BRUCE, Donald Charles, RCN - On February 19, 1989 at Victoria General Hospital, Victoria, B.C.. Born in Ipswich, England on May 3, 1924, a long-time resident of Victoria. He leaves his loving family: wife, Olive; four sons and their wives, Raymond and Glynnis, of Edmonton, Alberta; Barry and Laura, of Victoria; Scott and Barbara, of Victoria; and Jason, of Victoria; three grandchildren, Daniel, Graham and Kimberley. He served overseas with the Royal Navy during the Second World War and completed 36 years of continuous service, retiring in 1974. After retirement from the Forces he worked for the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce for 14 years. He will be greatly missed. BARNSWELL, Arnold Albert Humphrey (Barney) - passed away at Victoria General Hospital, Victoria, B.C. on July 7, 1989 after a courageous battle with A.L.S. Born March 18, 1934, the eldest son of Albert and Adelaide Barnswell of Victoria, B.C. In 1958 he married Winifred Cornish of rapid City, Manitoba. They have resided in Victoria, B.C. ever since. He served with the RCN from 1951-1976. His latest employment was with B.C.B.C. as an engineer. He is survived by his loving wife, Wynn; five sons, Bryan (Rose) of Maple Ridge, B.C., Wayne of Victoria, Douglas of Vancouver, Ian, David (Dawna) of Victoria. he also leaves his parents at Maple Ridge; one brother, Allen (Barbara) of North Vancouver; two sisters, Arelene Sheppard (Robbie) and Adele Admunson (Bob) of Maple Ridge and four grandchildren, Joe, Harley, Chevien and one week old Joshua Arnold; his father and mother-in-law, Robert and Ivy Cornish of Rapid City; also many fond nieces and nephews and cousins. LATOUR, Joseph Jean-Yves (John), CD, CPO WS / NWT, CAF - age 62, of Dartmouth, passed away October 21, 2017 in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born November 17, 1954, he was the son of the late Vianney and Claire (Parthenais) Latour. Jean-Yves 'John' joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1972 at the age of 18 as a Naval Weapons Technician. For the next 33 years he served with pride and honour in many of Her Majesty’s Canadian Ships, including Huron, Iroquois, Athabaskan, Skeena and Ville De Quebec. John also enjoyed many teaching positions at the Canadian Forces Engineering School (CFNES) teaching hydraulics and it was at CFNES that he retired in 2005. Retirement didn’t suit him well and he quickly found a part time job as a security guard for the Cole Harbour Place. As with his career in the RCN John beamed with pride as he patrolled the halls of Sidney Crosby’s home rink. He was a long-time fan of hockey and enjoyed everything about the game, he was even the coach of his son Dale’s hockey team. He often remarked that he likely witnessed many a future NHL player take their first tentative steps on the ice of Cole Harbour Place. Unfortunately failing health forced John to leave his security guard position and he spent his remaining years doting over his five cherished grandchildren, Yushin and Yuri Kim, Ethan, Claire and John Latour. He is survived by his wife, Margaret (DeCoste) Latour; daughter, Danielle Kim; sons, Dale and René Latour; sisters, Jocelyn Laganière, Lise Latour and Carole Latour; brother, Jean-Guy Latour; five grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A private service will take place at a later date.

