015 in the Camp Hill Veterans Hospital, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Cliff was born at 72 Jamieson Street, Dartmouth, the third of four children to the late Clifford A. Moir Sr. and Gladys (Hare) Moir. Cliff was very much a pillar of the family and a dedicated public servant blessed with a long life and the gift of many friends. He received all of his education in Dartmouth schools. During World War II, he volunteered for military service and served in the Royal Canadian Navy. Discharged on the West Coast, Cliff often told the story of an American sailor in San Diego recognizing, by his accent, that he was a Dartmouthian. Returning to civilian life, Cliff worked briefly as a coal clerk for the Cunard Co. He joined the Town of Dartmouth in 1947 as Deputy Town Clerk and Treasurer. Later promoted to Town Clerk and to City Administrator in 1961, he saw Dartmouth grow from a town of 2,500 to a City of over 60,000 residents. Over 40 years, Cliff served under nine mayors and was the recipient of many awards including the Lieutenant Governor's award for excellence in Public Administration, and the Queen's Jubilee medal. Post retirement, he served as Chairman of the Metropolitan Authority and Chairman of the Dartmouth General Hospital Charitable Foundation. In 2000, he was awarded the HRM Millennium Medal for his service to the Dartmouth General Hospital and was named Chairman Emeritus. Cliff was a lifelong member of Stair's Memorial United Church. In his youth, he paddled competitively for the Northstar Rowing Club. He was a former member of the Dartmouth Kiwanis Club, Brightwood Golf Club, the Dartmouth Curling Club and was the last surviving member of the Woolworth's Businessmen's Coffee Club. Cliff remained interested in and loved to discuss politics on all levels, sports, and anything happening in community affairs. He loved celebrating his birthday, and looked forward to parties with family and friends every year. On his 90th, even a blizzard couldn't keep him from the festivities. He was predeceased by his wife and the mother of his children Cora (Austin), his wife Barbara (Mason), sister Jean (Moir) Thomson, brother Donald A. Moir. Brothers-in-law John Otto, Lorne Zinck, Rae Austin, Tom Kershaw and Robert Thomson. Sister-in-law Mildred (Jill) Kershaw. Surviving are three sons Phillip (Joan) Dartmouth, Stephen (Catriona) Ottawa, and Christopher (Anne MacKinnon) West Porters Lake. Niece Bonny Thomson (Keith Cockersell) Dartmouth. Granddaughters Lori (Marc) Muise, and Jennifer (Rob Desjardins) Moir, grandsons Thomas (Chrissy Waters) Alastair, Fraser (Emily) and Logan. Three great grandchildren Mia Muise, Cora Muise and James Desjardins-Moir. Sister Betty R. Otto, Dartmouth and sisters-in-law Amy Moir, Lila Zinck and Joan Austin. Several nieces and nephews. The family extend their heartfelt thanks to the kind and caring staff at the Dartmouth General Hospital and Camp Hill Veterans Memorial hospital. Cremation has taken place. MOODY, Harold Samuel, Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class Boatswain, RCN - (Born: 07 Jan 1919 - died: 29 Aug 2015) 96, of Cornwallis Park, formerly of Hunts Point, Queens County, passed away Friday, August 28, 2015 at the Annapolis Royal Nursing Home where he received excellent care. Born in Ebbe Vale, South Wales, he was a son of the late Ernest and Hannah (Plaster) Moody. Harold joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1937 and served on many ships until retirement in 1962 as CPO. He was then employed at K&W bookbinding and Liverpool District Schools. Harold enjoyed his navy life as well as spending time with his family. He was a Life Member of Mersey Branch #38, Royal Canadian Legion, Liverpool and Chief and PO’s Association, and a friend to all who knew him. He will be missed by his son Lawrence (Donna); grandchildren Lori Moody (Greg Durling), Vicky Bennett (Keith), Mark Moody (Rochelle); great grandsons Justin Robicheau (Terri), Blake Robicheau, Devon, Daniel and Adam Bennett, Justin Daley (Ashley) and Caleb Moody. One great great grandson, Casey Robicheau. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret (Verge) and brother Ernest. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. MUGGAH, Revere (Paul)  - Age 86, son of the late James and Susan Muggah (Revere), passed away suddenly surrounded by family on March 5th, 2015. Born in Glace Bay on Oc­tober 15th, 1928, Paul was a long­time resident of Dartmouth. He served 25 years in the Royal Cana­dian Navy and continued his ca­reer as a machi­nist at Transworld Distributing. Paul took such pride in his garden; he en­joyed a good game of crib, lis­tening to his fa­vorite music and was known to 'shake a leg'. Another of Paul’s fa­vorite hobbies was designing and creating beautiful works of stained glass. His faith was unwavering and he was an active member of St. Luke’s Parish. He spent time as a volunteer Cub Scout leader and, in recent years, as a board member of the Tinnitus Society of Nova Scotia. Paul’s selfless nature benefited many over the years. Paul’s day was never complete without his 'daily chuckles' that he got from the love of his life and best friend. Prede­ceased by parents and siblings, brother, James; sister, Anna and ba­by Grace. Survived by wife of 64 years, Betty (Simmons); daughters, Paulette (Gord), Deborah (Peter); grandchildren, Troy (Mendee), Krista, Alyssa (Rob); great-grandchildren, Marcus and Matthew. Paul will be dearly missed and fondly remem­bered. McCORMICK, Richard Vernon (Skip) - 74 years of Springhill, passed away on Friday, July 31, 2015 in the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre. Born in Springhill, he was a son of the Late Charles Percy and Kathleen (Corbett) McCormick. He was an active member of Springhill Baptist Church. Royal Canadian Legion Branch #17, Springhill, and active within the community. Richard was also a member of the O'Rourke AA Group and the Chiefs and Petty Officers Association. Richard spent three years with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders Reserve, after which he joined the Canadian Navy on September 30, 1957. He retired after 34 years service. Richard was a radar technician and air traffic controller. After retiring in 1982, Richard was a Commanding Officer of the Canadian Sea Cadet Corps in Amherst. He also worked as a carpenter with Burton Smith for ten years. He enjoyed faithfully watching the Blue Jays play, working on his house and cottage and being with his family. He will be sadly missed by his wife of fifty-three years, Ethel A. (nee Embree); sons, Darren (Debbie) McCormick, Dartmouth, C.P. (Jennifer) McCormick, Geary, NB; daughters, Charlene "Beth" (George) Meechan, Riverview, NB; brother, Roderick (Mary Lou) Fletcher McCormick, Huntsville, ON; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Roger Kim and daughter, Marlene Eve both in infancy; a twin brother, Reginald Vaughn; a brother, James Douglas Keith, and a sister, Beverly Ann. McKERCHER, Carey Cameron - Known as Gary by many, passed away peacefully at Langley, B.C. on February 8, 2006, aged 80 years. Predeceased by his wife Kathleen in 1998, Gary is survived by his children, Wendie Parrish, and Ronald McKercher, his granddaughter Alyssa Eagleton and his son-in-law Jeff Parrish. He will be sadly missed, also, by his constant companion Haggis. A proud veteran of WWII, Gary served with the Royal Canadian Navy. He then worked for 41 years with the CNR as an engineer. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 14, in the chapel of First Memorial Funeral Services, 27555-31st Ave, Aldergrove, B.C. Rev. Ken Dean will officiate. McLAUGHLIN, Arthur William (Bill) - age 94 and a Veteran (Navy) of the Second World War, died peacefully at home in Braeshore, Pictou Co., on Sunday, September 6, 2015, surrounded by family. Born April 5, 1921 in Pictou, he was a son of the late Joseph and Mary Ethel (Gray) McLaughlin. Bill will be greatly missed by his wife of 64 years, Mary (Savela) and children, Joanne, Gary (Cynthia Hooper), Brian (Maureen Fraser) and Andrew; grandchildren, Craig (Candace Sears), Steven and Grace; numerous nieces and nephews. NAULT, Ellwood Keith - (14 Nov 1927 - 11 Feb 2016) Ellwood passed away peacefully in his sleep 5:00 p.m. Thursday, February 11, 2016 at the age of 88. Ellwood was born in the little town of Dacotah, Manitoba, November 14, 1927. He was a loving husband, proud father, grandfather, and even prouder great grandfather. He is survived by his son Bradley (Shallee), grandson Kevin (Laura), great grandson Elias, great granddaughter Maelyn, great granddaughter Alexandra (mother Boon), and special friend Irene Fowler. He was predeceased by his wife Aldis and son Calvin. Ellwood will be deeply missed by family and friends. NEDDOW, Robert Burke (August 12, 1924 April 17, 2011) - The death of Robert Burke Neddow, of Saskatoon, occurred on April 17, 2011. Robert is survived by his three daughters, Lorraine McAulay of Saskatoon, Cheryl (Jim) Holmes of Calgary and Theresa (Lorne) Walker of Saskatoon, six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his loving wife of 58 years, Irma, four brothers, five sisters and one great grandson, Brendan. Robert, and his family, were very proud of his service in the RCNVR during World War II. His career with the oil refineries began at the small Hi-way Refinery on 11th Street in Saskatoon. When small refineries were being shut down he was transferred to Edmonton to work in the newer, bigger facilities. This spanned a period of more than 3 decades. He was involved with his children's sports as they grew up. He coached girls' softball teams and was always available to coach them in their bowling and to enter tournaments with them, with fairly good success. He was also very active in both five and ten pin bowling and golf for many years. After his retirement and the subsequent return to Saskatoon, much time was spent having coffee twice a week with his other retired buddies and travelling. NEHRING, Wesley E. (25 Jan 1935 - 10 Jul 2015) - son of the late Ralph (1989) and Elizabeth (Schlitt) (2008), passed away peacefully on July 10 at the Royal Jubilee. He was strong, showing courage and dignity. He was also predeceased by brother Wilfred (2002). Wes is survived by his wife Sharon (Sammi) Watson, brother David, sister Olive, children Janice, Mitchell and Elaine (Almeida), three step children as well as several nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Wes joined the Canadian Navy in 1953 and retired from the Pacific Fleet Diving Unit (Petty Officer 1st Class) in 1977, after which he pursued commercial diving and fishing. The family wishes to thank First Memorial Funeral Services and the staff at the Royal Jubilee Hospital for their professional and compassionate support. By request, there will be no memorial service. ORCHARD, Kenneth John (20 May 1927 - 21 Jul 2015) - 88, of Halifax, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 21, 2015 at the Veteran’s Memorial Hospital with family at his side. Born in Niagara Falls, Ontario, he was the son of the late Gilbert and Edith (Potter) Orchard. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy at the age of 17, served in the Korean War from 1952-1953 and retired after 25 years with the rank of Master Warrant Officer. After the navy, he was employed with Oland’s Brewery for 19 years and retired at the age of 61. He is survived by his wife, Bertha (Martell) of 65 years; son, Derrick (Faithe); granddaughter, Brittany (Emmett); sister, Pam; son-in-law, Paul (Ellen). Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter, Darlene; brother-in-law, Rod. Ken was a great handy-man, gardener and huge Halifax Moosehead’s fan. His constant smile and kind nature made him a wonderful father/grandfather and devoted husband; he will be missed by many. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held 2-4, 7-9 pm Monday, July 27 at Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd, from where a funeral service will take place 10 am Tuesday, July 28, 2015, with reception to follow. PENTNEY, A. Richard, Petty Officer Motor Mechanic, V46456, RCNVR (05 Sep 1921-08 Jun 2015) - Richard passed away peacefully in Oliver, B.C., on Monday, June 8, 2015 at the age of 93. Predeceased by his wife Frieda in 2001; lovingly remembered by sons, Alan (Tara) of Calgary, Alberta; Bruce (Barbara) of Brandon, Manitoba and Ross (Cindy) of Barrhead, Alberta; grandchildren, Julie (Paul) and Richard (Jacquie) of Brandon; Alana (Richard) of Toronto and Jon (Natalie) of Calgary; great-grandchildren, Paige, Dannnah, Cade, Madeleine, Cohen and Mayson. Predeceased by 4 brothers and 3 sisters. Richard was raised in the Lake of the Woods region in Ontario and following his service as a Chief Petty officer in the Canadian Navy he brought his bride Frieda from Oliver back to the Lake where they ran a commercial fishery, a tourist resort and happily raised a family. He attended Queen's University and went on to become a tax assessor for the Ontario Government and then eventually retired to Oliver where he enjoyed many cribbage games with his friends. He volunteered as an income tax preparer and was a member of the Kiwanis and was a President of the Royal Canadian Legion, Fort Frances, Ontario. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, June 13th, 2015 at 10 o'clock from St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 412 Skagit Avenue, Oliver, BC.

