FRANK, John Frederick, Cdr (E) - passed away peacefully at the Ottawa Civic Hospital on Thursday, June 29, 2017. John was born in Picton, Ontario, and grew up in Peterborough, Ontario where he attended Peterborough Collegiate and Vocational School, graduating in 1942. He then joined the Royal Canadian Navy as a cadet. Two years later after graduation from the Royal Canadian Naval College he was sent to the Royal Naval Engineering College in Devonport, England followed by two years of post graduate studies in aeronautical engineering at the College of Aeronautics (Cranfield), where he earned an MSc degree. During the 1960's he became actively interested in the Canadian Military Colleges and was invited to the board of the Royal Military College Club of Canada where he was elected President in 1967. He later served on DND's Advisory Board for Military colleges. After retirement from the navy in 1963, he joined the Printing Industry; first in sales of printing machinery, then in the manufacture of Business Forms. In 1990 he retired after 24 years with R.L. Crain Ltd. in Ottawa, having been Vice President of Manufacturing, President, and ultimately Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer. Though involved in a host of sporting activities throughout his life including fishing, canoeing, camping, hockey, basketball and rugby, he enjoyed golf the most. He was an ardent and competitive "B" class player until he suffered a stroke in the summer of 2007. For over forty years he had been a dedicated and proud member of the Royal Ottawa Golf Club, had been invested as a Life-Member, had served on the Board for many years, and was Club President in 1975. John was predeceased, in 2011, by his wife of 65 years, Joan, and is survived by his sons Christopher (Nancy) and Timothy (Wendy), daughter Deborah (Hugh Campbell), grandchildren Graham (Andrea), Elizabeth (Cory), Kathleen and Olivia, and five great-grandchildren. They were his pride and his joy. He lived his life at one speed…"full ahead", and navigated this mortal coil with the use of a moral compass that never failed him, his family, or his friends. He was truly one-of-a-kind; we shall all miss him. The family will welcome friends for a celebration of John's life, 1400 hours Monday, July 10, 2017 at the Royal Ottawa Golf Club, 1405 Aylmer Road, Gatineau, QC. HUDSON, Edward - After a prolonged illness, it is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Edward "Ed" Frank Hudson, July 5, 2017, after very recently celebrating his 92nd birthday. Married for 61 years, Ed was a devoted husband to Doris (Weiler) and loving father to Jeff (Leslie Ann), Jill (Joe), Anne, Ed and Tracy (Steve); beloved grandfather to Kaylea (Lucas), Jamie (Tom), Matthew, Lauren, Stephanie, Lindsay and Ryan; and great-grandfather to Henry, Charlie and Phoebe. Ed is survived by many nieces and nephews, neighbours and friends. Born in Cobourg, Ontario, Ed served in the Royal Canadian Navy before eventually settling in Toronto. He was a career newspaperman who held managerial positions in sales at both The Toronto Telegram and The Toronto Star. Ed was an enthusiastic member of Gyro International, a founding member of St. Clement's Parish, where he actively served for almost 50 years and a keen world traveller. Above all else, Ed was a fiercely proud family man. He was predeceased by his parents, Sydney Walter and Winnifred Ruth and his two siblings - Irene (McMahon) and Sydney. McGIBBON, Roy Davidson - At Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, at the age of 94, on July 7, 2017. Served in the Canadian Navy in WWII, then following the war joined the Toronto Fire Department. Retired from the fire department after a 39-year career, retiring as District Chief. He enjoyed fishing, golf and tennis. Survived by his loving wife Madeline, his daughter Patricia (Jim) Tucker, daughter-in-law Nancy McGibbon and seven grandchildren Mark ("Pina"), Karen (James), Christie (Brian), Jeff, Brad (Carol), Jennifer, Mike and great-granddaughter Olivia. RICHARDSON, Frederick E. (11 Nov 1925 - 02 Jul 2017) -passed away peacefully, July 2 at Royal Jubilee hospital with his family by his side. Born in Victoria in 1925 he was predeceased by his father Fred and mother Letty. He is survived by his wife Pat of 67 years, children David, Jannine, Sandra, Julie and his sister Patsy. Fred loved his family. He had six grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Fred graduated from Oak Bay High before joining the navy during the second world war. Following in his grandfather's footsteps he represented Canada as the youngest team member to shoot at Bisley, England, in 1950. Upon returning he joined the 5th Battery Field Artillery rising to the rank of Major and Commanding Officer. He worked for Victoria Box and Paper for 35 years and lived in both Fairfield and Cordova Bay. In his retirement Fred was the owner of the Canadian Christmas Cracker Company, making and selling thousands of crackers over the years. Fred was a quiet gentle man who curled and loved cars, from his Model A and 55 Chevy Bel air to his 56 T-Bird which he lovingly restored. TILLETT, Eric - age 87 of White Rock BC formerly of Halifax. Passed away February 2, 2017 Peace Arch Hospital in BC. Born 1929 in Ipswich, England he was the son of the late Lee Webb. Eric served in the Royal Navy and the Royal Canadian Navy serving in HMCS Shearwater and Ottawa. After retiring from the Navy he was employed with National Steel Car in Hamilton. Eric is survived by daughter, Dianne; son Kenneth; grandchildren, Adam and Kevin. He was predeceased his wife, Doreen. Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held 11am, Thursday July 13th, in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens 767 Main Street, Dartmouth.