PINNELL, Robert Sidney (Bob) - On October 12, 2017, Bob Pinnell at the age of 87, born February 9, 1930, passed away peacefully with his daughter by his side. He was predeceased by wife Trudy, and his late companion Katie. Bob is mourned by his family; children, Gerrit (Carol), Paul and Roma, in addition to six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and his older brother, Stanley Pinnell of Montreal. A very special thank you to the Doctors and staff at Pinawa Hospital, Betel Nursing Home and Selkirk General Hospital for the excellent care he received. Bob was always proud of his service in the Navy and in 1970, he joined the Royal Canadian Legion Stonewall Branch No. 52 / Lac du Bonnet Branch No. 164. He farmed in Warren, MB until the early 90s, when he moved to his new home in Lac du Bonnet where he lived until his passing. President of the Pioneer Senior Club of Lac du Bonnet 1998 - 2001. Member of M.S.O.S. Board (Eastman Council) 2003 - 2006, also a member at large 2007 - 2009 . Bob thoroughly enjoyed participating in floor curling with Katie at every MSOS Senior Games. He was especially thrilled to participate in the Senior Canada Games in Whitehorse 2004. With his wishes, cremation has taken place. Interment will be at the Warren Cemetery in the spring of 2018. He was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Leon and Stella (nee Regnier) Caron. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Fleurette (nee Bernardin), his parents, his sister Rosemarie Regan and brothers, Bernard and Roger. Dad was proud of having served in the navy, being a mechanic, a big brother, a good husband and father. He was a quiet man who will be greatly missed and will be loved forever. SCHNEIDER, Samuel (Sam), Telegraphist - passed away peacefully, at home, on October 14, 2017. He is mourned by his daughter Maureen (Ron Burek), son Dave (Jane Campbell), five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Sam was born on May 7, 1919 and was raised in the north end of Winnipeg. He served his country in the Navy during the Second World War as a radio operator. Later in life he was very involved in amateur radio as VE4KS. He and his wife Phyllis raised their family in St. Vital and Sam worked at Dowse Woodwork. Sam loved curling (at the Heather Curling Club), golf (first at St. Boniface Golf Club and then at Southside Golf Course) and fishing especially fly-in fishing at some of Dave's camps. Summers were spent at West Hawk Lake where they had a trailer in the seasonal campground. Sam was a member of Three Pillars Lodge where he made many friends. When Phyllis went into care at St. Norbert Personal Care Home, Sam moved to Meadowood Manor where he enjoyed crib, social activities and talking to everyone he met. The family would like to thank Bonnie for being such a good friend to Sam and to us as we cared for him in his last days. A celebration of Sam's life will be held Saturday, October 21, 2017 at Meadowood Manor Friendship Centre, 577 St. Anne's Rd. at 2:00 p.m. Pastor Dave Holland officiating. CARPENTER, Donald Joseph - Of Westville. It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to a husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. Donnie passed away suddenly on October 18, 2017 in QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax. He was born in 1935 in Dundas, Ont., to Clayton and Frances Carpenter. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy and was stationed in Halifax where he met and married the love of his life, Georgina (Gaudet), with whom he enjoyed a rich and wonderful life for 61 years. After five years in the Navy, he moved his family back to Dundas to work in the family electrical construction business with his brother, Ken. Georgina longed for home (Nova Scotia), so Donnie accepted a job with Michelin Tire Canada where he retired after 20 years. Donnie believed in giving back, he worked with the Sea Cadets, belonged to Royal Canadian Legion Branch 16, The New Horizons and The 55 Club. After retirement, he spent his winters in Florida where he became an excellent Shuffler participating in many leagues and tournaments throughout Florida. Donnie enjoyed curling, shuffling, card games, reading, and NASCAR, but the other love of his life was the many years he spent sailing in the Northumberland Strait. Donnie is survived by his wife, Georgina; son, Joe (Loretta), New Glasgow; daughter, Shelly, Halifax; grandchildren, Jason, Kelly (Steve), and Lindsay; great-granddaughter, Madison; brother, Edward, Troy, Ont.; sisterin- law, Shirley, Dundas, Ont.; and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind cherished nieces, Donna and Laura. He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Ken and sister-in-law, Mert. BELL, Robert Sinclair, RCNVR - age 92, of Halifax, passed away in Camp Hill Veterans’ Memorial Building, QEII, on Monday, October 16, 2017. Born in Bridgewater in 1925, son of the late Dora Bell, Dad served in the RCNVR during the Second World War on HMC Ships Moncton, Atholl and Vancouver as a Signalman. Following the war, he worked in the CNR, retiring after 39 years in various locations, the last being in Halifax as the Sales and Services Manager. He was a past warden of St. Luke’s Anglican Church Lakeside, Secretary to Trustees in Lakeside, Deputy Chief and Secretary Lakeside Volunteer Fire Department. Dad also served in the vestry as a member of St. George’s Anglican Church in Sydney. He was a Group Committee member of the Sydney St. George’s Troop and Pack, Scouts Canada. Dad was actively involved as a coach and manager in the Sydney Little League until 1966. He was an active member of St. John’s Anglican Church and was chairman of the 1st Fairview Group Committee and served on the council of St. John’s Anglican Church for a number of years. Dad was also a past member and Director of the Halifax Dartmouth Transportation Club. Dad was predeceased by his wife, Betty Joan (Dauphinee) Bell; his son, Kenneth, and granddaughter, Tracy. He is survived by his sons, Robert (Judy), Timberlea; and Gregory (Tanya), Ottawa, Ont. He is also survived by four grandsons and three granddaughters as well as three great-granddaughters and three great-grandsons. A special thanks to Dr. Smith and the angels on V4 East who provided Dad with exemplary care, understanding and service during his last years. SWIM, Minard George (Buddy) - age 92 of Bridgewater, passed away peacefully in the Veteran’s Unit of Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg on October 16, 2017. Born in Clark’s Harbour, February 7, 1925, he was a son of the late Clinton and Regina (Nickerson) Swim. Survived by his wife, Marie E. (Ross) Swim; daughter, Renee Swim; granddaughter, Kelly Frame; great-grandchildren, Irena and Belen Pettigant; sisters, Shirley Kelly, Gwen Redding; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sister, Eleanor Baker. Buddy joined HMCS Victoriaville in November 1943 where he carried out convoy duties from New York, Newfoundland and Ireland. He joined the Hydrographic service in 1953 to 1956. From 1956-1964 he carried out mapping surveys on the Mackenzie River. In 1964 he transferred to the Bedford Institute of Oceanography, Dartmouth, as a surveyor on several coastguard ships and the Baffin, carrying out mapping surveys of the Arctic. He retired in 1990 to Bridgewater. A very special thanks to the staff of the Veteran’s Unit of Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital for their compassion and exceptional care of Dad. At Buddy’s request, there will be no service. Cremation and arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater. MacLENNAN, Allan Ross (06 Oct 1940 - 17 Oct 2007) - age 77 of Kingston, passed away on Tuesday, October 17th, 2017, at home, surrounded by his family. Born in Toronto, Ont., he was a son of the late Rita B. Williams and Allan G. MacLennan. Ross served for five years in the Royal Canadian Navy. He retired as an elevator mechanic. He enjoyed woodworking and volunteering his time and was always very willing to help others. Ross was a former member of the Lion’s Club in Pasadena, N.L. He loved restoring antique cars and was a member of the Antique Auto Club. Ross will be sadly missed by his wife, Sandra (Tilley); daughter, Heather MacLennan of Lindsay, Ont.; son, Robert MacLennan of Ottawa, Ont.; sister, Ruth Rowley of Peterborough, Ont.; brothers, Neil (Sue) MacLennan of Carleton Place, Ont.; Don (Lynn) MacLennan of Barrie, Ont.; and Keith MacLennan, Ont.; grandchildren, Shelby Papp, Chloe Elmy and Elena Elmy; step grandchildren, Jennifer Elmy, James Elmy and Donna Elmy and several nieces and nephews. CONROY, Francis David - It is with heavy hearts that the family of Francis David Conroy announces his passing on October 14, 2017 at the age of 85, in Halifax. He was predeceased by wife of 52 years, Shirley (Burke). Born in Port Hope, Ont., on November 23, 1932 to mother, Raine (Brooks) and father, Peter Kelly Conroy. Raised by his sister-in-law, Doris and brother, Joe. This generous act set the tone for his life where he devoted his heart to his family. A proud and carefree father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, no moment was wasted when he was in your company. He travelled extensively both in his Naval career (1951-1987) and with family. Based from Shearwater, he served on the Preserver, Magnificent and Bonaventure to name a few. Then, posted to California, he helped manufacture Canada’s 12 Aurora airplanes; retiring as Chief Warrant Officer in Greenwood. He loved camping, reading, football, hockey and family gatherings. His memory will live on in son, David; grandchildren, Ted (Janet), Jeff (Maria), Jennifer, Alicia, David Jr.; great-grandchildren, Nick, Julia, Emery, Ryan, Abbey, and Jake; as well as countless nieces and nephews. WOODACRE, B. James (Jim), CD, CPO, RCN - Dad passed away in his 94th year in Northumberland Veterans Unit, Pictou on October 13, 2017. He was born in Trenton, Ont., on February 16, 1923 to the late Harry and Laura Woodacre. He was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor and sons, Bevan, Wayne and Blaine; also brothers, Cecil, Phil; sisters, Patricia Price and Sheila Bull. He is survived by sister, Toni (Jim) McCoy, Winnipeg; daughters, Diane (Richard Sherman), Elmsdale; Gail (Bill MacDonald), Myrna (Scott Aitken), Brenda, all of Pictou; son, Kendall (Ronalda), Calgary, Alta.; daughters-in-law, Ruth Woodacre, Caribou River; Lesley Woodacre, Williamswood; his 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Jim was 27 years in the Royal Canadian Navy, serving in the Second World War and Korean War, retiring as Chief Petty Officer. At that time he joined Scott Paper as an Electrical Maintenance Planner, retiring after 17 years. After retirement, Dad and Mom enjoyed many years of travelling to Cuba. The Veterans Unit in Pictou was his home for the last three years of his life. They have a special place in our hearts for the wonderful care he received from all the staff. BRUSHETT, Gerald, CPO, RCN / Lt (N) (LD), RCN - Died peacefully in his apartment in the Dartmouth Berkley Seniors’ Residence on October 12 , 2017. He was born on December 9, 1926 in Sackville, the only child of Reginald and Elfreda Brushett. The family moved to Halifax where Elfreda, a violinist and multi-instrumentalist, was active in the local music scene. Gerald played cello in the Halifax Baby Orchestra and was noted for his 'unusual talent, excellent time, rhythm and mellow tone.' He graduated from Queen Elizabeth High School in 1944 and promptly enlisted in the Canadian Army. Military life agreed with Gerry and upon discharge from the Army he thought he might see some of the world and, in his own words, 'I crossed the street from the Army recruitment office and joined the Navy.' Much of his early career was spent aboard ship and he served on the Shearwater, Magnificent, Bonaventure and Stadacona. He was twice stationed in the United Kingdom for training in Air Frames and Instruments/Electrical and it was during one of those early postings that he met and fell in love with a radio operator in the WRNS named Dorothy Whitworth. He was still young enough that his commanding officer had to wire home to his parents for permission for Gerry to marry the lovely English girl who’d claimed his heart. Thirty-two years of Naval service concluded with Gerry as a commissioned officer in charge of the aviation electronics division of HU-21 at Shearwater Base Dartmouth and then as a computer programmer at MARCOM from which he retired in 1977. He immediately returned to work as a computer systems analyst with the Nova Scotia Department of Social Services in Halifax, retiring for good on December 31, 1991. Every working day during his stint with Social Services, weather permitting, he walked from the family home in Woodlawn/Cole Harbour to the ferry terminal in Dartmouth and on to his workplace in downtown Halifax. Even after retirement his penchant for walking continued to be a vital part of his life. He also kept one foot in military waters, working each Wednesday as a volunteer guide at the Shearwater Aviation Museum. Gerry was an excellent squash player, a cribbage enthusiast and a terrible joke teller. The death of his wife in 2009 took the wind from his sails for a time but he found great joy in family and spoke often of the wonderful life he’d led and how lucky he’d been. He maintained a store of sweets in his refrigerator at the Berkeley which he doled out regularly to staff there and all those with whom he came into regular contact. He is survived by sons, Timothy and Paul, and daughters, Julie, Angela and Jane who wish to thank the Berkley staff for their wonderful care. There will be a visitation in A. L. Mattatall Funeral Home, Portland Street, Dartmouth on October 30th from 2-4 p.m. and a funeral in the Lutheran Church of Our Saviour at the corner of Portland and Hawthorne on November 1st at 11 a.m.

