COOK, D. Glenn, LCol,
RCN / C.A.F. (21 Jan 1935 - 26 Oct 2018) - Glenn, 83, died
suddenly on October 26, 2018 in Ottawa, ON. He leaves his loving
wife of 61 years, Audrey Cook (Gilchrist), daughter Susan (Joe
Hincke), granddaughters Alexandra and Carolyn (Kyle Stanley);
sisters Gail Cook-Bennett and Nancy Cook Johnson and their families;
sister-in-law Dorothy Hayley; and many friends from serving 35 years
in the RCN and Canadian Forces. Glenn was predeceased by his sons,
Stephen and Michael. Glenns enthusiasm for flying began when he was
very young and continued during his career as a naval aviator during
which he flew 17 types of aircraft accruing over 4000 flying hours.
He flew from the HMCS Bonaventure and later off the USS Wasp and USS
Intrepid while an exchange officer to the US. He commanded HS 423
Squadron from 1979-1981. In retirement, Glenns passion for flying
continued. He built two planes - a Murphy Rebel and later a Vans
RV-7. Cherished moments ensued as Glenn welcomed family and friends
for a flight, he was delighted to demonstrate his aerobatic flying
skills including performing impromptu air shows above the lake at
the cottage: executing barrel rolls, loop-de-loops and always
tipping his wings to signal to Audrey. One of his great joys was to
spend time at the lake with his family, raising the family flag up
the flagpole which he had constructed from old parts of a swing set,
teaching his granddaughters to drive the boat and later to operate
the questionably-intuitive cottage plumbing system. Glenn was a
voracious reader, writer of poetry, and self-published author. His
book, Vignettes of a Canadian Naval Aviator, describes the highs and
lows of his military career. He was an active volunteer at the
Canada Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa and a very proud member
of the Smiths Falls Flying Club. A Celebration of Life will be held
in Glenns honor on Wednesday, November 21, 2018 12:30 - 2:30 PM at
Beechwood Cemetery, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa. In lieu of
flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice. (Ottawa

DUNSMUIR, Robert
Comlin, LS.EM1, RCN - Born to Robert and Eileen Dunsmuir, December 10, 1936.
Known as Bob, Robert and Duns, Dad passed away November 11, 2018. It
was calm and it was peaceful, Dad's kidneys had had enough. He was
The man behind the voice of Dunsmuir Super Service and the CKDA Sea
Reports. Twelve years a navy man, Dad spoke like a salty sailor, his
language peppered with curse words but never the really bad ones. He
was mercurial, strong-willed, thoughtful and loyal. If Dad found a
friend in you, you were friends for life and gifted a nickname…Bulge,
Dirty Ernie, Pard, Megahole and Damn Cop, to name a few of many.
Married to Julia, the love of his life, together they raised a
family, travelled by motorcycle, motor-home and boat, gathering
friends and stories and dogs. Lots of dogs and Dad loved them all
and the last one, Tucker, his best friend in the two years since mom
died. Dad was predeceased by his parents, his wife Julia (Her Very
Own Self), brothers Dave and Chappy and hands the reins now to his
brother Wayne. Survived by his children, Terril (Frog) her husband
Kevin (The Heavy) and granddaughter Brittney (Damn Kid). Daughter
Shelley (Go-Go Working Girl) and her husband Alan (Geeker One). His
Son, Jordie (Jo!) and his wife, Paula (Sweetpea). As well as many
nieces and nephews who thought the world of their Uncle Bob. Dad
spoke often of his gratitude and affection for Doug Buchanan for his
untold years of loyalty and friendship, as does the entire family.
There is much thankfullness to the nurses and doctors of the 4th
floor Jubilee Hospital for making Dad's short stay so comforting.

1963 - LEGAL HANGING AGE BEHIND BARROW RIDE
"What is the legal hanging age in
Canada?" This question was argued by Ldg. Sea. Robert Dunsmuir
and Ldg. Sea. Archie Henderson, both serving in the Fraser. During
the exchange Ldg. Sea. Dunsmuir said before witnesses that, if he
was wrong, he would personally push Ldg. Sea. Henderson from his
home to the ship in a wheel barrow. He lost and all too late found
that Ldg. Sea. Henderson lived in Belmont Park, some six miles from
the ship. Saturday morning saw Ldg. Sea. Henderson weigh in at 238
pounds, comfortably settle himself on several pillows and be wheeled
down the highway by 140-pound Ldg. Sea. Dunsmuir. However, as a
sporting gesture, in view of the weight difference, it was agreed
that Ldg. Sea. Henderson would push Ldg. Sea. Dunsmuir up all hills.
After logging five and a quarter miles, they arrived at the corner
of Admiral's and Esquimalt roads, an ideal spot for deciding that
honour was satisfied and recuperation called for.

