MATCHEM, Clarence Calvin, CD, C1SG, RCN - Resident of Orleans, Ontario, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at May Court Hospice in Ottawa, on Sunday, April 2, 2017 at the age of 67. Son of the late Thomas and Violet (Lilly) Matchem, was born in Gaultois, Newfoundland. Cherished and beloved husband of 38 years to Patricia (née McAndrews) and loving father of Nick (Kavee) and Chris. Dear brother of Jack (Effie); Victor (Shirley); Herbert (Frances), Ruth Priddle and Shirley (Harvey Rose). He was pre-deceased by brothers Edgar and James “Jim” and sister Charlotte Young. Clarence and Patti were married in Halifax September 1978. They lived in Cole Harbour where they raised their 2 sons before being posted to Ottawa in 1997. Since then the family has resided in Orleans, Ontario. Clarence joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1968 and served with dignity and devotion for 36 years. He served in numerous ships on the east coast as a Signalman/Naval communicator. Clarence served as the Chief Yeoman of Signals on Commander Standing Naval Force Atlantic staff and Sea Training Atlantic staff. He also served at National Defence Headquarters in the capacity of the Naval Communicator’s Career Manager and Branch Manager. Clarence’s final and most cherished seagoing posting was the more than two years he served in HMCS TORONTO as the ship’s Coxswain. After his release from the navy, Clarence spent another 10 years proudly serving his country as a member of the Federal Civil Service where he was Organization & Establishment Coordinator, Directorate Information Management Technology Support, National Defence. Clarence retired in 2016, after 46 years of loyal and dedicated service to Canada. Since his retirement he enjoyed a quiet life with his family and was an avid Senator’s fan. He loved woodworking. With his calm demeanor and logical outlook he will be forever missed by his loving family and many friends. Great appreciation is extended for the kind support of the staff at May Court and Dr. Vincent. A world of thanks to Wally and Mary Woodward for their loving care and compassion, in his time of need. Heartfelt thanks also to Pat Laming, Audrey De Ruyck and Serge Joncas for being there. Friends and family are invited to gather in the Hall of Colours of Beechwood, Cemetery Funeral and Cremation Services, 280 Beechwood Ave. (east of Vanier Parkway) on Friday April 7 at 10 a.m. A Memorial Service will be held in the Sacred Space at 11 a.m. followed by Interment at the National Military Cemetery of the Canadian Forces with military honours. SPACKMAN, Peter - On August 20, 2009 we lost our father and friend, Peter Richard Spackman. Peter was born in Okotoks, AB on April 1, 1926 and moved to Peachland when he was very young with his bride Helen. Peter was a vital part of the growth of Peachland and had a vision of the future. “People who never try anything don’t make mistakes” Peter is survived by his daughters Beverly (Cameron) and Joy, son John (Leeanne), five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. There will be a “Celebration of Life” at the Royal Canadian Legion Br #69 Peachland, on Friday, August 28, 2009. Open House from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. (Springfield Funeral Home)

SPACKMAN, Peter - “Peter is our youngest son and in February before his 18th birthday (April 1st) he joined the Navy. Received his call and went to Calgary May 1st. Left for Winnipeg May 7th. Left Winnipeg for Cornwallis, NS, June 19. Went to St. H in August. Finals in Cornwallis were passed with average of 96%. At St. H. took Radar Operator course. Came home for 3 ½ days Feb. 5. Had been taken from Corvette Arrowhead on which he had been since graduating in Sept. Left to go overseas to join cruiser “Ontario”. While at Douglas, Isle of Man, about ready to join Ontario though accidentally fell down 19 steps and broke kneecap. Plane crashed across bowes, killing both men in plane and two of four boys on bowes. Other lad had leg cut off at the hip. After two months nearly in cast, Peter travelled around England before arriving home August 22 on leave. On October 3, went to Esquimalt. THORSON, Arne Even (01 Nov 1922 - 23 Jan 2011) - Passed away peacefully while vacationing in Sidney, BC, surrounded by his loving wife of sixty-four years Evelyn, his daughter Valerie Berrien (Robert), and his son Reg Thorson (Laurel). He is also survived by a granddaughter Kirsten Miners (Dale), and grandson Andrew Thorson (Karine), great-grandsons Braiden and Gabriel Thorson, and brother Tom. THORSON, Arne Even - Mr. and Mrs. Thorson emigrated from Norway and moved to Okotoks in 1922, with their two children, Talbert and Inez. Dr. Ardiel delivered Arne a few months later at their home on Elma Street. According to the Okotoks history book, the article written by Arne, it states he was accident-prone and the good doctor made many visits to their home. Mr. Thorson left farming to become a grain buyer and he also had the Agency for British American Oil and worked long and hard hours to provide for the family still finding time to support community efforts. They were members of the United Church. Mr. Thorson was also on the town council for many years and served one term as the mayor of Okotoks. All children were educated in Okotoks. Len Gavel adds, “In the winter, we used to play hockey on the river all day. Arne was an excellent hockey player, swimmer and diver. We’d swim in the Sheep River, near the old Lineham Mill site. It was elevated from the driver. It was deep. The basin was scrubbed clean. There was an earth platform made from dirt and rocks. The action of the Sheep River kept the basin clear. One spring, Arne dove in and the channel from the year before had changed. He got scraped up a bit!” Arne served with the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve (RCNVR). After the war, in 1946, he married Evelyn Hanson. “He went into the oil business,” says Lawrie Wedderburn. They had two children and resided in Calgary where he had been self-employed in the oil well servicing industry for many years. ("She Made Them Family" by Anne Gafiuk)

HURST, Stanley D. - “His dad had a trucking business,” says Lawrie Wedderburn. On June 21, 1921 Stanley Hurst was born in the home of his parents and grandparents, which had been a school moved into Okotoks from a mile north of town. “His nickname was ‘Bung’,” says Len Gavel. Stanley attended school in Okotoks then worked in the Turner Valley oil fields in 1939. Joining the navy in 1942, he spent most of the next three years on a minesweeper in the English Channel. Stan married Luella May Baxter from Cupar, Saskatchewan in 1945 and their daughter, Sandra Jean, was born in 1946 in Calgary. Stan and his family moved to Rossland, BC in 1947 where he worked in Trail for Consolidated Mining and Smelting. Their son, Marlin, was born in 1948. Stan and Luella retired to Victoria. WALTER, Kenneth - Another neighbour’s boy who signed up as soon as was 18. Went through high school here, was a good worker and well liked by his chums. Did very well during his training in signals both in Cornwallis and St. Hyacinth. Went from home on his two week leave to Halifax and from there to St. John’s, Newfoundland. McKAY, Wesley Cornelius, V76805, RCNVR / Chief Petty Officer 1st Class Hull Technician, 51420-E, RCN / C.A.F. (Navy) (01 Oct 1924 - 19 Jan 2016) - Dad peacefully passed away at the age of 91. Predeceased by his wife Anita in 2012, he leaves behind his sons Richard (Barb) and robin (Dawn). Dad was born and raised in Victoria and joined he Royal Canadian navy in 1943, attaining the rank of CWO1 and proudly served his country for 25 years. He rounded out his career as a shipwright at HMC Dockyard. Upon retirement Dad could be found gardening or happily turning out endless creations in his workshop. He was also an avid photographer and fisherman and a member of the Golden Rods and Reels Club. Participation in the O'Donnel Creek fish habitat restoration project was one of his memorable achievements. Dad, you will be missed.

