BECKETT, Brian Harwood (21
May 1936 - 29 Aug 2013) - Brian left peacefully on his final voyage
August 29, 2013. Survived by his wife and best friend Deanna Joy Beckett, sons
John (Lorene) and Jim (Marilyn), daughters Jennifer (Danny), Judith (Duffy),
Jane (Rob) and Julie (Rob) and his 11 grandchildren and 1 great grand child.
Brian was born in Hamilton, Ontario in 1936 where he went to school until
grade 9 and dropped out to take on various jobs. Brian joined the Navy in 1953
at the mature age of 17 as an ordinary seaman. Brian had a stellar career in
the navy even though it appears he could not hold a job longer than 2 years.
By 1962 he had risen to the rank of Petty Officer 1st Class. After being asked
twice to become an officer he attended prep school in 1964/1965. He was posted
to Cornwallis NS from 1965 to 1968 for navigation training and finally posted
to HMCS Annapolis for watch-keeping duties. He then attended a long operations
course from 1970 to 1971 on HMCS Kootenay after which he was posted to the
west coast aboard HMCS Chaudiere. He was promoted to the St. Croix as the XO
from 1973 to 1974 and then sent to staff college in Toronto from 1974 to 1975.
After a brief and unrewarding stint in Ottawa, he was promoted to XO of Yukon
and Provider from 1979 to 1980. He then became the Captain of Kootenay from
1980 to 1982. Brian then spent 3 years in Norfolk, Virginia planning and
executing navel exercises with NATO forces. His last post was as Base
Commander of CFB Esquimalt from1987 to 1989 where he retired at the rank of
Captain (N) CD OMM. He met and fell in love with Deanna while on leave from
the navy in 1955. It did not start well, as she thought he was arrogant and he
called her for another girls phone number. However, with the help of Deanna’s
best friend Valerie, who also happened to be Brian’s sister, he married to
what was to become his life partner in 1956. After raising 6 children together
and serving his country for 37 years, they set off on a two year around the
world sailing cruise that lasted 10 years. The cruise, which they had planned
all of their lives, started in Cyprus, went around the Mediterranean, up the
midi canal through France, northern seas, down the coast to the Canary
Islands, across the Atlantic and eventually ending in the Chesapeake. Brian
was happiest at sea with Deanna when land was nowhere to be seen. He then
established a successful boat surveying company which lasted 12 years and saw
Brian crawling over 1200 boats. Brian was a lifelong learner and serviced his
community until the very end. After settling in Oak Bay in 2000 Brian joined
the Oak Bay Kiwanis, and eventually became President. His real passion was
being on the Board of the Oak Bay Kiwanis Pavilion and making sure the Willows
Tea Room was kept running to ensure ongoing funding for Pavilion activities.
Fair winds and fair seas my love. A private family ceremony will occur on
Tuesday, September 3rd. A Celebration of Life with friends and family will be
held Wednesday, September 4th from 1pm to 4pm at his home. Donations in Brian’s
memory may be made to the Oak Bay Kiwanis Pavilion or the Canadian Cancer
Society.

DRAIBYE, Mark - (25 Jul
1930 - 20 Jun 2014) - following a long battle with skin
cancer and other debilitating conditions. Mark Draibye spent most of his life
devoted to the Canadian Navy. He left home at thirteen and started his career
working as a dishwasher while living on the streets of Montreal. He later
worked at a logging camp in northern Quebec and for the merchant marines - but
he found his true calling and love when he entered the Canadian Armed Forces.
A natural leader, following his service in the Korean war and a number of
positions on warships and a minesweeper, he became a deep sea clearance diver
and later the Executive Officer for the Diving Unit in Esquimalt, lead the
western team to victory in the Navy Gun Run competition for the Queen's visit
in 1979, and ultimately rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander as the Deck
Officer on the Supply Ship, Provider. Following retirement he became the
Commander of the cadet camp at HMCS Quadra in Comox, B.C., a position he was
immensely proud of, and one he often said he felt he had worked towards for
his entire life. Mark Draibye loved beauty and he spent much of his life
creating beauty - whether it be creating the perfect meal, bringing an
exquisite flower to life, or sculpting the character and abilities of young
cadets, he worked tirelessly, always aiming for perfection. A man who had
experienced poverty, he was well known for his generosity. Mark Draibye is
survived by his wife of sixty years, Joan Draibye, with whom he fell in love
the first time he saw the auburn haired beauty in her green Eisenhower jacket
standing across the room at a dance in Montreal. Mark is also survived by his
three grown children, Kathy (Jim), Sandra, and Gordon (Lucie); five
grandchildren, Renee (Doug), Sarah (Steve), Andrea, Elizabeth and Sebastien,
and six great grandchildren, Brandon, Ryan, Jonathan, Ethan, Sophie and
Cooper. He will be missed. The service for Mark Draibye will be held at 11 am
on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at "Our Lady of the Rosary Parish" on 798
Goldstream Avenue in Langford, B.C.

