BOLLI, Barbara
Helen (nee Chauvin) February 3, 1923 - February 25, 2017
With profound sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our
beloved Mother on February 25th at the age of 94. Born in
Montreal, she was the daughter of Helena and Stanley Chauvin,
only sister to her late brothers Bill and Ernie, and loving
wife to the late Flt Lt Lloyd Bolli for 64 years. Mother to
Michael, Brian, Peter, Barbara and Marc, beloved grandmother
of 8 and great-grandmother of 6. She will be remembered with
great fondness as the loving foundation and the glue to her
very tight knit family providing love, support and advice to
the very end. Barbara graduated from Montreal High and then
served as a WREN in the Royal Canadian Navy entertaining
Canadian troops across Europe during WW2. Following her
marriage to Lloyd in Banff, Scotland in 1945, she moved to
Jasper and in 1953 made Victoria her final home. Barbara was a
lover of life, a friend to many, a hotel entrepreneur, legion
president, realtor, bridge player, lawn bowler, greatest cook
ever, curious foodie, volunteer, animal lover, avid traveller
and fashionista. She moved to Ross Place retirement residence
two years ago. Her strength, tenacity and will to live enabled
her to live a full and engaged life despite declining health.
She was a true survivor and battled her medical challenges to
the end. The family wishes to thank her medical professionals,
Ross Place, Beacon Services and the Victoria Hospice for their
gracious and loving care. We miss you so much Mom. You will be
in our hearts forever. A memorial service to be held at a
later date.

NATION, George
Hugh, LCdr, RCNVR (04 Aug 1919 - 12 Mar 2017) - died peacefully at the age of 97 on March 12th, 2017
at his home in Victoria, BC after many years of remarkably
good health. He was the devoted husband of Ann Massy Nation
(née Goolden), father to Maddie Goolden, Christopher Nation
(Betty), Ted Nation (Susie) and Andrew Nation (Wendy);
grandfather to Oliver Goolden, Rachel Goolden, Gill Morgan,
Katie Nation, Vanessa Nation, Sarah Nation, Thomas Nation,
Matthew Nation and Sophie Nation; great-grandfather to Eva,
Grace and Elisabeth Goolden. Born in 1919 to Arthur 'Carrie'
Nation and Madeleine Hanson, George was their only son and
brother to Barbara Gail West, who predeceased him in 1967. He
attended many schools as his parents moved frequently,
including Selwyn House School in Montreal, Trinity College
School in Port Hope and St. George's School in Vancouver. In
1936, George enrolled at McGill University joining the Zeta
Psi fraternity while ultimately completing his Commerce degree
at UBC in 1946. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1939 and
was soon assigned to the Signals Division serving as a liaison
officer to the Royal Norwegian Navy on the King Haakon VII and
participating in the invasion of Sicily. George ended his war
career as a Lieutenant Commander on the Prince Henry
supporting the D-Day invasion. George returned to BC after the
war, and went into partnership in a farm in Duncan, raising
baby chicks. The venture was not successful except that he met
his future bride, Ann Goolden while on the farm, introduced to
him by his sister Barbara. The courtship was swift, and they
were married in 1947. After the farm, George joined Dominion
Securities in Victoria, rising through the ranks of office
management and institutional sales in Vancouver, Toronto and
Montreal before leaving the firm in 1973 as an Executive
Vice-President. His unemployment was brief and he joined Crang
& Ostiguy later that year, where he worked happily for
five years before transferring to Victoria in 1978 to open an
office for Richardson Greenshields. His long retirement in
Victoria allowed him to fulfill his interests in painting,
languages, tropical fish and above all, a keen passion and
tremendous talent for gardening. Together with his wife, Ann
they created two superb gardens at their house on Beach Drive
and later on Yale Street in Oak Bay. Ann launched the Victoria
Conservatory of Music Musical Garden Tour, which George
supported with an annual plant sale. George was the longest
serving member of the Union Club of Victoria. At his request,
there will be no funeral service. Instead, George asked that
his ashes be scattered on the rose bushes which he tended for
many years hoping that visitors and passersby will continue to
enjoy them for years to come. In lieu of flowers, donations to
the Victoria Conservatory of Music would be gratefully
received. (Victoria Times Colonist 14 Mar 2017)

