OLAFSON, Errol Errol
Stephan - passed away peacefully on Friday, September 29, 2017
at Banff Mineral Springs Hospital, Banff, AB with family by his
side. Born and raised in Eston, Saskatchewan on June 25, 1929 to the
first Icelandic homesteaders. His father Arni Olafson (Akureyri,
Iceland) and mother Sigrid Sessalja Stefansson (Garda, North
Dakota). He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Ann, brothers
Ellaf, Dale, Billy and his sister Evie. Errol's fondest memories
were of his childhood farm life, riding the tractor harvesting the
fields. He also enjoyed travelling playing baseball in his younger
days. Errol also served a short time with the Navy stationed in
Cornwallis, Nova Scotia. Errol married his first love Enid (Banff)
in Digby, N.S. and promptly moved her back to the farm. They enjoyed
travelling and ended up living and working in many Canadian cities,
having four beautiful children along the way. Errol loved his
children deeply and after losing his second love Ann (Edmonton) he
spent the last five years living in Banff to be closer to his two
daughters. He lived most of his life in Edmonton where, along with
Ann and her four children, enjoyed their home life. He loved his
long days at work at Nelson Lumber for over 40 years, only to retire
at the age of 83. He loved being a part of the community, hosting
many a get together, volunteering and donating. Errol was deeply
loved and respected and will be missed by his children: Richard
(Carol Ann) Victoria, B.C.; Francine Milburn (Wayne), Banff; Craig,
Calgary; Patricia (Banff) and son Darwin Foulds (previous
relationship); stepchildren Garry (Brenda), Cochrane; Beverly (Dan);
Gwenda (Jim); Judy (Ron) all of Edmonton. He is also survived by
numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom were
deeply loved. Errol was a true Icelander to the end, stoic, never
complaining...a true gentleman. Errol's wish was to have you please
join us in a Celebration of his Life on Thursday, October 12, 2017
at 5 p.m. in the Sherbrooke Community League Hall, 13008 - 122 Ave
NW., Edmonton AB. Enjoy Errol's favorite food and drinks. Please
bring memories, pictures and lots of laughs. Cremation has taken
place. Errol's service of interment will be held at the Glenwood
Memorial Gardens, Sherwood Park, Alberta at 2 p.m. prior to the
Celebration Service. In lieu of flowers, friends wishing to remember
Errol are encouraged to make a donation in his memory to St.
Martha's Long Term Care memorial fund, Banff Mineral Springs

PURVIS, Robert (Bob)
- Passed away peacefully at Grove Park Nursing Home, Barrie on
Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at the age of 93. Bob is survived by his
loving wife Dorothy of 71 years. Loving father of David Purvis,
Debra Lawson and the late Douglas Purvis. Cherished grandfather of
Lindsay Loft. Bob is also survived by his sister Bernice Black. Bob
was a Veteran of the Royal Canadian Navy. Bob worked for Canada Wire
and Cable in Leaside, Ontario for 42 years as a Plant Manager and
later as a Quality Assurance Manager before his retirement in 1985.
Bob and Dorothy enjoyed their retirement years in Bobcaygeon,
Ontario before moving to Barrie to be closer to family. Bob was
described as a warm, kind and generous person who never talked ill
about anyone and always made the time for people. He loved
gardening, classical music and had a witty sense of humor. He will
be sadly missed by all his family and friends. A Celebration of Life
will be held at the Waterford Retirement Residence Chapel (lower
level 132 Edgehill Drive, Barrie) on Saturday, October 28, 2017 at
11:30 a.m. followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, memorial
donations to the Alzheimer Society would be appreciated. (Toronto

MARCYNUIK, Orest
Peter, AB (19 Jul 1922 - 28 Sep 1993) - Buried at the Fairview
Cemetery, Chambers County, Texas. Prior to joined the RCN in WW2,
Peter, from Winnipeg, MB, worked as a bell-hop at the Mall Hotel and
often gave the shoe-shine boy a hand during rush hours. During
a 4 month tour of duty in Galveston, Texas, Peter met and married
Delores before being drafted to HMCS Oakville.

WARWICK, Claude
Carl, AB, V107691, RCNVR - (28 Oct 1922 - 01 Mar 1945) - The son
of Caroline Warwick of Regina, SK, he attended Scott Collegiate.
Claude was a pageboy at the Saskatchewan legislature when he
enlisted on 17 Nov 1942 at Regina, SK. Able Seaman Warwick died in a
Montreal hospital due to a skull fracture. He was the victim of a
motor vehicle accident on the east coast. He is buried at the Regina
Cemetery, Regina, SK.

and Florence E. Goodwin of Vancouver, British Columbia. Husband of
Mildred C. Goodwin of MacGregor, Manitoba. George died on 12 Dec
1942 in the fire at the Knights of Columbus Service Hostel in St.
John's, NFLD. He is buried in the St. John's (Mount Pleasant)
Cemetery.
Stoker 2nd Class George Everett Goodwin former
resident of Winnipeg, whose wife resides at Macgregor, Manitoba, was
accidentally killed in Newfoundland December 12, 1942. Official word
was received by his wife. Stoker Goodwin was born in Winnipeg and
received his education at Assiniboine School, St. James. He was the
grandson of Mrs. George Robson, with whom he resided. His mother,
Mrs. W. McCartney, resides in Vancouver. He is survived by his wife,
the former Mildred Stinson, of Macgregor, Manitoba, whom he married
in November, 1940, and two daughters, Rae and Merle; an aunt, Mrs.
W. Martin, 272 Kensington Street, St. James, and two uncles George
and Leslie Robson of St. James, Manitoba.

MACMILLAN, Duncan
Ross, SBA, V24847, RCNVR - Son of Archie and E. MacMillan, of
Ottawa, Ontario; husband of Phyllis MacMillan, of Transcona,
Manitoba. Sick Berth Attendant D. R. Macmillan was accidentally
killed in a fire which completely destroyed the Knights of Columbus
Hostel in St. John's, Newfoundland, on December 12, 1942.
Duncan Ross Macmillan, of Transcona, who has
been on active service with the Canadian Navy for the past 18
months, lost his life in a hostel fire at St. John's Newfoundland,
Saturday night. Official word if his death was received by his wife.
Sick Berth Attendant Macmillan was a 1st Class first aid man and
during his months of active service had been sick berth attendant on
a corvette. Last week he was in St. John's to write his L.S.B.A.
final examinations. Prior to enlistment he was employed with the
C.N.R. shops in Transcona. He was the son of Mrs. A. MacMillan, of
Ottawa, a former resident of Transcona. Survivors include his wife
Phyllis MacMillan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles McKenzie Gray,
of Transcona. He has two children Donald age 4 and Lynn age 2 ; his
mother; three brothers Roy and Glen, at Pickle Crow Mines, and
Lieut. Angus, a member of the Québec Rifles Regiment and a prisoner
of war in Hong Kong, and three sisters, Fay, May and Jean, who
reside with their mother in Ottawa.

EPSTEIN, Irving, AB,
V23432, RCNVR - Able Seaman Irving Epstein, V23432, RCNVR of
Montreal, died in the fire in the Knights of Columbus Hostel at St.
John's Newfoundland, on December 12, 1942. He was buried in the St.
John's Jewish Cemetery. He enlisted in the reserve army in June,
1940, and transferred to the RCNVR in November of the same year.
Born in Montreal in 1917 he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis
Epstein of 3717 De Bullion Street. He attended Montreal schools and
was a member of the Y.M.H.A. Before his enlistment he was with a
scarf firm. Two brothers and a sister were in the service, Sapper
Saul Epstein, R.C.E. overseas, Manny, RCNVR and Mary with the
Canadian Women's Army Corps.

