TARVES, Laurie D. (04 Apr 1920 - 09 Oct 2014) - Peacefully, and surrounded by his family, our beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away at the age of 94, leaving us to mourn his loss, but also to celebrate a life so well lived. Born in Birch Hills Saskatchewan, Dad was proud of his prairie roots, and despite being a Stampeders' fan, we know he always secretly harboured "Rider Pride". The family moved to Calgary in 1929, and although his youth was profoundly affected by the Great Depression and World War II, he frequently reminisced with great fondness of those formative years. He and his brothers spent many carefree days fishing, hiking, camping in the Waiparous Creek and Bow Valley area and these happy memories sustained him right to the end of his life. The Tarves brothers also raised champion racing pigeons and would take a bird with them on their camping expeditions, sending the pigeon home with a note tied to its leg to let their parents know they had safely arrived at their destination. He was a talented athlete who was once offered a hockey scholarship in Santa Rosa, California, but turned it down to join the Royal Canadian Navy. He served in the Canadian Navy with his three brothers and was among the Allied forces participating in D-Day. On returning to civilian life in Calgary, he joined the Calgary Police Service where he served for 33 years. He was a proud member of the service and often talked fondly about those years and riding his "Harley" (even in -40 temperatures) which justifiably earned him the nickname of "The Ironman" from his co-workers. Laurie is survived by his children Jill (Jim), Rene (Steve), Kim, Launa and Tracy as well as grandchildren Shauna (Lee), Candice (Jeremy) and Evan, siblings Gordon Tarves, Gail (Jerry) Parcells, and Joan (Gordon) Evans, extended family June Tarves, Margaret Carr and Lavina Tarves as well as great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of sixty one years' Dallas, infant daughter Wanda, his parents Goldie and Gordon, his brothers Dale, Bruce and Terry as well as sister Beryl. Dad was a man of great integrity, strength, humor and kindness and a gentleman in the very best sense of the word. He valued his family above all else and was never happier than when he was surrounded by family and friends He leaves us with a lifetime of memories to cherish. Rest in peace #1 Dad, you will always be loved and forever missed. Relatives and friends are invited to a celebration of Laurie's life at Rotary House - Stampede Park (1410 Olympic Way S.E.) on Sunday, October 26, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to Trout Unlimited Canada 160 - 6712 Fisher Street S.E. Calgary, AB T2H 2A7 or The Calgary Poppy Fund 1 - 4539 6th Street N.E. Calgary, AB T2E 3Z6. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family is forever grateful for the kind and compassionate care provided by Drs. Robin Dargie and Paul Gladman and the wonderful staff of Dover Unit at Carewest Colonel Belcher Veterans Care Centre. We would also like to extend our thanks for the care Dad received from the doctors and health care professionals on Unit 82 at the Foothills Hospital, your kindness will not be forgotten

TARVES, Gordon Melville (18 Dec 1923 - 24 Dec 2014) - Gordon passed away at the Foothills Hospital 24 December, 2014 at the age of 91 years. Born in Birch Hills, Saskatchewan, our Father was an outdoorsman at heart, reminiscent of his prairie upbringing. The family moved to the then bustling town of Calgary in 1929, the year the first talking picture equipment was installed in the Palace Theater to serve the then 30,000 strong residents. The days were filled with outdoor activities that brothers would do in the then still pioneer western town of Calgary. After Navy service from 1942 to 1945 with his brothers, Gordon followed his love of the outdoors joining the Forestry Department as a Ranger and subsequently Alberta Power as a landman. Gordon loved nothing better than to head for the hills on his favorite horse or park the family in a camping spot far from neighboring campers. Gordon is survived by his children Donna (Dave) and Dale (Debra), sisters Joan and Gail. Gordon was predeceased by his beloved wife of 64 years, Ethel (nee Suttle), parents Goldie and Gordon, sister Beryl and brothers Dale, Bruce, Terry and Laurie. Portrait of Seaman Miles