HOCKINGS, Daphne Rose, CD, Lt (NS), Registered Nurse, RCN (1928-2017) - Passed from this life on March 8, 2017. Born in Proserpine, Australia, Daphne was a daughter of the late Henrietta Geraldine (Schumacher) and Herbert Ambrose Hockings. Following some time working as a Registered Nurse and Registered Midwife in Australia she moved to London, England. In 1954 she immigrated to Canada continuing her profession in Kirkland Lake, Ont. and Fort Simpson, N.W.T. In 1957 Daphne joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served in Naden, Rockcliffe, Stadacona. She continued to advance her professional knowledge and graduated from Dalhousie University with a diploma in Nursing Administration in 1969, and then continued her military service at Shearwater, Cornwallis, 3 wing Germany, Kingston, Shilo, and Masset until her retirement in 1973. Daphne returned to Australia where she accepted a position as matron at Wanthaggi District Hospital in Victoria, B.C. Five years later Daphne's adventurous spirit brought her back to Canada where she embarked in a ministry of prayer by opening Bethany House of Prayer in Greenwood Square under direction of Rev. Claude Shea. Daphne will be fondly remembered as a spirited, fun-loving, strong, faith-filled woman who stood firmly for what she believed in. Her profound belief in the power of prayer carried many people through challenging situations. Her witness of faith often was instrumental in helping many folks move in a new direction in their lives. Daphne has been a member of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Women's League since 1978 and has been richly blessed by the generosity of the deep caring spirit afforded to her by sisters of the league. Daphne was preceded in death by brothers, Edwin and Kevin. She is survived by nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews in Australia. Visitation will be held on Monday, March 13 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in Berwick Funeral Home. GADBOIS, Bryce Joseph - 83, of Dartmouth, passed away peacefully, December 14, 2011, in Dartmouth General Hospital, after a brief illness. Born in Cornwall, Ont., he was the son of the late Ruben and Alice (Dube) Gadbois. He served in the Armed Forces for over 26 years and was a veteran of the Korean War. After retirement, he worked for the Dartmouth General Hospital for many years and was one of the first employees when it opened. Survived by his son, Stephen (Lynette) of Dartmouth; daughter, Suzanne of Halifax; sister, Blanche Aslanian of Kingston, Ont.; and special friend, Janet Tanner of Dartmouth. GONEAU, Leo Arthur, PO. RCN - 77, Halifax, passed away peacefully November 21, 2007, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in Midland, Ont., he was a son of the late Arthur and Katherine (Fitzgerald) Goneau. At a young age, he went to work in the Midland Shipyards. In 1947, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy as an ordinary seaman in the Steward Branch. In 1950, he was drafted to the Coast Diving Unit where he conducted his naval diving tasks in many various places throughout the world, including Puerto Rico, the Arctic and Bermuda, to name a few. Leo served aboard HMCS Magnificent, Haida, Columbia and Cape Scott, and he was also one of the founding members and a past president of the Canadian Naval Divers Association. After retirement from the navy in 1974, he worked at NSCAD as well as owned his own cleaning business, retiring in the mid 1990s. Leo spent many happy hours with his family, especially his grandchildren, as well as his four-legged "pal", Miss Chloe. Surviving are his daughters, Nancy (Everett) Cleversey, Sydney; Jackie (Terry) Burke and Connie (Roger) Keefe, both of Lower Sackville; son, Michael, Halifax; grandchildren, Leah, Randy, Matthew, Sara, Erin, Evan, as well as seven great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and companion, Ann Drake; brothers, Neil and Bernard (Elva), both of Midland, Ont.; sisters, Beryl Girard, Audrey Head, and sister-in-law, Verna Goneau, all of Midland, Ont. He was predeceased by his wife of 30 years, Bernice (Richards); brothers, Donald and William; sisters, Florence, Eileen, Helen. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax, where the family will receive visitors 7-9 p.m. Friday. GALE, Ernest Edward (Buster) - 69, Lower Sackville, died August 12, 2008, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Anthony and Mary (Binns) Gale. He served with the Royal Canadian Navy/Canadian Armed Forces from 1955 until 1993. He was employed by the Corps of Commissionaires until retirement in 1999. He was a founding member of the Royal Canadian Legion Calais Branch 162, Lower Sackville. He loved sports and particularly enjoyed golf. He was a member of the Atlantic Chief's and Petty Officer's Association and the South Shore Naval Association. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. Born in Gault, Ont., he was a son of the late Elton and Louise (Kehler) Goudie. Lorne was retired from the Royal Canadian Navy and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Korean War Veterans Association, Caen Branch - Royal Canadian Legion and the Atlantic Chiefs and P.O.'s Association. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, the former Alfreda Doucet; children, Cheryl Goudie (Johnny), Bedford; Norman (Theresa), Burlington, Ont.; Patricia Bishop (Michael), Dartmouth; Michele Goudie-Hildreth (Bruce), Dunnville, Ont.; Lorne P. GREELEY, Malcolm Solomon - 85, Leiblin Park, Halifax, passed away September 24, 2010, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in Portugal Cove, N.L., in 1924 to the late Clement and Sarah Greeley. He was the husband of the late Marion Greeley. Malcolm served as a Chief Petty Officer (Engineering Branch) in the Royal Canadian Navy/Canadian Armed Forces serving from July 27, 1943 ending October 21, 1969. He was a veteran of the Second World War and was awarded the 1939-45 Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, War Medal 1939-45, Canadian Forces Decoration and Clasp. He was a chartered and life time member of the Atlantic Chief and Petty Officers Association. After retiring from the service he worked as a Chief Engineer at the Nova Scotia Hotel, Cadillac Fairview and Standard Life. He will be greatly missed by family and friends. He is survived by his children, Shirley Kennedy, Malcolm, Louise Harper, Douglas, Doreen Logan, Terry, Robert, Caritha, Angela Wilcox, Elizabeth Higenell; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place under the direction of J.A. Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd. In keeping with Malcolm's wishes there will be no visitation or service. Perth county share in the casualties inflicted by the explosion at Halifax. Official word has come from that city of the death from injuries of William S. Loney, son of Mrs. Loney, R.R. No. 1, Britton. He was a stoker in the R.N.V.R.

GREER, Gerald Eugene (Gerry) - a life member of the Canadian Naval Memorial Trust who served in the RCN 1955-1965 passed away in High River, Alberta in February 2016 at age 78. Gerry undertook new entry training at HMCS Cornwallis and served in HMC Ships Haida, Lanark, Saguenay, Bonaventure, Shelburne and at CANCOMFLT. In civilian life he was involved in the construction industry and operated his own company, Greer Contracting Ltd. In addition to CNMT, he was a life member of the Calgary Navy Vets Association, and a member of the Royal Canadian Naval Association and the Royal Canadian Legion, High River. He is survived by his wife Gerry, daughters Carla, Kendra and Leslie and a number of grandchildren; he was predeceased by daughter Kim. (Action Stations! CARTWRIGHT, William (Bill), P1WS, 18403-E, RCN (served 28 Jun 1953 - 28 Jun 1973) - Passed away in the Jubilee Hospital, December 9, 2013. He was born in Victoria, June 28, 1936. He spent 20 years in the Navy and after retiring, started his own construction company. In his younger years he loved to hunt and fish but as time went on, enjoyed his beach home in Mill Bay. He was predeceased by his dad Reg, brothers Ken, Doug & Bruce. Survived by the loves of his life, Ruby and son Rick, mother Clara & sister Connie plus many nieces and nephews. CHAPMAN, James Archibald (06 May 1924 - 21 Nov 2013) - Jim was known for his sense of humour and his love of life. His life ended at the Broadmead Lodge with his wife, Shirley, at his side and surrounded by the love of his children. Jim was born in Edmonton, Alberta. He joined the Navy as a boy seaman soon after moving to Victoria. During World War II he served on corvettes accompanying convoys between Newfoundland and Ireland. After the war he was posted at Naden until his release in 1947. It was there that he met Shirley Banner. They were married in 1948 and had 4 children. Family was very important to Jim. He helped his children every way he could. That love was reciprocated by all his children. The oldest daughter, Dawn (Theresa) passed away in 1996. He is greatly missed by his surviving children; Shari (Pat), Clifford (Mary Jane), Scott (Amanda); his grandchildren Scot, D'Arcy, Darin, Andrew, Kara, Daimeohn, and Claire ; great grandchildren Essence, Unity ( and their mom, Amber) and Kyra; many in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Jim worked for BC Electric/ Hydro from 1950 to 1984. He worked on the Island and at the Bennett Dam. He retired as an electrician. His passions included flying small aircraft in Victoria, golfing at Mount Breton golf course in Chemainus and resting in Mill Bay. Through all the moves travel was important - camping in tents, campers and trailers all over Canada and the United States as well as visiting Maui and gambling trips to Reno and Skagitt. A celebration of the life of this wonderful man will be held at First Memorial Chapel, 4725 Falaise Drive, Saanich at 11 am on Wednesday, November 27, 2013. A short reception will follow the service. CLEGG, Frederick (Fred), Canadian Merchant Navy, RCNVR - Born and raised in Vancouver, Fred passed peacefully at age 97 to join his wife Dee, brother Harry, sisters Lou and Doris. A sailor at heart, he went to sea as a lad to serve in the Merchant Marine and Navy. Settling down with a young family, he found his way onto the Shell fuel barge in Coal Harbour eventually taking over as agent until he retired. Always amiable, he had many friends and acquaintances around the waterfront and New Westminster, living at home until his final months. He will be greatly missed by loving family, daughters Sandra (Ron), Susan (Dave), granddaughter Sara (Paul) with great-granddaughter Lola. With many thanks to loving friends, caring neighbours, Dr. Yap and the wonderful caregivers at Bayshore, Royal Columbian, Queens Park and George Derby. No service by request. ELLIS, Thomas Charles (1926 - 2013) - It is with sadness we announce the sudden passing of Tom Ellis on November 29, 2013. Tom was predeceased by his beloved Colleen, and is survived by his son Steve (Lori) and daughter Vickie (Simon) and grandchildren; Christina, Brittney, Jackson and Sydney. Tom was in the Signal Corp at the end of WW2 with the Royal Canadian Navy and then joined BC Hydro in 1952 retiring after 36 years of service as a company accountant. An avid golfer, he spent the next number of years as a snowbird travelling to Arizona with Colleen. They also spent many happy years travelling through the States and other parts of the world. MOORE, Richard Stewart (Archie) - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard Stewart "Archie" Moore, 86 years of age on Saturday, March 25, 2017. Richard was a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Richard is survived by his son Donald (Joy), grandchildren Lindsay, Kristin, and Ryan, and great-grandchildren Easton, Zoe, Callie, Liam and Gray. Richard was predeceased by his loving wife Marguerita and son Richard Jr. Archie had a very active life. At age 18, Archie joined the Canadian Army Reserves as a medic. Soon after, Archie joined the RCN and served aboard HMCS Nootka, a tribal class destroyer for two years. Archie transferred to the Army in 1957 where he became a member of the Canadian Guards. When the Guards were disbanded in 1969, Archie was patched over to the RCR, and in 1973, Archie was again patched over to the PPCLI in Winnipeg where he retired from active duty in 1978. Archie continued with the Camerons of Winnipeg for several years. Archie was a member of the Canadian Guards Association, The Canadian Vietnam Veterans Association, and the Atomic Veterans Recognition Program. Archie was also an accomplished athlete. At 18 years of age, Archie was the amateur middleweight boxing champion of Halifax with a record of 36-1. Archie also was accepted as an NHL linesman in 1965, however opted to remain with the military. Archie was also mentored by Danny Gallivan, the famous Montreal Canadiens announcer to become a hockey announcer. Archie spent many hours in the booth at the old Montreal Forum. Archie was a devoted family man who will be sadly missed by his son and daughter-in-law and his grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 10 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard. MONTGOMERY, Edward Harold (Monty) - passed away peacefully with his daughters by his side on April 4, 2017 at Deer Lodge Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba at the age of 89 years. Monty is survived by his wife of 68 years, Phyllis D. Montgomery (nee Henderson) and his six surviving children, Barbara Wipf (Paul), Edward "Gar" (Connie), Doug (Donna), Beverly Montgomery-Foster (Fred), Diana Montgomery/Hanslip (Ray), Lloyd Montgomery, and Donnie in Heaven. He has 13 grandchildren, Michael Hunt (Millie), Brad Hunt, and Jackie Hunt (David); Carolyn Brightnose (Dale), Dan Montgomery (Theresa), Michael Montgomery (Carly); Matthew Montgomery (Barbara); Mackenzie, Duncan, and Christina Murta; Joshua, Katey and Eliza Montgomery, as well as 14 great-grandchildren and seven great great-grandchildren. Dad is also survived by his brothers, Don and Bill Montgomery (Joan) and one sister-in-law Evelyn Hjeldness; numerous nieces, nephews, good friends and neighbours. Monty was born in Winnipeg to William and Rose Montgomery (nee St. Germaine) on November 24, 1927. He was raised in Winnipeg's North End during the Great Depression with his three brothers, Bill, Lloyd and Don. During the Second World War his two older brothers joined the Royal Canadian Navy and Dad, eager to serve, convinced his father to let him join up at the age of 16--lying about his age by one year. Thankfully all three brothers came home. In 1947, Dad met the love of his life at a dance hall in Winnipeg, Phyllis Henderson. Mom and Dad married on December 4, 1948. Soon after, the babies started coming, seven in total. In the late 1940s Dad started working with his father in the plumbing business, the beginning of a long successful career. During the 1950s the family moved for a few years to Castlegar, BC and then Coaldale, AB, eventually returning to Winnipeg. In 1962, Dad and Mom bought a brand new home on Knox Street in Assiniboia, where they remained until moving to Deer Lodge Center a few months ago. In addition to his service in the Second World War in the Navy, Dad also served in the Queen's Own Cameron Highlander's Pipes and Drums, first as a tenor drummer, then he was promoted to Drum Major in the 1960's, a post he took most seriously and proudly. He retired from the Cameron's in 1982, and also served as Drum Major in the Khartum Shriner's Pipes and Drums, the Manitoba Pipes and Drums, and, more recently, ANAVETS Unit 283 Pipes and Drums with his daughter Barbara, who remains a piper with the 283. Monty was passionate about life and passed that joy to his children, grandchildren, and really anyone who came in contact with him. He loved his wife, his family, his pets, his hockey, his pipe bands, his work, all his friends and the odd beer or two. Not always in that order, however love was always central to his life and the absolute center of that was Mom. Don't worry Dad we'll take care of her for you, like you always did us. Rest in peace and raise a glass with all those who were waiting for you to arrive to get the party started. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Deer Lodge Center-3W for all their kind and considerate care of Dad for the past few months. We appreciate every kind word, gesture and the tears and hugs you shared with us when Dad took his final sleep. Two-thirds of the Montgomery siblings would like to extend an extra special thanks to our sisters, Bev and Barb, for carrying the heaviest of burdens. No words will be enough to express our thanks and love, and it's fitting you were both there when he passed. McLAUGHLIN, John Ernest (Jake) - Born June 18, 1931 Montreal Quebec. Died March 29, 2017, Burlington Ontario. Served in Fleet Air Arm, Royal Canadian Navy, stationed on HMCS Magnificent Founder and publisher Canadian Automotive Fleet magazine. Survived by wife Patricia McLaughlin (nee Abbott), sons Michael (Norah Kennedy) and Keith (Beth McLaughlin) and his four grandchildren; Alec and Emma Kennedy McLaughlin, Erin and Jake McLaughlin. A memorial will follow with dates to be announced. Donations to The Salvation Army or your local Humane Society would be welcome. The family wishes to express its sincere gratitude to the staff on 5 West at Joseph Brant Hospital for the excellent care extended to Jake in his last days. SAUNDERS, Russell Grimes (Russ) - WWII Navy Veteran, aged 93 years. Born in Carleton Place, ON on December 28, 1923 to parents Richard Arthur Saunders and Doretta (nee Dupont). Doretta passed away after giving birth to Russ. He was raised by his grandparents Albert Saunders and Minnie (nee Haerly). In 1939, at the age of 17, Russ joined the Royal Canadian Navy and was assigned to the HMCS Lanark. On April 5, 2017 at 12:33 am, at the Perley and Rideau Veterans' Health Centre, Russ peacefully passed away surrounded by his family and loving wife of 70 years, Doreen (nee More) of Almonte, ON. Beloved father of Kerry (Linda Corbin), Boyne (Marilyn Murphy), Suzanne (John Simpson), and Lori (Roy Heuving). Cherished grandfather of Shannon Maker (Mike), Logan Saunders Matte and Kayla Saunders. Great grandfather of Charlotte, Amelie, Sienna, August and Kase. Survived by his brother Arnold. Predeceased by siblings Albert, Lucille, Joy, Richard, Merwin, Shirley and Calvin. Loving son-in-law of the late Milton More and Elizabeth "Betty" More of Almonte, ON. Brother-in-law of Logan More (Jean), John More (Ruth), Ann Bourgoin, the late Laurie More and Bertram More (Bernice). He will be lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews. SZABO, Leslie (16 May 1935 - 30 Mar 2017) - beloved husband of 63 years to Lois Szabo of Calgary, passed away at the Dulcina Hospice on March 30, 2017 at the age of 81. He will be lovingly remembered by his children, grandchildren, and great- granddaughter, as well as his extended family, friends and neighbours. Les knew and saw war firsthand as a child born into war- torn Europe. By the time he was eight years old, his mother and father had died. He lived with his grandmother until she died when he was ten years old. At this time he walked through Hungary away from the advancing Russian army into Austria, which was occupied by the British army. When Les was twelve, he was declared a displaced child and lived in an IRO Children's home in Leoben, Austria. He lived in the children's home for three years at which time he was cleared for refugee status. The United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration brought him to a Canadian orphanage in Ancaster, Ontario. Les landed in Canada on his 16th birthday. Les had two passions in life: to have a family and home and to be the best Canadian he could be. He joined the Canadian Army in 1956. During his 25-year career, he served proudly with the 2nd Battalion Queens Own Rifles of Canada. He later transferred to the Royal Canadian Service Battalion where he was assigned to the RCN HMCS Chaudière, Canadian Airborne Regiment and Lord Strathcona's Horse. Les was so proud to have also served twice with NATO in Germany, as well as five tours of duty overseas as a United Nations Peacekeeper. His many peacekeeping missions were his way of helping other people and countries as he had appreciated being helped. Whenever time allowed from his military duties, Les spent every minute and all his energy with his family. In retirement, he enjoyed and knew all of his neighbours, making toys and "things" in his workshop or going fishing with his dog. A very loving, kind and gentle man who gave his all to family, friends and his country (Canada). BALFOUR, James Pascoe (Jim/Jake), P1WS, 16977-E, RCN / CAF (served 27 Mar 1951 - 17 Nov 1978) - Born on October 10, 1931 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2017 in Victoria, BC. Predeceased by beloved wife Elizabeth (nee Betty). Survived by sons Robert of Winnipeg and Richard (Cindy) of Victoria, granddaughters Brittany (Phil) and Chantelle, great grandchildren Mia and Tyson. When of age Jim made his way to Victoria and joined the navy serving in Korea and staying in until 1978. He then worked at Juan de Fuca Rec Centre for 12 years. WATSON, Donal F. - Born in Verdun Quebec on February 9, 1923, has passed way in Victoria. Loving husband of Audrey. Sadly predeceased by son Donnie at 39. Survived by wife Audrey, grandson David Watson (Bianca) granddaughter Jessica, Debbie Bird (Malcolm) and grandsons. Don spent a happy youth in Pointe Claire and following graduation from Westmount High in 1940 worked with CP Railway until age 18. He then enlisted in the wartime Royal Canadian navy in which he sailed extensively in all years 1941 to 1945 as escort 'Battle of the Atlantic' overseas convoys. Awards included, rare for Canadians, The Soviet Union's Victory Medal. Rejoining Canadian Pacific at war's end he retired in 1983. Audrey and he soon moved from Hudson to Victoria where he enjoyed many years of lawn bowling, tennis and duplicate bridge, with a final rest in Field of Honour, Pointe Claire. FAYNOR, Paul (O.T.) (02 Feb 1928 - 11 Nov 2013) - passed away peacefully on Remembrance Day with his family by his side. He was predeceased by brothers William, Steve, and John, daughter Joan, first wife Ena and his loving partner Margaret. He is survived by children Dawn (Al), Zara (Bruce) and Dave (Keltie), sisters Ann, Millie, and Kay, 6 grandchildren, 7 great-grand children and several nieces and nephews. Born in Czechoslovakia, his family moved to Rimbey AB in 1934 and then on to Creston. Paul served in the Navy during WWII before marrying. They raised their family in Creston where he was a successful businessman and a founding member of many clubs and charities. A gifted, competitive athlete and avid card player he was tough to beat at any game and represented BC in chess. Moving to Coquitlam in 1972 he sold real estate and until he was 81, built hi-rises with his