WRIGHT, Keith
Francis, Slt, RCNVR, MPK - 13 Sep 1942, HMCS OTTAWA - Born 08
Mar 1920, son of Athol C. Wright, and of Olive E. Wright, of Ottawa,
Ontario.
Sub-Lieutenant Keith F. Wright, Ottawa naval
engineer, sailing on the Royal Canadian Navy destroyer that bore the
name of his home city, lost his life in the sinking of the
"Ottawa" along with three ratings from the district. A
list of the casualties issued by Naval Service Headquarters here
contained these Ottawa and district names missing and believed
killed: Sub-Lieutenant Keith Francis Wright, R.C.N.V.R, 22, naval
engineer, son of Mrs. Athol C. Wright of 85 Grove Avenue. Sub-Lieut.
Keith Wright, a native of Ottawa, attended Glebe Collegiate
Institute, graduating from the Jasper, Alberta high school where he
resided with his family while his father, the late A. C. Wright was
superintendent of Jasper National Park for five years. He had
written his third-year examinations at McGill University when he
enlisted with the R.C.N.V.R. as naval engineer on March 5, 1941, as
a naval engineer, just 2 months after his father passes away. He
passes his training courses at Kings College, Halifax and is
designated as a probationary Sub-Lt., RCNVR in December 1941. He
sails on HMS Mauritius to Singapore and South Africa before being
assigned to HMCS Ottawa (H60) in 1942. On September 9, 1942, HMCS
Ottawa is assigned to westbound convoy 127, departing Liverpool for
Halifax and onwards to New York. Protecting 32 merchant ships are
both Canadian destroyers Ottawa and St. Croix as well as 3 RCN
Corvettes and another British. On September 14, 1942, 500 nautical
miles east of St. John's, two torpedoes fired by U-91 slammed into
HMCS Ottawa at 02:05 hrs. A third torpedo fired 10 minutes later
finishes off the Ottawa. Of the 181 men aboard, 114 are killed and
67 survive and picked by other ships, after spending up to 5 hours
in the frigid waters of the North Atlantic. One of those killed in
action on HMCS Ottawa that night is Sub Lt. Keith Wright, last seen
by the ship's captain in the ward room when the destroyer was first
attacked. Convoy ON127 lost 8 ships, another 7 were damaged,
proceeding on to port. The family were advised 4 days later of his
being lost at sea, a month later confirming that he was now killed
in action. His body was never recovered. Sub Lt. Keith Francis
Wright, 22 years young, is remembered at Glebe Collegiate and at
McGill University. In June 1943, at St. Matthew's Church in a
service presided by the Bishop of Ottawa, a brass memorial
processional cross was dedicated in the memory of chorister Francis
Wright and donated to the church by his mother. The mother of 3
servicemen, a RCMP Constable and husband to a World War 1 veteran,
Mrs. Wright stated in the Ottawa Journal, "My feeling of pride
in his service and sacrifice over-shadows my sorrow. I am so proud
of my boy because he has not lost his life but has given it, and in
giving it, he has saved others." Sub Lt. Keith Francis Wright,
HMCS Ottawa, is remembered at Halifax's Naval War Memorial. His name
is engraved alongside 2,000 other Canadian Navy veterans who lost
their lives at sea. As well, on his World War 1 Army Father's Ottawa
headstone, Keith is remembered as well. (Researched by Kevan Pipe)

EDDY, Roy Ernest
- December 20, 1924 – March 3, 2018 Roy Ernest Eddy passed away
peacefully in his sleep on March 3, 2018 at Sunnybrook Veterans Home
from complications of influenza. Married to Dorothea Blanche Eddy
(nee McCoy) since September 1, 1947 and predeceased by brothers
Gordon and Alfred and sister Jane. He was saddened by the loss of
their third child Kathryn on August 1, 2017. Loving father to
Allison Eddy (Patrick Gorry), Warren Eddy (Kathy Guthro), Kathy
Dietrich (Wayne Scherger), Joanne Eddy (Michael Coulton) and Paul
Eddy (Marcela Leiva Olivares). Grandfather to Jamie, Elizabeth,
Rebecca, Sean, David, Paul, Megan, Amanda, Graham and Benjamin.
Great-Grandfather to Dexter and Amelia, plus one on the way! Roy was
born in Sault Ste. Marie (the "Soo"), Ontario. His parents
owned a general store, initially in an Ojibway speaking community of
Garden River, but they moved when he was a toddler to ensure the
kids also learned to speak English. He attended school in the Soo
where he participated in many sports. Roy's final high school year
was spent at St. Andrew's College in Aurora, an experience he
cherished forever. Major Roy E. Eddy, CD was a proud Canadian and a
Second World War Veteran. Roy joined the Royal Canadian Naval
Volunteer Reserve one year before his eligibility. He served on HMCS
Outremont, HMCS Stormont and the Aircraft Carrier HMS Puncher. He
participated in the Battle of the Atlantic, D-Day and, later,
Russian escort ship duties. After the war, Roy spent 42 years with
Abitibi-Consolidated, first in the Soo and relocating to Mississauga
in 1966. He later served in the Royal Canadian Army Pay Corps for 25
years, departing the reserves at the rank of Major. In his
retirement, he was passionate about speaking to students about WWII.
Over the years, Roy would travel back to Holland and France many
times to participate in Remembrance Day Celebrations, with his last
trip being to Juno Beach in 2014 to mark the 70th Anniversary of the
Canadian D-Day Landings. He was blessed with a great sense of
humour, humility and strong family values. Back in the day, it is
said that he danced the jitter bug like no other. Roy will certainly
be missed. The family wishes to extend a warm thank you to the
staff, private personal support workers and facilities at Sunnybrook
Veterans Home where Roy's creative side was explored through arts,
ceramics, jewelry, music and photography. Memorial and burial
services are being planned in his beloved Soo in the summer.

