ALLEN, Weldon Warren - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Weldon Warren Allen 93, of Martin's Brook Lunenburg on Dec. 27, 2015. Weldon was surrounded by family and friends. Weldon was born February 5th, 1922 in Murray Corners NB., he was the son of Clara and Marvin Allen. Weldon served in WWII in the Royal Canadian Navy, as a Chief Petty Officer 1st class. He saw action in the Battle of the Atlantic where he served on anti submarine frigate Stone Town escorting convoy ships. He continued his naval career after the war and continued service at sea, on such ships as aircraft carrier, HMCS Bonaventure and Cruiser HMCS Quebec. He was demobilized from the navy in 1945. Weldon was then hired by the Department of Transport Marine Branch and his job was maintaining lighthouses until 1950. Weldon joined the Royal Canadian Navy Permanent Force in 1950 and was demobilized in 1964. Weldon built and ran a business in Lunenburg for over 30 years, the Dolphin Tavern where he made many friends. He had a long career as a champion power boat racer, designing and building his own boats and hydroplanes. He won the Canadian Championship five times between 1973-1979. He raced in the world championship in Valleyfield Quebec during EXPO '67. In 1973 he set the Canadian speed record. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #23, UnityLodge #4 of the Masonic Order, the Conservative Party and the Baptist Church. Weldon's physical strength, intelligence, determination and ingenuity shaped his entire life and he remained mentally sharp right up to his last days, saying good bye to many family members and friends. Weldon was predeceased by his wife Marie Spencer Allen in 2008 and is survived by a large family: six children: Dr Carol Pye , Halifax , Ron ( Judy) Dayspring, Laurie Lunenburg County, Nancy Allen Rogers, Lunenburg, Elizabeth Powers, Lunenburg and Sherry ( Jake ) Wheeler, Mahone Bay. He leaves eleven grandchildren: Gregory and Christopher Allen, Andrea Hilchie Pye, Cody Allen-Romkey, Katelyn Bourgoin, Joshua, Emily, Julia and Sarah Powers and Jordan and Emma Wheeler, and two great grandchildren Alexander and Erika Hilchie Pye. Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg, where friends are invited to share their memories of Weldon with his family during visitation on Friday, January 1, 2016 from 7-9 pm. A service to celebrate Weldon's life will be held Saturday, January 2, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Faith Baptist Chapel, Centre, Pastor Steven Hiltz officiating. Internment to follow at a later date. The family would like to thank the wonderful nursing staff at the South Shore Regional Hospital and Dr. Heather Robertson as well as private caregivers from Heart to Heart Home Care who's dedication to Weldon will not be forgotten. AYER, Gardner (Bud) - (10 Sep 1939 - 05 Sep 2015) - age 75 years of Lantz, passed away peacefully at home following a lengthy battle with COPD. Bud was born in Ayer's Cliff, Quebec on September 10, 1939. He was the son of the late Arlington and Dorothy (Carr) Ayer and was the 5th generation descendant of Thomas Ayer who settled the area in 1799. Bud was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather (Grumpy), uncle, brother, & friend. His love of family was seconded by his love of airplanes and the Fairey Firefly which he spent many hours rebuilding with the Shearwater Aviation Museum. Bud spent 31 years in the RCN Naval Air branch serving at Shearwater and Pat Bay. He sailed with HMCS Bonaventure, HMCS Protector & HMCS Preserver. Left with fond and loving memories are his wife of 55 years Carol (nee Hardy); children Vicki, Rick (Becky), Judy Ayer-Thoms (Chris), David (Miriam); nine grandchildren; four great grandchildren; sister Judith Brooks; brother Michael (Julie); also by a large circle of family and friends. In keeping with his wishes cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held at the Shearwater Aviation Museum (34 Bonaventure St, Shearwater) at 2pm on Thursday, September 10, 2015. BARTON, Alfred Michael (Buckey) - 71, Hatchet Lake, passed away peacefully Thursday, June 28, 2007, at home, surrounded by his loving family. Born January 12, 1936, in New Waterford, he was a son of the late John and Cleophais (Mullins) Barton. Buckey worked with the Royal Canadian Navy and then went on to work with Canadian Naval Auxiliary Vessels as a Ship's Captain, retiring in 1983. He and Kathleen were members of Submarine Squadron in Halifax. Buckey is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, the former Kathleen Marie Smith; daughters, Bonnie Hiltz (Gary McKinnon), Halifax; Terri-Ann (Dale) Winfield, Edmonton, Alta.; sons, Michael, Hatchet Lake; Blair, Edmonton, Alta.; grandchildren, Jaime and Grant; sisters, Ruth (Fred) Poirier, Sydney River; Connie Barton (Jim), Brantford; brothers, Thomas, Ontario; John (Rita), Mount Hope, Ont., and several nieces and nephews. CARVER, Robert James, P2ET, 18383-E, RCN / C.A.F. (served 19 Sep 1952 - 18 Sep 1977) - Born: February 14, 1935, Victoria, British Columbia. With sad and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Robert James Carver, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great- grandfather, on Thursday, December 17, 2015 at the age of 80 years. Robert proudly served in the Royal Canadian Navy for 25 years and was a veteran of the Korean War. After his career in the Navy, Robert was a safety superintendent and Fire Chief for the Hinton Pulp Mill for 16 years before his retirement. Robert was an active member of the Freemasons for 35 years at the Hinton Lodge #178 and Carstairs Lodge #20. Robert enjoyed travelling, golfing, camping and in his later years developed a passion for playing the bodhran with the Prairie Mountain Fiddlers. Most of all, Robert cherished his ever growing family. Along with his loving wife Katherine, Robert is survived by his children, Roberta (Wayne) Zabel of Victoria, BC, Nancy (Shawn) Edwards of Airdrie, AB, and Robert (Charlene) Carver of Innisfail, AB; grandchildren, Leroy (Kelly) Zabel, Kyle (Samantha) Edwards, Darren (Laura) Zabel, Shane (Kate) Edwards, Emily Zabel, Sam Carver, Sarah Carver; and great- grandchildren, Loreena and Rebecca, Ella, Declan and Caelum, Eli, Lily and Ivy, Emma and Noah, and Lewis and Libby. CLEGG, Timothy Allan Stephenson (Tim), PO2 - Age 46, of Sackville, NS - it is with great sadness, that we announce the passing of Tim on November 6, 2015 after a well-fought battle with Multiple Myeloma. Tim was born November 18, 1968 in Windsor, Ontario; grew up in Riverside and attended Walkerville Collegiate, as his dad did before him. Tim was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Navy for over 24 years as a Naval Communicator serving on many ships and at various shore postings on both coasts. He will be remembered by many for his fierce love of sports, playing hockey from the time he was 4 years old until his sickness; watching his beloved Montreal Canadiens; staying loyal to his favorite football team the Detroit Lions, no matter how many times they lost; and following the Toronto Blue Jays. He was a Saxophone player in the Scarlet Brigade Marching Band in the early 1980’s and during that time he marched in the Calgary Stampede, the Orange Bowl and Disney World Main Street Parades and attended many competitions in both Canada and United States. Loving husband of Sondra (van der Borch); father of Jordan Savin Kristinovich (Chicago, IL); Caitlin (Jeff Fabre) and Danielle (Julian Makary) both at home. He will be dearly missed by his mother, Helen Gail Clegg; sisters Andrea (Bob) Bodchon, and Robin (Gary) Williams. Dear uncle of Brendan (Kelly) Burke, Kevin Burke, Maxwell Williams and Lauren Williams and great uncle of Donovan Burke (all of Windsor, ON). Only son-in-law to Marcel and Carol van der Borch (Kingston, NB); missed by sister-in-law Michele van der Borch (Truro, NS); and fondly remembered by extended family and friends across Canada. CONRAD, Donald Edward, CPO.SG - Age 71, of Grand Lake, passed away suddenly, yet peacefully, with his wife by his side on December 31, 2015. Born in Wawota, Sask., he was a son of the late Edward and Bertha Conrad. Donald joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1963, and was sent to Cornwallis for training. Through his 33 years in the Navy, he had many postings, including numerous sea postings - HMCS Huron, HMCS Fraser, HMCS Restigouche, HMCS Ottawa, and HMCS Halifax - which took him around the world. Upon his retirement from the Navy in 1996, Donald joined the Commissionaires and worked at the Ammunitions Depot at the Bedford Magazine until his second retirement in 2008. He enjoyed watching sports, especially hockey, baseball and curling; in his earlier years he spent many years playing both baseball and curling. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister,-Vera. He is survived by his loving wife, Faith (Rose); his children, Douglas (Carla), Elmsdale; Sandra,-Halifax; his brother, Herb (Debra) Conrad, Shaunovan, Sask.; brother-in-law, Ron (Eleanor) Rose, Ottawa,-Ont.; nieces and nephews in Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. (Butch) (08 Sep 1958 - 18 Dec 2015) - It is with great sadness that the family of Keith "Butch" R W Cowden announces his passing on Friday December 18, 2015 after a brave battle, at the age of 57 years. Butch will be missed but lovingly remembered by his wife Deborah, his children, Terrina and Michelle and his granddaughter Briella, whom "Goopa" adored. Butch will also be fondly remembered by his mother Juanita (Paul), father Keith Sr. (Betty), his sisters, Wendy (Bill) and Tammie (Kevin) and brothers Jimmy (Joey) and Willy (Leonie), his stepchildren Jennifer, Chris (Sara) as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends. Butch was predeceased by his sister Beverly. Butch enjoyed his 26 year career as a Marine Engineer in the Royal Canadian Navy; he retired in 2007 as a Chief Petty Officer and was no nonsense, gets it done kind of guy. He continued his career as a well respected Mechanical Engineer until his passing. At Butch's request there will not be a service. DALY, Brendan George (Dan) - It is with great sadness that the family of Brendan George Daly (Dan) 80, of Dartmouth announce his peaceful passing at home on May 22, 2013. He was born on October 4, 1932 in Montreal, son of the late Frank and Alice (Queripel) Daly. Brendan left Montreal at the age of 18 to join the Royal Canadian Navy, serving for 26 years, as a submariner he rose to Chief Petty Officer 1st Class. He then joined the Department of National Defence Naval Engineering Unit (NAD) retiring in 1995. Brendan was a daily communicant at St. Clements Church and is a Charter Member of the Knights of Columbus Council 8831. He will be sadly missed and never forgotten. He is survived by his wife Rosemary, sister Pat Difiore (Robert), Los Angeles, daughters Brenda MacLeod (Rob), Quispamsis, Shannon Welsh (Darren), Dartmouth, stepsons Eamonn McKee (Jacinta), Brendan McKee (Louise), and Paul McKee (Fiona), Ireland; grandchildren Kyle, Michael, Erin and Brendan, Canada, Eion, Emma, Olivia, Sean, Cara, Conor and Eva, Ireland. DOWNIE, Robert E.  (Bob) - 58, Windsor, passed away Friday, January 24, 2003, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Bob was born in London, Ont., and raised by his grandparents, Robert and Mildred Downie. Robert's career spanned many years and he achieved high respect amongst his peers. He sailed on most destroyers and submarines in the navy and instructed at CFB Stadacona, Halifax. He received many honours and certificates in his 28 year career and retired from the navy as Chief Petty Officer. He sailed on the Provider, Ojibwa, Onondaga, Okanogan, Athabaskan, Halifax, as well as the Cormorant. He was stationed at CFB Stadacona, London and Cornwallis. He is survived by his loving wife, Donna Marie (Sharples), Sydney and Windsor; sons, Robert, Dartmouth; Victor, Dartmouth. He was predeceased by grandparents, Robert and Mildred Downie; stepmother, Mary Downie. Cremation has taken place. No visitation by request and a private memorial service to be held at a later date. DUNN, George Edward Joseph (04 Oct 1925 - 01 Jan 2016) - WWII Veteran, Naval Seaman - Peacefully, surrounded by family, at the Perley Rideau Veterans Health Centre in Ottawa, in his 91st year. Beloved husband for more than 60 years of the late Doreen Dunn (Delaney). Much loved father of Michael (Carol Lea), Patrick (Jacinthe), and Bev. FALCONER, William (23 Nov 1927 - 07 Jan 2012) - 84, Cow Bay, NS. Passed away peacefully at the Halifax Infirmary with his family by his side on Jan 07, 2012. Born in Strathmore Que. William was the son of the late William P. Falconer and Catherine (Miller) and stepmother Mary Claire (Blain) He was predeceased by his wife Janet Lenore (Osborne) and brother Joseph Paul. William is survived by his Sons William (Janet Bellefontaine) Cow Bay NS, Karl (Rosemary King) Cow Bay NS and Daughter Colette (Robert Day) Porters Lake NS. Grandchildren; Tracey, Cheryl, Courtney, Megan, Nicole and Alex William severed as a Merchant seaman during the Second World War, later joined the Navy and was an active naval reservist after retiring from the regular forces. William enjoyed working with his hands. He was the manager of a large appliance repair shop and opened a small gas engine repair business. After retirement, Bill enjoyed woodworking, woodcarving and model boat building. He especially enjoyed the challenge of building boats in bottles. Bill enjoyed a good crib game and even with age he still didn't miss a point or a play. William was a member of Wentworth Masonic Lodge #108 and enjoyed the fellowship when able to attend. William was well respected and loved by family and friends and will be greatly missed. The family would like to thank the care givers that assisted with Bills care over the years. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be from 6 until 9 PM, Jan 10 and the memorial service will be held at 1PM Jan 11 at Atlantic Funeral Homes in Westfall. There will be a Masonic service held at 7PM on the 10th to which all are invited and visitation will continue following the brief service. Burial will take place at a later date. FISHER, Robert Howard (Bob) - 54, Lower Sackville, died May 31, 1996, in Victoria General Hospital. He was a son of the late Albert and Jean Fisher. He enlisted in the navy in 1958, retiring in 1993 as a second class Petty Officer. The last ship he served on was the HMCS Iroquois. He was a member of the Halifax Curling Club. Surviving are his wife, the former Faith Lenora Bobbitt; son Mark Robert, at home; brothers, Orville, Neil, California. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service 3 p.m. Monday in Atlantic Funeral Home chapel, 125 Sackville Dr., Rev. Conon David Reid officiating. Burial in Oakridge Memory Gardens, Lower Sackville. No flowers by request. FLEGG, Bruce, Radar Plotter, RCN - At the Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital, surrounded by the love of his family, on Wednesday, November 16, 2011, Bruce went home to be with his Lord and Saviour, after a courageous 2 year battle with esophageal cancer at the age of 70. FOREST, J.H. (Rocky) - Rocky was born in 1921 on the family farm in LaSalle, Manitoba. He was the fourth of nine children born to Métis and French parents Elise and Gabriel Forest. He attended the one-room Barkham schoolhouse where he acquired the first of his nicknames: "Harry". He attended high school in neighbouring St. Norbert. Following high school he worked underground in a gold mine in Northern Manitoba - and it was there he acquired the nickname that would stick with him forever: "Rocky". In 1940 Rocky enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy. He trained in St. Hyacinthe, Quebec and then served on both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans until the end of the Second World War. Returning home as a commissioned naval officer, Rocky used his Serviceman's Grant to build a new home on the family farm for his parents and younger siblings. Near the family farm was the one-room schoolhouse that Rocky had attended in his youth. It was there that he met the beautiful and intelligent, young new teacher Jean Janz who was then instructing Rocky's younger siblings. Jean would quickly become the love of his life and his wife of 69 years. Having first seen the Rocky Mountains on a Navy transfer during the war, he knew he wanted to move west to Alberta. Rocky and Jean were married in Manitoba on December 21, 1946 and set off for Edmonton to begin their new life together. Rocky had apprenticed in carpentry and when he worked at Poole Construction Ltd. (PCL) he developed many friendships that were to last a lifetime. Alberta had recently drilled its first successful oil well. Ever the visionary, Rocky saw the opportunity for growth and struck out on his own. Forest Construction Ltd. was established in 1952. He grew his business and eventually competed against the much larger PCL for construction contracts. It's an interesting story of good things going full circle. Nearing Forest Construction's 50th anniversary, the company was sold to PCL. A match 50 years in the making. Competitors often.....Friends always. Rocky's first construction contract was the building of the Assumption Catholic Church in Edmonton - the first of dozens of churches he would eventually build. As his company grew, so did the size of his projects. Forest Construction Ltd. would eventually build over 700 hundred major buildings in Alberta and British Columbia including schools, offices, shopping centers, arenas, condominium towers, hotels, hospitals, airports, warehouses and industrial buildings. Rocky led several industry associations and served on the Advisory Council to the Federal Business Development Bank. A growing economy, a growing business..... and a growing family. Over the years, Rocky built ever larger homes in Edmonton to accommodate his growing clan. In the end, seven children and great wife make a family. Life was good and he eventually built a summer cottage on Lake Wabamun where he taught his and his neighbours' children to sail and water ski. Rocky loved kids, and home was a good place to be. Rocky was one of seven founding partners of Jas-Day Investments Ltd. and built the Lobstick Lodge in his beloved Rocky Mountains so that more Canadian families could enjoy "his" special mountain range. His friendships in Jasper National Park would endure for decades and the business grew to become today's Mountain Park Lodges hotel chain. Rocky happily taught many kids to ski at Marmot Basin, the ski resort in Jasper that the Mountain Park Lodges Group would eventually be partners in. Rocky was an active member in his church and in the wider community as a founding member of The Marion Centre and of the Edmonton Community Foundation. He was a board member of both the Misericordia Hospital and of CUSO (Canadian University Students Overseas), Chairman of Edmonton Catholic Charities, and President of The United Way. His encouragement of the arts was recognized with his appointment as Honorary Director of Edmonton's Citadel Theatre. Of particular note was Rocky's support for women and children in need - long before this type of support became fashionable. He was a founder of the registered nonprofit society WINGS of Providence: "Women-In-Need-Growing-Stronger". Rocky initially spearheaded a volunteer project to obtain an apartment building and convert it into a safe haven for women and children escaping family violence. Wings has since grown to provide second stage housing, longer term housing, and a beautiful licensed daycare. It's a rare man who gets a children's daycare named after him - especially when that daycare is part of a shelter for women fleeing family violence. Wings surprised Rocky with this honour two years ago. He also had a special place in his heart for the needs of religious sisters. He donated countless hours and dollars to building their convents, schools, chapels, and the spiritual retreat centers they operated for the community's benefit. A project dear to Rocky's heart was the development and construction of a beautiful monastery west of Edmonton for the Carmelite Sisters, who upon its completion came from all over the world to quietly live and pray in Alberta. Rocky and Jean retired to a lovely condo in downtown Edmonton that Forest Construction built, but soon he would fulfill his lifelong dream of living on the West Coast. Who else but Rocky Forest would have the energy to move out of a retirement residence, change provinces, and buy a heritage fixer-upper in Victoria that would take him a full two years to restore! Rocky was a fabulous gardener and a true artist. His intricate and realistic bird carvings are the centerpieces of his children's homes. He was a 50-year supporter of his beloved Edmonton Eskimos Football Club and a long time patron of the Edmonton Opera. In addition to numerous local and industry awards, in 1992 Rocky was one of 25 people to receive The Canadian Citation For Citizenship. At the time of his death Rocky was encircled by his devoted wife Jean and several of their children. Joseph Hyacinthe "Rocky" Forest will be dearly missed by his faithful wife Jean who referred to him as "My Rock". She tirelessly and brilliantly cared for him, cherished him and kept him happy and laughing. She "loved the health and longevity right into him". GILLESPIE, Douglas Reid CPO1 (Doug) (the Cat Man) - Sailed away December 8, 2002. Born in Bulwark, Alta., November 16, 1934, he was a son of the late John Donald Gillespie and Francis Alma Reid. He joined the RCN in 1952, at the age of 17, his first draft was aboard HMCS Cape Breton as an engineering apprentice. He eventually attained the position of CERA in the Marine Engineering Department and proudly wore his trade badge until retiring from the CAF in 1988, dedicating 36 of his years to the uniform. He continued his passion for the ships of the Canadian Armed Forces while employed with General Motors, installing and maintaining Allison Gas Turbines on Iroquois class ships. Retiring from GM at 65 years young, he formed Gillespie Gas Turbine as an independent contractor and carried on with his life's work. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; sister, Faith (Bill) Checkei; son, Donald and his wife Linda Taggart; daughters, Susan and her husband Serge Belanger, Patricia and her husband Evon Los. Doug was graced with grandchildren, Donnie and Kelly Gillespie, Daniel and Deanne Belanger, Alexander, Nikkie and Kathryn Los; nieces and nephew, Sandy, Lori, Dougie. (29 Mar 1942 - 27 Feb 2004) - It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Fred Glover, age 61, on Friday, February 27, 2004 at the Ottawa General Hospital. GOW, Francis Robert Williams Roberts, Cdr, RCN, died 08 Nov 1942, HMCS STADACONA - Born 11 May 1899, Halifax, NS son of Dr. Francis A. R. and of Mabel Gow, of Greenwich, NS; husband of Jean M. Gow, of Victoria, BC.