navy during the Second World War. Following his years in the
Navy, he met and married Sheila Paxton in Victoria, BC, in
1946. They later moved to Avonlea where Jack worked at
farming. In 1955 he purchased the Carl Hengel farm, south of
Instow, where he and Sheila raised their four children. Along
with grain farming, they raised cattle. Sheila passed away in
November of 1979. Jack continued farming, but gradually
increased his cattle herd. Jack enjoyed his cows and was known
to never have a hungry cow! In 1981, Jack met and married
Betsy Elkink. Together they continued farming and raising
cattle. It was about this time that Jack was given a fiddle
and began a very enjoyable fiddling career. Both Jack and
Betsy enjoyed traveling to fiddle festivals and contests.
Through their keen interest in the fiddling world they met
many performers and fiddle enthusiasts who became good
friends. A highlight of Jack's summers has been his yearly
trek to Emma Lake Fiddle Camp. Meeting friends and jamming was
a very enjoyable time for him. We are so glad that he had ten
enjoyable, one week fiddle camp excursions. The fellowship at
All Saints Anglican Church was important to Jack. Jack was a
faithful member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #40, for
many years. During that time, he held different offices in the
organization. Jack enjoyed people, and was always ready for a
cup of coffee and a chat. He especially enjoyed his time with
the Senators at Conway's. He appreciated the concern of the
group while he was so sick. Jack is survived by his loving
wife, Betsy, his children, Raymond (Lisa) Bolianatz and sons,
Trond and Kurt; Marilyn (Len) Heckbert and daughters Angela
and Julia; Terry (Grant) Newell and children, Shalena, Cassie

stores. Colin and Catherine then moved to the midwest where
Colin worked for the Illinois State Library. They began their
family while living in Illinois. In 1960 they moved to
Sunnyvale, CA where Colin became the Director of Sunnyvale
Public Library. The family then moved to San Bernardino CA,
where Colin was Director of San Bernardino Public Library. His
last professional position was as Library Director of Monterey
Park Public Library in the Los Angeles area. He retired in
1987 to live full time in the San Diego area. Colin's life was
filled with many interests and passions: books, poetry, music
( especially jazz piano), tennis, gardening, and people. He
could strike up a conversation with anyone anywhere. People
would often stop along the sidewalk to admire the whimsy and
design of his garden and fishpond and share conversation with
him. He loved being active and especially enjoyed swimming in
the surf, riding his bike, and playing ping pong. Even in the
later years of his life he could be found boogie boarding the
waves at Pacific Beach. Colin's eloquent way with words and
his ability to recite and write poetry were gifts that will be
fondly remembered. Colin was preceded in death by his wife
Catherine. He is survived by five children: Jeremy Lucas, Greg
Lucas (Diane), Blythe Crawford, Jennifer Stettler (Ralph),
Bliss Lucas, and six grandchildren, Katherine Crawford, Bonnie
Crawford, Colin Harrington, James Lucas, Tao Stettler, and
Ellen Stettler. Colin's kind heart and quick wit will be
missed by all who knew him. He will be remembered when the
chords of a Gershwin tune sound and when a poetic combination
of words strike the listener just so. His passions in life
never left him. His curiosity, enthusiasm for life, and
intellect continued to inspire those around him every day. He
will be fondly remembered.

NEAL, Earl
Edward - It is with great sadness that we announce the
sudden passing of Earl Edward Neal on March 14, 2017. Along
with Shirley, Earl will be sadly missed by his children, Mary
Jane (Don), John (Kathi) and Andrew; his wonderful
grandchildren, Shelly and Samuel, as well as many dear
friends. Earl was born in Central Butte, Saskatchewan on
October 1, 1925. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy during
the Second World War. While on leave in Halifax, he met the
love of his life, Shirley Helene Purcell, when he crossed the
floor and asked her to dance. That dance would last the rest
of his life. Earl and Shirley were married for 68 wonderful
years. During this time they lived in many Canadian cities, as
Earl's career with the Canadian Pacific Railway progressed. He
was a longstanding member of the Free Masons and the Scottish
Rite. He retired in 1984 as the General Manager of Intermodal
Services after 42 years of service. Earl and Shirley were then
able to start their happy adventure when they turned the
family cottage in Glen Margaret, Nova Scotia into their
permanent home. At Earl's request, a private service has taken
place and there will be a family gathering at a future date in
Glen Margaret, Nova Scotia. If you wish, in lieu of flowers,
please make a donation to Siloam Mission. (Winnipeg Free Press