PARKER, William
(06 Dec 1925 - 04 Mar 2018) - Calgary, AB. It is with sadness that
the family announces the passing of Bill Parker. Bill is fondly
remembered for his kind and gentle ways. He was affable and
unassuming, warmly socializing with others in activities that ranged
from family gatherings to time spent on the golf course. He enjoyed
a good joke, stories and Rusty Nails. Bill was a native Calgarian,
the second of three children. He lived here his entire life, save
for a year spent in Scotland as a child. Upon his graduation from
high school, he served with the Canadian Navy. When he returned to
Calgary, Bill married Dora Gies and they raised a family of three
children. The family has many happy memories of summers spent
camping at Shuswap and Wasa Lakes. Bill was a strong provider for
his young family and he worked as a draftsman at Amerada Oil and Gas
then later as a landman with Pan Ocean and Marathon Oil and Gas.
Golf was an important part of Bill's life and he showed mastery and
a competitive spirit. He won many tournaments throughout his
lifetime and was a member of the Inglewood Golf Club for sixty-five
years. He played right up to last season. Bill passed on many
lessons to his family, the importance of hard work and persistence,
the value of a dollar, attention to detail, and finding enjoyment in
the small moments in life. His legacy lives on in the warm memories
of a life well lived. Bill was predeceased by Dora in 1998 and his
sister Nan in 2016. He is survived by his three children Don
(Caroline) Parker, Jim (Sheree) Parker and Leanne (Gerry) Erickson;
seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Bill lives in our
hearts forever. The family has planned a small private service on
March 14. In living memory of Bill Parker, a tree will be planted at

FULLER, Eugene
Milton, AB, V8808, RCNVR, killed - 29 Apr 1944, HMCS ATHABASKAN
- Born 07 Apr 1920 son of John Robert and Wilhelmina Frith, London,
ON. AB Fuller is buried in the Plouecat Communal Cemetery,
Finistere, France.
Eugene Milton Fuller, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Ernest M. Fuller, lost his life on April 29, 1944, when H.M.C.S.
Athabaskan was sunk by enemy action. After his enlistment in the
R.C.N.V.R. in Hamilton in 1941, and after his training at Hamilton
and Halifax, the young sailor saw a great deal of active service.
One of his most thrilling experiences was the part he played in
rescuing three airmen whose plane crashed into the North Sea. A/B
Fuller was at the time returning to his ship after being ashore to
secure mail from H.M.C.S. Niobe, Grennock, Scotland, when he saw the
helpless airmen. He then dived into the sea and brought out three
and tried in vain to reach the fourth flier, even risking his life
by going into the plane when it was under water. For his heroism and
courage he was awarded the Royal Humane Society's Medal and Ribbon
and Scroll. He was wounded in September, 1943, when the Athabaskan
was bombed by enemy planes in the Bay of Biscay. Born in Brantford,
April 07, 1920, Eugene attended King Edward School and the
Collegiate Institute. He also completed a course at the Brantford
Business College and upon graduation was employed at Proctor Packers
Ltd. Later he clerked at Loblaw's Groceteria Company, Ltd. He was a
member of Wesley United Church. It was at the Y.M.C.A. that he
pursued his interest in swimming and became a very skillful skater.

CD, PO.MM, V27102, RCNVR / 19118, RCAF (served RCNVR - 02 May
1941 - 20 Sep 1945) - Born 26 Feb 1921 Died 03 Jun 1997.
Awards and Decorations: 1939-45 Star, Atlantic Star with France and
German clasp, War Medal and Canadian Forces Decoration.
In a letter he wrote to his sister while in
hospital in Great Britain after leaving Ostend, he commented that he
was blown into the harbour and learned to swim in 2 seconds. Another
comment was that he had been in the habit of “borrowing” Wrens
rubber boots because they were not as loose as issued boots.
Unfortunately when blown into the harbour with flames all around, he
was unable to jettison those boots and received severe burns to his
lower legs and feet.