Commander F. R. W. Gow was killed when he was a passenger travelling on duty in a plane on route from Sydney, Nova Scotia to Torbay, Newfoundland. The wreckage of the plane was found but Commander F. R. W. Gow was not recovered.

Halifax Officers Passengers On Missing RCAF Plane Wide Search For Aircraft Is Continued

Left Dartmouth for Newfoundland on Sunday Five In Missing Craft - Senior Naval Officer Cmdr. Gow is senior officer of harbor defences of the Atlantic Coast Command. A native of Halifax, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1914 and in January 1917, went to sea , serving with cruisers of the Royal Navy. After the war, as a Sub-Lieutrnant, he continued to serve aboard British cruisers of the British North American and West Indies Squadron. He served some years with naval intelligence and in 1927 became executive officer of HMCS Patrician, a Canadian Destroyer. Later, he commanded HMCS Festubert. Before and after his term of duty aboard HMCS Festubert in 1934-35, he served again with Naval intelligence. At the outbreak of the war, he was Assistant to the director of Naval Intelligence at Naval Service Headquarters at Ottawa. In 1939, he was appointed extended defence officer for the Atlantic Coast Command and later was named senior officer of harbor defences for the same command. 

     Those reported missing Sunday, the plane Piloted by PO W.G. Harber of Midland, Ont, was ferrying two army officers, Lt.-Col Arnold H. Ernst, of Halifax, and Maj. H.B. Munro of Halifax, as well as naval officer, Cmdr. F.R.W.R. Gow of Halifax and a member of the RCAF, FO H.M. Army of Montreal. (Lt.-Col. Ernest, was a native of Lunenburg). GREENWOOD, Joseph Carl - Our beloved Joe passed away peacefully and rather unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 29, 2013, in the VG Site QEII, with his wife at his side. He remained an optimist to his very last breath, joking with his wife and his doctors, and discussing treatment options, only minutes before his passing. Born in Stouffville, Ontario, on August 3, 1939, he was the son of the late Richard "Al" and Isabelle (Ashenhurst) Greenwood. The lights in our world were dimmed and our hearts are heavy with sorrow. He leaves to mourn his loving wife of 52 years, Thelma (Fox); the best daughter possible, Kelly Greenwood; a terrific son-in-law, Karl Penney; and his much loved and adored grandchildren, Kyle and Kira Penney, who brought great joy to his life. He was an active and proud grandfather and followed their many achievements, both scholastic and on sports fields for baseball, soccer, and golf, on ice rinks for hockey, ringette and curling and all of their summer activities at the Waegwoltic Club. He rejoiced in all their successes. He is also survived by siblings Beth Hannah, John Greenwood (both of Ontario) and Bob Greenwood (of BC), one niece and 6 nephews. Joe started his career in the Canadian Armed Forces (Navy), training as an electrician and serving on many ships including the Bonaventure. He retired from the Navy early and joined Wesco as a salesman, and was promoted to Branch Manager position within a few years. His entrepreneurial spirit propelled him to open his own business as a Manufacturers' Agent, which he operated successfully for many years before retiring. A calm and wise man, he had a determined and unwavering positive outlook and strength of will. Always a gentleman, he faced the last few months with dignity and grace, was kind and caring and in the face of adversity was a pillar of strength. To have him as a husband, father and grandfather was to win the lottery of life. He left us with love in our hearts and great memories to last forever. Through all of us he will live on. He was a long-time member of the CFB Halifax Curling Club; a former Lion; a member of Keith's Masonic Lodge; a 38 year member of the Royal Canadian Legion, mostly at Scotia Branch, and then more recently at the Fairview Branch; a 31 year member of the Ashburn Golf Club, and he especially enjoyed his activities and friendships in the past few years with the GASPERS. Joe was a voracious reader, catalogued all the books he had read, and still had a stack of books he wanted to read. Old-time friends will remember, and smile, at the many enjoyable activities and parties held at the cottage on Porters Lake. Joe and Thelma happily enjoyed the last 21 winters at their home in Clearwater, Florida and enjoyed many loving friendships there. Joe became actively engaged in all activities available including cruises, travel excursions, social and sports activities such as bowling, golf and especially Shuffleboard games. Through stiff competition he earned the status of a "Professional" shuffleboard player and competed very successfully with the best player Florida had to offer, from several countries. We send out sincere thanks to Dr. Gobran, the Palliative Care teams at Capital Health, the Red Cross, and the VON. Cremation has taken place under the direction of J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, (455-0531). A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, November 5 at 2 pm in the Chapel. HAMILTON, Murray Wayne Fraser, CD, Queens Jubilee Medal, Cdr, RCN(R) (14 May 1949 - 27 Nov 2015) - It's with much sadness that we announce the death of Wayne at his home in Brookside, after a brief, brave fight with cancer. Born in Summerside P.E.I he was the first son of the late Flt Sgt Murray and Minnie Hamilton. He is survived by his wife, Gerri, sons Andrew (Carli) Brookside, Sean (Emilie) Toronto, brothers Robert, Gordon (Rosemarie) & family & sister Betty Jean MacMillan (Don) & family. Wayne enlisted in the military after high school in Chatham N.B. He attended the Collège Militaire Royal de Saint-Jean and then served on HMCS MIRAMICHI, SASKATCHEWAN and OTTAWA. On leaving the regular force to return to university, he transferred to the Royal Canadian Naval Reserves and became a member of HMCS SCOTIAN. Scotian was like a second family to Wayne and he had many fond memories of the unit, such as his time as Navigation Officer and XO on HMCS Porte St. Jean and Porte St. Loius doing summer training deployments off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador. Also, his command of the PBL DETECTOR in support of the Olympic Regatta Kingston in 1976. Wayne served in various senior positions at Scotian before he was posted to an operational billet at MARCOM HQ as Naval Control of Shipping Officer, Halifax and NCSO N.S. He was then posted to Maritime Coastal Defence Halifax as Commander and then Deputy Commander MCD Maritimes. He later assumed command of Harbour Defence Unit One (HDU1) & Port Security Unit One (PSU1) as operational units within Maritime Operations Group 5. He served in numerous operations across Canada and with NATO forces as well as during events such as the G7 in Halifax and Swiss Air. He retired from active duty in 2004 after 36 years of military service. In his civilian career, Wayne taught students at Brookside Junior High, CP Allen and was VP of Timberlea Junior High. In 1985, he initiated the province-wide Students Helping African Relief Efforts project (SHARE) at Brookside Junior High. He also helped found the Canadian Council for Geographic Education in 1993, for which he was honored for excellence in geographic education by the International Council for Geographic Education in 1999. He was then seconded to Natural Resources Canada where he developed the National Educational Canadian Community Atlas project as part of the the team that placed the national atlas online. After teaching at C.P Allen, he moved to the Department of Education, Learning Resource & Technology division as an I.T consultant. He was team leader on many projects such as the Advanced Studies Program, the Canadian History 11 Online Project and developed technology plans for new school construction. He retired in 2013. Wayne was a firm believer in community. He was a founding member of the Brookside Community School, was a volunteer firefighter for 14 years and founded the District 4 Jr. Firefighters. He was an original and active member of the Brookside Homeowners Association and he helped develop such projects as Yeadon Green & Campbell Point Park. He was also Vice Chair of HRM Joint Emergency Measures Western Region & Vice Chair of the Board for the Prospect Road Recreation Association. Wayne always felt his biggest accomplishment was his life with Gerri, Andrew & Sean. He loved living on McGraths Lake in the house he built and enjoyed all it had to offer like sitting on the deck sipping a glass of wine with friends or watching the moon and sun rise over the lake. He was a motorcycle enthusiast, loved jazz, making wine, taking his students on ski trips, camping across North America with his young family and travelling the world with Gerri. Wayne's philosophy was that life was not a dress rehearsal so he lived everyday with enthusiasm and a commitment to his family, his country, his teaching career and his community. HARDY, Donald Henry - It is with great sadness that the family of Donald Henry Hardy, 81, of Lunenburg, announce his passing in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater, on Wednesday, April 28, 2010, with his family by his side. Born June 27, 1928, in North Vancouver, Don was a son of the late William and Alice (Dungate) Hardy. Don started his working career as an apprentice electrician in the shipyards of North Vancouver and joined the Royal Canadian Navy at the age of 18. At the age of 26, Don was one of the First Block Draft of submariners sent to the UK to train with the British Navy at the start of his career in submarines, serving on the Artemis, Astute, Alliance, Totem, Alcide and Ojibwa. Before joining the Submarine Service, Don served on many other Canadian Navy vessels including the Haida, Toronto, Ontario and the Bonaventure. During the time in the Navy he taught at the Submariner Training Centre, Halifax and after retirement of 25 years with the Navy, Don taught Marine Electronics at the Vocational School in Sydney, then moving on to the Department of Labour in the Labour Standards Department. Active within his community, Don was a faithful member of St. John's Anglican Church, a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 23, Lunenburg, the Admiral Desmond Piers Naval Association, the Submariners Association of Canada East, Unity Lodge No. 4, of the Masonic Order, Grace Chapter No. 8 of the Eastern Star, and the South Shore Ship Modellers Guild. In earlier years he was one of the founding members of the Martin's River Fire Department where he served as chief of the department for a number of years. Don enjoyed life and treasured special times with his family. His outgoing personality and friendliness endeared him to many and he will be greatly missed. Don is survived by his wife, the former Jean Hiltz (Wilson); children, Donald (Kasandra), Royston, B.C.; Darrell (Colleen), Lower Sackville; Cynthia (Doug), Courtenay, B.C.; Helene (Richard) Caroline, Alberta; Patrick, Red Deer, Alta.; Marina, Bridgewater; stepchildren, Patty (Derrick), Western Shore; Joy (Peter), North Sydney; and Brian of Halifax; 18 grandchildren and four great- grandchildren; sister, Sheila (Milo) Trenholm and brother, Wayne Brown in British Columbia. HENRY, Vincent, Cdr (08 Jun 1922 - 23 Aug 2007) - beloved husband of the late Dorothy Elizabeth Henry, passed away peacefully with family around him at the age of 85. His sister Ivy and brothers Lorne and Alvin predeceased him. A wonderful husband, father, granddad and great-granddad, he will be deeply missed by children Sally, Mary, David, Rob, Peggy; grandchildren Lonnie, Rhys, Scott, Alison, Venetta, Jacob, Kayla, Mark, Laura, Jeffrey, Michael; and great-grandchildren Kailey, Savannah, and Caydn. In addition, he will be missed by sister Verna and extended family in Canada and abroad, including sister in-law, cousins, nephews and niece. Following graduation (Vic High), he joined the RCN in Esquimalt in 1941 and trained at Naden, Givenchy, Stadacona, Peregrine and Niobe. Was seconded to the RN in May 1944 for service with HMS Formidable, which saw considerable action in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean and was instrumental in closing out the war in Japan. In addition, he served on Crusader in the Korean War. During his distinguished CF career of over 33 years, he held many senior staff, logistic and planning positions in Canada and England. On final posting, he completed a BA from Carleton University (1973). A highly decorated officer, years after retirement he continued to receive medals: USSR Murmansk Medal commemorating the Murmansk convoys in WW2, the UK Arctic Campaign Medal (WW2), and Cdn Peacekeeping Service Medal and Special Service Medal (NATO Bar). In 1973, he worked briefly with the Federal Gov't as Business Manager of the Beaufort Sea Project, then settled in BC with family and until 1984, was Director Personnel and Training, BC Ministry of Education, and was instrumental in creation of the Knowledge Network TV station. Subsequently, volunteered with the BC / Yukon Red Cross Society (Regional VP) until early 90s. On official" retirement, spent the next 20 years enjoying his beautiful residences in Victoria and Nanoose Bay and traveling in Canada and abroad. His final years were spent with family and friends in Victoria. To the end, he was an inspiration to all. He will be greatly missed, but never forgotten! A celebration of his life will be held 2:00pm Thursday, August 30 2007 at St. Paul's Anglican Church, 1379 Esquimalt Rd. Reception after at Naden Wardroom, 1586 Esquimalt Rd. HILLIER, Charles Henry, Lt - 58, Bedford, died October 1, 1994 in Victoria General Hospital, Halifax. Born in Portsmouth, England, he was a son of the late Charles and Gertrude (Bidgood) Hillier. He served for 15 years in the Royal Navy and 20 years with the Royal Canadian Navy spending most of his service with the submarine branch. He retired in Ottawa in 1988. He is survived by his wife, the former Barbara Brown; daughter, Sarah (Mrs. David MacIsaac), Gloucester, Ontario, two sons, Gary, David of England; a granddaughter. Cremation has taken place under the direction of T.K. Barnard Funeral Home, Bedford. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in All Saints Anglican Church, Bedford, Canon Robert Power officiating. Burial will take place at a later date at sea. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.