MARTIN, James Henry,
Coder, V22685, RCNVR - Son of David and Agnes Martin, of
Toronto, Ontario. Coder J. H. Martin died on 13 Dec 1942 of his
injuries received in a fire which completely destroyed the Knights
of Columbus Hostel in St. John's, Newfoundland while on leave from a
corvette on convoy duty. He was taken to the United States Army
Hospital at Port Pepperell, Newfoundland, where death occurred. He
was educated at Humewood School and Vaughan Road Collegiate. His
parents Mr. and Mrs. David Martin, said he enlisted two years ago
and received his training in Halifax. He was employed in the
engraving department of the T. Eaton Company before enlistment.
Surviving are his parents and a brother, David, at home. He is
buried in the St. John's (Mount Pleasant) Cemetery.

Wallace, of Wawanesa, Manitoba. Wilbert is MPK on 12 Dec 1942 in the
fire at the Knights of Columbus Service Hostel in St. John's, NFLD.
He is buried in the St. John's (Mount Carmel), Roman Catholic
Cemetery.
Ordinary Seaman Wilbert Crothers Wallace was
presumably a victim of the fire in St. John's Newfoundland December
12, 1942, according to official word received by his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. W. Roy Wallace, of Wawanesa. Bill had recently been
transferred from Halifax to Newfoundland, and the Knights of
Columbus Hostel, scene of the fire, was his favorite resort. Bill
Wallace was born on his father's farm at Wawanesa 22 years ago last
month. Educated at Fairbanks Rural School and Wawanesa High School,
he was employed at the Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company in June
1940, as a clerk on the head office staff. On October 01, 1941 he
enlisted with the R.C.N.V.R. Bill is survived by his parent's one
brother and one sister. His father served overseas with C.E.E. in
the last war. Bill was the eldest grandson of the late Robert
Wallace, president of the Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company, whose
death occurred three weeks ago.

Hughes; husband of Mary Thelma Hughes, of Vancouver, British
Columbia. Reginald died on 12 Dec 1942 in the fire at the Knights of
Columbus Service Hostel in St. John's, NFLD. He is buried in the St.
John's (Mount Pleasant) Cemetery.
Petty Officer Cook Reginald Alfred Hughes a
veteran of the last war, who was among the victims of the fire in St
John's, Newfoundland, Dec. 12, 1942. Born in Worcester, England 49
years ago, he joined the British navy and was with the grand fleet
in the battle of Jutland. Retiring from the navy in 1920 he came to
Canada, residing with his sister, Mrs. C. C. Badgley, 496 Warsaw
Avenue, Winnipeg. Called up from the Naval Reserve in September,
1940 he had been on active service with the Royal Canadian Navy as
petty officer until his death. Twelve weeks ago he married Miss
Thelma Patterson, of Vancouver. He was a member of the Fraternal
Order of Engles. His father, Alfred A. Hughes, was killed in one of
the German air raids on London.

Ontario. Robert died on 31 Dec 1942 from injuries sustained on 12

St. John's, NFLD. He is buried in the St. John's (Mount Pleasant)
Cemetery.

MacDONALD, Charlie,
LCdr - (11 Jul 1970 - 11 Oct 2017) - On Wednesday October 11,
2017 at the age of 47, beloved husband of Candace (nee Hendry).
Loving father of Justine (Mike Young) and cherished grandfather of
Grayson. Dear son of Florence (Alan MacDougall) and the late Ken
MacDonald, and brother of John (Chelsea) and Ken. Charlie will be
greatly missed by many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, extended
family and friends. Charlie was a family man, he cherished time with
his family and friends. He loved the outdoors, he was an avid
hunter, and loved spending as much time as he could out in nature.
Charlie's heart was always with the navy. He served in the Royal
Canadian Navy for 29 years, and always looked back with fond
memories. Friends may visit at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral
Homes on Sunday October 15, 2017 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and again
from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. For those wishing, donations may be made to
the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice.

JAKUBOWSKI, Norbert Michael (Jake), MMM, CD,
C1RM / Lt (N), RCN / CAF - (05 Oct 1938 - 09 Oct 2017) - It is
with grieving hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved
husband/father/brother/grandfather on October 9, 2017 at the age of
79. Jake will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 55 years,
Patricia; his sons, Michael (Shirley) and Curtis (Teresita); his
grandchildren, Tania, Eric, Hayley, Aaron, Tianna, and Jaiden; his
brothers, George and Donald; his half siblings, Joseph, Clifford,
Gordon and Carol Lynn; his step siblings, Bill, John, Pat and Mary;
and his beloved puppy, Cleo. Jake had a very distinguished 35 year
career in the Royal Canadian Navy, where he attained the rank of
Chief Petty Officer First Class and later, Lieutenant (Navy). His
proudest achievement was his investiture into the Order of Military
Merit. Jake and Pat fell in love with the Cariboo and retired to 108
Mile Ranch in October 1990 where they continued to reside until Jake’s
passing. Jake was well known for his quick wit and penchant for
chucking zingers at his buddies. He had a soft heart and a more
loyal friend you’d be hard-pressed to find. Jake/Dad/Papa/Norb, we
will always cherish the memories you gave us and our lives are far
richer for having known you. You will forever be in our hearts and
thoughts. The entire family would like to thank the wonderful staff
of Kelowna General Hospital for their professionalism and compassion
and Dr. Geerts for his longtime care of Jake. Respecting Jake’s
wishes, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, donations can

WHITEHEAD, Frederick
George Bradbury, Lt, RCNVR - Son of Joscelyn Bradbury Whitehead
and Mary Elizabeth Whitehead, Vancouver, British Columbia. was born
in Quatres Bornas, Island of Mauritius. He joined the R.C.N.V.R. May
21, 1941 and worked has a Sales Manager at Cope & Sons, Ltd.
before he enlisted. Later he was one of a group of Canadian offices
lent to the Royal Navy for the duration of the war. When last heard
from he was aboard a British destroyer. Lt Whitehead died on 23 May 1942.
The Board of Inquiry, 29 May 1942 noted "Lieutenant F. G. B.
Whitehead drowned; he was apparently suicidal." The next of
kin, Mrs. M. E. Whitehead (mother) has been informed that the
deceased fell overboard and was drowned. It was not considered
advisable at the time to communicate circumstances of death.

DEE, Stanley, LCdr,
RCN (20 May 1927 - 10 Oct 2017) - passed away at the age of 90
on October 10, 2017. He is survived by his wife Gaëtane, three
sons, Jim (Linda) in Texas, Trevor (Joy) in Ottawa, Greg in Toronto
and nine grandchildren: Sally, Kevin, Lisa, Doug, Sarah, Alex, John,
Charlie & George. Stan was born and grew up in Moose Jaw,
Saskatchewan. At the age of 18, after completing his senior
matriculation, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy as an Ordinary
Seaman Officer-Candidate. He served in a Battleship, an Aircraft
Carrier, two Cruisers, but most of his sea time was in Destroyers,
including HMCS Sioux in the Korean War. In his retirement, he
enjoyed skating, bird watching and his cottage on Bob's Lake. At
Stan's request there will be no funeral. Donations in his memory may