son Dave. He was a member of the Vancouver Golf Club and the Legion. A great man with a huge heart he was happy, kind, generous, fair and loyal. He worked and played hard. With his million dollar smile, sense of humour, charm and dance moves he was the life of the party and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. There will be a Celebration of Life Dec. 12th from 2-4 at the Crescent Branch of the RCL at 2643 128th St Surrey. Please feel free to donate to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in his memory. HENNIS, John (Jack), P1SN, 35136-E, RCN/ C.A.F. (served 19 Aug 1955 - 18 Aug 1980) - A native son of Victoria, BC, passed away in the Royal Jubilee Hospital, on November 11th, 2013. Born in Victoria, BC on May 8th, 1938 age 75 years. Survived by his loving wife Glenda; son, Sean (Joanne); daughter, Sheryl (Parry); grandchildren, Joshua (Kelsey), Katelyn (Matthew), Matthew and Kyle; brother, Bill Hennis. Jack served in the Royal Canadian Navy for 25 years, after retirement from the Navy he worked for the Ministry of the Attorney General for 10 years. He was past president of Esquimalt Minor Hockey and the Old-timers Hockey, and also chairman of the Pacific Cup. He was an active member of the Chief & Petty Officers Association, the "Q", Masonic fraternities, Gizeh Shrine Centre, and the Victoria Shrine Clown Unit. Celebration of Jack's life will be held on Monday, November 18th, 2013 at 2:00 pm in the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #172, 622 Admirals Road, Esquimalt, BC V9A 2N7. Flowers gratefully declined. JEROME, Reo Joseph, RCNVR (1924-2014) - Passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side. Predeceased by Granddaughter Jaymee, Brother Ron, Sister Sal, survived by the love of his life, Wife Junie and the best children in the world Rhonda (Jim), Julia, Katherine (John), Reo (Sandee), 13 Grandchildren, 1 Great grandson, Sisters Olivette & Vivienne. Reo joined the navy at age 17 & served overseas in WW2. He enjoyed a 35-year career with the New Westminster Fire Department & retired as Asst. Chief. Reo grew up loving sports and in 1950 this versatile athlete became the first winner of the Vic E Andrew trophy as the most outstanding athlete in New Westminster. McGREGOR, William John Gordon, Petty Officer 2nd Class Engineer, 6635-E, RCN - passed away peacefully in the company of his family on Nov. 15, 2013 at Royal Jubilee Hospital. Born May 15, 1928 in Winnipeg, Gordon lived most of his life in Victoria after retiring from the Royal Canadian Navy in 1969. Predeceased by brother Mervyn and parents William & Anne McGregor, survived by his loving wife of 63 years Shirley Irene (Harrower), their four sons David, Donald (Christina), Robert, and Ian (Stacey), seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. McBURNEY, Harold Clarence (Harry) (Clare), Slt, CommO, RCNVR - died peacefully on Thursday February 27, 2014 in Tsawwassen, BC at the age of 96. He survived his wife of 71 years, Billie, by four months. Clare was born on May 22, 1917 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the 5th of 6 children. He grew up in Winnipeg's North End, graduating from St. John's High School. After graduation he was lucky to find employment as a paymaster for a gold mine in Northern Manitoba. After the mine closed down he found work on the Canadian Pacific Railway, then the war came. . Clare served as a Communications Officer in the Royal Canadian Navy during the war, helping to guard the merchant fleets that brought vital supplies from North America to England. In the midst of WWII, on December 12, 1942, Clare married his sweetheart Billie in her hometown of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Following the war Clare continued to work for the CPR in the Sleeping and Dining Car Department. His job moved the family from Moose Jaw to Calgary to Winnipeg to Montreal and then finally to Tsawwassen. After retirement Clare briefly took the job of school bus driving. In his leisure time Clare was an avid curler and golfer. He spent countless hours caring for the wonderful wooded garden he maintained on his property on Stevens Drive. . Clare is survived by his children Pat, Mike (Janet) and Betty (Henry); grandchildren Ryan (Nadia) Kinrade, Erin Kinrade, Diana (Adam) Loyer, Andrea McBurney, Christopher, Colin (Suzy) Mingus; and 8 great-grandchildren. His life was full of love and pride in his family, and he will be remembered with admiration and gratitude by his descendants. Please celebrate his life with fond memories. McCAW, Thomas, RCNVR (10 Jan 1926 - 07 Dec 2013) - Passed away suddenly and peacefully at home. Married for 59 years, Tom is survived by his wife Therese (Terry). Predeceased by parents Rachel and Samuel McCaw, brothers Charlie, Jimmy and Alex; and sisters Margaret, Kathleen, and Betty. Tom is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews in Winnipeg and Victoria. Tom served in the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve during World War 2. Tom worked for over 30 years with IBM primarily in Office Product Sales. His nickname there was "Tommy Typewriter". Tom will be remembered as the ultimate handyman who had a shop filled with tools to envy. Tom served for over 10 years with Junior Achievement. There will be no service at Tom's request with cremation and final resting at Royal Oak Cemetery. No flowers please. If desired, please donate to the Lung Association of B.C. McMILLAN, Archibald William (Archie), RCNVR (26 Sep 1921 - 27 Feb 2014) - Archie passed away peacefully in his home with his family by his side. Predeceased by his loving wife Stella, sons Paul and Doug. Archie is lovingly remembered by his son David, and daughters Daphne (Tom), M.G. (Richard). Grandchildren: Chris (Shelley), Debbie (Tavis), Meghan (Craig), Ryan (Susi), Craig (Candice), Andrew, Will, Sarah (Jude), Haidee (Josh), Mathew, Diana (Ian), Marcus (Kathryn) and many great grandchildren; his sister Lo and sister in-law Mary, many nieces and nephews and his close friends from Bamfield. Archie was always a gentleman and an inspiration to his family and friends and will be deeply missed. Archie with his loving wife Stella by his side raised their five children in Port Alberni and Bamfield. Fun times were spent boating in the "STAR 5", hiking in the woods, picnicking at the beach and gardening at the cottage. Archie was raised in Port Alberni, served in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War and became a First Class Diver. Following the war he became a Master Mariner for Stone Brothers and Pacific Towing. A gathering with family and friends to honour Archie's life will take place at Brady's beach in late spring. MOORE, Dr. Brian Marshall - June 2, 1924 - February 28, 2014 We regret to announce the passing of Brian on February 28th in his 90th year. He is survived by his loving wife Evy of 65 years; his son Gerald; his grandson Laird; and his sister Sheila MacKay. He was predeceased by his son Laurie and his sister Kaye. Born in North Vancouver, Brian attended King George High School, then served in the Canadian Navy during WWII, and later graduated from the College of Optometry of Ontario. He practised Optometry for many years in Port Alberni, Victoria, Vancouver, and finally in Vernon. Brian and Evy enjoyed life in the Okanagan for 22 years before returning to the coast to be closer to family and made many new friends in Walnut Grove, Langley. Brian enjoyed many activities including tennis, golf, skating, skiing at Silver Star and ballroom and ice dancing with Evy. He was gregarious and outgoing, a friend to all who knew him. Special thanks to Dr. Tom Park and the nursing staff at Langely Memorial Hospital for their wonderful care and attention. STARK, Edwin Frederick (Ed), Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class Radioman, 27509-E, RCN / C.A.F. (Navy) / Lieutenant (N), C.A.F. (Navy) - Passed away suddenly Wednesday, November 6th, 2013. Born July 9, 1933 in Saskatoon, SK. Lovingly remembered by his wife of 58 years, Ruth G. Stark, sons Thomas (Joyce) and Dave (June). Ed served as an electronics technician for 25 years in the RCN. During Ed's career he served with distinction on numerous ships with five of those years in Toronto at defence research. After retiring from the Navy, he finished his career working 15 years at the dockyard. Ed will be missed by family, friends, neighbours and the Chief and PO's Association with whom he regularly volunteered. Predeceased by his sons, Michael and Stanley, Norm is survived by his loving wife, Hazel, daughter-in-law, Sherry, grandchildren Hayley, Brydon and Evan (Victoria) and grandsons, Teddy, Griff and Jonathan (Kelowna). Norm served in the Canadian Navy in WW2 and worked for Canada Post for many years after that. Loved by all, we will remember Norm for his kind and generous heart and his terrific sense of humour! TOUGH, William Alexander (Bill), RCNVR (06 Nov 1924 - 29 Nov 2013) passed away quietly after a lengthy illness in Courtenay, BC, where he had resided since 1988. He was predeceased by his son William Jr. in 2006 and leaves behind his wife Pat, sister Shirley Beasom, sons Rick, Michael (Christine) and daughter Kathy, step-son Glen Guman (Wendy) and step-daughter Gale Leech, along with 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Bill grew up in Penticton where he began his lengthy career with Shell Oil driving delivery trucks for his Dad (Alex) and worked alongside his future brother-in-law, Jim Beasom. He joined the Canadian Navy in 1942 and spent his time on Corvettes patrolling the North Pacific from Esquimalt to the Aleutians. A few years after the war ended, he married and moved to the Lower Mainland where he starting working at the Shellburn Oil Refinery in Burnaby, where he started out at the bottom and ended up running the place 25 years later as shift supervisor. He raised the family with his first wife Lillian in Surrey and then North Delta where he could often be found on days off mixing concrete by hand, building driveways, sidewalks and stone retaining walls. The annual family vacation included driving vacations from Vancouver Island to Calgary and from Kaslo to Barkerville. Perhaps the most inspiring was a two week Easter Holiday travelling to Tijuana, Mexico and back in two weeks with 4 kids in a 65 Ford Galaxie station wagon! At the ripe old age of 52 he retired from Shell with a full pension and re-married his childhood sweetheart, Patricia, in 1977. They lived a great life together in Lake Country in Ontario, and then moved to Courtenay where they resided in a beautiful home on the ocean. They travelled for many years visiting locations in Mexico, Hawaii, the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, Europe and all over Canada and the US. Bill and Pat took up boating and salmon fishing where they spent many days enjoying Georgia Straight on the boat they named "At Last". Bill was an avid reader and had many other interests through his retirement including gardening, woodworking, stained glass and playing the piano. HALL, Charles William - of Grand Greve, Cape Breton, passed away on February 7, 2012, in Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII. He is survived by sisters, Del Buchanan and Patricia Hall. Charles was a 26-year veteran of the Royal Canadian Navy. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Cruikshank's Halifax Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax. A memorial service will be held in St. Peter's, Cape Breton at a later date.

