Launched: 17 Nov 1943

Commissioned: 03 Jun 1944

Paid off: 17 Jan 1946

Fate: Sunk as a breakwater in 1948

 

Commissioned at Montreal on 03 Jun 1944, EASTVIEW arrived at Halifax on 26 Jun 1944 and proceeded to Bermuda to work up. On her return in Aug 1944 she was attached to EG C-6 as Senior Officer's ship, and on 18 Sep 1944 left St. John's with her first convoy, HXF.308. For the balance of the European war she was continuously on Atlantic convoy duty, and was one of the escorts of HX.358, the last HX convoy of the war, leaving St. John's 27 May 1945. She arrived in Londonderry (at the head of Lough Foyle) on 6 or 7 Jun 1945 and departed for Canada on 13 Jun 1945.  In Jul 1945 she transferred to the west coast and had barely commenced tropicalization refit when work was stopped and the ship laid up in reserve at Esquimalt. She was paid off on 17 Jan 1946, and sold in 1947, and her hull made part of a breakwater at Oyster Bay, B.C., the following year.

Webmaster's note: This Merchant Aircraft Carrier may be one of the Rapana Class converted oil tankers - 8,000 tons standard, 16,000 tons deep load, 12 knots, 3 aircraft, crew 118 (64 RN plus 54 MN), converted 1942-44. Anglo-Saxon Petroleum Company tankers. No hangar and lift; aircraft maintained and stored on deck. Armament: 1 x single 4 in (102 mm) QF MK IV, 2 x single 40 mm Bofors, 6 x single 20 mm Oerlikon cannons

HMCS EASTVIEW - Bermuda for Work-ups - Jul-Aug 1944

 

(WM25) Bermuda  (WM26) Eyetye (Italian) sub off Bermuda (Historical note: After Italy surrendered in 1943, its subs were turned over to the Allied forces. One sub, ONICE, was refitted and sent to Bermuda to be used as a training sub for anti-submarine exercises. These photos are of the Senior Officer Pennant and White Ensign from HMCS EASTVIEW's last convoy escort.  They were lowered (and kept) by Signalman Douglas Scott at the end of the convoy after it arrived in England.  The Senior Officer on board was Commodore Jeffrey Brock, RCN. The above flag and pennant are in the possession of Doug's grandson, Joseph Fogarty, PO2, RCN.
