STRAUTMAN, Margaret
Hales (nee Langley), WRCNS (Sep 1923 - Sep 2018) - It is with
great sadness that we announce the passing of Margaret Strautman.
She was predeceased by her husband Chuck in 2010. Margaret was
raised on a farm between Speers and Maymont, the only child of Frank
and Kate Langley, but with many Langley cousin neighbours to grow up
with. Mom was a quiet inspiration to her family and through her
adventures as a young, single woman, she planted the seed for
adventure and world travel in her children and grandchildren. Mom,
like many of her Langley cousins, joined up for WWII and served with
the Women's Royal Canadian Navy, from May 1943 to February 1946,
including a stint overseas at the RCN headquarters in Scotland. She
was discharged to the Nurse's Residence at the Royal Victoria
Hospital in Montreal, where she enrolled in the Nursing Program,
graduating in 1949. Mom was never afraid to travel. Special trips
included London, England to attend the coronation of Queen Elizabeth
II in 1953, a road trip to Los Angeles, driving the LA freeways in
her 1939 Ford coupe and taking her young family to Disneyland in LA
in 1970. It's no surprise that all three of Margaret's children have
travelled the world extensively and that her grandchildren are
following in the same footsteps. Mom spent time nursing at rural
hospitals and the First Nations hospital in North Battleford, but
eventually married Chuck Strautman and moved to the farm between
Speers and Mayfair. She had three children – Connie (Bob), Eddie
(Janice) and Billy (Teresa) – raising them with all rural life
experiences of the day. Grandchildren Hannah, Jacob, Alex and Ben
have all experienced the benefits of rural life as they grew up.
Margaret farmed with husband Chuck, brother-in-law Fred and son Ed
for close to 50 years, with her original homestead receiving a
Century Farm award in 2003. Mom made great community contributions,
with figure skating clubs in Mayfair, Maymont, Hafford and North
Battleford; the rink in Mayfair; Kinettes; 4-H in Speers and
Mayfair; Community Centres in Speers and Mayfair; plus the Speers
Legion. She loved her grandkids and seldom missed hockey, ball,
dance or school activities with all her grandchildren. A special
family place was the cabin at Chitek Lake. Mom moved a bunkhouse to
a lakeside lot in the mid-60s, to provide a northern holiday getaway
for family and friends. Alzheimer's is a cruel disease. It robs you
of your memories, it prevents you from having meaningful
conversations and eventually claims your dignity and quality of
life, relegating you to simply existing. We were fortunate to have
the services of two phenomenal caregivers - Nerlita and Nelma,
sisters from the Philippines - who provided unbelievable care, love
and assistance. We are forever thankful for all they and their
families provided. Mom was kept safe, comfortable and in loving
hands through her final years and was able to live in her own home
up until her final days. Please donate in Margaret's memory to the
Saskatchewan Alzheimer's Society, the Palliative Care Unit at St.
Paul's Hospital or the Saskatchewan Legion. A Memorial Service will
be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at McClure
United Church (4025 Taylor St. E.) with Rev. Debra Berg presiding.

MILLS, Barbara Désirée (nee Conway),
WRCNS (28 Mar 1922 - 08 Sep 2018) - Our dear mother passed away
peacefully in her sleep in her 97th year, at home in her retirement
residence. She had lived a full life, and after a pleasant evening
with Judith watching Nadal play tennis (her favourite next to
Federer), she slipped away in the wee hours of Saturday morning. She
was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, John Mills; her brother,
Abbott Conway; sister, Helen O'Connor; parents, Jennie and Worrell
Conway; and her good friend, Bill Macdonald. Barbara leaves her
children, Jennifer, Judith, Terry and Megan; grandchildren, Alex
Sayers, Michael Campbell, Mary Claire Mills and John Mills; and
great-grandchildren, Elsie, Arlo, Lola, Judith and Lane. Mom was
born and grew up in Huntsville with a vivid appreciation of the
woods and lakes, and could identify the calls of all the birds. She
would often talk about her favourite activities, tennis, skiing, and
the summers at Norway Point, Lake of Bays in the days of steamships
and the portage railway. Those now distant times wove through the
depression and into the war, and after studying Fine Arts at Trinity
College, U of T she joined the WRCNS and was stationed in Halifax.
She had many stories from her time in the navy as a signaller
sending messages to ships in the harbour. She had the advantage that
old friends arriving in port could contact her directly from their
ships to make plans for a party that evening. The Halifax riot at
the end of the war was a most memorable experience. After the war,
she married our father, John, had children and we eventually
returned to live in Huntsville for some years. She was a wonderful
and energetic mother who loved children, along with writing,
painting, silversmithing, reading and horses which she effortlessly
did all at once. In her eighties she wrote and illustrated two books
based on her memories of her early life in Muskoka. So here's to a
life well lived. She was a true-heart and someone who loved a
project. A special thank you to the staff at Balmoral Club who
patiently provided care and support as her mobility became
difficult. A celebration of her life will take place at the Humphrey
Funeral Home A.W. Miles - Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue
(south of Davisville Avenue) on Wednesday, September 26th at 1:00
p.m. followed by a reception. If desired, donations to the Lake of
Bays Heritage Foundation (P.O. Box 81, Baysville, ON, P0B 1A0) or
charity of choice would be appreciated. (Globe and Mail 18 Sep 2018)

