BRIMICOMBE, Robert Earl (Rob) - 61, Shubenacadie, passed away surrounded by family members with an abundance of love on March 22, 2011, in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Born in Truro, March 28, 1949, he was the son of the late Robert Henry and Florence Daphne (Crockett) Brimicombe. He was a devoted father, grandfather and brother. Robert retired after serving 29 years in the Royal Canadian Navy. Rob enjoyed many things including playing darts, cards, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed spending time at his hunting camp with family and friends. He was a past president of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch III, Shubenacadie. Rob is survived by his loving children, sons Jim Brimicombe (Shelly), Waverley; Colin Brimicombe (Natalie), Enfield; daughter Becky Brimicombe (Darin Barbrick), Shubenacadie; grandchildren Kiana, Kenzie, Kamryn, Ashlyn and Ava; siblings Jacqueline (John Hann), ON; Mike Brimicombe, ON; Paul Brimicombe (Donna), ON; Jean (Bruce) Harvey, Shubenacadie; Susan (Allen) Gill, Urbania. He was predeceased by an infant brother Frederick Brimicombe. Visitation 7-9 pm, Thursday with a Legion service at 7pm. DAWE, James Bernard (Jimmy), C2RM, RCN/C.A.F. - Sable River, passed away on January 28, 2018. I was born in South Bar on August 4, 1938, the eldest of eight children to Harold A. Dawe and Alice G. (Young) Dawe. I attended Holy Redeemer School in Whitney Pier and New Victoria High, before enlisting in the R.C.N. in 1955. I enjoyed a very fulfilling 33-year career as a Radio Communicator/ Technician and retired a C.P.O. in 1988, having served in 14 ships and establishments. I worked as a Commissionaire at CFS Shelburne from 1990 until 1995. I joined the Masonic Lodge in 1995, Albert No. 30 in Shelburne, then transferred to Zetland No. 9 in Liverpool in 1996. I also joined Rossignol No. 6 Chapter of the Royal Arch; EBN Cocohran Council of Royal and Select Masters and W.G. Young Royal Ark Mariner's Lodge. I served in the East in all four concordant bodies, twice in Zetland, where I received the Meritorious Service Medal. I served as District Grand Director of Ceremonies for the Blue Lodge as well as Grand Master of the 3rd Veil in Provincial Executive Royal Arch Masons, both for one year. I was a member of the Shelburne Kinsmen Club for 22 years and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for 50 years. I kept in regular contact with my shipmates through membership in the Atlantic Chief and Petty Officers Association in Halifax as well as the Admiral Desmond Piers Naval Association in Bridgewater. My principal hobby has been my woodworking shop from which I spent many happy hours renovating three homes and various other projects. I have been very happily married to Margaret Nelson-Dawe for 44 years and we were blessed to raise five wonderful children: Kathy (John), Vicky (Bruce), Marla (Doug), Tony (Bonnie) and Julia (Jamie). My wonderful family grew to include nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. My siblings are Ron (Linda), Winnie Roy, Terry (Sandra), Harold (Louise), Sharon Doke, Ken and Robert (Joanne). At the end of my life I ask for compassion from those I have wronged. I sincerely regret and apologize for any and all injury I have caused through my selfishness and thoughtlessness. I thank the good Lord for the many wonderful friends I have enjoyed and for those I have loved and who have loved me. Please pray for me one and all. Cremation has taken place under the direction of H.M. Huskilson's Funeral Home, Shelburne. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, January 31st from 7-9 p.m. in H.M. Huskilson's Funeral Home, Shelburne. A memorial service will take place on Thursday, February 1st at 11 a.m. in St. Thomas Roman Catholic Church, Shelburne. Family flowers only. REID, William Grant, Fire Controlman, RCN / C.A.F. - Died Aug 2017. William Grant Reid, after a sixteen year courageous battle with cancer, passed peacefully surrounded by his loving family Wednesday August 30, 2017 at Hospice Simcoe. He will be lovingly remembered by Cheryl his wife of nearly 30 years, his daughters Sarah and Kelli, his grandchildren Addison, Jacob, Reid and Lucy, his nieces, nephews, sisters, and brother as well as a large circle of relatives and friends, co-workers. Grant was a proud Navy veteran, police officer, hunter and motorcycling enthusiast. He will be greatly missed by all. A Celebration of Life for Grant was held Sunday Sept 4 from 1-4 at the Stroud Curling Club, 7883 Yonge St, Innisfil. Dress code: Hawaiian shirts or bright clothes. It truly is a celebration!

CARTER, Harry (Jack), CPO2, NS - 68, Dartmouth, passed away suddenly at home Friday, February 29, 2008. Born in London, Ont., he was a son of the late Violet Hawkes, and was raised by his aunt, Elaine. Jack was a Chief Storesman in the Royal Canadian Navy 1958-1990. A dedicated husband, father, grandfather with many friends. An avid sportsman who was a member  of Run Nova Scotia, he was inducted into the C.F. Sports Hall of Fame for boxing for the following accomplishments: Atlantic Command Lightweight Champion, two-time Canadian Featherweight Champion, Canadian Lightweight Champion Finalist, World Featherweight Championship Finalist. With a professional record 44 fights 39 wins, three losses and two draws. He was also a coach for his grandson which he enjoyed immensely. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Deanna Carter, Dartmouth; children, Reginald (Diane) Johnson, Shelley (Art) Boutilier, Joe (Nancy), Jacklyn (Reg) MacKinnon, John (Judy), Amanda (Terry) Creelman, Angela (Scott) Lyons; adopted son, Ken (Dawn); brother, David Benstead; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; special companions, Sam and Tyson. He was predeceased by his brother, Peter. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth, where visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday. LEAL, Ernest Reginald (Ernie), C2ERA, RCN/C.A.F. - Born January 12, 1937, to Ernest Frank and Margaret Phyllis Leal) Reilly) in Hamilton, Ont., where he spent his first 17 years and met his future wife. In 1954 Ernie joined the Royal Canadian Navy under the Ordinary Seaman Apprenticeship Program (OSAP) graduating as a PO2ER3 and was posted to Halifax, where he spent almost his entire 25 year career before retiring in 1979 with the Rank of CPO2, "ERA not a stoker" (his words). He served on many HMC ships including the aircraft carrier Bonaventure. After retiring he worked for the Halifax Shipyards and then the Saint John Shipyards Ltd. on the Canadian Patrol Frigate project. His final employer was the Corps of Commissionaires working at the Carleton Center Halfway House. He married his wife Beverly (Burrows) in Hamilton in 1957. The first of three children, Michael, was born in 1959, with David following in 1962 and Karen in 1963. Ernie joined the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 160 while it was in its infancy and spent many many hours, with other members, renovating its various temporary locations before finally settling in its present 703 Main St. building. He was an avid reader and never missed an opportunity to do the crossword puzzles from the local papers. He passed on his love of words to all his children and grandchildren. he also spent many hours playing cards with various members of his family was was only too willing to hand out a lesson in 'cardology' (one of Dad's many words). Ernie is survived by his loving wife, Bev; son, Michael (Tracy); grandchildren, Kathryn and Rachel; son, David (Donna); grandchildren, Brian, Natasha, Daniel, Heather and Tanya; daughter, Karen (Bill); grandchildren, Christopher, Jessica and Andrew; sisters, Suzanne (Wayne), Judy and Marilyn (Martin). He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Jim and sister, Barbara. Ernie passed away peacefully July 3, 2009. Thank you to the nurses and doctors of the Halifax Infirmary Cardiovascular ICU for all their efforts. SHELTON, John Robert, CPO1, RCN/ C.A.F. - Mr. John Robert Shelton, husband of Mollie Irene (Green) Shelton of St. George, N.B., passed away unexpectedly at his residence on January 23, 2007. Born in Ingersoll, Ont., he was a son of the late John and Helen (MacLagan) Shelton. A loving husband, father, grandfather and brother, John is survived by his wife, Mollie; sons, John Jr., (Jessie), Halifax; David (Renata), Annapolis, Md.; Thomas (Jana), Oak Bay, N.B.; and Gary Shelton, Dartmouth; daughters, Judy Shelton, Chilliwack, B.C.; Joanne (Gerry) Flagg, Grand Manan, N.B.; and Lori (Mike) Shelton-Krewski, Ottawa, Ont; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Janet Russell, Pocologan, N.B.; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Helen, and by brothers, Gordon and James. Known as Dick in the local community, he was a well-known and respected man. Dick was a Chief Warrant Officer in the Royal Canadian Navy for 30 years. After leaving the navy he began working at Saint John Shipbuilding until his retirement in 1989. A Masonic and Eastern Star service will be held in St. George Funeral Home, 26 Portage St., St. George, N.B., on Friday at 6:30 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. respectively, in the Gary E. Waycott Memorial Chapel. The funeral service will be held in the chapel on Saturday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Lorne MacLeod officiating. CALDWELL, John Heron Ordinary Signalman, V5823, RCNVR - from Bedford, born on November 13, 1916 and died on April 24, 1998. He will be greatly missed by his wife Madeleine (Caron) a son, John Gordon (Kimberley Roy) a daughter, Sherley (Réjean Archambault) of Ste-Julie as well as his four beloved grandchildren, Jessie, Thomas, Johnathan and Matthew, he is also survived by his sister Constance Mudie of Farnham. John (jack) served in the Royal Canadian Navy on HMCS Weyburn for five years during World War II, he was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #82 of Philipsburg, Quebec. He worked for the Canadian Pacific Railways over a period of thirty-five years in Montreal, Farnham, Newport and Richford, VT. A memorial funeral service will be held on Monday, May 4, 1998 at 4 p.m. at the Dion's Funerals Home, 215 River Street, Bedford, visitation from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