ROBERTSON,
Allan Parker (1926-2017) - passed away on March 11, 2017.
He is survived by Evelyn, wife of 69 years, son Don (Marilyn),
daughter Heather (Dave), grandchildren Jason (Pam), Jennifer
(Michael), Chris and Stephen, and great-granddaughters Xen and
Ariella. Dad grew up with four siblings in Watrous, SK. Dad
would tell stories of playing hockey with "road
apples" (frozen horse dung) for pucks. During his
childhood, while suffering from acute appendicitis, Dad barely
made it to hospital after being "ambulanced" in a
hearse with no shocks on a gravel road. In the Second World
War Dad joined the Navy when the recruiter turned a blind eye
to the fact that he was only 16. After the war he returned to
Winnipeg where he apprenticed as a Carman for the C.N.R. Dad
met Mom on the tennis court when he and a buddy asked Mom and
her friend to play doubles. They hit it off and never looked
back. Dad and Mom would have celebrated their 70th wedding
anniversary this April 3. Dad was a wonderful father, grandpa
and great-grandpa - very much the "oak tree",
possessing a quiet confidence. He was always there to help,
whether you had car trouble, were installing a picture window
(that was a bit of excitement!), or laying flooring. Dad loved
his gardens and had a large vegetable garden out back and
beautiful roses out front that drew everyone's attention (as
well as deer). Over the years Mom and Dad had many homes and
vacation places, all of which Dad "handymanned" into
shape. Some of their best times were spent at Falcon Beach and
Paradise Village. They had a large number of bird feeders and
Dad was always at war with the squirrels. Their final home was
Dakota House where they had many good friends and wonderful
staff. Dad and Mom spent their early retirement years
travelling to Europe and Cuba, and wintering in California,
Arizona, and Vancouver Island. We would have Christmas
complete with tree at Thanksgiving, and then off they'd go!
Dad was a kind and gentle man, who, although gravely ill,
fought to remain in this world to care for Mom, who was also
ill. Blessedly, his pain and struggle has ceased. Dad has
requested a family gathering only. In lieu of flowers, please
donate to the charity of your choice. (Winnipeg Free Press 18

WALKER, John
Philip Vernon, LS, RCN - With profound sorrow, we announce
the sudden passing of our family patriarch, John Philip Vernon
Walker, at his home on Wednesday, March 8, 2017, after 82
years of life. He was predeceased by our Mom, Lucy, in
September 2004. Dad never completely filled the void her
departure created and he cherished her memory throughout the
remainder of his life. We find genuine comfort in the reality
that they are together again, in perfect health and at peace.
Dad will be missed by daughter Lisa and son Dale, his wife
Cheryl and grandchildren, Serena, Breandan and Garrett. Also,
mourning his passing are brothers, Herbert, Stuart and Larry,
along with many other beloved family members and numerous
friends, like his long-time cribbage partner, Brian Nelson.
For years, they wreaked havoc about once a week at ANAF #283,
either by getting the right cards or (more often than not) by
employing dry humour and playful sarcasm. Dad was born in
Sillery, Quebec on February 28, 1935 and remained there for
the next 17 years. If anyone can lay a legitimate claim to
possessing a spirit of optimism, it was Dad. He met every
challenge life threw at him with a spirit of goodwill, an
attitude of determination and an inexhaustible reserve of good
humour. These attributes would see him through turbulent times
like living at St. Bridgette's Orphanage in Quebec for most of
his childhood. He would draw from these same sources of
strength to cope with the loss of vision in one eye in 1975
and the gradual erosion of his sight entirely during the last
half of his life. With equal doses of resolve and humour, he
would survive a diagnosis of cancer, surgery and the ravages
of chemotherapy in 2006. Dad accepted without complaint the
limitations that crept incrementally into his life over the
last decade but always tried to do more than he knew he was
capable of. This was borne out by the incredible work he did
without the benefit of eyesight: starting his own seedlings
each spring and nurturing and growing a wonderful vegetable
garden with tall tomato plants, cucumbers, as well as a wide
and tasty array of mild and hot peppers. His passion for
gardening motivated him to grow more than enough plants so
there were always extras for family and friends. Until the
very end of his life, he painstakingly prepared and served
gourmet meals for his family and guests for Sunday dinners.
There remains an unfinished renovation project he started,
carpentry by touch alone! He fiercely contested every yard as
he aged and was successful as he continued living
independently in the house he loved and knew so well right to
the end. As a young adult, Dad sought adventure and joined the
Royal Canadian Navy in the early 1950s, serving over 13 years.
During that time, he found himself working and sailing on a
variety of the Tribal Class Destroyers and doing his part to
safeguard the integrity of Canadian Sovereignty while
representing Canadian principles, interests and values. He
would rise to the rank of Leading Seaman before releasing in
1967. After becoming a civilian, he moved his young family to
Winnipeg, settling here in 1968. He fell in love with his
community and never left, abiding in the same cozy home for
nearly 50 years. Through trying his hand at a few different
jobs, Dad discovered that bartending was the occupation that
liked him the most. My Dad was a gregarious, kind and honest
man, fitting qualities for the demands of the job and Dad was
highly regarded and well respected by management, co-workers
and customers alike. Our Dad's strongest, undisputed passion
however was his love and fidelity for family and close
friends. The happiness and joy he radiated was easily visible
whenever he found himself in the company of those nearest to
him. He revelled in social events and was in his element
regaling us with his amusing stories and comical anecdotes.
Funeral Mass will be Celebrated on Thursday, March 16, 2017 at
10:30 a.m. in St. Paul the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, 2400
Portage Avenue with Rev. Fr. Eric Giddins presiding. Our
family wishes to acknowledge the special place our Dad held in
his heart for the following people: Greg and Maria Anderton,
Koren Kines, her father Lorne, Steve and Adele Wall and
Corinne Weber. Rare and exceptional individuals, they
exemplify the finest qualities of neighbourliness. Our
gratitude for your kindness and concern knows no bounds and
collectively, you have elevated the standard to new heights in
the "Good Neighbour" category. We would also like to
acknowledge the very high level of professionalism and empathy
shown by attending members of the Winnipeg Police Services.
While flowers are accepted, donations may also be made in lieu
of flowers to The CNIB, The Heart and Stroke Foundation or a
charity of one's choice. Wojcik's Funeral Chapels &
Crematoriums, Winnipeg, 2157 Portage Avenue. A Final Farewell
to Leading Seaman John Walker who has now crossed the bar. Be
at Peace. (Winnipeg Free Press 14 Mar 2017)

