COURT, Edward
Douglas (Doug), CD (26 Oct 1920 - 05 Mar 2010) - was born
in Calgary, Alberta. He had a glorious childhood riding
bareback, shooting gophers, and even spent a summer sleeping
in a teepee. He left Calgary when he was 17 to join the Royal
Canadian Navy. During his 14 years of service he rose from Boy
Seaman to Chief Petty Officer and served in both World War II
and the Korean War. He served on Destroyers, Mine Sweepers,
and Corvettes. He served in both the Atlantic and Pacific, was
in the English Channel on D-Day, and spent an extensive period
on convoy duty in the infamous North Atlantic (including the
Murmansk run guarding supply convoys destined for Northern
Russia). The Korean War was the United Nation's first ever
combat mission, and Doug served on one of the first ships
deployed. His specialty was ASDIC (anti-submarine detection -
the forerunner of Sonar). During peace time, he was an
instructor at various naval bases across the country. (Doug
loved technology and talked about the privilege of watching
its evolution. When he first joined the Navy, watches were
still kept in the crow's nest! He lived from those days, to
the days of Podcasts and Twitter - the concepts of which
fascinated him.) Before Doug left the Navy his focus had
changed to radio, and his last posting was to the Navy's radio
station in Matsqui. That was a natural segue into his second
career at CKNW in New Westminster, where Doug spent 30 years
as an Engineer. There too, he watched technology change. When
he began his career at CKNW the station had resident
musicians, and reel to reel tape recorders were a new
innovation! Doug was part of the elite team of engineers
responsible for relocating the entire station after fire
destroyed its original studios on Columbia Street, then over
the years taking CKNW from a 5,000 watt community radio
station to the 50,000 watt market leader, and launching CFMI.
He loved CKNW and after his official retirement in 1981 Doug
continued to work part time at the station, coordinating the
technical aspects of all CFL, NHL, and NBA broadcasts. During
retirement he also worked part time as a researcher for
Southam Building Reports and as a docent for the Burnaby Art
Gallery. Despite his career, Doug's world revolved around his
family. He met his wife Margaret in Calgary when he was 17 and
they married as soon as he turned 21. She was his inseparable
partner through nearly 68 years of marriage until she died 10
months ago. As a succession of health issues (strokes and the
resulting vascular dementia) shrank his world, he never
complained. Instead saying that as long as he had Margaret and
his daughter, Lorna by his side he had everything he could
ever want. He loved to recite poetry, paint watercolours,
read, research, garden, build, fix and invent. He grew organic
vegetables decades before it became fashionable, was a
perfectionist with woodwork and carpentry, and an innovator
with electronics. (He set the bar for the term Daddy fix!)
Doug is predeceased by his parents George and Emily Court, his
younger sister June Murray, beloved wife Margaret, and many of
his dearest friends. Left to honour his memory are his
daughter Lorna, his youngest sister Marion (Midge) Shields, 5
nephews and a niece, and many treasured friends. A memorial
service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 19th at Ocean
View Funeral Home (Imperial & Boundary in Burnaby). In
lieu of flowers, donations to the CKNW Orphan's Fund are
appreciated. (The Vancouver Sun 12 Mar 2010)

Willaim (Bert) (20 Feb 1926 - 05 Jun 2016) - With great
sadness the family of Albert (Bert) William Gorham of Hampton,
NB, mourn his passing in his 91st year. Born in Montreal, QC,
he was the youngest of the 13 children of Annie and Herbert
Gorham. In his early years in Montreal he was known by
"Jack" or "Dempsey" by his friends. Bert
joined the Royal Canadian Navy in World War II after forging
his father's signature. He followed his naval service with
service in the Merchant Marine, travelling extensively in both
North and South America. His children, their spouses,
grandchildren, or anyone who would listen, were often
entertained by stories of his time at sea. After serving his
country, Bert and his wife Evelyn moved to Saint John, N.B.
for the start up of the Irving Oil refinery. He later moved on
to the Canaport offshore oil terminal for it's launch. He was
employed by Irving for 25 years, retiring in 1984 as Marine
Superintendent. Burt never met a stranger, was never without a
joke to make you laugh, and always had a dog biscuit in his
pocket to treat somebody's pet. True to his parents' English
heritage, he never refused a cup of tea. True to his Canadian
heritage, he enjoyed the daily ritual of flying the Maple Leaf
over his home in Hampton. Bert was a proud lifetime member of
the Masonic Lodge. Bert was pre-deceased by his wife of 56
years, Evelyn, in 2014; a son in infancy; and his first wife,

in the accomplishments of his children and his treasured
grandchildren. Bert also cherished his friends that became

daughters Hannah and Emily. The family would like to thank the
medical and support staff of St. Joseph's hospital in Saint
John and Frederick Hall, Parkland Shannex in Fredericton for