RILEY, Joseph Allen (20 May 1921 - 11 Sep 2017) - Born in Saint John, New Brunswick to William John Riley and Margaret Moore. Predeceased by his beloved wife Myrtle Evelyn Linton and all his siblings: Louis, Leo, Bill, Ron, Chris, Patrick, Mary and Helen. A veteran of WWII, he served in the Royal Canadian Navy and had a long career in the Canadian Air Force. His wartime experiences formed the basis of his self–published “A Sparker’s War”. Al was active in community theatre and enjoyed writing scripts. He was especially proud of his one–act play that was produced on ATV Halifax. He enjoyed his grandchildren, the theatre, long walks, operas and Broadway shows, singing, reminiscing about his times at Lily Lake, Fort Howe and his home on Moore Street, writing letters to editors and trying to have more of his scripts produced. His perfect day would include classical music, apple pie and lottery tickets. Al always anticipated his annual visit to Saint John to reconnect with family and friends. In 2016, he moved into Sunnybrook Veterans Centre where the kind and compassionate staff cared for him with respect and a cheerful smile. We appreciate that so many staff joined us in honouring his service and his life in a flag ceremony after he passed. Al leaves behind his greatest legacy, his children: Kerry Riley (daughter Morgyn Johnston), Shawn Riley (wife Bev), Moira Kilgour (husband Barry), Aleen Riley (wife Melanie James) and Tracy Muir (husband Rob and sons Brian, Alex). The extended Riley/Linton clan, spread all across Canada, will remember him well. He was delighted that many of them were able to join him in celebrating his 90th birthday in Toronto. Al has been cremated and will be returned to his beloved Saint John.

COOPER, Hubert Stanley (Bert), RCNVR - WWII Veteran. On Saturday, January 5, 2019, after a wonderful Christmas filled with family celebrations and a few tots of rum, our beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully in his 96th year. Dearest husband for almost 72 years of Eunice, loving father of Philip and Valerie (Russell) and caring grandfather of Brenna (David) and Michael. Will be missed by his sister Joan, brother-in-law George, nieces, nephews and many friends. Predeceased by his parents Stanley and Alice as well as Hilda, Lionel, Bruce, Norma and Sharon. Born on April 16, 1923 in Kenora, Ontario, Bert was an amazing athlete. He played semi-pro hockey in Montreal and was chosen to attend the 1940 Olympics (cancelled) in track and field. Bert joined the navy at seventeen and served on the cruiser HMCS Uganda where he circled the globe and saw action in the south Pacific. After the war he worked at Montreal Locomotive Works and then met the love of his life, Eunice. Together they made a wonderful home in the new development of Crawford Park, Verdun. Bert worked very hard for his family eventually becoming President of Davanac Industries, a railway supply company. After retiring they moved to Toronto to be near their grandchildren and became a very important part of their lives going to every music concert, sporting event and graduation. Another passion was attending Phil's car races around Quebec and Ontario. In 2017 Bert moved to Sunnybrook Veterans Centre, K1W where he enjoyed many activities, such as music, physiotherapy and especially the Tuesday lunch group. We are very grateful to the Grant a Wish Program for making it possible for Bert to attend his granddaughter's wedding where he and Eunice shared a special dance. Thanks go to all the exceptional staff and volunteers on K1W for the care and love they gave to Bert including Dr. Chu, Linda, Lorna, Nora, Melissa, Glenn (Colonel Bogie), Jim and Doe – you all enriched his life. Funeral service has already taken place. Donations to the Grant a Wish Program at https://sunnybrook.ca/content/?page=veterans-grant-wish-program would be appreciated. And as Bert, ever the hockey fan, would say – remember to back-check! (Toronto Star 12 Jan 2019)