GARDNER, Raymond Arthur, CWO,
M.M.M., CD (11 Jan 1936 - 03 Aug 2012) - Survived by his wife Marie
(aka Maggie) and children Terry (Marcus, James), Jeff (Naomi, Emma, Teegan,
Oliver), Les (Monique), Liane (Cam, Brian, Steven, Carli, Morgan). Dad retired
after serving 35 years in the Canadian military. His first posting was to
France, where he met and married Mom. In 1981 he was awarded the Order of
Military Merit. One of his postings was on the HMCS Kootenay. Having joined
the Air Force originally, he often didn't have sea legs. This resulted in the
ship doctor and staff to present him with a hard hat that read "If down,
call Doc". Little known was the fact that he was artistic...so when the
sky is spectacular, that will be Dad painting.... Dad had a gift for words. We
all thought he should have been a preacher by all the sermons were heard
throughout our childhood. Much thanks to Dr. Lintern, the doctors and nurses
at the Victoria Cancer Clinic, RJH and VGH and the Westshore Homecare. He is
missed, yet no longer suffers. One of his granddaughters said it best..
"You are always in my heart". In lieu of flowers, we would be
honoured if donations were made to the Victoria Cancer Clinic in his name. A
Memorial Service will take place on Sunday, August 26 at 1pm at the Prince
Edward Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, located at 761 Station Ave. in
Langford. (Victoria Times-Colonist from Aug. 18, 2012)

Gerald (Gerry) Clifford Garneau of Sooke, B.C. was born on October 24, 1939 in
Red Lake, Ontario to Clifford and Miriam (nee Ketola) passed away on Saturday,
October 5, 2013 at age 73. Gerry is survived by his wife Shirley (nee Tenhunen),
children Randy, Nadina Kelso and Dana Vowles, son in-laws Mike Kelso and Gray
Buchanan. Grandchildren Brent, Kari, Aaron, Cole, Clay, Sylas and Mika.
Brother Bernie, sisters Margret and Sharon, step-sister Sonja. Also survived
by several sister and brother in-laws and numerous nieces, nephews and
cousins. He was raised by his Aunt and Uncle Irja and Antti Puska on the farm
in Intola. He attended Intola and Five Mile Schools and Port Arthur
Tech/Hillcrest High School. Gerry joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1957,
travelling from coast to coast until settling with his family in Sooke in 1969
and serving until 1975. He continued his career at sea for the Institute of
Ocean Sciences and worked on the John P. Tully, retiring in 1990. Gerry was
the owner operator of Jet-Vac & Gerry's Oil Burner Service for 6 years and
served with the RCMP Auxiliary force in Sooke. He was a long-time member of
the Royal Canadian Legion Sooke Branch. Gerry loved to be on the sea, thus was
an avid fisherman and also enjoyed trolling the shores of One Island Lake.
Gerry's favourite saying was, "A sailor's place is on the ship, the
ship's place is out at sea and land is a navigational hazard!" I am Free
Don't grieve for me for now I am free, I'm following the path God laid for me,
I took His hand when I heard Him call; I turned my back and left it all, I
could not stay another day To laugh, to love, to work or play, Tasks left
undone must stay that way I found that place at the close of day, If my
parting has left a void, Then fill it with remembered joy, A friendship
shared, a laugh, a kiss, Ah, yes, these things I too will miss, Be not
burdened with times of sorrow I wish you sunshine of tomorrow, My life has
been full; I savored much Good family, friends, good times, a loved one's
touch, Perhaps my time seemed all too brief, Don't' lengthen it now with undue
grief, Lift up your heart and share with me, God wanted me now, He set me
free! In respect to Gerry's wishes, cremation has taken place. A private
family interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of cards and flowers,
donations to be made in memory of Gerry Garneau to the Juan de Fuca Salmon

GRAINGER, Robert Keith C.D.