HLAVAY (H;AVAK), Joseph Francis (Joe) AB) - 92, of Calgary, Alberta, died Sunday, November 22, 2015. Born in Mula-Hamor, Czechoslovakia on August 4, 1923, he was a son of the late Julia and Frank Hlavoy (Hlavaj). In 1929, he migrated with his parents and older brother Steve from Hungary to Canada where the family settled on a homestead in Buck Lake, Alberta. In order to continue his education, at the age of 14 he left home to attend high school in Edmonton where he graduated in 1942. As a young graduate, Joe was employed by the U.S. Public Roads Administration to work on building the Alaska Highway. In his first job, he was a Junior Engineering Aid working on the Liard River Bridge project as an axe man, chainman, and rodman on the survey crew. Later, he worked as a rivet inspector on the steel suspension bridge. During World War II, he served in the Royal Canadian Navy on the H.M.C.S. Avalon in Newfoundland. After the war, he graduated from the University of Alberta in 1950 with a BSc in Civil Engineering. For five years, Joe worked as an engineer for Mannix Construction Company on pipelines, dams, paving, tunnels and other large projects. In 1955, starting his own business as co-founder of Brazeau River Constructors and in 1970 of Chief Construction, he made a substantial contribution to the road building and heavy construction industry in Alberta and Eastern BC. In 2007, Alberta Roadbuilders and Heavy Construction Association awarded Joe a Honorary Lifetime Membership. His professional affiliations included Alberta Roadbuilders and Heavy Construction Association (ARHCA), Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE), and Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA). Joe treasured his friendships made in Phi Kappa Pi Fraternity. Joe was a philanthropist and avid golfer, a combination that set the stage for a number of charitable endeavours. As one of the founding partners of Willow Park Golf and Country Club, he helped establish the Willow Park Charity Classic Golf Tournament in 1988 to raise funds annually for various charities in Calgary. The Association of Fund Raising Professionals awarded The Willow Park owners the Generosity of Spirit Award for their contributions to the community. Also, he was given the Peter Gzowski Award for Literacy at the Calgary PGI Golf Tournament for Literacy. In his many active years of golfing, Joe aced five holes in one. As a member of the International Seniors Amateur Golf Society (ISAGS), he played in tournaments all over the world including China, Japan, Australia, France, U.S.A., Argentina, Ireland, Mexico, Scotland, and Canada. Joe won the Super Senior division three times: 1999, Celtic Manor in Wales, 2000 in Deauville, France and 2002 in Biarritz, France. Throughout his adult life, Joe was passionate about advanced education. In 2000, as a member of the Civil Engineering Class of 1950, he helped establish the 1950 Civil Engineering Award " to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of their Graduation", all classmates at the University of Alberta and "to benefit engineering students in the next millennium to fulfil their goals and be of benefit to society." This class, made up of 16 high school graduates and 72 returning veterans from the Canadian Armed Forces of the Second World War-1939 to 1945, exemplified team spirit. A classroom was named in his honor for his generous contributions to the university. Joe is survived by his three children from his first marriage, Cathleen Caverhill, Joe A. Hlavay (Kathleen), and Susan McGough (Patrick); eight grandchildren, Janet Caverhill (Grant Mangham), Heather Caverhill, Galen Caverhill, Kimberly McGough (Mikjail Vera Navides), Christina McGough, Braden Hlavay, Brittyne Hlavay and Colten Hlavay; and great- granddaughter, Marion Grace Caverhill. He is survived also by his second wife, Sarah Inez (Sally) Wood, whom he married in 1985. Joe was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley Louise Andros of Vanderhoof, BC and his brother Steve Hlavoy (Hlavaj). A reception to celebrate Joe's life will be held on December 7, 2015 from Noon - 2:30 p.m. at The Willow Park Golf and Country Club in Calgary, Alberta. HOLLAND, Robert Samuel ( 03 Sep 1923 - 11 Jun 2013) - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Samuel Holland at the age of 89 with his family by his side at the Victoria Hospital. Bob was born in Biggar, SK to Lulu Josephine (nee Young) and William Lee Holland where he grew up with his sisters Alice and Sharon and brother Graham. He was living in Watrous when he joined the Royal Canadian Navy at the age of 18. Bob was in the Second World War from December 1941 to November 1945 where he served on a Warship named HMCS Quesnel. He returned to Canada after the war and settled in Prince Albert where he got married and started his family. He has lived in the family home for over 60 years. His chosen trade was masonry. He retired from the Penitentiary where he was mason instructor with 22 years of service. Bob was an avid golfer and curler. He enjoyed outdoor life, sports and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Bob is survived by his best friend Jean McKenna, his children, Ray (Penny), Joanne Barrett, Lance Nicols, Carol (Sandy) Smith and Vern (Judy). Bob is also survived by his grandchildren Brent (Margot) Barrett, Greg (Jessica) Barrett, Sherry (Geoff) Bishop and Amber (Devon) Kirkland, along with his 7 great grandchildren his sister Sharon Hagen and his brother Graham (Jackie) Holland along with numerous nieces and nephews. Bob was predeceased by his parents Lulu and William, his sister Alice and her husband Lorne Bradley, a son-in-law Gordon Barrett and a daughter-in-law Judy Nicols. HOWARD, Eugene Cleveland - It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Eugene Cleveland Howard, 81, of Coldbrook, Kings County, on December 15, 2015. Born July 27, 1934, in Middleton, he was the son of the late Eugene and Margaret (Kenney) Howard. He will be sadly missed by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy (Spence) Howard, his sister Gertrude (Trudy) Stachewsky, B.C., his daughter Pam (Richard) Biggs, Halifax, son in law James (Jimmy) Rose of Berwick, and his pride and joy grandchildren; Derek, Emily, Sara, Emma, Maggie and Luke. He was predeceased by his daughter Kim Rose, his brother Beverly and his brother Sinclair (in infancy). Eugene served in the navy for 26 years, retiring as Warrant Officer. During his time in the navy he sailed on the (Maggie) Magnificent, the Bonaventure, the USS Essex, and the USS Wasp. He then joined the Department of Municipal Affairs, Hants Assessment Division where he was employed for 19 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, puttering, tinkering, and being outdoors. He was the pillar for his family. "Poppy" spent many enjoyed hours watching his grandchildren; at the rink playing hockey or ringette, in a gym playing basketball, or on sidelines cheering at the soccer field. He loved to joke around and make others laugh. Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Lindsay Annapolis Valley Funeral Home and Chapels. HUDSON, John Alfred (Jake) (1926 - 2015) - John Alfred Hudson passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at the age of 89 years. Lovingly remembered by his children, Wendy (Michael Baron), Shelley Hudson, Jackson Hudson, Martin (Michelle) Hudson and Perrin (Ned Beatty); grandchildren, Erie (Brendan) Bandkowski), Brett, Jonathan, Haley, Matthew, James, Reilly, Dalles and Alden; great-grandchildren, Jake and Leo; survived by many nieces and nephews. IVANKO, Anthony (Tony) (27 Mar 1932 - 08 May 2015) - 83 of Halifax passed away peacefully on May 8, 2015 in the Halifax Infirmary. He was the son of Anna Podrazil and Andrew Ivanko. Born in Czechoslovakia in 1932, he moved to Canada in 1936. He joined the Armed Forces in 1950 stationed in Halifax where he met his loving wife, Eleanor of 61 years. His family is saddened to say good-bye to a great man, a wonderful husband, brother, father and grandfather. He spent 26 years in the navy and 15 years working as contract officer at DNA Dockyard. He spent many years involved in minor hockey, one of the original committee members organizing Spryfield Hockey and was one of the original founders of the Spryfield Junior B Hockey Club. He held various positions in the Nova Scotia Hockey Association and was Vice President for ten years. He received numerous awards for his tireless volunteer efforts. He never missed his grandchildren's hockey games. He formed lifelong friendships throughout his years involved in hockey. His compassion for others and generosity of giving his time will be missed by everyone who he touched. He loved to play golf especially in Florida and watch the Blue Jays preseason games in Florida during retirement. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor; daughter, Christine (Warren) Algee; sons, Mike (Estella, predeceased), Allan (Vanda, predeceased), (Mary LeBlanc, partner); grandchildren, David and Michael Algee, Tammy Currie and Tara Ivanko, Holly and Christopher Ivanko, and great-grandchildren, Kingsley and Cassius Algee. Born in Mahone Bay, July 6, 1930, he was a son of the late William and Carrie (Heisler) Joudrey. William served for over 28 years as a C.P.O.2 E.R. C.D.I. in the Royal Canadian Navy. Afterwards he was employed at the Dartmouth General Hospital for over 17 years as a stationary engineer. KELLEHER, James Stewart - 91, died peacefully November 24 at the Perley Rideau Veterans' Health Centre in Ottawa, surrounded by the love of his family and caregivers. Jim was born to the late Ruben and Florence "Dot" (Holmes) Kelleher, Nov. 6, 1924, in Canora, Saskatchewan. He grew up in Brandon, Manitoba, completing high school there before serving in the Royal Canadian Navy during WWII. He received his BSc in Biology from the University of Brandon, his MSc from the University of Iowa and his PhD from the University of Minnesota. He married the late Anne Evaskow in 1952 (d1975), and, after finishing his studies in 1959, they lived together in Brandon, Belleville, and Ottawa. He married the late Murielle Pepin (d2002) in 1990, and they lived in Dorval. He overwintered in Chapala, Mexico for years, spending the rest of his time with his daughters scattered across the country, or in his home town, Brandon. In 2011 Jim moved to Ottawa, where he lived his last years in dignity as a Navy Veteran in his long-term care facility. Jim was an entomologist with Agriculture Canada for 43 years and his work focused on using biological controls rather than pesticides to manage harmful insects, long before much concern about pesticide use. His work had an international scope, and for both work and pleasure he was an avid traveler, enjoying meeting new people and experiencing new cultures. Jim was a humble man of quick wit, always willing to help family and friends when they needed it most. Jim was an active member of the Catholic community wherever he lived. Jim's family always said he had nine lives, overcoming numerous challenges, including: childhood rheumatic fever, WWII Navy combat aboard the HMCS Kirkland Lake, a major penicillin reaction following treatment for a head wound received diving in the 1960's, punctured lungs and a broken sternum received as a passenger in a head-on car collision on a Montreal highway in 1990, congestive heart failure and lymphoma in 2009, and three bouts of cancer while in Ottawa in 2001, 2012 and 2014. Despite end stage dementia, his mind continued to have cognizant periods when he recognized and comforted his family and caregivers. Even in his last hour, Jim smiled and waved goodbye to those in the room. His remains were removed with military honours, and the flags at the Perley were lowered to half-mast to mark his passing. Jim is survived by three daughters, Mary Jane (Colin Leech) of Ottawa; Joyce (Dusty Williams) of Black Diamond; and Angela (Dave McIntyre) of West Vancouver; one granddaughter, Jessica (Greg) Dacyk and two great-granddaughters Logan and Hollyn all of Clear Prairie, AB; two sisters Mae Cotter, Twyla (Al) Warwaruk; two brothers Jack (Marion) and Pat (Joan); and many other relatives. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Augustine's Church, Brandon, or the Perley Rideau Veterans' Foundation, Ottawa. The funeral mass will be said by Fr Patrick Neufeld on Tuesday December 8th, 2015 at 11 a.m. at St. Augustine of Canterbury Church in Brandon, MB followed by private burial at Brandon Cemetery. KERSEY, Patrick J. - much loved husband, father of five and grandfather of twelve, left this earth on December 3, 2013 after almost ninety years of a life very well lived. Born January 7, 1924 in Halifax, Patrick began his travels early in life, moving to New York as a very young child with his family - his father Patrick, mother Beatrice and siblings Geraldine, Eileen and William. Another brother, Ben, died in infancy. It was during this time that Patrick was first recognized as someone special, winning a Most Beautiful Baby contest in the Bronx before the family returned to Halifax. As with many young people of the time, Patrick left school at an early age to find work to help support his family. After working at the Halifax Dockyard, Patrick enlisted in the Navy in 1941 at an under aged 17, serving his country till war's end on the HMCS ARVIDA and HMCS TORONTO. Following his discharge, Patrick began his career adventures, finding employ in a broad variety of industries. He picked crops in the Niagara Belt, worked for General Motors in Windsor, ON, and operated a service station in Iles de la Madeleine. Returning to Nova Scotia, Patrick sold life insurance for Prudential, and managed the Spryfield Lion's Arena before finishing his career at the Halifax Metro Centre as a Stationary Engineer. Along the way he picked up the art of skate sharpening and became known as one of the best around, with people seeking out his services from far and wide. A true mentor, Patrick guided the lives of many young people with whom he worked and interacted during his life, inspiring many to greater achievements and career goals. Patrick took up golf on retirement and spent many happy hours at Paragon playing with friends and family, even with the 11th hole. Patrick met the love of his life, Joan Sutherland, in Windsor, Ontario. Marrying in 1955, they spent the next 59 years together. It would be impossible to find a happier couple, so deeply in love and the absolute best of friends. Patrick and Joan were inseparable and forged an inspirational parental bond. Together they raised five children, all boys, with unsurpassed grace and equanimity. Whether helping to repair any of the many cars that made their way through the home driveway, or quietly reading a book in the living room beside a roiling sea of five boys, Patrick was a patient teacher and an amazing role model, exemplifying calm assurance and unequivocal support for his family. And when grandchildren began appearing, Poppa was an instant hit. Predeceased by his parents and siblings, Patrick is survived by wife Joan, Cambridge Station, sons Robert (Mary Lynn – Lauren, Hannah and Liam), Dartmouth, David (Michelle - Jack), Halifax, Bill (Linda – Patrick, Laura and Andrea), Waterloo, Ontario, Chris (Katie and Riley), Paris, Ontario, and Shawn (Nicole – Julia, Josh and Noah), Stillwater Lake - the twelve grandchildren all adored their Poppa. KILLAM, Clifford Donald (14 Mar 1942 - 19 Apr 2007) - Lower Sackville, NS, Clifford retired in 1974 as a Master Seaman in he RCN and served 10 years in the Corps of Commissioners, Halifax, N.S. He was an active member of the Submariners' Association of Canada (East) and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 95. Cliff enjoyed camping, traveling and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife, Linda; sister, Valerie Tolson (Robin) and brother-in-law, Gregory Taylor; son, Jeffrey (Ginny); two daughters, Juanita MacKenzie (Angus) and Tina Marie Reekie (Andrew); step-son, Bobby Taylor (Melissa); step-daughter, Denise Sisson (Joel); five grandchildren, Nathan, Aaron, Elizabeth, Deven and baby, Ava; two great grandchildren, Faith and Carlos; nephews, Anthony Wood (Ashlea), Rick Gomez (Jessica) and Greg Gomez (Dana); niece, Lana Wood (Patrick). KOSTAL, Joseph Wilfred (06 Nov 1935 - 03 Jan 2014) - Age 78, of Dartmouth, passed away peacefully January 3, 2014 at home. Born in Guelph, Ontario he was a son of the late Joseph and Ethel (Knox) Kostal. Beloved husband of Marie (nee: Doiron), father of Derek (Bonnie) Kostal of Halifax and Denine (Gary) Turner of Charlottetown. Devoted grandfather to Ben, Lauren and Nick, all of Halifax. Joe is survived by his four brothers Bill (Marlene), Peter (Carol), David and Stephen all of Guelph, Ontario, and numerous sister and brother-in-laws, nieces and nephews from Nova Scotia to Ontario. Joe was Chief Petty Officer with the Royal Canadian Navy for over 30 years and was stationed in various locations throughout the Maritimes, Quebec and Ontario. He returned to Halifax upon his retirement from Irving Shipbuilding (a position he held after retirement from the Navy) where he enjoyed watching sports (particularly hockey) and keeping up with current affairs. LEWIS, John - Age 66, of Lower Sackville, passed away April 19th, 2010 at home. Born in Ottawa he was a son of David (Pat) and Elna Lewis. John served in the Canadian Navy, including submarine service, for 24 and a half years. After retirement John was dedicated to his community and volunteered and served on the Board of Directors at Beacon House. John was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus. He enjoyed woodworking and camping with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Eileen (MacKenzie) of 41 years; his sons, Craig (Vicki) and David (Yae); sisters, Donna, Sharron (Mike), Mary (Paul); brother, Brian (Lynn); grandchildren, Natasha, Madeline, Emma and Aki and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Dougie. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on April 21, in Atlantic Funeral Home, 125 Sackville Dr., Lower Sackville. LILLY, Thomas Leroy (30 Aug 1936 - 27 Dec 2015) - age 79 years of Dartmouth passed away December 27, 2015 at Dartmouth General Hospital following a brief illness. Born in Halifax he was a son of the late Andrew & Emily (Skinner) Lilly. He was member of the Royal Canadian Navy, following his naval career he was employed with Saint John Naval Systems from where he retired. He was past president of the Dartmouth Hand Crafters Guild, a member of the Bluenose Golf & Country Club and a member of the South Shore Seniors Tour. He is survived by daughter Tanya Dares, Dartmouth, sons Roy, Dartmouth and Tim (Ivy), Martins River. Grandchildren, Stephen, Christopher, Jessica, Keileigh and Ben, great grandchildren Zoey and Mikael. Brothers Jack (Lois). Born in Windsor, Ont., he was a son of the late Reginald and Jean (Hunter) Tay. Karl served with the Royal Canadian Navy for 22 years, was an electrician with the public service, a member of Four Harbors Legion Tangier Branch 120, serving as Sergeant at Arms for 10 years. He was also a member of the Nova Scotia Bird Society, and an avid fisherman and crib player. He was a very generous, kind man and a proud grandfather. Surviving are daughter, Julie (Jason) Peatz, Calgary; son, Derek (Lisa), Dartmouth; sister, Margaret (Bob) Casterson, Ottawa; brothers, Warren (Dorothy), Truro; Donald (Cora), Windsor, Ont.; companion, Bernice Weeks; grandchildren, Corbin, Calla. LORE, William King Lowd - Born: 28 Feb 1909, Victoria, BC. Died: 05 Oct 2012, Hong Kong. He was the first Canadian-born Chinese to join the Royal Canadian Navy and also the first person of Chinese descent to serve in any of the British Commonwealth navies. In 1945, Mr. Lore was assigned as an intelligence staff officer for Radm Sir Cecil Harcourt, the commander of the fleet that sailed into Hong Kong harbour upon Japan's surrender in August 1945. Then SLt Lore was the first officer ashore where he led a platoon of marines to take control of British Station His Majesty's Ship Tamar, the shore base. He subsequently led his troops to free the Canadian, British and Hong Kong prisoners from the Sham Shui Po Camp. SLt Lore was present during the official hand over of the colony and the surrender of the Japanese forces on September 16th, 1945 in Hong Kong. After his naval service he took a law degree at Oxford University, eventually setting up his practice in Hong Kong. He was also the Hong Kong representative of the Sun Life Assurance Co. of Canada.