HMCS UGANDA

COUSE, John Alpine Scott, CPO Ordnance Artificer -  great sorrow, the family of John Couse announces his passing on January 6, 2019 at 98 years of age after a brief struggle with a respiratory infection. Just 12 days before, his children, grandchildren, their partners, and his caregivers had celebrated with him over a Christmas dinner at which his strength and equanimity were still much in evidence. John was the last of his generation to leave us and was predeceased by his four brothers and sister, as well as his wife, Phyllis, in 2009. Born at home in Cookstown, Ontario on August 28, 1920 to John R. Couse and Clara Monkman, he grew up with his four brothers and sister in circumstances he described optimistically as idyllic, but never got over the death of his mother in 1928 and younger brother, Paul, in 1934. He left home in 1937 without completing high school and took various jobs in northern Ontario as a mechanic, logger, and welder before enrolling in the Machine School in Galt, graduating at the top of his class to become a draftsman and millwright at a munitions manufacturer in Toronto. Enlisting on New Years Day 1942, to ensure the medical examiner's hangover would prevent him from noticing John's partial blindness, he went to sea for two years on the convoy escort frigate HMCS Montreal (K319) as an Ordnance Artificer, rising to the rank of Chief Petty Officer and serving until the end of the war. Returning to Canada, John opened and operated a machine repair shop in Cookstown with his brother, Keith, during summer months while obtaining his senior matriculation at Ryerson Collegiate in Toronto, before enrolling in Engineering at the U. of T. in 1946. During his last 'skule' year in 1950, John contracted tuberculosis, entering the sanatorium at Sunnybrook Hospital before his final exams. Expected not to live, U. of T. awarded him his degree on compassionate grounds, seriously underestimating his durability by 70 years. After convalescing, Dad embarked on his career in 1953, working with Cochrane, Cancorp (Baldrive), and Bundy of Canada over the years. He met the love of his life (and unstoppable force of nature) Phyllis Johnson, while skiing at Mont Tremblant in 1954 and they married in 1955. Family followed soon after with Chris (Carol Elder), Joel (Ariane Roumier), and Carolyn (Kim Jepson) being born in 1957, 1960, and 1962. After a busy and active career, John retired in 1985 to cultivate his many interests and enjoy his growing family, all of whom he loved unreservedly and in whose accomplishments he took enormous pride. He was seldom without a list of 25 projects launching or underway when he was not travelling or skiing, which he did until age 90. John was a great friend, mentor, partner, brother, father, grandfather, uncle, and neighbour. His occupations included paperboy, grocer's assistant, welder, draftsman, serviceman (RCN), blacksmith, machinist, mechanical engineer, manager, board member, and educator. Among his many pursuits he was a sailor, skier, duck hunter, fisher, music lover and musician, carpenter, amateur astronomer, beekeeper, apple farmer, builder, sundial maker, lip-reader, Francophile and French-speaker. John was passionately engaged with life and the people around him. He will be remembered by many as a consummate charmer, conversationalist, wit, raconteur, mischief maker, and avid fan of woman-kind. Deafness that neared totality from mid-life on and bouts with TB, prostate cancer, hernias, partial blindness, and cataracts did little to hold him back. John's life was long and his fortunes were great; as he would have said, he had 'a good run.' A reception to celebrate his life will be held on January 18th, following a service at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery Cremation Centre (formerly Mount Pleasant Mausoleum), Carfrae Chapel at noon. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Hearing Society would be appreciated. Published in The Globe and Mail from Jan. 12 to Jan. 16, 2019