ROBERTSON, James Everett, CPO Shipwright, RCNVR - The death occurred at Murray Harbour on February 13, 1988 of J. Everett Robertson in his 79th year. He was born in Murray Harbour, the son of the late James and Isabel Robertson. During World War II he served in the Merchant Navy and the RCNVR risking to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He was a well known carpenter and a builder of fishing boats. He also served as Postmaster in Murray Harbour for several years. He was a member of Albert Masonic Lodge in Shelburne, Nova Scotia. His wife, Muriel Buell, predeceased him in 1978. He will be sadly missed by his son Jim; daughters Lorna, Connie and Evie; grandchildren Ian Robertson; David, Glen, James, Lorne, Barbara and Michelle Sanders and Ellen Douglas. He is also survived by his sisters Annie Gosbee and Mae Beck and his brothers Raymond and Preston Robertson as well as a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters PEarl and Margaret and his brother Stewart. The funeral was from the MacKinnon Funeral Home in Montague with interment in Murray Harbour Cemetery. The Reverend Roger MacPhee of Belfast Presbyterian Church officiated. Masonic services were held by members of St. Andrew's Lodge of Montague. Pallbearers were Elmer Brehaut, Wheaton Gosbee, Victor Gosbee, Bert Jordan, Elmer White and Lester White.

His career in the Merchant Navy was short but eventful. He made one trip from Halifax bound for the Clyde on the tanker Frederick S. Fales, convoy HX-72. The trip was cut short by a couple of torpedoes from U 100 which sank the Frederick S. Sales in the Atlantic Ocean west of County Donegal, Ireland.. The attack was not unexpected as the U Boat pack had attacked the convoy the previous night. He said that he had finished his watch on the bridge and was in his cabin fully dressed with his bag packed. (Maybe he was a bit optimistic as I don’t believe that he abandoned ship with his bag.) She was on her way to the bottom about 5 minutes after being hit and he didn’t get into a lifeboat and ended up hanging on to a float until they were picked up sometime the next day. However he did make it to the Clyde as the survivors were landed at Greenock. He returned to Canada on a Dutch ship Edam and joined the RCNVR as a shipwright. At his funeral, one of his pallbearers, Bert Jordan, who is from our village, was also a sailor, said his ship docked in Londonderry in the middle of the night with the other ships from the escort group. The next morning he looked over at the Prince Rupert as they were alongside each other and he spotted my father hanging his clothes to dry. STEWART, Glen, RCN (served 1955-1956) - Born 1933  Died 1958.  After graduating High School, Glen attended the Radio College of Canada. On completion of his course and graduation he joined the RCN and went to HMCS Cornwallis for New Entry training in 1955.  While at Cornwallis he became stricken with a blood borne disease (believed to be Hepatitis).  He remained in hospital until medically released in 1956. With treatment, Glen survived until 1958 - a young man who took the oath to serve his country and passed too early in life.

McPHEE, George Lorimer, Lt, RCNVR - Rev. George Lorimer - While in the loving care of family on January 25, 2011 at 87 years of age. Beloved husband of 65 years to Audrey Jean (nee Magrath). Loving father of Marilyn and Joe Czachor, Carol and Rainer Schindler, Marjorie and Nello Paolini, George and Janice McPhee, Bradley and Pat McPhee. Grandpa of Lesley, David, Nina, Michaela, Jason, Meghan, Angie, Khrystye, Sante, Kelly, Meredith, Heather, Melina, Joshua, Madeline and great-grandpa of Noah, Mya, Emma, Audrey, Max, Hayden, Everett, Issac, Rebecca, Aiden, Emma, Adrienne, Evan, Ava, Mia, Brett, Ella, Sofia, and Adriana. Predeceased by sisters Peggy Gillespie and Mary Essery. Rev. George was a veteran of WWII serving with the Royal Navy as a Submarine Lieutenant. He retired from Chrysler Canada in 1978 as Manager of Salaried Personnel. In 1982 he graduated from the University of Toronto and was Ordained as a United Church Minister. Rev. George served many congregations across Ontario until September 2010. He was an avid reader, active in the Boy Scouts and enjoyed his summers at his cottage in Tobermory. Friends are invited to join the family on Saturday, February 19, 2011 after 10am followed by Memorial Service 12 noon at Tecumseh United Church 333 Lacasse Blvd. Tecumseh, Rev. ADAMS, Alan Alexander (22 Jan 1924 - 15 Jan 2018) - passed away peacefully, after a brief illness, on January 15, 2018, in Courtenay, BC, with family by his side. He was predeceased by his wife Florence and brother Ray. Family members left to mourn: sister Marion (Art) Ferguson; daughters, Judith (George) Webster, June (Alan) Wade; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. Dad lived a very full life surrounded by family and friends. He was born on January 22, 1924, and grew up in the Wolseley neighbourhood of Winnipeg. He was active in musicals, bands and sang in many choirs. During high school he played the cello, which he continued with in the University Symphony Orchestra. He joined the Westminster Church and it was there that he met and married his wife Florence Erickson. After marriage, they moved to St. Vital where they had two daughters, Judith and June. They joined Regents Park United Church, where Dad was an accomplished singer and baritone soloist in the choir. He sang at many weddings and funerals and produced two CD's during the last 20 years of his life that the family all cherish. Upon moving to Comox in 2007, he joined the choir at his assisted living residence and continued his solo career until 2017. In 1941, Dad signed up with the Navy and served on the frigate HMCS Prince Rupert. The military doctor noted that Dad had "above average night vision" and was assigned to the "crow's nest" for night watch duty! After returning from military service, he completed his last two years of law school and was called to the Bar on October 1, 1947. Dad and Mum were married in 1950. Dad practiced law with Tupper & Adams, from 1947 to 2005. He was President of the Canadian Bar Association from 1979 to 1980. He gave of his time and legal talents to numerous people over the course of his career and is fondly remembered by many colleagues as a true mentor. The major passion of Dad's life was his family and extended family. Dad and Mum hosted numerous parties over the years and were loved by all. There were many happy times at the family cottage in Matlock and later at Sioux Narrows. Dad loved swimming and boating and was very patient with all of the kids teaching them how to water ski! Every year, Dad organized a "cousins curling event" that we all loved. Dad was a member of the Law Society of Manitoba, Manitoba and Canadian Bar Associations, Scottish Rite, and a founding member of the Rotary Club of St. Boniface / St. Vital. He also belonged to Westminster and Regents Park Churches and served on many Boards over the years. In October of 2017, Dad moved from his residence at "The Berwick" to "Glacier View Lodge" in Courtenay. We will miss Dad dearly, and especially for the many acts of kindness that he practiced on a daily basis. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the charitable organization of your choice. MADDEN, Edwin Gorden (MEDINSKI)- 91 of Winnipeg and Stonewall, MB, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loving family members on January 28, 2018. He has left to mourn and remember, his wife of 69 years, Joyce, son, Gregory (Angela) Madden, daughter, Deborah (James) O'Neil, grandchildren Kelly Pynenburg, Erin O'Neil, Michael O'Neil, Owen (Cheryl) Madden, Garth (Lisa) Madden and Dirk (Michelle) Madden, nine great-grandchildren, sister Joyce Lamont of Vancouver and niece and nephews. He was predeceased by parents John and Amelia Medinski, step-father Walter Martyniuk, his youngest daughter Denise Pynenburg and brothers Edward Medinski and Cal (Rudy) Madden. Dad was born in Winnipeg on September 21, 1926. He served in the Canadian Navy during the Second World War and the American Army during the Korean Occupation of 1945. He lived in Hamilton, ON. after the war and in Stonewall, MB. Dad was a long time (45 years) member of the Stonewall Legion Branch 52 and liked to reminisce with fellow legion members. Dad was also very interested in Unions, being a political activist, and woodworking spending many an hour at each. The family would like to thank the nurses and support workers at Deer Lodge Centre Tower 6 for their kind and considerate care during his stay. Is it very much appreciated. Thank you. BRILL, Rosslyn (Jack), Sgt, C.A.F. - (18 Jan 1935 - 11 Jan 2018) - Jack Brill, UE, of Lower Sackville, died suddenly and unexpectedly in Halifax on January 11, 2018, one week shy of his 83rd birthday. A Westerner by birth but a proud Nova Scotian by choice, he was born to Margaret Barkworth and Cedric Brill in Winnipeg, Man., on January 18, 1935. He married Mary (Ihasz) Brill in Sydney, on September 3, 1960, and together they had three children: Margaret (Chris) Haché, Louis (Dr. Yvette Scattolon) and Carol Brill. His grandchildren, Charlotte, Chris, and Arianna provided him with much love, pride and joy. He cherished going to their concerts, recitals and sporting events. Through Jack's three careers, there was much of which to be proud. Joining the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) as a teenager, he served his country for 20 years in the Postal Corps, retiring as a Sergeant. Memorable postings included Germany, Cyprus, aboard the HMCS Protecteur and Alert; he always had plenty of captivating stories to tell. Jack then worked for Canada Post - he started as a letter carrier and rose up through the ranks becoming the last Postmaster at the Bedford Post Office before its closure. Later he retired as superintendent of the Halifax post office located on Bedford Row, one of Nova Scotia's busiest. During his postal career Jack was elected as President of APOC-NS, the Association of Postal Officials of Canada, for eight consecutive years. For his third career Jack entered politics and served six years as a municipal councillor for Sackville ending with the HRM amalgamation. He was extremely proud to represent the people of Sackville and truly enjoyed his time on County Council. Over the years Jack lent his leadership talent to numerous community endevours becoming known as a detailed researcher, loyal partner and fierce advocate. He was relentless and once he took on a challenge he simply did not quit. Often described as a 'Dog with a Bone' Jack's passion for community development spans 50 years. To share a few highlights...In the early 70's Jack was a driving force in starting the Sackville chapter of CAMR now known as the Canadian Association for Community Living (CACL). He was instrumental in the creation of Anchor Industries, now known as Building Futures. Building Futures continues to provide meaningful employment and life skills training to adults who have an intellectual challenge. He was, quite rightfully so, very proud of this accomplishment. He was the driving force behind First Lake Village for over 10 years, an effort to create a long-term care facility to serve the Seniors in Lower Sackville. Jack was passionate that the seniors of Sackville deserved a first-class opportunity to remain in the community they loved. After a diagnosis with Prostate Cancer at the age of 64, he became a tireless ambassador spreading the news about detecting the dreaded disease early and saving lives. When he was diagnosed there was little information available and even less support. He vowed to change that and became a key person in the creation of an information package called the Reef Knot Kit which then became a tool used by other cancer organizations across the country. Jack also teamed with a wonderful band of good men to create numerous support groups across Nova Scotia. Hundreds of men and women have gained comfort and valuable information through this ongoing effort. Jack had a dry sense of humour and loved silly puns, making loved ones groan and roll their eyes. He also devoted his energy to a genealogy project in his spare time. Jack discovered that he was a descendant of Christain Wehr, a United Empire Loyalist. The love of Jack's life was his wife of 57 years, Mary. They were loving partners, wonderful parents and amazing grandparents. His dog, Cedric, was a source of great pleasure and often found by his side. Along with his parents, Jack was predeceased by his brothers, Harold, Ron and Bob. He is survived by his sister, Linda Mitchell, Drayton Valley, Alta., his brothers-in-law, Vince Ihasz, Dartmouth, and Louis (Mary) Ihasz, Baddeck. He truly loved his many nieces and nephews and extended family around the world and took great joy in connecting with them in his travels. A memorial service for Jack will be held in Knox United Church, Lower Sackville, at 2 p.m. on January 20th, with a reception to follow in the church hall. WAKUNICK, Gerald, CPO1, RCN/C.A.F. - 80, of Dartmouth, passed away on September 5, 2011, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Welland, Ont., he was a son of the late Mary Ann and Adam Wakunick. Gerald served in the Navy from 1950 until 1987 as Chief Petty Officer First Class. Upon retirement, after serving for 37 loved years in the navy, he enjoyed many hobbies, including hunting, fishing and most of all, spending time at his beloved cottage. Gerald is survived by his wife, Joyce; son, Jerry (Karen); sisters, Sylvia and Evelyn; brother, Steve (Barb); grandchildren Crystal (Brian) and Candy (Rob); great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sister Vivian; brother Walter; grand-son John. (Glenn) Doty on August 1, 2015. HEINSMA, Stanley (1942-2018) - age 75, of Martha Street, Pictou, passed away January 26, 2018 in Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in Kubaard, Holland, he was a son of the late Sjoerd and Johanna (Tjalsma) Heinsma. An industrial electrician by trade, he was a long time employee of Michelin Tire, and was a man of many interests. He enjoyed working on projects like boats, planes, and broken equipment. He was also an avid amateur radio operator. CHUDYK, Albert Edward - died suddenly at home on May 12, 1986. Born in Gault, Ontario in 1920. He loved and was loved by his family. He leaves his wife, Eileen (Hustler); sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Margaret and grandson, Colin of Smithers, John adn Barbara and grandson, Tom of Victoria; daughter and son-in-law, Allison and Kim Douglas-Tourner of Victoria, his brother and sister-in-law, Henry and Blance Chudyk of Cambridge, Ontario; many nieces and nephews, his dear friends, Herbert and Sadie Watson of Victoria and many others relatives and good friends. Bert was in the RCN for 7 years during the second World War and served in both the North Atlantic and South Pacific as a Chief Petty Officer. He sold heavy equipment in Edmonton and the Peace River for several years before moving to Victoria in 1958 where he was active in the construction business until the time of his death. WELLS, Eric Lloyd, RCN / C.A.F. (12 Mar 1931 - 25 Jan 2018) - Dartmouth-It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Eric Lloyd Wells, age 86, on Thursday January 25, 2018 at Willow Hall in Dartmouth. Eric was born in Horwood, Notre Dame Bay, Newfoundland to the late Elias and Eleanor (Hickman) Wells. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1951 and retired in 1976. While in the service Eric studied for his second career as a commercial underwriter and worked at Commercial Union of Canada for an additional 15 years after leaving the service. Eric enjoyed photography and especially loved capturing the beauty of Shubie Park where he and his wife, Betty, walked for many years. He was an avid reader who enjoyed golfing, playing darts, building/fixing things with his hands and working outdoors. Eric loved to spread his joy of music through his accordion, which he learned to play as a boy in Newfoundland. Eric is survived by his wife Betty; children Marina (Douglas) Perrault and Donna; grandchildren Samuel, Timothy, Sarah, Matthew and Zachary; sisters Annie Hodder and Madge Penney and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers Wesley, Walter, Raymond and Jim; sisters Bessie Hodder and Florence Mercer. Arrangements are under care of Dartmouth Funeral Home. LOGAN, John Wellington (Deke, Jack), RCAF/ RNVR / LCdr, RCN - passed away on January 29th at his home in Berwick House in Victoria, B.C. with family at his bedside, and a smile on his face. John was born in Stanley, N.S. on Oct. 9, 1923 to Hugh and Elizabeth Logan, the second of six siblings. John was predeceased by his wife of 52 years Joan (Whalley), his brothers, Carson, Don and Hugh. He is survived by his sons, Ian of Edmonton and Hugh (Peggy) of Lakeside, P.E.I., his two grandsons, Daniel (Kelsey) and Sean of Edmonton, sisters Gertrude and Kay (Bill), and sisters-in-law Marthe and Peggy. John had a distinguished career in the Canadian Navy as a pilot, during his 26 years of service. He retired to the Annapolis Valley in N.S. in 1968 and later became a real estate broker until his second retirement in 1990. He and Joan moved to Victoria later in 1990 to join both relatives and naval colleagues. Soon after Joan passed in 2005, John moved in to Berwick House seniors' residence where he enjoyed his final years with many dear friends. DELUCA, Robert James, OMM, SSM, CD, Capt (N) (MARS), RCN / C.A.F.  - age 81, of Halifax. Born in Toronto, Ont., August 5, 1936, he passed away Saturday, January 27, 2018 in the Halifax Infirmary. Claus predeceased by his wife, Marion (Johnston). He will be greatly missed by his daughters, Catherine, of Vancouver, B.C. and grandchildren Maxim and Nicole; Cheryl (Steven) Masters of Halifax and grandson Alexander; and Diane, of Connecticut. Robert is survived by his sister-in-law, Joann Scott; sister, Marjorie Hind, of Toronto, Ont.; brother, George, of Burlington, Ont. He was predeceased by his parents, James and Marjorie Deluca; and brother, Frank, of Toronto, Ont. His Royal Canadian Naval career spanned from his enrollment as a Seaman Electrician in 1954 to his retirement as a Captain (N) in 2001. He was selected for commissioning and graduated from the venture Officer Training Plan in 1957. He navigated HMCS Quinte and Iroquois; and was the Operations Officer of HMCS Athabaskan and Inch Arran. After graduating as a specialist in Naval Operations, he was Operations Officer of HMCS Restigouche and the OIC of the Tactical Information Section of the Fleet School in Halifax. He was an Honours graduate of the CF Staff College. Robert was the Commanding Officer of the destroyers HMCS Mackenzie, Restigouche and Huron. He also served in NDHQ Ottawa and on the staff at NATO HQ , Brussels. He was appointed by the Governor-General as Officer of the Order of Military Merit in 1985. He held staff positions in Personnel and Plans at Maritime HQ, Halifax until his retirement from the Regular Force in 1991. He continued to serve as Convoy Commodore to the Admiral with Primary Naval Reserve until 2001 for which he received a Maritime Commander’s Commendation, completing 47 years of continuous service to the Queen and Canada. On retirement, he pursued his hobby of photography, and was a Past-President of the Photographic Guild of Nova Scotia. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place on Friday, February 2nd from 3-6 p.m. and Memorial Service will take place on Saturday, February 3rd at 10 a.m., both to take place in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax. Interment to take place in Fairview Lawn Cemetery Columbarium. ECCLES, John Alexander, Lt, RCNVR - Passed away at Grand River Hospital-Freeport Site on Tuesday, February 17, 2015 in his 99th year. Devoted and loving husband for 73 years of Florence (Adair) Eccles. Proud father of Bonnie Eccles of Toronto, Beverley Schofield (Lawrence) of Medicine Hat and Brenda Eccles-Jardine (Will) of Thamesford. His passion for the campus was evident both during and after his retirement. He was a stalwart member of the Norfolk St. United Church and served in many capacities in his over 60 years there. John was a charismatic fellow and a lover of all sports especially baseball, curling and golf. John's greatest forte and perhaps a key to his longevity was his interest in and interaction with people. A Celebration of his Life will be held at Cutten Fields 190 College Ave. E. Guelph on Thursday, February 26th, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. Cremation, then at a future date, inurnment at Memory Gardens. Devoted husband of the late Anne Noel Gemmell Leduc (1995) and the late Margaret Siman (1980). Cherished father of the late Carol Dale Marsh (1999) and Jenny (Raymond) Kennedy, Raymond (Sabine) Leduc, Laurence (the late Janet) Leduc and Chris Leduc. LAURIE, John Ross (07 Apr 1923 - 19 Apr 2015)  April 7, 1923 - April 19, 2015 Jack, to all who loved him, passed away peacefully in Claremont, CA after recently celebrating his 92nd birthday with cake, a little whiskey, friends and care-givers. Jack was a special man with a big heart - he would do anything to help a friend, and people gravitated to him. He was always a gentleman, appreciated kindness and treated others with respect. Jack was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and spent his childhood in Smithers, then Prince Rupert, B.C. He joined the Merchant Marines and later joined the Royal Canadian Navy during WW2. After the war Jack and his wife Bernice (nee Chipelski) moved to Vancouver and later to Boston Bar, and operated restaurants in both towns. But California beckoned them and a new adventure began. Bernice passed in 1987, and Jack settled into re-building his life. Doreen Keith later joined Jack's life and the two of them shared many adventures through the years. Jack loved to play golf, had many "holes in one", and he frequently shot his age when in his 70's. Jack was pre-deceased by his parents James and Grace, and brothers, Robert, Jim, and Ken (Jacqueline). Jack is survived by Doreen, his sister-in-law Elsie (Jim), nieces Barbara (Marvin), Shirley-Anne (Tony), nephews Jordan and Aaron, cousin Frank Whiteley, and the rest of the Erickson family of cousins. Jack also leaves behind all his cherished friends and neighbours at Mountain Village Apts. - too numerous to list- who made his life rich with friendships. A special thank-you to the VNA Hospice and his caregivers at 'At Open Arms' who truly made the last months of his life dignified, comfortable, and loved. We will miss you Jack. Love you. LAURIE, John Dougald (Jack), RCNVR (14 Oct 1920 - 11 Jan 2008) - Peacefully at Carpenter Hospice, Burlington after a long and dignified battle with lung cancer. Beloved husband of the late Marguerite Devona Wright Laurie. Loving father of J. Garth and partner Ruth. Cherished grandfather of Catherine Devon Carrington Laurie. He warmly welcomed Nicole and Katelyn into his life and family. Predeceased by brothers, Gordon and Stuart and sisters, Anne Bellingham and Betty Becker. Jack was a veteran of WWII, serving five years in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve on convoy duty in both the North Atlantic and Pacific theatres in ciphers and communications. He was committed to the preservation of naval traditions and remembrance of the significance of war through his long membership and executive duties in the Burl-Oak Naval Veterans. Eric served in the Second World War and Korea with the Royal Canadian Navy, retiring in 1966 after 25 years. He was a member of Camoson Lodge #14 AF & AM B.C.R., Britannia Lodge #7 AF & AM, B.C.R., Western Gate Preceptory #30 and the Victoria Shrine Club. HE was District Manager for the Daily Colonist and was past president of the Victoria Branch of the Canadian Diabetes Association and a member and past president of the Chief and P.O. Association. COURVILLE, Joseph Leopold (Leo) - passed away August 24, 1988 at the Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria, BC, born August 3, 1900 in Hull, Quebec. Predeceased by his wife, Florence, March 3, 1979, Leo leaves his only daughter, Marie and her husband, Wally Fletcher; three sons, Art, Paul and his wife, Neil of Victoria, John and his wife, Helen of Campbell River; also nieces and nephews in Eastern Canada; 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Leo was a retired Chief Petty Officer from the Royal Canadian Navy in 1945. Lifetime member of the Chief's and Petty Officer's Association and an employee with BC Packers for twenty-one years. CRAWFORD, Ronald Charles, CPO1, Master-at-Arms, RCN - aged 69, passed away at his home after a long illness, on June 24, 1989. Predeceased by his first wife, Hazel; and sons, Dennis; he is survived by his loving wife, Isabel; daughters, Jean Nelson, husband, Victor, Wendy Ralstrick and husband Tony; son, Ronald and his wife, Elaine, seven grandchildren; brothers, Bill, of Sicamous, BC, Dave of Kamloops and Mina Lister of Sorrento, BC. Ronald was born in Arran, Saskatchewan on December 7, 1909. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy in Jun 1938, and served on the high seas and the coast of France during the Second World War. Retired on February 26, 1967 with the rank of Chief Petty Officer 1st Class. He had been an active member and Director of the Royal Canadian Naval Benevolent Fund, since 1951, and was immediate Past president of the Chiefs and Petty Officers Association, and an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion #37. PIPE, Ernest A. (Mickey), Stoker, RCNVR (served 1940-1945) - Born 1917  Died 1996. A World War 2 veteran of the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve, Stoker Ernest Pipe served in HMCS Napanee and HMCS Lachute - one of his duties during action stations was the depth charge throwers.