CHAMPION, James
Pearce, AB, RCNVR - It is with heavy hearts we announce
that on February 23rd 2017, our deeply loved father and
grandfather, James Pearce Champion, passed away peacefully at
the age of 92, surrounded by love and by family. He was born
September 20th, 1924 in Burnaby, and grew up in White Rock
during the Depression alongside siblings Gordon and Doris. He
loved the ocean and spent much of his youth at the beach
swimming, fishing, and collecting seaweed for the garden.
James, or Jim, also spent a great deal of time cutting wood,
an activity he enjoyed throughout his life. In 1942, at the
age of 18, he volunteered for the Canadian Navy (RCNVR AB
Combined Operations) and served as an able bodied seaman on
the HMCS Prince David. He landed on Juno Beach at Normandy on
D-Day as a landing craft crew member (LCI). He was active
until 1945, engaged in operations in Sicily and throughout the
Mediterranean Theatre. Upon returning home, he fell in love
with Ethel Danielson. They married in 1947, and remained
together until her passing in 1990. They purchased land in
Burnaby where Jim built them a house, followed by a second
house as their family grew. Their four children, Linda, Bou
(Gail), James, and Steven, and the seven grandchildren that
followed, formed a tight-knit family that looked up to Jim
with a well-earned sense of love, admiration, and respect.
Once their children had left home, Jim and Ethel enjoyed
traveling throughout North America in their camper. The same
year he married Ethel, he joined the Vancouver Fire
Department. He proudly spent 37 years with the department,
much of his time on the Rescue 2 wagon in the DTES, retiring
in 1984 as a district chief. Being a fireman and the
camaraderie that came with the job meant a lot to Jim, and he
was a highly respected and admired firefighter. Later in life
Jim reconnected with Norma Johnson, a childhood friend, and
they enjoyed living and traveling together until her passing.
His last years were spent surrounded by family in the home he
built. While initially raised in the teachings of Christian
Science, Jim later self-identified as a Humanist, and there
wasn't a person he met that he couldn't find the good in, or
something to connect with them about. Jim was endlessly
curious, and had the patience to really listen to people, hear
them, and appreciate them. He was tolerant, respectful, loyal,
and kind. And he was always, to his very core, an optimist. A
service, or as Jim wanted it to be called, his "going
away party," will be held in June. In lieu of flowers,
please consider a memorial donation to the CCPA.
One thing that always stood out about Jim was his desire to do
whatever he could for others and expect nothing in return.
Perhaps the most fitting tribute would be to do something nice
for someone else and think of him. (Vancouver Sun / The
Province 18 Mar 2017)