HAYES, Guilford Roscoe (Gilly), CPO1, RCN - 73, Cottage Cove, Annapolis Co., passed away Sunday, November 9, 2008, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Cottage Cove, he was a son of the late Guilford Reid and Thelma (Firth) Hayes. Guilford first went to school in Port George and later at Middleton Regional High School. At age 15 he started his career at sea on the SS Gypsum King. As a young man he also fished with his father, worked as a carpenters helper and cut pulpwood. He served with the Royal Canadian Navy from 1954-1964, serving on Her Majesty's Canadian Ships Quebec, Assiniboine, Iroquois and Bonaventure, retiring from the navy as a First Class Petty Officer. He then went on to careers of fishing the Bay of Fundy from his home in Cottage Cove and was employed as a stationary engineer at C.F.B. Greenwood as well as at Acadia Distillery, Bridgetown. Guilford was proud to be a charter member of the Atlantic Chief and Petty Officer's Association. Guilford will miss his family and friends, fishing, dancing, telling a joke and a story and his loyal dog Blackie. He is survived by his companion, Cecile Gue, Berwick; son, Guilford "Michael", Cottage Cove; daughters, Carolyn (Chris) Shaw, Ottawa; Nancy (Charles) Lynch, Lawrencetown; Cindy (Derek Michelin) Hayes, Churchill Falls, N.L.; also their mother, Marilyn Anne Jones (Musial), Cottage Cove; sister, Gladys Batchelor, Edmonton Alta.; brothers, William (Donna) Hayes and Jim (Giselle) Hayes, both of Nictaux; six grandchildren and two step grandchildren, Tyrel, Joseph, Shane, Dustin, Jolene, Keith, Joette and Jenelle. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brother-in-law Robert. A friend, father, grandfather and brother, Gil will be sorely missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him. HAMILTON, Robert Alexander - 80, of Dartmouth, died August 26, 2011, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Woodstock, Ont., he was the son of the late Lee and Emily (Hastings) Hamilton. Robert was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces (Navy) and retired after 30 years of service, having served at HMCS Stadacona, Shearwater, and Niobe (CDLS London, England), and in Bonaventure, Mic Mac, Annapolis, Assiniboine. After his retirement he continued working as Office Manager for Eagles and Radcliffe for a number of years. He enjoyed wood turning and was a member of the Nova Scotia Wood Turners Guild. He also served as an elder of Woodlawn United Church. Surviving are his loving wife, Mary 'Molly' (MacInnes); his daughter, Brenda (Graham) Oldreive; son, Mark; plus many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his infant son, Lee Alexander; his sister, Mona on August 2 (of Woodstock, Ont). Cremation has taken place. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Atlantic Funeral Home, Dartmouth. A celebration of life will be held in Woodlawn United Church on Saturday, September 10 at 2 p.m., Rev. HAWKINS, Gordon (Gordie), CPO, RCN/CAF (Navy) - age 86, of Cole Harbour, passed away October 15, 2013, peacefully at home with his loving family by his side. Born in New Liskeard, Ont., he was a son of the late Daisy Maude Hawkins-Pratlet and Herbert Hawkins. Gordie joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1947 and retired as Chief Petty Officer in 1974, then joined the Corps of Commissionaires as Captain from 1977 to 1989 employed at Halifax City Hall as Sargeant at Arms under three Mayors. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and also a member of the Atlantic Chief and Petty Officer Association. He enjoyed family first, our special gatherings and occasions. He was an avid sports fan (Toronto) all the way. He enjoyed, gardening, fishing, hunting, and darts. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Gordie is survived by his wife, Shirley (Doucette) Hawkins; daughter, Cheryll Hebb (Robert), Berwick; Joyce Hawkins, Dartmouth; sons, Gary Hawkins (Kathy), Dartmouth; Jim Hawkins (Belva), Halifax; sisters, Edna Sargent, Newfoundland and June Boddington, Ontario; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Lilwin 'Winnie' Morris, Evelyn Linton, Nora White; brothers, Alf Hawkins and Joe Hawkins. HIMSL, Francis (Frank), LCdr, RCN - Halifax, passed away December 4, 2007, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII, in his 85th year. Born in Bethune, Sask., on December 14, 1922, he was the son of the late, Alfred J. and Teresa (Fuchs) Himsl. Frank enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces (Navy) in March 1942, and served continuously until November 1972. He began at the basic trade of Stoker and, on retirement, had advanced to the profession of Communications and Electronics Engineer. His promotions in rank correspond with his professional advancement; he progressed steadily from the rank of 2nd Class Stoker to that of Lieutenant Commander. After retirement, Frank was on the staff at Dartmouth Vocational School, and later taught four sessions of English as a second language in Eastern Europe. Frank had many talents and many interests, including reading, history, politics, music, mathematics, science and languages. He enjoyed activities such as; cycling, birdwatching, skating, fitness, metal work, wood working and doing the daily crossword and cryptoquote. He was for many years a member of the Nova Scotia Bird Society. He enjoyed much travel, including camping, touring and attending language schools. He had a 60 year commitment to fitness at the Stadacona Gymnasium. He volunteered at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia where he was a life member and, for the last 10 years, has been a weekly volunteer guide at the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Frank is survived by his wife, Mary M. (MacLeod-Thomson) Himsl; sons, Frank, William, Paul, and Edward; stepson, Bruce Thomson and families; daughter, Clara and family; brothers, Alfred, Roman, and Ralph; sisters, Leona and Avona. He was predeceased by sisters, Clara, Iola and Gisela. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax. VIK, Astrid Gertrude (Trudy), CD, Cdr, RCN - Passed away peacefully at the age of 83 on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII, after a brave and determined battle with cancer. Trudy was born in Kandahar, Sask., the youngest daughter of the late Gustav and Signe Vik. She completed nurse's training in 1956 at the Children's Hospital in Winnipeg where she was the recipient of the Best Bedside Nurse award. In 1960 she enrolled in the RCN as a nursing sister where she practiced her considerable nursing and management skills at military locations across Canada and in Germany. She loved nursing and enriched the lives of many younger nurses who had the benefit of her mentorship. Following her retirement as the Head of Nursing at CFB Halifax in 1989 she took up employment with the Registered Nurses Association of Nova Scotia. Recognizing the value of education, Trudy graduated from Dalhousie University with Bachelor and Master of Nursing degrees and followed this up with a Master of Health Services Administration. She was an avid sports enthusiast with a keen interest in curling and an underlying passion for Sidney Crosby and the Penguins, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Montreal Expos. Only recently her illness forced her to forgo her daily gym classes at Mount St. Vincent where she enjoyed the close friendship of her classmates. Active in the community Trudy volunteered many hours at the food bank and the VON. The last of her siblings, she was predeceased by two brothers and six sisters. She is survived by nephew, Lorne (Joan), Lyndon (Ester) and niece, Wendy; and several other nieces, nephews. Trudy will be especially missed by her lifelong nursing sister friends in Ontario and other special friends in Halifax. The family wishes to offer thanks to Dr. Daniel Rayson, Dr. Bradley Ball and Dr. Sarah Mac-Swain for their wonderful care and compassion. An extended special thank you to the nurses on Floor 8.3 at the Halifax Infirmary for their outstanding care. Cremation has taken place and in keeping with her wishes, a private inurnment will take place at a later date in the Veterans Columbarium located in Fairview Lawn Cemetery, Halifax. MARSDEN, Elizabeth Carol (nee Plummer), RCN (09 Jun 1947 - 18 Dec 2012)  Peacefully at the Thessalon Hospital on Tuesday, December 18, 2012. Betty Marsden of Bruce Mines passed away at the age of 65. Beloved Wife of Ernie Marsden, Dear Mother of Ernie JR, and Sylvia. Grandmother of Jade and Jasmine. Survived by her mother Margaret Plummer and Brothers Glen and David. A Memorial Service will be held on January 9, 2013 at the Beggs Funeral Home Thessalon at 1 PM. Donations to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 211 Bruce Mines gratefully accepted. Betty joined the Royal Canadian Navy on 28 September 1966. She took her training in HMCS Cornwallis and HMCS Stadacona where she was an Operations Plotter at Maritime Warfare School. She was released on 24 January 1973 from the RCN. She served at the Maritime Warfare School in Stadacona.

JONES, Heather Ann (25 Apr 1959 - 17 May 2013) - On May 17th Heather lost her brave and spirited fight against lung cancer. Diagnosed in April 2012, Heather never complained or indulged in self pity, she just got on with the fight against this disease. For all those who knew Heather, take comfort in the fact that her final days were made as comfortable as possible by the dedicated staff at the 7A ward of the Palliative Care Unit of the VG Site, QEII. She had her husband and family at her side. She is survived by her husband of 25 years, Gordon; father, Gordon and mother, Gertrude; her brothers, Sidney (Lavenia), Danny (Judy); her sisters, Katherine (Gordon) and Tracy. She leaves behind nieces and nephews, Daniel, Courtney, Braden, Brianna, and `her boys, Andrew and Patrick in addition to numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Heather served her country from January 1977 to April 1999 as a Sup Tech in the Canadian Armed Forces. She attained the rank of MWO and garnered four medals along the way. She never refused a posting or a tasking no matter how difficult or trying. Her varied career took her from Alert in the high Arctic to Recruit Training Instructor at Cornwallis to a sea-going posting onboard HMCS Preserver and a term at the Submarine Squadron. Although she wore the Air Force blue she served in all three elements and was highly regarded by superiors and subordinates alike regardless of the element she was in. She was a true professional who did the uniform proud. She first met her husband in 1978 but it took him until 1987 to realize what a treasure she was and married her. Heather, you gave this Diver the happiest times of his life. You never questioned any of my decisions but stood behind me and supported me all the way. I am going to miss your counsel. It will be hard to carry on without you but I will because I know that is what you wanted. It speaks volumes about you that as sick as you were, you wanted other people to watch out for me. Right until the end you worried more about others than about yourself, but that was always your way. I know you are in a better place and without pain now so for that I am thankful. Take care Honey, I'll see you again. HMCS PRESERVER