BADER, Robert (Bob),
P1ET, RCN / C.A.F. (01 Nov 1940 - 11 Nov 2018) - Bob's
unexpected time of passing into eternal peace caught us all off
guard. His final peace after a few months of unknowns was a lesson
for us all: Be prepared. Married 56 years to Marlene (Butcher), whom
he met 75 years ago at the tender age of 3. Bob spent 25 years in
the military as an electrician on various ships, then worked for a
number of years in Dockyard as an electrician and was president of
the union for a time. His sense of fairness to employees was
paramount in his thinking and he followed through to help those who
needed a voice. Bob's faith in God became a living reality about 18
years ago. He lived it, in a quiet and unassuming way. Even as his
wife I met a new Bob who, over 18 years, settled into a contented
and settled soul. He was seen and known as a caring, knowledgeable
person. A heartfelt thank you to all in the VGH Emergency ward for
your professional yet touching sensitivity to Bob and his medical
needs. To you Dr. Roos, for your astuteness to an overlooked
problem. To pastor Don Johnson and Debbi; a steadfast love you both
live - of which Bob gained much in his final hours. To you all at
Grace Baptist for your prayers, which were answered, Bob now rests
in God, and was ready - expressed that in such a verbal way. Loving
father of Raymond, Leann (Randy Cairns), Dennis (Angela), and Sandra
(Randall Smithson). Devoted papa of Jessica, Daina, Sarah and
Matthew. Dear brother of Sue (Ron Robinson), and brother-in-law to
Yvonne Bradstock and the late Jacquie (Brian) Schaufele. Loving
neighbour to Glenn and Anna Maglio, Chris Waters and Tom McCarthy.
He will be fondly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, extended
family and friends. Visitation will be held at Sands Funeral Chapel-Colwood,
317 Goldstream Ave., on Thursday, November 22, 2018 from 1:00-4:00
pm. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, November
24, 2018 at Grace Baptist Church, 2731 Matson Rd. Langford, BC.
Reception to follow in the church hall. Burial to take place at

of British Columbia and University of Western Ontario. He took his
first job in recreation in Ontario at Port Arthur and Red Rock. He

and then as a buyer with Northern Meats. He was known for his
loyalty to friends and family and willingness to lend a hand. He
volunteered as a coach for his son's hockey and football teams.
Friends fondly reminisce over grand fishing adventures. Dad was
always up for a card game and was happy when he could finally play
crib with his grandchildren. He was very proud of his grandchildren
and enjoyed watching them grow. When Dad moved to Neepawa, he met
Jean. They enjoyed socializing and fussing over their furry
children. Dad was a real softie when it came to animals and no
animal ever went unfed with him around. Having Jean as his partner
for 20 years was truly a blessing and we are so grateful to her for
all her love and care of Dad during their time together. In keeping
with Dad's wishes, there will be no formal service. We are also
thankful to Country Meadows Personal Care home for their care of
Dad. We love you Dad and you will be forever missed. (Winnipeg Free

HEGGIE, George -
Peacefully in the evening of November 17, 2018 George Heggie, aged
92 years, passed away at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg. He is
survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Irene, his daughter Pam
(Glenn) Hayward-Remple, her family, grandchildren, Sean (Corrie),
Justine (Mark), Alysa, and great-grandchildren, Ruby, Kensie and
Layla; as well as his son Rick and his family. George was born in
Scotland, but moved to Winnipeg with his family at a very young age.
He joined his brothers serving in the Navy during the Second World
War, after which he returned to Winnipeg where he met Irene Edwards,
who in 1947 became Irene Heggie. George's career in medical sales
took their growing family across Canada, spending time in Calgary,
Montreal and Oakville, but he finished his career and they spent
their retirement in Winnipeg. They made the most of retirement,
enjoying golfing, curling or anything that let Irene socialize and
gave George an audience for his jokes and stories. George loved
Canada, and they spent time every year exploring the country from
coast to coast, whether it was visiting friends in British
Columbia's wine country or returning to the same hotel in Prince
Edward Island where everyone knew them. As much as they enjoyed
travelling together, much of his retirement was spent focusing on
his grandchildren, with countless hours spent building forts, going
for long walks or offering advice whenever needed. Outside of his
family, George became the neighbourhood mayor, making friends with
everyone on his street. In particular, many hours were spent with
his good friend, Jerrold, who was always available to fix anything,
or just to sit around talking and admiring the many deer that made
George's back yard home. Anyone serving George, be it cashier or
server, needed to factor in some extra time, as no one escaped a
joke or smart comment, always followed by his big smile and a laugh.
Cremation has taken place and per George's wishes, there will be no
public service. All who knew George are encouraged to say a toast
with a glass of his favourite spiced rum. He was loved by many, and
though he will be missed, all of us are left with memories and life
lessons that will stay with us forever. (Winnipeg Free Press 24 Nov