GOWER, William
James (18 Oct 1916 - 11 Mar 2017) - a lifelong scouter,
has completed his final journey to join his beloved wife of 71
years, Margaret. Predeceased by his sister Emma and brothers
Dick, George and Roy, Jim leaves behind his sister Inez,
brother Frank (Linda), sister-in-law Dorothy, sons Bill (Jo
Ann), Ron (Kathy), Ken, Bruce (Patrice), 10 grandchildren, 8
great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Jim lived his
entire life in Victoria except for his WWII service aboard
HMCS Haida and had a long career in the postal service.
Throughout his life, Jim was an active and dedicated member of
Christ Church Cathedral, the Oddfellows Lodge, and an
Honourary Lifetime Member of the Baden Powell Guild of
Victoria. Jim had a passion for the outdoors, the more remote,
the better. He worked endlessly in his garden, explored the
wilderness of local parks, the Forbidden Plateau, Garibaldi
Park, and the Rockies. This passion was only exceeded by his
devotion to family, with a special interest in following the
activities of the younger members. Over many years, Jim and
Margaret also took great joy entertaining their many friends
at home and at the family Deep Cove property. Our family would
like to extend sincere thanks to the staff at The Veterans
Memorial Lodge at Broadmead for their exceptional care and
kindness. A celebration of Jim's life will take place at
Christ Church Cathedral at a date to be announced. In lieu of
flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

SAMPLE, William
Kenneth (Rod) (01 Jan 1924 - 03 Mar 2017) - With great
sadness we announce that Rod Sample passed away on Friday,
March 3rd 2017. Rod was predeceased by his beloved wife of 53
years, Ruth (in 1999), and by his sister Edna and brother Ted.
Born in Kerrobert, Saskatchewan in 1924, Rod had fond memories
of growing up under the prairie sky, learning to golf in open
fields, playing trombone in the local band and helping at the
family's store - Sample Brothers - Kerrobert's first
department store. Rod's love of stamp collecting traces back
to his father, William Burton Sample, who was the post master
and a founder of Kerrobert's United Church. Like many of his
generation, Rod was called to serve in WW2 and assigned to
H.M.C.S. Orkney for the duration. After the war, he continued
his service becoming a lieutenant in the naval reserve. Rod
met the love of his life, Ruth Stewart, while attending the
University of Saskatchewan. They married in Ruth's hometown of
Kamsack in 1946. Their first child, Merilyn Christie, was born
the following year and in 1950, son William Stewart was born.
A few years later the family moved to British Columbia
ultimately settling in Victoria where Rod enjoyed a long and
influential career as a music educator in both secondary and
post secondary schools. Rod's contribution to Canada's arts
community also included teaching stagecraft at the Banff
School of Fine Arts and UBC in the 1950s and 60s, as a
trombonist in the Greater Victoria Concert Band and South
Island Wind Ensemble (among others), and as an accomplished
water colour painter. Rod will be remembered fondly by the
many students he inspired and encouraged - some of whom went
on to play in ensembles and orchestras around the world. Rod's
family will remember his creativity, kindness, patience and
love, and that he kept a wonderful sense of humour until the
end. Rod is survived by his devoted sister Joan (Alan); and
children, Merilyn (Gary) and Bill (Helesia); grandchildren
Christie (Dan), Colleen (Mende), Max, Miles and Thea; and
great grandchildren, Colin, Danielle, Jade and Lilijana. Rod
is also survived by nephew Laurie and his wife Janet who
provided much love and friendship. Rod will be remembered by
his cousin, Mary, and her husband Bob Steele who served as
best man and woman at Rod and Ruth's wedding - and vice versa.
The family would like to thank caring staff at Royal Jubilee
Hospital and Sunrise Vancouver who ensured Rod's final months
were dignified and comfortable. In lieu of flowers, donations
may be made in Rod's memory to the 'Rod Sample Fund' for a
music student award at the University of Victoria. A
celebration of life will be held on Saturday, April 1st from
2-5pm at Goward House in Victoria. (Victoria Times Colonist 18