BOURQUE,
Adelbert Nicholas - age 98, of Yarmouth, passed away on
June 8th, 2016, in Veteran’s Place, Yarmouth. Our family is
saddened by the passing of our dear father. In the last couple
of years, he has suffered and recovered from several
challenging health problems. Born on December 6th, 1917, (the
day of the Halifax Explosion) son of Jeremie and Sarafie
Bourque. Dad has enjoyed a long and productive life. He
courted many a gal and married the best one - our mom.
Together, they built a warm and caring home for their family.
When we were young students at school, dad would take great
pleasure in stretching our math abilities through his long
math sums that we would calculate at the kitchen table. Dad
had a great passion for music - he could play the mouth organ
before he went to school. He also loved his fiddle and his
mandolin. One could truly say: he whistled while he worked.
Dad proudly served in the Navy as a Petty Officer. After the
war, he continued his trade of carpentry, building quite a few
houses that are visible in the local villages from Tusket to
Surette's Island. Many times, his work took him to Northern
Nfld, and Labrador where he would work for months and return
to us for Christmas. While it could be said that our Dad was a
man of few words, his praise and mentorship were valued by
many. He is survived by his children; Jerry (Julia), Suzanne
Pelham (Chris), David (Bernadette), Eric and Renee; 8
grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He will be sadly
missed by Joanne and Bill Bourque who cared for him with love
and compassion for 14 years. During the last three years of
his life, Dad was a resident at the Veterans Place in
Yarmouth, where he enjoyed the friendship of vets and nursing
staff alike. He also enjoyed the musical performances and
would often sing along. Dad was pre-deceased by his parents,
his wife, Jacqueline Burke; siblings, Leonard, Lillian, Jean-Baptiste,
Geraldine, Celeste, and Victor. He was the last surviving
member of his immediate family. Funeral arrangements are under
the care and direction of H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29
Albert Street, Yarmouth. A visitation will be held on Monday,
June 13th from 7-9 p.m. with a Royal Canadian Legion service
at 7:30 p.m., followed by prayers at 8 p.m. A funeral mass
will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at Ste. Famille Church,
Amirault's Hill, Father Albenie d'Entremont officiating, with
a reception to follow at the church hall. Family flowers only.
Donations in memory can be made to l'Arche Homefires, 10

LEGGE, Charles
Edwin, (Charlie to friends, Bud to family) (15 Sep
1928 - 27 May 2016) - age 87, of Dartmouth, passed away
peacefully May 27 at home surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Robinsons, Newfoundland; he was the son of the late
Leona and William Legge. He was a Korean War veteran stationed
on the Royal Canadian Navy destroyer HMCS Cayuga, which played
a pivotal role in operations. A modest man, he rarely talked
about his war experiences. But Veterans Affairs Canada credits
the ship with helping to blockade the enemy coast, preventing
amphibious landings, protecting aircraft carriers from
submarine and aerial attacks, and bombarding enemy-held
coastal areas while providing help to residents in isolated
Korean fishing villages. It also took the lead in a dangerous
mission up the shallow, winding and mined-littered Taedong
River on a December night in 1950, to help residents of
Chinnampo evacuate in the wake of a massive enemy advance. It
and other ships eventually destroyed rail lines, docks and
supplies that could have been used by the invading forces. In
2014, the Republic of Korea honored him and other Nova Scotia
veterans with peace medals for their service. After the war,
he cut wood for and built the gas station he owned and
operated in Robinsons. He was an electrician by trade and
later worked at the Halifax Dockyard for many years. He loved
working in his garden and looked forward each spring to
tilling and planting, often lining his tiny tomato plants
along his back deck, always draped with a large Canadian flag.
He was also an avid coin collector and hockey fan, rooting
annually for the Detroit Red Wings. But most of all, he was a
devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was so proud of
all of his grandchildren and would have done anything for
them. He was especially close to his twin grandsons Justin and
Jordan who lived with him since they were children. Jordan was
the light of his life for nearly 30 years, from his first
moments as a three-pound premature infant, through his heart
operation at five days old, his first six months in hospital
and all the days and years that followed. Papa and Jordan were
inseparable. Where you saw one, you saw the other; they always
relied on each other and it stayed that way for both until
Papa’s last breath. He is survived by his wife of 58 years,
Phyllis (Rowsell) Legge; daughters, Lynn, Lois (Richard), Ruth
(Mike) and Joanne; grandchildren, Justin, Jordan, Chelsea,
Dylan and Michaela; brother, Bernard; sisters Cathy, Sheila
and Marilyn. He was predeceased by sisters, Edith and Elsie;
brothers, Robert and Fred. Memorial service will be held on
Wednesday, June 1st, 2016 at 1pm in the Atlantic Funeral
Homes, Dartmouth Chapel, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth. Reception
will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 160, 703 Main
Street, Dartmouth, following the service. The family sends its
deepest gratitude to all the caregivers who helped at home
during Charlie’s final days. Your compassion and care will
never be forgotten. Flowers are greatly accepted or donations
may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 160 or
Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada.