Predeceased by his parents, Charles and Winnifred Beer, Chuck is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Susan, his daughters Janice (Steve) and Diane (Bill), and granddaughters, Lauren and Haley Mooney. Following service in the Canadian Navy on a destroyer in the eastern seaboard, he attended Victoria College and the University of British Columbia, graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce in 1949. Chuck had a long and successful career with Scotiabank, the bulk of that time specializing and pioneering in the fields of Human Relations and Employee training & development. In retirement his main pursuits were gardening, golfing traveling and woodcarving. Above all, throughout his life, Chuck was devoted to his family and friends. He was very proud of his daughters, their husbands, and his two granddaughters. He lived his life with a wonderful combination of consideration for others, kindness, graciousness, compassion and wit. All who knew him would call him a true gentleman. He was loved greatly and is deeply missed. FAWCETT, Robert Peter (Bob) - aged 78 years, passed away peacefully on January 5th, 2019 at TBRHSC. His loving family surrounded him for days while in hospital to support and love him on his journey to the spirit world. Robert was born to parents Edith (nee Finlayson) and Edgar Fawcett on January 13th, 1940 in Fort William, Ontario. He grew up as the eldest of seven and took on the role of "Chief" for his siblings when both parents died young. At the age of 18, Bob joined the navy sending half his paychecks home to help the family. He returned to Fort William where he began his family, marrying Diane Wragg. He spent the majority of his hard working life at the Great Lakes paper mill. Rain or shine, sick or healthy, Robert went to work instilling in his children, Michael and Jennifer, a strong work ethic and commitment to follow through. In 2004, Robert remarried to Marilyn Morrow Fawcett and the two enjoyed twenty-five plus years of laughter, love, and taking care of each other. His charm, love of life, the ability to dance up a storm at any party, and his gentle loving spirit made him a "favourite" to all our friends and "Uncle Bobby" to his nieces and nephews as well. Robert was deeply proud of his Indigenous ancestry and became a member of the Métis Nation of Ontario in 2015, after living a lifetime of knowing and honouring his roots. He passed along his deep respect of Indigenous ways of being to his family and he modelled inherently the values of walking a good path with kindness, courage and humility. In 1998, Robert joined the Thunder Bay Metro Lion's Club and dedicated over 20 years of volunteerism. He was a pillar of self-less service, even battling snowstorms and ailments to work at various fundraisers. He was proud of the work of this service club and likely one of the most dependable members of all time. He was an avid sports fan and some of his happiest times were taking his son Michael to various sporting activities through out the years. Bumpa, as his granddaughters Rilee & Shae-Lynne knew him, never missed a dance recital or special event in their lives. For Jennifer, he was her rock and unconditional support that enabled her to grow and flourish in her life and career. For his wife Marilyn, he was the love of her life, her rock through life's challenges, and her best friend. A love of travel took him to exotic and far locations around the globe and his family is sure his spirit will continue to visit many places, stopping for a beer along the way. Robert is survived by his wife, Marilyn Fawcett-Morrow; his son, Michael Fawcett (Cherryl); his daughter, Jennifer Fawcett (Walter), his grandchildren, Rilee and Shae-Lynne Willianen, Hannah, Illeana, Damon and Alex Fawcett; sisters Jean Beyko, Glenna Fawcett, Darlene (Wayne) Stokes and Ruby Fawcett; brother Jim (Flo) Fawcett, and numerous loving nieces and nephews. His father and mother, Edgar and Edith Fawcett, predecease him and he will be reunited with his brother Bruce Fawcett so the two can pull off a few more pranks together. A celebration of life will occur at the West Thunder Community Centre, 915 Edward Street South, at 4:30pm on Friday, January 11, 2019. The family is grateful for the condolences, and donations can be made, in lieu of flowers, to the Northern Cancer Fund or the Thunder Bay Metro Lion's Club.

TAIT, Donald Howard, Instructor LCdr, RCN (1927 - 2019) - A teacher, educator and public servant, Don passed away gently, at home in Ottawa early on January 5, 2019 with family around him and his beloved Shirley (Flemington) at his side. Don and Shirl had been side by side since meeting as students at Mount Allison University and marrying in 1952. To have Shirl as his wife was Don's deepest joy and proudest accomplishment. Don was the devoted father of Karen, David (Darlene Gunther) and Richard (Suzanne Bullock), and loving granddad of Sean and Ally Crighton (Karen, Iain Crighton parents). Don's little sister, Patricia (Bob MacDonald, deceased) of Dartmouth, N.S., survives him, along with brother-in-law Peter Flemington (Jean) of Toronto and many wonderful nieces, nephews, and cousins, whose lives Don followed with great interest and love. Don entered Mt. A to study theology, but graduated in 1951 with a BA in history and a B.Ed., beginning as a school teacher in Nova Scotia. He soon joined the Royal Canadian Navy as an instructor officer, and was promoted to lieutenant- commander in 1961. Don and Shirl began their family at Annapolis Royal, N.S., and moved to postings in Victoria, B.C., Dartmouth, N.S., Ottawa, Plymouth, U.K., Toronto, and back to Ottawa, where Don retired from the navy in 1974. He then worked for nine years as a training specialist with Revenue Canada Taxation in Ottawa. Through all his moves, Don never really left Dartmouth, N.S., which remained at the core of who he became. He was the son of Arthur Howard Tait, who had served in the First World War with the 85th Battalion Nova Scotia Highlanders, and Helen Masters Morash, who grew up on a farm in nearby Cole Harbour. Don felt blessed to have grown up on the shores of Lake Banook. He was committed to paddling and coaching (and dances) at the Banook Canoe Club, and was continually organizing basketball and hockey teams with friends. He was immensely proud of the women's war canoe teams he coached at Banook during summers home from Mt. A. Don was also grateful to those teachers in Dartmouth who helped him through early doubts at school, and felt much accomplishment when he earned an MA in history from Dalhousie University in 1962, despite a full-time naval career and three small children. Those struggles and accomplishments shaped him to be a fine teacher, a fine father, and a caring and loving husband most of all. The family is deeply grateful to the Champlain LIHN and to the skilled and kind helpers it provided. No service at Don's request. Interment will be at Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa in the spring. In lieu of flowers, Don's family encourages donations to wherever they may help others. (Globe and Mail 12 Jan 2019)

