TAYLOR, George E. (Buck), MWO - It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of George Edward Taylor, Nov 14th, 2016. George was born in Rosthern Saskatchewan in 1925, he was the son of the late Edward and Emily (Preacher) Taylor. Leaving home to join the Navy during the 2nd World War. He loved his navy career and served on many ships too numerous to mention. He retired after 25 years of service. He also worked as a Technical Inspector with the DND, retiring after 14 years. He was a member of the Naval Association in Halifax and served as 1st vice for several years. George, in his younger years, was a very athletic man. He loved hockey, football, baseball and especially golf. He enjoyed watching his Saturday night games and going to athletic games at the Metro Centre. He took pleasure in doing crossword puzzles and cryptograms. Often people would call him for help for the right word. He loved reading especially military books. He was well known for being a sandwich artist extraordinaire. George was a chartered member of the Knights of Columbus at the St Thomas Moore Church, where he and his wife attended faithfully. Leaving behind his beloved wife Marie "Verna", their son Keray Edward (Antonella), stepchildren Cynthia Hirschfeld, Timothy Black (Nadine Deering), Tanya Risk (Paul), Nadine Pienitz (Reinhard). Cherished grandchildren Matthew, Sacha, Jasmin, Jacob, Chloe, Max and Markus. His best buddy Cody will miss their walks. Predeceased by his stepdaughter Patricia Marion and son in law Marlin Hirschfeld. George was truly at his best when surrounded by his family. He will be fondly remembered by all who knew him as a man with a kind gentle spirit, generous and captivating personality and a heart of gold. He will be dearly missed by everyone he knew. Always willing to lend a helping hand. To quote his two eldest grandchildren Matthew and Sacha "the world has lost another hero". Funeral mass will be at 11am Saturday November 26, 2016 at St. Thomas Moore, 15 Caledonia Rd, Dartmouth, NS with Father Okafor. Reception to follow in the church hall where we will be honored to have a legion tribute by Neil Landry, Padre for Fairview Legion. BRAUNSTEIN, Harry (Hershey) - The family of Harry (Hershey) Braunstein are sad to announce his peaceful passing on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at the Simkin Centre in Winnipeg, age 94. Hershey was predeceased by his siblings Reuben Braunstein of Vancouver, Sally Shinewald and Toby Kessler of Winnipeg. He is survived by nieces and nephews in Winnipeg, Vancouver and Edmonton, grandnieces and nephews, great-grandnieces and nephews, cousins, relatives and many friends. Hershey was born in Tullymet, Saskatchewan on September 17, 1922. His father passed away when he was only two years old and the Jewish Orphanage of Winnipeg became his home and his brother Reuben's home. Hershey enjoyed his years at the orphanage and became lifelong friends with those he grew up with. Hershey served in the Navy in the Second World War. After the War, Hershey's mother, sister and brothers moved to Winnipeg and they all became a family again. Hershey was always one to look for adventure. He worked all over the world, often as a waiter, in Florida, New York, California, Las Vegas and Israel. He took every opportunity in between jobs to visit those he was close to. Eventually he returned to Winnipeg, opening Hershey's Grocery at the corner of Newton and Main, and then retired to a life centred around family and friends. Hershey spent his later years at the Simkin Centre where he was friends with everybody. Funeral services for Hershey were held Monday, November 21, 2016 at the Bnay Abraham Cemetery, Winnipeg. HILLARD, George A. (Tony) (09 Sep 1925 - 05 Oct 2016) - passed away peacefully in his home at the age of 91. He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 66 years, Susan, daughters Jane and Julie, grandchildren Tony (Brooke), Gillian (Cody), Margo, 6 great-grandchildren, his brother Roger (Evelyn) and his nieces and nephews. Tony was born in Lethbridge, Alberta. He attended Royal Roads Naval College and enlisted at the age of 18 in the Royal Canadian Navy where he served 2 years at sea on HMCS Charlottetown, North Atlantic Convoy Duty, submarine striking force in WWII. After the war, Tony attended UBC and graduated in Forest Engineering. Poppa will be dearly missed by those who loved him most. (The Province 26 Nov 2016)

RILEY, Kenneth Pritchard (Ken), Ordinary Sig (09 Dec 1925 - 18 Nov 2016) - in his 91st year passed away at the Ottawa Hospital General Campus on Friday surrounded by his loving family, November 18, 2016. His dear wife Dorothy died October 2013. Ken left four children, David, Bob (Jayne), Deborah (Sandy), Peter and five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He had pride in the accomplishments of all. Ken served in the Royal Canadian Navy 1943-45 and was assigned as a Signalman in HMCS Nene Serving overseas. After the war Ken joined Canadian Westinghouse in Montreal. He was transferred to Ottawa. He left Westinghouse after seventeen years and joined the Federal government, working in several departments, Agriculture, CIDA, Supply and Services, in the financial and administrative areas. He is a graduate of Sir George Williams College (now Concordia U), a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries. Not a good golfer, gardener but tried hard. He leaves a wonderful family. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, Ottawa on Friday, December 2, 2106 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to your favorite charity would be appreciated by the family. SMYTHE, Donald Keith (27 Apr 1924 - 20 Nov 2016) - Passed peacefully at home surrounded by family at 92 years of age. Don was a true gentleman with the highest moral character who cherished family and friends beyond all – loving, giving and kind with a terrific sense of humour. In Don's words, "the old boy has been the luckiest of men all through my life with two wonderful loving wives". Don will be forever missed by his cherished wife of 28 years, Mary Pallett Smythe (nee Leuty) and late Betty Smythe (nee Rennie) beloved wife of Don for 39 years. Don and Betty had 5 loving daughters and devoted sons-in-law who he considered sons. Rennie Smythe, Jackie Stephens (Gerry), Heather Sansom (Paul), Kelly Sparfel (Ken) and Nancy Smythe (Rocco Rauseo). "Bubba" was so loved by his 8 grandchildren Kristy (Pat), Michael (Karen), Danny (Vanessa), Rennie, Mark, Brad, Hannah and Jesse. Proud Great-Bubba to Taylor, Calvin and Summer. Happiest singing songs, playing crib or casting a line at many family gatherings at Canning Lake, Caug, Florida, and Muskoka. Don won nine Canadian Badminton National Titles and represented his Country internationally. He was inducted into both The Etobicoke and Canadian Amateur Athletic Hall of Fame. "Don Smythe was one of Canada's most dynamic and personable champions". Don valued the camaraderie of his friendships at The Boulevard Club, Weston, Delray Dunes and The Toronto Golf Club as much as the sports themselves. And now Don has 'gone fishin' in higher waters. TYNE, Charles (09 May 1921 - 18 Nov 2016) - the son of John Tyne and Maisie (Masson), original homesteaders in the farming community of Altario, Alberta. After his father's passing when Chuck was 7 years of age, he and his six siblings helped his mother on the farm during the 1930's. When WWII broke out, Chuck enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy and served on board HMCS Edmundston K106 with duties in the Pacific and Atlantic. Chuck met his wife Helen Doris Macleod, a WREN stationed in Prince Rupert, where they had two children before moving to Calgary. Their time in Calgary brought another son and many adventures with numerous foster babies, as well as raising horses on their acreages in the Saddle Ridge and Delacour areas. In the 1980's Chuck and Helen moved to the North Shuswap area where Chuck built houses until he was well into his 70's. After Helen's passing in 1998, Chuck moved to Armstrong for several years and then finally to Kelowna. During that time, Chuck travelled the world extensively and had many albums full of memories of trips to such places as China and Mongolia, the Netherlands, Antarctica, Turkey, parts of South America and the Philippines. His favourite trips were to Australia where, in his 80's he climbed to the top of Ayres Rock. He is survived by his daughter Susan (Mark) Richardson, sons Randy (Debbie), and Grant (Nancy), three grandchildren and two great- grandchildren, as well as one brother, Bob. The family would like to thank the staff at Brookhaven Care Centre and Mountain View Village, where Chuck spent his last few years, for their loving care. Chuck passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and set sail on his final and ultimate journey. Bon Voyage, Gramps! No service will be held, at Chuck's request. DUNNE, Melville James (Jim), Clearance Diver, RCN (09 Jul 1923 - 22 Nov 2016) - passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 22, 2016, at the age of 93 at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary. Jim was born in Brooks, AB, where he remained until 1939 when he left to join the RCN, where he became a Clearance Diver. After completing his service, Jim started working as a lineman for Calgary Power, which he did until his retirement in 1984. Jim moved to Airdrie in 1956 where he met Dolly, the love of his life, through the phone office. Jim was a hard working member of the Airdrie Community, serving as Deputy Mayor, charter member of Airdrie Lions Club and the Airdrie Legion. Jim could be found flooding the old rink early in the mornings or enjoying time at the Airdrie curling rink, where he skipped a good game. Jim and Dolly travelled extensively until Dolly's illness and passing in 1998. Jim continued to live in the same white house on the corner until his passing. Jim and Dolly loved spending time water skiing and boating with the family in their younger years and found great joy in visits from all the kids and grandkids. Jim will be greatly missed by his constant companion Brody; his daughters Deanna (Mike) Watkins, Shannon (Garth) Richardson; his stepsons Raymond (Marilyn) Shaurette, Richard Shaurette; his grandkids Kaylea (Clayton) Hepburn, Joshua Richardson, Dawson Richardson, Spencer Richardson, Denise (Bob) Bott, Carrie (Stuart) Langland, Lance (Penny) Johnstone, Barbara (Jeff) Robson, Carmen (Randy) Ingram, Leslie (Tony) Mosher, Jeannie (Cody) Oppeboen; numerous great- grandkids and four great-great-grandkids. Jim was predeceased by his loving wife Dolly; and brother Ronald Dunne. CROZIER, George Arnold (11 May 1925 - 26 Nov 2016) - Peacefully in his 92nd year at Toronto East General Hospital. Pre-deceased by his wife Frieda (Miller). Deeply missed by his niece Laura, and the Crozier family. Retired from Consumers Gas after 43 years. Was a Navy veteran of WWII and a long time member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 258.