(06 Nov 1935 - 12 Jun 2007) - It is with profound sadness that we announce
the sudden passing of our brother, uncle and friend in Victoria, B. C. on June
12, 2007. Keith was born and raised in Moose Jaw where he attended King
Edward, Ross and A.E. Peacock. After a short time with the C.P.R., at the age
of 19, Keith decided to join the navy. Following basic training in Halifax,
Keith served at Edmonton, Cold Lake and Naden. Keith served aboard 8 navy
destroyers: HMCS St. Therese, Oshawa, Margaree, Assiniboine, Qu'Appelle,
Chaudiere, Yukon and Saskatchewan. Keith was a very proud and loyal member of
the armed forces. Keith received his 25 year certificate upon retiring from
the navy in 1980 and then continued to serve at the CFB Esquimalt Tool
Crib. When Keith decided to finally retire and no longer punch a clock, he had
served for 40 years. Keith had a love for a great story, whether it was
one-on-one, a great movie or factual stories of W.W.II. Keith's large
collection of historical war volumes have been donated and accepted by the
base library at CFB Esquimalt. He was passionate about human rights, our
civil liberties and was a very proud Canadian. Keith was easily engaged in a
political discussion and was deeply affected by our current losses of service
men and women overseas. He shared his unique sense of humor and kindness with
everyone he met. Above all, Keith was intensely loyal and generous with his
love for his family. Distance was never a hindrance for Keith to send his love
to us at home. Keith was predeceased by his father, Robert James (March 22,
1971) and his mother Agnes (February 14, 2001). Left to mourn and deeply miss
our brother are Ian and wife Vi of McLean, SK, and sister Muriel and husband
Colin of Moose Jaw, SK. Keith was a kind and generous uncle to Heather and Dan
Owens and family, Brent and Monika Grainger and family, Brenda and Mitch Bauck,
Pam and John Foster and family, Chere and Shawn Gilbert and family and Dave
Howard. We will treasure and hold dear our memories of a very special man. Our
brother, our friend, our protector, we will miss you more than mere words can
convey. As well as his loving family in Saskatchewan, Keith will be dearly
missed by his special circle of friends in Victoria that he met on his daily
rounds. Special mention to his best friends Rose and Mirek Prusa, his
other" family at Chapter's and his long time friend Jim Munro and those
he touched we have yet to meet. Cremation was performed and his ashes, along
with a beautiful bouquet of his favorite roses were scattered at sunset on the
Pacific Ocean at Victoria, BC. McCall Bros. Funeral Directors, 1400 Vancouver
Street, Victoria, BC, V8V 3W3 assisted our family in our time of loss.

Victoria in 1981 as the Administrator of the Chemistry Department and remained
there until his retirement in 1988. Always active, he had a great love of the
outdoors and wilderness canoeing. His expeditions included trips with wife
Mary down the Nahanni, Liard and Mackenzie rivers, and round the Queen
Charlottes and Vancouver Island. He was a member for many years of the
Victoria Canoe and Kayak Club, serving a term as president. He enjoyed hiking
the mountains of Vancouver Island, often accompanied by one or more Labradors.
His interest in plants seen on his hiking trips led to his memberships in the
Vancouver Island Rock & Alpine Garden Society and the Rhododendron
Society. His other love was salmon fishing - an endeavor that met with variable
success. Interested in politics, he campaigned for the Liberal Party in
several provincial and federal elections. After building a cottage at Shirley,
he became treasurer of the local volunteer fire department and pursued his
interests in cultivating apples and rhododendrons, thwarting the marauding
wildlife and walking his dogs along beautiful French Beach. He is survived by
Mary, his beloved wife of 54 years, daughter Sarah and sons Michael and Mark,
four grandchildren, James, Lizzie, Edward and Julia and his brothers Peter,
Graeme and John. A memorial service will be held at the Interdenominational
Chapel of the University of Victoria at 1:00 pm on October 18, 2006. Reception
to follow at the University Faculty Club. Parking in lots 6 or 10 is
suggested. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Western Canada

LUKE, Robert John, RCN -
age 81, born June 30, 1931, died peacefully at home with his wife by his
side in Victoria BC, St David's Day, March 1, 2012. Bob was the son of
Josephine Hampson and daredevil dirt track racer Jack "Lightning"
Luke of Cardiff Wales. Looking for a different sort of adventure Robert chose
the call" of the sea and at the age of 14 ventured off to train for that
career aboard the famed HMS Worcester in Chatham England. In 1948 Bob joined
the Royal Mail Lines shipping company as an officer and sailed worldwide with
RML until 1956. It was during his tenure at Royal Mail Lines that he met the
