JONES, Donald
Allan, CD, Major - age 76, Middleton, passed away suddenly
at home on February 14, 2017. Born in Star City, Sask., he was
the son of the late Robert E. Jones (Star City, Sask.) and the
late Ethel B. Mitchell (Canora, Sask.). Born into a farming
family on October 22, 1940, he spent the first 19 years of his
life working the land. In 1959, he joined the military which
began an illustrious 37-year flying career with the Royal
Canadian Air Force (RCAF) initially as a Radio Officer then
for most of his career as a Tactical Navigator on the Argus,
the Aurora, and while on exchange at RAF St. Mawgan, Cornwall
on the Nimrod from 1970 to 1972. Don flew into all of the NATO
Maritime Patrol bases in North America and in Europe. An avid
aviator he volunteered to serve on Sea King helicopters rather
than being posted to a non-flying position. From 1979 to 1981
he was the Helicopter Detachment Commander aboard HMCS Huron.
While so serving he obtained a Watch Keeping certificate, a
rare feat for an aircrew member. A natural leader with
outstanding tactical skills and excellent teaching abilities
he held the highest of respect from the Anti-Submarine-Warfare
community. As a result he along with a few others became the
first Aurora navigators to become Crew Commanders, a position
normally held by pilots. On retirement he was the Chief
Aircrew Instructor at the Maritime Patrol and Training
Squadron. He accumulated almost 13,000 flying hours, earning
the VP International Gold Pin awarded for accumulating 8760
hours, one full year while airborne in support of Maritime
Operations. A stalwart supporter of VP International, he
served as its President from 1975 to 1976 and from 1982 to
1985. He spent his retirement life by travelling, spending
winters in the southern United States, travelling abroad and
then eventually just enjoying his lakeside home with his soul
mate second wife, Donna Jones, Halifax. He was predeceased by
his beloved sister, Lynda Carole Jones (April 1962, Star
City). From his first marriage, he is survived by his sons,
Dwayne Allan Jones (Melinda), Lower Sackville; Daryle Robert
Jones, Edmonton, Alta.; and Deryk Edward Jones (Marie),
Edmonton; grandchildren, Shannon Lee Jones, Middleton; Kyle
Edward Jones, Edmonton; and Coletyn Allan Jones-Trimper,
Middleton; various aunts, uncles and cousins in Saskatchewan
and British Columbia. As per Don's wishes he was cremated,
there will be no visitation or funeral, rather a Celebration
of Life ceremony will be held later in the summer.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home,
398 Main St., 398 Main St. (902) 825-3448. Donations in Don's
memory can be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova
Scotia in lieu of flowers.

'FIGHTER' A warrior, So strong and
brave He fights to see another day. His wife he loves And she
loves him back, A family man there's no Doubt about that. The
battle he fights The toughest one, It takes a toll. There is
so much pain But yet he fights, For his children and grandkids
The bravest grandfather one would ever see. He puts up a front
Through all the pain, He manages to smile, He is so brave. At
Christmas he sits and reads, Giving his grandchildren Such
precious memories. Teaching them how to be Strong and brave.
He is in so much pain But yet rarely complains. It's truly
amazing How hard he fights. He fights for you, he fights for
his life. He has so much to live for And through his strength
You will see The face of true Bravery. By Maggie MacNeil,
Brian's beloved granddaughter.