KEAST, Lloyd
Harold (16 Oct 1930 - 08 Jun 2016) - Lloyd died quietly
Wednesday night at Victoria Hospital after a long battle with
a familial tremor and Parkinson's disease. His passing suited
his character. He was a kind and gentle man who seldom
demanded centre stage. The little he said was always worth
hearing and his life was rich with experience. His five-year
naval career included a trip through the Panama Canal and
across the Atlantic to be inspected by the Queen during her
Coronation ceremonies. The navy also gave him the electronics
training that eventually led to work at two DEW line sites in
the Canadian Arctic, a job for Bristol Aerospace during the
construction of the Avro Arrow, and a decade of work for Bell
Canada installing and maintaining transmission towers
throughout northwestern Ontario. Then he retired and worked
even harder on his Woodside, Manitoba farm for more than 25
years. Lloyd's family is planning a private memorial service
for friends and family on a date yet to be scheduled. Lloyd's
remains will join his first wife, Hazel, at Brookdale,
Manitoba in a private ceremony. Lloyd's second wife, Agnes
Copping, resides in Gladstone, Manitoba. Lloyd's surviving
children and grandchildren will pass on tales of his character
and his sense of humour to his numerous great-grandchildren
and great great-grandchildren. In lieu of gifts, flowers and
cards, the family welcomes donations in Lloyd's name to
Parkinson's research. (the Winnipeg Free Press 11 Jun 2016)

AVERY, Ainslie
(Ibbs) - Reverend, UC CD BA M.Div. Ibbs passed
away on May 27th, 2016 at the age of 90 years. Ibbs left the
following remembrances: Ainslie Ibbs and his identical twin,
Charles Ian were born in Shackleton, Saskatchewan. Ibbs was
born September 10th, 1925. Ian was born one day later. Their
Dad was a general merchant, their mother a former school
teacher. The great depression drove the Avery's north to
Paddockwood in 1931. The twins reached the nearest one room
school, a mile and a half away by dog team in the winter and
spent summers at the family's Emma Lake cottage. Both Ian and
Ibbs played hockey and fast ball. Shortly after completing
their last years of school in Regina, both joined the Royal
Canadian Navy Reserve and entered World War II along with tens
of thousands of their fellow Canadians. Ibbs served on the
H.M.C.S Whitby, crossing the Atlantic on convoy duty, Ian
served on the H.M.C.S Ontario. On Feb. 25, 1950 Ibbs married
the love of his life, Minnie Christina Goplen, R.N. in St.
James United Church, Montreal. Six months later, they returned
to Saskatchewan where Ibbs took his theological training. Four
sons and a daughter followed as the family moved from Dundurn,
to Norway House, St. Aidan's (Victoria, BC), Knox United
(Prince George, BC), St. John's United (Pointe Claire, Quebec)
and City View United (Ottawa). Ibbs enjoyed the outdoors
lifestyle tremendously during his time in Norway House and
Prince George - travelling by dog team in the winter and canoe
in the summer at Norway House and managing a scout troop in
Prince George - camping in the snow included. Ibbs said that
each of these postings was a glorious little touch of heaven.
Ibbs and Min retired to their beloved Victoria in 1987, a long
cherished dream, but before bowing out from active preaching
for good, they served at the Ahousat First Nation reserve near
Port Alberni for several years. Dad was proud to be a member
of the Saltaire's, the Sons of Norway and the United Empire
Loyalists. In Ibbs' words "It's been a glorious ministry,
thanks to God's continual blessings, and a perfect wife."
Left to mourn Ibb's passing, is his loving wife Minnie, her
sisters Jenny Gjesdahl and Elsie McLeod, sons John (Nancy),
Cameron (Laurie), Howard (Sheila), David (Meow) and daughter
Lonni-Marie (Michael), grandchildren Ainslie (John) Sean,
Christopher and David (Cameron), Christina and Luke (Howard),
Gung and Max (David), Avery and Ariel (Lonni-Marie), great
grandchildren: Oliver and Lola (Christina), Blake, Che and
Luke (Gung), Aria (Max), and Brexsley (Luke). The family
wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the wonderful
caregivers from Beacon, VIHA, Dr. McNaughton, Dr. Steinhoff
and Oak Bay Lodge who helped Dad through the last years of his
life. Donations in Dad's memory can be made to the various
churches Dad preached at. Ibbs' funeral will be held at St.
Aidan's United Church, 3703 St Aidan St., Victoria, BC on June
30th at 2 PM, followed by a reception. (The Victoria Times