Ernest "Mickey" Pipe enlisted in 1940 and married 20 year old Hilda on August 31, 1940 (ironically, the same day when the Napanee was launched from the Kingston shipyard). Off he went to the Battle of the North Atlantic, and Hilda, as a 'bomb girl', to the ammunition factories in Montreal, so critical to the war effort. He returned home in summer 1945 after V-E day.

Ernest died in May 1996, just shy of his 79th birthday. With full credit to the fine military people who run our armed forces, on the day after HMCS Kingston (700) was commissioned in Kingston (from the very same dock as the Napanee in 1940), her first official duty was to steam out into the waters of the mighty St. Lawrence River on that sunny but cold autumn morning of Monday September 22, 1996 at 09:30 hrs.  With his wife Hilda (1920-2009) and family aboard, the ship's engines were shut down, and with chaplain and bagpiper doing their duty, the ship's company at full attention and flag at half mast, his ashes were scattered into the cold, clear Canadian waters off Kingston - where he was born in 1917 - flowing eventually into the North Atlantic, the location of his stories to his sons of life on a bobbing corvette on escort duty in the middle of this cold ocean, doing the 'Murmansk run', fighting the memorable battle of Christmas 1942 (ON 154) where they lost so many ships and men (although sinking a U boat in return) had a lasting effect.

HARPER, Doris Catherine, WRCNS -  Peacefully in her 97th year on Saturday January 27, 2018 at the Perley Rideau Veterans Health Centre. Doris was the beloved wife of the late John (Jack) and the treasured mother of Judith, David (Anna), John (the late Nancy) and Deanna Mahood (Paul). Their Nanny's memory will also be cherished by her grandchildren, Alex Campbell (Jackie), Cheryl Campbell (Derek), Nick Harper (Ivania), Dan Harper, Jeff Mahood (Andrea), Greg Mahood (Leigh), Jennifer Charles (Matt), her great-grandchildren Adrienne, Josh, Emily, KaiLin, Desmond, Nate, Peter, Molly, Connor and Abigail. Predeceased by her parents Trevor and Gertrude Cale of Lethbridge, AB. Also predeceased by her brothers Art, Lloyd and Glynn, and her sister Olive. Doris will also be remembered with love by many nieces and nephews. Born at Trostrey, near Usk, Monmouthshire, Wales, Doris grew up in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, joined the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service (WRCNS) in 1942 and served in Galt, Toronto, Halifax, St. John's and Sydney. She married Jack in Halifax on board HMCS Warrior in 1946 and happily moved with him as the navy decided for the next 22 years, raising their children in Victoria, Sorel, Dartmouth and Ottawa. She worked in the Registrar's Office of Carleton University from 1970 to 1985, and travelled extensively with Jack in retirement until his death in 2002. In recent years, she lived in Park Place, Richmond Road and Redwoods Retirement Residence, Draper Avenue in Ottawa. Family will receive relatives and friends in the Hall of Colours, Beechwood National Cemetery, 280 Beechwood Ave. (east of Vanier Parkway) on Monday February 5, 2018 from 10 a.m. Funeral service in the Sacred Space at 11 a.m. Interment in the National Military Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions to the Perley and Rideau Veteran's Health Centre Foundation, 1750 Russell Road, Ottawa, ON, K1G 5Z6, would be gratefully appreciated. BROWN, Joseph William, LS.EM, RCN - of Summerland, BC passed away peacefully January 21, 2018 at the age of 88 years. He will be remembered and sadly missed by his wife of 67 years, Olga 'Charley'; children Susan of Parksville, BC, Janet (Felix) of Calgary, AB, Robert (Rose) of Richmond, BC and David (Nena) of Coquitlam, BC; grandchildren Shane, Chris, Amanda, Shaun, Alex, Meagan, Derek, Lindsey, and Maya; great grandchildren Mackenzie, Harrison, and Harper; and siblings Agnes (Richard) of Langley, BC and Doreen (Gordon) of Sherwood Park, AB. He was predeceased by sister Joan Potter. Joe's accomplishments and skills were many. He will be fondly remembered by his many friends that he made during his time in the RCN, as a member of the Vintage Car Club, building his live steam locomotive, his career in DND, and during retirement participating in and teaching round dancing. CAVERS, Gerald Arthur (04 Jan 1926 - 22 Jan 2018) - It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our Husband, Father, Grandfather and Friend. He passed away peacefully at home. He was predeceased by his Parents, infant Son, Grandson, three brothers and two sisters. Jerie is survived by Lila, his wife of 68 years, sons Duncan, Bruce (Deann), Jack (Patti) and grandsons Shawn, Casey and Jake and sister Donna KITSON of Victoria. Jerie grew up in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. After serving in the R.C.N. he worked in Pine Falls, Manitoba before moving to Crofton (B.C.P.F). Jerie loved family, friends, all sports and Manitoba. ALLATT, Robert Gordon (30 Oct 1924 - 29 Jan 2018) - Passed away peacefully on January 29, 2018 at Lisaard House. Devoted husband of Jean Isabel (nee Preston) for 69 years, loving father to Linda (Greg) Elkins of London, George (Charlene) of Smithville and Barbara (Andrew) Buntin of Cobourg, proud grandfather to seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and dear brother to Dave. Bob will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his extended family and friends. Bob served in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War. Bob was an active Church and Probus member and an involved member of the Heritage Meadows Community. We are grateful for Dad's 93 years as a loving family man. BUCKBORO, Kelvie Andrew - of Calgary, AB, born in Winnipeg on May 30, 1924, sadly passed away after various health battles on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at the age of 93. Kel was a Navy veteran with many tales to tell and he worked as a geophysicist for the remainder of his career. Kel and his wife Christie had four children who were raised in northwest Calgary. They retired to Summerland and then to Penticton where he enjoyed golfing and going out on the boat fishing. Kel was also a Canadian champion swimmer who coached many young swimmers. He was always admired for his beautiful yard and took great passion in his home football team, the Calgary Stampeders. He was affectionately named Grumps by his first grandchild, due to his red-headed temper, and it stuck! He loved and enjoyed every moment with all his grandchildren, whether it was playing crib, tobogganing, fishing, telling stories, or teasing. He was often told that he was the one who was responsible for the big family, to which he would say "I'm sorry" in his humorous way. Kel will always be remembered by his children Sandi (John) Magnusson, Dallas (Ken) Loschuk, Deane Buckboro, Sallee (Boyd) Williams; grandchildren Kristie (Eric) Magnusson, Shauna (Mike) Weckl, Becky (Paul) Johnston, Bret (Fabby) Loschuk, Kelsey (Sam) Williams, Riley (Charmaine) Williams, Vikki Buckboro, Megan Buckboro, Brandon Buckboro, and his great-grandchildren Tamsyn, Bryony, Aidan, Lilly, Vailynn, Cohen, Dean, Reese, Ryder, and Lennon. GALBRAITH-McTAVISH, Ian Alexander, ABBN, RCN (15 Jun 1991 - 27 Jan 2018) - It is with great sadness that the family of Able Seaman Ian Galbraith-McTavish announce his passing on January 27, 2018 in Victoria, B.C. Ian enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces in 2013 as an Artillery Soldier and transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy as a Boatswain in 2017. He previously served at CFB Gagetown prior to CFB Esquimalt. A dedicated Boatswain who loved mountain climbing and being outdoors, Ian could always be counted on to help out his shipmates with kindness and understanding. Ian will be lovingly remembered by his parents Heather Galbraith and her husband Chuck Uhl; by his father William McTavish; his siblings Chris and his wife Reese; John, Brian, and Billie McTavish; step-brothers Jacob and Jason Uhl; his nephews Colby and Rylan; his nieces Layla and Charlie, as well as family and friends across Canada. GELLATLY, Colin Clark -  born Sept. 17, 1923, passed away peacefully Jan. 20, 2018 in Langley. He is survived by his daughter Anitra (Brian); son David (Jackie); grandchildren Shawn, Tyler, Colin and Jennifer. He was predeceased by wife