STEWART, Edith Winnifred, WRCNS (Wren) (nee MARTIN) May 29, 1918 - January 2, 2019 Born in Assam, India and immigrated to Canada in 1929 with her family (siblings Dick, Jack, Peter, Nancy, Muriel, Gwen and Connie). Passed peacefully in her sleep in Victoria, at the age of 100 years. Married in 1945 to Geoffrey James Stewart, she was predeceased by her loving husband of 65 years in 2010. She is survived by her children Jim (Bev), Dianne (Wayne Butterfield), Roy (Jenny), and Reg (Sonia Santarossa); 9 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren; her older sister Nancy Linnell, and sister-in-law Helen Cooper. Edie grew up in Victoria and completed her graduation at Victoria High School after which she enlisted and served with the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service (Wrens) until her marriage. She was a devoted homemaker, aspiring to elevate the level of holistic good health of all family members. In many ways she was ahead of her time with her passion for organic gardening and produce, homemade bread and baked goods. She was an avid composter, developed her own recycling and conservation methods and was actively involved in the successful campaign against the fluoridation of the City of Victoria's tap water many decades ago. She loved to take long walks, ride her bike, swim laps in the pool, and soak in the seaweed with her beloved sister, Gwennie when the families vacationed at Kye Bay Beach in the late 1950s and 60s. Geoff and Edie travelled to England, Scotland, Australia, Fiji, across Canada and the Northern United States and Alaska. Hawaii was a favorite destination for many years for family gatherings. In 1976 Edie and Geoff began wintering in Rancho Mirage, CA. They were greatly compatible and thoroughly enjoyed their life, interests, and activities together, along with family members, in the sunshine. Now they are together again, forever. Lovingly missed and always remembered. The family would like to extend special thanks to Edie's caregivers, especially Diana, and to the nursing staff at Hospice. A Memorial Service will be held in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, on Saturday, January 5th, 2019 at 1:00 pm. Light refreshments will be served following the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Victoria Hospice in Edie's name would be welcome.

MAZE, Richard Martin (Rick) (1935-2017)- of Brampton, Ontario. Predeceased by his parents Martin Joseph Maze and Elizabeth Katherine (nee Ortman) Maze. We are heart-broken to announce that our beloved Rick left us on December 11, 2017. He had struggled valiantly to live and to be home again but it was not to be. Daughter Lesley and Grand-daughter Dana were by his side, with each holding one of his hands, as he passed. Rick was the devoted and cherished husband of (Helen) Joy Maze, adored father of Lesley (Blaine Commandant) and Ian Maze. Loving Grandfather to Dana (Joe Astolfi), Rachel (Justin Galbraith) Kayla and Gary. Great-Grandfather of Livia and Step-Great-Poppa to Brooke. Dear Brother to Joan (Peter Shenher) , Doug (Norma) and Ralph. Dear Brother-in-law of Kathleen (Cyril Corry) and Alice (David Jamison). Much loved Uncle of Martin (Barb), Michelle (Charlie), Amanda, Katie (Brian), Michael (Angela), Martin (Melanie), Elizabeth (Alec) , Alan (Sharon), Stephen (Sandra), Colin (Jackie), Ian (Lorraine), Colin, Cathy (Noel Fenning) and Great Uncle to all of their children. Rick will be sorely missed by his many, many cousins across Canada. Rick met and married the love of his life Joy while serving in the Royal Canadian Navy and while stationed in Belfast, Northern Ireland. They would have celebrated 61 years of marriage on December 22nd. Moving from Northern Ireland to Nova Scotia to Northern Ireland and then to Ontario, Rick went where the work was. He and Joy started their family during this time and in 1965 Rick was posted to Germany by Litton Systems Canada to work with the RCAF. His assignment was for 6 months but lasted 7 ½ years. Rick and Joy made the most of their time overseas; when Rick wasn’t working , he and Joy and the kids went exploring. He would remain with that company for many years in different capacities, and would as a result, travel the world in his professional as well as his personal life. Rick and Joy returned to Ontario, Canada and built their forever home where they happily welcomed friends and family alike. They discovered boating in the late 70’s and Rick rekindled his love of sailing and the open water. Eventually, Rick changed his professional direction and worked with Navhouse, an Aerospace Navigation & Control Systems company, as their Technical Director. Rick adored his family and extended family and was adored by them in return. Music was a passion that he enjoyed sharing with others. Rick loved a good debate on any subject, was an avid reader well versed in the classics and would often recite from same; he could tell a compelling story or joke and was quick-witted with an incredible sense of humour. He made friends wherever he went and revelled in the camaraderie of others and what they too had to offer. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of many who knew him.

