WILLIAMS, David A. (Bungy) - passed away at Royal Jubilee Hospital on March 27, 1982 at the age of 73 years. He was born in Liverpool, England. He is survived by his wife, Frances of Victoria, BC; his daughter, Shirley and 3 grandchildren of Portland, Ore. Bungy served in the RCN from 1928 through 1949 and retired as a Chief Petty Officer. He received the DSM in 1945 and was mentioned in despatches. He retired as Chief Engineer of Shaughnessy Hospital in Vancouver in 1974. He was a member of the Esquimalt Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion No. 172 and Chief Petty Officer's Association where he served as parliamentarian and past president. Private cremation Memorial service will be held at the Protestant Maiden Chapel on March 31 at 2:30 p.m., Rev. H. Sylvester will be officiating. Flowers gratefully declined, donations may be made to the Salvation Army. Arrangement through the Memorial Society of BC and First Memorial Services.

DSM Citation:  WILLIAMS, David Anthony, Chief Stoker, 21256 - Distinguished Service Medal (DSM) - RCN/HMCS Uganda - Awarded as per Canada Gazette of 9 January 1943 and London Gazette of 1 January 1943, 5 January 1946 and London Gazette of 1 January 1946.

"For bravery and devotion to duty before the enemy. In carrying out duties demanding the safeguarding of German prisoners embarked in one of His Majesty's Canadian Destroyers from an enemy U-Boat, Chief Stoker Williams displayed the utmost zeal and resourcefulness under very unusual conditions. His conduct was marked by coolness and courage of a high order."

"Chief Stoker Williams has served in the Royal Canadian Navy for seventeen years. During the war, he has spent considerable time at sea, both in the Battle of the Atlantic and in the Pacific theatre in operations in HMCS Uganda. He has at all times given faithful and outstanding service to a marked degree.