NEWMAN, Rodney Davis, Slt, RCN -
Survived by loving wife, Molly, sisters Sandy & Linda, brothers
Barry & Brad, daughters Victoria & Kate, and grandsons Zane,
Axel & Moses. Rod had a full life that included many years as an
officer in the Canadian Navy. Friends made during this time were
bonds that lasted a lifetime. There he learned that a life on the
water was one of the best you could have. From Reveille on the bugle
to wake his fellow classmates at RMC, to (most fondly), the
concertina, his passion and love of music was a lifelong pursuit. An
avid band member (Rig-a-Jig), Morris Dancer and storyteller, Rod's
love of life, nature, family, music and the sea was infectious. If
he wasn't playing for the audience, he was in the front row. We will
miss him and take comfort in knowing his next adventure will be even
better than the one he had here; which was pretty fantastic. A
celebration of life dance will be held at Norway House, 1110
Hillside Ave, Victoria, BC on Friday, October 5, 2018 at 7pm

Rail. Growing up in Inglewood, Jack and friends would often be found
roaming the prairie trapping gophers for a penny a tail and
occasionally "hopping" a train ride into downtown Calgary.
Joining the Navy in 1944, at the age of 17, he was stationed in
Halifax, serving on corvettes doing convoy duty. Accepted into the
Faculty of Law at the University of British Columbia in 1947, Jack
married his sweetheart, Ileene and the two began a lifelong
adventure which gradually evolved from student poverty to a
fulfilling career in Calgary in the practice of Law. As a corporate
lawyer, Jack represented numerous small and large corporations in
the burgeoning oil and gas industry in the 50's, 60's, 70's and
80's. He loved the practice of law and he considered many of his
clients to be lifelong friends. His children, Maureen, Michael and
Kathryn were privileged, growing up in a close supportive family
with dad ensuring many weekend adventures, hiking, biking, camping,
skiing at Lake Louise, and sailing on Glenmore reservoir. In the
early 70's, under Dad's direction, the family undertook to build a
cedar log cabin along the banks of the Bow River in Canmore, where
many family activities and traditions were formed. In retirement,
Mom and Dads' love of cycling, found them riding the bike trails of
Calgary, Canmore and the Kananaskis in summer, and, as snowbirds,
the canal trails in and around Phoenix. Mom, until her death, always
just a bike length behind Dad. Dad rode his bike until just before
his 89th birthday.

wise man once said, "we grow old too fast, and we learn too
slow" - Jack Moore. Slow down and enjoy life, as life is not a

JOHNSTON, Joseph
Claire, C2ER, RCN / C.A.F. (retired Feb 1974) - was born August
24th, 1935 in Carmen, Manitoba. He died peacefully at home and his
spirit set out to sea on January 27th, 2004. He is lovingly
remembered by the Johnston family; his wife, Marypat, daughters
Kelly, Sally (Paul), and Nancy (Andy), granddaughters Sophie and
Josie Claire, brothers Burton (Elma), Lyall (Jean). He will be
missed by his extended family; Colleen Politano (Leon), the Best
brothers and their families and his many, many friends. Claire grew
up in Isabella, Manitoba, joining the Navy in 1954. In his 23 year
naval career he excelled in working with machines (the bigger the
engine the better) and creating lifetime friendships. Claire would
say that the best gift from his navy years was the trip to visit his
chum George Best's family because that's when he met his sweetheart,
Patsy. Marypat and Claire were married in Victoria in 1959 where
they began raising their daughters. Claire's work with the marine
industry took the family to Coquitlam in 1972 where Claire was a
marine surveyor for Robert Alan Ltd. In 1979, he was proud to join
C. H. Cates and Sons Ltd. (Washington Corp.) as Marine
Superintendent, later to become President and C.E.O. Claire was
respected for his wisdom and business ethics and treasured by the
people he worked with. In his retirement, Claire loved to visit the
Cates crew and was always ready to lend a hand or tell a colourful
story. In the Navy, Claire was a world traveler but what he really
loved was fishing our beautiful B.C. coast then returning to his
home and family. Claire loved every facet of fishing; planning,
organizing, friendships, sharing his catch and retelling the
adventures. Claire was his family's provider. He loved family
dinners, planning his latest project, and settling in for Hockey
Night in Canada. With each game, we'll hear his cheers and recall
his colourful commentary. Those who had the incredible good fortune
to know Claire as a husband, father, brother, colleague, and friend
would say he was truly one of the finest men they had ever met. He
was respected and admired for his kindness, humour, generosity and
above all his unfailing integrity. His legacy is the way he lived
his life - a chart we will use to keep us on course. A celebration
of Claire's life will be held at Boal Chapel, 1505 Lillooet Road,
North Vancouver, 14:00 hrs, Sunday, February 8, 2004. As Claire
requested, this spring there will be a private ceremony at Manson's
Deep where he will be committed to the sea. Smooth sailing, J.C.,

wishing to honour Claire may contribute to the B.C. Cancer