KING, Baxter, CPO1, RCN - 79, Meaghers Grant. Born in Bauline N.L., passed away Thursday, November 11, 2010, in Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital. With great sadness and profound sorrow Baxter passed away after a long and courageous battle with many illnesses surrounded by his loving wife, children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife and soul-mate of 55 years, Jean (Munro); sons, Wayne (Delilah) and their children, Amy and Ian (Sarah); Timothy and his son, Bryan; Kevin and his sons, Chad and Tyler; daughters, Susan (Alf) LeGrow and their children, Michael and Wendy (Dean); Kathy (Jim) Alexander and their children, Jonathan and Melanie (Gerry); and Vicki (Darcey) McBain and their children, Adam, Justin and Leah (Vicki, his youngest daughter and his personal care giver and nurse during his illness); his great-grandchildren, Tobie, Keegan, Brooke and Paige, and the much anticipated arrival of another grandchild; his brothers, Herbert, John, and his sisters, Ethel, Irene, Marie and Gertie. He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Mary; parents, William and Flora (Snow); brothers, Clarence and Stanley, sisters, Phillis and Vera. Baxter served in the Canadian Navy from 1949 to 1975 and was a veteran of the Korean War. After retiring from the Navy he worked for Canada Post in Halifax before being transferred to St. John's. Eventually he went to work on the oil rigs off Newfoundland and was the radio operator on duty onboard SEDCO 706 and took the mayday from the Ocean Ranger. While in St. John's he was the Coxswain at the Naval Reserve Unit, HMCS Cabot. Eventually he returned to Nova Scotia, settling in Meaghers Grant. He resumed his connection with the local military veterans at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 161. His family sees it most fitting that he passed away on Re-membrance Day. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Rowlings Funeral Home, Musquodobit Harbour. A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 15 at 2 p.m., in St. James United Church, Meaghers Grant, Rev. Joan Griffen officiating. Family flowers only. Donations in his memory may be made to St. James United Church or Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital. HMCS CABOT

LOWDEN, Ronald (Lofty), CPO1, RCN - 81, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2008, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Springhill, Ron was the son of William and Louisa Lowden. Ron was predeceased by his brothers, Harry, Kenneth and Eric; first wife, Muroye (MacMaster, 1947) and his wife of 57 years, Betty (Miller, 2008). He is survived by son, Michael; daughters, Patricia King, Patty Moore and Maureen Jeffries; grandchildren, Johnathon, Christian, Ben, Emily and Megan, and great-granddaughter, Emma. Ron joined the Royal Canadian Navy Voluntary Reserve immediately following graduation from Springhill High School, served at sea during the Second World War and continued his distinguished naval engineering career until 1969. He maintained an ongoing interest in the navy, naval affairs and military history. An avid outdoorsman and jack-of-all-trades, Ron was most enthusiastic about boating, hunting, fishing and archery. He was, at various stages, a curler, golfer, carpenter and piper. He was a past president of the Dartmouth Lions Club. Ron always loved to be planning a fishing or hunting trip, working on a project at his home, or the cottage at Porter's Lake or volunteering in a local community event. The family would like to thank the staff at the Department of Veterans' Affairs, DGH and Always Home Services for their professional compassionate contributions to Ron's care. MacDONALD, John Albert - 88, Stewiacke, formerly of Dartmouth and Round Hill, passed away on Sunday, October 7, 2012, in Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII. John Senior was a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Born May 6, 1924, in Murray Harbour, P.E.I., he was the eldest son of the late William MacDonald and the late Adelaide (MacLeod) Mac-Donald. John joined the RCN during the Second World War when he was 17, and worked in the Naval Armament Depot and Halifax Dockyard. After the war he lived in Dartmouth until his retirement, then moved to Round Hill and then Stewiacke. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was from a long line of carpenters and boat builders being very skilled at both. Many of us knew him as a jack of all trades, and for his skill at gun-smithing. He is survived by sister, Betty Mellish, Montague, P.E.I.; cousin, Betty Campbell, Cornwall, P.E.I.; son, John (Heather); daughter, Judith (Douglas) Pitcairn; son, David (Gwen); grandson, Paul (Melanie) Yuille; great-grandson, Owen Yuille; stepdaughters, Carol Roy and Gloria Goulet. He was predeceased by his dearest wife, Carrie Goulet (Cormier); brother, Murray; stepson, Ronnie Goulet. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. in Ettinger Funeral Home in Subenacadie. KEHOE, John B. (Jack) - Passed away on February 7, 2012, in Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII. He was born in 1931, spent 10 years in the Navy and 25 years in real estate. In retirement, Jack enjoyed breeding and raising Herefords as a hobby. He is survived by his wife, Emma (Scanlan); children, Cathy (Bob), John (Donna), Robert (Janice), and Beth (Costa); grandchildren, Lindsay, Emma-Anne and Matheas; and sister, Doris (Sam) McClure. MacDEVITT, Hugh Joseph, CPO, RCNVR - Passed away at the age of 87 on January 3, 2011, after a long battle with stomach cancer in Los Angeles, Calif. His son, Donald MacDevitt, will bring his Dad's cremated remains back to Canada for the funeral and burial with his wife in Fairview Lawn Cemetery in Halifax. Both Hugh and Donald were born in Montreal. Hugh's older brother, Joseph MacDevitt, served Canada as a Detective Lieutenant in the Quebec Providential Police Force and later rose to become the 'Chief of Detectives' for the Montreal City Police Department. Also, a cousin, Kenneth Ross, served Canada for many years in the 'Royal Canadian Mounted Police' in Ottawa. As a young lad at the tender age of 17, Hugh joined the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve (RCNVR) and served Canada from January 1940 until he left the service in 1946. He saw Naval Combat Service in Flower Class Corvettes and Fleet Class Destroyers in the Battle of the Atlantic, the Arctic (escorting convoys to Murmansk, Russia), Normandy Invasion (escorting the first minesweepers as part of the invasion spearhead and naval bombardment support just two miles offshore during the D-Day landings), North Africa, and the Mediterranean Sea. Before the war in Europe came to a close, Hugh had achieved the rank of 'Chief Petty Officer'. But then war in Europe ended, and his ship, HMCS Sioux, was transferred back to Canada to be fitted out for tropical wartime duty in the Pacific. However, the United States dropped the two atomic bombs on Japan and the Second World War ended. Hugh left the RCN in 1946. For his service he received many medals from the Canadian, British, and Russian governments. They were as follows: the 1939-1945 Star, Atlantic Star with White Rose (for valour during the Battle of the Atlantic), Africa Star, King George V Medal, Canadian Volunteer Medal 1939-1945, Arctic Medal, Normandy Medal and two Russian commemorative medals that were presented by the Russian Gov-ernment (after the fall of the USSR) to honour the men who served in the Royal Canadian Navy, escorting convoys to Murmansk, Russia from Scotland. After the Second World War ended Hugh went to work in Halifax in sales for Stairs Son & Morrow importing and exporting small and heavy machinery. He joined the Halifax Junior Board of Trade, Halifax Curling Club, Halifax Gun Club and Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron. Also, since his family lived outside the city of Halifax he helped start the First Spryfield Volunteer Fire Department. He continued in sales with the Enamel and Heating Company selling faucet stoves and furnaces while traveling the province of Nova Scotia. He did quite well and rose to become the Nova Scotia District Branch Manager for the Enamel and Heating Company located in Halifax. But in 1964 because of his wife's health, the family had to move to Los Angeles, Calif. There Hugh went to work as a Sales and Design Engineer for La Brea Heating & Air Conditioning Company. Hugh J. MacDevitt is survived by his only son, Donald, who lives in Los Angeles. A memorial service in Hugh's honour will be held Saturday, June 25 at 10 a.m. in The Presbyterian Church of St David, 1537 Brunswick St., Halifax. Rev. Kenn Stright officiating. HMCS SIOUX - Served in Sioux during the Second World War

McCLURE, Patrick John, Capt, RCN (12 Nov 1932 - 23 Feb 2013) - Passed away in Abbotsford Memorial Hospital. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy for 37 years, retiring in Renfrew, Ont., before moving to Abbotsford, B.C. in 2008. Pat was a Past President of the Renfrew Royal Canadian Legion and a member of Renfrew and Bytown Masonic Lodges. He is survived by his wife, Joan, Abbotsford; daughter, Wendy (Alan) Lemont, Vancouver; brother, Daniel, Chalk River, Ont.; several nephews and nieces. Predeceased by brother, William and sisters, Elizabeth and Colleen. A man of great humor, integrity and wisdom, he was the best of men, respected by all who knew him, and adored by his family. Cremation has taken place. No service by request.

MORGAN, Edward James (1933-2008) - Passed away on July 1, 2008, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII, surrounded by family and friends. Born in Belfast, Ireland, he immigrated to Canada in 1949. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1953, where he proudly served his adopted country for 30 years. He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Gertrude Patricia (Penney); parents, James Patrick and Mary Thersea (Montgonmery) Cunningham brothers, William, Francis, and Patrick; sister, Mary, and grandson, Joseph Edward William. He is survived by his daughters, Mary (Glynn) Harrison, Patricia; sons, Frederick, Dan, and William (Tara); sisters, Winnifred (Don) Morey and Kathleen Turner; grandchildren, Becky (Mike), Wayne (Bethany), John (Lynn), Catherine, Todd, Joey, Connie and Kayla; great-granddaughters, Lily and Sophie. He will be fondly remembered for his passion for golf and darts, in which he won many trophies with his dart partner, Donnie Tinslay, his love of life and his great sense of humour. His greatest joy were his grandchildren and great-granddaughters. He will be sadly missed by everyone including his golfing buddies and close friends, Alice, Harry and Roger. He was a true gentleman. The funeral will be held on July 4 at 2 p.m. in St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Courtney Street, Dartmouth.