DENMAN, Richard
Douglas - age 90, of Dartmouth, passed away January 7,
2014 of lymphoma in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born and
raised in Outremont, Que., he was a son of Considine and
Gertrude (Turner) Denman As a teenager, with the Second World
War raging, Richard's mother and sister were elated when he
advised them that he was no longer contemplating joining the
Air Force. Their elation, however, was short lived when he
proudly announced that he had joined the Navy instead! During
the war Richard sailed on HMC ships Woodstock and Kincardine,
conducting convoy escort on the St. John's to Londonderry run.
While on Kincardine he took part in the coastal bombardment
preceding the D Day invasion. The sight of drowned Canadian
soldiers, who had neither the opportunity to fight in the
invasion, nor to enjoy the peace time life which followed,
stayed with Richard through his life. Following discharge from
the navy after the war, Richard took over his father's
jewellery business, C. B. DENMAN's in Montreal. It was in
Montreal that Richard was smitten with a young lady at a dance
he attended. After a brief courtship he married Lillian, a
romance which lasted till his passing. In the 1950's Richard
rejoined the navy and was transferred to Halifax where he
sailed on a multitude of ships in his trade of 'surface
weapons.' In 1965, Richard was on the bridge of HMCS Nipigon
when it suffered a horrific explosion and fire which claimed
the lives of three sailors and was responsible for grave
injuries to several others. Richard and many members of the
Nipigon crew were dismayed in the manner this incident was
downplayed with little said then, or now, of the loss of life,
horribly burned survivors and heroics of crew members who
fought the fire. Retiring from the Navy in the mid 1970's
Richard began a brief career with Bedford Institute of
Oceanography from which he retired in the mid 1980's. Outside
work life he was a cub leader with 1st Woodlawn A pack in
Dartmouth, coached hockey briefly for Woodlawn Hockey
Association and sat on the executive of the Metro Midget
Hockey League which preceded the AAA leagues we know today. In
retirement, Richard and Lillian spent winters in Seminole,
Fla. and summers in Middleton, where they dusted off an old
golf game and commenced play at Eden Golf Club and more
recently at Paragon Golf Club. Richard and Lillian had a
lifetime penchant for walking and were familiar faces at
Shubie Park and Portland Estates paths. Throughout his life,
Richard was an active and supportive father to son, Ross.
Family was paramount with Richard and Lillian where a heavy
emphasis was placed on family activities, meals and nary a
hockey/soccer game or paddling regatta involving their
grandchildren went by without their attendance. Richard was
predeceased by his parents; brothers, Kenneth, Hector; and
sister, Olive. Survived by his wife, Lillian; son, Ross
(Cheryl); grandchildren; Colden, Austin and Olivia, all of
Dartmouth; and several nieces. Thanks extended from the family
to Dr. A. Gordon his family physician, Dr. Keating of the VG
Cancer Clinic, Dr. Lymburner of DGH, as well as, the nurses
and staff of DGH 4th floor and TCU. No service by request.

MATLOCK, Edward
(Ed) - patriarch of our family, passed away peacefully at
age 95 on March 20, 2017 in Regina, Saskatchewan after a full
and fun life. Coming into the world during a prairie spring
blizzard March 3, 1922 on the family homestead near Outlook,
Saskatchewan forged a man who always saw life as fun and an
exciting challenge. At 19, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian
Navy during WWII, and served from 1941-1945 on convoy escort
during the Battle of the Atlantic. This strengthened his
appreciation and love of life. He continued his ties with the
military through the Legion and enjoyed happy hours and
dancing with his wife of 68 years, Vi, at his side. Ed's
passion was sports, especially baseball, golf, curling, and
hockey. He never let the competition get in the way of the
comradery. Throughout his long career with Federated Co-op, he
made friends wherever he worked. Once retired, you could find
Ed golfing, watching the Blue Jays or Riders or
building/fixing a deck, fence, garage, furniture, plumbing, or
electrical for his friends or family from Regina to Vancouver
Island. He knew enough about all the trades to build or fix
anything. He loved to exercise his snow blower on the
sidewalks and neighbours driveways. Ed's true love was Vi and
his extended family whom he was so proud of. Ed was
predeceased by Vi (2016) and his eight siblings. Ed is
survived by Bob (Kathy), Bryan (Rosita), Darlene (Paul),
Doreen (Terry), and Cheryl. Grandpa Ed was adored by his 16
grandchildren Mac and Ali, Jonathan (Sandy), Courtney (Darcy),
Bob (Rebecca), David, Jen, Andrea, Tracey (Bryce), Teagan,
David (Kate), Michael, Logan (Roxy), Tucker (Isabel), Daryl
(Jill), Candice (Matthew) and 12 great grandchildren Maddie,
Dallin, Jocelyn, Reagan, Hayden, Carter, Ellie, Max, Ben,
Amelia, Ryder and Ethan. Ed had no regrets, always tried to
make every situation better, and lived by his motto, "if
you are handed a lemon, make lemonade". His positive
outlook on life and laugh were infectious. He will be missed
by many. Our family is grateful to the staff at the Veterans
Care ward of Wascana Rehabilitation Centre and Red Cross
workshop for the kindness and care they gave to Ed. A
Celebration of Ed's Life will be held at later date to be
announced. Flowers are most gratefully declined. Donations in