WASH, Ronald
Thomas (06 Apr 1924 - 17 Jun 2016) - died on June 17th at
the age of 92. Preferring the challenges of life to the
guaranteed existence, he lived an extraordinary life. Ron was
born on the Isle of Dogs, Millwall, London - much favoured in
history by royalty as a place to exercise their dogs. He was
educated at Greenwich Royal Hospital School in Holbrook,
Suffolk. The School was originally started in the reign of
William III and Mary II in 1685, for the sons of seaman and
lightermen on the Thames Waterway. At age 13 Ron built his
first tube radio to listen to the Saturday BBC British
football or cricket games. At the age of 15 he joined the
Royal Navy as a boy air electrical apprentice. He served
throughout WW2 on various RN air stations. He notably trained
pilots on the operations of cockpit components when he was
posted to Trinidad, where one of the key training centres was
located. At war's end, he married the love of his life,
Georgena (Jean) Thomson and together they raised 4 children,
Marilyn (Robert), Andrew (Lisa), Philip and Martyn (Lorie). In
1948, Ron was seconded to the Royal Australian Navy and served
aboard HMRS ships. He moved on to Jervis Bay's Naval Air
Station Nowra, New South Wales and transferred to the Flinders
Naval Electrical Depot. The sign over the door proudly
announced, "Good connections – Good results". He
helped train the first R.A.N. air electrical artificers -
engineers who are skilled at repairing avionics systems in the
field. In 1954 after completing his R.N. service, Ron joined
the Royal Canadian Navy at Shearwater and served on VS 880, VS
881, and VS 40. He made several trips on HMCS Bonaventure
including crossing the Arctic Circle. After retirement from
the Navy, Ron worked for Nova Scotia Power Corporation as a
Scheduling Engineer for ten years. One of his proudest
accomplishments was his contribution to the Lingan Power
Station. Ron and Jean adopted Canada as their new country,
became Canadians and lived a fruitful and exciting life in the
Halifax region. Besides living in Australia, they traveled the
world including 3 trips to China, and several to each of the
Philippines, Cuba and Switzerland. Ron was an avid woodworking
hobbyist and enjoyed making fine teak furniture. He
contributed continuously to many charities and in particular
those helping and assisting children and Canadian doctors in
Africa. He leaves behind his soulmate Jean of 69 and a half
years and their children and grand children: Mathieu (Alicia),
Vanessa (Peter) Thomas, Anna, Lennah, Evan (Edith) and Graham
(Lina) as well as his great grand children, Jack and Aria. The
family would like to warmly thank Ron's caregiver, Valerie
Croft for her extraordinary work and dedication to assisting
him during his final year. Private internment of his ashes and
a celebration of his life will be held at later date.

MORGAN, Allan
C. - Born May 9, 1934 in Wayne, Alberta. Passed away June
6, 2016 at the age of 82. Al was an Air Traffic Controller at
YVR for over 30 years. He was also a skilled pilot.
Immediately following graduation from Western Canada High
School he enlisted in the Air Force on a "short"
commission. Following flight training, he flew Mustangs with
403 Squadron for a number of years, transitioning to the Navy
reserves VC922 Squadron flying sub hunters up and down the
west coast following his move here. That not being enough
excitement, Al took up flying an Avenger modified for water
bombing; extracurricular money he used to call it. In his
youth, Al was an intercity basketball player. He was also a
Caddy Master at Calgary Golf & Country Club, having
started at the age of 13 and got his love of golf from seeing
firsthand what a great sport it was. He happened to caddy for
Bob Hope, Johnny Langdon, Bing Crosby and Phil Harris. Al
would carry a 1 handicap from his 20s well into his 30s. He
also beat his age twice in his later years. The winter was for
snooker. He had more than a few stories of missing school as a
teen to play, as well as how his skill often paid his bills
while away at the various schools he attended through his Air
Force and ATC years. He was well known in the East Vancouver
Snooker Community during his day, for the snooker hall was a
weekly hangout away from work. He was long retired before he
gave that habit up, golf though he never gave up. He loved it
to the end, at 82 he was still out there. Predeceased by his
loving wife Irene Elizabeth of over 50 years of marriage.
Survived by his two sons Clint and Craig, grandchildren
Brittany, Lane, Hailey and Olivia, his twin brother Ralph,
brother Len and sister Iris. Respected by many, he will be
missed. (The Province 18 Jun 2016)

BAILEY, Harold
F. (Hal), LCdr, RCN - On Sunday, June 12, 2016 Hal
passed away at St. Joseph’s General Hospital in Comox after
complications of a heart attack he suffered a few days before.
He was born in Truro, N.S. 92 years ago to Fred and Etta
Bailey, the eldest and last surviving member of a family of
six children. He will be lovingly missed by his wife of 67
years, Alice (nee McGivney). He is also survived by his
children Brian (Jeannie) Halifax, NS; Philip (Joy), Kingston,
Ont.; Anne Bailey, Langley, BC; Barbara (Dave) Mellin, Comox,
BC; Alan (Brenda) Ashdale, NS. He was predeceased by his
daughter Mary Noreen Bailey. He will be sadly missed by his
grandchildren Paul, Graeme, Mark, Paige, Sarah, James, Fraser
and Campbell, seven great grandchildren, and many nieces and
nephews. Ace (his nickname given by his chums in the navy
years ago) grew up in Truro, Nova Scotia and joined the Royal
Canadian Navy at the age of 18. He served in the Second World
War and Korea, in military battle. His naval career took him
from the rank of Seaman to Lieutenant Commander. One of many
achievements of which he took great pride was as Chief
Security Officer for one of the Queen and Prince Phillip’s
visits to Canada. After his sea service, Hal and Alice spent
40 years on the Meander River Farm in Ashdale, Nova Scotia
that was their pride and joy. He loved hunting, fishing,
sharing stories and jokes, working hard on the farm, eating
from his many gardens, sharing the bounty with family and
friends. They finally felt the maritime winters and the large
farm were too much and they relocated to the Comox Valley 12
years ago. Hal enjoyed the “11 months of summer” and
enjoyed not using a snow shovel. He and Alice made a new and
wide circle of friends. Hal joined the Comox Korean Vets, and
continued his hunting and gardening until he went into
hospital four days before he passed away. He passed away
quietly with dignity and grace. He would have been miserable
not being able to tend his garden and do for himself, being so
very fiercely independent. He was also able to know that his
beloved Pittsburg Penguins hoisted the Stanley Cup just before
he died. He lived a long and rich life. We are sorry to see
him go, but we were blessed to have him here. The family would
very much like to thank all the doctors and nursing staff in
Emergency, ICU and Dr. Doug Anderson for guiding Hal along for
the past twelve years as a wonderful family physician. Special
thanks to Father Joe Killoran, Chaplain Brian Ducedre, and
Stephanie Jones. Cremation has taken place and there will be a
Memorial Mass at Christ the King Catholic Church on Tunner
Drive, Courtenay, BC on June 25th, 2016 at 11:00 AM. A private
family reception will follow. (The Hants Journal 20 Jun 2016)