RIESS, Charles
Robert - On November 21, 2018 at the age of 93 years, Charles
Robert Riess passed peacefully at Grace Hospital. He was predeceased
by his wife of 42 years, Leona, on September 6, 1992, at the age of
65, and his sister Marjorie (Bob). He is survived by his sons, Rob
(Barbara) and Rick (Jean) and grandchildren, Britt (Matt), Michael
(Kim), Sarah (Kevin), Christopher, Daniel and Jack as well as
great-granddaughters, Claire, Charlotte, Olivia and Alice, and
nieces and nephews, Wendy, Cathy, Gary, Sandy, Donald and Bruce.
Charlie was born in Winnipeg, August 30, 1925 and resided there his
entire life. He graduated from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate and went
on to get his Bachelor of Arts degree from United College. Following
his service in the Royal Canadian Navy, Charlie returned home. Soon
thereafter, Charlie met the love of his life and on October 15, 1949
married Leona Young, daughter of Agnes and Don Young. In 1950,
Charlie began a career working for his father-in-law at the small
family business, George H. Young Co. (GHY) and it was there where he
found his calling and became its President in 1967. Charlie was a
natural leader and was the perfect person to guide the future of
third generation ownership of GHY. Building relationships came easy
to him. His character, warmth and engaging personality were traits
that endeared him to so many friends and associates. Charlie was
respected as a principled leader by all those that knew him within
the customs brokerage industry as well as by those with whom he
worked. He was especially admired for his business acumen,
integrity, fairness, common sense and his genuine care for all of
those that were part of his GHY family over more than five decades
of his work life. Charlie loved to connect with people and that was
reciprocated and reflected in the connections he made with people
throughout his life. His charismatic personality, elegance,
infectious smile, humour and extraordinary charm, endeared him to
all those to whom he came into contact. A member of numerous boards,
charities and business organizations, of particular import, were his
years as a Director and Board Chair of the Canadian Society of
Customs Brokers (CSCB), President of Kiwanis and years as director
and VP of the Winnipeg Football Club. Charlie was a dedicated leader
and brought great enthusiasm, energy and creativity to every
community role wherever he served. Charlie was an energetic and
competitive personality who loved all forms of gamesmanship and had
a passion for sports including golf, tennis, squash and snooker. In
his college days, he excelled in snooker. That prowess was later
demonstrated at the Manitoba Club years later where he garnered
several Club Championships. It was perennially one of his favourite
business haunts and his longtime participation in the Saturday
morning leagues and competitions were a source of great fun and
camaraderie. Charlie's passion for golf was the perfect vehicle to
connect with family and friends. For close to 50 years, St. Charles
was his home of golf. He loved to play and compete, but at the heart
of it, was the joy of time spent with his buddies. One of Charlie's
greatest golf memories was his trip to St. Andrews in Scotland with
his two sons. Golf also influenced his winter home choice in Naples,
FL at Bear's Paw Country Club. Charlie said it was the best decision
he ever made. Charlie and Leona had many happy years together and a
very active life while building family legacies and traditions.
Christmas Eve parties at the Riess' were legendary and were the
focal point in celebrating the return home of so many friends from
distant lands as they reunited with their families at Christmas.
Christmas Day was often followed with a family road trip with a
collection of families to ski or snowmobile destinations and to
bring in the new year. Countless summers were spent at their beloved
Victoria Beach where Charlie and Leona created a lasting legacy with
deep rooted family experiences and connections that will hopefully
endure into future generations. Papa Charlie was devoted and proud
of each of his grandchildren. He was blessed to have had
grandchildren in all the locales that he lived. He loved every
moment to engage with each one of them and made a priority of being
there for every event, activity, hockey game, tennis lesson,
concert, or his favourite, Grandparents Day at school. He will
always be remembered for his infectious smile, caring personality
and as a loving son, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and
devoted friend. We carry Charlie's memory in our hearts and cherish
the love and support he gave to us and to all those whose heart he
touched. We will miss him! Special gratitude to Mei Ling and Chuck,
Teresa, Toni, Elvira and Tony for their devotion and care over the
last 10 years. We are forever grateful that Charlie could live a
dignified life because of your love, patience and kindness. A
celebration of Charlie's life will be held in the summer of 2019. In
lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the In Memory of Charles Riess
Fund at The Winnipeg Foundation, 1350 One Lombard Place, Winnipeg,
MB R3B 0X3, 204-944-9474. (Winnipeg Free PRess 27 Nov 2018)