EISAN, Kenneth
Francis, CPO - It is with tremendous sadness that we announce
the passing of our beloved father, grandfather and great
grandfather. Kenneth Francis 88, passed away quietly on October 8,
2017 after a difficult eighteen-month battle with Lewy Body
Dementia. Born in Halifax on February 28, 1929 he was the son of the
late Earl and Helen (Conway) Eisan. After retiring from the Base
Audit Section of CFB Stadacona in 1984, Dad spent his retirement
tending to his bookkeeping business, his beautiful lakefront
property at Lake Charlotte, honing his golf skills at Ashburn Golf
Club and making numerous trips to Bangor, ME with Gracie. In
retirement, he also served on the Province of Nova Scotia's Pay
Equity Commission and was the Returning Officer for Halifax Needham
from 1996 until 2013. He performed this function with diligence and
professionalism, always mindful of the important role it played in
the electoral process. 'Chief Petty Officer' Eisan was also a very
proud member of HMCS Scotian for many years as a Naval Reservist and
always enjoyed having his colleagues to the cottage throughout the
summer months to share stories and the occasional cold beverage. As
a long-time resident on the corner of 'Columbus and Isleville' in
the Hydrostone district in the north-end of Halifax, Kenn often
boasted that his magnificent Magnolia tree was only one of six in
Halifax; no one ever dared to question him on this, so we accepted
it as fact. He loved his community and volunteered many hours of his
time to the parishes of St. Josephs and to Saint Mother Teresa of
Kolkata and was widely respected by his peers for his many
contributions. As a devoted Catholic, he never missed Mass and often
told his children that spending an hour of their time with the
"Good Lord" was not much of a sacrifice to make. He
strengthened his connection to his faith in recent years by becoming
very active in the Knights of Columbus, rising to the positions of
Grand Knight of Halifax Council 1097 and Faithful Navigator of
Archbishop McCarthy Assembly 799. Kenn was a self-taught man and he
was proud to be a life-long learner. He would approach new tasks
around the house with meticulous care, always paying close attention
to the fine details. Often times however, he would not get them
finished quick enough for Gracie's liking! Being an avid reader
always provided Dad the edge in any discussion of sports, politics
or current affairs with family and friends. He was a great story
teller, but would sometimes embellish his tales to give his audience
the benefit of his quick wit. Most of all he was a person who
listened to the concerns of all and would dispense advice with
respect and fairness. His children will remember him fondly as a
good man who worked hard, who always put their interests and needs
first and never made judgements about anyone. Dad fought his illness
with strength and quiet dignity and without a doubt his passing will
leave a huge void in the lives he shared with family and friends. He
is survived by daughters Deborah Louise (Edmonton, AB) and Susan
Frances (Ronald) Bone (Lower Sackville), sons Timothy Paul (Patricia
Wright) and Darryl Christopher (Jennifer Hann) both of Halifax,
sisters Sybil (Robert) Spriggs (Bedford), Carole (Norman) Rodgers
(East Jeddore) and his brother Leroy (Joan) Eisan (Clementsport),
sister-in-laws Moira Eisan (Courtenay, BC) and Helen Eisan (Halifax)
and brother-in-law Gary Smith (Hampton, ON). Seven grandchildren:
Chadwick Thomas (Halifax), Sara Louise (Lower Sackville), Jillian
Lea (Halifax), Jessie Ann Marie (Halifax), Kathryn Lea Frances
(Lower Sackville) and Aidan Harrison (Halifax). One great
granddaughter Jazelle Lily (Halifax) and many nieces and nephews.
Kenn was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Grace Muriel (Rhodenizer)
and her passing in 2010 was a life changing event for him. He was
also predeceased by Sisters Juanita Smith, Sheila Pompeo and Mary
Leblanc and Brothers Earl, Melvyn and infant brother Carl.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at J. A. Snow
Funeral Home (339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax) from 2-4 and 7-9 pm.
Funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 12, 2017 at 10 am
at Saint Mother Teresa of Kolkata Parish, 6032 Normandy Drive
(corner of Robie and Normandy Drive, Halifax), Father Andrew

SMELE, Edwin George
(28 Nov 1928 - 22 Sep 2017) - The Smele Family with heavy hearts
would like to announce the Passing of Edwin George Smele. Ed passed
away peacefully and is survived by his loving wife of 63 years
Eileen, brother Loren, sons Rodney (Diana), Jeffrey (Shelley),
grandchildren Byrant, Coral, Valerie and many nieces and nephews
spread out from British Columbia,to Alberta and Saskatchewan. Eddie,
as his friends called him was a true Vancouver kid, growing up in
West Point Grey hanging out at Locarno Beach, exploring the
endowment lands with his buddies, Ed spoke of Delivering Grocery's
in his neighbourhood, and good times at Lord Byng High School. Ed
enlisted in the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve During World War Two,
training on H.M.C.S Cayuga. After the War Ed entered the steamship
business in Vancouver, working for Matson Line, Bakke Steamships
Knutsen Line and Columbus Line. His work would take him around the
world. Ed raised his family in North Vancouver and he retired there.
Always a rock, his calm with a wink and a grin , he will be dearly
missed. Many Thanks to the Hospice Staff In North Vancouver, what

(Bob/Knobby), P1WS (21 Jul 1938 - 04 Oct 2017) - It is with great
sadness that we announce the sudden but peaceful passing of Bob, a
dearly loved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to
many. Bob is survived by his devoted wife Cas of 48 years and their
children Steven, Cindy, Louise, Bert, Blaine and Scott and their
spouses, 12 grandchildren, one great-grandson, siblings Laurel,
Berniece, Marlene, Rita, Kevin and their spouses as well as a large
extended family. Bob was predeceased by his parents Bert and Rita
Clarke. Bob was born in Daylesford Saskatchewan and joined the Navy
in 1957. He proudly served for 37 years which enabled him to make
many lifelong friends coast to coast. Bob married the love of his
life, Cas on February 1st, 1969 and they lived many happy years in
Shawnigan Lake before retiring to Ladysmith. Being an avid
outdoorsman, Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and most of all,
spending time with his family. He was affectionately known as
"Dump" to all his grandchildren. Though he faced many
health challenges, he continued to live his life with passion and
humility, always thinking of others first. He will truly be missed!
Bob was a lifetime member of the C&PO's ASSN and RCL BR 134.

(Willie) - Age 102, WWII Veteran (Navy) Peacefully on Saturday,
October 7, 2017, just short of his 103rd Birthday. He was married to
his late wife Betty for 74 years. He is survived by his son Richard
Richardson and his wife Susan and his daughter Heather Ann
Hutchingame and her husband Robert Hutchingame. He is also survived
by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Remembered affectionately by Audrey Johnston and family, and good
friend Helen Creighton. Willie Richardson was a Second World War
Navy Veteran. Willie was born October 23, 1914 in Reading, England
immigrated to Canada when he was 6 years old and worked for the
Canadian Government until he retired. Family and Friends are invited
to visit at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry 150
Woodroffe Ave. (at Richmond Rd.) on Wednesday October 11 from 12

(Ben), LCdr, RCN(R) - It is with love and sadness that we
announce the peaceful passing of Ben Sorensen, Q.C., at home on
October 11, 2017 at age 88. Dear husband of Joyce Sorensen (nee
Hart), who predeceased him in 2014. Loving father of Michael (Lucy
Vettorel), Jean (Dale Edwards) and Gordon (Elizabeth Coyle-Camp).
Cherished grandfather of Gordon's daughters Shauna and Maisie and of
Mike's son Paul (Selen Umul) and their daughter Jovi, and
stepdaughters Anna and Angie Dumoulin. The family would like to
thank the staff of Orchard View on the Rideau in Manotick for the
excellent care they provided. Ben led an active and interesting
life. He was born in 1928 in Glostrup, Denmark and came to Canada
with his parents, four brothers and his sister just before the war
in 1939. He met the love of his life, Joyce, in Halifax in 1950
while serving in the Canadian reserve navy in which he achieved the
rank of Lieutenant Commander. He attended Queens and Dalhousie
universities and was called to the bar in 1954, practicing law in
Kingston, then in Ottawa for 43 years. With Joyce he raised his
daughter and two sons, giving them an excellent role model and
offering them every opportunity to succeed. He was a generous and
fair man with a strong work ethic in his career and in his many
other pursuits. He could make anything, from knitting sweaters for
the entire family, to building homes, stone walls and beautiful
furniture. He was a great writer, a highly practical thinker and was
passionate about the piano. He loved adventure and animals. Most of
all, he loved his wife and his family, and did them all proud.