CORMIER, Joseph P. (1923-2017) - age 94 of Shubenacadie passed away peacefully on July 6, 2017 at Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building, Halifax. Born in Belle Cote, Inverness County, he was a son of the late John and Mary Ann (Doucet) Cormier. As a young man, Joe enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy and saw active duty on the mine sweeper HMCS Bayfield during the Second World War. He started off his career working for the National Gypsum in Dingwall, moving to Milford in the early 1950’s. He and wife Lucy settled in Shubenacadie and together they raised their nine boys. Joseph was a self-employed electrician, establishing Cormier and Sons Electric. His hobbies were fishing and collecting antiques. He was a long-standing member of the St. Bridget’s Parish and a 58 year member of the Shubenacadie Royal Canadian Legion. He is survived by the love of his life Lucy (Maillet); sons, Lionel, Arthur (Colleen), Emile, Cecil, Gerald (Armeli), Jojo (Karen), Robert, Victor (Ellen) and Richard (Lisa); grandchildren, Alana, Bradley, Shawn, Mandy, Josiah, Aimee, Rebekah, Nicole, Alexander, Kaleigh and Mary; great grandchildren, Riley, Jack and Addie. He was predeceased by sister Jeannette Brodie and brothers Edward and Victor. A Legion Memorial Service will be held at 2pm Sunday, July 9, followed by a visitation until 4pm in Ettinger Funeral Home, 2812 Highway 2, Shubenacadie. MacDONALD, John Lewis (Skipper) - age 74, of Halifax. Devoted father, grandfather and brother. Affectionately known as 'Skipper' by those closest to him, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 27, 2017, in Camp Hill Veterans’ Memorial Building, QEII, with his family by his side. He was born on April 5, 1943, son of the late John Lewis MacDonald and Kathleen (Flemming) MacDonald (of Port Hood). He was predeceased by his brother, Joe. He is survived by his sons, Blair (Janet), David (Carolin); his daughter, Pamela; his grandchildren, Lorenz, Bradley, Ciara, Lyla, Ayden, Benjamin; step grandson, Nicholas; brothers, Tommy (Adeline), Charlie (Marie Claire), Sam (Hannah); sisters, Elaine Tyler (Stuart), Louise Campbell (Bill), Evonne Bishop (Jack), Catherine Landry (Ron), and cherished companion, Vina Seaman. He served in the RCN for 25 years and Canada Post for 12 years before his retirement. He enjoyed socializing and playing darts at the Chiefs and POs Mess, but his favourite pastime was spending time with friends and family at his cottage on Lake Mush a Mush. SPICER, Robert (Bob), Sgt, RCAF / Lt (N) (LD), RCN / Capt (C.I.L.) - passed away peacefully on July 5, 2017, in the VG Site, QEII, Halifax. Born July 17, 1925 in Wiarton, Ont., Bob was a son of the late Robert and Edith (Cole) Spicer. He was predeceased by his much-loved and cherished wife, Ivey Roberta (Beck). He was the most awesome Dad and hero to his four children and their spouses: Roberta (Ken Lane), Robert (Kelly Spicer), Ivey (David Fennell), Doctor Tara Spicer (Norm Holmes). Exceedingly proud Grampa to his wonderful grandchildren, Taryn, Tiffany and Erin, Megan and Deidre, Laurel and Richie; and to his 12 wonderful great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister, Amy Laurine; brothers, Basil West, Jerrold and John Henry. Survived by brothers and sisters: Lorne, Edith, Betty, Marie, Ruth and Richard. Dad joined the RCAF in January 1943 and served overseas during the Second World War, flying Harvards until his discharge in August 1945 with the rank of Sgt. He re-enlisted with the RCN in October 1945 and proceeded through the ranks, ultimately getting his commission to Captain (N) in 1964. HMCS Magnificent and Shearwater are just two of the units that Dad served with, and he took great delight in having the distinction of being able to say he flew on the first and last Trackers with the Navy. He spent time with VX10 and VU33 as well as serving as Staff Officer at HMCS Star and Niagara Sea Cadet Corp. Dad retired from the military in July of 1977. He then went on to serve as a Postal letter carrier and a Commissionaire until 2000. Dad was an avid supporter of his kids and spent many hours as an official at swim meets, chauffeuring his brood and others to swim meets, baseball, and dance recitals over the years. Brownies and guides loved to do their cooking badges for Mr. Spicer, and they always got thumbs up and a delicious review as he signed their papers. Dad and Mom loved square dancing, dog training and geocaching, with dad picking up his last geocache at the young age of 90! Bob and Ivey were a dynamic duo and, as kids, we always knew we were supported in everything that we did or tried. Dad leaves a legacy to us of hope and determination, and these wise words, 'Don’t look for trouble!' We won’t, Dad. Bravo Zulu! A private burial will be held at a later date in Oakridge Memorial Gardens.

SIRCOM, George Robert Churchill (Bob), Lt (S), RCNR - age 88, of Wolfville. Died peacefully on July 4, 2017, in Valley Regional Hospital. Dearly loved husband of Hilary (Eason). Father of Elizabeth (Arnaud Béghin), Hantsport; Katharine, Lockhartville; Gillian (Marc-André Tremblay), Chester Basin. Predeceased by daughter, Margaret, in 2011 (Andrew Brown - Christy Ann Conlin). Grandfather of Charlemagne, Sophie and Ivan Tremblay, Mowbray Béghin, Milo and Angus Sircom-Brown and Silas Conlin-Morse. Predeceased by sisters, Kaye McMillan and Joyce Andrew. Bob was born in Halifax to George Sircom and Ethel (Kane) Sircom. He received his education at Rothsay Collegiate School, Royal Roads Naval College and Queen’s University. He was a midshipman on HMCS Magnificent and served in the Naval Reserve as a Lieutenant. Bob worked as an Assistant Personnel Superintendent at Fundy Gypsum Company for four years before, in 1964, becoming head of the newly-formed Employee Relations Department at Minas Basin Pulp and Power Co. Ltd., and Canadian Keyes Fibre Co. in Hantsport. In 1989, he was appointed Vice President, Human Resources, CKF. He served as Chairman of the Halifax District Personnel Association and of the Human Resource Section of the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association. Bob lived with his family for 41 years in Hantsport, where he took an active part in the community. He served as Church Warden at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church and as President of the Hantsport Memorial Community Centre. He was an officer of the Navy League Cadet Corps and a life member of the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron. After retiring in 1992, Bob enjoyed many good years when he and Hilary traveled extensively, and, in the summers, enjoyed their cottage in Chester Basin surrounded by family, friends and dogs. He was never happier than when he was at the helm of his boat 'Hebe', sailing the waters of Mahone Bay. He and his wife moved to Wolfville in 2008. Sadly, in his later years, he suffered from dementia, but he always kept his dignity and a sense of humour. We wish to thank the caregivers, church congregation and the many members of the community who have shown such consideration and kindness towards Bob and the family. Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held in St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Hantsport, on Friday, July 7, at 2 p.m., Rev. David Curry officiating. SMITH, Neil Stewart Douglas (1933-2017) - On June 23, 2017, Neil completed his journey here to embark on a new one. Born in Halifax to the late Harold and Violet (Tibbo) Smith. He spent 25 years in the RCN, where he got to see many parts of the world. Neil was a man who loved life, people. animals, and showed unconditional love to his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Audrey (Boyce), who was by his side right to the end; by daughter, Denice Smith; sons, Michael (Marlene); Paul (Tracey); Craig (Katrina); Jason; Keith; 17 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren and sister, Victoria McInnis. HURFORD, George Oscar S. (Mike), Cdr (MARS), RCN / C.A.F. - It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Husband, Father and Friend on Sunday July 9th, 2017 in the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Born in Verdun, Quebec he was the son of late Oscar F. and Marion (Sharples) Hurford. Mike served with the Royal Canadian Navy for 31 years, retiring as a Commander. After leaving the Navy he went to work with Unisys where he completed his working life. Mike and Sandy settled in Glencoe where they lived for 20 years. He was an active member of the Union #30 Oddfellows Lodge, also a member of Branch #34 Royal Canadian Legion and was a former Volunteer Fireman with East River Valley Fire Dept. Mike enjoyed the outdoors; fishing and hunting with his two sons, and was an avid gardener. He attended Springville and St. Paul’s Churches. Mike was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Surviving are his beloved wife of 51 years the former Sandy MacDonald. Sons: Kirk (Kim) of Abercrombie and Craig of Dartmouth. His fur babies Caber and Buddy. Cremation has taken place. The family will receive visitors from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday July 13th, 2017 in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, 256 King St., New Glasgow. CHUDYK, Eileen F., WRCNS (30 Apr 1925 - 23 Apr 2017) - Eileen Freeman Chudyk, age 91 passed away on Sunday, April 23rd, 2017 at the Lodge at Broadmead, her home for the last three years. She left the world, as she had lived, gently and with grace. She was born on April 30th, 1925 in Edmonton, Alberta to Helen (Freeman) and Dr. William "Bill" Hustler, the second of four children. During WWII, she served as a WREN telegrapher in Victoria, intercepting messages from the Japanese fleet. After the war, she married Albert "Bert" Chudyk, a navy veteran and they had two sons and a daughter. The young family moved to Victoria in '58. Eileen will be remembered fondly for her thirty years of operating Olinda Nursery School. She was well loved by children, parents and colleagues alike. Following Bert's death, she retired, and devoted her time to painting, sculpting and writing. She was a Spiritualist medium. She is survived by her three children, Bill, John, and Allison (Douglas-Tourner); siblings, Bill Hustler, Carol Dorrell, and Joan Fraser; grandchildren, Colin, Tom and Daniel Chudyk; and great-grandchildren Karen and James Chudyk. There will be a private family Celebration of Life. Donations to the Lodge at Broadmead will be gratefully accepted in Eileen's name in lieu of flowers.