MARSHALL, Harry
John (17 Dec 1963 - 16 Jun 2016) - DIED AS HE HAD LIVED
... Thinking of family, friends and relatives before himself.
Harry, son of the late John Bolt Marshall, leaves fond and
cherished memories to his mother Nancy Irene, his brothers
Bill, Geoffrey, his twin Robert and his sister-in-law Karen,
his three children, who he loved dearly: Christopher, Kylie
and Tanner, also a host of friends who he admired, respected,
cared for and loved in his own individual way, those from
before he joined the navy, while he served and afterward as
well. The lives he has touched and memories he shared with
them will continue always. For all these and his numerous
relatives; uncles and aunts; cousins; nieces and nephew; a
huge heart felt thank you to you all for being a part of his
life. Harry's last wish was not to be mourned, but remembered;
nor would he want a funeral or service. To be cremated and his
ashes scattered. Some at Blast Hole Pond, where the cabin once
stood; some to the Atlantic from Signal Hill and the rest by
his Father. As time passes, once a year, raise a glass of your
favourite beverage, wine, beer or coca cola and remember. On
the first Sunday afternoon after his death a remembrance of
Harry's life will be held at his brother's home, 177 Gower
Street. A chapter is completed; turn the page and close the
book (written by Harry on his deathbed). A non-religious
remembrance celebration of Harry's life will be held at 177

great-grandfather and uncle. He leaves behind his loving and
devoted wife, Delma whom he called DJ. He is predeceased by
parents, John and Christina; his first wife, Molly; brothers,

very young age. Jack proudly served with the Royal Canadian
Navy and fought for our country during World War II and Korea.
He played a large part in the invasion of Normandy. After
serving in the Royal Canadian Navy, Jack worked in the
dockyard for many years. He enjoyed Ball Room Dancing and
instructing and would have done very well on Dancing with the
Stars in his day. He loved golf (got a hole in one in 2004)
and his gardening especially growing his tomatoes with pride
and fish heads. We spent every year in October holidaying in
Hawaii. It was our second home and we will miss all the
friends we made there. They were our Ohana (that is family in
Hawaiian). All the dogs in the neighbourhood would go by and
look up the driveway to see if Jack was there to give them
cookies. Even when the garage doors were closed, they had to
be dragged away because he was not there. A special thanks to
David Ian (Erdi), for visiting his Uncle Jack while at home
and in the hospital. Uncle Jack enjoyed seeing them both.
Thank you to John (Joan) for selling his precious Oldsmobile
for his Uncle Jack. It was sad to see it go but it went to a

WILLIAMS, Frank
Ernest - Canada has lost another Second World War veteran,
at dawn, on Tuesday, June 21, 2016, when Kathleen came to take
Frank's hand to lead him on the path to his eternal home.
Frank was born in Winnipeg at the St. Boniface Hospital, on
January 1, 1923 to Thomas Percival and Kate Elizabeth
Williams. He spent his early years in St. Boniface, Teulon and
Carberry. At the age of 17, he enlisted and spent the next
five years in the Navy on a corvette in the North Atlantic
escorting convoys from North America to Britain. Returning to
civilian life, he met Kathleen Glover while singing in St.
Margaret's Anglican Church choir. They were married there in
1950 and enjoyed nearly 53 years together. They lived most of
those years in Windsor Park, where they raised their four
children. Dad worked in automobile sales and then automotive
parts sales, travelling from Northwestern Ontario to
Saskatchewan for many years. He loved to drive and he loved to
travel. Dad and Mom enjoyed many years at their cottage in
Victoria Beach, where he added two major additions to the
cottage. They enjoyed many summers with their family there. In
later years, Frank was a commissionaire at the Kapyong Base
and also volunteered driving CancerCare patients to their
appointments. Frank loved life and was determined to live to
90 years of age. Frank was generous with his "I love
you's" and in recent years, he especially enjoyed and was
grateful for any time he spent with family. He loved music,
singing, ice cream and anything sweet. He loved going to cheer
on his grandkids at their hockey games. He also enjoyed
watching baseball, hockey and football. He had a love of all
animals, but especially the Cocker Spaniels they raised from
puppies. He was a member of the White Ensign and enjoyed
getting together with the other members. Frank was predeceased
by his grandson Carter Frank Williams, in 1997; wife Kathleen
and daughter-in-law Bernice, both in 2003; and by his three
brothers: Jim, Ralph and Dave. Frank is survived by children:
Ted (Lucille), Gary, Pat (Frank) and Janet (Rob);
grandchildren: Laura (Joe), Steven (Ainsley), Mark (Analee),
Brent, Amanda, Mitchell (Stephanie), Matthew (Katie),
Jennifer; great-granddaughters: Mackenzie, Addison, Zara and
Chloe. He is also survived by his only sister Joyce (Glen)
Cawker, of Burlington, ON and her family. A special thank you
to granddaughter Jennifer, who faithfully visited Grandpa and
loved him so dearly. The family would also like to thank the
wonderful staff of Tower Seven South at Deer Lodge for their
kindness, care and compassion. In keeping with Dad's wishes,