Gwen in 2006. Colin served in the Royal Canadian Navy overseas between 1942 and 1946. GONZALES, Raymond Julian - Raymond Julian Gonzales, born December 30, 1941, passed away peacefully January 26, 2018 at his home in Chilliwack, BC. He is survived by his loving wife Pamela of 50 years; sister Rita (Sandy) Cline of Ontario; nephew Brian (Sharon) Cline of Florida; niece Michelle (Thomas) Wallace of Ontario; sister- in-law Muriel Emsley of England. Ray had many cousins, Linda (John) Stewart of Nanaimo, Ron (Kathy) Read of Agassiz, Carol (Gary) Marquette of Kelowna; as well as dear friends Beverley (David) Nadin of Chilliwack and Dale Wanek of North Vancouver. Ray was predeceased by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Britania Rodriques of Vancouver, BC. Ray grew up in Niagara Falls and went to school there. He worked in an Iron Foundry there and then joined the Royal Canadian Navy in Nova Scotia until 1967. He then became an employee of BC Forest Products as a logger in Franklin River, Port Alberni and Pitt River. Ray also worked as a roofer at which time he suffered a serious accident and thus retired in 1983. Ray was also a member of the Army and Navy Club in North Vancouver. Ray and Pam met in North Vancouver and they were married in 1968. It was love at first sight and they had many wonderful years together living in North Vancouver. In 2001 they decided to move to Chilliwack and had many happy times there as well. Ray was a very knowledgeable man and loved to read about many subjects. He also loved to cook. He was an exceptional cook and provided Pam with some excellent dishes. Ray also loved to talk with people on many a good subject right up to the end. He will be sadly missed by all. We would like to thank Dr. David Fitzpatrick and Fran for their kind attention, and also the BC Paramedics, CGH, and his caregivers from Fraser Valley Health for their kindness to Ray in his latter years. GORMAN, Francis Ronald  - It is with great sadness the family of Francis (Frank) Ronald Gorman (Halifax) announce his passing on February 1st 2018, surrounded by his family. Frank was born at home in Halifax on Pepperell Street, April 19th, 1923 to William and Hazel (Hodges) Gorman. His family moved to Merigomish when he was 10 years where he enjoyed hunting and fishing his brother, John. When he was 17 he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy at the start of World War 2 and served for the duration of the war as a Naval gunner. During the war he met and later married the love of his life, Mary (Whalen) Gorman. After the war, he joined the Halifax Police Department where he served in the police force for 37 ½ years and welcomed his 3 daughters (Anne, Frances, and Geraldine) into the world. Frank was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Knights of Columbus, Cape Breton Club, Retired Police Association of Nova Scotia. Frank enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, going for drives to Cape Breton, having fun at the Casino and horse races, singing songs, reciting poetry, and sharing good times and his humour with friends and family. Frank is predeceased by his parents William and Hazel (Hodges) Gorman, brother John Gorman, sister Mary (Gorman) Doucette ,beautiful wife, Mary (Whalen) Gorman, and daughter, Gerri Gorman. Frank is survived by his daughters, Fran Gorman and Anne (Gorman) Watson, nephews and nieces Sandy (Sonia), Rhys, Teaghan, Arianna, David (Christa), Brandon, Gerri, Jessica, Brad (Kelli), Warren (Stephanie), Ethan, Ben, Lee (Lee), Tara (Trevor), Ella and Alex. ROSE, William G., C1RP, 12760-H, RCN / Lt, RCN - Bill passed away peacefully in hospital. Bill was born in Tweed, Ontario. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy at the age of 17 where he served for 38 years. He attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer first class and later took his commission retiring as Lt(N). While serving in the Navy Bill enjoyed visiting many foreign countries and had many entertaining stories to tell about his adventures. After Bill's Navy years he went on to work as a commissionaire for several years. Bill was happiest socializing with family and friends and especially enjoyed his weekly visits to the Chiefs and Petty officers Assn. Bill was a long time member of over 40 years, of the Royal Canadian Legion. He Loved hockey and curling and had an eclectic love for music and enjoyed a good tune. Bill was known for his unique way with words which always seemed to make you laugh. Predeceased by his father Malcom Roger Rose, mother Shirley Ellen Rose (Rainbird) and wife Bernice. Bill leaves behind his sister Judith and children Amber, Roger, Shelley, and step children Dean, Randy, Kevin, Joanne and many grandchildren. The family would like to thank the staff at Victoria General Hospital (6th floor North) for all the kindness shown to Bill in his final days. There will be no service at Bills request. WASHBURN, Robert Neil, Lt, RCNVR (06 Jun 1922 - 29 Jan 2018) - With profound gratitude for his peaceful passing after a long and fulfilling life, enormously well-lived, our family bids a sad but fond farewell to Bob, proud and loving husband of Marion, his cherished "bride" of 72 plus years. Bob was the son of the late Frederick and Elsie Washburn, brother of the late Frances Shaw, all of Hamilton, dear father of Pat (and her husband, the late Bob Reid), Peter (and partner Glady), John (and partner John), proud Papa of Kim, Michael (Vera), Scott (Kerrie), Jenny (Blake), Jill (Noel) and Neil, beloved Great-Papa of Owen, Nate, Jack, Elli, Gwyn, Evan and Lauren – all great joys in his life and now the entrusted caretakers of his honourable legacy. For his extended family of "in-laws and outlaws," Bob and his playful sense of humour will long be remembered with great affection. Born in Chippewa, Bob grew up in Hamilton, a Delta lad, a McMaster University graduate and an ever-loyal Hamilton Tiger-Cats fan. Bob served in World War II as a Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Navy. Upon discharge after the war, he began what was to be a very accomplished business career at Bell Canada, retiring as Vice President in 1983. Bob and Marion have been members at Mississaugua Golf and Country Club for 48 years. Both were ardent curlers and golfers. Summers were spent with the family at Jack Lake where Bob loved to feed the birds, sweep down the spiders, observe the action from the deck or his favourite chair and at night, play cards. For 34 years, winters were enjoyed at Palm Aire in Sarasota, Florida. Bob and Marion truly valued their rich and enduring network of great friends and the best of times shared with them from Hamilton, to Toronto, to Sudbury, to Montreal, to Toronto, to Sarasota and finally to Oakville. "Enjoy your flight," dear man. The family extends its sincerest thanks to Dr. Robert Gabriel and the nurses at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital for their compassionate care. YOUNG, James Christopher Frederick, RCNR - Dr. Christopher Young of Guelph passed away peacefully on January 29, 2018. Born April 1, 1940 in Charlottetown, PEI, he was the son of the late Merrill and Irene (nee Corkum). He is survived by his loving wife Margaret. Favourite brother of sister Gretchen (Bill) Warren, Gravenhurst. From his first marriage, Chris was the proud father of Scott (Michelle), Edmonton, Rebecca (Jay Charette and his daughter Emily-Anne), Ottawa, and Stacey Andrea, Ottawa. Loving grandfather of Benjamin Young. Fond stepfather of Joy (Steven) Prime, Saskatoon. Dearly loved Gramps of Stephanie and Michael Prime. Fond step-grandfather of Jasmine (Klaus) Lachnitt, Kim Swain. Loved great-grandfather of Nicole, Jenna and Katelyn Shank, Kaden and Violet Lachnitt. Chris grew up in Sackville, NB, where he attended Mount Allison University and studied chemistry (1960). He simultaneously earned an officers commission in the Royal Canadian Navy Reserve. He then moved on to Hamilton to attain a M.Sc. in organic chemistry at McMaster University (1962). Next, Chris tried his hand at teaching chemistry; first for two years at Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate and Vocational School and then for two years at Wilfred Laurier University in Waterloo. He continued his formal education with a PhD in chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1971). Post