MAXWELL, Vincent John - 84, of Coldbrook, Kings Co., passed away on Saturday, April 27, 2013. Born on February 19, 1929, in Upper Sackville, he was a son of the late William G. and Harriet V. (Swallow) Maxwell. He received his early education at Maxwell School and after serving 25 years in the RCN, he retired with the rank of Petty Officer First Class. He was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration, Canadian Centennial Medal and NATO Special Service Medal. Following retirement he lived and worked in the Bridgetown area for several years before moving to Coldbrook. He was a member of Scotia Lodge No. 20, a member of Philae Temple Shrine in Halifax and Eastern Valley Shrine Club, a member and Past Patron of Evangeline No. 15, Order of Eastern Star, a member of Orchard Valley United Church, a former member of the Senior Men's Club of Glooscap Curling Club and a volunteer at Valley Regional Hospital Gift Shop. He is sur-vived by his wife, the former Irma Rafuse; stepdaughter, Sherry (David) Jennison, Canaan; stepson, Kirk (Bonnie Daye) MacKenzie, Eastern Passage; sisters, Dorothy Chase, St. Croix; Mary Little, Middleton, and Claire MacFarlane, Hammonds Plains. He was predeceased by brothers, Kenneth and Neil; sister, Evelyn MacLeod; stepson, Bruce MacKenzie. Cremation has taken place. McLEOD, John Alexander - 63, of Kentville, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, October 5, 2011, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born and raised in Pembroke, Ont., he was a son of the late Donald and Doris (Rankin) McLeod. John served in the Royal Canadian Navy, retiring after 26 years. He was then employed as a motor coach operator with Nova Tours, Acadian Lines and Kings Transit. He was also employed with Kent Building Supplies and more recently in the Accommodations Unit of Camp Alder-shot. John loved being a Grampie. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed time at the cottage, playing cards, and driving his motorcycle. He was an active member of Bethany Memorial Baptist Church. He loved to sing and was a member of the Dukes of Kent Barbershop Harmony Society and the church choir. BLACK, Alan - age 93, Oxford, passed away Friday, March 31, 2017 in East Cumberland Lodge, Pugwash. Born in Methil, Scotland he was a son of the late Alan and Barbara (Watt) Black. Alan volunteered and joined Royal Canadian Navy at the age of 17. He was a veteran of the Second World War, having served on many vessels including the HMCS Buckingham. Upon returning he worked at the Cobequid Lumber Company for many years. He was a founding member of the Oxford Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, having served the congregation for over 65 years. Alan loved the outdoors, whether hunting, trapping, fly fishing or gardening, he loved being outside in nature. Alan is survived by his wife of 70 years, the former Irene Falconer; son, Bruce and daughter, Wendy Black; granddaughters, Tammy (Alan) Dupuis and Jamie (Reginald) Robinson; great-grandchildren, Kelsie Black, Kristin Dupuis, Rylle, Leaham and Regan Robinson; brothers, Bill, Eric, James 'Tudor' (Irene); sister, Jeanne MacDonald; sister-in-law, Delilah Black; several nieces and nephews. MORSE, Paul K. - age 91, of Parrsboro, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 29, 2014, in Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Upper Nappan. Born in Parrsboro, he was a son of the late Horace and Annie (Merriam) Morse. Paul served during the Second World War with the Merchant Navy and with the Royal Canadian Navy. He later operated a small business in Parrsboro before moving to New Jersey, where he worked in the food industry for more than 25 years. Following his retirement, he returned with the 'love of his life', Rhoda, to his hometown. He was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 45, Parrsboro. Paul was the recipient of many accolades from his beloved town of Parrsboro, recognizing him for his tremendous support for local community groups. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Rhoda Milberry; sister, Margaret (Morse) (Currie) Beutel in 2010, and brother, Gerald in 2008. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 7, in St. George's Anglican Cemetery, Parrsboro. Reception to follow in St. George's Anglican Church Hall. O'BRIEN, Edward Dominic - Passed away on March 15th, 2012. Born 1929 in Montreal, Ed was the son of Lawrence and Mary Ann (Harvey) and was predeceased by his sister, Patricia in 2005. Ed is survived by his beloved wife, Rita; children, Patricia (Patrick), Larry (Anne Louise) and John (Sheilagh); grandchildren, Kathleen, Connor, Maria, Anna and Keira brought much joy to his life and will miss Grandpa. Ed served in the Royal Canadian Navy for 25 years, was an active member of St. Thomas More Parish for over 40 years in addition to many volunteer roles. MUMFORD, Donald Paul - The death of Donald Paul Mumford of Sprucewoods, MB, occurred suddenly in Brandon on Wednesday, November 12, 2003. Don was born in Halifax on January 19, 1948. Don attended St. Andrews School until he reached the age of 15 years. He lost his father at age 11 and became the man of the house until joining the Royal Canadian Navy in 1965. Don took numerous cooking courses with the military. He was a cook with the Canadian Armed Forces from 1965 until 1992. He was then employed with Nestle-Midwest Foods from 1996 until 1999. Don volunteered at Fairview Home, preparing pancake breakfasts, dinners and barbeques. His interests included, cooking, fishing, woodworking, enjoying Wheat King Hockey and was also a movie buff. He received a coaching certificate for hockey. Don is survived by his son, Don (Jodi-Lynn) Mumford, and his partner Jennifer Fiumara. He also leaves sisters, Sheila (Bobby) McLeod, Jean Payne and Valerie Mumford (Terry); nieces and nephews; Bobby, Kelly, Tracy, Jodi, Mandy, Tony, Neil and their children. Don was predeceased by his mother, Eileen Collings (nee Samuels); father, Ernest Mumford and his wife Mary Therese Mumford (nee Dobbin). OLAND, Bruce Sidney Culverwell, (CM, CStJ, ED, CD, KM, KCLJ, GOMLJ, DCnL, DComm, RCNR - of Halifax, died on Thursday morning, August 6, 2009, following a brief illness. Born March 31, 1918, in Guildford, England to the late Colonel Sidney C. and Herlinda (deBedia) Oland, he received his early education at Kings College School in Windsor, NS and later attended Beaumont College, Old Windsor, Berkshire, England. Following graduation from Beaumont College he joined the family's brewing company which had its early beginnings in Nova Scotia in 1867, becoming President of Oland & Son Ltd. in 1964 and President of Oland Breweries Ltd. in 1971. At the time of his death, he was involved in a number of business ventures as President of Lindwood Holdings Ltd., Culverwell Holdings Ltd. and Oland Investments Ltd. He had been Honorary Consul General of Japan at Halifax and a former Member and Chair of the Board of Governors, Nova Scotia Division Canadian Corps of Commissionaires. Mr Oland has had a lifelong interest in the Canadian Armed Forces and was actively involved in the Militia and the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve from 1933 to 1971. He started his service career as an Officer Training Cadet in England in 1933, receiving a commission in the Canadian Army, Active Militia, in 1937. At the outbreak of hostilities in 1939, he was promoted to Captain and served with the Royal Canadian Artillery during the entirety of the Second World War. He remained with the Militia following the Second World War, being promoted to Major and awarded the Canadian Efficiency Decoration in 1950. In 1951 he transferred from the Militia to the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve and was granted acting rank of Lieutenant at HMCS Scotian. Between 1951 and 1956 he earned his RCN Watchkeeping Certificate, the Canadian Forces Decoration in 1958, and was promoted to Lieutenant Commander and appointed Executive Officer of HMCS Scotian in 1960. He became the Commanding Officer of HMCS Scotian with the rank of Commander in 1963 and was promoted to Captain in 1966. In 1967 he was appointed ADC to His Excellency Governor-General Roland Michener, promoted to Commodore and appointed as Senior Naval Reserve Advisor. In 1970 Commodore Oland was appointed the Naval Reserve Advisor to the Commander, Maritime Command. Mr. Oland had been very active in a number of charitable and community activities and was a strong supporter of Regional Residential Services Society. Over the years he served through the Royal Canadian Naval Benevolent Fund Eastern Claims Division, The Board of Honourary Governors Nova Scotia Division, Canadian Association for the Retarded, the Bill Lynch Memorial Fund, The Nova Scotia Board of Directors of the National Council of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Programme in Canada; a Director of the Canadian Association for the Mentally Retarded (National Committee), Last Post Fund; charter member Maritime Branch of the Canadian Naval Memorial Trust; President, St George's Society, The Royal United Services Institute, The Halifax School for the Blind; and Governor of the Dominion Brewers Association. Other organizations of which Mr. Oland has been a supporter and/or member are Nova Scotia Naval Officers Association, Navy League of Canada, Nova Scotia Defence Association Network, DANN, St. John Ambulance and Patron of HMCS Haida. He exhibited a wide range of interests from flying, boating, swimming and golfing to the competition of squash as well as being a numismatist and philatelist with memberships in their associations. He was the Captain of the Canadian Team competing in the International Tuna Cup Competition in 1971, the only year that Canada won the Sharp Cup. Scholarships in Commodore Oland's name have been given to Dalhousie University, St Francis Xavier University, Saint Mary's University, University of King's College, and Kings-Edgehill School, Windsor. A bequest is also directed to Dalhousie University on behalf of the Atlantic Research Centre, Faculty of Medicine. In 1985 he was granted the honourary degree of Doctor of Canon Law by the University of King's College in recognition of his services to the community and received an honourary degree in 2000 from Saint Mary's University, Doctor of Commerce. In December of 2005 he was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada and on October 6, 2006, was invested into the Order of Canada. He was a life member of the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron and The Halifax Club. In 1987 he became a Knight of Malta. He is survived by his wife, the former Ruth Hurley; a daughter, Deborah Ruth; son, Richard H., daughter-in-law Barbara, grandsons, Keith and Eric and granddaughter Heather. He was predeceased by brothers, Victor deBedia and Don Jaimie, his twin sister, Amadita Diana, and an infant son, Keith. Visitation will be held on Monday, August 10 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in J. A. OVERY, Herbert William (Bert), CPO, RCN - 83, of Ottawa, Ont., passed away at his home on February 12, 2010. He was born April 12, 1926, in Toronto, Ont., the son of the late Rose Ballard and James Overy. Siblings include Jim, Kathleen, Marilyn (Joe Arsenault), Jean (Ken Lemon), Bill, and Frank. He married Leah Mable Venman on May 7, 1951, in Bowmanville, Ont., and is survived by his children, Judy, Leah, Ellen, Jim, Jeanie, and Susan. Grandpa will be sadly missed by his grandchildren, Jamie, Shelly, Alexa, Kayla, Jeffrey, Stephanie, Krista, and Bryna Rose; four great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. Bert served with distinction in all three forces, land, sea and air. He served in the Canadian Military during the Second World War. Early in the Korean Conflict, he re-enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy, in the electrical trade, rising through the ranks to Chief Petty Officer. He spent several years working with the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets for which he was commended. As Petty Officer First Class he had the honour of marching shoulder-to-shoulder with four Admirals in the funeral procession for Admiral Rayner. After nearly 30 years service he retired in 1978. Mr. Overy was a member of Atlantic Chiefs and Petty Officers Association and the Royal Canadian Legion. Herbert describes his greatest accomplishments as being his love shared with his parents, brothers and sisters, the ability to raise six children, and provide love and guidance to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He described his life as being, "very happy" and attributes his happiness to having many loving close family members and friends. Cremation has taken place. Friends may gather with the family from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, February 20, in Kelly Funeral Home, 1255 Walkley Rd., Ottawa, Ont., followed by the memorial service in the chapel at 12:30 p.m.