MALTAIS, Daniel (25 Aug 1973 - 23 Jul 2013) - 39, Head of Chezzetcook. He succumbed to his injuries following a motorcycle accident on Tuesday July 23, 2013. Born in Alma Quebec; son of Liguori Maltais and Maryse Larouche. Along with his parents Daniel is survived by his loving wife Marie-Josée; son Guillaume and sister Stephanie. He was predeceased by his younger brother Guillaume. Daniel, a polished submariner, retired from the Royal Canadian Navy after 22 years of loyal service. He will be greatly missed by us all and his spirit will remain in our hearts forever. He was Larger than life and everywhere he went, Daniel's magnetism drew people in and left a lifelong impression. Daniel definitely lived for two; he was driven and got things done. There was nothing big or bad enough that he could not conquer. Dan's ultimate lifelong passion was motorcycling; Cremation has taken place under the direction of Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street Dartmouth. A memorial service will take place at a later date in Quebec.

Died Last Night Colorful Sea Figure, Capt. A. J. May Dies

Halifax lost a colorful figure last night in the death of Lieutenant-Commander (retired) A. J. May, of the Royal Canadian Navy, which occurred at the Victoria General Hospital. Going to sea early in life, the career of the "Captain" May, as he was best known, was packed with thrilling experiences, he having served with the Merchant Navy in both peace and war. He was also a well known actor and was prominent in theatrical circles in Canada and the United States. Born in Weymouth, England, 75 years ago he received college education before going to sea. after considerable service in the merchant marine, he came to Canada about 25 years ago and since that time had made his home in Halifax. At the outbreak of the first Great War he joined the RCNVR, serving with the rank of captain. Torpedoed, he saw much action. He served for a time on the Canadian ships Margaret and Hochelaga. Following the last war, he served from time to time on yachts and was also connected with the Grenfell Mission. When not active at sea Lieutenant-Commander May took a great interest in amateur theatrical work, and participated in many broadcasts over CHNS and the CBC. A member of the Theatre Arts Guild, he was stage manager and played prominent parts on the stage at New York, Boston and in many Canadian cities, including Halifax. This season he played the part of Colonel Pepper in the Farm Broadcast over CBC. At the outbreak of the present conflict, he again returned to sea in the service of the Merchant Navy, and made three crossings, once as commander of a Nazi prize ship. About a year ago he was named to the Board of inquiry for delinquent seaman, with the rank of Lieutenant-commander. A bachelor, he resided at 20 Black Street for the past 12 years. Surviving is one sister, Mrs. Marion Barwell, Hampshire, England. A nephew resides in Los Angeles. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. (Halifax Mail, Tue, Apr 27 1943, Page 3)

