Commissioned on 25 Jul 1919 as USS
MACKENZIE, she served three years with the
U.S. Pacific Fleet before being laid up in reserve at Mare Island,
California, in 1922. Briefly commissioned again during the first
year of the Second World War, she arrived at Halifax on 24 Sep 1940 and there, four days later, was transferred to the RCN. A month
later she burned out her No. 4 boiler and as a result had her aftermost funnel removed. Owing to reduced endurance,
ANNAPOLIS never
crossed the Atlantic, but spent her entire RCN career with Western
Local Escort Force (WLEF). In Jun 1943, she became a member of EG
W-8 and later, for a short time, W-10. In Apr 1944, she was relegated
to training duties at HMCS CORNWALLIS, also functioning as escort to
RN submarines between Halifax and Digby, N.S. Paid off at Halifax,
04 Jun 1945, she left later that month in tow for Boston, where she
was broken up.

William
Goodale, Steward, V40389, RCNVR - when
William was on HMCS Annapolis, his action station was the depth charge
launchers. He recounted one story of his time on Annapolis to his family
where he remembered how every time the ship entered port the Chief ERA would
get drunk because the engines and boilers were such a nightmare to work on.