CUSHING, Donald George (Cush) (17 Aug  1920, Cranbrook, BC - 28 May 2017, Calgary, AB) - After a full and exceptional life Don passed away on Sunday, May 28 in his cherished home at 96 years of age. His kind, generous, creative nature, quick wit and mental toughness endured him to his family, friends, and business associates. He was very social and highlights with his circle of great friends included boating trips (River Rats) and yearly West Coast fishing trips. His gang loved a good gag and never passed up an opportunity to dress up and perform. Don prided himself on being a "Rhodes" Scholar having attended the Cecil Rhodes Elementary School in Vancouver. Don's main passion in life was his beloved A.B. Cushing Mills which he took over from his father. A.B. Cushing Mills Ltd. operated in Calgary for well over 100 years. A skilled, creative craftsman in his own right he became President in 1971 of both A.B. Cushing Mills Ltd. Calgary and R.L. Cushing Millwork Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. He quickly rebuilt the company and established himself as a successful and forward thinking businessman. He remained active in the company with his daughter, Donna. He sold the company in 2014 shortly after her passing. Other passions in his life were his pet dogs and travelling. He served as a Chief Operating Officer in World War II with the Royal Canadian Navy. He was active in the Rotary Club and a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow and remained an honorary member. Don enjoyed his membership in the Calgary Golf and Country Club and volunteered for many years with the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede Board. Don is survived by his daughter, Linda (Don) Percival; son, Warren Cushing; grandchildren, Natalie (Kyle MacDonald) Percival, Ryland Percival; great- granddaughter, Ione MacDonald; stepdaughter, Selma (Rob) Nicol and first wife, Maria Hitchen. Don was predeceased by his wife, Patricia (West) and his daughter, Donna Cushing. At Don's request there will be no funeral services. A special thanks to Amanda, Levi, Jimema, Riza and Dr. Bretzky. HAYLEY, Dorothea (Dot), WRCNS (Wren) (25 Sep 1921 - 14 Jun 2017) - After a full and happy life, our beloved mother, Dorothea "Dot" Hayley, passed away peacefully at the age of 95. She was predeceased by her loving husband Al after 52 years of marriage. Deeply committed to her family, she remained a nurturing and devoted mother and grandmother. Despite battling several serious illnesses without complaint and with great fortitude, Mom maintained an enormous thirst for life and reminded her family that she was determined to "see the end of the story." She was an avid reader, a gifted pianist, and a woman with a tremendous sense of fashion. Our mother created a loving environment in our home, welcoming both friends and relatives with open arms. Special events were celebrated with great enthusiasm, delicious meals, and her signature themed decor. Mom was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and graduated from high school at the tender age of 15. She joined the WRENS in 1944, and became a naval wife in 1945. The military lifestyle caused her to travel across Canada several times, and all of her children were born in different provinces. In her mid- forties her inquiring mind led her to attend the University of Victoria, where she earned her teaching certificate. She remained a lifelong learner and a kind and trustworthy friend. In her later years, Mom joined the Royal Jubilee Hospital Auxiliary, where she enjoyed volunteering for decades. She leaves to mourn her four children: Audrey, Rod (Victoria), Susan (Mike) and Pam (Cliff), ten grandchildren: Christine, Rob, Alonna, Dory, Edmund, Stephen, Myles, Paul, Jamie, and Mark, and seven great-grandchildren: Harry, Audrey, Lauren, James, Robyn, Jack, and Marina. Mom was adamant that she remain in her own home and did so, until the final four months of her 95 year life. She received exceptionally patient and affectionate support from her devoted and loving care providers: Diana, Claudia, and especially Beate. Dot will always be lovingly remembered for her vivacity, generosity, and laughter. We will miss her indomitable spirit and unwavering devotion to family. A celebration of life will be held at St. Matthias Church in Victoria on Saturday, August 5th at 10:30 a.m. followed by a reception at the church hall. BELL, Joseph A., P2, 4339-E, RCN (served 02 Jun 1941 - 02 Jun 1966) (29 Jun 1922 - 27 Oct 1995) - Passed away at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital on October 27, 1995. He is survived by Beatrice, his loving wife of 50 years; son Gary (Karlene); grandson Robert and Sheryl, mother of Robert; and by his brothers, Jack, William (Cila), Frank (Mary); and many nieces and nephews. Joseph was born in Balcarres, Saskatchewan in 1922. He joined the RCN in 1941 and served Canada during the Second World War. he also served during the Korean conflict. he retired from the Navy after 25 years and went to work at Mount St. Marys and finally retiring again as head housekeeper at Saanich Peninsula Hospital. Joseph was a member of the Chiefs and Petty Officers Association and the Athabaskan Association (G07). He will be sadly missed by the many friends he has bade over the years. A memorial service will be held on November 2, 1995 at 2 p.m., at the Royal Canadian Legion - Pro Patria Branch, 411 Gorge Rd. East. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Saanich Peninsula Hospital.

Remembering Joe Bell - by Capt (Merchant Marine) Dave Tyre CPO1, RCN, ret'd

Joe Bell was my next door neighbour, twice. As you can see from the article (Man of the Month, Crowsnest August 1952) Joe was made a prisoner of war after being rescued by German E-Boats when HMCS Athabaskan was sunk during an action with German destroyers in the Bay of Biscay.

What isn't in the article was the fact that Joe was badly burned in the water that night and his recovery in a POW camp was slow and painful. Nevertheless, as the article states, Joe was always a positive person, even though he fought personal demons that today we would call PTSD. I don't know why he told me stories of his captivity when he wouldn't tell anybody else but tell me he did. He had been a cooper before the war and his German captors discovered this during interrogations. He was assigned to making barrels. He would snicker when he told me they wouldn't have been able to hold straw and he had made sure they would leak.

As I arrived home in the late afternoon each day he would call over and have me join him watching his favourite TV program: "Hogan's Heroes". When I asked why, of all people, he would be so taken with a comedy based on a farcical POW camp he told me it was what he had wished his captivity had been ... then go back to laughing at the program.

Joe served 25 years in the RCN and went on to become the executive housekeeper at Saanich Peninsula Hospital. He passed away at age 68. He served in HMC ships Columbia (1), Athabaskan (1), Nootka, Uganda, Warrior, Sioux, Cayuga, Qu'Appelle, various Bay class minesweepers and HMCS Naden, Stadacona and Cornwallis (instructor). I miss him to this day and I can never watch an episode of "Hogan's Heroes" without thinking of him.