MITCHELL, Robert S., Chief Petty Officer 2nd Class Naval Electronics Technician (Sonar), C.A.F. (Navy) - passed away suddenly Thursday November 19, 2015 at home. Born on November 21, 1946 in Vancouver BC, he was just two days away from his 69th birthday. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 45 years Christa, son Kevin, daughter Heather (Brent) and brother Marvin (Elizabeth). Bob or "Mitch" to his friends, grew up in Britannia Beach and Squamish, BC. He then joined the navy and spent the next 33 years serving on multiple ships and traveling the world. Not one to sit idle, once officially retired from the military he continued to work for the Commissionaires, enjoying posts at the Victoria PD, Ministry of Forestry and Veterans Affairs. A celebration of Bob's life may be held at a later date, notice of time and place will appear on his Facebook page. MORASH, Bruce Albert - age 63 of Lawrencetown passed away suddenly at the Dartmouth General Hospital on October 31st, 2015. Born in Halifax he was the son of the late Cyril Morash and Beulah Lynch (Graham) and Step father Gyde Lynch. Dedicated member of the Royal Canadian Navy serving 30 years as a Hull Technician, including countless overseas deployments. Past President of the Lawrencetown Community Centre, former member of the Lawrencetown Volunteer Fire Department and former member of the Naval Hull Tech Association. An avid sports enthusiast whether it was watching, coaching or playing. Lifelong fan of the Montreal Canadians. He enjoyed his weekly social gathering with friends. He loved taking in the view from his chair with his beloved puppy Cher by his side. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Sandra Morash (Conrad), proud father of daughter Melissa Morash (Douglas Roe) Lawrencetown, brother Shawn (Karla) Lynch, Rawdon, brother in law Gary (Debbie) Conrad, Lawrencetown, several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephew. Born in Picton, Ontario he was the son of the late Arthur and Nancy (Roberts) Morgan. Roger served in the Royal Canadian Navy form 1966 - 1992, worked for Halifax Regional School Board. Member of Atlantic Chiefs and Petty Officers Association and president of H.C.C.C. # 50. He is survived by his loving wife of 24 years Gwendolyn; two daughters Sara (William Murray) of Calgary; and Kathryn (partner John Skonnord) of Fort McMurray; sister in-law Audrey Morgan , Schreiber, Ontario; two grandchildren Jadyn and Brenna Murray of Calgary. He was predeceased by a brother Michael and sister in-law Alva. A memorial service will be held 11 am Tuesday November 6, 2012 in A. L. Mattatall Funeral Home 217 Portland Street. MOWAT, Robert Alexander Laird (Farley), PO1 - Born 08 Nov 1950, Died 18 Aug 2009 Father, husband, friend, sailor, pastor. Petty Officer First Class (ret'd) Robert Alexander Laird Mowat was these things and more to those who had the privilege of knowing him. "Farley" to his sailor buddies and "Sandy" to family will always be remembered for his zest for life and love of those close to him. He passed away at home on Aug. 18, 2009, age 58 of a heart attack. He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, and his sister Laura who died in February 2009. He is survived by wife Carole, daughter PO2 Erin Mowat R315 of HMCS Malahat, Sgt Robin Mowat of 737 Comm Sqn Saskatoon, and daughter-in-law Janelle. He also leaves behind three surviving siblings and his Anglican parish, which was like an extended family to him. Sadly, a fourth sibling, sister Mavis died two days after attending his funeral. Farley's naval career was colourful and long, typical of his generation of sailor. He had the tattoos to prove it! He was born on Nov. 8 ,1950, in Toronto, ON, one of seven children. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy as a Stoker as soon as he was old enough, in search of adventure and a future. Nor was he the first sailor to count himself lucky to find a lovely Nova Scotian bride. Farley had fond memories of his life in the Navy, from the early years on HMCS Bonaventure, Onondaga & Okanagan, to later years on HMCS Kootenay, Nipigon, Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan and Yukon and finally at HMCS Queen in Regina. He was so proud when his children followed his example by joining the Canadian Forces. His daughter was regularly approached at navy functions by former shipmates of her father's and the conversations always started with "let me tell you a story about your Dad." Upon retirement from the navy in 1991 Sandy heard a higher calling, which he answered. After his ordination as an Anglican minister in 1996 he joined the Midlakes Parish in Saskatchewan. His ministry took him to Moosomin, England, and finally Kindersley, SK, with the congregation of St Mary's. Be he "Farley" or "Sandy" to you, his guitar and singing were a huge part of his life. Pictures remain of him wearing square rig and leading a round of song in the mess. Music remained a large part of his life. In England he and his guitar closed down the local pub on countless occasions. At home in Saskatchewan his band the "Steamin Armpitz" were regular features. In pubs, pulpits, and legions wherever home was, it was never long before Sandy and his guitar would soon appear. Consider these final words from his eulogy as delivered by his son: "Each of you here harbour your own special memory of your time with him. I ask you to consider these memories today and in the future. Memories are gifts from the great Sea of Life and you can board them and sail around in them anytime you like, regardless of if your life is swamped or softened under sunny skies."

MacDONALD, Chester Thomas, CPO, MAR ENG (14 Aug 1933 - 19 Jan 1987) - 53, 14 Churchill Court, Dartmouth, died Friday in Halifax Infirmary. Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of Mrs. Alice (Fraser) MacDonald and the late Allister MacDonald, Thorburn. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Navy for 25 years, retiring in 1976, then serving on the Coast Guard ship The Labrador, until his death. He was a life member of the Chief and Petty Officers' Mess, CFB Halifax. Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife, the former Eva Arthurs, Dartmouth; a daughter, Janice (Mrs. Allen Nicholson), Sackville; a son, David, Sackville; three grandchildren; a sister, Jeanie (Mrs. Robert Cameron), Campbellton, N.B.; a brother, Raymond, Oromocto, N.B. The remains are resting in Dartmouth Funeral Home, where funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Cremation will follow. MacINTYRE, Norman Elwell (Cork) - Age 83, of Labelle, Queens Co., passed away peacefully in Queens General Hospital, Liverpool, on Tuesday, November 17, 2015, with family by his side. Born in Blackville, N.B., he was a son of the late George Duncan and Sydney (Wood) Mac-Intyre. 'Cork' attended Blackville Junior High school until the age of 14 when his father died. He then went to work in the lumber camps as a cook and teamster, he cut pulp wood, worked on trucks, painted bridges, picked potatoes and laid steel for the railway. In 1949, at the age of 17 and a half, Cork joined the Royal Canadian Navy. He served on HMCS Iroquois during the Korean War and saw action when the ship was hit by artillery fire. Cork served on various ships during his career, such as HMCS Ontario, HMCS Portage, HMCS Penetang, HMCS Outremont, HMCS LaHulloise, HMCS Provider, HMCS Fraser, HMCS Annapolis, and HMCS Yukon. After 25 years at sea, Cork retired in 1975 and began another 20-year career with Canada Post. After his second retirement, he spent time in Florida where he trapped wild pigs and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He and Shirley returned to Nova Scotia and settled in Labelle where he worked for various families doing general maintenance and yard work. In keeping with his naval career, his son Terry served with the Royal Canadian Navy for 20 years and his son Jerry is currently serving his 37th year with the Canadian Coast Guard. Cork became his daughter Cheryl's own personal fishing guide, showing her all the best places to cast a line. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Shirley (Gallant); his daughter, Cheryl Gillam (Tommy Singer) of Shubenacadie; his sons, Terry (Cheryl) of Nine Mile River; Jerry (Margaret) of Lake Echo; grandchildren, Shawn (Tina), Lee-Anne (Jeff), Mandee (Scott), Troy, Jennie (Alex), Jaime, Stephanie (Darrell), Michelle; great-grandchildren, Trent, Sawyer, Sarah, Mason, Lily, Brianna, Tristin, Jon and Regan; his sister, Elizabeth 'Betty' Conners of Ottawa and many nieces and nephews. MacNEIL, Gregory J., Petty Officer - 46 Beech St., Sydney Mines, died February 23, 1998, in Northside General Hospital, North Sydney. Born in North Sydney, he was a son of the late James and Catherine (MacLean) MacNeil. He spent the early years of his life in North Sydney and New Waterford. He was employed at Sydney Engineering & Dry Dock before joining the Royal Canadian Navy in 1955. He served 28 years as a Marine Engineer Technician. McCALLUM, Eric - Suddenly on July 8, 2015 Eric McCallum was tragically taken from us. He is survived by his wife Judi, son Joel, daughter Amy and granddaughter Hayleigh, the light of his life. Also, his father Laurie, sister Ann (Joe), brothers Les (Cindy) and Charlie (Ronni) and their families and an abundance of friends. Eric retired from the Navy in 2005 after 35 years service. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, R.P. Association and Royal Colwood Golf Course. He was a proud member of the Tri Service Military Veterans Association and rode his Harley regularly with his fellow veterans for both charity and pleasure. "See you later old sailor. McEACHERN, Brian Francis (The Noodle) - (1940-2008) 67, of Coldbrook, Kings County, passed away Saturday, March 1, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Thomas and Margaret (Nearing) McEachern. He was educated at St. Ann's School in Glace Bay and in 1957, joined the Royal Canadian Navy. In 1974, he transferred to HMC Dockyard, retiring as an engineer in 1993. He is survived by a daughter, Marlene (Lawrence) Toney, Cambridge; two sons, Thomas "Tommy" (Heather) and Robert "Bobby" (Linda), both of Edmonton, Alberta; a brother, Paul (Norma MacIsaac), Halifax; nine grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Gertrude "Trudy" Anderson; a sister, Claire Melnyk; an infant brother, Thomas. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there will be no visitation by family request. O'BRIEN, Jack Lennis - 89, West Bay, Richmond Co., passed away on Thursday, November 5, 2015, in the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston. Born in Zurich, Hay Township, Ontario, he was a son of the late Lennis George and Mary Pearl (Fairbairn) O'Brien. Jack served 30 years in the Canadian Armed Forces, serving on the HMCS Magnificent and HMCS Bonaventure. Jack was a Solider, Sailor and a great storyteller and was also an avid hunter and fisherman. Jack retired as Chief Petty Officer. He was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 47, St. Peter's and a member of West Bay United Church. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Surviving are his daughters, Jean MacDonald, West Bay; Mary (Edmund) Tucker, Mount Uniacke; sons, Michael (Evelyn), Windsor, NS; Daniel (Patricia), Winnipeg; 8 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Marjorie (Spencer); brothers, Doug and Patrick; sister, Jean. There will be no visitation by request. HMCS MAGNIFICENT, HMCS BONAVENTURE