job at Lafarge Canada. He started as a labourer and through hard
work and persistence ended up as their local Purchasing Agent. He
was a proud member of the local Lafarge family, he spearheaded many
of their work and social affairs and truly loved the company and his
fellow workmates. He also loved his community and was involved in
the inception of the Booster Club for the Junior Oilers/Blazers. He
will fondly be remembered as Mr. Shootout during intermissions at
the Blazer games, complete with stripper music and the patented leg
kick. He was also proud to coach many kids in softball and hockey as
his kids grew up playing those sports that he loved. Please join the

COOK, Jack, ERA
(17 Feb 1924 - 20 Nov 2018) - It is with sadness in our hearts that
we announce that Jack passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 20
at the age of 94. Beloved husband of the late Beatrice, of 68 years.
Jack is survived by two sisters-in-law, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Beth
and Jean, as well as by his daughter Colleen (Peter), his grandsons,
Chris (Lily) and Casey (Katelyn), and his great-granddaughter
Jacklyn. Jack was also very fond of his many nieces and nephews. He
was predeceased by his parents John and Jean and his brothers, Bill,
Hugh, Robbie, Doug, Ian and Ken. Jack was born in Winnipeg where he
attended Riverview and Kelvin schools. Shortly after graduating, the
Second World War broke out and Jack enlisted in the Royal Canadian
Navy where he served as an Engine Room Artificer on the minesweeper
HMCS Georgian. At the conclusion of the war Jack attended the
University of Manitoba graduating with a degree in Interior Design.
In 1968 he moved to Ottawa as the Interior Designer for Carleton
University. When he retired in 1989 he held the position of
Director, Physical Plant. Jack was an ardent curler and painter (he
curled with three of his brothers for several years). In any
organization that Jack belonged to, he was generous with his time
serving in many volunteer capacities. He became president of both
the Fort Rouge and the R.C.M.P. Curling Clubs. Jack and his wife Bea
spent a number of years travelling in both Canada and the United
States in their house trailer before building a cottage on the Upper
Rideau Lake where they enjoyed many summers. Although retired, Jack
"worked" diligently on several environmental concerns as
President of the Upper Rideau Lake Association. In the Cook
tradition Jack also enjoyed playing board games. He loved a game of
chess with both his father-in-law in the early years and his
son-in-law although he could not beat either. The family would like
to thank Dr. Pham and the caring staff at the Queensway Carleton
Hospital. A visitation will be held on Monday, December 3 between
12:00 noon and 2:00 p.m. at the Pinecrest Visitation Centre, 2500
Baseline Road, Ottawa. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the charity
of your choice would be appreciated. (Winnipeg Free Press 01 Dec