MACKAY, Victor
Heatherington - It is with sadness, the family of Victor
announces his passing at home on February 25th, 2017
surrounded by his family, at the age of 93. Born in Truro, NS
on February 12th, 1924 to Harry and Laura (Crowell) MacKay,
upon his 16th birthday, he signed up for the Royal Canadian
Navy and served in active duty in the Atlantic and
Mediterranean from 1942 to 1945. He said back then, "If I
can walk off the ship carrying my own duffle bag and we have
won the war, I will never complain again" and he kept
that promise. Shortly after when he arrived in Wolfville to
attend Acadia University (class of 1949) and stepped off the
train, he looked around at the Town of Wolfville and declared
he would always return to raise his family here. In 1951 he
married the love of his life, Geri McCully of Bible Hill, NS
and they returned to Wolfville in 1952 to become residents of
the Town. He always considered Wolfville to be the most
beautiful place in the world. Victor accomplished much and
contributed to the community in many ways throughout his life
but family and friends were most important to him. He often
said, "If you know a person that has had a better life
than me, I sure would like to meet them". His dream of
having his own family business was realized in 1971 when he
opened MacKay Real Estate. He also loved his summers at the
cottage and later his winters in Florida. He enjoyed an active
life, with golf being a big part of it. He could never pass up
a chance for an early morning Tim's run to socialize and get
the news of the day and meet with friends. He loved to meet
and connect with people, as he always found everyone to be so
interesting and you could always learn so much. He treated
whomever he met with respect and kindness and was guaranteed
to always have a one liner for everyone. Victor is survived by
his wife Geri of 65 years, children Marty (Ross) DeWolfe,
Cathy (Jeff) Cantwell, John (Ann), Heather (Mike) Grass, and
Jim along with his 11 grandchildren; Angela, Rory (Sandy),
Connor (Sarah) Cantwell, Victoria (Simon), Stephen, James,

CURRAN, Ralph
Joseph, RCNVR - The family of Ralph Joseph Curran, 93, is
sad to announce his death on February 23, 2017 at Camp Hill
Veterans' Memorial Hospital in Halifax, after a short illness.
He was born in Halifax on March 19, 1923, the son of Roy
Howard and Florence (Pelham) Curran. He is survived by his
son, Pat Curran (Janet Hamm), and daughter, Paulette Britton
(Bob Britton), all of Halifax; grandchildren, Colleen Britton,
Robert Britton (Chrissy Lynch), Sarah Purdy (Tim), Kelly
Curran David Harris), Patrick Curran (Jin-sun Park), Joanne
Shaw (Bill), Kevin Curran, Peggy Britton, Matthew Britton,
Kate Curran and Brigid Curran; great-grandchildren, Emma
Purdy, John Pádraig Harris, Ciara Harris, Brenna Shaw and
Kieran Curran; brother-in-law, Paul Viau; and several nieces
and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 68
years, Gertrude Alma (Fairn) Curran; brother, Alan; sisters,
Grace Russell and Florence Viau; grandson, Sean Patrick
Curran. Dad grew up in St. Patrick's parish, in the area where
his father operated a garage. He spent most of World War II on
corvettes in the North Atlantic as a member of the RCNVR. Just
after the war he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and spent two
years in the naval hospital at Cornwallis, where he had been
posted at the time he met Mom in 1943. He became a career
employee with Central (now Canada) Mortgage and Housing
Corporation, working throughout Atlantic Canada, on the
Prairies and in the North. He retired and returned to Halifax
in 1981. Dad made friends of all ages easily and from
everywhere and kept in touch with countless of them by letter
and telephone. With Mom's help, the house was like a United
Nations, with visitors over the years from such widespread
locations as Turkey, Lesotho, Réunion Island, Mexico, Poland,
Cambodia, China and Ireland. He wrote, called and visited when
he could relatives and friends from across Canada and in the
U.S. and he corresponded for years with several Catholic
missionaries. He also wrote quirky, hilarious letters and
cards to his children and grandchildren. He was generous with
both his time and money, helping many individuals and
organizations. He was a mentor, almost a second father, to
some young Polish refugees who jumped ship in Halifax Harbour
and went on to have successful lives in Canada. He gave a
special welcome to the former Waterford Crystal workers who
came to Halifax in the late 1990s. Animals always responded to
Dad as someone with affection for them. He kept a photo of his
cat companion Tómas in his hospital room. He also took a
great interest in environmental issues. He was a good athlete,
mainly as a baseball and hockey player when he was young. He
had many lifelong friends from his years of coaching minor
baseball and minor hockey. In middle age he took up golf and
played regularly into his 80s. Dad cherished his Irish
heritage and had many Irish friends in Nova Scotia, Ireland
and elsewhere. He maintained an excellent collection of Irish
books and recordings. He was a charter member of An Cumann /
The Irish Association of Nova Scotia and had great regular
telephone conversations with what seemed to be the entire
membership. Dad was a man of strong opinions, a family
characteristic. If you didn't agree with him, you might have
said stubborn, but even diamonds have flaws. Visitation will
take place 2-4 pm and 6-9 pm on Monday, February 27, at J.A.
Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. Mass of
Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 28,

