PHILLIPS, James George, OS, V64954, RCNVR, MPK - 24 Nov 1944, HMCS SHAWINIGAN - Son of Arthur W. and Lily Phillips, of Winnipeg, Manitoba.

 

OS Phillips died when HMCS SHAWINIGAN was sunk by U-1228 on 24 Nov 1944. Of her crew of 91, there were no survivors. James was educated at Wellington and Greenway schools and was employed by the Western Glove Company before enlisting in June 1943. The Province of Manitoba named Phillips Creek (64 J/4), which flows southwest into Morand Lake was named after him in 1995.

HMCS CORNWALLIS - Drafted to CORNWALLIS 14 Feb 1944

HMCS ANNAPOLIS - Served in ANNAPOLIS 22 - 29 Apr 1944 for training while drafted to CORNWALLIS

HMCS STADACONA - Drafted to STADACONA 08 Jun 1944

HMCS SHAWINIGAN - Drafted to SHAWINIGAN 12 Jun 1944