doctoral studies followed at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry Syracuse (1972) and Mass Spectrometry Research Unit, University College of Swansea, Wales UK (1992). In 1972, he joined the Research Branch of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada at the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa. Much of his research was devoted to providing analytical support to his colleagues' studies. While in Ottawa he worked on methods for removing mycotoxins (toxic chemicals produced by fungi) from contaminated wheat and corn. After 25 years in Ottawa, Chris was transferred to Guelph to help establish the Guelph Food Research Centre. In Guelph, he helped colleagues identify beneficial compounds in fruits and vegetables. See, mom was right when she said "eat your fruits and vegetables because they are good for you". After 39 years of having fun at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, he hung up his test tubes. Chris was an active member of the West Ottawa Rotary Club. He faithfully served as a committed member of Sackville United Church, NB, Westboro United Church, Ottawa and Dublin Street United Church, Guelph. However, his greatest activities were devoted to the study of the history of the families who left Germany, France, and Switzerland 1750-1752 and settled in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. He chaired the organizing committee of the Grand Family Reunion of 2003, which celebrated Lunenburg's 250th anniversary. He also wrote five books on Lunenburg family history and his personal memoirs. One of the challenges of his later life was dealing with Parkinson's disease, diagnosed at age 62. He chose to respond to the philosophy Parkinson's lives with me, I do not live with Parkinson's. Chris's remains have been cremated and will later be placed in the waters near Lunenburg. A memorial service and reception to celebrate Chris' life will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2018, 10:30 a.m. at Dublin Street United Church, 68 Suffolk St West, Guelph, N1H 2J2. Arrangements entrusted to the Wall-Custance Funeral Home & Chapel. Margaret is most grateful for the support of the Guelph Wellington Alzheimer Society and to Wellington Terrace Long Term Care Home, Fergus, Ontario for their marvelous care of Chris. Survived by a sister Patricia Carey, Toronto, father of Diane, Kirby and husband Norm, Victoria, BC, Dave Carey and wife Margaret, Dale Carey and husband Rob, Doug Carey all of Toronto; fondly remembered by his four grandchildren, Shauna, Leanne, Samantha and Michael; beloved friend and companion, Alberta Baldwin of Kingston. CRAIG, John William, P1BN, RCN - Born October 9, 1919. Passed away May 18, 1990 in the Comox Hospital. John served in the Royal Canadian Navy for some 27 years with retirement in 1969. CALDERBANK, Kenneth Robinson (Ken), RCNVR / C2ER, CD, RCN (01 Nov 1921 - 24 Jun 1990) - WW2 and Cold War Veteran.

Ken grew up in Saskatoon where he volunteered in 1942 for the RCNVR and then as a regular, after a brief period on civvy street when demobilized at the end of WWII. During the Second World War he served on various Bangor class minesweepers on both coasts, and the River class frigate HMCS Poundmaker. Ken made Stoker Petty Officer in 1944.

Shortly after VE Day he was married in Victoria to another Saskatoon native who had migrated to Victoria. Later they had two sons, and the family traveled extensively while they joined Ken on his overseas postings. On re-enlistment he entered as a Leading Stoker and was based in Esquimalt. He served on the cruisers HMCS Uganda and Ontario and the frigate HMCS Antigonish. On the Ontario he was made up to Petty Officer and had a memorable winter cruise into the Caribbean, where he celebrated the birth of his first son in Panama. While on Antigonish his second son was born.

Ken volunteered for the submarine service in 1954 and was posted to England for training. His time in submarines was greatly cherished and his family made many lifelong friends who served in these boats. While based in Gosport, Ken served on HMS/M Alliance, Amphion and Truncheon. Ken was involved in the commissioning of Truncheon from 1956, where he was promoted to CPO in 1957, and served on her until mid-1959.

When posted to Halifax in 1959, Ken spent a short time onboard HMS/M Ambush, and then was ashore on the Flag Officer S/M staff at Ambrose. Reassignment to submarines in England came in late 1960 with service on HMS/M Taciturn, which was eventually transferred to Australia. On arrival in Australia he was transferred to HMS/M Tabard on which he served until late 1964.

Ken returned to General Service and Esquimalt at the start of 1965 having crossed both the Equator and the Arctic Circle while serving in submarines. He was the CPO in charge of the Shore Patrol until mid 1968. He received his Honorable Discharge in early 1969.

He retired in early 1969 in Sidney BC, then to Australia in 1972, and back to Esquimalt in 1990.

COULTIS, James (Jim), PO.BN - passed away suddenly at Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria, BC, on Sunday, December 2, 1990, born August 12, 1920. Dad of Julie Ann who predeceased him, beloved husband of Ruth, dad of Jim, Jan, John and grandfather to Tyler, Derrick, Many and Darcy. He served as CPO with the Canadian Navy during the Second World War. His life was spent working in the oil industry where he entered into many endeavours, primarily as Coultis Drilling Ltd., Calgary, Alberta. He was a member of the Calgary and Victoria Faceters Guilds. Thanks to Dr. Morgan, nurses and staff of the Royal Jubilee Hospital. Special thanks to Dr. George and Diane Rasmussen. TANNER, Charles Edward - Peacefully, Charles Tanner passed away on January 31, 2018 at the age of 95. Charles was predeceased by his wife Winnifred H. Tanner in October of 1991. He is survived by his son Philip Charles and was a parishioner of St. Andrew's Anglican Church and served on the vestry and maintenance committee for many years. "Charlie" to his friends, was born on September 23, 1922 and grew up in St. Andrews, Manitoba. He attended St. Andrew's School and St. Andrew's Anglican Church on the Red. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1943 and served on the minesweeper HMCS Mulgrave as an upper deck stoker. He was part of the D-Day invasion, sweeping the English Channel of mines before the landings. After his navy service, Charlie enrolled in a diesel mechanics and welding course and was hired by the Province of Manitoba Highways Department as an apprentice. He worked for the Highways Department as a mechanic on snowplows and graders, rising to Garage Foreman and finally Mechanical Supervisor before retiring in 1988 after 42 years of service. He was greatly respected and by all his co-workers. In the early 1950s, Charlie and his wife started to build a family cottage in the Whiteshell Provincial Park. Using his carpentry and scrounging skills a waterfront lot was cleared and a small cottage was constructed. Over the years the cottage was expanded with indoor plumbing, a boathouse, a woodshed and a storage building. Charlie and the family spent many enjoyable summers at "the lake" swimming, boating and fishing. Always a traveler, Charlie enjoyed the outdoors and exploring the world. During his working years, with the family, many trips were taken across Canada and the U.S. with a camper trailer. After retirement he explored the world with trips to Australia and Europe. Charlie kept in touch with the Tanner family relatives by flying across the pond to England, Scotland and Wales. Charlie enjoyed curling, participating in many local bonspiels and afternoons at the local curling club with friends. He was an avid sports fan. There were trips every summer to catch MLB games for his favourite teams. He was proud to be a 25-year season ticket holder with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He travelled to many CFL Grey Cup games, no matter what teams were playing, to cheer and revel in the festivities. For the last 20 years he made a trip each year to see the Green Bay Packers, meeting many fans and players. Charlie spent a lot of time enjoying one of his hobbies: woodworking. Always looking to build something useful and decorative out of wood, be it a table, cabinet or chairs. He was very proud of the wood