PIGEON, Maurice - passed away suddenly in Kingston, Ont. on January 28, 2015 at the age of 70 years. He leaves behind to mourn him, his beloved Margot. Loving step-father to Susan (William) Fleur and step-grandad to Aiden. He will be sadly missed by his sisters Yolande Bedard and Liliane Addario. Also brother-in-law Frank Pisani. Predeceased by his parents and his dear sister Marguerite Pisani (Frank), brothers-in-law Norman Bedard (2008) & Angelo Addario (2014). Also two stepsons Geoffrey (2007) and Andrew (2009). Born and raised in Welland, son of the late Joseph & Alice Pigeon, he enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces after graduating from Western University in London. He chose to serve in the Naval Air Operations and attained the rank of Lt. Colonel. He served the last several years of his career in the Dept. of National Defense in Ottawa. He served his country well. Maurice was a man of great spirit and enjoyed life to the fullest. He will be mourned by all who knew and loved him. There will be no visitation or funeral at this time. A celebration of his life will take place in Welland at a later date. If desired, as an expression of sympathy, a donation can be made at the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

PLESTER, Alan Ivan James (02 Nov 1922 - 29 Feb 1996) - Passed away peacefully at the Hamilton General Hospital on Thursday, February 29, 1996, Alan Plester, beloved husband of Thelma (nee St. John). PRINGLE, Gilbert John, MWO (27 Oct 1927 - 22 Nov 2015) - 88, of Dartmouth, passed away in St. Vincent’s Nursing Home on Sunday, November 22, 2015 surrounded by his family. Born in Williamsburg, New Brunswick he was a son of the late Raymond and Lila (MacKay). Gilbert was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces from 1947-1977 serving on the Magnificent and the Bonaventure. After retiring from the Navy, Gil worked in the Halifax Dockyard as a sail maker. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for over 50 years. Gil loved the outdoors; he was a Master Guide in the province of New Brunswick. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and working with his hands. Gil is survived by his wife of 50 years, Margaret (Smith); son, Wesley (Barbara), Oxford; daughter, Judy Porter (Phil), Dartmouth; granddaughters, Amy Anderson-Pringle, Amherst, Rebecca Pringle, Edmonton and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Ernie, Junior and sister Beth Hossack. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9pm on Thursday, November 26 with a memorial service 1pm Friday, November 27 followed by a reception all in Atlantic Funeral Homes, 771 Main Street Dartmouth. REDDEN, Louis Paul - born on September 13, 1925 in Port Williams, passed away in the Veteran’s Unit of Soldiers Memorial Hospital on April 11, 2015. He was a son of the late Bernard and Ellen (Jackson) Redden formerly of Middleton. Louis was a veteran of the Second World War and served in the Royal Canadian Navy on several ships and bases in Canada and overseas. He made three trips with convoys to northern Russia and was subsequently awarded a commendation for his service. He later joined the RCAF and retired after 20 years of service. He is survived by his wife of 68 years the former Isabelle Allen, Middleton; daughter Linda (Patrick) Henry, Mosher’s Corner; son John (Susan) Redden, Pickering, Ontario; five grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren and brother, Walter Redden, Tantallon. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Charles and John. There will be no visitation by request. REESOR, Franklin James - 88, a long-time resident of both Pembroke, Hants County and Dartmouth, NS, died on August 16, 2015 in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, NS. Born in Walsh, Alberta on May 1, 1927, he was a son of the late Frank and Elena Hazel (Stoddart) Reesor. His mother was born in Springfield, NS, and Frank had many relatives in both Nova Scotia and Alberta. Frank was raised on a cattle ranch, served 25 years in the Canadian Navy (CNAG), then taught junior high school for 17 years in Dartmouth. He was involved in many community organizations including Home & School, Red Cross, Lifesaving Society, Cancer Society, CNAG and Dartmouth General Hospital Guild. Frank is survived by son Ian (Heather), Clarence NS; daughters Susan (Ron) Trueman, Pointe de Butte, NB, and Sandra, Pembroke; foster daughter Susan Randall, Dartmouth; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. REMY, James Philip - It is with great sadness we announce the loss of one so dear, James Philip Remy "Remy" was born on January 24, 1934 in Parry Sound, Ont., to Philip and Lillian (Bourdignin) Remy. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Barbara (Weatherbee); his cherished daughter, Christina Remy-DeWolfe; grandson, Kevin "James" Remy-DeWolfe, whom he loved most dearly and was so proud of; son-in-law, Kevin DeWolfe, whom he considered to be his son; sister, Ollie Nash , Elliot Lake, Ont.; and brother, Thomas Remy, Meaford, Ont. He was predeceased by his sisters, Betty Wood, Parry Sound and Dorothy Shepherd (John), Kincardine, Ont. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews as well as his extended Cape Breton family. Jim served in the RCN from 1952-1962 and worked with the Department of National Defense, HMC Dockyard from 1968 until his retirement in 1996. Jim loved the outdoors, whether working in his garage, around the house or spending time with his "buds" and family fishing, hunting and ATV-ing. He enjoyed hiking, biking, skiing, spending weekly trips to Northeastern U.S.A. every winter. He loved to travel and his yearly trips to Ontario, the U.S.A., Caribbean, Bermuda with best buds, Marlowe and Diane and great friends always resulted in so much fun and laughter. Jim was a member of the Purcell’s Cove Club for many years and always enjoyed the stores, pool and good friendship. A true family man who adored his family which gave him so much joy and happiness and said "This is why the battle was worth it". An extremely active person who lived life to the fullest, smiled always and supported everyone. He will always be remembered for his gentle spirit, sense of humor and his strength of character in the face of adversity. A humble loving man who was always giving of himself. A special thanks to his bud "Gabe" for all his support and many visits. You were always there for him. REYNOLDS, David Edward, age 54 of Musquodoboit Harbour. Born on December 15, 1961 in Hamilton, Ontario he was a son of the late Jack and Ann (Leonard) Reynolds of Dundas, Ontario. It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of David on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at the VG Hospital, QE II after a lengthy and courageous battle with bladder cancer. David is survived by his