SAXTON, Joseph Patrick (11 Mar 1926 - 27 Dec 2010) - 84, Truro. It is with profound sadness the Saxton family announces the sudden death of their beloved father, Joseph, at the Colchester Hospital on December 27, 2010. Born in Halifax, Joe was the son of the late Joseph and Annie (Campbell) Saxton. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, John; sister, Theresa; wife, Mary Jean (Surrette) and infant son, Shawn. He leaves behind sons, Michael (Kathryn), Truro; Patrick (Linda), Oxford; Terrance (Doris), Tatamagouche; Shaun (Karen), Squamish; Timothy (Elizabeth), Truro; Kevin (Kim), Barrie; daughters, Catherine (Dave), Squamish; Mary (Greg), Squamish; Jennifer (Don), Brandon; 29 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and another on the way; brothers, Gerald (Helena), Donald (Betty), Purcell’s Cove; many nieces and nephews. Joe served as a gunner with the Royal Canadian navy during WWII. Following that he began a long fire-fighting career, starting in Halifax in 1946 and ending as Deputy Chief, CFB Halifax in 1989. Throughout the years, he worked tirelessly in the Legion, organizing flea markets in support of the Burn Unit at the IWK, starting and running the yearly Poppy Campaign in Truro and chairing committees too numerous to mention. Despite all of this, he still found time to organize and coach minor baseball. His devotion and pride in his family is evidenced by an insertion in his resume that reads “certificate for outstanding Grandpa, presented by Grandkids on Father’s Day 1995”. He will be deeply missed by his family. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Joe’s family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m., Thursday, December 30, 2010. DANDENO, Thomas Frederick (Tom), OMM, CD - It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our father, Tom, on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at the age of 87 years. He was predeceased by the love of his life, Irene, in 1990. Tom was born in Galt, Ontario, and grew up in the Kitchener Waterloo area. Upon completing his schooling at the Guelph Collegiate, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy on July 15, 1948; he then transferred to the RCAF in 1951. He served first as a radio officer and then as a navigator. He married Irene Scott in Toronto on September 26, 1953. They saw various postings across Canada, their last one, in 1970, to CFB Comox. Tom served his country as a member of the ICCS Peacekeeping Corps in Vietnam in 1973. Following his retirement from the RCAF, Tom served as CADMO at HMCS Quadra Sea Cadet Camp for 19 years. In 1991 he was awarded the Order of Military Merit by the Governor General of Canada in Ottawa. In 1959 while serving on 405 Squadron based out of CFB Greenwood Nova Scotia he and his crew flew from Barbers Point, Hawaii to North Bay, Ontario in 20 hours and 10 minutes breaking an existing speed and range record that was commemorated on a Canadian postage stamp on September 4, 1999. In 1975 while serving on 407 Squadron at CFB Comox he and his crew flew for over 30 hours without refueling to set an endurance record. He served on the Board of Directors of the Comox District Credit Union and the Comox Valley Credit Union for over 15 years, including 6 years on the BC Central Credit Union Board of Directors. He served for many years on the St John the Baptist Parish Council, the d'Esterre Seniors Housing Society and the Comox Legion Board of Directors. Due to his many years of service to the Legion, Tom was awarded a life membership. Tom will be lovingly remembered by his children: Alison (Frank), Paul (Rosalind), and Laurel; 4 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. EDWARDS, Ralph William, Capt, RCN (served 23 Sep 1939 - 31 Jan 1972 - CFR 1943) (13 Mar 1919 - 09 Apr 2017) - passed away in his 99th year. Survived by his much loved wife of 73 years, Patricia, (nee Campbell), sons Ronald, Douglas and Brian, 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Ralph joined the Royal Canadian Navy in September 1939, retiring in 1972. During WW 11 he was principally at sea which included service the English Channel, the North Sea and troop evacuation from Northern France in the spring of 1940. An extended period of North Atlantic convoy duty followed. Peacetime service at sea was in aircraft carriers, cruisers and destroyers, including HMCS Haida in Korean waters. Shore appointments were inc HMC Dockyards, Naval Headquarters in Technical and Personnel Branches and Training Command Headquarters in Winnipeg. Following cremation the remains will rest in the family plot, Ross Bay Cemetery, Victoria. There will be no service. (Ottawa Citizen 11 Apr 2017)

PERDUE, Joseph Henry (Joe) - left us peacefully, surrounded by family, on April 6, 2017 at the age of 96. He leaves behind his loving wife Teresa, his cornerstone for 65 years, and his beloved children Catherine (Ron), Brian (Kimberley), Julie (Claudio), Dan (Rita) and Colleen (Steve), along with grandchildren Kelly (Ian), Cory, Nicholas, Dylan, Matthew, Brandon, Avalon, Alison, Zachary and great-granddaughter Esmé. Born in New Westminster, BC in 1921, Joe enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy and served on many ships including HMCS Saguenay. Though a torpedo attack in the North Atlantic left him with severe burns, nothing could hold him back. He returned to his ship and served until the end of WWII. With a passion for learning he studied engineering at the University of British Columbia, where he made many lifelong friends. He met Teresa in 1951 while working in South Slocan, BC and after graduation the couple moved to Toronto. Joe worked for Ontario Hydro and retired from the Canadian Standards Association at 68. Genuine and kind, his enthusiasm and positive outlook touched everyone he met. Joe valued education and believed learning should be a lifelong pursuit. In his memory, the Joseph Perdue Memorial Fund has been established at UBC's Faculty of Applied Sciences to support students in the Engineering program. (served Aug 1950 - Jan 1972) (17 Oct 1932 - 27 Mar 2017) - Born in Selkirk, Manitoba to (late) Evelyn and Willian Hendry, he was predeceased by his loving wife Audrey, just 11 months ago. He was also predeceased by his brothers Bill, Russell and Don. Dad joined the Navy in 1950. After serving in Korea he returned to Selkirk where he and Mom were married. He re-enlisted in 1955 and was drafted to Victoria. He and Mom were residents of Esquimalt since that time. Dad served with the RCN for 21 years. These years were often reflected with interesting stories. After retiring from military life Ian went on to be Food Service Manager at Glendale Lodge / Tillicum Lodge and Oak Bay Lodge. He is survived by his children Kim (Ed), Bruce (Pina) and Shawn, 7 grandchildren (Sherri, Brandi, Brent, Kaitlyn, Angelina, Morgan and Shellsea) and 8 great grandchildren (Avari, Chase, Cole, Karley, Codi, Brianna, Brody and Blake). BIRCHALL, Kenneth Gorman (03 Nov 1940 - 13 Apr 2017) - With sadness the Birchall Family announces the passing of Ken. Survived by his wife Patricia, sons Ken, Michael, Jeffrey, Traevor, Robert and James; and Colleen Saunders. Treasured out-law to the Klassen, White and Clegg families. He will be missed by his twin Walter (Frances), Joan (Richard), Elaine (Michael) and Nancy (Art). Uncle to many nieces and nephews, and cousin to the O'Brien, Shepard and Birchall families. Kenny served in the Royal Canadian Navy, then became the owner of Birchall Insurance Company for 25 years. He dedicated a lifetime to community service, including the Ottawa Kiwanis, Sage Club, National Crime Stoppers, Shepherds of Good Hope, PQ Community Health Centre, and Whitehaven Community Association. Ken had a great interest in music starting with rock 'n roll at Saint Mary's. He was known for his sense of humour, kindness and enjoyed making connections for others. CHORLTON, Ronald (13 Apr 1925 - 27 Mar 2017) - Good spirited and happy to the end, Ron Chorlton passed away peacefully at home at Mont-Tremblant with his beloved wife and best friend Dixi Lambert by his side. Pre-deceased by his first wife, Mary, his grandson, Scott, brother Doug (Barbara), and nieces Elizabeth and Beverly (Eric). Loving father of Lesley, Michael (Sandy), Bruce (Sue), and Jennifer (Anders). Ron will also be missed by grandchildren Megan (Fred), Gillian (Matt), Emma, Bronwyn, Oliver, William, and John. He was delighted at the arrival of great-grandchildren Scott, Theo, Molly, and Abby. He will be remembered by his cousin David Liddell (Elizabeth), his brother-in-law Goulding Lambert (Elizabeth), sisters-in-law Jennifer Housden (Geoffrey), Helen Webber, and Barbara Chorlton, and nieces Josephine, Diana, Heather, Dale, Sue, and Margaret. Ron came to Canada in 1927, and grew up in Britannia Beach B.C. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy and served during the Second World War in the Battle of the North Atlantic. After graduating from the University of British Columbia, he joined the federal government as a forestry engineer for the Department of Northern Affairs and Northern Administration. In 1953, Ron joined Watson Jack and Co, a company soon acquired by B. J. Coghlin Co. Ltd. that grew to become Wajax Equipment Limited. After serving individual members of the Wajax group as president, treasurer, and director in the 1960s and 70s, Ron became chairman and chief executive officer of Wajax Limited and its subsidiaries from 1980-1991. Ron loved to sail, and was a member of the Britannia Yacht Club, Ottawa, in the 1950s, and subsequently the Royal St. Lawrence Yacht Club, Dorval, QC. He skied almost every weekend with his family at Mont Tremblant from 1970-2000. Sailing and skiing were his "social media", the underpinnings of many lifelong friendships. He and Dixi enjoyed traveling the world and exploring the arts together over the last decades. His love and devotion as a husband and father will be remembered for a long time. He often spoke of the formative influences of his mother Minerva "Minnie" Chorlton, and Mrs Mary Gibbs Browning who took him in after he lost both his parents in his teens. Sincere thanks are extended to the Laurentian Care caregivers (Christina, Lynn, Mavis, Barbara, and Liz) and the personal care and medical support workers of the Mont Tremblant Centres Locaux de Services Communautaires (CLSC), who enabled Ron to live his last years at home. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Beechwood Cemetery, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa, on June 18 at 1 pm, followed by a reception. SCHAUMBURG Henry William Capt (N) (21 Oct 1938 - 09 Apr 2017) - passed away peacefully, after a brief illness, at home with his family at his side. He was born in Kuestrin, Germany and emigrated to Canada in 1952 with his parents, Helene and William Schaumburg. He graduated in 1962 from the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He later earned a Master's Degree at the USN Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. He was a member of the Society of Professional Engineers. He served 35 years in the Royal Canadian Navy and enjoyed the challenges of a variety of positions including his role as Commanding Officer of the Ship Repair Unit in Esquimalt from 1986-1989. This was followed by a senior appointment as manager of a NATO anti air warfare project in Washington, DC. He retired in 1993 and after 3 years spent sailing in the Caribbean, moved to Victoria. His retirement years were filled with sailing, trawlering, renovating and enjoying his involvement in many creative projects. Time spent at his beloved Buck Lake, Ontario cottage was treasured. He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 54 years, Elaine; two daughters, Karen (Kim) Dodds and Susan (Michael) Leeder. He was a proud and much loved GPapa to 6 grandchildren, Erin, Courtney, Sarah, Matthew, Ryan and William. The family would like to thank Victoria Hospice for their compassionate support. SCOTT, William Lennox, Chief Petty Officer Bandsman, RCN / C.A.F. (Navy) (12 Jul 1928 - 23 Mar 2017) - With sadness, the family of Bill Scott announce his passing at Comox, BC on March 23rd, 2017. Bill was born in Trail, BC. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Lillian Scott; brothers, Joe, Gordon, Ed, and Ray; and leaves behind his wife, Mary of 69 years whom he met while she was in grade 7. He also leaves behind his children, Bill (Joyce), Judy (Gerald), Bob (Donna); grandchildren, Erin (Alvin), Jim (Christina), Brian (Karla), Robert, Thomas (Crystal); great-grandchildren, Avery, Ella, William, Andrew, Cameron, Zander, Jordan, Riley, Teagan; brothers, Don, Dave (Carol), Doug (Penny); and many nieces and nephews. As a toddler in a buggy with his parents and several half brothers and sisters, Bill travelled by river raft to Fort Vermilion, Alberta where he spent his early youth. The family then returned to the Vancouver area. At a young age, Bill joined the Royal Canadian Navy as a musician and joined the Naden Band as a Trumpeter and Bugler. He was a Bugler for Princess Elizabeth on her tour to Canada in 1951. During the 1950s and 60s Bill was band master at Comox Sea Cadet Camp. He was very involved in sports and a member of the 1967 Military Champion Volleyball Team. Bill was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying everything and anything outside from simple gardening and yard care to hunting, fishing, and camping. After retirement, he found a new passion in golf which he enjoyed until very recently. Never to be idle, Bill became a long-standing member of 41 years in the Odd Fellow and Rebecca Lodge, serving in many different positions including Past Grand Master, Past Grand Patriot, and Department Commander. He retired as Brig/General of the IOOF Military Branch. During his retirement, he also became involved with the Wachiay Friendship Center where he has many friends. A Family & Friends Tea in memory of Bill will be held at 1:00pm on Sunday, May 21st, 2017 at the Grantham Odd Fellows Hall, 6040 Old Island Hwy, Courtenay, BC.