HUTCHINSON, Boyd (13 Aug 1926 - 05 Jul 2017) - Peacefully, on Wednesday, July 5, 2017, Boyd Hutchinson passed away at Deer Lodge Centre, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Boyd is survived by his ex-wife Stephanie Winnie Hutchinson, and children: Eric, Arnold, and Claire (Terry Porter and children Shelby and Dean). He is also survived by his children: Dale and Greg (Jessie) (by his ex-wife Natalie) and grandchildren: Neil and Paul. In addition, he leaves to mourn his passing his special companion, Eveleen Lawrence. He is predeceased by his ex-wife Natalie, his parents and two sisters, Gertrude and Phyllis. He also has a brother Bill who resides in England. Boyd was born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan on August 13, 1926. He was the son of Mahlon and Olive Hutchinson. Boyd picked up golf at a young age at the Elmwood Golf Club and won the Junior Club Championship in 1940 to 1941. But the Second World War intervened and he joined the navy, where he achieved the rank of Master Warrant Officer. He retired from the Navy after 25 years and worked for Canada Post for 18 years until his retirement. Boyd's passion was golfing and he won many trophies. Being in the Navy he played many of the top golf courses in the world including the Old Course at St. Andrews. He also liked reading, movies and travelling with his companion, Eveleen. He was an excellent snooker player and bowled regularly. Boyd was a dedicated member of the Royal Canadian Legion for 48 years, a member of the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans in Canada for 40 years, and a member of Teulon Golf and Country Club for 35 years. We thank the staff and nurses at the Deer Lodge Centre and the Health Sciences Centre, as well as Boyd's son, Eric, and Boyd's partner, Eveleen Lawrence, for taking care of Boyd in his final years. A private military funeral service will be held for immediate family. Donations in Boyd's memory may be made to The Kidney Foundation of Canada. WONG, Ping Zunn (26 Feb 1947 - 12 Jul 2017) - Age 70 of Dutch Settlement passed away peacefully at the VG Hospital in Halifax on the eve of July 12/17. Ping served 30 years in the Royal Canadian Navy travelling abroad on many naval vessels. He was the youngest son of Tim and Kathleen Wong (predeceased) . Ping is survived by his wife Jackie (Caines) and son Jim and granddaughter Kailee; step-daughter Sheena Hamilton (Paul) and grand children Lindsay and Jared; step-son Shawn. He is also survived by his brother Kai (Michele) in Vancouver; sisters Tai (vancouver), Lou ( Toronto) and Kay (Leamington) . Ping is pre- deceased by 3 sisters. JENNINGS, Rex Joseph - passed away on Sunday, May 14, 2017, at the age of 91 years, surrounded by his family and caregivers at the Chateau Providence Care Centre in St. Brieux, SK, following a 10-year fight with cancer. Rex leaves his wife of 54 years, Simone (nee: Stacey) Jennings; his son, Guy (Tara) and their children: Hannah and Matt; his son, Grant and his sons: Harrison and Gordon; and daughter, Marlene Jennings (Clint Sawicki) and their sons Oscar and Reese; sister-in-law: Anne Jennings and her children: Tim (Suzanne) Jennings and Gail Jennings and their families. Rex was predeceased by his parents: Guy and Laura Belle Jennings and his brother, Warren Jennings. Rex was born in Regina in 1925 and grew up in Colonsay where the family built and operated the service station at the junction of highways #16 and #2 and later at the family quarter section four miles east and one mile north of Codette. Rex the oldest and Warren the youngest sons of Laura Belle and Guy Jennings, and were products of the prairies born in the mid-1920s and growing up during the Great Depression. The family eventually moved into the town of Nipawin in 1939, and it was forever the hometown of the Jennings family. With the sky in his eye, in his 18th year, Rex travelled to Saskatoon to join up for the services for WWII. The air force was not in Rex's future being affected by colour blindness; however, the Royal Canadian Navy came calling for him in 1944 and he eventually ended up on HMCS Westmount as the ship's signalman. Upon his discharge in 1946, he returned to school and graduated as a forest ranger in 1949 with his first post in Fort Qu'appelle. Rex's life changed in 1963 when he met a young Simone Stacey from Prince Albert, which led to a wedding in April of that year and a lifelong companion. This union was punctuated by the birth of two sons, Guy and Grant and daughter, Marlene. Rex did not give up on flight, and turned his attentions to earning his commercial licence and eventually combining his passions as the conservation officer pilot in Hudson Bay. Rex logged 7,000 hours as a bush pilot and in 1972 he decided to fold up his wings while luck was on his side and move his young family to a new post in Melfort, where Simone still resides. Rex retired here and spent his remaining years enjoying all the outdoors could offer a man and enjoying his children, grandchildren and cherished friends. He was no stranger to coffee row where he freely listened, laughed and provided his opinions to his companions. Thank you for being part of Rex's life. Posthumous words by Rex: "If I could live my life over again, I would do it all the same" Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the Melfort Gun Club, Melfort, SK. A private family interment will be held at a later date. BOYCE, W. Melville - Suddenly but peacefully, with family by his side on Tuesday July 11, 2017 just days before his 93rd birthday, Mel passed away after a wonderful weekend at his cherished farm. Beloved father of Christie (Alan Brenchley), Doug (Debra Koopmans) and Murray, dear grandfather of Caitlin, Diana, Peter and Brian. Mel was predeceased by his wife Margaret (having been her loving spouse for 56 years). Brother to Joan Greig of Victoria, BC (Bob, deceased), the late Edward (Kaye deceased), the late Edna Jones (Mel deceased), and to sister-in-law Lois McEachern (Don deceased) of Ottawa and caring uncle to their families. After serving in the Royal Canadian Navy, Mel graduated from the University of Toronto and had a distinguished career in architecture, becoming a Senior Partner at Page & Steele Architects and was invested as a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. Mel served his community actively through the Rotary Club of Toronto West and the Board of Directors of Goodwill Industries. Mel's wide circle of friends experienced his caring interest and attention and those nurtured bonds were greatly valued by him. Ever positive and exuding a contagious sense of humour, Mel chose to live life to the fullest. A keen traveller, avid curler, always a project on the go, his zest for life, his whistle and so much more will be sadly missed. AB Smithson survived the sinking of HMCS Fraser, and like most of the Fraser's survivors, was drafted to the newly acquired HMCS Margaree, losing his life when she was sunk just a month and a half later. David was born at Medicine Hat, AB on 03 Sep 1920, to David C and Bertha Louise Smithson of Medicine Hat.. He attended Medicine Hat's Elm Street School and Alexandria high School. As a boy he had taken much interest in the boy Scout Movement and was Assistant Scout Master of the St. Barnabas Club Pack at Medicine Hat. David enlisted in the RCN at Esquimalt BC in September 1938.