GASENA, Lawrence Maxwell (Larry) (15 Nov 1925 - 20 Nov 2016) - It was wonderful that Larry was able to celebrate his 91st birthday, cake and all, with his church family before he left to be with Our Lord. Born in Winnepegosis, Manitoba, Larry was raised in Flin Flon, and at 17 he joined the Royal Canadian Navy. He met and married Wilma, and they had children Blake, Linda and his darling Donna. After 20 years in Rossland working for Cominco, Larry chose a new path and moved to Vancouver where he attended Langara College and earned his degree in Social Work. He went on to become a federal parole officer, which was the job he was destined to do. In 1983, he met and fell in love with Elsie, the love of his life. Larry and Elsie just celebrated their 30th anniversary in October. Predeceased by his brother Lloyd, sister Elaine, and his daughter Donna in 1981, Larry is survived by his sister Gwen Thatcher, his loving wife Elsie, son Blake, daughter Linda and husband Joe, grandchildren Kelly (Ian), Michael and Darcy, stepchildren Kelvin (Joan), Cindy and Greg (Cheryl). He left a blended family of 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, whom he loved so dearly. We will miss you Grandpa Larry. WOOD, Ivan Merritt (14 Feb 1924 - 19 Nov 2016) - passed away peacefully in his sleep at Victoria General Hospital at the age of 92. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Doris in 2011 and his sister, Audrey Monson in 2007. He is survived by his daughter, Janis Johnson (Dennis); his son, Robert (Alanna), and his sister, Shirley Davies. He also leaves four grandchildren, Jarrod (Heike), Kimberly (Scott), Lorissa (Gary), Chelsey (Doug), as well as six great grandchildren. Ivan served in the Canadian Navy in the battle of the North Atlantic. He worked at B.C. Forest Products in the Plywood Plant until he retired. Ivan was an avid hockey player in his younger years, curled at Victoria Curling Club, enjoyed golf and fishing. Special thanks to staff at 6B South who took great care of Ivan. CHARNELL, Robert Francis (Bob), PO.Tel - was born in Weyburn, SK on 18 Apr 1919. He moved to Victoria when he enlisted in the Navy. He was a wireless operator on convoy escort duty in the North Atlantic during WW2 on HMCS Brandon and HMCS Charlottetown. After the war, Bob moved to Port Alberni and built a bookkeeping service there. He also worked in auto sales for many years and in semi-retirement as a watchman for MacMillan Bloedel. Bob moved to Echo Village in Port Alberni in 2008. He was a member of Somass Legion Branch 169 in Port Alberni. Bob died on 01 Jul 2010 after proudly participating that morning in the Canada Day Parade with the Royal Canadian Legion as a representative of Naval Veterans in the 100th Anniversary of the Canadian Navy.

COWAN, Stanley (Stan) - Stan was born on 04 Dec 1926 at Edmonton, AB. On 12 May 1946 he joined the Naval Reserve and then on 15 Dec 1949 transferred to the RCN. He completed a Sub Lieutenant's course in England before returning to Canada where he was assigned to HMCS Crusader. Afterwards he trained university cadets and then was posted to HMCS Sioux. Stan returned to England for a torpedo and anti-submarine course. Back in Canada, Stan was first stationed at Halifax and then the West Coast for five years on minesweepers and a year on HMCS Saguenay. Stan's last five years of his twenty-three year naval career were spent at Halifax in fleet school. Stan attended evening classes there and earned his Bachelor of Education. In 1973 Stan was discharged in Victoria and began a teaching career until retiring in 1987. Three years later, Stand and his wife Elinor moved to Qualicum Beach where they joined the local branch. Stan served on the executive for several years and was Branch President in 1993. Stan served twenty-nine years in the Legion before his death in 2011.

ELLIOTT, Glen Lenard - was born in Fernie, BC in 1922. He was awarded the 1939-1945 France & German Star with clasp, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with clasp and the 1939-1945 War Medal. He passed away in 1993.

FOSTER, Kenneth Sinclair (03 Sep 1934 - 14 Oct 2010) - Ken was born in Rockglen, SK on 03 Sep 1934. He studied as a Naval Cadet at the Royal Roads in Victoria from 1952-1954. After graduating as a Midshipman, he served on the aircraft carrier HMCS Magnificent based in Halifax. He was then promoted to A/Slt and posted to the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, England. After completing his studies there, he was promoted to Slt and posted to HMCS Cayuga and then HMCS New Glasgow. He was promoted to Lt in 1958. In 1960 Ken attended the Long Weapons Course in Halifax before serving in HMCS Bonaventure and late on HMCS Margaree as Weapons Officer. The then served for three years with the Canadian Defence Liaison Staff Weapons in London, England, before returning to NDHQ Ottawa where he was promoted to LCdr in 1973. In 1976 he went to CFB Esquimalt for his final posting and retired in 1979. He was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration. He was a member of Legion Branch 210 in Lake Cowichan for more than 25 years. He died on 14 Oct 2010.

GAMMON, Bryan T., CD, C1BN, 7835-E, RCN / C.A.F. (served 02 Apr 1951 - 09 Mar 1979) (13 Oct 1929 - 02 Sep 2008) - passed away peacefully at The Lodge at Broadmead. Predeceased by his parents and three brothers, he is survived by his wife of 51 years, Heather nee Douglas; daughters, Karen Gammon (Dwayne Robinson), Burnaby, B.C.; Jolayne Gammon, Victoria, B.C.; Janet Breuker (Ed), Victoria, B.C. Grandchildren, Jake Breuker and Brittany Robinson. Bryan is also survived by his sister, June Wilson, Winnipeg, Man., sistersin-Iaw, Lois Gammon, Dryden, Ont.; Norah Gammon, Kitchener, Ont. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Bryan was a Korean War Veteran who served in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1951 to 1979. His undying love of the sea was with him until the end. He will be lovingly remembered for his outgoing personality, brilliant smile and his great sense of humour. A graveside service will be held at The Garden of Christus, Hatley Memorial Park on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. A celebration of Bryan's life is to be held at a later date TBA. GAMMON, Bryan - was born in Dryden, Ont. He joined the Royal Canadian navy on 03 Apr 1951 at HMCS Chippawa in Winnipeg. He served in HMCS Antigonish, HMCS Ontario, HMCS Athabaskan, HMCS Sioux, HMCS Cayuga, HMCS St Laurent, HMCS Jonquiere, HMCS Ottawa, HMCS Beacon Hill, HMCS Columbia, HMCS Crescent, HMCS Chaudiere, HMCS Saskatchewan and HMCS Yukon. Bryan was awarded the Special Service Medal, the Canadian Peacekeeping Medal, The United Nations Korea Medal, the Korean War Service Medal, The Canadian Volunteer Service Medal for Korea, The Centennial Medal and the Canadian Forces Decoration with Clasp. Bryan was a member of Esquimalt Dockyard Legion Branch 172 for 30 years. He died in Victoria on 02 Sep 2008. (Legion Recognition Book)

GALLAGHER, Lillian Dorothy WRCNS (Wrens) (10 Feb 1919 - 15 Nov 2011) - passed away in Ladysmith. She was born in Nanaimo, February 10, 1919, lived on Gabriola Island for many years, and moved to Ladysmith in 1937. Predeceased by her parents, John & Annie (Rollo) Gallagher; brothers: George, Stanley and Jack; and niece Rosalie Rodway. She is survived by her older sister, Verna Wargo, Extension; five nieces: Dorothy Rodway, Nanaimo; Lorraine Viala, Ladysmith; Randy Graczyk- Ladysmith; Dawn Noye, Tahsis; Kathy Gallagher, Nanaimo; also numerous great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great nieces and great-great nephews. Lil served as a WREN from 1942-47. She returned to Ladysmith after completing her service and resumed working with the Comox Logging Company (now known as Timberwest) until she retired. Lil joined the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #171 in Ladysmith in 1947 and was an active member until her health failed. Service will be at the RCL Branch #171 in Ladysmith on Saturday, December 3, 2011 at 1p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the RCL Branch #171 in Ladysmith. HARTLEY, William Jackson - was born in Vancouver, BC in 1924. He served in the RCN during WW II. He was a member of the RCL Branch # 109 in Gibsons, BC. William passed away in 1979 

IRVING, Thomas Swan, Steward - was born in Toronto, Ontario in 1922. His parents and older brother had immigrated to Canada from Glasgow, Scotland after World War One. He grew up in Vancouver, BC and attended Vancouver Technical High School, but his mother was disappointed when he left school at the end of Grade 11. He had started to work as a woodworker at the Restmore Manufacturing Company during the summer and liked the money. Thomas volunteered for the RCN during WW II. He never spoke about his service, but according to his naval records, he joined as a Steward in August, 1942, and was discharged in October 1945 as a Leading Steward. He was drafted to numerous shore bases during his time and and also served on HMCS Huron on the East cost. After the war, Thomas returned to his job at Restmore until the company closed and he later worked for the Post Office. Tom was a member of legion Branch 26, South Vancouver for many years. KILFORD, Roy - was born in Fiske, Saskatchewan in 1920. He served in teh RCN from 16 Jun 1942 until 02 Nov 1945. Ro advanced to Stoker 1c on 06 Sep 1943. He was drafted to HMCS Cornwallis, HMCS Naden, HMCS Tecumseh, HMCS Stadacona and HMCS Peregrine. He served in the minesweeper HMCS Kapuskasing. Whenever Roy was asked about his service he would become quiet, teary-eyed, and wouldn't or couldn't say a thing about that part of his life. After he was discharged, Roy moved to Nelson, BC where he became quite successful in the real estate business. Roy died in Jan 1992.