OIVANEN, Gary Lawrence, PO2, RCN - 79, Born on December 19th, 1934 in North Bay, Ontario. Passed away on August 7th, 2013 in the VG Site of the QEII. His battle with lung and bone cancer was short. Predeceased by his mother Rose Rebecca Brigginshaw (North Bay, Ontario) and his father Jack Kaulco "Karl"Oivanen, (Rauma, Finland). He is survived by his son John and Daughter Susan (Steve Angus). He has a sister Barbara "Susie" Dorrington, Queensland, Australia and her children Mark, Lisa and Gary. His long time friend, Gloria Lavoie and her sons, Rick (Amy), Louis (Lisa),Tony and Johnny. He joined the navy at 16 and had to get his parent's permission. He did his basic training in Cornwallis and spent a few weeks at Debert. Gary served on the HMCS Magnificent and Bonaventure. At the age of 35 he was considered an old man working on the flight deck. Shearwater was his next stop with the DND fire department. On a call he fell of the fire truck and spent the next year rehabilitating. With his sea legs repaired he served on the HMCS St. Laurent, HMCS Iroquois and the HMCS Fraser, working with the helicopters as a fire fighter. He spent 25 years in the navy and then retired. His retirement lasted one day. He went on to work at DND fire department for 17 years, becoming a Platoon Chief and an instructor at the DND fire school in Purcell's Cove. He taught many young men to drive those fire trucks and stop on a dime. He had to retire from this at age 55 because of surgery. Gary spent many hours fishing with his son when they were younger. He loved to be outdoors. His favorite meal until the end was still fish and chips. As he got older he learned to use a computer and would spend hours with programs of simulated air flights. He and his son learned to play games on the xbox and spent many hours together with this entertainment. With his daughter he spent many Sundays at flea markets looking for rare books and buying movies. Clint Eastwood was his favourite actor and he collected all his movies. He loved detective stories. He loved to read, he would pick one author at a time and read all of their books. Books on Admiral Nelson were his favorite sea stories. He spent many hours, especially in the winter reading his adventures. Gary was a great story teller. He would spend hours telling you stories of his own sea adventures. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Road. In keeping with his wishes, a private graveside service will be held at a later date. There can't be enough good words said about the Palliative Care unit at the VG. Everyone took such good care of Dad. Special thanks to you all. PARSONS, William Charles (Bill) - After a short stay, Bill passed peacefully at V.G.H. on December 19, 2015, at the age of 90 years. He is loved and missed by his wife of 68 years, Doreen; 5 sons and daughters-in-law, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He also leaves his sister, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. Born in Winnipeg in 1925, Bill moved to Victoria with his family in 1936, where he lived in Strawberry Vale, graduating from Mt. View High School. He immediately joined the R.C.A.F. and after training, served as a Flying Officer on active war service. In 1945 he transferred to the R.C.N. Fleet Air Arm, serving on H.M.C.S. Magnificent and ashore in Halifax, until he was posted to Patricia Bay in 1961, leaving the service in 1963. It was during his naval training in the U.K. that he met, wooed and married Doreen in 1947. Bill enjoyed years of retirement, travelling in Canada, the U.S., and to New Zealand numerous times. His special place was the family cabin on the Cowichan River, where he spent many a summer day in quiet seclusion, and enjoying gatherings with his family. He also introduced his sons to hunting, and took part in the annual moose hunt for over 20 years. The family would like to thank the staff on 4 South at V.G.H., for their compassion and understanding while Bill was in their care. Also, the staff at the Veterans Care Centre at Broadmead for their efforts on Bill's behalf, and Dr. Klingenberg for her untiring patience. At Bill's request, there will be no service. PATERSON, John (Jack) - Died suddenly, January 26, 2009, in his 88th year. He is survived by children John (Bonnie-Jane) and Lesley (Alec); grandchildren Lexie (Sean), Tim, Michael (Tracy), Tessa (Tyler), Gabriel and Daniel; sister, Mrs. Ruth Doole, Gibsons, B.C. Four great-grandchildren Kate and Matthew, Jaeden and Chase, are also saddened by the loss of their special grandpa. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Frances, in 2007. He served in the navy from 1941 to 1945. As a Lieutenant, Jack served as Communications Officer aboard the Magog until the ship was torpedoed by a German U-Boat in the St. Lawrence River in October 1944. The ship was declared a total loss and the entire crew of the Magog was transferred to another frigate which served as part of the protection for convoys to England. After obtaining a Masters degree in Agriculture from the University of Saskatchewan, he worked out of Winnipeg. In 1957 he joined the chemical distributor, Canada Colors and Chemicals Ltd., based in Toronto. He rose to the position of Vice President and finished his successful career with this firm in 1986. He was a longtime golf and curling member of the Burlington Golf & Country Club and will be missed by a wide circle of friends. He especially enjoyed his past year at Heritage Place with the friendly staff and residents. He was "Mr. Social" for his great ability to remember a name and to call a person by name. PEPPER, Roy, Chief Petty Officer Marine Engineer (31 May 1928 - 16 Nov 2013) - 85, it is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of Roy Pepper of Dartmouth on Saturday November 16, 2013 in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Infirmary Site. Born in Berling, Kent, England to Walter and Alice Pepper, he was predeceased by his parents, brothers Ted, George, John and sister Bette. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Thelma; son Michael (Sandy) Lake Echo, grandsons Andrew (Monique Boudreau) Bedford, Christopher (Kate Steele) East Lawrencetown; sister Doris Ballard of Chatham, Kent and many loving family members in Kent County. Roy was a submariner with the Royal Navy and the Royal Canadian Navy for 33 years with an additional 15 years service to SRU Atlantic. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Military Merit by the Governor General of Canada in 1978 and awarded the Queen's Jubilee Medal in 2012 for his years of service to the Submariners Association of Canada (East); an organization he was extremely proud to be a member of. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, took part in their poppy campaigns and never missed Remembrance Day services. Roy enjoyed many years of bowling with Dartmouth Senior Bowling Leagues and with the Travelling League in HRM. To his proud family, he will be remembered as a wonderful husband, brother, father, father-in-law and grandfather and to all who knew him he is being remembered as fair, compassionate, very easy to deal with and always smiling. He will be greatly missed. The family would like to thank the staff of the QEII 5.2 ICU especially Walter, Cora, Annetta, Colleen, Dr. Adam Gillis and Dr. Chris Hinkewich for their care of Roy in his last days and for the compassion shown to him and the entire family. PETERS, Delbert Alicen - Passed away on December 30th, 2015, in Brookfield at the age of 88. Born on October 10th, 1927 in Vilna, Alta., to his parents, Ross and Alcine Ruby (Oakes) Peters. His first career was in the Royal Canadian Navy (1946-1976), serving on the HMCS Magnificent and HMCS Bonaventure as well as being stationed at HMCS Shearwater (Nova Scotia) and HMCS Patricia Bay (British Columbia). His second career was with the Edmonton Public School Board (1976-1992) in Edmonton, Alta. In 2014 he moved to Nova Scotia to live with his son Shane, spend time with his oldest navy buddy Frank Reesor, and participate in CNAG functions at Shearwater. A thoughtful, kind and gentle spirit, Delbert spent his life supporting his family, and extended that care to everyone around him. Be it a drive home for a friend after a get together, helping a neighbour with a chore or simply to offer useful advice, he was always the first one to volunteer his time and energy. Delbert is survived by his sisters, Blanche Stover and Jean Leary; sister-in-law, Jean; son and daughter-in-law, Shane and Sharon (Domier), son and daughter-in-law Scott and Dawn (Freeman); granddaughters, Allyson (Reid) and Galadriel and grandson, Thorin. He was preceded in death by his wife, Iris (Fokes); brothers, Harrison, Lynne and Ellis and daughter, Shellie. Special thanks to the friends in Nova Scotia who welcomed him to their events and to staff at Elk Court for taking such good care of him in his final months. PRESLEY, Wayne Arthur - 63, Wellington. It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Wayne after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. He passed away peacefully on February 29, 2012, in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Arnprior, Ont. to the late Clifford and Dorothy (Bigras) Presley. They unfortunately passed away when he was seven and he moved in with his maternal grandparents, Nelly and Arthur whom he loved dearly. At age 17 Wayne joined the Royal Canadian Navy where he served for 23 years, He was a submariner, proudly wearing his dolphins while serving on the Onondaga, Ojibwa and Okanagan. Following his retirement from the military, Wayne spent over 25 years in the fire service, where he started as a volunteer with LWF Fire Department in 1976. He achieved the rank of Chief and then chose to move into a professional fire fighting career; Wayne loved his job and retired following his diagnosis with Parkinson's disease in 2001. Wayne is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Marilyn (Mac Eachern); sons, Derek (Heidi) of Fall River; Daryl (Lesleigh) of St. Albert, Alta.; daughter, Chantal (Kevin Harding) of Fall River. He was a proud Papa to Josh, Dylan, Jenna, Logan, Kristopher, Jayson, Tyler, and Sara. Wayne lived for his family with a motto of family first. He is also survived by brothers, Glenn (Sally), Windsor, Ont.; Guy (Tina), Sussex, N.B.; sister, Shirley (Earl), Windsor, Ont. He was predeceased by infant twin brothers. Born in Sydney, he was a son of George Prosser, Sydney and the late Emma Prosser. He was a member of Emmanuel Anglican Church, Halifax. He retired after serving 25 years in the Royal Canadian Navy, retiring with the rank of PO2. He was presently employed with Summer Gardens, Summer Street, Halifax.

RALSTON, Robert Walter (Bob) (17 Nov 1925 - 30 Nov 2015) - Bob quietly passed away after a long and gallant battle with congestive heart failure. He sadly lost his youngest son, Rob, this past September. Bob will be missed by his wife Evelyn, "his Honey", married 68 1/2 years, children Lyn and Bill, their families, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many friends. Bob was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta, the middle child of 5. The Prairies were his playground where he flew homemade planes, fished, trapped ground hogs, biked, delivered papers and played hockey for the Medicine Hat Sky Chiefs. Bob's early years were spent gardening with his Granny, cooking and baking with Mom, farming, building, drafting and basic engineering with his Dad and Uncles. At 15 he joined the Air Cadets, worked in the local bakery where he became top Baker. At 17 he enlisted at HMCS Tecumseh and served on the Atlantic Seaboard from 42-45, and was a boxer for the Navy, winning several bouts. Bob returned to Calgary, worked for Bryce's Bakery, and met his honey Ev, at a dance. They rode his motorcycle to the Banff foothills and picnicked on the Prairies. Bob sold the bike for them to marry and move to Vancouver in 1947. There, he worked at Sunbeam Bakery, they had 3 children and he started his own construction business. In 1954 he moved his family to North Vancouver where he earned a reputation for fantastic, well built homes. Times were tough, but Bob and Ev managed to spend weekend days with the kids piled in the car, often several extra children too, and picnic on the mountains or beaches. His passion for gardening and baking were always present. He loved his grandchildren and, in his gruff manner, he took great pleasure in sharing his knowledge with them. He grew roses and glads and baked the best cinnamon sticky buns, ever, up to the last year. Bob's family thanks all the staff at the Lynn Valley Care Centre Lodge 2 for their gentle care. We give a special thank you to Nancy, Dr.J. Adair and Joy for their years of kindness and care. In lieu of cards and flowers if you wish, make a donation to a charity of your choice, or to the Royal Canadian Legion Lynn Valley Branch # 114 whose members have helped many in our community. At Bob's request there will be no service. Bob was a man of the earth. RITCHIE, William Bathie - 73, Lower Sackville, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2005, in the New Halifax Infirmary, QEII, with his family by his side. Born in Dundee, Scotland, he was the son of the late Richard Ritchie and Margaret (Soutar). He served an apprenticeship as a pattern maker in the Caledon shipyards in Dundee before joining the Royal Navy in 1952. He emigrated to Canada and served in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1955 until 1982. He joined the First Canadian Submarine Squadron in 1963 and earned the rank of Chief Warrant Officer aboard HMCS Ojibwa in 1978. He was an avid bridge player and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Sackville Branch. He enjoyed times spent with his large family at home and at the family cottage, which he built in 1984. He is survived by his sons, Bill, Jim (Roseanne), and Graham; daughters, Winnie (Gormley), Charlene (Francis) MacNeil and Lynn (Terry) Davis; grandchildren, Liam, Matthew, Justin, William, Hannah, Shiona, Stephanie, Melissa, Allison, Cameron, Maggie, James, Caleigh, Taylor, and Ted. Frank died on 15 Oct 1946 at the Royal Ottawa Sanatorium from pulmonary tuberculosis which in the opinion of the Naval Commission was deemed related to his Military Service. SHEALS, Stephen John (Squirrel) - 75, of Dartmouth, passed away on August 6, 2012, in Dartmouth General Hospital with his loving family by his side. Born in Toronto, Ont., he was the son of the late Jean (Coleman) and Stephen Sheals. He was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces for 30 years reaching the rank of Chief Petty Officer 1st Class, and retiring in 1984. He was proud of his military career and could spin tales for hours about all of his adventures at the many ports he visited over the years. After retirement he spent the next few years running "Squirrel’s Nest Trophies" and then moved on to working at River Oaks Golf Club in Meagher’s Grant. Squirrel enjoyed golfing, travelling and playing crib. He is survived by sons, Stephen (Colleen) of Victoria, B.C.; Tony (Vi) of Windsor and daughter, Cathy Hiltz (Kendall) of Dartmouth. He is also survived by grandchildren, Adam Cruikshank, David and Kevin Sheals, Courtney, Kellie and Traci Sheals, Pamela Little and Katie and Stephanie Hiltz; five  great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Squirrel is also survived by his companion, Ann Nunn, who joined him on his adventure across Canada many breakfasts at Smitty's and nightly crib games. Squirrel was predeceased by is wife of 45 years, the former Joan MacDonald in 2003. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 10th at 1:30 p.m. in Donald K. Walker Funeral Home located at 307 Prince Albert Rd., Dartmouth. Reception will follow the ceremony. Donations may be made to Kidney Foundation of Canada, Nova Scotia Branch.