THOMPSON,
Joseph Victor (Vic) (09 Jun 1925 - 22 Jun 2016) Vic passed
away peacefully with Edith, his wife of 62 years, at his side.
Vic was born in St Boniface, Manitoba to Joseph and Annie
Thompson, both new immigrants from Northern Ireland. He
attended St. Paul's High School in Winnipeg and, as soon as he
was of age, joined the Royal Canadian Navy. During WWII he
served in the Atlantic as a wireless telegrapher on several
ships including the HMCS Kootenay and the HMCS Outremont. He
also volunteered for the War in the Pacific, though
thankfully, it ended before he was deployed. After the war, he
attended the University of Manitoba, earning both a Bachelor
of Arts and a Bachelor of Social Work. His first professional
job after graduating was with the Children's Aid Society in
Brandon, Manitoba where he met colleague and fellow social
worker, Edith Close. Within a year they married and moved to
Seattle where Vic worked at the King County Juvenile Court,
the Bremerton Child Guidance Center, and later, the University
of Washington. He went on to earn a Master of Social Work from
the University of Washington and a Doctorate of Social Work
from the University of Southern California. In 1969 he became
Professor and Director of the Social Work Program at

he accepted the position of Director of the School of Social
Work at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Vic and Edith had
three children, Moreen Spracklin (Frank), Susan Riddle
(Blaine), and Geoffrey Thompson (Janet). Together, the family
enjoyed camping vacations, canoe trips and activities such as
hiking, skiing, swimming, and tennis. Vic, ever the innovator,
used a sleeping bag cover as an early prototype of the now
popular child carrier backpack, to carry his young son up the

active. In 1990, following his tenure at MUN, he and Edith
retired to Kelowna where they delighted in years of family

BATEMAN, John
Steven, C2HT (1968-2016) - Our beloved son Steve passed
away at his home in Cobble Hill on June 23rd in the quiet
company of his family and cherished canine companion Willie.
Born into a military family at Red Deer Alberta, his youth was
spent relocating between various Canadian Province's and
Germany before he joined the Royal Canadian Navy at the age of
19. It was in high school at Lahr however, that he acquired
his moniker "Jake" and it stuck. Steve served 22
years in the RCN touring Pacific Rim countries, including
ports in Russia. Many a top-deck chili cook-off competition
was won by Steve. Perhaps, seeking a more sedentary life, he
took early retirement and dug in on Vancouver Island where
blue skies or grey, sunshine or rain, he took to the woods on
hunting forays or enjoyed the solitude of fishing local lakes
and streams. He often loaded his own ammunitions and tied his
own flies. Steve did not ever mind coming home empty handed.
He was well read and often recounted minute details equally
about war history and munitions as the history of BC's gold
mining towns and his own community. Steve knew joy in wood
carving, decoy ducks being his favorite subject and on
occasion carved his own pipe bowls. He built intricate models
of ships only after he exhausted his passion for tanks. As a
Senior Hull Systems Engineering Technician 6 years with
Babcock Canada, his colleagues remind us he was a valuable
member of the Victoria team working to maintain and restore
Canada's fleet of submarines on the West Coast. Steve valued
his privacy and often played his cards close to his heart; but
we have grown to know he gave selflessly and generously to his
comrades, neighbors and community. In our time of grieving we
have found comfort from his many friends locally and across
the country that have expressed their sadness of his untimely
passing. A wonderful son to us, his parents, Jack and Velma,
Steve also leaves behind son John and daughter Sarah; sister
Wendie and brother in law Glenn; nieces Julia and Nicole,
nephew Paul; uncles, aunts and cousins will miss him dearly.
We hope you will join us to celebrate Steve's life 2 PM
Saturday July 9th at H.W. Wallace Burial Centre, 5285 Polkey
Road, Duncan BC. For whether we live, or whether we die, we
are the Lord's. Roman's 14:8 (The Victoria Times Colonist 02

