They made the Ultimate Sacrifice
STEPHEN, Donald, L/Tel., V24255, RCNVR, MPK - 21 Aug 1944, HMCS ALBERNI - Son of Peter Stephen, and of Emily E. Stephen, of Fort Garry, Manitoba.
Leading Telegraphist Stephen died when his ship, HMCS ALBERNI, was torpedoed and sunk in the English Channel on 21 Aug 1944 by U-480, southeast of the Isle of Wight. Fifty-nine of her ship's company lost their lives.
Donald was raised in Fort Garry, M.B. and entered the business world with the Manitoba Telephone System. After his father`s early passing, he took on the added responsibility of being the head of the family, overseeing the care of his two brothers as well as his mother. He was active in the outdoors, enjoying canoe trips with his friends in the Whiteshell District. Stephen Lake northwest of Egenolf Lake was named after him in 1972.