LAWLEY, Madge (née WRIGHT), WRCNS - Madge was born in Moose Jaw, SK in 1921. She served in Canada in the WRCNS in WW 2. She passed away in 1995.

MacLEAN, Allan Gordon - was born in Melita, MB in 1923. He served in the RCN during WW 2 on HMCS Pictou (K146) and HMCS Norsyd (K520) on the North Atlantic and to Russia. Allan was a Legion member in Vancouver. He died in 2002.

MATHER, Alfred Percy - was born in 1917 and served in the RCN during WW 2. Alfred died in 1959. His brother John Leon Mather also served in the RCN.

MATHER, John Leon - was born in 1923 and served in the RCN during WW 2 on HMCS Chilliwack. John died in 2008. His brother Alfred Percy Mather also served in the RCN in WW2.

NEWMAN, Ernest M. (Ernie) - was born in Vancouver, BC on 03 Oct 1916. He joined the RCN and trained on both East and West coats. He served in HMCS Prince David, HMCS St Francis and HMCS Outremont ad well as other ships. Ernie was on duty in the North Atlantic when they captured an enemy submarine. He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of Petty Officer. After the war, he and his wife Madeline settled in Langley, BC where he was a member of Legion Branch 21. Ernie passed away in 1982.

HMCS OUTREMONT - Served in Outremont during the Second World War

OWEN, Mervyn, 4252, RCN - was born in Anyox, BC on 22 Apr 1922. He joined the RCN in March 1941 and served during WW 2 on HMCS Ottawa, HMCS Huron and HMCS Warrior. He survived the sinking of HMCS Ottawa on 13 Sep 1952, 500 miles east of Newfoundland while on convoy escort. At the time of the sinking he was an Able Seaman. Only 65 of the 160-member crew survived. Mervyn received the 1939-1945 Star, The Atlantic Star, the 1939-1945 War Medal, The Russian Star, and the Canadian Volunteer Service medal. He was a member of Legion Branch 88 in Maple Ridge until his death on 02 Dec 2007.

PLATT, Joseph Vincent (Vince) - was born in Spiritwood, SK in 1921. He served in the RCNVR during WW2 in Canada, Britain, and on the High Seas on HMCS Nabob, HMCS Loch Alvie and HMCS Qu'Appelle. Vince was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, The Atlantic Star with France and Germany Bar, The Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with bar, and the 1939-1945 War Medal. He was a member of Legion Branch 171 in Ladysmith for 58 years. Vince died n 2004.

ROSEWALL, Norman William George, Petty Officer Higher Submarine Detector, V30653, RCNVR - (08 Jul 1921 - 26 Mar 2007) was born in Nanaimo, BC in 1921. He was a sailor aboard ML Q080, on of the Fairmile Motor Launches during the Battle for the Gulf of St. Lawrence from 1942 on. Base in the Gaspé, the launches travelled through to Gulf to Bay Bulls, NFLD and to Rimouski, QC. On one trip, the small boats encountered such fierce storms and high waves that the crew lost sight of the mast tops of the lead ship and it took eighteen hours to reach Pictou, NS. They tied up alongside a lend-lease destroyer from the U.S. and the destroyer's Captain sent Q080's crew double hot rums. They went ashore to eat for the first time in a day-and-a-half and were so bedraggled people thought they were shipwreck survivors. Q080 later went to Boston, New York, Norfolk, Savannah, Miami, where it was based at the Miami Yacht Club, and Havana, Cuba where it anchored off the Isle of Pines, a prison island. Norman was a member of Legion Branch 257 in Lantzville, BC for fifty-one years. He died in 2007.

ROSTE, Lyle Elsworth - was born on his family's farm near Hinchcliffe, SK on 08 Jul 1924. He joined the Navy on 21 Feb 1944 and served as a torpedo-man on HMCS St Thomas, HMS Ferret, HMCS Reindeer, HMCS Grou and HMCS Sioux. He was on convoy duty in the North Atlantic, on patrol n the seas around Britain, the Mediterranean off Africa, and the Murmansk run to Russia in winter where the crew had to chip off the ice formed by waves washing over the ship to prevent the ship from sinking.  When the war ended in Europe, Lyle volunteered for service against Japan but the war in the Pacific ended while he was enroute. He wad discharged in Esquimalt on 08 Jan 1946. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the France and German Star, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with bar, and the 1939-1945 War Medal. Lyle returned home to SK and later moved to Quesnel, BC. He was a member of the Legion in Preeceville and Endeavour, SK before joining Branch 94 in Quesnel. Lyle died on 24 Nov 1989.

HMCS SIOUX - Served in Sioux during the Second World War

TURNER, Alec E., Tel, RCN - was born in 1924 at Kieghly, Yorkshire, England. He and his family came to Canada in 1929 when Alex was just five years old. At seventeen, Alex left school and enlisted in the RCN as a Boy Seaman. He trained as a Telegraphist and served in the Fisherman's Reserve patrolling the west coast of BC. He served in a variety of ships including BC Lady, San Thomas and Nitinat. By 1944, Alex was old enough to go on active service and was assigned to HMCS Gatineau in the Atlantic. The ship supported the D-Day operation on 06 Jun 1944. After VJ Day, Alex was on HMCS Grou, then HMCS Uganda from 1945-1947. Alex sailed on Uganda for a goodwill tour after the war, departing Esquimalt in February 1946. The ship circumnavigated South America and returned to Esquimalt three months later in May 1946. Alex left he Navy in March 1949. For his service he was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, The France and German Star, The CVSM with bar and The War Medal  (1939-1945).

Alex married Violet Chesney in December 1948 and with a new family moved to Nelway, BC in 1955. Alex first joined the Legion, Branch #14 (Rossland) in 1952 but most of his long service was with Branch #217 at Salmo, BC. Alec's service to his country extended beyond his RCN service; he worked for thirty-two years in the Federal Public Service as a Customs Officer until 1981. In 1967, Alex added the Centennial Medal to his list of service medals for his "valuable service to the nation." Alex died in 2014.