GILLESPIE, Alastair
William, Lt (P), RCNVR (01 May 1922 - 19 Aug 2018)
The Honourable Alastair William Gillespie,
P.C., O.C., DLitt
After an outstanding
innings of 96 and having “captained the side very well”, Dad
quietly left the field of play in Toronto for the last time. Devoted
husband of Diana Christie Clark for 63 years, and loving father of
Cynthia Webb (Ian) and Ian (Lynn). Extremely proud and adored
grandfather of Vanessa (Chip), Katie (Nick) and David Webb, Meredith
(Pat) and Ian Gillespie. Beloved great-grandfather (GG) of Maddie
and Finn Greene, Sarah, Michael, Emma and William Gambarotta, and
Georgia and William Glinski. Fondly remembered by Shirley and Gavin
Clark, Ian and Nancy Clark, Sheila Clark and many nieces and
nephews. Predeceased by his cherished brothers, Ian (WWII) and
Andrew and dear sister, Catriona.
Born in Victoria, B.C.,
son of Erroll and Catharine (Oliver) Gillespie, Dad attended St.
Michael’s School and graduated from Brentwood College in 1941. He
briefly attended UBC before entering Royal Roads Naval College for
Officer Training in 1941 (RCNVR). Attaining the rank of Term
Lieutenant in 1942, he served on naval convoys across the North
Atlantic. Following the death, in action, of his brother Ian, an
RCAF Beaufighter pilot on December 22, 1943, he joined the Fleet Air
Arm as a fighter pilot flying Corsairs.
After the war, he
attended McGill University (BCOM) and during his final year met the
love of his life, the beautiful Diana Clark on a blind date. “She
is one in a million”, he wrote to his parents and they were
married in 1947. Having been selected as a Rhodes Scholar from B.C.,
they left for Oxford where he read Philosophy, Politics and
Economics at Queen’s College.
Returning to Toronto
with an Oxford M.A., Dad began his business career at W. J. Gage
& Company, a leading educational publisher in Canada. He moved
up the ladder rapidly becoming a Vice-President and Director. In his
spare time, he and some friends formed Coffee-Mat Services, an
automatic coffee vending enterprise. Terrific value at 10 cents a
cup with real cream, Dad would hasten to add. If not busy enough, he
also taught Marketing courses at the University of Toronto Business
School and later earned his Masters of Commerce degree. His business
career moved to the conglomerate Canadian Corporate Management as a
Vice-President and he served as President of several operating
subsidiaries.
He described his
parents as being “quite exceptional, stimulating and far-sighted”
and having instilled in him the importance of public service and
volunteerism, he ran as a Liberal candidate for the federal riding
of Etobicoke in 1968 and was elected to the House of Commons in
Prime Minister Pierre E. Trudeau’s government. In 1971, he was
appointed the first Minister of State for Science and Technology. He
was re-elected in 1972 and 1974 and served as Minister of Industry,
Trade and Commerce (1972-1975) and Minister of Energy, Mines and
Resources (1975-1979).
After leaving politics,
following defeat in the 1979 election, he returned to business as
Chairman of the brewer, Carling O’Keefe Limited, Chairman of the
National Westminster Bank of Canada, and Chairman of the Scotia Coal
Synfuels consortium as well as serving on the board of other private
corporations. In the early 1980’s, Dad established Scotia Synfuels
to acquire and rehabilitate the former Gulf Oil Refinery at Point
Tupper, Nova Scotia. Disappointed that his vision could not be fully
realized for the benefit of Cape Breton and the Atlantic provinces,
he and the board of directors made the decision to sell the
properties in 1992. He returned to the beer business in 1995 and
with W.P. Wilder, acquired an interest in Creemore Springs Brewery
which they subsequently sold ten years later after having received
assurances the highly successful microbrewery would not move from
its wonderful location in Creemore, Ontario.
His involvement in
community service was extensive. He served on many boards including:
the National Ballet School, the Canadian Paraplegic Association,
Lyndhurst Hospital, The Champlain Society, the Scottish Studies
Foundation, The Gage Research Institute, and was President of the
Canadian Opera Company.
In 1998, he was
appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada for his “maverick
entrepreneurial spirit”, amongst other accolades.
Other significant
recognition included receiving the ‘Scot of the Year Award’ in
2003 from the Scottish Studies Society and the degree of Doctor of
Letters, honoris causa, from Guelph University in 2008.
A highly accomplished
rugby and cricket player from his Brentwood College and Royal Roads
days, Dad continued with squash, tennis, skiing, fishing, golf and
bridge which he enjoyed immensely with his family and many friends.
Other than British
Columbia, his favourite retreat was his country property ‘Highwood’.
It became the gathering place for five generations of family and
their friends. He relaxed on weekends by undertaking various
projects to continuously improve the property. He was passionate
about preserving the rural environment and supported local
initiatives such as the Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust and Green
Durham Association.
In his eighties and
underscoring the importance he attached to family history, he wrote:
‘Made in Canada – a Businessman’s Adventures in Politics’ as
a reference for his descendants. It turned into a somewhat larger
project than he first envisioned and was published in 2009.
He will always be
remembered for his warmth, charm, generosity, sense of humour and
distinguished good looks.
The family is very
grateful to Elmo, Dad’s caregiver and companion of nine years, and
Emy for their compassionate care. We also wish to thank the capable
and considerate staff at Christie Gardens where Dad resided for a
short period of time.
The family will receive
friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles – Newbigging
Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 2:00
to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 14th. A celebration of life will
be held at Christ Church Deer Park in Toronto on Saturday, September
15th at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation to a charity of
your choice relating to the environment or health would be
appreciated. (Humphrey Funeral Home)