love of his life Barbara Jeremiah, who coincidentally had grown up in a small
village an hour outside of Cardiff. Barbara was a passenger onboard the cargo
ship Alcantra where "Bobby" was the 3rd officer. Legend has it that
Bobby actually jumped rank to ask Barbara to dance at the evening festivities
and the rest became history! Following their courtship and marriage Robert
joined the Canadian Navy and thus followed a successful and rewarding Naval
career until his retirement in 1986. Through his career Robert served on both
coasts moving to Victoria from Halifax in 1980. Bob had the honor and pleasure
of commanding three different ships: the HMCS Fundy, the HMCS Saguenay and
finally the HMCS Qu'Appelle. His career culminated with receiving the Order of
Military Merit in 1987 for outstanding performance from then Governor General
Jean Sauve. Robert was also an avid rugby fan and took great pleasure in not
only playing the game up until well into his 60's (with the Ebb Tide rugby
club in Victoria) but throwing his weight around (!) back in his
"prime" days at HMCS Stadacona. The house at Olympic View Drive in
Victoria was also filled with old VCR tapes of Welsh victories past and a few
present as he was a rabid supporter of the Red Dragons! Robert was also an
active runner and was a bit of a pioneer back in the 70's and 80's and could
be seen in midwinter running across the MacDonald bridge to work at 6:30 in
the morning. For the past 30 plus years Bob and Barbara have resided in
Victoria and gave thanks every day for their little piece of paradise in
Metchosin. With a spectacular view, great neighbors and endless tasks to add
to his daily 'to do' lists Bob and Barbara led a fulfilled retirement that
included many excursions abroad and plenty of puttering around the house.
Robert is predeceased by his daughter Jacqueline and is survived by his wife
of 54 years Barbara (Victoria BC), sons Gareth (Carolyn) and Peter (Ruth) and
grandsons Jack and David all of Halifax. A celebration of Robert's life will
take place Wednesday March 7th at Naden Wardroom, Signal Hill at the end of
Esquimalt Road, Victoria from 1:30-3:30. The family would like to thank all of
the support given to Barbara and Bob over these past few months by their
neighborhood and Naval friends and the fine staff at the Vancouver Island
Health Authority. (Victoria Times-Colonist 06 Mar 2012)

MATHESON, Duncan Leslie, Lt
(N),
C.F. (1961-2005) - son of Donald (Bud) and
Patricia Matheson, was a quiet hero. In his uniquely elusive way, without ever
saying much, he went about his business of making this world a better place.
To those who knew him well, Duncan's heroism was very private. His presence in
our lives brought us laughter and joy and strong sense of belonging to an
extended family that was very special in so many ways. In exchange for his
commitment to his family and friends, Duncan was unconditionally loved and
supported by everyone he knew. For those whom he never met - the citizens of
Canada for whom he worked and the citizens of countries in the Middle East
where he was stationed on peacekeeping missions - he was an anonymous hero.
They never knew, and will never know, how his actions contributed to their
ability to live their lives with safety and security. Day after day, year
after year, Duncan committed his life to those around him. From the time that
he was a small child, he was caring and giving and loving. No request for
support was ever turned down. No call was ever left unanswered. No detail was
ever missed. He was always there for all of us. And for this, we love him more
dearly than we can express in words. Duncan enrolled in the Naval Reserve in
1985, after graduating with a BA from the University of Saskatchewan. In June
of 1988, he was transferred to the Regular Force as an Acting Sub-Lieutenant
and was posted to Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt, where he conducted training
at Venture Naval Officer Training Centre and on the HCMS PORTE DE LA REINE and
the HMCS MACKENZIE. In 1989, Duncan was promoted to Sub-Lieutenant and was
posted to the Canadian Forces Fleet School at Canadian Forces Base Halifax. He
reached his present rank of Lieutenant (N) in 1991. Over the course of his
distinguished career, Duncan served and trained in Maritime Forces Atlantic on
the ships HMCS PROTECTEUR, PRESERVER, TERRA NOVA, AND FREDERICTON, Canadian
Forces Station Shelbourne, the Acoustic Data Analysis Centre and the Canadian
Forces Naval Operations. While with HMCS PROTECTEUR he was deployed as part of
Operation FRICTION to the Arabian Gulf (January to April 91). During his five
years on HMCS FREDERICTON, as the Command and Control Information Systems
Officer and Officer of the Watch, he was deployed to the Former Republic of
Yugoslavia on Operation SHARP GUARD (December 1995 to March 1996) and as a
Military Observer to Lebanon as part of the United Nations Truce Supervision