SCULLY, Frank Joseph, Surg Cdr, RCNVR - Dr Frank Scully, 46, Dies Suddenly - Senior Naval Surgeon Here Was Widely Known in City; Served in Two Wars

   Death came suddenly Saturday, in his 46th year to Surgeon Cmdr. Frank J. Scully, RCNVR, as he was making routine calls at the Western Division of the Montreal General Hospital in his capacity of senior medical officer at the naval barracks, Mountain Street.

   By coincidence, his elevation to the rank of commander was made known only a scant 24 hours before his death.

   Weakened by an attack of influenza followed by pneumonia only a short time ago, and attempting, due to the war and influenza epidemic, taks apparently beyond his strength,, "Frank" as he was known to countless naval and civilian acquaintances, was stricken shortly after noon. At midnight he was dead.

   Son of the late Hon. William E. Scully and Mrs. Scully of St. John, NB. Cmdr Frank J. Scully obtained his primary education at St. Francis-Xavier College, at Antigonish, NS, winning a gold medal in arts.

   He obtained his medical degree at McGill University here, in 1917 - enlisting and proceeding overseas immediately after graduation. He served on a hospital ship and at the close of regular hostilities remained broad with the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps to serve in Siberia where troops were maintained for a couple of years. On his return to Canada he spent a couple of years on the staff of the military hospital at Ste. Anne de Bellevue. When the second World War broke out, Cmdr. Scully enlisted in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve as a surgeon-lieutenant and at the time of his death was chief medical officer at the barracks, Mountain street.

   Promotions announced in July of this year brought to light the fact that Cmdr. Scully and his son, Lt. William Scully, had joined the navy together in 1940, had proceeded to active service together and on occasion ship passed ship, allowing father and son a brief glimpse of each other.

   In his work of safeguarding the health of Canadian youth in the naval service, Commander Scully was ever eager to stress the fine types that paraded before him, and to say a good word for Canadian youth and the senior service whenever the occasion offered.