Gerald Dawson occurred in Victoria, BC on Sunday, November
30th, 2014. He was born on February 24, 1979 in Saint John, NB
to biological mother Joanne Saunders and parents Leona
Rodrigue and William Dawson. Andrew attended Harbour View High
School and the New Brunswick Community College. Following
this, he pursed his passion with concrete, eventually founding
Andy's Concrete in Saint John. He took great pride in his
work; perfecting his craft over time. Andrew was very eager to
show his family and friends his work, often taking them along
to his job sites. In 1998, Andrew felt a call to serve his
country and decided to enroll in the Canadian Navy, attending
basic training at Saint Jean at Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu,
Quebec. Andrew will forever be remembered for his carefree
attitude and his sense of humor. A prankster by nature with a
sarcastic wit, who could sweet talk his way out of anything.
He will leave behind the legacy of always trying his absolute
best to be a rock for everyone; trying to ensure they chose
the right path in life. If he saw someone in trouble, he was
there to help - he was a wonderfully positive influence in
many lives. He loved his family more than anything in the
world, and was an incredibly devoted father to his son Trevor.
Trevor looked up to Andrew to do all the “boy” things
with. They made many visits to the skate park and went riding
bikes together often. Along with his son Trevor William David
Dawson and Trevor's mother Rebecca Halpin of Duncan, BC;
Andrew is also survived by his brother Normand Therien (Christien)
of Montreal, QC; his sisters; Sandy Payne, Carmen Therien and
Helene Dixon (Wesley) of Grand Bay-Westfield, NB, Chelsea
Crossman (Sean) of Saint John, NB, Kayleigh Lively (Ian Chase)
and Keighan Whelly (Brian) of Rothesay, NB. As well, his
nieces Rebecca, Jayla Dawson, Isabelle, Vanessa, Melody, Arya,
and his nephews Brandon, Jocelyn, Richard, Caiden, Ronan,
Theoren and Cody. Andrew was predeceased by aunt Anna Whipple
and his grandfather Howard Wilson. Arrangements have been
entrusted to the care of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland
RD (646-2424). Visitation for Andrew will be held on
Wednesday, December 10th 2014 at 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 PM.
The Memorial Service will take place on Thursday at 2:00 PM at
the Fundy Funeral Home Chapel, interment to follow at Fernhill
Cemetery. Memorial Donations in memory of Andrew may be placed
towards the Canadian Mental Health Association.

LUCIER, Gilbert
Louis - On March 19, 2016 our dad, grandpa and
great-grandpa, Gilbert Louis Lucier passed away at Cowichan
District Hospital. Dad was raised in Leask, Saskatchewan and
at the age of 16 left to go work in a mill in Vancouver. He
then got work on the Princess Mary which delivered mail and
goods up and down the coast. Dad then joined the Canadian Navy
in 1953 and served until 1974. After leaving the Navy he then
went on to work at the Kerry Park Arena. Dad worked hard for
everything he had and showed the same strength and
determination when dealing with his health issues. So cheers
to someone who got to spend his last day on earth doing what
he liked, eating porridge for breakfast, meeting friends (esp.
Matt Leeming) and family for lunch at McDonalds, then settling
down to watch some hockey. We hope you have a great seat for
the playoffs. Love From All of Us

Dujlovic. He will also be deeply missed by his sister-in-law
Joan Johnston, brothers Gordon Johnston (Eloise), and Bruce
Johnston (Laura), sister Barbara-Ann Balshaw (Michael), along
with many cousins, nieces, nephews and life-long friends.
Brian was born and raised in St. Vital growing up on Norberry
Drive. He attended Norberry School and Glenlawn Collegiate. In
his younger years, Brian spent time working on the family farm
in Green Ridge, MB where he learned of his passion for
farming. Brian did a short stint in the Royal Canadian Navy
and also worked in Edmonton as a gas meter reader. Migrating
back to St. Vital, Brian took up varied short term employment
positions leading him to upgrade his schooling, from which he
was hired on with MTS. This is where he remained until his
retirement in 1993. In 1961 Brian met the love of his life,
Charlotte. They were married on May 18, 1963. After being
blessed with a growing family of four children, they designed
and built their family dream home and hobby farm on an acreage
in St. Germaine. It was here that Brian and Charlotte
continued to give of themselves by opening their hearts and
home as a foster family. Some of these children were raised
along-side of their growing family of grandchildren and
continue to be loved as an integral part of their family
today. Family and friends were very important to Brian. He
loved spending time with them whether working in the hay
fields, repairing farm machinery or simply relaxing by a

thank you to the entire staff of Poseidon Care Centre, in
particular the second floor nursing staff that always provided
compassionate care for Brian and the family, right to the very