HOBBS, John
Edward, LCdr, RCN - was born on July 29, 1925 in
Ottawa, Ontario. He loved to downhill ski in his teens, but he
already showed signs of the work ethic that he displayed the
rest of his life, working on farms in the summers and around
Ottawa as a delivery boy the rest of the year. When he was 17,
he followed in his father's footsteps and enrolled underage to
fight in the war. He chose to serve in the Navy and became a
signalman due to his keen eyesight. He served on HMCS
Royalmount in the Battle of the North Atlantic. After the war,
he decided to stay in the Navy, attending McMaster University
as an officer cadet. It was in Hamilton that he met his wife
Audrey Hill. They were married on May 4, 1951. In 1952 their
son Brian was born, and the next year he was posted to England
for officer training, where he attended the coronation of her
Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Different postings followed in
Halifax, Ottawa and Esquimalt. He was variously the XO of the
destroyer Athabascan, Staff Officer of HMCS Carleton, Captain
of the minesweeper HMCS James Bay, Navy Liaison officer for
the Sea Cadets in BC and ROTP Supervisor at HMCS Discovery.
Having attained the rank of Lt-Commander, he decided he did
not want to leave the new family home in Coquitlam, so while
working full time as ROTP Training Officer he completed his
teacher training at UBC. Daughter Sandra and son Sean joined
the family. He left the Navy in 1968 and began working as a
teacher in Maple Ridge. His administrative experience and
natural leadership led him to become first the vice-principal
of Westview Junior Secondary School, then the principal of
Pitt Meadows High School. He retired in 1983, much beloved by
staff and students alike. At this point he became a
globetrotter, travelling to destinations such as China,
Mexico, Great Britain, Europe, the southern US, South America
and the Caribbean. He also spent long months at Fintry
enjoying the view from the deck and skippering a pleasure boat
on Okanagan Lake. In his later years he suffered from dementia
but was able to live at home with the support of his wife and
family, until at the age of 89 he moved to his final home,
Three Links Manor in Kelowna, where he passed away on June 13,
2016. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, June 30th
at 10:00 am at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield
Road, Kelowna, BC. If you wish to send a condolence, post

PARSONS, Bruce Robert Patrick -
Born 1925. Passed away peacefully on June 13, 2016, in Caribou
Memorial Veterans Pavilion, St. John's, N.L., at the age of 91
years. Bruce was born in Shanghai, China in 1925, a son of Dr.
Walter S. Parsons of Montreal and Isobel (Hayward) Parsons of
Manuals, N.L. He left Shanghai at the age of seven years to
attend school in England and then KCS in Windsor, NS. At the
age of 17 years, Bruce joined the RCN and served on the

war, Bruce worked for a short time in Quebec as an editor for
two newspapers. In 1945, he went into business for himself
buying and selling vessels of all types and sizes; his
favourite being Newfoundland schooners and jacks. His largest
vessel was the H.M.S. Calypso (2814 tonnes). Bruce was very
well-known on the Halifax and Lunenburg waterfronts and was
dubbed 'quite the character'. He continued to work until his

travelled the world but his favourite place was Newfoundland
and that is where he spent his last two years and is now

MADDEN, Andrew
William - Age 92, of Halifax passed away Friday July 1,
2016, in Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII, Halifax.
Born in Arichat, he was the son of the late William and Alice
(Samson) Madden. Dad took his terminal diagnosis in stride and
wrote the following: My name is Andy Madden. As I'm leaving my
earthly life, I'm leaving behind four lovely daughters and a
son, Pat Dickie, Steven Madden, Debbie Flemming, Connie
Boraski and Kim Salter. I have always been proud of my
children. My career had me move to many places and therefore
my daughter, Pat was born in Hamilton, Ont.; Steven in Port
Colbourne, Ont.; Debbie in Edmonton, Alta.; Connie in
Oakville; Kim in Port Credit, Ont. My wife Germaine (Poirier)
Madden helped our family adjust to the many moves. Gerri was
my confidante, trusted partner, and always my greatest
supporter who was instrumental in allowing me to have a
successful life. I have kept Gerri's ashes with me and now I
will share the same and we will be buried in her birthplace,
West Arichat, next to her father and mother and also Father
Doucette, who married us on her birthday, June 14, 1948. I was
in the navy in the war and in the D Day invasion of France I
was on the HMCS Cowichan, a Bangor-class minesweeper of the
31st flotilla. I was very fortunate to have a challenging and
exciting career erecting thermal power plants and utility
recovery boilers for the paper industry. I worked in the
United States, Britain, Brazil, Lago, Nigeria and every
province in Canada. I was so in tune with my work that I came
to think of my boilers as 'humanoids' and communicated with
them to maintain their reliability. My life was enriched by
managers of the various plants. After 24 years of working with
large manufactures I decided to start my own company MBB
Mechanical Service Limited in Halifax, I was president and
founder of the company for 20 years. Since I am on the way out
I wanted to share some of the things I've learned: find
someone to love and be loved, find your passion (mine was
cars, boats, and my work), then apply hard work and
determination to realize your vision and you will experience
the joy in life. Surround yourself with 'good people', be kind
to others, and become 'good people'. A funeral service will be
held 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 6th in Our Lady of Assumption
Church, Arichat. Father Doug MacDonald officiating. Burial to
follow. The family would like to thank the nurses at Camp Hill
Veterans' Memorial Building 4th Floor East. (Dad called them
his angels). Also Dr. Michael Tilley, who cared for Dad many
years. He was his trusted physician but even more he and his
family were well-loved friends. In lieu of flowers, donations
can be made to Parish of Stella Maris Pastoral Unit, West