SHEEHAN, William Peter - Bill was born in 1925 in Hazelton, BC to Patrick Henry Sheehan and Sara Louise Scallon, the eighth of eleven children. He and his siblings were raised in Hazelton, but later moved to Mission and New Westminster in the 1930s.  Bill joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served in HMCS Forest Hill. After the war, Bill lived in Vancouver and worked for Canada Post. He passed away in 1975 at Vancouver.

SIMPER, Owen H.E. (Ted) (16 Feb 1924 - 29 Jan 2012) - passed away peacefully and with dignity at Glades Lodge on January 29, 2012. He was a World War II Veteran of the British and Royal Canadian Navy. He is survived by son, Ian (Judith Cahill) Simper, Ottawa, ON. Owen was predeceased by his spouse, Jeannie Oatt (Richardson), son Allan and grandson, Glenn. Special thanks to the staff at Glades Lodge. There will be no funeral service, as per Owen's request.

SQUIRE, Thomas Alan, Lt (S), RCN (05 Nov 1927 - 02 Mar 2009) - Thomas Alan Squire passed away peacefully on March 2, 2009 at Riverview Health Centre, Winnipeg, after a short battle with cancer at the age of 81 years. Remaining to cherish Alan's memory are Margaret (Whaley) Squire, his beloved wife of 50 years; his daughter Shelagh Jennifer Squire (Douglas Fisher) and granddaughter Blythe Squire-Fisher of Reading, England; his nieces and their families, Anne Kinch (Russ), Campbellford, Ontario, Pamela Wagner (Robert), Glen Ellen, California, Katherine Hooton (Mark), Courtenay, British Columbia, and his cousin, Mary Margaret Vanstone. He was predeceased by his parents Thomas Earl and Hazel (Vanstone) Squire, his sister Margaret (Squire) Welland and niece Beth (Welland) Tompsett. Born in Winnipeg, Alan grew up in McCreary. He graduated from United College and the University of Manitoba and joined the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserves (RCNVR) in June 1945. He served on numerous ships and, in 1951, was awarded the King George VI Naval Sword as best cadet, East Coast. Leaving active service in 1958 with the rank of Lieutenant (N) (S), he married Margaret in Merrickville, Ontario. Returning to Winnipeg, he joined the T. Eaton Company, ending his career of over 25 years as Sales and Merchandise Accounting Manager, Western Region. A longstanding supporter of the Naval Officers Association of Canada (NOAC), Alan was recognized with their Bronze, Silver and Gold medals and an honorary life membership. A service to celebrate Alan's life will be held on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel at Riverview Health Centre, 1 Morley Avenue. Flowers gratefully declined. STEELE, Richard Miles, CD, DSC, MID, Order of Canada, Capt, RCN - Family man, horticulturalist, navy veteran, aesthete. Born Sept. 22, 1915, in Rothesay, N.B. Died March 14, 2010 in Bridgewater, N.S., of multiple causes, aged 94. At his beloved plant farm, surrounded by rhododendrons in full bloom, Captain Richard (Dick) Steele would chuckle and say, “I used to be one of my country’s hired assassins, but I’ve always thought of myself as a pacifist. That’s what I’m doing here, in my own way.” Dick believed that beautiful plants and gardens made people more virtuous and the world a more peaceful place. To many, he was “Captain Rhododendron,” a tongue-in-cheek homage to a visionary who opened up new possibilities for ornamental horticulture in Atlantic Canada and beyond. That was the other side of the man who was commander of the Tribal-class destroyer HMCS Nootka, a veteran of the Second World War and Korea, and recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross. Dick’s life as the first of eight children of Ralph and Ethel Steele wasn’t easy. He suffered from polio and his father died of lung cancer when Dick was 15. Early vocations included fur trapper, sports reporter and bank clerk. In 1940, he headed to Halifax for officer training in the Royal Canadian Navy. He married Nancy MacDonald in 1941; three children followed, Dick Jr., Sally and Diana. Even in the midst of the Battle of the Atlantic, Dick’s aesthetic sensitivity was apparent. The interior of HMCS Rimouski was, in his words, “grey and cramped and bad for morale. I told the men to pick a colour scheme out of one of the lady’s magazines and repaint her. I figured that way we couldn’t go too far wrong.” As commander of Cornwallis naval base in Nova Scotia in 1961, he banished such naval icons as painted rocks and anchors, replacing them with flowering shrubs grown from his own seeds and cuttings. Later, while Canadian naval adviser to NATO in Norfolk, Va., he often travelled to Europe, squeezing in plant research on the side. After retiring from the navy in 1969 he started York River Nursery in Virginia. Dick returned to Nova Scotia and set up Bayport Plant Farm in 1973. Diana managed the business, and he focused on crossbreeding rhododendron species and hybrids to produce tough plants for the Atlantic climate. Nancy was in firm command on the domestic front. In 1998, Dick was awarded the gold medal of the American Rhododendron Society. In 2004, he became a member of the Order of Canada. In the navy, Dick had a reputation for being a no-nonsense, pragmatic sea officer, impatient of formalities and bureaucracy. Yet as a mentor to several generations of plant lovers, he showed great kindness and generosity of spirit. Dick leaves behind friends, colleagues and admirers that span the globe, and a legacy of rhododendrons for generations to come.

WALZAK, Albert (Al), CD, LCdr, RCN - (1931-2012) 80, of Halifax, died peacefully on Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, at home surrounded by his family. Al was born in New Waterford, N.S., the eldest son of the late William and Gertrude (Stepaniak) Walzak. After graduation from St. FX University in 1955 with a bachelor of arts degree (major in geology), Al joined the Royal Canadian Navy Reserve as acting sub-lieutenant. He retired as a lieutenant commander after serving 36 years. During his career he sailed on various ships and had shore postings on the east and west coasts before retiring from the maritime command staff in December 1987. He became involved in volunteer work with refugees and immigrants, which led him to a second career working with immigration as a settlement officer with the Metropolitan Immigration Settlement Association. Al worked with MISA for eight years helping refugees and immigrants seeking settlements and shelter in Canada, and this passion to help others continued in his volunteer work until the very end. Albert was a man of action and compassion, always putting the needs of others before himself. In recognition of his work with those in need, he and his wife, Virginia, were awarded the Elizabeth Ann Seton Award by the Sisters of Charity in 2007. A man of faith, Albert was an active member of Saint Lawrence parish and more recently Saint Benedict parish in Halifax. In his retirement years, Al especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends at the lake. The door was open to all and his generous hospitality and kindness were felt by so many. As a wonderful storyteller, he has richly entertained many with his life experiences and tales. Albert was predeceased by his parents and brothers William (Bucky) and Russell (Rabs) Walzak. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Virginia (Bowes); children, Gina (Mark Young), Kelly, Taya (Bob Shields) and Albert 'Buddy' (Lisa Haydon); his grandchildren, Mitchell, Meagan and Stephanie Young, Brian, Jeffrey and Christina Meagher, Erin and Adrienne Shields, Amy and Maryn Walzak, and great-grandchild, Owen Meagher. Albert is also survived by his uncle, Stanley Stepaniak; sisters-in-law, Theresa Walzak (Bucky) and Phemie Walzak (Russell), all of New Waterford; as well as a niece and several nephews. Visitation will be held at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax today (Tuesday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A mass of Christian Burial will be held at Saint Benedict Church, 45 Radcliffe Dr., Halifax, at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, Fr. James Mallon officiating. Burial to follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Refugee Sponsorship Program, Archdiocese of Halifax or Saint Vincent de Paul Society, Saint Benedict Council. Loving thanks are extended to a dear friend who was constantly at his bedside. The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to the palliative care staff of the QE II Hospital and to the Victorian Order of Nurses whose presence and outstanding support enabled us to care for Al at home.

WARD, Ronald J. (Sharkey), Chief Petty Officer, Engineer, RCN / C.A.F. - 70, King Street, Parrsboro, passed away Friday, November 14, 2008, in South Cumberland Community Care Centre, Parrsboro. Born in Highland Creek, Ont., he was a son of the late Arthur and Wilma (McGregor) Ward. Prior to joining the navy in 1955, he was employed with Highland Creek Sand and Gravel as a truck driver and with K.J. Beamish Construction, building the 401 Highway as a scraper operator. During his career in the navy, he obtained a private pilot's license at Shearwater Flying Club and participated in activities with the Shearwater Sport Parachute Club, having completed seven jumps. The last 14 years of his career were spent in the submarine service and the last six years as chief engineer. He retired in 1982 after 26 1/2 years service. He was employed as security at Sand River Community Correctional Centre for 3 1/2 years and for the next 13 years was employed as Parrsboro Town Jailer. He served as a civilian member and auxiliary constable with the local RCMP detachment and was a casual with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Department. He resigned from all three organizations on March 16, 1999 due to ill health. He was a life member of the Submarine C.P.O.S. Mess and the CFB Halifax C.P.O.S. Mess. He was a member of the Submarine Old Comrades Association, the Atlantic C.P.O.S. Association, Legion Branch No. 45, Parrsboro and the Chignecto Handgun Club. He is survived by daughters, Cathy Ward (David Fulton), Parrsboro; Sharon Lalonde (Mark), Bathurst, N.B.; sons, Ronald (Susan), Saint John, N.B.; Darrell (Lisa); Larry (Heather), all of Parrsboro; sister, Margaret "Peggy" Smith, Warkworth, Ont.; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandson. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Doris Wilcox in 2008. There will be no funeral service by request. (The Chronicle Herald 15 Nov 2008)