   He was an ardent sports lover and was a member of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association and was for a time club physician of the Nation Hockey League Maroons.

   Commander Scully is survived by his wife, the former Camille Pacaud, of Quebec City; a son, Lt. Bernard Sirois; and three sisters, Mrs. Ed. O'Toole, of Montreal, and mrs. Thomas Dricoll and Miss Helena Scully of St. John, NB. The funeral will be held here Tuesday morning with burial in Saint John.

DIXON, Stephen Phillip (Steve), Sonarman, CAF - age 55, of Beaver Bank, passed away October 24, 2017 at home. Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late Charles and Doris (McLaughlin) Dixon. He was a sonar operator for the RC Navy, until his medical release. Steve was very involved in his beloved community of Beaver Bank, participating in the local Softball league, Knight of Columbus and the Beaver Bank Scouts. He was also very involved with the Dartmouth Youth Group. To satisfy his creative side, he enjoyed building models, woodworking and loved music, especially the Clash. Steven is survived by his beloved wife of 35 years, Kim (McFarlane) Dixon; sons, Thomas Robert (A-J) Dixon, Dartmouth; Aaron Dixon (Jennifer), Beaver Bank; and grandchildren, Kyle, Christopher, Jocelynn and Brayden. BURDON, Thomas Holland, LCdr, RCN(R) - Born August 23, 1919, Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, died March 14, 2013, Los Altos Hills, California. Tom/Dad/Grampy passed away peacefully while visiting with his son Tom A. and family. He was surrounded by many of his family in a loving environment during his final voyage. His unique energy, extraordinary wit and life force will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his brother Fred; his children, Dave (Brenda), Linda Cameron (Adrian d'Angelo), Camrose (Cletus Peters), Doug (Sharon Lowe), Tom A. (Eva Weinlander), and Carma; 17 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Tom was predeceased by his wife Barbara and his brother Roger. Soon after graduating from Saint John High School Tom took officer training at Royal Roads in Victoria and joined the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve. In World War II he served on corvettes and other ships that were famed for their courageous escorting of Allied convoys through treacherous seas during the Battle of the Atlantic. In 1941 he was part of the escort group for a 52-ship convoy when it was fiercely attacked by a U-Boat wolfpack, losing 11 ships. After the war he had a long career with Zeller's, first managing the Fredericton store, then moving to Head Office in Montreal and becoming VP Human Resources. He was a loyal company man throughout his career. Tom was regarded as a wise community citizen and served in leadership positions with the Boy Scouts, YMCA, United Way and the Lac St. Francois Xavier Lake Association. His counsel was sought and respected by many from within and outside the family. A lifelong learner and traveller, Tom was passionately curious about the origin of life, all aspects of science, ancient civilizations, general semantics, and the theories of economist Henry George. He was a proud Canadian and a staunch Conservative. He and Barbara created countless treasured memories for many at the fabled "Four Gables" and "The Base", the family's lakeside homes in Montfort, Quebec. No one left their home without a sense of renewal, rejuvenation and connection. The gift of these memories will be cherished by all who knew him. A celebration of Tom's life will be held in summer 2013. JOHNSON, David Sigfried (12 Mar 1942 - 25 Oct 2017) - passed away at St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 75. He is survived by his two sons Matt (Alethia), and Rob (Karen); grandchildren Keily, Maeghan and Trent; brothers and sisters in law Wayne (Anne), Bob (Rachelle) and Jan and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Kathleen in 1994; parents Ed and Sybil; sisters Iris and Karen. David looked after his in-laws as they aged out of love and respect for his late wife. David grew up in St. Vital in his family home on Inman Avenue with his mom and dad and attended Norberry School. Summers were spent at Grand Beach, riding the steam train to the beach. Many years were spent fishing in his rowboat at his favourite fishing spots. With his friends he enjoyed shooting guns at Goverment Ditch and fishing for crayfish in the Seine River. As a teenager he would drive around with his buddies getting into all kinds of mischief and trouble. Later he spent time in the Naval Reserves as a young man on HMCS Outremont. Dad told many stories of his time aboard the ship and was very fond of his experiences. David was a devout Christian and believed in Jesus Christ. David raised his family and was always there for his sons after mom passed away. Mom told him to look after the boys before she passed and he did an incredible job. He turned out two very successful and well respected sons. David took up flying, and enjoyed spending time at the family cottage he had built on Lake of the Woods. He ended up building several cottages at Grand Beach and Lake of the Woods and the family home in Lockport. Dad was a carpenter by trade. David's father was a carpenter also, and David was able to perfect his skills under his dad's training. He also spent many years installing drywall working with his good friend Garth. A private graveside Service will be held at Green Acres Cemetery. Donations in David's memory may be made to the CancerCare Manitoba or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