DUNCAN, James
Anthony (Tony) - With gratitude and sadness, Tony’s
family announces his passing from this life on Wednesday,
March 22, 2017 in London, Ontario. He is yet loved by Carroll,
his bride of 40 years. Gracious father to Jet (Joan) Takaoka
and Jane (Calvin) Zwaan. Adoring Papa to Kelsey, Kailey, James
and Anna-Lise Zwaan and Kaitlin, Evan, Olivia and Jennifer
Takaoka. Fondly remembered by his sister Harriett (Clifford)
McNamara and by many nephews and nieces. He is predeceased by
his parents Harry and Ira, and his siblings Ardelle (Jim),
Tommy (Barb), Mickey (Ray), Robin, and Sharon (Roland). Tony
was born September 15, 1933 in Parry Sound, Ontario. He
adventured into the world by joining the Royal Canadian Navy.
His earliest deployment was during the Korean conflict on HMCS
Huron tasked with “train-busting” and escort actions. He
spent much of his navy career in Halifax, NS. Transitioning
from the Navy to Canada Post, he would become Station Master
in Bedford, Nova Scotia. Introduced by his sister, he created
a great love story when he married Carroll. She was a widow
with two children whom he raised as his own. He built them a
house by a lake and filled it with joy. Tony was a lifelong
learner. He studied music as an adult, learned to paddle a
canoe, played cribbage, baked pies and butter tarts, gardened
with some success and crafted elegant Victorian screen doors.
To his wife’s chagrin, he and their teenaged son bought a
motorcycle to conquer. To his great pleasure, Tony built two
houses and a cottage. He loved to work with tools and wood. He
was born to travel: the Navy took him around the world and his
family drove him around the bend! Family road trips were a
regular occurrence including an epic cross-Canada drive in
1976 with his new bride and the kids. As his health declined,
he still ventured out to BC, Nova Scotia and the Caribbean.
Tony was a gentle soul to all who knew him. A child of the
Great Depression, he knew how to give generously. He was
hospitable and social to everyone, always putting the coffee
on to share. No trip “to town” was made without one, or
multiple stops at Tim’s. Tony did not often speak out, but
when he did, he had something to say. He retained his great
sense of humour even in failing health. His caregivers were
often left smiling at his quips. Greatest of all, Tony had a
quiet and enduring love for his Saviour, Jesus Christ. With
Carroll, Tony served as a long-time member of Bible Baptist
Church in Halifax. On the last morning of his life, he joined
in the hymn sing with other members of Parkwood’s Veterans
Care. His favourite hymn was, “Why Should He Love Me So?”.
His family is thankful to the many caregivers who assisted
Tony, especially to Karen, Linda, Elen, Rebekah, Mike and the
compassionate staff at Parkwood. A memorial service will be
held on Friday, April 7, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Westview
Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, with
Reverend Donald Calder officiating. Visitation will be held
one hour before the memorial service. Memorial gifts to HOPE
International Development Agency (www.hope-international.com)
would be kindly received.

TAIT, Frederick
Thomas Sr. (Poppy) - just days short of his 74th year,
this yeoman completed his last watch on March 29, 2017,
surrounded by members of his loving family in his residence of
White Hills Long Term Care Centre in Bedford. Having retired
from a lengthy 24-year career with the Royal Canadian Navy, he
finally crossed the bar to add to Davy Jones’ Locker. A
passionate and caring man, Poppy’s love of life and family
was clearly seen in his mischievous eyes and infectious smile,
which impacted all that he came across. A son of the late of
Margaret (Gale) and Gilbert Tait, he came from a large family
from Hamilton, Ont. where he is survived by several brothers,
sisters, nieces and nephews. Dad’s love of the sea brought
him to Canada’s East coast where he fulfilled his desire for
travel and ultimately met the first of his three Maritime
wives, Sherry (Jim). He later married Colleen (predeceased)
and then Mary (predeceased). Poppy is survived by children,
Rick (Pearl), Pammie (Scott), Connie (Kirby) and Lisa (Steve).
He was predeceased by his youngest son, Brad (Karen). Loving
memories have been made and special bonds formed with his many
grandchildren, Jen (Kieran), Sam (Dan), Andrea, Brandon,
Blair, Cail, Brianna, Tori (David), Lucas, Glennie, Noah and
Bailey. We all would like to extend our many thanks to the
White Hills staff for their great care and concern. Dad was a
highly active member with the Legion and in accordance with
his wishes, a celebration of his life will be held in Royal
Canadian Legion, Branch 160, 703 Main St., Dartmouth, on
Monday, April 3, at 1400, Carol Young officiating with a
reception to follow. Family flowers only please. Family
interment will take place at a later date. Donations can be
made to Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 160. Dad, you have
completed your watch, we are saddened yet proud that you have
let go all lines to join the others that have preceded you
onto your next journey. Fair Winds Dad, Fair Winds.