“His wings were ready but our hearts were not.”

The family will receive their friends at the Egan Funeral Home, 203 Queen Street S. (Hwy. 50), Bolton (905-857-2213) on Friday December 15, 2017 from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. Eulogy follows at 2pm. If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion.

GOODWIN, Donald Leslie (1922 - 2019) - 96, born in East Stewiacke, NS passed away on 16th January 2019. Don met Beth at Danforth United Church in Toronto when he spotted her in the church choir and joined it just so he could meet her. When he retired, his plans were well in hand and we recall the wallpaper of palm trees in our home...the dream of retiring in sunny Florida which he and Mom fulfilled. Those who were lucky enough to know him will recall his stories, such as running to catch the train to Truro from Stewiacke to go to school and a ‘cranky old conductor’ who one day gave Dad a helping hand onto a moving train as Dad was running beside it with a big smile on his face (Dad had that effect on people). Another of his Father riding his horse catching up with Dad as he walked to school on a bitter Winter’s day in Stewiacke, telling him to take the horse to school and ‘don’t worry, jump off when you get there and the horse will find his way home’ which it did. Hitchhiking to Mexico by plane while on leave from the Navy in Vancouver. Going to Broadway shows in the early 50s when living in New York while working with the Bank of Nova Scotia on Wall Street. He was a hockey coach, an avid curler, a golfer, a music lover and he loved gardening - he could make anything grow, even in the sandy Florida soil. Towards the end of his career he became a stockbroker for a few years just because it interested him. Dad loved living in the Valley and was happy to return following his time at the Bank of Nova Scotia in Kentville in the 40s. He is survived by Elizabeth, his wife of 64 years; his sister, Jean (Garth); his children, Helen, Dianne (Mitch), Pam (Bob); his grandchildren, Emily (Dan), William, Brendan, Colleen; and his great grandson, Sidney (Emily). Don is predeceased by his brother, George; his son, David; and his grandson, Emmett. A private funeral service will be held on Saturday, 19th January in Wolfville. Memorial donations may be made to the Brigadoon Village. Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home, Wolfville Funeral Chapel, 568 Main Street, Wolfville, B4P 1E5 (902-542-4656). DOWNS, Danial Steven (28 Mar 1955 - 03 Jan 2019) - of Clearwater, BC passed away suddenly on January 3rd, 2019 at 63 years of age. Born March 28th, 1955 in Quesnel, BC to Ernest and Reta Downs. Dan is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Leslie Downs, two sons Vincent (Cindy) Downs, Justin (Kayla) Downs, his mother Reta Downs, brother David (Yvonne) Downs, 7 grandchildren (Caitlyn, Kirsten, Tori, Hayley, Jayden, Tiannah and Darian) and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Dan served in the Navy at a young age and dedicated his working years to the logging industry where he was loved and respected by many. His passion was the outdoors; hunting, fishing, golfing, camping or just sitting around the fire in his own backyard enjoying a glass of wine. Dan was a family man with a contagious laugh who had a deep love and admiration for his wife "girlfriend" and his beautiful grandchildren. There will be an intimate celebration of his life at a later date. (Kamloops This Week 17 Jan 2019)

DAVIS, Robert Calvin (Bob) (21 Nov 1924 - 08 Jan 2019) - It is with great sadness we announce Dad's unexpected passing. Dad was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. At the age of 18, he enlisted in the navy. After the war, he spent a couple of years in Langley with his parents before they all made the move to Powell River. After working a few different jobs, he landed in the paper mill, where he spent most of his 39 years in the shipping department. Dad will be remembered for being a very hardworking man, for his compassionate and caring nature and his sense of humour. He loved to socialize and share a joke with people and was always humble and kind. Dad is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years Pearl, his son Dallas, daughter Shirley, two grandchildren Maranda (Bob) and Rob (Alicia), as well as many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. The family is grateful to Dr. Marentette, Dr. Tinmouth, Dr. Loewen, Dr. Watson and Dr. Gregory, as well as the nursing staff who cared for him at Comox Valley Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Comox Valley Hospital Foundation, Powell River Hospital Foundation and to a charity or cause of your choice. A private graveside ceremony will be held at 11 am on Friday, January 18, at Powell River Regional Cemetery in Cranberry, with a tea to follow at the (last) house Bob built. A celebration of life will be held from 1 pm to 3:30 pm on March 2, 2019, at Cranberry Seniors Centre. (Powell River Peak 18 Jan 2019)