JOINER, David William (16 Jul 1924 - 20 Oct 2017) - It is with great sadness that the family of David William Joiner announce his passing on October 20, 2017 at the age of 93 years. Beloved husband of 64 years to Rejeanne (Jean) Cayen. Cherished father of Janice, David (Carol Ann) and Sandra (Richard Lott). Much loved Poppa of Cara, Katie, Erin, Lena, Kaitlyn and Hannah. Great-Poppa to Ivy. Predeceased by his brothers Albert (Bert) and John. David will also be fondly remembered by numerous family and friends. David served in the navy on HMCS Winnipeg during WWII and was a member of the Governor General's Foot Guards following the war. He retired in 1984 after working for 40 years with Energy, Mines and Resources. David enjoyed 35 years of retirement in which time he kept busy travelling, woodworking, gardening, creating stain glass windows for the church, playing bridge and enjoying summers with his family at his cottage at Otter Lake, Quebec. David was a faithful and active member of St. Augustine's Church since 1956. Family will receive visitors on Friday, October 27 at 9:30 prior to the Mass of Christian burial at 10:30 at St. Augustine's Church, 1060 Baseline Road, Ottawa. Interment to take place at Beechwood Cemetery, 280 Beechwood Avenue, at 1 p.m. with reception to follow. BOUTILIER, Joseph Allan (Joe) - was born September 7, 1945 in Regina, Saskatchewan. He died, October 24th, 2017 after a brief struggle with cancer. Joe was the son of Roy and Elaine Boutilier and was the 2nd youngest of 4 brothers. Joe grew up in Regina but spent summers in the Abernethy area with his Grandpa Symington, working for local farmers, breaking horses, and enjoying the Katepwa area. Joe joined the navy in 1963 and explored many ports of call including Honolulu, Malaysia and Kuala Lumpur. On joining the Navy, he first worked as a cook and later transferred into the administration branch, and later worked within both the Army and Airforce. Having known each other as children through family friends, Joe was re-introduced to Joanne Barnsley in January of 1965, and they were married in February of 1968. Joe and Joanne had a daughter, Leann & Son, Darin. Upon leaving the Armed Forces in 1977, Joe opened the radio station (CJNS) in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan, where the family lived until 1987. During that time, Joe also was owner/operator of Westside Service Groceries, Confectionary & Gas. In the spring of 1987, Joe, Joanne & Darin left for warmer climates and moved to Kelowna, BC. Joe opened a jewellery store here, called Westside Jewellers. He also worked in radio, (SILK FM) in Kelowna, and worked in Media Relations for the Westbank Indian Band then later joined the Westcoast Lumber Jack show as the Master of Ceremonies, where he travelled throughout Canada and also learned chainsaw carving, creating many beautiful sculptures from logs. Upon Joanne's retirement they moved back to Katepwa Lake in 2006. Joe sat on town council in Meadow Lake as an Alderman, was heavily involved in the Chamber of Commerce in Westbank and enjoyed contributing to and being part of growing whatever community he lived in, his motto was "always leave it better than how you found it". Joe received multiple community service awards over the years including Citizen of the Year from the city of Westbank. In 1993, he traveled with the MP from Kelowna, Al Horning, and a group of dignitaries from Ottawa to Turkey and Greece, where they were instrumental in assisting the Canadian troops in being released from Peacekeeping duty. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, golfing, and spending time with his family, most especially his 5 grandkids. In the last few years, Joe and Joanne enjoyed travelling to Arizona where they re-connected with old friends and made some wonderful new ones. It was here that Joe learned to create stained glass, which has become a favoured hobby in the past few years. Joe was previously deceased by parents, Roy and Elaine and brother Bert. Survived by, loving wife, Joanne; daughter, Leann Finlay (Bob), Grandson's Aaron and Tyler; son, Darin Boutilier and Grand-children, Alexis, Taiya, Paige, Allie and Jordon; brothers, Jack and Don; niece, Jennifer, nephews Glen and Wayne and many close friends. Celebration of Life to be held at Knox United Church, Abernethy, Saskatchewan, November 4th, 2017 at 2pm. Reception to follow at the Community Hall. CROSSWELL, Bruce Angus (26 Jan 1921 - 19 Oct 2017) - passed away on Thursday, October 19, 2017 at the age of 96 years. Predeceased by his brother Percy, first wife Lori and stepdaughter Gail. Bruce is survived by his wife Dorothy; children: Joanne (Alfie), Lynn, Regina (Darrel), Lesley (Horst), Terry-Lee (Rick), Tracy (Terry), Rebecca (Nick), Elaine (Roy), Angela (David), Marilyn (Monty), Candice (Kent), Sharilyn (Allan), Dale (Debbie), Darren (Shelley), Shohn (Holly), extended son Allen Wayne, extended daughter Rhonda Honda; as well as 34 grandchildren and 47 great grandchildren. Bruce was a man bigger than life and loved by everyone he met. Born on the prairies, he went to grade school until grade 2. At the age of 17 he was hired on by Milligan Bros to do horse logging. Upon joining the Royal Canadian Navy at 18, he achieved his grade 10 and then was trained as a mechanical engineer. When he returned from the war, he made his mark in several communities in logging; then started working for MacMillan Bloedel where he logged with Lars Sunstrom who re-introduced him to the faith of his youth. Bruce loved his God, Jehovah, and was a faithful Jehovah's Witness to the day of his passing. He worked hard as a faller until his retirement at the age of 65. When not working he had a passion for gardening and tried to share his passion with his family growing vegetables, corn and even peas just for the rest of the family, as they were not his favourite at all. Not only did he work hard weeding and growing the wonderful produce, but he also would save the seeds from the harvest in order to replant the next year. A Service will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 5055 Maebelle Rd, Port Alberni, BC.