TARBUTT, John (Jack), Stoker (15 Aug 1924 - 25 Nov 2015) - It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Jack Tarbutt at the age of 91 years. Dear and loving husband to Janet for more than 70 years. Wonderful father to Rick (Lois), Val Jolley (Ray), Jim (Pauline Thompson), Laura Hyk (Jim) and Lisa. Loving Grandpa to Jennifer Diguer (Dave), Danielle (Dave Macdonald), Chris Hyk (Dezaray Lilliman) and Michael. Great Grandpa to Justin and Matthew Diguer. He is survived by his sister Marie Galvin. Jack's accomplishments were many. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy on the HMCS Lindsay during WWII. He was a long-standing member of Trinity United Church, Hannon. Jack was a past Master of the Harmony Masonic Lodge in Binbrook. For many years, he was the Business Manager and President of Local 18 Carpenters' Union as well as the President of the Ontario Council of Carpenters. Jack served as President of the Hamilton & District Labour Council. He was also a former board member of the Hamilton-Burlington United Way. BOHRSON, Wesley Herbert - The death of Wesley Herbert, age 84 of Lutheran Towers, Saskatoon, SK (originally of Hanley) occurred on Friday, Dec. 19, 2003 at the Royal University Hospital. Wes is survived by his sister, Jean Bohrson of Saskatoon; brother Robert (Leone) Bohrson of Hanley; and sister Blanch (Chester) Pawsey) of Alberta Beach, AB; sister-in-law, Gladys (Bohrson) McJannet of Davidson; and numerous nieces, nephews and their families. He was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Esther Bohrson; brother, Thomas Bohrson all of Hanley. He was a navy veteran, life time member of the Hanley Legion, Farmer, avid sports fan, enjoyed reading and travelled extensively. COOPER, Walter - The death of Mr. Walter Cooper, husband of Lyma (Burgess) Cooper of Grand Bay-Westfield occurred on June 4, 2010 at Ridgewood Veteran's Home. Born in Newfoundland on April 12, 1913, he was the son of the late Ester (Tizzard) and Archibald Cooper. Mr. Cooper moved to Saint John at the age of 8. Walter served in the Canadian Navy during WW II. He then worked as an orderly at the Saint John General Hospital until his retirement. Walter is survived by his wife of 30 years Lyma, 2 sisters; Flora Mercer and Dorothy Bolingbroke of Burlington, Ont., several nieces and nephews, brother-in-law Johnny Adams of N.S. He was predeceased by his parents Archibald and Ester Cooper, five sisters and two brothers. BENSON, Ernest Laurent (Ernie) - "Forever in our hearts" It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father and "pepe" on November 29, 2016 at the age of 81, after a brief illness in Leamington, Ontario. Ernie was born to Romeo and Bertha Benson (Melanson) on November 13, 1935 in Kapuskasing, Ontario. He played hockey for his school team, and was a centre for the Kapuskasing All Stars. Ernie was a proud veteran of the Royal Canadian Navy. He enlisted in 1953 and served as a jeep driver, training new reserves and as a radar operator until 1958 when he left to devote himself to his family. He was very active with the Royal Canadian Naval Association (RCNA), Admiral Hose Branch in Windsor, Ontario, the HMCS Huron Association, the HMCS Uganda/ Quebec Association and was a member of the Legion Branch 201 Essex, Ontario. This year, he was a proud recipient of a Quilt of Valor from the Canadian QOV Association. Ernie is survived by Phyllis, his beloved wife of 59 years, his daughters Carmen (John Smith) and Corinne Storey, his sons Stephen (Wendy) and Joseph (Monica), his grandchildren Carey, Jessica, David, Erika, Sara, Dustin, Daniel, Jacob, Zachary and his great-grandchildren, Madison, Nathan, Danielle and Owen. "Pep" was a passionate, loving and generous man who was adored by his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ernie loved to travel and was always ready to 'hit the road'. He and his wife Phyllis shared many journeys together over their 59 years of marriage. He especially loved travelling to Naval reunions where he shared good times and 'raised a glass' with his many friends and shipmates over the years. He will be cremated. INKINEN, Donald Allen (16 Dec 1929 - 28 Nov 2016) - Peacefully on November 28, 2016 passed away surrounded by family at Grey Nuns Community Hospital. He was predeceased by his parents Pietari and Ida, brothers Kauko and Ron (twin), son Brian and loving wife of 60 years Doreen. Will be lovingly remembered by daughters Barbara (Dave) Purcell, Brenda, son Steven (Pam), grandson Kurt (Michelle), granddaughters Kaarina (Lee) and Amanda, great-grandson Baylen, niece Norma (Trevor) Stromberg-Jones, nephew Ross (Shirley) Stromberg, sisters-in-law Sirrka and Audrey, various nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, friends, and fellow volunteers. Don served in the RCN and then with the RCAF. He was a local Edmonton business owner of Centre III Microwave Repair and Sales for many years after retirement from the forces. He had a love of hockey supporting the Edmonton Oilers. He and Doreen had a love of cruising – taking many trips globally. Since 2009 after the passing of Doreen, Don has clocked up over 7000 hours of volunteering at Edmonton General. He also took up dancing lessons and participated in local competitions. CHALMERS, Norman John (Norm) - passed away on Saturday, November 26, 2016 in his 80th year at Bridgepoint Health in Toronto following a long, hard fought battle with cancer. Loving father of Richard and grandfather to Samantha and Brendan, sadly predeceased by daughter Robyn. Born May 20, 1937 in Kapuskasing, he grew up in Oakville and lived in Halifax, Oshawa, Toronto, Richmond Hill and eventually retired to Wasaga Beach. Following 10 years service in the Royal Canadian Navy he spent many years working for Honeywell Information Systems and Spalding (Callaway) Canada. CORDONI, Dante (16 Jan 1925 - 19 Nov 2016) - Dad was a man that touched everyone's lives he came in contact with, known for his wisdom, his diplomacy, his easy laugh, his kindness, his politeness, and of course the toothpicks and spearmint gum in his shirt pocket. He loved his wife, Margaret, and his kids, grandkids and great grandkids unconditionally, and taught all of us that there was nothing in the world we couldn't accomplish if we wanted it enough. He had a diverse work life, starting out as a gunner in the Canadian navy, then a commercial fisherman, then a welder, then a business agent for the Pile Drivers Union where he fought for worker's rights. He retired to a life of sport fishing, travelling, and gardening with his best friend (mom) and now they are together once more. He will be sorely missed by his children, Pat (Stewart), Bob (Heather) and Terrie, his grandkids, Dax (Alison), Trina (Cam), Meghan (Brian), Cam (Carla), Dan (Erica), Ryan (Ashley), Kevyn, and his great grandkids , Kai, Lily, Hazel, Esme, Koa and Easton. He loved a glass of wine at the end of the day and we will drink to him and remember him for his love, his humour and his favourite saying - "It's a real eye catcher!" McMILLAN, Eric C. - was born and raised in Toronto, spending the majority of his 92 years with his family in Stratford. Beloved husband of Betty (Ashbourne) and father of four: son Eric G. McMillan (Wendy), their children Erin (Chris) and their daughter Zoe, Owen (Lan) and their son Aiden, and Richard; daughter Suzanne Kelly (Chris) and their children Baird, Liam and Sydney; daughter Beatrice McMillan and her children Jaymeson and Matheson Denboer; and daughter Judith Gilbert (John) and their children James, Alyse (Tom), Jules and Michelle Thompson (Chad). Also survived by sisters- in-law, brothers-in-law and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Eric was predeceased by his parents, Jean and James McMillan and Ada Carruthers, brother George Marks (Irene) and sister Jean Morrison (Harry). During WWII he joined the Canadian Navy serving on a convoy ship as a Morse Code Operator. After the war he married Betty and moved to Stratford to teach Phys Ed at The Stratford Collegiate Vocational Institute (now Stratford Central Secondary School) and when Stratford Northwestern Secondary School first opened he continued teaching and coaching there, choosing the team colours garnet and grey and the school's mascot, the Husky. Sports were a central part of Eric's life throughout his youth and adult life. Later he became a Guidance Counsellor. He loved puttering in the gardens of his homestead. Many summers were spent at Kettle Point where he was Captain of Watermanship at The Ipperwash Army Camp during the summers and once retired, became a snowbird spending time with family and friends in Florida. There, he continued to play tennis, golf and cards and enjoy dancing and fishing. Eric was past President of the Kiwanis Club of Stratford, a member of Avondale United Church and contributed behind the scenes during many election campaigns. The family would like to thank Dr. Thompson and the Spruce Lodge staff who cared for Eric. NELSON, John Bruce (17 Aug 1939 - 02 Dec 2016) We are sad to announce after a long battle, Bruce succumbed to his chronic conditions on December 2, 2016. Bruce is survived by his daughters, Betty (Stan) Powers, Brenda (Rob Alsford) Nelson and Kathy (Tom Jones) Gray; his granddaughter Katrina (Melissa) Young-Powers; his grandson Garrett Powers; his siblings, Doug Nelson and Nancy Swerhun; as well as many nieces and nephews. Bruce was predeceased by wife Sandy (2001), and his siblings Jim and Edith. Born in Calgary, Bruce was raised in the Drumheller Valley until his late teens. He joined the Navy in 1958 and served a 5-year hitch. After being discharged in 1963, he moved to southern Ontario and began his manufacturing career with Hamilton Steel (eventually North American Rockwell). He married his wife, Sandy, in 1964 and soon after they started their family with the arrival of the first of three daughters later that year. Growing homesick, Bruce moved his family to Calgary in 1978, where he continued manufacturing springs with Standens until his retirement in 2006. The family would like to thank the staff at the Peter Lougheed Hospital for their excellent care of Bruce this past year. A Memorial Service will be held for Bruce at Pierson's Forest Lawn Chapel (4121 - 17 Avenue SE, Calgary) on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family respectfully requests that donations be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the MS Society of Canada. WADDELL, Charles Stewart (Chuck) (08 Mar 1924 - 20 Nov 2016) - With heavy hearts, we announce that Chuck, beloved husband of Phyllis Waddell (nee Hughes), passed away peacefully at his home in Airdrie, AB, on Monday, November 20, 2016 at the age of 92 years. Chuck was born in Nanton, AB, and spent his early life on the farm with his parents Charlie and Daisy, and his eleven siblings. Chuck's life journeys were highlighted by serving in the Royal Canadian Navy during WWII, and meeting and marrying Phyllis; the two of them embarking on a 69 years long loving relationship together. All that knew Chuck knew that he enjoyed a good laugh; more so, he loved making others laugh (and he was good at it)! The only thing he loved more was his family. Well, back at ya Chuck! Chuck leaves behind his loving wife, Phyllis; daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Peter Bourassa; son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Sandra Waddell; his two grandchildren, Darrin Baker (Pam) and Kendra Baker (Larry); along with numerous great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces and friends. PETTIT, Philip Maurice - age 79, passed away at his residence in Centralia on Friday, January 24, 2003. He has been a resident of Lewis County since 1961. He was born on May 9, 1923 in Manchester, England to Walter and Doris (Jenkinson) Pettit. The family relocated to Canada prior to World War II. He completed high school in Victoria, BC, then enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy, serving as a radar technician on a mine sweeper that participated in the invasion of Normandy. He married Margaret Ellen Sutherland on December 27, 1947 in Calvary, Alberta. The couple relocated to Los Angles, CA, where he worked as a golf pro while attending college at Cal State, L.A. (now UCLA). After completing his schooling, they moved to Seattle, WA where he worked as a golf pro for 10 years, prior to settling in Centralia 1961. He retrained as a Real Estate Broker and took classes in computer training at Centralia College. He owned and operated the Kit Carson Realty in Chehalis and Centralia, retiring in the early 1980's. A man of strong convictions, he took an active interest in his community, school boards and in local politics. He was accessible to people needing business or personal advice. He enjoyed fishing, golf, and gardening. He is survived by his wife, of 55 years, Margaret, at home in Centralia, WA; his son Philip (and daughter-in-law, Kay) of Yakima, WA and 1 granddaughter; a brother, John Pettit of Victoria, BC and a sister, Yvonne Harrison of Qualicum Beach, BC. He was preceded in death by his brother, Clem. Memorial donations may be directed to the Salvation Army local food bank in Centralia, WA. Cremation arrangements are under the care and direction of Newell-Hoerling's Mortuary in Centralia. GLOVER, James Arthur Garwood (31 May 1932 - 26 Oct 2013) - It is with a heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, James Arthur Garwood Glover, 81 of Greenwood, Kings Co., passed away suddenly Saturday, October 26, 2013, in Soldiers Memorial Hospital in Middleton. He was a son of John Arthur and Monica (Deloughery), deceased. He was educated in Ottawa and Eganville, Ont., where he graduated in June of 1950. After a short five-month stint in RAF Aircrew training he joined the RCN and went to HMCS Cornwallis in August 1951 and returned in January 1951 for a radio communicator course then to HMCS Magnificent for further training. In March of 1953 he volunteered for a tour of duty in the Korean War aboard HMCS Huron, departing Halifax on April 29, 1953 and re-turning March 13, 1954. In April 1954 he married the love of his life, Shirley Kelly, who predeceased him in May of 1988. In May 1954 he was on the commissioning party for HMCS Penetang. In June 1954 he was drafted to Naval Radio Station Albro Lake in Dartmouth where he finished his naval career on August 19, 1956. In November 1956 he joined the RCAF and following basic training was posted to MARCOM headquarters in Halifax. Next came a tour in Whitehorse with a six-month side trip to Alert, N.W.T. , after which came postings to Summerside, P.E.I., Torbay and St. John's, N.L., CCHQ in Ottawa, Greenwood then a transfer to Trenton, Ont., which was his last posting in 1976. In 1977 he was employed with Canada Post in Greenwood where he finally retired in 1995. He belonged to 107 Wing RCAFA Greenwood, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 98 Kingston, Council 6297 Knights of Columbus Greenwood and FSNA Western Annapolis Valley Branch. He was a proud sponsor of World Vision and contributed much to many charities. He is survived by his children, Margo (Richard) Wright, Comox, B.C.; Judy, Dartmouth; James (Dina), Meadowvale; grandchildren, Chelsey Glover, Kingston; Devan Glover, Calgary, Alta.; Megan Glover, also of Meadowvale and Tyler Wright, Toronto, Ont.; great-grandchildren, Bayleigh and Maddo; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, he was predeceased by his brothers, Guy (Toronto); John (Victoria, B.C.); Daniel (Brockville, Ont.); his mother-in-law, Marg Clark (Greenwood); brothers-in-law, Reginald Kelly, and Ted Kelly (Brantford, Ont.). RYAN, Eric Alphonsus - age 94, Mulgrave, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, November 27th, 2016, while surrounded by family members. Eric was born in Mulgrave to parents Clement and Bridget (Watt) Ryan on November 10th, 1922. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Anna (DeCoste) along with his children, Ron (Kathy) Ryan, Ottawa; John (Bev) Ryan, Scottsdale, Ariz.; Linda (Loren) Cushing, Yarmouth; Kevin (Cathy) Ryan, Calgary; Sharon (Michael) MacDonald, Tumbler Ridge, B.C.; Dennis (Linda) Ryan, Dartmouth; Basil (Linda) Ryan, Mulgrave; Jenny (Donovan) Cunningham, Yarmouth; Debbie (Darrell) Hadley, Mulgrave; Bruce (Roxanne) Ryan, Corner Brook; Karen (Ben) Lundrigan, Mulgrave; and Craig (Rhonda) Ryan, Mulgrave. Affectionately known as DoDo, our Dad lived a long and very productive life. He managed his affairs based on hard work, honesty and having faith in Catholicism. To reinforce his deep faith one of his favorite saying was 'God bless you'. He was a man of solid principles and values in life and he always encouraged us to do better. His intellect was keen and he was a strong advocate of the value of education. Dad had instilled in all of us that family came first and that hard work would never hurt anyone. Dad participated in public service virtually all his life; first through military service in the Royal Canadian Navy onboard HMCS Chebogue, then as Captain on the car ferries that plied the Strait of Canso. When the ferries stopped operating, Dad spent the next 27 years working for the Department of Highways at the Canso Causeway Tolls where he retired as a Supervisor. Dad was the last Second World War veteran in Mulgrave and he was a Legion member for many years as well as a 34-year veteran of the Mulgrave Volunteer Fire Department. Although Dad retired from his day job, he continued to fish lobster until he was 82. Visitation will be in Mulgrave and Area Resting Place today, Wednesday, November 30th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be in St. Lawrence Parish with Father Allan MacPhie officiating on Thursday, December 1st at 11 a.m. Family flowers only please. FERGUSON, William Irwin (Bill) LCdr, RCNR - was born in Dec 10, 1913 in Vancouver, BC. As a boy, Bill joined the Sea Scouts and later the RCNVR in the early 1930s. When war was declared in 1939, Bill was one of a small number of trained and experienced naval officers. He was assigned to HMCS Chilliwack, one of Canada's newest Flower-class Corvettes, at Esquimalt. LCdr Ferguson and the Chilliwack sailed for Halifax via the Panama Canal in the spring of 1941. The Chilliwack then served on convoy escort duty in the Atlantic on the famous "Triangle Run." Bill returned to civilian life after the war and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Mayne Island Branch for twenty five year. He passed away on Oct 28, 1993 at Mayne Island.