QUISTBERG, Gordon George (21 Sep 1925 - 15 Ju l2017) - It is with heavy hearts that we share with you the passing of Gordon George Quistberg, at Ste. Anne Hospital, at the age of 91. For those of you that had the pleasure of knowing Gord, his colourful personality will be genuinely missed. After serving in the Navy during the Second World War he worked hard as a C.N.R. blacksmith for over 40 years. He cherished and missed Louise, his late wife of 59 years, every day. They spent many happy times at their cottage on Muriel Lake. Gord enjoyed a good laugh every day, especially when playing a game of crib, and had a soft heart for all animals, especially puppies. It was Gord's wish to remain in his home as long as he could and this was made possible with the excellent care from his doctors at the Ste. Anne Clinic and Hospital, Veterans Affairs, homecare staff and special friends in the Paradise Village community In keeping with Gord's wishes a private graveside ceremony will be held where he will be laid to rest with his wife Louise at Green Acres Cemetery. SWARBRICK, Robert Anthony (Bob), ABSD, RCNVR (1925-1999) - Surrounded by family, Bob Swarbrick, age 73, passed away peacefully at the Health Sciences Centre on March 25, 1999. Bob will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Betty; son Bruce (Mary-Lou); daughter Barb (Roland), and son Glenn. Grandchildren Shelagh, Peter, Lauren and Luke will miss their special Poppa. Bob completed Navy Service in the Second World War and went on to became a proud member of the Winnipeg Fire Department. After 40 rewarding years on the job, he and Betty went on to enjoy retirement, which included many happy winters with friends in Arizona. A memorial mass will take place on Tuesday, March 30 at 2:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Victory Church, Arnold and Osborne. EGERTON, Alfred William Gould (Al) - in his 86th year passed away in the early morning of July 19th 2017, at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Barrie, ON. Loving father of Coleen (Paul) McLachlan and Carolyn Ross. Lovingly remembered by brothers’ Jim (Doreen) and Andy, sister Eda, and loving nieces, nephews and other relatives. Will also be missed by stepdaughter Lisa (Jeff) Peller and special friends Forbes Cavanagh and Jeanette Yeo. Born in Princeton, BC in 1932 to Alfred and Minnie Egerton, Al spent his early years in the roaring gold mining town of Hedley, BC, living halfway up the mountain where his father ran an ore skip; then moving to Oliver in the Okanagan Valley at age 10. Living in mountainous terrain both in Hedley and Oliver, Al spent much of his youth climbing the mountains, fishing the many trout streams and rivers, and killing the occasional rattlesnake barehanded. Al attended South Okanagan High School and in Grade 12 was voted in as President of the Oliver Teen Town, a youth group that undertook various community projects. He was an active player in all high school sport programs, and played first string center in basketball. In 1950, Al enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces (Navy), serving in Korea, Ireland, Canada and the High Seas. In the Korean War, he and fellow crew members of the HMCS Athabaskan received commendation for their participation in the Battle of Inchon; detailed by General MacArthur, they sailed up the Yalu River behind enemy lines rescuing 250 wounded South Korean soldiers. Al spent 10 years in the Navy, also serving on the aircraft carrier HMCS Bonaventure, and received the U.N. Medal, the Korean Medal, and the Korean Ships Company Citation Medal. After leaving the Navy, Al held sales and management positions, moving with his wife and two daughters to Toronto, ON in 1969, to work at Canadian General Electric. In 1974, Al founded Egetec Enterprises Inc., a distributor of scientific products for oceanography and environmental monitoring. During Al’s business career, he was a Director and President of the Canadian Sportsman’s Association and Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters. In his later years, he was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion in Barrie, ON. Al was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fly-tying and fishing, canoeing, cottage life and camping. He was a beautiful dancer and he fully enjoyed his years of golfing, playing snooker, puttering in his beautiful garden and cooking, cooking, cooking! He was strong, proud, fiercely independent, generous and kind with a great sense of humour, and will be dearly missed by Coleen and Carolyn and all who knew and loved him. In keeping with Al’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. On Tuesday evening, July 25th, there will be an informal “drop by and have a drink on Al” at the Barrie Royal Legion from 5:00 PM – 7:30 PM for Legion members, snooker players and close family and friends. Peter was born in Summerside, PEI on April 17, 1950. He is survived by his children; Melanie Waugh (Trevor), Dartmouth and Mathew Gouchie, Dartmouth; brothers, Robert (Lana), Florida; Howard, Wentworth; Harry (Lucy), Ontario; Charles (Lynn), Onslow; Anthony (Karen), Truro; sisters, Jane Makinen (Paul), Salmon River; Beverly Cutten, Bible Hill; Jackie Waugh, Truro. He is predeceased by his parents, James “Harry” Waugh and Rosemary “Molly” Waugh; his sisters, Barbara McLean and Karen Gero. He enlisted in the Canadian Forces in 1970 as a medic and served his country for 27 years. Upon his discharge from active service, he worked as civilian medic at CFB Shearwater and for the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires, ultimately retiring in 2011. On March 5, 1977 and April 26, 1991 respectively, he welcomed his two children, Melanie and Mathew, who were the most important part of his life. Peter was a devoted father and outdoor enthusiast. He enjoyed golf, curling and loved taking in any amateur sporting events he could drive himself to. Tim Hortons stock is likely to take a slight dip in the next few days as he was a regular at many local stores where they knew his order before he even got to the counter. He loved the outdoors and nature in general. Peter had a particular fascination with eagles and made the trek many years down to the Eagle Watch in The Valley to see them in person. He will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and all who knew him. A small service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on May 6th at the Dartmouth Funeral Home, 29 Queen St in Dartmouth. Wilbur is survived by his loving family: daughter Sherry; son-in-law Gordon Chem; grandsons Ryan and Nolan; brothers Clarence and Ronnie Fisher. Wilbur was sincerely grateful to have had such a wonderful and supportive group of family and friends.

WATSON, Derek Mayne (Hoss), CD, RCN (20 Apr 1939 - 15 Jul 2017) - age 78 of Halifax, passed away July 15, 2017 after a prolonged battle with cancer. Born on April 20, 1939 in Sarnia, Ont (Home of two Grey Cups). He was the son of the late Mayne and Adilene (Woverton). Hoss is survived by loving wife Joan; son Jeff (Deborah) of King City, Ont; daughters Suzanne (Alan) Paré and Cindy (Jeff) Hiltz ; sister Nancy (Ron) Jensen of Terrace Bay, Ont; grandchildren Zachary, Connor, Trisha, Kristen, Elysia, Amanda, Timothy and Etienne; great grandchildren Isabelle and Kara-Lee. Predeceased by his parents, brother David, first wife Gwen (Smart), and nephew Allan Jensen. Served in the Royal Canadian Navy for more than 22 years (1956-1978) retiring as P.O.1 Served on various ships and bases, including R.M.C. (1966-1968) CFB Kingston 1976 Olympic staff (Olympic races Lake Ontario). Employed by Nova Scotia Correctional Services and Department of Justice (1979-1994). Hoss played football for Stadacona and Shearwater (1959-1967). He was a member of the Masonic Order, past Master of Keith Lodge #17, a 32nd Degree member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, and a Philae Shriner; Member of the Halifax RCN Association (Peregrine Club) and of the Atlantic Chief and P.O. Association. Donation in his memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