Organization (January to August 1999). In 2002, Duncan was posted to
Esquimalt, BC, where he served on board the HMCS CALGARY. January 2003 brought
his final posting to Ottawa as an Operations Watch Officer within the National
Defence Command Centre, where he was responsible for maintaining contact with
all deployed Canadian Forces units and keeping the leadership of the Canadian
Forces informed. Duncan was a great uncle, a great brother, a great son, a
great friend, a great athlete, a great intellect, and a great officer. He was
a great man. And he was our very own hero. Duncan's immediate family will miss
him very, very much - mother, Pat Matheson; brother and sister-in-law, Doug
and Sandie Matheson with their children, Foster and Emma; sister, Lisa
Matheson, Michael Healey and their children, Ronan and Calen; special friend
Karen Bash; and extended family, Mark, Mike, Murray and Heather Hinds. And to
all the others that loved Duncan in your own private way, you are his family
as well, and we share the pain of your loss and know that you will miss him as
deeply. Visitations will be held on Thursday, April 14 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
and Friday, April 15 from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the McEvoy-Shields Funeral
Home, 1411 Hunt Club Rd., Ottawa, ON (613) 737-7900. The funeral will take
place on Friday, April 15 at 3:00 p.m. at CFB Uplands Base Chapel, Ottawa. In
lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Foster Parents Plan Canada or the

MOLDE, Marvin S. - Passed
away peacefully in his home on Sunday, February 23, 2014 in the company of his
devoted wife, Sandra (Cindy). Marvin was born on May 30, 1950 in Moose Jaw,
Saskatchewan and raised in Chaplin. The best town in the world to grow up in
he said. Upon graduating from high school he worked in the mines in Thompson,
Manitoba and then joined the Royal Canadian Navy. Being a Radar Plotter he
spent all of his service years at sea and saw a lot of the world. But that
changed when he married Cindy in 1975. He decided that he wanted to be home
more and left the Navy to move to Brooklin, Ontario and commence work at Lasco
Steel (Gerdau), retiring in 2012. He was a proud member of the United
Steelworkers and valued his Union brothers. In 1998 he moved to Little
Britain, Ontario and loved his house by the lake. Marvin was predeceased by
his father, Seigfreid and will be terribly missed by his loving mother,
Margaret of Chaplin, Saskatchewan. Beloved brother of Rosalind Sinclair (Dale)
and uncle to Celine Hicks (Kurt) and Jesse Scandrett (Kathy) of Saskatchewan.
Marvin is survived by his four step-children, Vicki Gilbert, Jon Price
(Lorraine), Peter Price and Sandee-lee Hillier (Derrick). Marv adored his
grandchildren and they will miss him so very much: Darla Price (James), Linda
Jane Babineau (Colin) Rachel Wittenburg (Scott), Roth Gilbert, Clifton Price,
Rebecca Parker and Rob Parker. He was extremely proud of his
great-granddaughter, Taylor Hughes and was looking forward to her spending
time at our house in the fall when she starts college in this area. He is also
survived by his great-grandsons, Joshua and Flynn Vivian and his
great-granddaughter Ava Lane. Marvin's family would like to express enormous
gratitude to Dr. Petrella, of Sunnybrook Cancer Centre, Dr. Koreru and Deb of
Lakeridge Hospital for their care over the past 3 years. His wife would
especially like to thank Community Care, especially Michael, Patty, Heather
and Kathy, who made it possible for him to remain home. We would also like to
thank Cindy's co-workers for allowing her to come and go as the need arose,
generously filling her shifts. Heather and Murray Story have been such good
friends, coming at the drop of a hat to help, even at 3 a.m. Visitation 7 to 9

MURRAY, Douglas Charles, LCdr
- 65, New Glasgow, passed away August 25, 2014 at home, surrounded by
those he loved. Born in Kingston, Ontario on November 10, 1948, he was a son
of Ronald Charles Murray and Geneva Rachel (Holland) Murray. He is survived by
his wife of 21 years, Patricia Bland; his son, Nikita Duggan (Leisha Carrier),
Burlington; step-daughters: Meghan Elizabeth Chapman, Hamilton; and Katrina
Leigh Chapman, Victoria; brother, David (Donna), Calgary; sisters: Angela
Aragona, Mississauga; Nancy (Len), Courtney; Julia, Belleville; sister-in-law,
Dianne, Foxbrook; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by
his parents and his brothers Donald and Daniel. He attended Queens University
but did not graduate as his love of “booze, broads and bridge” exceeded
his devotion to academics. He was in the navy from 1968-1995 and served in HMC
Ships Preserver and Assiniboine (Halifax), Qu’Appelle and Restigouche
(Victoria), and Nipigon (Halifax) as well as in Canadian Forces Fleet School,
Halifax; Maritime Command Headquarters, Halifax and 1st Canadian Submarine
Squadron Headquarters, Halifax as shore based Headquarters Commanding Officer.