DREAPER, Donald William (Don) (14 Jan 1919 - 06 Feb 2015) - Don passed away peacefully at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital. He leaves to mourn: his beloved wife Dorothy of 74 years; children: Bill (Sandi), Donelle, Bonnie Frankson, Lorna (Keith) Wood; ten grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son Rick in 1983 and brother John.

Don was born in Kitsilano, B.C. to Will and Helena who were new immigrants to the area in 1919. Don was extremely proud of his Irish roots. He actively kept alive the collections of stories which had been passed down through generations. His family relished in the beauty and activities which Vancouver had to offer. In the summer, from dawn to dusk, Don spent his time at the seaside Kitsilano pool where he watched and learned the art of swimming and diving from Mr. George Athens Sr. and in the winter, spent countless hours hiking his way up to Mount Hollyburn where he would backcountry ski. He became one with nature at a very young age.

Don moved to Victoria at the age of 14. It was here that he would later meet Dorothy (13 years old) at a ballroom dance lesson. The two became inseparable and would spend their future Saturday nights dancing at the Crystal Gardens (Empress Hotel), which would be a favourite gathering place with their friends. Rugby was Don’s interest during his high school years as Dorothy cheered him on from the sidelines. Don and Dot married on November 23, 1940 in Victoria, and then moved to Hamilton for a short time and then back to Victoria. During WWII, Don went on to proudly serve in the Navy as Chief Electrical Artificer on the navy ship Capilano, where he was heavily involved in the Battle of Britain. When he returned home from WWII, Don attended college at Craig Derrick Castle which later became UVIC. Life’s journey would end up steering Don into the B.C. Police Service and RCMP where he would be stationed in Ucluelet. Dorothy became his right hand woman and would attend to the jail while Don was on duty as the local Police Officer, Coroner and Fire Chief. Ucluelet would bring another dimension to outdoor play for the young couple and some of their greatest memories together would birth from the area. The couple were later transferred to Port Alberni, Victoria, and finally Nelson, again another outdoor adventure where Don would backcountry ski and hike into Kootenay Park during all of the seasons.

The move to Vernon came in 1967. Don loved the Okanagan and felt that every day was like living in paradise. His spare time was spent baking delicious organic bread, growing his vegetable garden, swimming, hiking, boating, writing, square dancing, taking classes and most of all cross country skiing at Silver Star. For 30 years Don served in the RCMP and during his final years ranked as Sergeant D. W. Dreaper. Don retired at age 56 from the RCMP, and worked part-time as a corrections and probation officer where he was able to make a difference in counselling young people, a gift which he found very rewarding. Don and Dorothy were fortunate to retire young and had the means gifted to them from their parents to travel all over the world. They saw it all; from mud bathing in Turkey to riding camels across the desert of Tunisia to walking the Great Wall of China.

Don was a very good father and husband. His family was always at the forefront of everything he did.

On behalf of the family, we would like to give a warm Thank You to Dr. Smit, Dr. Poulin, and the nursing staff at VGH for making Don’s last days comfortable.

Cremation and a small family service will commence at a later date.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Pleasant Valley Funeral Home, Phone: 250 542 4333. Condolences may be offered at www.pleasantvalleyfh.com