TAYLOR, Terry Byrne
(10 May 1943 - 08 Oct 2017) - passed away peacefully October 8, 2017
with his family at his side, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He
was preceded by his parents George and Eileen Taylor and son-in-law
Chad Caron. Terry is survived by his wife and friend Kathy, children
Darcy, Terry (Heather), Brian, Kelly (Brian) and Brenda as well as
grandchildren Nathan Christopher, Milan, Kayson, Braydon, twins
Tristen and Tyrah born on papa's birthday and Meghan and
great-grandchildren Damien and Mikah. Also survived by brother
George (Jeanette) and many nieces and nephews. Terry grew up and
attended school in Prince Albert. He had several different jobs
until joining the Royal Canadian Navy from 1959-1962. He worked at
Burns Foods and ended his career life of 34 years with Correction
Services of Canada. Positions were CX2, CX4 in the SHU Special
Handing Unit while escorting inmates from Millhaven Institution
where he was stabbed by an inmate and moved onto Staff College
Prairies in Saskatoon training new staff for 12 years. In his last
years he was Fire Safety Advisor working for Regional Tech Services
helping to design training courses for OSH which was used across CSC
System and procedures for Confined Space Entry and Rescue as well as
Fire Training Courses. Terry enjoyed golfing and spending time at
Emma Lake with family and friends where fruit drinks were the order
of the day. A special thank you to all the staff of Rainbow Village
for the care given to Terry. A Celebration of Life will take place
on Sunday, October 22, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at RCAFA. 602 Lynx Wing,
2407 Ave C. North. On May 10, 2018 Terry's ashes will be taken to
Victoria so he can go back to sea for his 75th Birthday. In lieu of

TAYLOR, Walter
Aubrey Stewart (Winks) (1926-2017) - beloved husband of Jean
Taylor (Hendricks) passed away peacefully on Monday, October 9, 2017
at the age of 91. They had just celebrated their 70th wedding
anniversary. He is survived by his four sons, Robert (Violet), Don
(Jill), Terry (Judy) and Warren (Betty), five grandchildren and nine
great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brothers Cleland,
Tony and daughter-in- law Patty. Walter was born in Cranbrook to
Rachael and Duncan Taylor in 1926, raised at the Tanglewood farm and
completed grade 10 in Proctor, BC. He went on to Toronto to graduate
from grade 12 and worked on the Great Lakes during the summers. In
1944, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy as a 17-year- old and served
on three destroyers protecting convoys in the North Atlantic. After
the war, he attended UBC before starting a 44 year career with West
Kootenay Power and Light in Trail and area. Walter was committed to
the community and was active with Scouting, YMCA, Sandlot Baseball,
Trail Well Men's Clinic and the Kootenay Music Festival. He served
with the Kiwanis Club for over 50 years and as the Lieutenant
Governor represented the Kootenays around the world. When Walter
retired at 65, he moved to Nelson and continued his community
involvement. He then moved to Richmond for 10 years, then Tsawwassen.
He was selected as the Legion of Honour by the Royal Canadian Legion
and the Army & Navy Club for two consecutive years. The family
would like to thank the staff at Waterford Residences and Susie's
staff at Ana's Home Care for their compassionate care. A family
Memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the

(1927-2017) - It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of
John Waselenchuk, of Edm., AB, on Oct. 4th, 2017, at the age of 90
yrs. Born in Smoky Lake, AB, John was the loving son to the late
Metro and Doris (nee Dwernychuk) Waselenchuk and loving brother to
the late Stefan Waselenchuk (1925 - 1940). John served his country
honorably in the Merchant Navy during WWII, later joining the Royal
Canadian Navy (Esquimalt, B.C.). John is survived by his wife,
Joyce, (nee Murdoch), of 70 years, and their 5 children, Darlene
(Herb), Britt (Pete), Darren (Bernice), Darrow (Lynn) and Denneva
(Shannon). John was a grandfather, great grandfather and great-
great grandfather to 18 grandchildren. The Waselenchuk family wish
to thank Dr. Fagarasanu, the staff of Unit 5 East at the Robbins
Pavilion, the staff at Dickinsfield LTC and John's personal HCA,

Emerson - In his 85th year, of London, Ont., passed away
peacefully on Wednesday, September 27th, 2017 in St. Joseph’s
Hospice in Sarna, Ont. Born in Port Greville, Clarence was a son of
the late Edgar and Ellen (McCully) Hatfield. He is survived by Wanda
Hatfield and their son, Edgar (Catherine); daughter, Catherine Tozek;
daughter, Deborah Delany (Gary); son, David (Susana); and brother,
Stuart of Pembroke, Ont. Predeceased by his sisters, Minnie (Clark)
and Geraldine (McCulley); and his brother Gerald in infancy.
Clarence was a stoker on the HMCS Nootka deployed during the Korean
War. He served in the Canadian Forces for an extended career and
then as a member of the London Police Association in the Court

age 94, North Sydney. It is with great sadness that we announce the
passing of Cecil Parsons, loving husband, father, grandfather,
great-grandfather, brother and uncle, on Saturday, October 7, 2017
in Northside General Hospital. Cecil was born in Cul-de-Sac, N.L. on
July 13, 1923. He was a son of the late John Tom and Naomi (Hardy)
Parsons. He went to sea as a fisherman at a very early age and later
joined the Royal Canadian Navy to serve his country during the
Second World War. He was employed with CN Marine aboard their
vessels until his retirement. Cecil was a member of St. John the
Baptist Anglican Church. He will be remembered for his love of
children, playing Santa, tinkering with wood projects, boating on
the Bras d’Or Lakes, enjoying his cabin near New Campbellton and
his other campsites on the lakes. He liked nothing better than to
'kick up his heels' to some Newfoundland music. Cecil is survived by
his wife, Classie (Keeping); his daughter, Jane 'Janie' (Dan)
Vernon; daughter-in-law, Judy (MacDonald) Whitman; stepsons, Calvin
(Angie) Keeping, Alex (Shirley) Keeping; stepdaughter, Irene (Roy)
Iannettil. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Chris,
Allison, Adam, Kent, Kim, Denise, Rachel and Michael; also by 13
great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren; by his
brothers, Roy Parsons, Roland (Donna) Parsons; his sisters, Flora
and Vera; several nieces and nephews. Cecil was predeceased by his
first wife, Beattie Parsons; his son, Marty Parsons; his brothers,
Joe, Harry, George; his sisters, Gladys, Mildred, Flossie, Mary and
Dorothy. Visitation for Cecil will be held 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in W. J.

CHERRY, William (Wayne),
Sonar Tech, CPO1, CD - age 76, passed away October 4, 2017 in
the QEII, Halifax Infirmary. Born in Davidson, Sask., he was a son
of the late Myrtle and Lennox Cherry. Wayne grew up in Chilliwack,
B.C. and moved east after joining the navy. He served 25 years as an
electrician and a Sonar Tech, retiring in 1982. He was the Coxswain
of the HMCS Iroquois and served on many peacekeeping missions during
the Cold War. After retiring, he continued to work for DND as an
Instructor and later as Division Commander at Canadian Forces Naval
Engineering School (Stadacona). He loved building ship models,
playing golf and dabbled in model trains and remote controlled
planes. He was a doting grandfather who treasured time spent with
his grandchildren. Wayne is survived by his wife of 48 years, Carol
(Brown); daughter Alaina (Brian) Jefferson; son Shawn (Carolyn);
grandsons Eric and Sam. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law
Thelma Cherry, and Betty (Dale) McPherson, brother-in-law Gordon (Bev)
Brown, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his
brother John. Cremation has taken place. A private graveside service
will take place at a later date in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. In