DAVIES, Ronald (1938-2017) Born in Saunders, AB, Ron passed away peacefully at RJH Hospice on July 11, 2017. For many years he battled a chronic illness, which developed into cancer in 2008. He served in the Canadian Military for 25 years, 16 years in Victoria as a engineer/stoker with the Navy & the remainder as a machinist in the Air force with postings in Trenton, Ontario, Lahr Germany & Comox, B.C. Soon after retirement in 1980 he moved with his family to Maui, Hawaii where he was manager & part owner of the Kihei Prime Rib House. In the late 80's he returned to Victoria to pursue his many talents & interests. He had enjoyed curling in earlier years & upon his return became a member of the Lake Hill Lawn Bowling Club from 1989 - 2010. His hobbies were refurbishing pianos, remodeling our homes, building & fixing things. He played the piano by ear, and in the 1950's had his own band. Ron enjoyed cruises in the Caribbean, Panama Canal, Trans Atlantic, Mediterranean & the Pacific Oceans, finding it quite different from sailing in his Navy days. He & Heather also enjoyed many Winters at their home in Mesa, Arizona. Ron loved his family, he is survived by his wife of 58 years, Heather; children; Colin, Linda (Paul), Mark (Barbara), grandchildren Tyler, Chelsea, & Kayla, step grandchildren, Erich & Taylor, Kaycee & Andrew, sisters, Ruth & Betty, and many extended family. HEASLIP, William Thomas (Bill), Lt (SB) Radar, RCNVR (13 Oct 1920 - 05 Jul 2017) - passed away peacefully in the early morning of July 15, 2017 supported by his family, which he loved very much. Predeceased by his wife Jean. Bill will be deeply missed by his children David, James, Anne, John, Patricia, Robert, Kathleen and Paul; his 12 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Bill led a full life that included four years in WWII as a Radar Officer in the Royal Canadian Navy, serving in North Atlantic and Mediterranean theatres. He graduated top of the University of Toronto class of '47 in aeronautical engineering and applied physics. He had an exceptional career in the aviation industry with the DeHavilland Aircraft Co. (now Bombardier) where he was a Design Engineer and for many years, Vice-President engineering. Bill was a passionate patron of the arts. He loved opera, ballet, the symphony and theatre. He was a talented wood-worker and is famous for his incredibly life-like rocking horses. He also created numerous board games. Bill was an outgoing, extremely generous, patient man with a great sense of humour. He will be remembered fondly by everyone who had the pleasure and privilege of knowing him. JOHNSTON, Robert John (22 Feb 1925 - 13 Jul 2107) - passed away peacefully at the Intercare Southwood Hospice on Thursday, July 13, 2017 at the age of 92 years. Robert is survived by his lovely bride of 66 years Lois Arlene Johnston. They were happily married and had two children Brian and Roberta; and four grandchildren Sara, Samantha, Jamie, and Melanie. He is also survived by his sister Audrey, and daughter- in-law Monet. Robert was predeceased by his son Brian, his son-in-law Mike, his brother Stuart, and parents Melvin and Rose. Robert needed written permission from his parents in order to join the Canadian Navy during WWII at the age of 17. After the War he began a lifelong obsession with golf and made many, many special friends. He worked in the broadcast industry for his entire career and lived life happily. Respecting Robert's wishes no service will be held. McRAE, Murray (29 Oct 1929 - 14 Jul 2017) Passed away peacefully on July 14, 2017. Murray is survived by his loving wife of 70 years Colleen, daughter Linda Cann (Ron), son John (Sean), grandsons Ron Cann (Rani) and Steve Cann (Joanna), and five adored great grandchildren Maxime, Jackson, Luka, Colby and Owen. His passing is an enormous loss for family, friends and neighbours. Born in Vancouver, Murray lived his entire life in the lower mainland and in Victoria during a stint in the Navy. Always a high achiever he was the star western sales representative for Tuck Tape for many years. After retirement, Murray and Colleen traveled, enjoyed cruises and happy times with the family at Black Mountain Ranch. Murray was a true gentleman, who treated everyone equally and always made time to help and advise others. Family, friends and neighbours all benefited from his honesty, fairness, kindness and generosity. He was a witty storyteller and the family historian. A wise investor and a cautious gambler, Murray loved numbers and statistics and could tell you to the penny what a winning horse paid 30 years ago. ROE, Carl Alexander - Carl's long journey through life ended on July 15 at Chartwell-Westmount Long-Term Care Residence in Kitchener, just two months short of his 95th birthday. Born in Toronto in 1922, Carl grew up during the Great Depression and proudly served his country in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War's Battle of the Atlantic. Returning home, he married Ruth, raised a family in postwar Willowdale and resumed what would be a four-decade career as an Electrician, then Factory Maintenance Manager, at Ferranti-Packard Ltd., which manufactured giant electrical transformers. He relished his 35-year retirement, which featured travel, relaxing with an occasional rum and coke at his Lake Simcoe cottage and cheering on the New England Patriots and Manchester United FC while making money betting against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Carl's last year was filled with ongoing health problems which he met with characteristic stubborn tenacity after moving to Kitchener from Peterborough. Watching every kind of sporting event imaginable on TV was a great consolation. Carl is survived by sons Stephen (Lilia Belfort) and John (Betty) and son-in-law Randy Storey. He will be remembered by grandchildren Joanna Schiedel, Bronwyn Roe, Emily Roe, Ryan Storey, Dan Storey, Caitlin Meadows and Alex Roe. Carl also leaves behind great-grandsons Callum Schiedel and Jack Meadows. Carl was predeceased by Ruth, his wife of 57 years and daughter Cathy Storey. NIVEN, Beverly Yearsley (Bev) (1916-2005) - 88, Sydney - It is with great sadness that the family of Beverly Yearsley Bev Niven, 88, of Columbia St., Sydney, announce his passing. He passed away peacefully with family at his side, Sunday, Feb. 20th, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Bev struggled bravely for a number of years with Parkinson's Disease. Bev was the son of the late William and Mamie Yearsley Niven. He is survived by his wife of 61 years Jean MacGillivary; loving children Bill, David, Mary Alice David, Philip Laurie, Beverley Rod, Paul Lois, many grandchildren, 2 brothers and 2 sisters. Born August 23, 1916, in Niagara Falls, Ont., Bev served as a wireless operator on HMCS Athabaskan during World War Two. He worked as a Customs Officer on the Peace Bridge. DAVIES, Beverley Price - Born on February 14, 1920 in Toronto passed away peacefully at home with his wife and children at his side after a brief battle with cancer on Saturday June 11, 2005 in his 86th year. He was predeceased by his parents Frederick and Rosanna Davies, his brothers Frederick and Richard Davies and his sister Rose Davies Smyth. Beloved husband of Wynne Davies 63rd year of marriage, father of Beverley Jane Davies-Fraser Jim Barritt of Red Deer Alberta and Frederick John Davies Monica of Welland, grandfather of Courtney Fraser-Mason Chris; Alex Fraser, Jacqueline Davies, Rosie Davies and Conrad Davies. The Davies family has had a long tradition of professional service to Port Colborne and Niagara. Beverley's father was Chief of Police in Port Colborne in the early 30's to 1954. Beverley practiced Law in Port Colborne for over 40 years. He began his career in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 1941. He had the unique honour of being assigned as Sir Winston Churchill's body guard during a visit in Canada. At the beginning of WWII, Beverley joined the Royal Canadian Navy and achieved the rank of Lieutenant serving on the HMCS Prescott, a Canadian frigate. His main task was seeking out German submarines and escorting war ships through dangerous waters. Following the war, Beverley enrolled in Osgoode Hall Law School which lead to his return to Port Colborne after his graduation in Law in 1951. He served as Assistant Crown Attorney for Welland County and was named Queen's Counsel in 1966. He served on many community and regional organizations including many years as Chair of the Niagara Regional Police Commission, Chair of the Port Colborne General Hospital Board of Directors, Member of the Board of the Shaver Hospital, President of the Port Colborne Club and a number of other community endeavours. In business, he founded Laketown Investments Limited and Aberdare Developments Inc. which have constructed many buildings in Port Colborne. He was a member of the Port Colborne Lions Club and was a lifelong member of the Port Colborne Baptist Church. Beverley will be fondly remembered for his generous spirit and his keen and quick sense of humour, his love of music and the trumpet he played for almost 80 years. The family would like to extend a special note of thanks to the many people who assisted them through this difficult time. In particular the Canadian Red Cross, the nurses of St. Elizabeth Health Care, the Alzheimer's Society and Veteran's Affairs. Our heartfelt gratitude and affection goes out to Maureen Bensen, our cousin Sharla Moore and Dr. James Dewar who were always there to help when we needed it the most. HIGGINS, Frank Nixon - Passed away peacefully at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, May 18th, 2006 at the age of 81. Beloved husband of 59 years of Alice (nee Frost), loving father of Allan (Patricia) of St. Catharines, Suzanne (Cliff Iverson) of Grimsby and Wayne (Linda) also of Grimsby. He will be sadly missed by his much loved grandchildren Steven, David, Christine, Sabrina and Michael. Loving brother of Barbara (the late Art O'Connor) and predeceased by his sister Joan. He also leaves behind his brother in law Jim Frost of Nova Scotia and sister in law