DAHLIE,
Hallvard (14 Feb 1925 - 25 Apr 2016) - passed
away peacefully at the age of 91 at the North Shore Hospice in
North Vancouver surrounded by his family. He was a beloved
husband to Betty and an involved and caring father to Brenda
(David) Brant (Tenley), Lisa (Bill) and Mark (Radha). He took
great delight in 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Hallvard led a life of many dimensions, which he had lately
recounted in his memoirs. He was born in Norway, immigrating
with his family to Canada at the age of 4. Here he discovered
firsthand both the joys and the hardships of a homesteading
life, living in a granary with his parents and older sister
and brother, riding a freight train to a new life in the
Bulkley Valley, planting potatoes and trapping rabbits, but
also learning to ski and play the violin and accordion. He
left home at 16, worked as assistant lighthouse keeper at Cape
St. James, joined the navy in 1942 while still underage, and
then developed tuberculosis. Being bedridden for a year with
only books to occupy his young mind, he later translated his
love of literature into his teaching profession, initially in
small BC towns (New Denver, Telkwa, Smithers and Kitimat),
then in West Vancouver before completing his Phd at the
University of Washington and having a full career as a
professor in the Department of English at the University of
Calgary from 1967-1990. Over the years, he and Betty (married
for 65 years) made many wonderful friends who shared their
love of literature, history, art and music, hiking and skiing
in the mountains, or playing golf. As a family, we inherited
those passions, and together we also shared many special
occasions with his siblings and their families. He lived the
last few years in his West Vancouver apartment, enjoying
mystery novels, beating his visitors at Scrabble, travelling
to Hawaii with family for golf and sun, and watching the big
ships from his window. He spent each day visiting Betty who
lived for several years in the warm environment of North
Vancouver's Cedarview Lodge before she passed away last year
from Alzheimer's. Hallvard's last wish was to play another
round of golf with his older brother Jorgen, but this was not
to be. He is survived by his brother; he was predeceased by
his parents Chris and Else and his sister Martha. The family
would like to give special thanks to Dr. Greg Phillips and
Nurse Next Door, in particular Daye, Merle, Leanne and Laxman
during his last year, and to Dr. Andrew Sear during his last
month. The family also appreciated the warmth and kindness
extended to Hallvard by the many hospital and community care
staff that supported him the last few years. Given that
Hallvard had a wonderful celebration on his 90th birthday
surrounded by friends and family to share memories and
affection, there will be no service at his request. Donations
if you wish can be made to a Hospice society or charity of
your choice. (The Calgary Herald 15 Jul 2016)

KNUTSON, Walter Reginald - of
Thunder Bay passed away peacefully in Bethammi Nursing Home on
July 11th, 2016, two days after his 91st birthday. Walter was
born in Port Arthur on July 9th, 1925. In 1944 he graduated
from Port Arthur Technical and Commercial High School with a
major in electricity and promptly joined the Royal Canadian
Navy proudly serving his country until the end of World War
II. Walter earned his Electrical Certificate in 1949 and his
employment included United Grain Growers, Knutson Brothers
Construction in partnership with his brother Ralph and many
years with the engineering company Barnett McQueen. In 1968 he
began a satisfying 30 plus year career as Electrical
Superintendent at Valley Camp Inc. in Thunder Bay. Walter
married his love, Dorothy Ann Harrower on September 21st, 1951
and they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2011,
shortly before her passing. He was a devoted husband and
father, his pride and joy being his 3 children and 5
grandsons. Walter was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran
Church, the Thunder Bay Naval Association and the Norwegian
Canadian Association. Taking great pride in his Scandinavian
heritage he passionately studied the Norwegian language,
traditions and history and travelled to the annual Nordic Fest
in Decorah, Iowa for many years. His special talents were
carpentry, cabinet making and motor mechanics. He was creative

toys and furniture to fine kitchen cabinets, beautiful
hammered copper bowls and lanterns and even a leaded glass

avid interest in ships and aircraft and aero-modeling. In his
early years he enjoyed hunting and fly-fishing, patiently
tying his own flies. He loved the outdoors and had a deep
appreciation for nature and wildlife. He was well read, an
amazing story-teller and had extensive knowledge of both world
and family history. Walter and Dorothy enjoyed many driving
holidays in Canada, the northern U.S. and journeyed to Norway,
England and Scotland to explore their heritage. They

roses, flowers, vegetables and flowering trees around their
home. Walter is survived by his children Deborah, Jennifer,
and Robert and his five grandsons; Aaron and Zachary Ramsay