WEBBER, Calvin
Wilfred (Cal) - age 90, of Halifax, passed away peacefully on
Thursday, October 5, 2017 in Camp Hill Veterans’ Memorial
Building, QEII, with his loving family by his side. He was a son of
the late Wilfred and Lillian Webber. Cal joined the Royal Canadian
Navy at the age of 17 as many young men did at that time. He proudly
served his country during the Second World War as an officer’s
cook. After the war, he went on to teach carpentry at the Vocational
School in Halifax, then became a self-employed contractor. Cal loved
nothing more than his family, having a laugh, telling a joke and
enjoying a wee glass of good whiskey. He will be deeply missed by
his beloved wife, Marion; loving children; cherished grandchildren,
great-grandchildren; brothers; sister; nieces; nephews and extended
family. Predeceased by his brother and sister. A special thank you
to the staff of Camp Hill Veterans’ Memorial Building, QEII, for
their exceptional care and compassion. In accordance with Cal’s
wishes, he will be buried at sea in the spring. For those wishing,

Reid, C2ET - Age 81 of Hammonds Plains, passed away peacefully
on September 26, 2017 after a short stay in hospital with his loving
wife at his side in QEII Health Sciences Centre. Born in Sydney on
October 10, 1935, he was a son of the late John Alexander MacLeod
and the late Sarah Margaret McLean. Retired CPO2, Navy Electrician,
with approximately 33 years service known as RED DOG. He worked at
Promaxis, Irving and Douglas Securities to name a few. He was a
lifelong Royal Canadian Legion member and past president of Legion
Branch 554 Rockland, Ont. Andrew loved hunting, fishing, camping,
and always had time for family and friends. He always opened his
heart and home to others. He is survived by his loving wife, Carol
(Johnson) MacLeod of Hammonds Plains; sons, Andrew Scott (Lori),
John, William, Chris (Angele), Charles (Amanda); daughter, Anne
Marie; 14 grandkids, three great-grandkids; loving brother, Harvey
(Barb) of Sydney; and his nephew. No visitation. Cremation entrusted

LeBLANC, Leo Gordon,
PO2, RCN - age 83, of New Glasgow, passed away peacefully in his
sleep on October 1, 2017, in Richmond Villa Nursing Home, RCF
Section, St. Peter’s, where he was the President of the Residents
Counsel. Born in Margaree Harbour, he was a son of the late George
T. (White) LeBlanc and Mary V. (Samson) LeBlanc. Leo served over 18
years in the Royal Canadian Navy, retiring as Petty Officer 2nd
Class. He loved serving his country and traveling the open seas. He
fished lobster for awhile until he finally became a member of the
Michelin family for the rest of his career. He was a talented poet
to which his words had much meaning. An avid sportsman, he loved
fishing and hunting almost as much as his beloved Toronto Maple
Leafs hockey team. He was truly a devoted Leafs’ fan for many
years, showing the real meaning of staying true to who you believe
in. Leo is survived by his sons, Daniel (Katherine) LeBlanc,
Edmonton, Alta.; George (Garry) LeBlanc, Halifax; John (Heather)
LeBlanc, New Glasgow; daughters, Evelyn 'Edie' Le-Blanc, Spruce
Grove, Alta.; Patricia (Charles) Benoit, Pomquet; several brothers
and sisters; nieces and nephews; grandchildren and great
grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Evelyn
Melissa (Pye) LeBlanc; sons, Thomas and James LeBlanc; brothers,

Born in Hamilton, Ont., Bob was the oldest child of the late Arthur
McGregor and Doris (Camden) (McGregor) Manners and his stepfather,
the late Norman Manners. Bob served 35 years in the Royal Canadian
Navy, retiring as Chief Petty Officer 1st Class, Laboratory
Supervisor at N.D.M.C. Ottawa, Ont. He enjoyed camping, fishing and
curling. He was a Cub and Scout leader while posted in Victoria,
B.C. and Greenwood. Bob loved animals, especially dogs, beagles
being his favorite, owning and showing them to the championship
level. He was an avid collector of dog themed stamps, postcards,
Royal Dalton and Beswick china dogs. In recent years he and Carol
enjoyed going to Neptune Theater. His laughter will be remembered by
all who knew and loved him. Bob’s family was very important to
him. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 51 years, Carol
(Skinner); a loving dad to their daughters, Karen (Shawn) Pineo, and
Robyn McGregor (Randy Campeau). A proud Grampie to Kelsey Pineo (Nathanial),
Casper Pineo (Thomas), Cassandra Horne (Keegan), Alexandra, Olivia
and Vanessa Horne. He is also survived by his sister, Margaret
(Carl) Mountford, Hamilton, Ont.; and several nieces and nephews.
Bob will be missed by his feline pal ’Max’. He was predeceased
by his parents; brother, Donald Manners; and his grand niece, Blythe
Vento. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Donald K.
Walker Funeral Directors Ltd., 307 Prince Albert Rd., Dartmouth.
There will be a Celebration of Life at their home, October 6th, 10
a.m. to 12:30 p.m. following with a graveside service that will take
place at 2 p.m. in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens, 767 Main St. (Route
7, East) and Montague Rd., Dartmouth, under the direction of Elaine
MacDougall. No flowers by request. Memorial donations can be made to
the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or a charity of your
choice. The family wishes to thank Dr. McMullen, Dr. Paul Meur and
the nursing staff in the I. C. U. in Dartmouth General Hospital for

BERTRAND, Richard G., CPO1, Stores Tech,
OMM, CD (07 Jan 1945 - 22 Jun 2006) Rick was taken from us
suddenly on June 22, 2006 at the age of 61 years. Rick was very
proud of his 35 year and 188 day career with the Canadian Forces,
retiring in 2000. he was honoured to be awarded the Order of
Military Merit and the Canadian Force Decoration for his long
military service. Rick is predeceased by his 6 year old daughter
Nicole in October 1975. He will be sadly missed by his loving
companion Tracey Lochmanetz, her children Amanda and Matthew, his
daughters Roxanne and Andrea, his loving mother Edna Armitage, 3
sisters, 2 brothers and their families and by his many friends.
There will be 2 services to celebrate Rick's life, Sunday, July 2 at
1:00 p.m. at CFB Comoc 888 Wing and then on Tuesday, July 4 at 2:00
p.m. at the Esquimalt Legion. Donations can be made in lieu of

C2FC, 24437-E, RCN (served RN & RCN 17 Aug 1937 - 24 Apr 1972) - Born in Pembroke Dock, Wales on November 5,
1921. Passed away November 14, 2006 at home in Victoria, B.C. with
his family by his side. Dennis belovedly known as 'George' leaves
behind his wife of 59 years, Margaret. Daughter Ann (Gary), son
Michael (Linda), grandchildren Yvonne (Scott), Denise, Byron (Tanya)
and Tyler. Great grandchildren Samantha, Victoria, Jesse and Autumn.
Dad proudly joined the Royal Navy at 16 years of and served from
1937 until 1952. he then served in the Canadian Navy from 1953 to
1972. He found many battles with bravery and dignity including his
final battle with cancer. His courage has given us the strength to
go forward. Special thanks to our invaluable palliative care nurse,
Sue Blakely. In lieu of flowers, donatins can be made to the
Canadian Cancer Society or Canadian Red Cross. Services will be held
at a later date.