Elinor Moore of Ajax and survived by many nieces and nephews. Frank was employed by Dofasco for 24 yrs. until his retirement. He was a WWII veteran and served proudly on the HMCS Saint John, and was a member of the Smithville Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. He also was a member of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, The Priory of Canada. He touched many lives with his warm smile, always there to lend a hand of encouragement and was very proud of his family as we were of him. He leaves behind many friends at the United Mennonite Retirement Home in Vineland where he resided for the past five years. Special thanks to the ER, C ward and hospital medical staff at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital for the excellent care and compassion shown to our husband, father, grandfather and brother over the past few weeks. He joined the Welland Fire Department in 1949 and after 34 years he retired as Captain in 1983. He will be missed by his friends of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #4 Dart League. CLIMIE, Richard (Dick) - Passed away peacefully after a courageous and lengthy battle with leukemia, Thursday, March 5, 2009, surrounded by his loving family, at the Hotel Dieu Shaver Hospital, at 82 years of age. Beloved husband of Olga (Nikki), for 55 years. Loving father of John and Donna. Cherished grand dad of Joan, Jennifer, Nicole, Richard and Kathryn. Dear brother of Leroy, brother in law of Boris (Bert) Nicoloff, Rose and Oscar Lorentz and Mary Wilson. Uncle to Mark, David, Paul, Allan and Tony. Dick served during WWII for the Royal Canadian Navy on the HMCS Uganda. Dick was a dedicated pharmacist who served the community with generosity as the Owner/Operator of Niagara Drugs in St. Catharines for 25yrs, then 5yrs at Climie's Pharmacy. Also he was a past president of the St. Catharines and District Pharmacist's Association, member of the Gyro Club, member of the Probus Club. He volunteered at the Niagara Apothecary shop and Meals on Wheels. He enjoyed a good game of golf and was an avid curler at the St. Catharines Golf and Country Club. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Dr. P. Fernandez for providing dedicated medical care with compassion through out his illness. At Dick's request there will be no visitation. BRENNAN, Harry Sr. - (16 Sep 1935 - 16 Aug 2012) - passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the Hamilton General Hospital. He was the beloved husband of 59 years to Carolyn Brennan, loving father of Evelyn Moore (Mike Parker), Harry Brennan Jr. (Yvonne) and Terry Brennan. Harry was predeceased by his parents Kenneth and Mary Brennan and his brothers Merle and Bob (Reno) Brennan. Harry honorably enrolled in the Royal Canadian Navy onboard the HMCS Magnificent stationed in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Later he was employed at INCO for 8 years until the start of his employment at General Motors until his retirement 36 years later. He was a member of the Canadian Corps. He will be greatly missed by his faithful dog Patches and well and his family and friends. The Brennan family will receive visitors at the Davidson Funeral Home, 135 Clarence St. Port Colborne on Sunday August 19, 2012 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Cremation will follow. SOMMERVILLE, Robert Lindley (Bob) - Peacefully surrounded by family at Maple Park Lodge, Fort Erie on September 7, 2013 at the age of 91 years. Beloved husband of the late Dora (2010) for 66 years. Cherished father of David Sommerville (Susan) and Julie Detenbeck (Stewart). Dear granddad of Heidi Blom (Anton) and Alana Detenbeck (Roy Bacot). Great granddad to Talia and Naia Blom. Robert will also be sadly missed by his sister Loreen Dundar (Clarence), sister-in-law Jessie Martin and many nieces and nephews. Robert was predeceased by his parents Wallace and Ethel Sommerville. Born July 18, 1922 in Hamilton, ON, graduated from Delta Collegiate. Served in the Canadian Navy for 3 years as a visual signalman on the Corvette HMCS Snowberry in the North Atlantic and Bay of Biscay and later on the Destroyer HMCS Niagara out of Halifax. He graduated in 1949 from the School of Optometry in Toronto and obtained his doctor of Optometry from University of Waterloo as a graduate student. He set up his Optometric Practice in Fort Erie in 1949, retiring in 1996. He has been a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry since 1954 and was president for several years of the Niagara Frontier Society of Optometrists (International) and also served on the executive of the Ontario Assoc. of Optometrists. He was active in Central Ave. United Church, Clerk of Session for several years and later on as a Chairman of the Board of Trustees. As an active and enthusiastic gardener he had two terms as President of the F.E. Horticultural Society. Robert was Past-President of the F.E. Branch of the Canadian Red Cross Society, served on the executive of the F.E. Kinsmen Club and continued to be active in the K40 Club. He was an active and enthusiastic sailor in the Fireball Class, competing in both the U.S. and Canada and was a charter and forming member of the Parkway Sailing Club and served as its second Commodore. In later years he was an avid windsurfer, often seen in front of his home on the Niagara Parkway. He had a deep interest in oil painting as well as photography and acted as President in both Welland Colour Slide Club and later the Fort Erie Camera Club. His keen interest in nature and birding was enhanced by his active membership in the Buffalo Ornithological Society for 35 years. His interest in music was enhanced while a member of the Board of the Niagara Symphony Association. Bob volunteered his time and services to his local community and as far away as the Caribbean. He will be mostly remembered for his love and support for his family. A sincere thank-you to Dr. Scher and the staff at Garrison Place and Maple Park Lodge for all of the kindness, care and compassion offered to Bob and our family. SMART, James Pattullo - (1928-2013)  Passed away at the Greater Niagara General Hospital on Saturday, December 14, 2013, at age 85. Beloved husband of 54 years to Jean. Dearly loved uncle and great uncle to his many nephews and nieces (to all of whom he was affectionately known as "Uncle Keek"). Survived by his sister-in-law Veronica Smart of Welland, and his close friends Pam Reid and the entire Newton family. Predeceased by his parents, Jim and Rita, sister Marge and husband Art Conte, and brother Bob. Born in Arbroath, Scotland, in 1928, arrived in Canada as an infant, but remained loyal to his Scottish roots. Joined the Canadian Navy and served two tours of duty in Korea aboard the HMCS Iroquois, HMCS La Hulloise, HMCS Magnificent and HMCS Haida. An avid enthusiast of military/Scottish band music and a drummer for the Sea Cadets, as well as various local pipe bands, including the Niagara Regional Police pipe band. Employed variously with CN, Canada Post and Canada Customs. A dedicated and jolly Santa Claus to many local children for several years. There will be a celebration of Jim's life at Hetherington & Deans Funeral Chapel , 5176 Victoria Avenue, Niagara Falls, with visitation on Monday, December 30, 2013, at 10 a.m., followed by service at 11 a.m. His wife Jean wishes to thank extended family and the many friends and neighbours for their generous support and time given without hesitation. SHEPPARD, Bruce Richard (22 May 1925 - 19 May 2014) - Peacefully at Pembroke Regional Hospital with family by his side. Bruce was born and raised in St Catharines, Ontario. He served honourably in HMCS Sackville in WWII before going into teaching. Bruce retired in 1983 as Director of Education for Base Petawawa schools to spend time with his family and work in the garden. His calm demeanor, generosity and ever present kindness will be sorely missed by his friends and family. No matter how many hours spent, or number of screaming children present, dad always left you with the same words, "Come back when you can stay a while." (Right back at you, dad!) Bruce is predeceased by his first wife, Ruth (née Arnold ), brothers Donald and Ross (Jan). He is survived by his wife Janet (née Mackay), sons Richard (Anne), Robert (Jane), Donald, Graham (Jenny) and Ian (Jennifer); his brother Robert (Christine); grandchildren Rebecca (Ryan), Bruce (Crystal), Stephen, Haley, Phillip, Mackenzie, Olivia, Abbey and Liam; great-grandchildren Thomas, Oliver and Logan. LUCIN, Anthony (Tony) - Passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 16, 2014 at the St. Catharines Hospital, one month after the passing of his beloved wife of 68 years, Catherine (Oct. 7, 2014). Loving father of Carole (Jim) Price, Janet (the late Robert) Malcomson, Douglas (Karen), Margaret (Les) Mitro and Ken (Candace). Proud grandpa of Carrie (Geoff) MacGillivray, Melanie (Andrew) Santorelli, Kevin (Trish) Lucin, Michael (Cindy) Mitro, Kurt (Robin) Lucin and Amanda (Dave Leaver) Mitro. Special GG of Holly and Sarah MacGillivray and Madeline Santorelli. Predeceased by his mother Mary Ann Lucin, his brother Edward and sister Helen Stuebing. Survived by many nieces, nephews and members of the Mussar family in Kitchener-Waterloo. Tony will also be fondly remembered by Mary and Terry White and family. Tony was a World War II Naval Veteran, serving on the HMCS Red Deer and a proud member of the Port Dalhousie Legion, Branch #350. READ, Harry - Born June 14, 1920, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2015, with family by his side. Predeceased by his loving wife Helen. Will be sadly missed by many family and friends. WWII Navy veteran. Served on board HMCS Annan in North Atlantic. Longtime member of the Port Dalhousie branch 350 legion. Harry has resided at the Loyalist for the past three years. Over this time the staff became very special to him. Craig and Janice would like to thank "his girls" at the Loyalist for the loving way they cared for him. In keeping with his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service to honour his life will take place at a later date.

