WORTH, Ernest Gerald - after a battle with cancer at Royal Jubilee Hospital on June 3, 1994 in his 75th year. Predeceased by his father, Ernest C. Worth in 1975 and his mother, Anne Worth in 1977, wife, Edna in 1978, sister Eileen Myron, and daughter Theresa Barron in 1986. Born on a houseboat off Canteen Road in Esquimalt on August 21, 1918, Ernie was raised in Vic West. He "got his matriculation" at St. Louis College, leaving school early to support his mother. On May 10, 1937, he joined the Navy and met his lifelong friend, Ken Campbell. During a 25 year naval career, Ernie served on many ships, including his favourite, the Crusader. The Navy gave him his nickname, Stumpy, a reference to his severed finger. A pipe-fitter and engine-fitter in BC shipyards after his retirement in 1962, Ernie landed steady work at the Veteran's and Royal Jubilee Hospitals, working as a painter and engineer before retiring in 1980. He was a member of the Chief's and P.O.'s Association and the Royal Canadian Legion, Britannia Branch. Ernie remarried in 1993, and leave his wife, Antoinette; his sister, Sister Helen Worth, SSA; daughters Kathryn Abbott, Mary-Ellen Purdy, and Jackie Adkins, sons Kevin and Ken, and five grandsons. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Holy Cross Church, Rev. Msgr. Philip Hanley celebrant, 4049 Gordon Head Rd. on Tuesday, June 7, at Noon. Reception to follow at Queenswood House, 2494 Arbutus Road. Flowers declined. Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society.