LAYMAN, Donald
James (04 Oct 1923 - 08 Mar 2017) - The well-lived
life of Donald James Layman came to a peaceful end in the
Veterans' Unit of Wascana Rehabilitation Hospital on March 8,
2017. Don grew up on the family farm in Riceton with his
parents Billy and Lorena and siblings Eldon, Russel and Ruth.
Upon completing grade 12 he began working at a bank in Regina.
When WWII started he enlisted and like many land-locked,
non-swimming Saskatchewan farm boys where else but the Royal
Canadian Navy. After basic training in Equimalt and Winnipeg
he was stationed at the naval base in Grenoch, Scotland in
1943. In Scotland he met and married the love of his life,
Margaret Fernie Shankland, a lovely, intelligent lass from
Paisley. Following his war service, Don resumed his career in
banking in Regina, however his interest in cars led him to
take a job as a traveler with Ford Motor Company where his
considerable social skills were put to good use. His territory
covered most of the province and he fell in love with the lake
area north of Prince Albert. Consequently, he jumped at the
chance to join Modern Motors, the Ford Dealership in Prince
Albert as a salesman. He moved to P.A. with Margaret and
infant son Bill in 1951. Daughters Barbara (1952) and Lisa
(1961) completed the family portrait. He and a partner took
over as owners of the dealership in 1969. Don built his own
house from the ground up in the Veterans area of Prince
Albert, and also established one of the early cabins at Neis'
Beach, Emma Lake where they enjoyed many happy years with
wonderful friends and all the beloved Layman pets. Don's love
of the lake and environment led him to serve for many years as
a beach rep and other committees in Lakeland. He was an active
member of the Canadian Wildlife Federation and the Prince
Albert Kinsmen club. He enjoyed many a golf game with good
friends on the Emma Lake course. He and Margaret were able to
enjoy summers at the lake well into their 80's. Don and
Margaret moved to Saskatoon for several years, but health
concerns necessitated a move to Regina in 2010 to be closer to
daughter Barb and family. Don and Margaret were among the
first residents of College Park Retirement Residence. Don
thoroughly enjoyed meeting so many new people there and
participated in many activities with bridge, cribbage,
shuffleboard, dances and pool being favourites. Following the
death of his beloved Margaret in 2011, Don remained at College
Park until mobility and other health problems required him to
move to the Veteran's Unit of the WRC in Regina in November
2016, where he received loving care from a kind and dedicated
staff. Don was predeceased by his wife Margaret; his parents
Billy and Lorena Layman; brothers Eldon and Russell Layman;
and sister Ruth Aitken. He is survived by his daughters
Barbara (Jim) Stewart and Lisa Layman (William Holden); son
Bill Layman (Lynda Holland); grandchildren Fraser and Lauren
Stewart and Zane Layman. Don was successful at everything he
put his mind to, particularly business, building, photography
and painting. He was utterly unique and had eccentric but
effective ways of doing things. Don, like most of his
generation, put service to country before self-interest. We
will remember him with love and laughter. A memorial service
for Don will be held for family and friends at the family
cottage at Emma Lake in the summer of 2017. Anyone wishing to
make donations in memory of Don may do so to a charity of
their choice. (Regina Leader-Post 11 Mar 2007)

retired from work where he spent his time fishing and also
travelling with his first wife, the former Beatrice Miller.
After her death he married Tena and travelled extensively with