MARTIN, Michael Edward - The Honorable, Q.C. - died on January 13, 2019 one month from his 93rd birthday. Born on February 16, 1926 in Brandon, Manitoba, Mike was a true gentleman who emanated kindness and lived his life with integrity and humility. GOLDHAM, Robert (Bob) (12 May 1922 - 06 Sep 1999) - Long before he was hockey's first shot-block expert, and long before he was a popular analyst for CBC's Hockey Night in Canada, the "Golden Boy" was famous in his hometown for his love of sports. Robert Goldham was born May 12, 1922 in the small community of Georgetown, Ontario. Early archives from the local newspaper clearly show the pride that the town felt for their young sports prodigy. Goldham excelled in basketball, football, and rugby. However, it would be his accomplishments in hockey that would later bring him fame. The Georgetown Herald fondly remembers the youngster as a "little happy-go-lucky, dirty faced kid." He often hitched rides to watch games at Maple Leaf Gardens, riding in an apple box on the back of a truck. They recalled a boy who incessantly played shinny on frozen ponds and creeks, who would "monopolize the arena with the local James St. Gang" every chance they could get. Goldham learned much from these golden years, claiming that "playing with 35 guys divided by 2, now that's when you learn to skate and stick-handle." In a 1940 Globe and Mail article, writer Ted Pitkin described him as "real big-league timber...a lean, raw boned stripling of 16 who shook incoming forwards from stem-to-stern." The arena Goldham starred in was destroyed last year. Bob claimed that he never really learned hockey strategy until his days with the Toronto Maple Leafs. To help the "greenie," coach Hap Day teamed Goldham with veteran stalwart Bucko McDonald. Goldham praised his defensive partner for showing him the ropes, saying "Bucko told me to watch a forward's shooting shoulder, and when it drops, he's going to shoot. You have to study forwards just like a baseball catcher studies a batter to know what they will do." In the 1953 classic "The Hockey Book," author Bill Roche interviewed the legendary coach about the pairing. Day recalled a practice when he tried to teach the duo the fledgling art of the shot block. In his first attempts, Goldham deftly fell into the shots of the three forwards attempting to score. Bouncing Bucko, who Day described as a "stand-up-straight-and-knock-'em-down" type, was initially not quite so nimble. He dropped to the ice to thwart the rushing forwards, and then "straightened up with a jerk and howled to high heaven." He had stabbed himself in the butt with both skates. The gashes required stitches and a layoff from play, but Bucko eventually learned how to "guard the Leafs' rear- and his own, too!" In the 1940's, equipment was paper thin and primitive compared to today. With no helmet, Goldham would drop to one knee and keep his hands beside his body to take up as much room as possible from the shooter. The 200 surgical stitches to his face and head were a testament to the danger and effectiveness of his play. In a 1952 interview with The Hockey News Goldham explained to writer Marshall Dunn how this style once saved his team a goal against the Montreal Canadiens, but resulted in a ten inch scar on his face. He had dropped for a shot by Rocket Richard. "The Rocket followed through with his stick after shooting. I blocked the puck with my thigh pads and I blocked the stick with my face." During the second World War, Goldham spent three years in the Navy, which interrupted his career with the Leafs. He was stationed at CFB Cornwallis in Nova Scotia, and worked as an instructor. He put in a request to be drafted, but the captain at the naval base was an avid hockey fan and denied the request so he could play Goldham on the local Navy team. In a 1952 Herald story, Goldham displayed a self-deprecating humour. "Back when I was in the Navy, I was playing with a service team and we had Chuck Rayner as a goalie. Some one comes down, and I drop to block. I think the puck is under me, and I crouch with my head down waiting for the whistle. I'm still kneeling there when Rayner skates out and taps me on the shoulder. "Better get up now," Chuck says, "we're ready for the face-off...up at centre ice." "What had happened was that the puck had trickled through my legs, where the forward had picked it up and gone in to score. And there I was, still kneeling." After the war ended, Goldham returned to the Leafs. One night, rugged Irishman Pat Egan hit him with a bodycheck that fractured his arm. The injury required bone grafting and four metal screws. The Leafs called up Bill Barilko, who ended up taking Goldham's place on the roster. After his injury healed, Leaf owner Conn Smythe declared that Goldham was "neither mentally or physically fit to play. We are sending him to the American League with strict orders that he be given plenty of work to enable him to return to the Leafs as soon as possible." Shortly after, Smythe traded Goldham to Chicago. It didn't take long for the Blackhawks to fall in love with their new defender. On January 19, 1949, the Chicago Stadium Review crowed that it was "proven that he learned the three R's from the old school- Ram 'em, Rough 'em and Reel 'em." Robert Goldham won five Stanley Cup rings, two with the Toronto Maple Leafs. On September 6, 1999, he passed away from a stroke. He was surrounded by his loving family.