wife, Jeanette; son, Matthew and sister, Karen. David was a natural leader and an active volunteer who served his country for 30 years as part of the Royal Canadian Navy. He spent over 20 years in fire departments along the Eastern Shore as a volunteer fire fighter, Medical first responder and Fire Chief. David was a family man, great father and enjoyed every minute he spent with his son and side-kick Matthew. David was most passionate about three things, being on the water, his love of dogs and his second career as an Engine Repair Technician. He was also the co-founder of Greyhound Pets of Atlantic Canada, placing more than 4200 dogs in homes over 24 years and more recently his involvement with Spanish Galgos and Podencos Rescue Atlantic, alongside his wife Jeanette. Sincere thank you to our family and friends for all your support and prayers. We also like to thank 7th floor palliative care team of the QEII VG site for their amazing care for David over the last 15 months. Cremation has taken place. RICHARDSON, Douglas Lyle, King George Medal, 1939-45 Star, France and Germany Star, Italy Star, Canadian Volunteer Medal - loving companion of Margaret Davidson of Lethbridge, passed away at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Thursday, April 10, 2008 at the age of 83 years. Douglas will be sadly missed by his children Nancy Dann of London, ON and Michael (Alison) Richardson of Calgary and grandchildren Ilija Labus, Elizabeth Margaret Dann, Connor James and Casey Heather Richardson. He was predeceased by his children's mother Barbara Elizabeth Richardson. Douglas was born on July 29, 1924 in Hamilton, ON. Douglas served in the Canadian Navy as a radio operator. He graduated from McMaster University in 1949 with a Bachelor of Arts and Science. He was in the financial industry for over 40 years. The love of his life was sailing and golfing. He will be fondly remembered by his sense of humour and his bright blue eyes. Douglas was a man that was loved by all. ROBARTS, John Parmenter (11 Jan 1917, Banff, AB - 18 Oct 1982, Toronto, ON) - John joined the RCNVR in 1940 as an Ordinary Seaman. He was appointed to HMS Raleigh in 1940, and gained his commission. He served with the Royal navy at the amphibious landings at Salerno, Italy, and later served in HMCS Uganda. Demobilized in 1945, he returned to civilian life. He graduated from law school in 1948. In 1951 he became a Member of Parliament for London, North, ON, and later, the Premier of Ontario.

ROBESON, Hugh Ross - 91, Truro, died November 13, 2015, at home in Truro with family. Born in Merigomish, he was a son of the late Hugh Ross and Elizabeth Jane (Parker) Robeson. He served with the RCNVR (HMCS NIOBE) and RN (HMS Norfolk and HMS Duke of York) on North Atlantic Convoy duty during the Second World War, retired from Department of National Defence. He loved live theatre. SCOVILLE, William Clifton - It is with broken hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of William ('Bill', 'Billy' or 'Willy') Clifton Scoville of Hubbards on February 18, 2016, at the age of 77. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; son, Peter; daughter, Susan; granddaughters, Carrie and Meri; grandson, Taggart, and sisters, Annabelle, Carol Ann, and Patsy. He was predeceased by his father; mother; a sister and two brothers. Bill was born in Yarmouth into a lobster fishing family but chose his own career path when he joined the RCN as a stoker in 1957, retiring in 1989 at the rank of CPO2. After retiring from the navy, he worked for Mardo Construction, utilizing his hands-on mechanical knowledge on numerous construction projects. He was always happiest when working with his hands. Bill especially enjoyed his time spent with friends, ducking, deer hunting, and fishing for the elusive big one. Bill was full of life, and loved teasing anyone who crossed his path. He will be sorely missed by all his family and friends. As per Bill's wishes, there will be no visitation or service and, at a later date, his ashes will be returned to the sea he loved. SHELLNUTT, Ernest George (Ernie), CPO1 VA, RCN - Age 94, of Halifax and Dartmouth, passed away peacefully 11 April 2015, at Camp Hill Veterans Residence, a few hours after his younger sister Eulah Martin (Roy) passed at the Infirmary. Born in Halifax on 4 August 1920, he was a son of the late Roy and Merdina (Drysdale) Shellnutt. He grew up on South Kline St. In his youth, he was active in Wolf Cubs, Boy Scouts, and delivered the Halifax Mail newspaper and Liberty magazine. He was a member of The Band of Hope, a member of St Mathias Church, and a graduate of Bloomfield High School. After leaving school, he worked in the stockroom of the T. Eaton Company for a year while waiting for his acceptance in the RCN as a Victualing Assistant, which occurred on 13 July 1939. He was drafted to HMCS Saguenay a few days before Canada entered the war, and sailed on her during the first year of the war. He served at sea on HMCS St Croix for the second and third years of the war. From June 42 to December 44 he served ashore at HMCS Protector, Sydney; detached at times to Mulgrave, Louisbourg, and Point Edward for ship examination duties and the victualing of the slow convoy escorts. He met the love of his life, Peggy MacLellan, in Sydney. They married at St. George’s Chapel, HMCS King’s, Halifax, 30 August 1944; the same day he got word of his promotion to CPO. He spent the last few months of the war in the Central Victualing Depot, Halifax. After the war, he served at sea on HMCS Magnificent for three different drafts, and ashore at HMCS Stadacona, Cornwallis, and Shearwater. In 1955 he moved the family across the harbour to Westphal, now a part of Dartmouth. He was active during the 1956-57 period fund-raising for the construction of the current St Luke`s Anglican Church overlooking Tacoma Drive. He retired from the navy in 1961. He worked in wholesale for two years at Amherst Frozen Foods, Woodside. He then worked ten years, at HMCS Shearwater in the supply department before retiring permanently in 1973. In retirement, he was active in the Admiral Westphal New Horizon’s Group; enjoying ceramics and bridge. He enjoyed many bus trips with Peggy to the US as well as two escorted tours of Europe. He was a lifetime member of the Atlantic Chiefs and Petty Officers Association. He cherished seeing his children and grandchildren spend their summers at the family camp at Mill Cove, Lunenburg County where they spent carefree summers on Fox Point Beach, becoming great swimmers and to some extent free spirits. He and Peggy loved touring the backroads of Nova Scotia, particularly Lunenburg County.. He was proud of his children's’ achievements and especially proud of the education levels and successes achieved by his grandchildren. He wasn’t afraid to lift a hammer to help build numerous cottages, homes, garages, decks; as well as helping out with roofing, window and siding replacements for family members and friends. He took up golf in his 60s playing with his sons and sons-in-law, as a member of the Chester Golf Club. He was always generous to those who asked for help. Ernie is survived by sons Wayne (Ingrid) and James “Jim” (Sheila) and daughter Brenda (Tom Henneberry) Haight; sons-in-law, Charles Dixon and Stewart Garrison; daughter-in-law Janet Shellnutt; granddaughter-in –law Melanie Garrison; brother-in-law Roy Martin; sisters in law Pauline Shellnutt and Phyllis Shellnutt. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and three step-great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Peggy, his daughters Barbara Dixon and Nancy Garrison; his sons William “Bill” (Joan) and Philip, grandson Brent Garrison; his sisters Reta (Hall) Cormier (Ray), Eulah Martin; his brothers Roy, Douglas (in infancy), and Graham. Visitation will be held from 7-9 pm on Wednesday April 15 in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth. Funeral service will take place at 11 am on Thursday April 16 in St Luke’s Anglican Church, 9 Veterans Avenue, Dartmouth, Rev, Matthew Sponagle officiating. SKEFFINGTON, William Bemister, RCN, Korean War Veteran - age 82 years of Dartmouth, passed away peacefully at the QEII, Camp Hill on August 23, 2015. Born in St. John’s, Newfoundland on September 27, 1932; he was a son of the late Reginald Skeffington and Gertrude Small. Lorne passed away peacefully, surrounded by his wife and children, on December 4th 2014. Lorne is survived by his wife Linda, his children Claudine and Kelly (Samantha) his brothers Michael, Richard, Christopher, Tony and his sister Allisen, brother-in-law Lance (Marian), sister-in-law Joanne, grandchildren Christian Anastasia, Tianna and Alyssa, nieces and nephews and many friends. He is predeceased by his parents and his brother George and sister Sharon. Lorne is a decorated 30 year navy veteran. He spent many years working for the Red Cross and continued to service the local community by delivering newspapers, in Maple Ridge, for the past 10 years. SPENCE, Kenneth - passed away after a brief illness at Victoria General Hospital on 22 July 2015 at the age of 84 surrounded by his family. He was predeceased by his parents Harmon and Mary Spence and all 10 of his siblings. Ken is survived by Jewel (nee Canning), the love of his life. Ken is lovingly remembered by his children: Teresa of Windsor, Nova Scotia, Joanne (Bernie) of Torbrook, Nova Scotia; his grandchildren Elizabeth, Jennifer (John Luke), Andrew (Michelle), Matthew (Angela), and Luke (Laura); as well his great grandchildren Micaela, Lexie, Chloe, Patrick, Claire, Kalen and Resa; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ken was born in Springhill, Nova Scotia on 26 April 1931 and graduated from Springhill High School. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1949 and served in many parts of the world and was a veteran of the Korean War. Ken left the Navy as a Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class in 1967 and joined the Computer Services department at Dalhousie University working his way up to manager of the university printing department a position he held until his retirement in 1994. Ken enjoyed many past times and for 40 years was involved in round and square dancing. More recently he loved to spend time on the Amherst Shore with Jewel and his family at their cottage and going for long walks on the beach. Ken possessed an extraordinary sense of humour and was well known for his joke telling and pranks he would love to play on those he cared about. A side not well known by many was his ability to cook and many a large gathering had his and Jewel's handiwork on display for all guests to enjoy. The will be no visitation but a funeral service will be held at Birch Cove Baptist Church, 50 Donaldson Ave, Halifax on Saturday 25 July 2015 starting at 11 a.m. with Rev John Wilton officiating. SPENCER, Edgar Lawrence (Ed), Leading Supply Assistant, RCNVR - age 94 of Halifax, passed away on March 26, 2015. It is with deepest sorrow and sadness that I announce the loss of my dear husband and best friend, Edgar. Born in Kentville NS, Sept. 6, 1920, Edgar was the only child of Lawrence Edgar and Emma Sophia (Corbin) Spencer. He graduated from Kings County Academy in 1937 at the age of 17 and lived with his Aunt Cecelia (Corbin) O'Hara in Halifax until he found permanent employment. He was a veteran of the Second World War, having joined the Navy in 1940 and served until 1945. Later he became a partner in a printing business (Halcraft Printing) with the late Leo Arkelian for the next 23 years. Edgar partook in many sports including hunting and fishing which he enjoyed dearly. (He was also a member of a number of bowling leagues over the years.) A member of the Royal Canadian Legion (Branch #162) in Lower Sackville for many years, Edgar spent many enjoyable times there. He traveled widely, including volunteering for three months in Lagos, Nigeria (with CESO) and related many interesting stories. He is survived by his wife, Anne B. (Currie); his only son, Lawrence Richard (Moira), Fall River; two grandchildren, Brad (Joanne) Spencer, Hammonds Plains; Dr. Lesley (Rohit) Spencer, Ottawa and three stepsons, Joseph (Joan) Currie, Second Peninsula; John (Carolyn) Currie, Middleton; and Peter (Pauline) Currie, Dartmouth; two great grandchildren, Robin Spencer (14 months) and Navin Saxena (21 months). Besides his parents, Edgar was predeceased by his first wife, Edna Pearl (Whitford). Cremation has taken place. SPIDLE, Harold Edward - age 91 of Marriotts Cove, passed away peacefully at home, with his family by his side, on March 15, 2015. Born in Mahone Bay, he was a son of the late Roy and Joy (Hyson) Spidle. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving on the HMCS Grandmere Minesweeper patrolling the North Atlantic on 'The Triangle Run'. He was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. No 49, Mahone Bay and then Everett Br. No 88, Chester Basin. Harold was a wood yard supervisor at Canxel, East River before retiring. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who always put his family first. He was an avid woodsman, who loved cutting logs and firewood on his land for his own use and to sell. He loved spending time at his camp with his family where he would al­ways find things to do to keep him busy. He will be dearly missed by his wife, Joy (Lantz); his daughter, Angela (David) Jessome and his grandchildren, Daniel and Amanda who were his pride and joy. TAYLOR, James Edward - Age 79, Dartmouth, and formerly of Meaghers Grant, passed away October 2, 2015, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Simcoe, Ont., he was a son of the late Sydney and Edna (Forse) Taylor. Jim was an aviation mechanic with the Navy for many years. He was a long-standing member of the Grand Lodge of A.F.A.M. of Nova Scotia and the Grand High Priest of the Royal Arch Masons of Nova Scotia. Surviving are his wife, the former Geraldine Dooks MacFarlane; children, Scott (Anne Louise), Robin (Kim), Janice (Mike); grandchildren, Matthew, Sarah, Isaac, Seth, Lindsey; great-granddaughter, Sadie; stepchildren, Kevin (Helen), Stephen (Kathy), Marilyn (Claude); six step grandchildren; one step great-grandson; one step great-granddaughter; sister, Sheila; brothers, John (Lynda), Don (Nancy). He was predeceased by brother-in-law, Roy Gibbons; sister-in-law, Sandy Taylor. Cremation has taken place. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time, but will be published in Monday's paper. TEMPELAARS, Bertus (Ben) - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bertus 'Ben' Tempelaars of Halifax. Ben passed away at the age of 83 after a brief illness on August 2, 2015, with Annie and family by his side. Born in Amsterdam, Holland, in 1932, Ben met his wife, Annie Vlasman at five years of age and spent his entire life with her, after dating all through school. Ben lived through the Second World War in his teens and after joining the Dutch Military, he was given special permission by Queen Beatrice of the Netherlands to join the Canadian Forces. Ben and Annie married by proxy through the telephone with Ben's brother standing in for him, as he had already immigrated to Canada, and they were married for more than 61 years. He arrived through Pier 21, and lived with Annie in Nova Scotia and British Columbia most of their lives while raising four children. Ben became a Canadian citizen and was a veteran of the Korean War. After joining the Royal Canadian Artillery Band, he was later posted to the Stadacona Band, commissioned and returned as the Stadacona Band's Director of Music and Commanding Officer. In 1983, Ben returned to the CF School of Music in Esquimalt, B.C. and was promoted to Lt. Cdr., and appointed its Commandant the following year. In 1988, he retired from the Canadian Forces after more than 35 years of service. He took the position of Staff Officer of the Naval Reserve Band, and became the Director of Music of the popular National Band of the Naval Reserves, playing in the Nova Scotia International Tattoo for 11 years. He took pride in being a very good trumpet player with an excellent ear. Ben was proud of his outstanding military career, the life he lived with Annie, and the family that they raised together. Ben and Annie travelled extensively, especially in their retirement years. In his own words, he had a good life and lots of fun. Ben is survived by his beloved wife, Annie; son, Danny (Carolyn); daughters, Joyce (Colin Campbell), Sandy (Len Wagg); and Monique; as well as grandchildren, Adam (Cheryl) Tempelaars and Paula (Kevin Twohig), Rowan and Quinn Campbell, Brett (Yailen Munoz-Diaz), Kiya (Alex Willman) and Jodi Wagg; and Nicole (Ian Fleming) and Michael Benjamin Dalrymple; as well as great-grandchildren, Jordyn and Trooper Bertus Tempelaars. He was predeceased by his parents, Bertha (Burke) and Johannes Tempelaars; only brother, Joop, and granddaughter, Diana. At Ben's request, there will be no visitation or funeral. Cremation has taken place and a private family interment will follow. Ben's family would like to thank the staff of 8.4 at the Halifax Infirmary, QEII, for their compassionate care in his final days. THOMPSON, James A. – It is with sadness, but great appreciation for a life well lived, that the family of James Archibald Thompson Senior announce his passing on Friday, September 25, 2015 at home at the age of 94. Jim was born in Halifax on August 6, 1921, the son of William and Annie (Perry) Thompson. At the age of 16 he join Office Speciality in the shipping department. Jim left the company during World War 2 to serve his country in the navy. He later returned to the company as a salesman following the war. In 1951he became manager of the Halifax branch, and by 1962 was made Regional Manager for the Atlantic Region. In 1982 he purchased the Halifax branch, and later founded Thompson’s Office Products and Systems Limited. Throughout his tenure he served as President of the Halifax Executive Association and the Halifax Rotary Club and sat on the board for Scouts Canada. He is survived by his daughter Wendy (nee Thompson) Wagner; son, James (Barb) Thompson Junior; four grandchildren, Michelle (Jamie) Kavanaugh, Jeffery (Katherine) Wagner, Kimberly (Chris) Thompson, Amanda (Chris) Thompson; and one great grandchild, Callen Kavanaugh; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Jim was predeceased by his loving wife Irene (Burgwin) of 63 years; son-in-law, Phillip Wagner; sisters, Ruby and Margaret “Teenie”; and brothers, Jarvis (Ruth), Ronald (Elsie), Billy and Cecil. A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, September 30, at 2pm at Atlantic Funeral Home (Dartmouth Chapel) 771 Main Street, Dartmouth. Reverend James Haughn officiating. THOMSON, William G. (Bill) (17 Dec 1933 - 17 Feb 2016) - We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Bill (Aka Windy) Thomson. Bill was born to Thomas (Mac) and Mary (Snyder) Thomson in Deepdale Manitoba and passed away in Victoria General Hospital, after a very short illness with his wife Norene and daughter Vicki holding his hands. Every member of his family visited on that last day, each having a chance to say goodbye and to tell him they loved him. He was alert enough to acknowledge that and indicate his love of them. Bill spent twenty four years in the navy, the last twelve as a submariner proudly serving on H.M.C.S Grilse and H.M.C.S Rainbow. Bill and Norene were married at Centennial United Church on April 3,1958 having met in 1954, while Norene was a student nurse at Royal Jubilee Hospital. They were blessed with four children, twins, Bonnie (Derek Emery) and Barbara (Ray Bronson), Brian and Vicki (Trent Andres) all of whom survive him. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Aaron (Meagan), Kim (Nate) and Kyle (Calee) Emery, Nikki (Luc Fournier) Bronson, Amy (Christopher) Gould, Kelly (Heather Brown) Bronson, Kristina and Alyssa Andres and Jordan Thomson. He also leaves great -grandkids Kierra and Maiya Fournier and Alyxandra and Rylan Gould. Bill is predeceased by his brother Jack Orr and sister Viola Winters. He leaves two sisters, Esther Phillips and Doreen (Glen) Jones in Ontario and two brothers Lloyd (Lynne) and Ken (Valerie) Orr in Manitoba. A celebration of life service will be held at Centennial United Church on Gorge Road East at David Street, on Wednesday February 24th at 11a.m., with a reception to follow in the church hall. VENNE, L. Joseph (Joe), LS, C.A.F. (1962-2015) - passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at the Moncton Hospital. Joe was predeceased by his mom Edna (Allen) Knox. He will be sadly missed by five siblings: Pat of Moncton, NB, Roger of Oakville, ON, Jeff, Sandra, Sharon Darlene (Marcel) all of Edmonton, AB, as well as five nieces; Julie, Sara, Rachel, Ashlee, Stephony, two nephews, Dontaé and Del, two grand-nieces, Marlowe and Kennedy, two grand-nephews Sawyer and Foster. Joe is also survived by his step-father Sandy Knox. VERRAN, Harry James - It is with sadness, the family of Harry James Verran, of Meadowvale, Annapolis Co. announces his passing on Sunday, October 18, 2015 at age 85. Harry was born on July 6, 1930 in Placentia Nfld. to the late Josephine (Byrne) and James Verran. Harry was devoted to his loving wife Connie of 61 years and family who were the pride and joy of his life. He Joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1949 and served proudly for twenty years. As a photographer he served on the HMCS Bonaventure and the HMCS Magnificent. During his military career, Harry became one of the premiere long distance runners in the Atlantic region. He participated in the Boston Marathon twice finishing as the third top Canadian in thirty-second place overall in 1955. His trophy case was lined with reminders of this successful career. He retired in 1969 to Bridgetown in the beautiful Annapolis Valley where he established Western Valley Photo Studios, which he operated successfully for many years. With his good friend and fellow runner, Bobby Lockett, he was a common sight on the highways and byways of the Annapolis Valley roads. It was during this time he became involved in youth sport and was instrumental in the building of the Bridgetown Arena as well as coaching and organizing minor hockey, minor lacrosse and youth track and field (with good friend Dick Campbell). During the 1970’s Harry also established and helped coach a senior hockey team, the Bridgetown Hawks, of the Nova Scotia Senior Hockey League. In 2013 Harry was proud to be inducted into the Bridgetown Sports Hall of Fame with a Life Time Achievement award for his many years of service as an athlete, a coach and a builder. In the early1970’s he began his political career by accepting a position as Executive Assistant to the provincial Minister of Finance (Peter Nicholson). He then became a field worker and organizer for the Nova Scotia Liberal Party. In 1993 Harry successfully ran a campaign to become the Member of Parliament for Southwest Nova. He worked tirelessly for the people of western Nova Scotia until 1997. Upon officially leaving political life, he continued to enjoy meeting and talking to people about current issues and spent precious time with his family which includes seven married children, twenty-seven grandchildren and twenty-nine great grandchildren. Over the last few years he and Connie have been a regular fixture at the Windsor Arena for all junior “B” games, to watch their star player and grandson Colin Gillis perform. Family was always the most important thing in Harry’s life and he was most happy and proud when he was in the company of his “little ones” who affectionately called him Poppy. He was predeceased by his infant brother Leo; infant grandson Bruce Harry (John and Debbie) and son-in-law Mark MacFarlane (Margie). He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Connie. WALKER, Gerald Barry - passed away on April 4, 2015, in Bayside, N.B. He was born in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Saint John, N.B. on July 19, 1963. He was the second child of Douglas Walker and Sherrill Pineau Walker Killam. Barry is survived by his children, Andrew and Danielle Walker; his father, Doug Walker; stepfather, Brian Killam; and his siblings, Brian (German Esparza), Ann (Janet Toner) and John (Lisa) Walker, and uncle to Julia and Lucas Walker; aunts and uncles, cousins and friends. After graduating from high school at Millidgeville North in 1981, Barry joined the Canadian Navy and moved to Halifax, where he met and married Cheryl Ann Wicks. Barry served as a Petty Officer 2nd Class in the Canadian Navy from 1981 to 2006 and received decorations for his service in the Gulf and Kuwait. He also served as a member of the Fleet Diving Unit and worked as an instructor at the Naval Damage Control Training Facility in Purcell’s Cove. Upon retiring from the Canadian Navy he moved to Saint Andrews, N.B. and worked at Saint Andrews Biological Station. Barry was a dedicated employee. Barry was an avid sailor and had much, much joy from being on the water and sharing time on his boats with the people he loved. He loved to hike, bike, ski and walk outdoors and to spend time with his family members. Barry was wonderful at visiting and always came with a gift usually in the form of the sweets that he loved so much! He spent much of his personal time being of service to others. He frequently gave away his possessions to people in need. Barry was very proud to donate to and work with the Mount Traber Bible Camp in Nova Scotia. God was very important in Barry’s life. He was a member of the Family Worship Center in St. George, N.B. and he was much loved by this community. Barry was predeceased by his mother, Julia Sherrill Killam, and his maternal and paternal grandparents. Special thanks to his friends Brian and Lana Gould, Lori and Doug Noddin and Harvey Millar for all of their support. A gathering in Barry ’s honour will take place on Saturday, April 11, in Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Rd. (632-7424) from 1-5 p.m with visiting and a memorial service. WARD, Richard Albert - Age 92, of Halifax, passed away November 11, 2015, at home with loving family. Born in Winnipeg, Man., he was a son of the late Arch and Lillian (Brazier) Ward. After serving in the Royal Canadian Navy on the SS Wentworth during the Second World War, he graduated from Mechanical Engineering at McGill University in 1947 and married Joyce (MacArthur) from Pictou on May 17, 1947 in Montreal, Que. Survived by sons, Richard E. of Toronto, Ont.; Charles J.M. of Lethbridge, Alta.; and daughter, B. Joanne (Ward) Bouchard of Halifax; nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his first wife, Joyce (MacArthur) and second wife, Phyllis (O'Connor); sisters, May Ball of Thunder Bay, Ont.; Joyce Coldwell of Selkirk, Man. He will be deeply missed and his great zest for life and eternal joie de vivre will always be celebrated by his family and many friends. Cremation has taken place. WEATHERBY, David Leon - age 92, Dartmouth, passed away peacefully Tuesday November 17, 2015 in the Camp Hill Veteran’s Memorial Hospital. Born in Truro on May 15, 1923, he was the son of the late Clarence Weatherby and Dorothy (Kaulback). David was a Veteran of World War II, serving three years in the Navy. After the Navy David worked for Canada Post