WIGHT, Clifford, Lt, RCNVR - was just nineteen when he enlisted in the RCNVR at HMCS Discovery in Vancouver in 1940. Cliff, a local Burnaby boy, was soon off to Esquimalt for training as a telegrapher. His first ship was HMCS Ehkoli, a former seiner fishing boat. In 1941 the Ehkoli was commissioned into the Fisherman's Reserve as a Torpedo Recovery Vessel and patrolled the BC coast as part of the so called "Gumboot Navy." After officers' training at King's College, Halifax, Cliff served on HMCS Comox in 1944 on minesweeping duties off the east coast and protecting the approaches to Halifax harbour. Next he served on the frigate HMCS Sussexvale on escort duties until June, 1945. With the end of the war in Europe, Cliff awaited a possible assignment to the Pacific Theatre but a critical family illness prompted a compassionate leave and Cliff returned home. While attending to his family, the war ended. Cliff was discharged where he enlisted at HMCS Discovery with the rank of Slt. Cliff went on to enjoy a happy and successful life in business and the community. He married Mary, a nurse whom he met in Esquimalt during training, and for the next sixty years were together raising four children and enjoying their seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was a member of RCL Branch 240 (Crescent Beach) until his death in February of 2005 in Ladner, BC.

LUNDQUIST, Harry Luther - Died: 28 May 2016 in Power River, BC. Born in Prince Rupert, Harry served in the Canadian Navy from September 1939 to 1945. He came to Powell River in August 1945 and worked on the wharf at the mill until he retired in 1983.