GYNN, Randolf Jack Austin (Randy), Cdr (Legal), CF (14 Sep 1943 - 19 Oct 2017) - Our hearts are broken today. We have lost a wonderful and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Randy passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. From the time he was diagnosed, his motto was "illegitimi non carborundum", and he lived by those words until Thursday, October 19, 2017 at 3:35 a.m. He leaves to mourn his wife of nearly 50 years, Lyn, son Jeffrey (Rose), daughter Samantha (Peter), grandchildren Ryan and Madeline, the Riddell clan, and many friends. Randy's military career began at Royal Roads in 1962 and was followed by graduation from RMC, Kingston in 1966. He was selected for MLTP in 1973 and received his law degree from Queens University in 1977. The law was his passion and he realized his dream when he was appointed a judge in 1991. He retired from the Navy in 1998 after 36 years of loyal service. Not to sit idle, Randy became involved with the ex-Cadet Club of Vancouver Island, the Commissionaires, and various committees at The Union Club. Randy also enjoyed travel, golf, and following the Blue Jays over a dark rum and Diet Coke. Following this, he worked as an Iron worker for 3 years. In 1959, Jack joined the Edmonton Police Service, completing 30 years of service. Cremation has taken place. McKELLAR, Arthur Donald (Art) - passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Thursday, October 26, 2017 in Emerald Park, SK at the age of 95 years. He was predeceased by his parents, Donald and Olive McKellar. Art is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Audrey; children, Alan (Tereasa), Arlene (Dave) and Sharon; grandchildren Tabitha, Jeffrey (Alanna), Michael, Jen, Matthew (Sara), Jason (Kayla), Morgan (Carlene) and Ashley; great-grandchildren Jordan (Nicky), Jessica and Leighton. Art studied at McGill University where he received his Mechanical Engineering degree. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy during WWII in Canada and overseas. He was employed in the engineering field, farmed near Souris, MB and later enjoyed a lengthy career with London Life in Regina. PATRICK, Peter Runcie (18 Jun 1927, Stroud, England - 24 Oct 2017, Calgary, AB - passed away peacefully at the Rosedale Hospice on October 24, 2017. He was 90 years old. Peter was predeceased by his loving wife of 67 years, Audrey. He is lovingly remembered by children, Terry (Marvin) Aarbo and James (Maree) Patrick; grandchildren, Kirsten (Kahn) Aarbo-Guest, Katherine (Matthew) Blaschuk and Andrew (Alexandra) Patrick; great-grandchildren, Ethan, Micah and Jonah Guest, Abigail and Charlotte Blaschuk, Elizabeth Patrick. He will be dearly missed by sister Jean (Mel) Olson, sister-in-law Fern Moe and brother-in-law Ralph Skaien as well as by numerous nieces and nephews and extended family. He was predeceased by his father Peter Patrick and mother Mabel and stepfather William Miller. Peter immigrated to Canada with his widowed mother in 1929. They settled in Swift Current Saskatchewan. Peter joined the navy to fight in World War II at age 16. He served heroically on North Atlantic convoy duty. He returned to Swift Current after the war and married the love of his life, Audrey on August 9, 1948. Together they raised one daughter and one son. They moved to Calgary in 1950. Peter worked for many years in the electrical contracting and manufacturing community in Calgary. He was a well-liked and respected by all who knew him and was especially appreciated for his dry sense of humour. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff, caregivers and volunteers at the Rosedale Hospice for the love and respect that they gave to Peter during his time there. PRATT, Donald Allen (24 Oct 1935 - 24 Oct 2017) - At Credit Valley Hospital after a courageous response to kidney disease. Beloved husband, best friend and love of Joan for 56 years. He served 5 years in the Royal Canadian Navy, enjoyed a long career with Atlas Alloys, was a member of various community boards, and a dedicated coach and volunteer for youth sports. Don loved to travel and was an avid fan of baseball, hockey, golf and played piano. He was a kind, generous man with a heart of gold. He will be remembered for his insatiable wit and storytelling. BREEN, Gordon (Bob), RCN - of Calgary, age 67, passed away suddenly on November 2, 1993, of an aneurysm. Bob is survived by his mother, Nellie Breen; three brothers and one sister, all of Calgary; daughter, Judy (Peter) Watts of Cranbrook; sons, Pat (Carol) Breen of Okotoks and Mike (Terri) Breen of Elk Point; the mother of his children, Mary (Duke) Fall of Chilliwack; and nine grandchildren. Bob served in the Royal Canadian Navy for 25 years, retiring in 1970. The family moved to Peerless, Saskatchewan where they owned and operated a general store. Bob loved the outdoors and after his store-keeping days spent many years working in various jobs throughout northern Saskatchewan. He was proud of his pilot's licence and was an avid gun collector. In 1988 he returned to Calgary to be closer to his family and friends. A memorial service was held November 5, in Calgary.

BOUCHARD, A. Germain (Butch), Chief SBA, RCN (retired 24 May 1971) - Born May 16, 1927, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 26, 1993 at Victoria General Hospital, age 66, after a courageous battle. Born in La Tuque, Quebec, Germain entered the Royal Canadian Navy, Medical Branch, in 1945 and served 25 years on various ships and postings of the Pacific Maritime Command including peacekeeping duties with the United Nations in Korea. Upon retirement from the RCN as Master Warrant Officer, he worked for 19 years as a Public Health Inspector for the Capital Regional District (Victoria). He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. His presence will be greatly missed by his family, his loving wife, Beth; son, John (Debbie) of Ottawa; son, Fred (Iris) of Calgary; daughter, Suzanne Barron (Dave) of Coquitlam; daughter Mrs. Julie Larsen (Wade) and Lisa Patterson (Dwayne) of Victoria; grandchildren, Christopher, Jennifer, John, Ryan, Spencer Meaghan, Kristina, Michael and Taylor. He is survived by two brothers, Jean-Guy of La Tuque and Jacques (Louise) of Montreal; and sister-in-law, Beatrice Hotchin (Robert) and nephew, Tim of Victoria. Germain was very close to nature and enjoyed many hobbies such as his greenhouse, the wilderness, ocean and forest and especially prospecting. BONHERT, Gordon Alfred, CPO1, RCNR - passed away at his home on February 3, 1994 in Courtenay, BC. Gordon was born in Hanover, Ontario on December 10, 1927 to Oscar and Amy Bohnert. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy for 30 years and was a member of the Korean Veterans Association and Royal Canadian Legion in Courtenay. After retirement from the RCN he worked as service manager for Pacific Business Equipment in Victoria. BURGESS, Cecil Bertram - passed away peacefully at home on April 24, 1996. Born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan on September 19, 1915. Predeceased by his parents, Albert and Ellen Burgess. His presence among his family will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Patricia; son, Walter, beloved step-daughter, Stephanie and son-in-law, Frank; stepsons, Ron and David; 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Mr. Burgess served over seas during the Second World War with the RCN and was a long-time member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch $53, Sooke, BC and The Royal Order of the Buffaloes, Happy Valley Lodge #5. BONE, Alexander, PO - a native son of Victoria, passed away on July 17, 1996 at the age of 77 years. Alex, who was predeceased by his wife, Flo; is survived by two sisters, Elsie Burnett and Agnes (Bob) Templeton; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He served from 1940-1945 in the RCN in the North Atlantic and was a member of the Chiefs and PO's Association and the RCL Pro Patria Branch 31. Service of Remembrance will be held in McCall Bros. Floral Chapel on Tuesday, July 23, at 2:00 p.m.