for 27 years before retirement. Dave enjoyed bowling and started an “over 90” bowling league. He liked to play cards and was an avid crossword fan. Dave is survived by sons Dennis (Linda), Albert Bridge, Brian (Shelley), Dartmouth and Derrick (Melvina), Lake Echo. Daughter-in-law Pat, 4 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild also survive him, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his loving wife of 54 years, Eileen, son Ronald and Sister Sophie. Visitation will be held on Thursday Nov 19, 2015 from 2-4, 7-9 pm and a Funeral Service will be held on Friday Nov 20, 2015 at 10 am all to be held at Atlantic Funeral Homes, 771 Main Street Dartmouth. WHALEN, Kenneth Victor - age 65, Fall River, passed away peacefully surrounded by family in his home on November 5th 2015. Born in Toronto, Ken joined the Navy where he worked as a marine engineer and met his wife Susan, together they raised their family in Lower Sackville where they made many lifelong friends and memories. In his later years Ken and Sue moved to Fall River, where Ken enjoyed the outdoors, sitting by the bonfire and making woodland trails. Ken was an avid car enthusiast, everything from drag and stock car racing, to car clubs. He will be remembered for his love of music, music was in his soul, from jamming in the basement to performing in clubs and legions in his earlier years. Predeceased by his parents, Donald and Sonia (Keyko) Whalen of Toronto. He was a devoted husband, a proud father, loving grandfather, brother and uncle. Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Susan (Currie); daughter, Kendra (Stephen) Oliver, Lower Sackville, and their children Victoria, Stephen, and Elizabeth; son, Dustin (Sheila), Fall River and children, Denver and Charlie; brother, Gary (Brenda), Barry's Bay, Ont.; Doug (Shirley), Port Perry, Ont.; many nieces, nephews and cousins. 'A Celebration of his Life' will take place 2 p.m., Thursday, November 12th, in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. WHITTY, Lawrence Daniel (Laurie) -92, St. Peter’s passed away on Wednesday, September 2, 2015, in the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston. Born in Greenvale, PEI, he was a son of the late Daniel and Effie (MacDonald) Whitty. Laurie was a veteran of WWII and served 25 years with the Royal Canadian Navy and 8 years with the Canadian Coast Guard. He also worked at the Canso Canal in Port Hastings. He was a member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 47 in St. Peter’s, St. Peter’s Parish in St. Peter’s and a former member of St. Peter’s Lions Club. Also, he was a long-time member of the Holy Name Society and St. Joseph’s Parish in Halifax. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Surviving are his loving wife of 66 years, Cecilia (Stone); son, Leonard (Maureen), Sampsonville; grandchildren, Serena (Marc Rapitta), Dartmouth; Linden (Amy), River Bourgeois; Holly Ann, Halifax; great-grandchildren, Crystal, Kyle, Sandra. He was predeceased by his son, Robert; brothers, John, Peter, Bernard; sisters, Florence, Alice and Margaret in infancy. WILSON, John Knox (Tug) - age 90 of Dartmouth passed away Monday 01 June 2015 in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Stony Mountain, Manitoba he was the son of the late John and Mabel (Dudwell) Wilson. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy Voluntary Reserve in 1942 and was later released in 1945 at the end of WWII. After a few years at home he reenlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1947, returned to Halifax, met his wife Helen and retired in 1969. Still a young man, he went back to school and acquired his teaching license and taught Industrial Arts at the Eastern Shore District High School and Caledonia Junior High School for eighteen years. His retirement years included landscaping and gardening at their acreage in Greenhill, playing golf at Hartlen Point and curling at the Dartmouth Curling Club into his 80’s. He was an active member and past Master (‘86) of the Masonic Woodlawn Lodge 131. John is survived by his wife of 68 years, Helen (Wright); daughter, Nancy Mosher (David), Lower Sackville; sons, Richard (Peggy), Chester and Jeffery, Borden, Ontario; grandchildren, Ben (Rachael), Matthew (Kathie), Barbie (Gary), John; great grandchildren, Olivia, Meggie, Elisabeth, Emma, Evangeline, Eli, Aurora, Donnie, Vincent; and Step grandchildren, Ben and Frannie. He was predeceased by, brothers, Ken, Bob and sister, Marjorie and daughter in law, Faye. Cremation has taken place. WOODHOUSE, William B. (Bill) - age 89 of West Lake Ainslie, passed away peacefully on March 23rd, 2015, in Inverness Hospital with family by his side. Born June 21, 1925 in Milton, Ont., he joined the Navy in 1941. He served on HMCS New Westminster (Corvette) on the North Atlantic Patrol. He also served on the ocean going tug, Alberton. He leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Charlotte (Weaver); son, William 'Bill Jr.'; daughter, Jodi Green; and granddaughter, Jamie Deavy, Ontario; grandson, TJ Lovell Alberta; several great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Helen Hashem and son, Bobby. Bill was a retired business man. Although he served with the Royal Canadian Navy he’d spent most of his working time at Eaton’s, Thompson & Sutherland and travelled on the road. He later became co-owner of Straight Supplies in Port Hawkesbury. Not one to remain in 'relax' mode a.k.a. 'retirement' Bill served as Chairman of the Board of INRICH B.D.C., and served on the Board of Community Futures as well as Lake Ainslie, Margaree - Heritage River Committee. Bill was an adviser for Junior Achievers and 4H Club taking great pride in teaching and mentoring youth. Bill was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer. A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 4th in East Lake Ainslie Presbyterian Church, Rev. Louis Ihasz officiating. A luncheon will be served in the church hall following the service. Cremation has taken place. The family wishes to thank all of the health care professionals for their compassion and care given during his last days. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Ladies Foundation of the IMCH, Inverness.

HMCS NEW WESTMINSTER

WORSLEY, Beatrice Helen, Lt, WRCNS (18 Oct 1921 - 08 May 1972) - was the first female computer scientist in Canada. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge with Alan Turing and Douglas Hartree as advisers, the first Ph.D granted in what would today be known as computer science. She wrote the first program to run on EDSAC, co-wrote the first compiler for Toronto's Manchester Mark I, wrote numerous papers in computer science, and taught computers and engineering at Queen's University and the University of Toronto for over 20 years before her  death at the age of 50.