16998-E, P2, RCN - was born Dec. 14, 1924 in Regina, Sk, adopted
by James and Jessie (Adamson) of Glenavon, SK. He passed on quietly
and peacefully, surrounded by his family on Dec. 13, 2006. Garnet
was many things to many people - devoted husband, loving father
& grandfather, dedicated public servant, Gilwell Scouter,
sailor, and a respected and loving friend. Garnet's long and
amazingly prolonged battle with cancer has ended. He was predeceased
by his eldest daughter Myra (Ray), and is survived by his wonderful
and endearing wife of over 54 years, Eirlys; his children, Trevor
(Linda), Dilys (Gerry), Cameron (Carol), & James (Carmen), his
grandchildren, Luke, Adam, Jessica, Dan, Matthew, Colin and Ryan,
and his in-laws Megan (Bill), Glenys, and Nans. To Gernet, 'step'
made no difference. Many of his grandchildren are steps, but to
Garnet & Eirlys that merely meant they'd now met a grandchild
they hadn't previously known, waiting for their love. Garnet
spent his life giving to family first, friends second, and still had
so much left that he continually gave to this world and made it a
better place. He will be sorely missed by every soul who knew him.
We love you and will forever hold you in our hearts. Special
heartfelt thanks go out to Dr. Alasdair Polson, Dr. David Lintern,
the Hospice Palliative Response Team, the nurses from the Juan de
Fuca Home Support Team and the V1HA case managers for Home &
Community Care. The celebration of Garnet's life will take place on
Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006 at 2:00 pm in Gordon United Church, 935
Goldstream Ave. Victoria, BC. Reception to follow in the church

BOUCHARD, Albert
Erwin (Butch) CPO Tel, RCN - Born in Disley, Saskatchewan, on
May 24, 1920, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2007, at
Victoria General Hospital. Albert is survived by Joyce, his wife of
67 years, children, Bill (Lois), Joan (Brian), Jeanne (Gordon);
sister, Terry Legare and sister-in-law, Ethel Bouchard; 11
grandchildren, Bob, Cathy, David, Sandra, Debbie, Dan, Michael,
Michelle, Cheryl, Kevin and Richard; 14 great-grandchildren and many
nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents Alphonse and
Almeda, brothers Rene and Fern, sister Cecile Dwyer and
Granddaughter Shannon Herlihy. He joined the RCN as a teenager, and
retired in 1964. He was always very proud of his naval service,
holding many fond memories. Albert was a life member of the CPO's
Association, and am member of the Royal Canadian Legion. The family
thanks the nursing staff at VGH for their kindness and care to
Albert during his brief stay. No service by request; flowers gratefully
declined.

Alberta on February 9th, 1928 and passed away in the Kelowna General
Hospital on June 6th, 2007 at the age of 79 years. He will be
lovingly remembered by hiswife, Lillian of 41 years and his very
close friend, Arnie Banfill of Abbotsford, B.C. He was predeceased
by his parents. Cremation preceded a Celebration of Doc's Life which
will beheld at Bethel Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, June 13th, 2007
at 1:00 P.M. with Mr. Brian Jackson officiating. A Reception will

BILLINGS, Gordon
Wilfred, POQR, V17094, RCNVR (served 18 Jan 1940 - 13 Sep 1945) -
Born in Oxford Co., Ont. February 07, 1921. Passed away peacefully
June 19, 2007 at The Lodge at Broadmead, Victoria, B.C. Predeceased
by his wife Viola, Gordie is survived by sisters Shirley and Jeanne,
brother Grant and numerous nieces and nephews. Gordie served in the
Atlantic on 4 ships 1941 through 1945. After his war service, Gordie
worked for a short time on James Island, near Sideny B.C., in the
munitions depot. A career as a ship's engineer with the Coast Guard
followed and Gordie worked for many years aboard the CCGS Quadra on
the Pacific Coast as she collected atmospheric data for research and
weather reporting. A highlight of Gordie's career was the Quadra's
voyage to Africa in 1974 as part of the Global Atmospheric Research
Program. Satellite weather imaging replaced the work of the Quadra
and coincided with Gordie's retirement from the Coast Guard. We will
remember Uncle Gord with a smile. A terrific sense of humor and the
nicest man one could meet. Our sincere thanks to staff at the Gorge
Hospital and The Lodge at Broadmead. In keeping with Gordie's
wishes, no service will be held. If desired, donations may be made

courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Halifax, N.S. on April
12, 1944 and will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Linda;
daughter Allison; son Scott; his mother Marie; sister Bev (Steve); brother
Ted (nonie) as well as many nieces and nephews. Doug was predeceased
by his father William in 2001. At ge 18, Doug joined the RCN and
served for 37 years. A celebration of Doug's life will be held at

BEALES, Audrey Ruth
(nee Miller), PO, W1901, WRCNS (served 20 May 1943 - 06 Nov 1945)
- Born Audrey Miller in Toronto on May 12, 1922. Loving wife to
Leonard, who preceded her while still in military service, and
mother to Joseph and Thomas. As a young woman, Audrey joined the
Canadian Navy during World War II and served until being demobilized
from HMCS York after the war's conclusion. For the remainder of her
life she continued her love of the navy and was an active member of
the Ex-WRENS and the Canadian legion. For many years she was the
bookkeeper for the law firm Jackson & Co. When her sons left
home she spent a few years living part-time in Mexico and after this
period lived permanently in Victoria but continued traveling the
world. She role modeled a joie de vivre for what the world had to
offer and her love of people and places. In 2001 Audrey was
diagnosed with Alzheimer's. During the long struggle she fought to
be involved with family and friends and to partake in life as much
as possible. Someone once described her as, "a magnificent
battle cruiser, hit and sinking, but with guns blazing and flags
flying." On September 12, 2007, Audrey died of the effects of
Alzheimer's. The family would like to thank the staff of Oak Bay
Kiwanis Pavilion, Dr. Chris Lam and Mary-Lou Konrath for their
support. The day after she died a granddaughter wrote, "When I
think of her, I remember her warmth, generosity, directness, love of
debate & discussion, sense of humor and devotion to
family." Truly ...Heart of Oak are our Ships. A memorial
gather will be held on Friday, September 28 at 1:30 at the Canadian
Forces Sailing Association on 1001 Maple Bank Road (off Admirals
Road).

BARKER, William
Roger, CPO - Born Mar 27, 1935 in Lacombe, Alberta passed away
peacefully Sunday, December 16, 2007 at Victoria Hospice. At his
side were his wife Mona, his son Mike, and his daughter-in-law Sharon
at the time of his passing. Bill joined the navy at an early age,
and retired after 35 yeas of service. He enjoyed rock hounding, and
garage sales. He was and always will be the guy who was there when
anybody needed help with computer or any other problems. Everybody
he touched with his kindness were proud to call Bill their friend.
He is survived by his loving wife Mona, his three children, many
grandchildren and sister and brother. He will be sadly missed by
all. There will be no service. Please make donations to Victoria

1977) - was born September 26, 1924 in Winnipeg and passed away in
Victoria on December 29, 2007 at the age of 83. He is survived by
his loving wife Elizabeth (Betty); daughter Brenda and grandson
Christopher; step-daughters Kathie (John), Janet (Andy) and Donna
(Larry) and his beloved grandchildren Brianna and Kennadie. Frank
also leave behind four siblings, Paula Aulis of Vernon, Roy (Mortie)
of Kelowna, Joyce Barker of Camrose, Alberta and Ron (Cathy) of
Winnipeg. Predeceased by his sister Isabelle Lone. Frank was raised
in Winnipeg and, as a young man, served with the Royal Canadian Navy
where he retired as a Chief Petty Officer at the age of 42. Based in
Ottawa, he joined the federal government as a management consultant
in the transportation sector before finally retiring in the early
80's. Frank spent his retirement years happily in Victoria where, as
a dedicated golfer, he could be found perfecting his game at the
Gorge Vale Golf Club. He was an avid gardener, gourmet cook and
devoted horseman and animal lover who enjoyed reading and keeping
abreast of current events. Frank was a proud man and a perfect
gentleman and his generosity of heart and spirit was evident in his
daily life. He always had a story to share and his teasing and
smiling blue eyes will be greatly missed. Our family wishes to send
a special thank you to the wonderful staff at Victoria General
Hospital (6C North) for their exceptional care and compassion. A
gathering of family and freinds to celebrate Frank's life will take
place at First memorial Funeral Services, 4725 Falaise Drive on January