HMCS ANNAN

BLANCHARD, Arthur Phyllias Sr. (23 Mar 1933 - 18 Jun 2015). After his long fight, Art has gone to join his son Arthur Jr. and best fishing buddy and son-in-law Frank. Left behind is his wife Stella (Giovenazzo) of 61 years, his daughter and caregiver Veronica (late Rick Morrow, Mike Lizotte), Cyndy Goss (late Neil), Karen Marasco (late Frank) and Julie (Dale) Friesman. He will be sadly missed by his oldest granddaughter Tonya Morrow (Will Bruin) (who were his work-horses), grandson Richard (Krystal) Morrow, his little play buddies and great-grandchildren Richard, Isabella, Jason and Sam. Papa was never too tired to play catch or kick a soccer ball in the driveway with his little guys and he loved to make Sammy laugh. He also leaves behind many other grandchildren, Louis, Mike, Sada, Jon, Jenny, Alexandria, Curtis, Dalton, Samantha, and Connor, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters and brothers-in-law, Aunt Teresa Graham in Niagara Falls and sisters Linda Falconer (Bob) and Irene Grant (late Chris) of London, ON. Papa leaves great memories for all his grandchildren who got to enjoy Hound Chute Lake Hunting Camp in Latchford, ON with him. Those years will forever be in our hearts. He is predeceased by his parents Anthanas (Benny) and Blanche (Duval), son Arthur Jr. (2012 and his late wife Cindy), brothers baby Hector, Ernie, Larry, Hector, Kenny, Raymond and Jimmy and also sisters Carmen and Shirley. Art was born in Timmins, ON then moved to the small town of Cobalt where his family and ours enjoyed years of special memories. His parents relocated to Welland and they made their home on Dunkirk Court until his adult life. He built his family home in Cooksmills in the early 1970's where he lived with his wife Stella until his passing. He proudly served for the Royal Canadian Navy on the HMCS Ontario and was proud to have been one of the many sailors who escorted our now Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip around South America before her reign as Queen of England began. He ran teen dances from the Winstonville Hall, Welland and The Cove on Long Beach during the early 1950's. He was a bricklayer by trade as were his father and brothers. Art served as business agent for the Bricklayers International Union in the late 60's, spent some time in real estate and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 4 in Welland for 55 years. His garage became his daily refuge where he would spend hours puttering around and outdoors in his yard picking up leaves and millions of acorns when weather permitted. A special thanks to his longtime CCAC nurse Michael Kish and many other care providers who gave him their patience and tender care. Respecting Art's wishes cremation has taken place The family will receive friends at J.J. Patterson & Sons Funeral residence, 19 Young Street, Welland on Wednesday, June 24, 2015 from 11:00 a.m till 1:00 p.m followed by a Memorial Service in the Funeral Home Chapel. PIHACK, George, L/Torpedoman - passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at the Welland Hospital in his 94th year. Devoted father to Brian, Karl (Dina), Carol and Ann (Aaron). Loving grandfather to Stephan, Alexander, Samantha, Christopher and Joseph. He was predeceased by his wife Alexandra and his son Guy Stephan and his sisters Eva (Joe Simunic) and Mary (Tom Anderson). He proudly served in WWII as Leading Torpedoman on the HMCS Whitethroat. He worked at the Page-Hersey/Stelco Works for over 40 years. He was a Volunteer Fireman with over 65 years of dedication to the Welland Volunteer Fire Department #2 (The Old Crowland Boys). He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion #4 and a life member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #977. The Pihack family will receive friends at J.J. Patterson & Sons Funeral Residence 19 Young Street, Welland on Sunday from 3-5 & 7-9 pm. The Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel on Monday, September 19, 2016 at 11:30 am. HOWELL, Arthur Tom (Art) (30 Jan 1924 - 02 Jul 2017) - It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our father, July 2, 2017 at Royal Jubilee Hospital. Art was born at Miss Leonard's Nursing Home in Victoria to W.F. "Ivan" and Martha Howell. He grew up on Oliver Street with his older brother Bill, scrambling around the rocks and beaches of McNeil (Shoal) Bay. Dad always loved the sea and served in the Royal Canadian navy during World War II. After the war he worked for his father at the Old English Beverage Co. While travelling across Canada selling Cocoa Cola he met his future wife, Beryl, a student nurse, in Saskatoon. Art and Beryl were married in 1950 and raised their two girls in Telegraph Bay where they remained until 2014. Many people will remember Dad from Eaton's where he worked, meeting lots of people, making friends with everyone. In his retirement he enjoyed his house and garden, travelling and putting in his boat. Mum predeceased Dad in 2013 and Dad spent his last years at Somerset House on Dallas Rd. There he made new friends and enjoyed scootering along Dallas Rd., talking to people and petting dogs. Arthur is survived by daughters, Sandra (Terry Moore) and Deborah (Keith Greenhalgh); cousin, Jean Clarke in England and nephews, Lynn Howell and Steve Howell in the United States. Special thanks to friend, George, whose help and loyal friendship over the years was always appreciated. A private gathering will be held to celebrate Art's life.

HOWARD, Thomas James - 76 of Lunenburg County formerly of Lower Sackville and Point St Charles , QC. It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our much loved husband, Father and grandfather. Son of the late Victor and Florence Howard of Montreal QC; He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary (nee McDonald) , his daughters, Amber Hughes (Paul) and Patricia Perlman (Alan); his two grand-children Ronan and Toran Hughes as well as his sisters, Joan Harrison, Lily Parker (Cliff), and Gloria Assels (Eric). Tom was a 30 Year Veteran of the Royal Canadian Navy, serving for many years aboard the HMCS Nipigon; also CFB Stadacona and AMA Head quarters. He was a member of the Point St. Charles Boys and Girls Club of Montreal. Retiring from the Navy Tom continued to serve in the Corps of Commissionaires and finally as a member of the Admiral Desmond Piers Naval Association. Tom was actively involved in the St John's Anglican Church of Lower Sackville and St James Anglican Church in Mahone Bay as both a Eucharistic Minister and choir member. Through his life he had the greatest love of music, singing and, dance. An adventurous nature, Tom's passion for the sea and travelling brought him around the globe. His infectious cheerfulness, stories and voice lifted in song will be greatly missed. Many thanks to his Homecare professionals from Lunenburg County Home Support Services. HMCS NIPIGON

URQUHART, Glen Cameron - of Montreal, QC, Halifax, NS, and Victoria, BC died in Victoria, BC of cardiac arrest on 26 July 2017. He was 75. Glen was born in Montreal, QC on June 15, 1942 to Thomas Cameron and Olive Louise (Price) Urquhart. He attended John Rennie High School and left after graduation to join the Royal Canadian Navy in 1960. He became a helicopter pilot, flying off the navy's last aircraft carrier, HMCS BONAVENTURE, as well as numerous other ships. Prior to retirement he was the commanding officer of the Halifax Rescue Coordination Centre. He retired as a Lieutenant-Commander in 1989, and moved to Victoria. Here he took the Canadian Securities Course, and went on to earn an undergraduate degree at the University of Victoria. He was an active volunteer, working with Oak Bay Volunteers doing income tax for over 20 years, a 3-term member of the University of Victoria's Human Research Ethics Board, a volunteer advocate with The Arthritis Society for many years, as well as a member of its Divisional Advisory Board. Glen is survived by his wife of 45 years, Lorraine (Isaac). A private cremation has taken place. (Victoria Times Colonist 29 Jul 2017)