saw that he built, allowing logs to be cut into lumber. Many afternoons were spent with friends sawing lumber to be used for that special woodworking project. Charlie caught on to snowmobiling after retiring and rode many kilometers each winter. He was introduced to West Yellowstone, Montana in 1995 and was able to make the destination an annual trip. Always fresh snow, groomed trails and next door to Yellowstone National Park and Old Faithful. Charlie was a senior member of Scouts Canada for over 50 years. Either as a youth leader, committee member, trainer or resource person, he supported and taught the Scouting brotherhood to so many youth. He was able to attend many Provincial, National and World Scout Jamborees. He championed the development of the George Lake Scout Camp in Eastern Manitoba as a wilderness camp. He spent many winters hauling in building material by snowmobile and summers adding to the original homestead cabin. He was one of the key members of the "Over-the-Hill-Gang". He was instrumental in organizing the Trail's End Popcorn warehouse for the annual provincial fundraiser. And he was always available to assist in the Scout Trees planting weekend. In October 2010, he was inducted into the World Scout Foundation in Ottawa. Charlie's motto was "always be twice as busy in your retirement as when you were working". He lived up to this and more! He was always willing to help when needed, be it with a kind word or an extra hand, and will be sadly missed. A celebration of Charlie's life will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 9, 2018 at St. Andrew's Anglican Church, 2700 Portage Avenue. CHUBAK, Edward P., C2RM, RCN / C.A.F. - with deepest sorrow we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather on Monday, June 24, 19991 at the Royal Jubilee Hospital. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Vi; daughter, Kim; son-in-law, Bruce Beaudry and granddaughters, Erin and Kristie, of Vancouver; his son, Kevin, of Victoria and a brother, Bob of Sweden. He was predeceased by his father, Andrew; mother, Sophia and brother, Jerry; also left to mourn are his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dan and Jan Koliesavich, of Winnipeg and four nephews and their families, faithful walking companion, Ed Stark and Joe Shyth and many dear friends. Edd was born in Regina, Saskatchewan on March 9, 1936. He joined the RCN in 1955 serving 25 years, retiring with a rank of Chief Petty Officer and eight years with HMC Dockyard as an electronic technician, retiring from there in 1988 due to ill health. Edd's greatest love was his family. He was a kind and loving husband and father and a cheerful friend. Edds' interests were varied. he enjoyed hamming (VE&DGs is now silent), gourmet cooking, baking with his granddaughters and had recently been bitten by the woodworking bug. Edd was a member of V.A.R.R.A., C.A.R.F., The Esquimalt Legion and Retired Chief's & PO's Association. At Edd's request here will be no funeral service. His ashes will be scattered at sea. CALDWELL, Richard John, RCN - In Victoria, BC, on September 7, 1991, born in Dover, England on August 10, 1908. Survived by his wife, Helen; three daughters Kathleen and husband Robert Whitfield of Marithon, New Jersey, Helen and Husband Wilf McInerney of Victoria, and Patricia and husband Wayne Harbord of Victoria; son Father Richard Caldwell; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and a sister Isobel Caldwell of Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was a life member of the Chief Petty Officers Association and very active in the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He also served overseas in the Second World War with the RCN which he served with for 25 years. Mass will be celebrated at St. Andrew's Cathedral, on Wednesday, September 11, 1991 at 12:10 p.m. with the Rev. Father Richard Caldwell celebrant. Interment at Hatley Memorial Gardens. CLEMENTS, Alfred James - passed away at Royal Jubilee Hospital on April 20, 1992 at age 89, his family by his side. He is survived by Florence, his loving wife of 62 years, sons, Jim (Sheila) and Gordon (Pauline); daughters, Donalda (Alistair) and Leoline (Sandy); 9 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and his sister, Irene (Duncan) of Sudbury, Ontario. CONNOLLY, James Francis (Jim), M.I.D., P1CD, RCN - after a long, courageous battle, passed away peacefully on October 18, 1982. Born in Vancouver on February 26, 1924, he leaves behind , his loving wife, Shirley; children, Camille (Roy), Cynthia, Chris, Sandy (Randy), Terry, Jacquie (Tom); 11 grandchildren; his mother, Ann and brother, Terry and also his niece and nephew. Jim will be sadly missed by his family and friends. He served for 23 years in the RCN and was a veteran of the Second World War and mentioned in Despatches. he spent 21 of those years as a deep sea diver. A memorial service will he held at the Memorial Pavilion Chapel, Richmond at Bay Streets, on Wednesday, October 21 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev Edwin Taylor officiating. Cremation. COZENS, Ernest William, CERA, RCN - passed away peacefully at Royal Jubilee Hospital, Jun 28, 1993, at the age of 77 years. Sadly missed by his loving wife, Connie. Survived by his daughter, Leona (Dave) from Logan Lake; son, William (Jean) from Victoria; sister, Margaret Strong from Red Deer, Alberta; four granddaughters, Tracie, Connie, Karmen and Candice. CLARK, Charles Joseph (Jerry), Master-at-Arms, RCN - In the Gorge Road Hospital on November 15, 1993, at the age of 83 years. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on May 17, 1910. Survived by his loving wife, Mary Wenonah; nephew, Brian Morton and wife, Sandi, of New Westminster. Mr. Clark served on the high seas during the Second World War, and in peacetime he was employed by the Department of Foreign Affairs. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Pro Patria Branch No. 31, The Chiefs and Petty Officers' Association and the Knights of Columbus Council 1256. He will be deeply missed by his family and many friends. Service will be held in the Sands Funeral Chapel 317 Goldstream Avenue, Colwood, BC, on Friday, November 19, at 3:00 p.m. with Father Dan McCarthy officiating followed by interment in Hartley Memorial Gardens. CARTER, Robert D., CPO, RCN - late of Chilliwack, formerly of Haney, died peacefully after a lengthy illness on October 25, 1993, at the Chilliwack General Hospital in his 76th year. Bob will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 31 years, Agnes, brother, Ronald Carter, Victoria; sister, Doreen Clark, Coquitlam, also many nieces and nephews. COLE, Robert Alan, CPO, RCN - suddenly, October 8, 1993, in Rend, Nevada. Born October 24, 1921 in Vancouver, BC. Served in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1939 - 1961, then worked for the Attorney-General's Dept. until retirement. A member of the Royal Standard Lodge No. 398, Gizah Shrine Temple, and Chief P.O.'s Association, the Royal Canadian Legion, Armed Forces Pensioners Association of Canada. Remembered with love by wife, Donna; daughter, Kalee; sisters, Grace (Dick) McElvoy, Thelma (Henry) Kabalo and nieces and nephews. No service by request. Cremation. COVERDALE, Frances Hill (Frank), P1HT, RCN - born January 13, 1923 in Victoria. Passed away June 18, 1994 at Cowichan District Hospital. Predeceased by his lvoing parents, Alice and John Coverdale. Survived by his wife, Esther, children, Lynne, Robin, Deidre, Dale, Leola, Joe, Patti and Mary. As well there are 32 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and brothers Leonard and Kenneth (Shirley). STORRIE, John Herbert (Jack), PO Writer - Son of the late Mr & Mrs R.G. Storrie of Victoria, BC, Jack passed away peacefully at Mount St. Mary Hospital on April 11, 2007 in his 88th year. He was predeceased by his wife, Myrtle, in 2003 and is survived by his cousins Enid Graham (Surrey, B.C.) and Kathleen Storrie (Saskatoon, SK). After serving with the Royal Canadian Navy in WW II Jack worked for the Government of B.C. until his retirement. He was a longtime member of Gorge Vale Golf Club and the Church of St. John the Divine. He was always most appreciative of the care and companionship he received at home over many years from the staff of South Victoria Home Care and latterly at Mount St. Mary Hospital.