Following his retirement, he was a full-time parent for several years, earning
his nickname of “Mother Doug”, and then worked part-time for Nautilus
Aquatics and Hobbies and Design Group Displays. He was a dedicated wine maker
and consumer and was known for calling passers-by up onto the front porch for
a glass of wine. Doug was a charmer who had a special way with people and
pets. He chatted up everyone he met and especially loved talking to women. He
had so many foibles that amused and charmed us all. No-one did denim like
Doug, and he couldn’t resist organizing everyone and everything in his wake.
The day before he died he was giving instructions on what time supper should
be served, to accommodate his mother-in-law, and it was clear our scheduling
wasn’t cutting the mustard. He loved to travel and had a passion for life,
especially the little things that so many of us don’t notice. He was the
official researcher, organizer and photographer of all family vacations,
holidays and get-togethers. He revelled in recent trips to England, Egypt,
Jordan and Turkey and never missed an opportunity to have fun (preferably with
wine glass in hand). An avid model railroader and World War I airplane buff,
he organized the Shearwater Hobby Show for many years and was active in the
Maritime Federation of Model Railroaders and the Sackville Memorial Trust. He
spent much of the last year building a model railway in his hobby room. It was
a standing joke that, no matter what tools or equipment anyone needed, it was
“in the hobby room” and, darn me, it always was! He had more useful stuff
in that room than many people have in their entire house. He was an inveterate
problem solver and could always come up with an ingenious solution to suit any
challenge. He was a wonderful man who will be missed by so many people! We
have only lived in New Glasgow for a little over three years, but will be
forever grateful for the kindness and support we have received from friends,
neighbours, co-workers and health care providers during Doug’s final
journey. Visitation 6-8 p.m. Wednesday in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New
Glasgow, from where a Celebration of Life will take place at 4 p.m. Thursday,
with Rev. Dr. Glen Matheson officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be
made to the Aberdeen Palliative Care Society, New Glasgow.

PLOURD, Lindy Merlin (Len)
- (1951-2012) age 61, which came to a peaceful end in the early morning of Nov. 10, 2012, at
the Prince Edward Palliative Care Unit in Charlottetown. Len put up a valiant
fight from injuries sustained many years ago while serving with the Royal
Canadian Navy. On Oct. 23, 1969, at 8:20 a.m., the HMCS Kootenay was in the
North Atlantic when there was an engine room explosion and fire - nine seamen
lost their lives, others were seriously injured, many with Len, trapped in the
cafeteria full of thick black smoke and flames. The survivors suffered PTSD,
as well as long-term physical and medical difficulties. Len was transferred to
CFB Summerside, Slemon Park, to await a transfer to a different ship - around
the same time his future wife Cora moved to the base. It was love at first
sight - they met Jan. 16, 1970, engaged Feb. 7 before Len was transferred back
to sea duty. Len and Cora were married on Dec. 19, 1970. In early 1971, Len
was medically discharged from RCN and moved to his home town Lethbridge, Alta.
Len and Cora enjoyed their early married life and many friends in Lethbridge
and then moved on to Cora's home province Prince Edward Island in the summer
of 1993. Len was an easygoing man with a great smile and laugh, always willing
to help anyone in need. He was a terrific husband, supportive partner to his
wife of 42 years, loyal friend and a committed pet "dad" to Niki,
Freddie, and Sassy. Left to treasure his memory are his wife Cora (Nicholson)
Plourd, his brothers Paul (Gail), Coalhurst, AB, Trevor (Carolyn), Lethbridge,
AB; sister Shelley (Conner), Calgary, AB; Aunt Ev Plourd (Victoria, BC). Len
will be missed by in-laws Alan and Jan Nicholson (Regina, SK), Blair and Barb
Nicholson (Ottawa, ON); Cynthia Nicholson, (Mt. Pearl, NF) and a host of
nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews. Len adopted PEI as home
including Nicholson relatives Dave and Paula and Ron and Mary Duchesne, Mrs.