22892-E, RCN (served 01 Apr 1946 - 01 Apr 1966) - was born
January 31, 1927, in Calgary, Alberta, and passed away peacefully,
March 30, 2008, at home. Predeceased by his daughter Theresa and her
son Andrew. He is survived by his wife, Bea; children, Gerry,
Michael (Loretta), Rosanne, and Patrick (Leila). Dad grew up on the
family farm and he was utting in a man's day of work at the age of
twelve. At age seventeen, Dad joined the Royal Canadian Navy, and a
couple of years later met my mom, and that was the start of a life
long love affair that spanned sixty years of marriage, 5 children,
and 14 grandchildren. After leaving the navy, Dad worked for the
City of Victoria, and Saanich, where he retired. During retirement
Mom and Dad traveled a lot. Dad was a very talented woodworker, and
could replicate any truck or tractor, but his true passion rested in
Intarsa, and he created many incredibly wonderful pieces of art. Dad
was a true gentleman, whose warm smile and kind ways will remain in
our hearts and minds forever.

and brothers Jim and Pete. He served 25 years in the Royal Canadian

BROOKES, Munro
Charles (Mike), CJX139552, RN / C2WU, 9650-E, RCN (served RN
1933-1948 / RCN Sep 1948 - Sep 1963) - passed away peacefully on
January 8, 2009 at the Broadmead Lodge at the age of 91. He was bon
on September 21, 1917 in Perth, Scotland to Walter and Margaret
Brookes. he is survived by his wife of 60 years, Nina; sons, Alan
(Wendy) of Victoria, and Ian (Raie) of Melbourne, Australia; and
grandchildren, Sean, Kailee, and Kyle. Mike served with the British
Navy from 1933 to 1948 and with the Royal Canadian Navy from 1948 to
1963. he was a veteran of both the Second World War and the Korean
War. During WWII, he spent over three and a half years in a Japanese
POW camp. he was highly decorated, receiving letters of commendation
from both King George of England and Queen Wilhelmina of the
Netherlands. Among his many medals was the Bronze Medal of Honour of
the Order of Orange Nassau with Swords which he received for his
service on the British Naval Destroyer, HMS Encounter. Mike loved
soccer and ice hockey and every cat and dog he ever met. In his many
walks with Nina, he always had a pocketful of treats just in case he
ran into one of his four legged friends. The family would like to
thank the doctors and nurses at VGH, the staff at Broadmead Lodge
and the Department of Veterans Affairs for their care and support.
It was very much appreciated. As per Mike's wishes, there will be no
service and his remains will be laid to rest at sea.

where he fished for so many years.

HUGHES, William
(Bill) - Peacefully on October 7, 2017, Bill passed away at his
home in Winnipeg at the age of 91 years. Bill was predeceased by his
loving wife Margaret; his parents, Margaret and Thomas; his brother
Thomas and his sister Audrey. He is survived by his sister
Jacqueline and brother Howard as well as numerous nieces and
nephews. Bill had a special bond with his nephew Paul and his
great-niece Danielle who was his guardian angel. Bill served in the
Navy in the Second World War. He worked as a machinist for the CNR.
He was a member of The Shrine Khartum Patrol and had been an avid
golfer most of his life. Summers spent at Falcon Lake with family
and friends were cherished times, as were the winters spent in Mesa
Arizona. He always enjoyed his vacations in Hawaii. The family would
like to thank the caregivers Bill had at the Victoria General
Hospital during his many visits there. We would also like to thank
the home care aides and nurses who cared for him at The Parkway and
the workers who previously cared for him at Seine River. Without
them, Bill wouldn't have been able to stay at home. A private family

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Harvey. He was
born in Edmonton, Alberta on May 21st, 1920 and passed away on April
26, 2009 in Nanaimo, BC. Harvey was a Veteran of WW II and worked
for the Canadian National railway in Edmonton for 32 years after the
war. Harvey was predeceased by his parents Kathleen and Ted
Butterworth, his second son Charles Lee, sister Marjorie McColl and
brother Stuart. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 53
years, Helen, son Ted (Ava), daughter Allison, grandchildren Lee and

and his wife moved to Victoria in 1980 and after her retirement

Regional General Hospital and to the Paramedics of Nanaimo. Harvey
was a member of teh Atlantic and BC Chiefs and Petty Officers Naval

& Jan (Michele); nine grandchildren, many great grandchildren
and his sister Barbara (Jack). A memorial service will be held at First

BALL, Gordon Walter,
MMM, CD, CPO2 NCIOP, 33413-E, RCN / CAF (served 03 Jul 1956 - 11 Jul
1991) - Born on the 13th of jan 1937 in Moose Jaw, SK. Growing
up Gordon lived in many small towns throughout southern Saskatchewan
as the son of a CN railroad man. He graduated from Biggar High
school in 1956. On advice from a family friend he joined the RCN in
1956 leaving the rolling wheat fields of the Prairies for the
rolling Seas. Completing Boot Camp in Cornwallis, NS he was posted
to CFB Esquimalt; where he met the love of his life Dorothy on a
blind date at Memorial Arena in 1958. They were married in August
1960. CPO2 Ball (Gordy) sailed on many different ships and held
various positions throughout his 35 year Naval Career as a Radar
Plotter / Technician. he retired from the Canadian Navy 1991. A
sports enthusiast he enjoyed plaing and watching golf, hockey,
football and baseball. He was a member of the Pilgrim Cove Pacers,
the running club at CFB Esquimalt. he ran in many marathons and 10K
events. One of his greatest athletic achievements was being part of
the six man Navy relay team that ran across Canada for the Canadian
Navy's 75th Anniversary. family and his faith were his mainstays
throughout his life. He lived life passionately, embracing each day
with its hopes and challenges and captured them with his camera. A
consummate storyteller of family history and tales of the sea,
Gordon kept friends and family in stitches during many a family
fathering, or special occasion. His happiest and proudest moment
were always when spending time with his family. Service was his
calling as he was always willing, and available to help those in need.
On the 30th of May 2011 surrounded by his family Gordon finally
found rest at the end of his 7 year battle with cancer. He is
predeceased by his parents Walter Ball and Eleanor Louis Ball (Klockow).
He is survived by his wife Dorothy of 50 yrs and his Brothers David
(Arlene) Brian (Rita), children Michael (Marilyn), Eleanor (Glenn),
grandchildren Meredith, Meaghan, Joshua and Dustin, great
grandchildren Madeline, Dylan and Solara Lynn and many cousins,
nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Gordon's life will he held at
Central Baptist Church 833 Pandora Ave Victoria, BC on the 10th of
June 2011 at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the

- 20 Sep 1977) - passed away peacefully on May 25, 2011. He was
born in Toronto, Ontario on January 17, 1931, the eldest son of
Scottish emigrants Robert Henry Boyd and Charlotte Pollock
Barriskell. At a young age he joined the Royal Canadian Navy and was
stationed in Victoria, BC. In 1950 he married Loreen Victoria
Lesopoy and they had 4 children. Gordon, Jo-Ann (M. Art) and twins
Dennis and Denise (M. Lance). After retirement he worked as a long
distance trucker and then for Canada Post. For fun he liked to fish,
play cards and was a voracious reader. He is survived by sisters
Roberts and Norinne, all of his children, grandchildren Jodie (M.
Jody), Scott, Irene (Morgan), Josie and Cody, great-grandsons Chase
and Brody, and many nieces and nephews. Dad is predeceased by
our Mom, his loving wife Loreen, his parents and brother Robert
"Harry". Services will be held at First Memorial Funeral

passed away at home July 3, 2011. Survived by his loving wife of 63 years,

(Rob), Janet (Charles), and Kristine (Robert), 13 grandchildren and
11 great-grandchildren. Ken served time in the Navy and was a Korean
War Veteran. His joy was his gardens. Ken will be deeply missed by