BODDY, Frank, C2GI, 4788-E, RCN (served 01 Nov 1940 - 30 Sep 1962) - Peacefully on August 2, 1996 in his 76th year. Frank will be dearly missed by his wife of over 47 years, Margaret; daughter, Lillian; son-in-law, David; and his special granddaughter, Rose. Frank was a loyal member of the Royal Canadian Navy for 22 years and completed his working life as a civil servant with the British Columbia Government. After retirement, Frank served for six years on the Esquimalt Police Board. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Anglican Church, 1379 Esquimalt Road on August 7, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to Victoria Hospice, Chief's and PO's Association or a charity of one's choice, would be greatly appreciated.

BROOKS, William R., C1BD, RCN / CAF (retired 30 Apr 1976) - of Halifax, NS. Born 09 Mar 1932  Died 29 Jul 1996

BRYANT, Sidney Donald, C2ET / LT (N), RCN / CAF (served 09 May 1940 - 19 Jan 1971) - passed away peacefully on October 13, 1996, in the loving care of his family and Victoria Hospice staff, after a courageous 10-year battle with cancer. Sid was born in Edmonton on July 24, 1920. He celebrated his 51st wedding anniversary with his bride and childhood sweetheart Mary-Ina Bryant (Greene) on June 8, 1996. Sid learned to sail as a young lad on Sylvan Lake in Alberta and this continued into a life-long love of the sea. He joined the RCN in 1939 and served for 30 years in both the Pacific and Atlantic theatres leaving active service with the rank of Captain in 1970. he then worked for Quality Assurance at the Dockyard until he retired in 1985. Sid and Mary Ina moved to Victoria in 1950 where he joined the RVYC and CFSA. He was involved with Swiftsure for many years and officiated in several Olympic sailing venues. He loved the people and the life. He is survived by his living wife Mary Ina and their four children: Mary Ina and husband Phil Georgas and their three children, Hailey, Paul and Cheryl; Sidney Bryant and wife June and their three children, Jennifer, Stephen and Sidney, Gale Webb and her husband Joe Duff, and their children Gregory and Chelsea, and daughter Norma. he is also survived by his brother Edward, and sisters Marjory, Peggy and Norma. There will be a celebration of his life on Wednesday, October 16, at 4:00 p.m. at RVYC on Ripon Road. In lieu of flowers please donate to Victoria Hospice or the Canadian Cancer Society.

BUTLER, Cyril Norman, V24883, RCNVR / C1SN, 7757-E, RCN (served 01 Oct 1941 - 17 Dec 1970) - passed away peacefully on his 76th birthday. Cyril is survived by his childhood sweetheart and wife of 51 years, Mary (nee Fabris); their daughters, Valeria (Raymond) Phillips and Sandra (Clayton) Campbell; son, Douglas (Maureen); granddaughters Cinnamon (Cory), Marcie, Taryn, Jacquelin, and Stephanie; and great-granddaughter, Marissa. Cyril also leaves behind his brothers, Bert, Gordon and Raymond; his sisters, Lillian, Helen and Joan and their families. He will be fondly remembered by his many friends in Victoria and across Canada. Cyril joined the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War and served until his retirement as a Chief Petty Officer First Class in 1970. After leaving Naval service Cyril worked in the civilian ranks until 1986. In recent years Cyril was an ardent card player, spending many enjoyable afternoons around the bridge and cribbage tables with the friends he made at the Hampton Silver Threads. Cyril's family want to express their appreciation to Dr. Bain Spencer and to the staff at Victoria General Hospital for their compassionate care. No service by request. BECHTEL, George Wilson, P1WS, 29760-E, RCN / CPO, CAF (served 13 May 1954 - 14 Apr 1979) - passed away peacefully at home with his wife at his side, March 16, 1997. Survived by his loving wife, Betty, of 43 years; son's Stephen of Victoria; Michael (Karen) of Nanaimo; Daniel (Beverley) of Ottawa, Ontario; Andrew (Vicki) of Indian Head, Saskatchewan; daughter's Catherine (David) Erickson, of Stony Plain, Alberta, and Anita Yzerman, of Nanaimo; 11 grandchildren; nephew, Ken (Pat) Snider, of Bloomingdale, Ontario and Niece, Frances (Wayne) Staff, of Kitchener, Ontario. George served his country in the military from 1954 to 1979 in the Royal Canadian Navy, and in the Submarine Service from 1959 - 1964 in the Royal Navy. George was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, the White Ensign Club, Submariners Association and the C.P.O.S. Club. His military career led him to live in England, Scotland and Singapore as well as Esquimalt where he ended his career as a C.P.O. he was a farmer at heart and enjoyed the 23 years spent on the farm at Cobble Hill while still serving his time in the Navy. BEAUDREAU, George Romeo, CPO, RCN - a long time resident of Oak Bay, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on March 15, 1997 in Victoria, B.C. born on February 8, 1913, in Petit Rocher, New Brunswick, he was predeceased by his wife, Gertrude Julia M. (nee Campbell) Boudreau; brothers; Delphis, Azade and Jacques. he is survived by two daughters: Julia and husband, Thomas Lemery and Lana and husband, Clemens Dober; granddaughter, Lindsay; four sisters: Regina Cadieux (Claude), Yvette Turnbull (Kenneth) both of Montreal, Leonie Degrace (Lionel) of Petit Richer, New Brunswick and Alice may Theriault (Lionel) of Bathurst, New Brunswick; one brother, Richard of Montreal; sister-in-law, Mrs. Yvonne Boudreau of New Brunswick; many nieces and nephews. Joe (fondly remembered as the Cook), retired as a Chief Petty Officer from the Royal Canadian Navy, as a veteran, after 25 years service. BUTLER, Ronald Laird Foster, C2HT, 40989-H, RCN (served 12 Aug 1942 - 12 Aug 1962) (13 Jan 1913 - 30 Mar 1997) - WW2 Veteran, 83, East River Point, died March 30, 1997, in QEII Health Sciences Centre, Infirmary Site. Born in Halifax, he was the only son of the late Reuben and Maud (Hilchey) Butler. He lived most of his life in Dartmouth, where he worked with his father in the construction industry. During the Second World War, he served in the Merchant Navy and the Royal Canadian Navy. He retired after 20 years service. He stayed in Dartmouth and along with his wife operated Twin City Furniture Refinishers Ltd. for seven years. He was a member of St. George's Anglican Church, East River Point; Royal Canadian Legion, F.E. Butler Branch 44, Chester; Chiefs and Petty Officers Associations in Halifax and Esquimalt, B.C.; South Shore Naval Association; HMCS Iroquois Association; Naval Hull Trades Association, and the Merchant Navy Association. Surviving are his wife, the former Edith Nauss; sisters, Helen Robinson, Nanaimo, B.C.; Goldie Laing, Dartmouth; several nieces and a nephew. He was predeceased by sister, Shirley. BOWACK, Robert H. (Buster), C2BN, RCN (served 15 Jul 1941 - 15 Jul 1966) - passed away peacefully at Hospice, November 19, 1997 at the age of 73 years. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, great-uncle, great-great-uncle and a good friend. He was predeceased by his son, John, in 1996. he leaves to mourn, Helen, his wife of 47 years; sons, Robert (Vi) and Stephen; granddaughters, Amber, Crystal, Angela and step-grandson, George; sister, Mickey Taylor and sister-in-law, Anne Aitchison and numerous nieces and nephews. Buster joined the RCN as a boy seaman on July 15, 1941. Veteran of the Second World War and the Korean War and a member of the CPI's Association and RC Legion #172.  Memorial service will be held on Monday, November 24, at 12 noon in First Memorial Funeral Chapel, 4725 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC. BARRICK, Geoffrey, C1GI / LCdr,  RCN (served 05 Jan 1929 - 22 Mar 1962) - of Westlock, AB. Born 25 Jun 1912, died peacefully on 03 Jan 1998. He leaves to mourn his loving daughters: Corinne, Marie (Jordy), Kathleen (Jeff); grandchildren: Jason and Gary Swanson, Michael, Shaun and Jeanette Barrick; sisters: Gwen, Dorothy, Mary and Barb; brother, Cliff (Jean); along with other family members. Funeral services 10:00 a.m. Thursday, January 8 from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 701 Mann. Following which Geoffrey will be laid to rest next to his wife, Violet at Hatley Memorial Gardens.