GAGE, John Thomas (04 Apr 1939 - 05 Dec 2016) - age 77 of Dartmouth passed away Monday, December 5, 2016 at Camp Hill Veterans’ Memorial Building, QEII. Born in Plymouth, Montserrat, British West Indies, he was a son of the late Thomas and Dorothy (White) Gage. He served 33 years in the Royal Canadian Navy. He loved working on cars and would often help anyone he saw stranded on the roadside. He could repair anything that had a plug, but was most passionate about his 1965 Ford Mustang, a car he owned for 48 years. He was often seen working on it in his front driveway, and made friends with many people who stopped for a closer look. John gave to several local charities. He enjoyed his vegetable garden and plum trees. A devoted father and grandfather, John often expressed that his family was his most prized possession. John is survived by his daughters, Deanne Mitchell (Gordon), Toronto; Jonanne Gage, Vancouver; grandchildren, Larissa and Emily; brother, Joseph, London, England; sisters, Anne Henrietta Amos, Virginia; Catherine Riley, Montreal; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Matilda Gage; brother, Daniel Gage; and sister-in-law, Olive Gage. Visitation will be held from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm on Friday, December 9 at Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth. A funeral service, also at Atlantic Funeral Home, will take place at 11 am on Saturday, December 10, with reception to follow. Burial will take place in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. LeVERNOIS, Leon DeMontigny (24 Dec 1939 - 04 Dec 2016) - Age 76, died peacefully in his sleep, on December 4, 2016, in The Admiral Long Term Care Facility, Dartmouth. Born in Ottawa, Carleton Co. He was the son of Leon DeMontigny Sr. and Gracie Elizabeth (Casselman) LeVernois. Monty retired from the RCN after 28 years of dedicated service as a Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class Marine Engineer, where he proceeded to the Saint John Shipbuilding Frigate Program as a Logistics Officer. He was happiest when RVing with his wife, Avis, travelling throughout Canada and the United States, following stock car racing. Besides his parents, Monty was predeceased by his older sister, Penny Pavigliante. He is survived by his loving and caring wife, Avis Jean (Clark), of 55 years of marriage; devoted sons, Todd (Linda), Falmouth; Robert (Krystal), Stewiacke; Troy (Nicole), Tallinn, Estonia; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and three nephews. The memorial service will be held on December 10 at 3 p.m. in A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland St., Dartmouth, with reception to follow. Born in Bridgewater, he was the son of the late John H. and Evelyn L. (Hirtle) Hiltz. John is survived by Shirley (Hatfield) Hiltz, his wife of 63 years; son, Fraser, Vancouver, B.C., daughters, Sharon Riggs, Waverley, Leslie Bierman, Longmont, CO. He is fondly remembered by six grandchildren; brothers, Dave, Ingleside, Ont., Michael, Orangeville, Ont. John attended Acadia University, graduating with a BSc in ’52. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy in ’51, retiring as a LCDR in ’75. He then started a second career in Real Estate Appraisal, retiring 12 years later in 1987. John’s special loves were golf, sailing, curling and travel. He and Shirley enjoyed many years of exciting travel over most of the world’s continents and then he enjoyed Major League sports on TV from the comfort of his armchair. A Royal Canadian Legion Tribute will be held on Friday, December 9 at 1:45 pm with the memorial service at 2 pm. and then a reception and visitation will follow, all in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro, Rev. COCKROFT, George (22 Jun 1924 - 17 Feb 2008) - Sadly missed by his children, Bonnie (Barry) Busch, Allison (Allan) Jennings, Charles (Velma) Cockroft and their mother, Beatrice Vollrath. He is also survived by sisters, Shirley Cockroft, Treva (Lloyd) Brooks and family and Edna Fawcett as well as grandchildren Julie (troy), Todd, Trevor (Lori-Anne), Amy, Ryan, Brendan, Lisa, Tanis and Shayne. Great-grandchildren are Kalysta, Treya and Ainsley. George was predeceased by his parents Stanley and Treva Cockroft and stepmother Effie Cockroft and brothers Donald and Terry. George was born on June 22, 1924 in Winnipeg and resided there most of his life. He enjoyed living in Selkirk for seven years at Woodland Courts. he then moved back to an apartment in Winnipeg where he lived until September 2007. George served in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion in Winnipeg and he also enjoyed visiting the Legion in Selkik. He worked for 25 years as an insurance adjustor for Enderton's. He also worked at Flourescent Sales Service and finished his working career at Brook Bond Foods. George loved to read and was always ready for a game of cribbage. he enjoyed collecting stamps as well as traveling on the open road whenever he had the opportunity. He enjoyed trips to pet stores so he could choose more fish for his fish tank. He like to keep up with current affairs by reading the Free Press and the Winnipeg Sun. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held in the chapel of Voyage Funeral Home, 220 Hespeler Ave on Saturday, March 1, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. with a reception to follow.