1966) Passed away peacefully at Resthaven Nursing Home in
Sidney, B.C. on August 30, 2011. Born on December 15, 1928 in
Vancouver, BC. Pre-deceased by his second wife of 42 years, Mona, on
December 27th, 2008. Survived by his daughters; Cathy (Bill) and Jan
and his sons; Chris (Judy) and Paul (Maureen), nine grandchildren
and five great grandchildren. Cliff retired, a Chief Petty Officer
after serving twenty one years in the Navy and then worked for
several more years as a delivery driver for Sears on the Saanich
Peninsula. He and Mona spent summers at Island View beach and
enjoyed cross country road trips in their RV. For years Cliff and
Mona were active square dance club members. There will be no service
at his request. In memory of Cliff those so desiring may make
donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, 750 Hillside Avenue,
Victoria, BC V8T 1Z4. The family would like to thank the staff at
Royal Jubilee, the Cridge Centre and Resthaven Lodge, for their
excellent care over the past three years. He will be missed, we know

Victoria, Herbie served in the Royal Canadian Navy for 28 years
retiring as a CPO. All who knew him were charmed by his love of
life, sense of humour and big heart. A world traveller, golfer,
gardener, artist, handyman, coach and amateur cook; we will never
forget his 2 favourite dishes, "you'll get nothing and like
it" " and "crap on a bun ". Herbie loved to
tinker and fix items around the house, if he was not refinishing an
antique to give to family or a friend, he was fixing that 30 year
old toaster we all remember. His greatest joy came from spending
time with his family; Joyce his wife of 60 years, his 5 children:
Sandra, Brad, Dawn, Denise, and Randy, 9 grandchildren & 1 great
grandchild. Herbie we miss your laughter and unlimited love, we are
blessed to have had such a crazy old fart in our lives. A
celebration of life will be held on Thursday, October 20, 2011 at

Born in Saltcoats, SK on May 7, 1935; passed away peacefully at the
Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria on October 20, 2011. He is
survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Kathleen (Kay); cherished
daughters, Judy and Carol and step-sisters, Shirley Bradford,
Saskatoon, SK, May Bradford (Bob), Prince Albert, SK., Jean Heinrich
(Joe), Stenen, SK, as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives
and friends, He was predeceased by his parents; his stepmother; his
nine siblings and two step-siblings. Gabby grew up in Saltcoats and
began his musical career at an early age. He joined the Royal
Canadian Navy in 1955 as a bandsman (trumpet) and was posted to HMCS
Ontario Band and then the Naden Band. Other postings included
bandmaster positions at 3 PPCLI Work Point Barracks, CFB Chilliwack
and Royal Roads Military College. He played trumpet with the
Victoria Symphony, gigged with his band, "The Classics:",
performed solo as a one-man band playing trumpet, keyboards and
vocals. He taught many young people to play the trumpet and share
his passion for music. In latter years, he was a proud member of the
Hampton Civic Orchestra. He was a kind and caring man who loved his
family, his music and the many animals we've had over his lifetime.
Memorial Service will be held at Garden City United Church, 4054
Carey Road on Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at 1:30 pm with the Rev.
Michael Brown officiating. In lieu of flowers, please consider a

With great sadness, we announce the passing of Bob Bentham, on May
1, 2012. Born September 16th, 1922 in South Wellington, Vancouver
Island, and predeceased by his parents, Bill and Molly Bentham, and
brother George. Bob moved to Victoria before joining the Navy at age
17, and served 5 years in the Corvette Escort Fleet, where he saw
action in the Battle of the Atlantic. Bob believed the war was worth
fighting, even though it cost him the better part of his youth.
After war service, he returned to Victoria where he worked for the
Begg Motor Company, Motor Transport at the Dockyard, sold Wear-Ever
Cookware, and then drove bus for Vancouver Island Coach Lines. In
Parksville, he owned Highway Chain Saws, before retiring from the
Dockyard as a marine engine fitter. Bob loved yachting, and
especially his fishing trips. He and wife Evelyn enjoyed dancing,
cruising, golfing. Bob enjoyed puttering in his garage, and could
put his hand to fix anything for all or any who asked. Just like his
father, Bob always remained a true gentleman throughout his life. A
social man, Bob loved a good time with family and friends, and
showed his wonderful sense of humour even in his final days. Bob
will be sorely missed by Evelyn, his partner and best friend of 32
years. He is also survived by sons Rob (Donna) and Garry (Barbara),
and their mother, Lillian Bentham, and step-sons Dwayne and Vince
Greensill (Loraleigh), who highly respected their step-father. Pops
and GG, as he was called, also leaves grandchildren John, Craig,
Ashley Ramsay, and Bryn, along with 5 step-grandchildren and 6
great-grandchildren. Special thanks to Dr. Jong for his care and
support over the many years, and to the many staff at the Lodge at
Broadmead, and Beacon Community Services. A celebration of Bob's
Life will be held at Bob's family home, at 8092 Mahon Place,
Saanichton, on Saturday, June 9 from 1 to 4 pm. In lieu of flowers,

1945 - 22 Jan 1966) (13 Oct 1926 - 09 Dec 2012) - It is with
deep sadness that we announce the passing of Joe, dear husband,
father, grandfather, great grandfather, on December 8, 2012 at the
Royal Jubilee Hospital. Joe was born to the late Albert and Kathleen
Baur in Toronto, Ontario. His early schooling was in New York,
Philadelphia and St. Michael's School, Toronto. In 1944, at age 17,
he joined the Canadian Navy and almost immediately saw service in
the North Atlantic until the end of World War 2. Later in his naval
career he served in the China Sea during the Korean War. After
retirement, he attended UBC and UVIC receiving a B.Ed. He then
taught at Victoria High School for 22 good and busy years. Joe was
an enthusiastic curler. He was also a member of the Archeological
Group, working on numerous local digs and was keenly interested in
his View Royal community, serving on the Emergency Response and
Trails and Parks teams. He was instrumental in founding the View
Royal Archives. Joe will be remembered for his sparkling sense of
humour, dreadful puns, commitment to his community and his deep love
for his family. Predeceased by his son Tony, he is survived by his
loving wife, Louise; sons Colin (Dani); Michael (Allison);
daughter-in-law Mechthild; daughters Stephanie (Dean); Kathy
(Patrick); sister Joan; 13 grandchildren 5 great-grandchildren who
were the light of his life. At Joe's request there will be no
funeral but a family gathering to celebrate his life will be held at

(14 Mar 1941 - 05 Feb 2013) - It is with great sadness that w
announce the passing of our father, Roger Michael Burt of San Diego,
California. Drawn, as his brothers before him, to the sea at an
early age, spending many years with the Royal Canadian navy. He was
mostly posted to CFB Esquimalt before retiring to San Diego after
over three decades of service. Dad did very well for himself in the
Navy and took great pride is serving his country. We missed our
father when he was at sea, and did not always understand why he was
gone for so long, but with the passage of time all become clear. Dad
had an amazing life's journey through the Navy and was able to
experience many different cultures and see first hand for off
destinations that most of us only dream of including, Fiji, Tonga,
Australia and 20 times to Hawaii! At home on Tulip Ave, Dad was an
accomplished self-taught handyman adding on many additions,
including the back deck, carport and a cemented driveway. Dad has
many interests, including gardening sailing and golf. In his later
years Dad enjoyed his retirement in San Diego, working at his
business, Bay View nautical and enjoying the opportunities to spend
time with his grandchildren. Dad was also able to travel extensively
in his RV and enjoyed seeing many new sites as well as attending
naval reunions. Love you forever Dad and Grandpa from your children
Greg, Mike and Cynthia and your daughter-in-law Carol and
grandchildren David and Isabella, also step-sons William E. Kaskins
and Richard D. Haskins of Virginia. Pre-deceased by his wife Betty
Burn (nee Haskins) in 2010. Rest in Peace.