BOWBYES, Albert George, C2ER, 21738-E, RCN (served 15 Jul 1940 - 15 Jul 1965) - passed away peacefully at Royal Jubilee Hospital on the evening of December 18, 1997 surrounded by his loving family. He leaves behind his wife, Lois, his sweetie of 55 years and his children, Alan, Linda, Gary and David and their families including the grandchildren, Marney, Michael, Michele, Kevin and Danny and his beloved sister, Edna and her family. KRAELING, Bruce John - On February 6, 2016, Bruce passed away peacefully at Deer Lodge Centre at the age of 97. Bruce was alert to the end and looked forward to daily visits from his loving wife of 71 years, Doris. Bruce was born in England to parents, Florence and John Kraehling, and they immigrated to Canada when he was eight months old. The family settled in a farm near Wilmar, SK, where his brother Keith was born. The family moved to Winnipeg and when the Second World War began, Bruce joined the Navy. He served as a communications sailor and fought in the Battle of the Atlantic in 1940. After serving for over four years, Bruce returned to Winnipeg and married his sweetheart Doris (Jones). He became a registered technologist and later received his ART certification while working at Deer Lodge Hospital for 30 years. He also worked in private practice as a cytologist and retired in 1980. Bruce and Doris spent many happy years travelling the world and spending their winters in Victoria. Bruce had many hobbies including his extensive music collection, short wave radio, gardening and handyman skills. He was continually interested in sciences, the human body, astronomy, new advances in technology and reading maps. Grandpa' always had insightful answers to his grandchildren on how the world evolved and operated. During his time at Deer Lodge Centre, Bruce enjoyed going to the cafeteria with Doris and looking across the courtyard to his old office. He was very grateful for the care he received at the centre where staff referred to him as... "a real gentleman". Bruce's family would like to thank all the courteous staff who cared for him and especially the nurses on the sixth floor tower. As well, a special thank you is extended to nephew Les Despins and his wife Donna and niece Roberta Harris for all their support in so many ways. Bruce will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his family, including wife Doris; daughter Marilyn (Alan); grandchildren, Lauren (Chris) and Alex (Jannah); and great-grandchildren, Avery, Nicholas and Lillian. EVANS, J. O. Bus - Born 4 August 1925 - Died Peacefully 1 November 2017 Dad was born in Canmore, Alberta and died in Richmond, BC. He was predeceased by his loving wife Peggy in 2010. They were married for 66 happy years. Bus is survived by his 4 children, Bill, Janyce (Chris), Susan (Jay), John (Viva) and by 7 grandchildren Yvonne, James, Melanie, Scott, Robert, Matthew and Leah. He is further survived by 5 great-grandchildren Jaime, Dana, Ivan, Gus and Alexander. Bus spent many years at the PNE working his way from "rink rat" in his teens to assorted managerial positions of buildings such as Empire Stadium and the Pacific Coliseum. In 1975 he and Peggy moved to Tsawwassen where they built a house and Dad became manager of South Delta Recreation Centre and shortly thereafter, Director of Leisure Services for Delta. He was also an active member of Kiwanis for many years. Upon retirement in 1988, Mum and Dad enjoyed boating, travelling, RVing and especially hosting family get-togethers in their home on Tsawwassen Beach. Dad was a veteran of the Second World War, volunteering for service in the Royal Canadian Navy. He served as a signalman on board HMCS Suderoy 6, a minesweeper based on Halifax. Funeral Mass will be at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, 3900 Arthur Drive, Ladner, BC on Thursday, 9 November, at 11:00 am.