KELLY, Ralph Alden - 91, of Milton, Queens County passed away peacefully in Queens General Hospital on Wednesday, August 6, 2014. Born in Cobalt, Ont., he was a son of the late Bernard and Gladys (MacKenzie) Kelly. Ralph was a veteran of the Second World War serving with the Merchant Navy and the Royal Canadian Navy in the North Atlantic. He received the 1939 – 1945 Star with France and Germany clasps, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and clasp and the War Medal 1939 -1945. He was a former employee with Bowater Mersey Paper Company Limited, retiring after 35 years as papermaker. He enjoyed tole painting and gardening in his spare time. He was a member of the Mersey Branch # 38, Royal Canadian Legion, Liverpool. He is survived by his daughters Bonnie (Ron) desRosier of Edmonton, AB, Catherine Hobin (Renauld Francoeur) of Halifax, Sue Ann (Ralph) Ballard of Lower Sackville, his sons Bill (Tammy) of Bedford, David (Tanya) of Milton, Jim (Annette) of Bridgewater. 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, sister Patricia Rawlings of Sarnia, Ont. He was predeceased by his first wife of forty-nine years Patricia (Waddleton), his second wife Donna Raynard, an infant sister and his brother John “Jack”. BOYD, Bradley G. - Passed away peacefully at the Halifax Infirmary, on February 13, 2014, at the age of 78. He was the sole survivor of his immediate family. He was born March 10, 1935, in Philadelphia, USA, where he resided until the age of seven years, when his father passed away. Then moved to Toronto, where he grew up, and attended Lakefield College "The Grove School" for two years. He joined the Navy in 1953, retiring in 1982. During that time he served on many ships, and bases. He also coached competitive swimming with the Shearwater Bluefin's, Dartmouth Crusaders, and the Cornwallis Stingrays. Upon his retirement from the Armed Forces, he was employed with Canadian Marconi, Coldwell Enterprises and as a Commissionaire for two years. He was also very involved with the Knights of Columbus for 25 years, becoming the Grand Knight of West Chezzetcook Council # 9093, and the Digby Council #5296, and the District Deputy of Zone 6 for 3 years. He was a 4th Degree Knight and involved in all of their activities as well. When he moved to the valley in 1997, he became involved with the local Legion Branch # 21, working his way up through executive Offices to become President for 3 years. He also served as the Sgt at Arms of Branch and Zone 9 for three years. During this time he also did volunteer work at the RCMP Cornwallis office as their 1st manager, and continued on as an Office rep until His demise. In his later years, he enjoyed travelling to his trailer in Florida with his partner, spending time in the park, at the beach, and visiting the surrounding area. He is survived by his loving companion Marilyn Halliday; four children, Daniel, Carol French (Vince), Dareena Mac Donnell, and Bradley (Hidee); four grandsons, Daniel, James, Matthew and Jason; four stepchildren, many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Marguerite and Kenneth; sister, Beverly, his Irish wife, Celine; son, James Bradley; granddaughter Kaleigh French. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of the Kaulbach Family Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Annapolis Royal. FOWLER, Daniel - of Moncton passed away at the Moncton Hospital on February 5th, 2014 at the age of 78. Born in Moncton, NB on October 22nd, 1935, he was the youngest son of the late Edward and Vera Marjorie (Bell). Daniel is survived by his loving wife Phyllis (Wilson) of 58 years, children, Shane (Rita), Sharon Wells (Ralph), and Terry. Grandchildren, Leslie Lepage (Mike), Bradley Fowler, Melissa, John, Daniel Wells (Holly Hamilton), Brennan and Daniel Fowler, great grandchildren, Coralie Lepage and Christopher Wells, and brother Donnie (Frances). Aside from his parents, Daniel is predeceased by his brothers, Jack and Bill. Daniel began his career with the Canadian Navy and then worked as an air traffic controller until his retirement with 35 years of dedicated service. With his love of hunting and salmon fishing, upon his retirement he and Phyllis began their joint venture, Nash Bar Lodge on the Miramichi for a period of 10 years. With over 50 years as a guide, his guests included Lee Wulf and many others. Community was important to him and was shown through his support to the Sunny Brae Legion where he was a member for over 50 years, Young At Heart Seniors Club, Past President and Life member of the New Brunswick Wildlife Federation, the Moncton Fish & Game Assoc., and the St. Anthony Snowmobile Club. BROWN, Gordon Hibbert, CD (15 Oct 1934 - 15 Mar 2013) - age78, Dartmouth, passed away heroically in the late evening of March 14, 2013 at the Halifax Infirmary Hospital, Halifax. He was Born in Summerville, Hants County, Nova Scotia, Gordon grew up in Windsor and his adventurous life style led him from one coast of Canada to another as a proud member of Canada’s Armed Forces (Navy) for 28 years followed by 10 years in the Beaufort Sea on supply vessels for Dome Petroleum, before entering retirement. He was also a serving member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 24 and the Admiral Desmond Piers Naval Association Bridgewater. He married his partner in love and life, Alice (Murphy) Brown. Together they raised two wonderful sons and one beautiful daughter and in turn, perfected the art of spoiling six wonderful grandchildren. Gordon’s passions were country living, and he was a jack of all trades and self professed, “Master of None“. He loved “kicking arse” in card and board games. Gordon loved his time with friends and family and always looked forward to seeing them. Quick to strike up a conversation with a stranger he was always making new acquaintances while keeping the old friendships alive. He was a funny, warm-hearted, giving and forgiving man. Gordon will forever live on in the hearts of everyone who knew him, and his great jokes and laughs. Gordon is survived by his wife of 54 years of marriage, Alice (Murphy) Brown, proud sons, Tony Brown, Wayne Brown (Lynn Blackstock) and daughter Prudence (John) Kennedy; loving grandchildren Melissa (Dermaid) Fitzgerald, Tyler (Amanda) Brown, Kayleigh (Ryan) Conrad, Chelsea (Chris) Coffin, Joshua Kennedy, Breagh Brown and six great-grandchildren and many, In-laws, nieces and nephews. HUNTER, John James, CPO1 (1932-2012) - 80, Halifax, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Monday, November 19, 2012 in the VG Site, QEII. Born in Orillia, ON he was a son of the late James and Helen (Skelly) Hunter. John proudly served for 25 years with the Royal Canadian Navy, finishing his career as a Chief Petty Officer 1st Class. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, who will be dearly missed. SCOTT, James Edward (Scotty), CPO2, CD - 79, of Riversdale, Queens County, passed away October 3rd, 2012 at South Shore Regional Hospital, in Bridgewater. Born in Niagara Falls, ON. He was the son of the late James and Margaret (Kerr) Scott. Scotty served in the Royal Canadian Navy for 28 years on various ships; the “Skeena”, the “Cape Scott”, the “Protecteur” and the “Maggie” to name a few. Scotty made many wonderful friends during his naval career and travelled all over the world. He will be sadly missed. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #24, Bridgewater. Scotty had a great love of the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and deer hunter. He also had a special place in his heart for life on the Medway River where he enjoyed his retirement days with the love of his life, Judy. Scotty is survived by his wife, the former Judith Chiasson from Cheticamp, His brother John Scott of Thorold, ON., step- son Michel (Moira) Chiasson; grandchildren Catherine, Allan and Molly, all of Cheticamp, Cape Breton. RODGER, Robert (Scottie) - 80, of Liverpool, Queens County, passed away on Thursday, March 22nd, 2012, in the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in Largs Ayrshire, Scotland, he was a son of the late George and Mary (Fraser) Rodger. Scottie was Veteran of the Korean War, having served 25 years in the Royal Canadian Navy, where his main job was running the boilers on the ship. Retiring from the Navy in 1975, he moved to Liverpool to become the maintenance man for the local school district, working there for several years before finally going to work at the Queens Manor, Liverpool, also in the maintenance department. He was a member of St. Gregory’s Catholic Church, Liverpool, the Admiral Desmond Piers Naval Association and he was the current president of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #38, Liverpool. Scotty recently received a Meritorious Service Medal for outstanding service to the Royal Canadian Legion and to the community. During his many years with the Legion Scottie enjoyed going to the local schools to talk to the children about the importance of Remembrance Day Activities. Over the years Scottie was very active volunteering in the Liverpool Minor Hockey Association and he also spent many seasons as the manager for the old Liverpool Schooners Fastball Team. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. CASEY, James Alfred (Al), C1ST, 51755-H, RCN (served 17 Jul 1947 - 13 Nov 1971) - Bedford, aged 82, died peacefully in QEII Health Sciences Centre on august 29th, 2011. Born in North Bay, Ont., he was a son of the late Joseph and Doris (Ward) Casey. He joined the RCN in 1947 and served for 25 years, retiring as a CPO1. Following retirement, Al established Alberni Camper Products, which he operated for several years. He was a past president of the Royal Canadian Legion, Dieppe, No. 90, Waverley, and a recipient of the Meritorious Service Award. He was a past Master of the Masonic Order, John Albro Lodge, and an active and faithful member of Wellington United Church. In recognition of his dedication and service to the community, he was awarded the Queen's Jubilee Medal. Survived by his wife of 62 years, Mildred (Ross); son, Ross (Linda); grandchildren, Carly (John) Sutherland, Joel, and David; great-grandsons, Callum and Henry Sutherland; sisters, Charlene (Paul) Schroder and Orean. RUTH, Cyril Clayton (Cy), CPO - 78, of Hammond Plains, passed away October 17, 2010, at home. Born May 5, 1932, in Summerside, NL, he was the son of the late Frederic and Gertrude Ruth. He was predeceased by sisters Lorraine Brake, Mary Hann, Sylvia O'Brien, Buelah Eddy, Audrey Hiscock and a brother Glenn Ruth. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy as a Radar Technician for 25 years and retired in 1975 as a Chief Petty Officer. He served in the Korean War from 1951-1952. Following retirement he worked for the Department of Transportation as a Traffic Controller for 18 years and retired in 1993. he sailed on several ships and traveled most of the world. He dearly loved life in the Navy especially when he was at sea. He was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, The Shriners and the Knights Templar. His passion was his dog "Goldie" He is survived by sisters Faye (Paul Davis), Newfoundland; Carmellia Wheeler, Newfoundland; Avril Gardiner, Vancouver; Margaret (John Bader), Vancouver and brother, Wayne (Ann), Newfoundland; children, Barry, Brad, Kevin, Kenny and Beverly; special niece, Sherry-Lynn Davis; stepdaughter, Donna (Gary Kirby); special friends, Deloris Birch and Louise Burbridge and many nieces and nephews. GRAY, William Thomas (Bill) - 86, of Yarmouth, passed away August 3, 2010 in the QEII, Halifax Infirmary. Born on July 2, 1924 in London, Ontario, he was the son of the late Thomas and Ellen Gray. Bill was a veteran of the Second World War serving in the Royal Canadian Navy. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 61, where he was serving as Second Vice-President. He was also a member of the Desmond Piers Naval Association in Bridgewater and the Chief Petty Officers Club in Halifax. Bill loved the sea, and had also worked for the Canadian Coast Guard. He is survived by wife, Elsie (Rines) Gray; daughters, Ida Frotten, Yarmouth; Lili Muise, Raynardton; Leona (Wayne) Smith, Kelly’s Cove; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. George Joined the Canadian Navy in 1950 and very proudly served his country for over 27 years, retiring in 1977. During those years, he served on HMCS Haida (in Korea), Huron, Magnificent, Iroquois, Restigouche and Terra Nova. After leaving the navy, he worked for Canada Post. George was a member of the Atlantic Chiefs & Petty Officers Association, Korean Veterans Association of Canada, Vice President of the HMCS Haida Association, and Past President of the Canadian Tribal Destroyer Association. He was particularly pleased to have been chosen to represent his mates in Korea in April 2010, in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Korean War. George was an ardent genealogist, hunter and camper as well as a distinguished member of the Department of natural Resources' Campground Host Program. Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 29, at 2 p.m. in Bedford United Church, 1200 Bedford Highway, with Rev. David Hart and Padre Patricia Malin officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Private burial will take place following the reception. CHALMERS, John David (Dave) (1930 - 2016) - This world lost a kind, loving and sweet man on April 16. After a full and happy life, surrounded by family, Dave finally said goodbye in his 86th year. Teacher, father, engineer, student, scout leader, naval officer, husband, grandfather. Born at home in Timmins, Ontario in 1930 in a company house to Robert and Christine Chalmers. Dave grew up in northern Ontario learning to ski, study, and participating in Sea Cadets. Dave went on to an outstanding academic career graduating from Royal Roads (1951), Royal Military College (1953), and University of Toronto in Electrical Engineering (1954). Later Dave graduated in 1972 in one of the first classes of the executive MBA program at Simon Fraser University. Dave met Elizabeth in Victoria at age 19 and they married in 1954, then raised three sons. The two were married for 62 years. He is survived by his three sons, five grandchildren, his sister Christine, and two daughters-in-law, all of whom he was immensely proud of and loved dearly. He enjoyed his work as an engineer and manager in both the oil distribution industry and B.C.s forest industry working with MacMillan Bloedel on the coast for 25 years. Dave was a volunteer with Scouts Canada as a troop leader and later district committee member for almost 40 years. Dave had many lifelong friends from his service in the Canadian Service Colleges, Naval Reserve (1954-1959), and his work in the forest industry. MUNRO, James Armstrong (10 Oct 1929 - 21 Nov 2016) - It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Jim Munro, founder of the iconic bookstore, Munro's Books, who died suddenly at his home in Victoria BC, on Monday, November 21st, he was 87 years old. The son of Arthur and Margaret, Jim was born in Oakville, Ontario, the eldest of four children. After graduating from the University of Western Ontario in 1951, he married Alice Laidlaw. The couple moved to Vancouver, BC, where they had two daughters, and for 12 years he worked at the T. Eaton Company. In 1963 the family moved to Victoria, where, with Alice's help, Jim was able to realize his long held dream of opening a bookstore. Soon they had another daughter. Jim worked tirelessly to build the business and created a mecca for book lovers. He was also a strong supporter of his wife Alice Munro's writing career. After their divorce, he married artist Carole Sabiston. In 1984 he "bought the bank", a heritage Royal Bank building, for his greatly expanded enterprise. Over the years, the store drew international attention as one of the world's best and most beautiful bookstores. Jim nurtured and enthusiastically promoted many writers over his long career, and found innovative ways to reward his loyal staff. He loved all the arts, was a founder of Pacific Opera Victoria and spearheaded several heritage and beautification projects in the city he loved so well. He hosted countless literary events and enriched Victoria's cultural life immeasurably. He received many honours over the years culminating in the order of Canada in 2014. Though he loved grandeur and took great pride in his legacy, Jim was at heart a kind and generous soul who wanted the spotlight to shine on others. He had a ready smile and was a lively presence, affable, opinionated, and always up for a good discussion. Jim will be sorely missed by his wife Carole, his sisters Barbara and Margaret, his daughters Sheila, Jenny (David) and Andrea, stepson Andrew (Stephanie), and his grandchildren James, Thomas, Oliver, Chloe and Felix. A celebration of his life will be held at the Alix Goolden Hall on Monday, February 20th at 3:00 pm. Donations in Jim's name may be made to the Times Colonist Christmas Fund. MacFARLANE, George Richard, Cdr, RCN - Born: 30 Jan 1922, Edmonton, AB, Died; 17 Jan 2000, VIctoria, BC. He served in tugboats on the west coast as a Mate before the Second World War. He was elected as an Alderman of Central Saanich BC for 14 years after retirement. He was qualified to command a frigate or destroyer. He carried the King's Colour in the Royal Guard for Princess Elizabeth during the Royal Visit of 1951. He was the Commander of Royal Guard for Princess Margaret during Royal Visit of 1958. He was the Commander of the Parade for Queen Elizabeth II in Victoria in 1959. He was appointed as Trustee of the Maritime Museum of British Columbia 1959. He held a Master Mariner's Certificate of Service (Foreign Going). He operated a market garden in Central Saanich from 1972 to 1992.

DYER, William Roberton - 82 of Liverpool, Queens County, passed away peacefully in Queens General Hospital, Liverpool on December 2, 2016 with his wife and family at his side. Bob, as he was called by those who knew him, was born on July 19, 1934 in Montreal, Quebec, to the late William and Phoebe (Wright) Dyer. He is survived by his wife Gail (Lewis) of 58 years, his three sons, Mark (Bernice) of Edmonton, AB; Bruce (Shawn) of Maple Ridge, BC; William Jr. of Edmonton, AB; his daughter Cindy of Halifax, NS; his grandsons Nathan and Timothy; his grand daughters Lisa, Kimberly and Kaitlyn; and his great granddaughter, Hayden. He is also survived by his sister Carol Karagheusian of Maple Ridge, BC. He was predeceased by his brother Albert Dyer. In 1953, Bob began a lifetime of adventure when he sailed around the world while serving as a radio operator with the Royal Canadian Navy aboard the HMCS Haida. After marrying in Montreal in 1958, Bob and Gail made their first home in Greenwood, NS where he was serving with the RCAF. A year later, they were off to Whitehorse, NWT before Bob began a 30 year career with Environment Canada in Goose Bay, Labrador. His work eventually took him to Montreal, Toronto, and Edmonton, where he retired in 1986. Bob never managed to stay in one place very long. Shortly after retiring, he and Gail spent a number of years doing volunteer work in California, Ontario, Mexico, Poland, Germany and Israel. After surviving a serious illness in early 2007, Bob determined there was yet time for one more adventure. He said, “Gail, let’s move back to Nova Scotia!” Several months later, he and Gail moved into his final home across from Fort Point Park in Liverpool. Warmly embraced by their new community, they were eager to give back. In addition to being a proud member of Kiwanis, Bob volunteered his time with the Hospital gift shop, the Queens Manor, the Gideon Bible Society and his local church congregation. He will be missed! A memorial service for Bob will be held at 10 AM on Tuesday December 6, 2016 at Brooklyn Baptist Church, 35 Shore Road in Brooklyn. Reception will follow. SHIMANSKY, John Thomas - Passed away on December. 4, 2016 at the Welland Hospital Site surrounded by his loving family. John was born October 30, 1946 to Fred and Jennie Shimanski. He lived his childhood years with his sisters Marlene and Sharon and cousin Shirley Beck in the Mathews School neighbourhood , where he made so many life-long friends. After he graduated from Eastdale Secondary School he joined the Canadian Navy and served on the HMCS Kootney in Halifax for eight years. To this day, Dinger and his shipmates call him “Sam”. He has been a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #4 for the past 30 years. The call of his hometown brought him back to live out his remaining years in Welland. As fate would have it, John fell in love with Victoria Yarema and her children Asia and Jessica, so they built a life together. As the years passed another miracle blessed John when his daughter Vanessa found him after years of searching and became a loving part of their family. John volunteered for the Southend Neighbourhood Committee coaching children’s co-ed baseball for many years. He enjoyed annual fishing trips over the last 25 years in Foleyet Ontario with his fishing buddies, including his brothers-in-law, Freddie and Steve. What stories they could tell! John enjoyed playing poker, betting horse races, playing golf and was an avid fan of the Oakland Raiders football team. He spent many vacations enjoying the hot weather in Mexico. What was most important to John was family and he always prayed to the Angels to watch over his children. A devoted “Papa” who never missed the chance to spend time with his grandchildren, whether it was camping, going on outings with Annabell, attending Brodie’s hockey games or Nyla’s gymnastics competitions. Prior to each event Papa would tell Nyla to “stick it” as an encouragement for her amazing success. His hockey advice for Brodie was “the NHL wants play makers that can pass the puck and score not just players that can score”. His youngest grand-children, Lauren, Kylee and Kaleb were the apple of this eye. And so it is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of this wonderful person who will be missed by his loving spouse, Victoria (aka My Rock); his children and their families – Vanessa Shimansky (Brian Jones), Annabell and Kaleb; Asia and Chauncey Morabito, Brodie and Nyla; Jessica and Taylor Letwin, Lauren and Kylee. John was a devoted and loving member of the whole Mester family including Les and Irene Mester and the families of Leslie & John, Steve and Joline, Fred and Linda, and Greg and Gayle. Respecting John’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will be held on Monday, December 12, 2016 at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #4, Morningstar Avenue, Welland from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. ROSS, Charles Alexander, Lt, RCNVR, killed - 23 Sep 1943 - HMCS ST CROIX - a gifted young man, joined HMCS St. Croix in September 1943. Ross attended McGill University in Montreal, receiving a B.A. and a Master's degree in economics. He then worked with the Royal Bank of Canada's Foreign Exchange Branch and with the Allied War Supply Corporation, which administered the Canadian government's chemicals and explosives program. Enlisting in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve, Ross trained at HMCS Kings, the navy's officer training establishment in Halifax, and served on its staff prior to joining the St. Croix. KING, William Lyon MacKenzie Surg-Lt, RCNVR, killed - 23 Sep 1943 HMCS ST CROIX - William Lyon Mackenzie King, an accomplished surgeon, and the nephew and namesake of Canada's wartime prime minister, was among those lost with HMCS St. Croix. King had joined the Royal Canadian Navy in June 1942 and figured prominently in newspaper reports of the St. Croix's sinking. In this photograph, he wears the wavy stripes of a lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve on his uniform jacket. SCRIVEN, Rodger James - 63, of Cole Harbour, died Tuesday, March 8, 2011, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Belleville, Ont., he was a son of the late James Arthur and Ethel Grace (Rodgers) Scriven. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy for over 23 years including eight years as a submariner. He was involved with many activities including teaching martial arts, coaching youth softball and operating ham radios. He was a family man who loved his children and especially his grandchildren. He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, the former Marian McKay; daughters, Angela and Tabitha, both of Cole Harbour; son, David, Ontario; brother, Paul, Madoc, Ont.; grandchildren, Rodger (RJ) and Melissa, both of Cole Harbour and many nieces and nephews. Rear-Admiral Murray was an officer of the Royal Canadian Navy who played a significant role in the Battle of the Atlantic. He commanded the Newfoundland Escort Force from 1941–1943, and from 1943 to the end of the war was Commander-in-Chief, Canadian Northwest Atlantic. He was the only Canadian to command an Allied theatre of operations during World War I or World War II.

ATHERTON, Ernest (09 Jul 1924 - 09 Oct 2016) - was born into a humble coal mining family that included 5 brothers and 3 sisters in Coal Creek, BC. He joined the Navy in WWII and specialized as a submarine hunter in the North Atlantic. After the war he married Doreen Browning and left active service for the DND beginning as a bus driver and working his way up to an instructor. He had three children, Arlene, Bruce and Lois to raise and he devoted himself ardently to the task. He somehow found the time to build a full cabin on Cowichan Lake where friends and family spent many happy times together. For a time Ernie and Doreen retired to the lake where they continued to fish and hike the area all the while reminiscing about all the fun they'd had. They eventually moved back to Victoria where they continued to be surrounded by a growing family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ever the prankster with a huge heart, Ernie was loved by everyone and much sought after for advice and support. His sense of humour was exceeded only by his depth of caring. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him, most especially by his family. Ernie passed away in comfort at the Broadmead Lodge in Victoria, BC. Doreen and Ernie leave their children Arlene (Ken) Neal, Bruce (Linda) Atherton, Lois (Pat) Higgins, 8 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren to treasure in so many memories. BROPHY, Thomas - The family of Tom Brophy announce his passing on December 3, 2016. He was born in Saskatoon on January 15, 1931. He attended St. Mary's School and Tech Collegiate. After school, he spent three and a half years in the navy. He then spent most of his working career with the Saskatoon Fire Department. After retiring from the fire department, he was a private contractor for various insurance companies. Tom was also a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his loving family; wife, Del; sons, Bob (Kelly), Don; grandchildren, Christine (Travis Horne), Mike (Shanna), Tara and Erin Brophy; great-grandchildren, Nick and Kaitlynn Brophy, Lochlan and Amelia Horne; sisters, Sheron (Clare) Usselman, Dorothy Usselman; sister-in-law, Adele Brophy and many nieces, nephews and extended family. He was predeceased by his son, Wally (Anne); parents, Edward and Marie-Ange Brophy; brothers, Eddie and Tony. Prayers will be held on Wednesday, December 7 at 7:00 p.m. Presiding will be Ethna Martin. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, December 8 at 10:30 a.m. The Celebrant will be Rev.
