FANE, Peter Edward,
V65292, RCNVR/ C2NS, 40973-H/E / LCdr, RCN / C.A.F. (17
Dec 1925 - 14 Oct 2013) - With much sadness, his daughter announces
that Peter Edward Fane passed away at home on Oct. 14, 2013. He was
predeceased by his wife, Elaine, and is survived by Kathy (David),
grandchildren Matthew and Amy and great-grandchildren Hailey, Nathan
and Emma, who he was thrilled to hold for the first time the day
before he died. Dad was born and raised in James Bay, attending
South Park School and Victoria High School. He joined the R.C.N. at
the age of 17 and was proud to serve for 37 years, including action
in World War II and the Korean War. Dad and Mom enjoyed the many
cities they lived in throughout his career but were very happy to
finally return home for good and settle in Saanichton. There, they
both indulged in their love of gardening, fishing and traveling and
were thrilled to spend lots of time with Matthew and Amy. Dad
traveled frequently to England where he had great times visiting
with his nephew, Roland, who was very dear to him. He and Mom were
also very close to their nieces and nephews in the U.S. and they
always enjoyed getting updates on all their activities. I would like
to thank the BC Ambulance paramedics who tried so hard to save Dad
and who were so kind to us at a very stressful time. There will be
no service at Dad's request. In lieu of flowers, donations to the
Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation (sphf.ca/contribution) would
be greatly appreciated. Dad, you may be gone but you will always be
in our hearts. (Victoria Times Colonist 18 Oct 2013)

FISHER, Norman,
Petty Officer 2nd Class Radioman Special, RCN / C.A.F. (retired 30 Nov 1975) (24 Apr 1931 - 11 Sep 2013) - Norman Alexander Fisher son of Robert
and Ada Fisher. Better known as Norm by his friends who are many.
Norm was born in Taber and grew up with his older brother Ian in
southern Alberta. As a young man, he joined the Navy and served in
communications as sparker, radio, teletype and signalman. The
sparker and radio would later claim the better part of his hearing.
He married Bertha Crossman AKA Vicki, taking in a step son John then
having 3 children of his own, Robert, Dixie and recently deceased
Terry. Grandfather to 7 and great-grandad to 4. Typical of most
servicemen, travel was a big part of the early years spending only 1
or 2 years in any one place and not always with his family. He
served all across Canada and away from home on several ships. One
stint took him to the isolated Naval Radio Stn in Frobisher Bay, one
of the early cold war initiatives. After moving to Victoria, Norm
decided to retire with the rank of Petty Officer. He enjoyed many
hours at the Dockers Club and the Legion. To all his friends and
family, yet as we remember him, Norm is signing off. -.-. .-..

passed away on May 29, 1998 in his 80th year after a brief illness.
Jack, a truly unique individual, is survived by his loving wife,
Gertrude whom he knew since childhood and married at St. Francis in
the Woods, West Vancouver, in 1942; daughters, Diane Quinn, Darlene
Booth, Vicki Strachan and their families which include six
grandchildren. His brother, George; parents, Harriet and John Frost
of North Vancouver predeceased Jack. On a family trip to England at
age 11 Jack met an uncle in the Royal Navy that led him to join the
Sea Cadets as soon as they returned to North Vancouver. He would
ride his bike from Kings Road down Lonsdale and take the ferry to
reach his class in Stanley Park. he then worked on the Empress of
Russia as messenger boy and made trips to the Orient at age 16 while
waiting for his name to be called to join the RCN. Getting
impatient, he attempted to join the RN in Hong Kong but was told to
complete the return journey then come to join after that. When he
returned to Vancouver his call to the RCN was waiting for him. He
was the youngest member on the Esquimalt base and, according to
tradition, asked to ring in the New Year 1936 on the ship's bell. He
joined with a class of 60 of whom only about 5 survived to 1945. On
convoy duty he witnessed bombings and sinkings; his ship was caught
in a hurricane and took them off course to the South Atlantic with
no lifeboats and major damage to the ship's bridge. An ice breaker
freed his ship after it was caught in ice on the St. Lawrence when
they were the last ship out. His ship took part in the chase for the
Bismarck until they had to put in to Iceland for fuel. During the
war, he served on many destroyers, even on Fairmiles, ever ship he
was on came to grief after he was transferred. His destroyer took
Churchill to the historic mid-Atlantic meeting with Roosevelt. He
served on HMCS Ontario for about 3 years following the war and
reluctantly retired from the Navy in 1957. He had built a beautiful
home in Victoria, with the help of his contractor father (who built
many homes in North Vancouver) but both he and his wife's families
were on the North Shore so they moved to West Vancouver in 1958. He
immediately start work to raise their young family which included at
the time Diana and Rose Marie Hall, the daughters of deceased
neighbours. First, he worked in the Post Officer during their move
to the present building on Georgia Street and then became and
inspector of Weights and Measures for the Department of Consumer
Affairs. He enjoyed travel and covered most areas of BC at one time
or another as well as travelling by air or sea to check coastal
fishing and logging areas not accessible by road. After 21 years in
the Navy he proceeded to work 20 years n the department before
retiring. He joined the Masonic Lodge in Halifax during his time
there was a Life Member of both the Chiefs and PO's Association and
the Royal Canadian Legion at Lord Nelson Branch 60 where he had
worked many years on the Executive including serving as president.
He lived and enjoyed life in so many ways - particularly his garden
at the home he has lived in for the past 32 years with Gertrude -
always ready to welcome his daughters and sons-in-law, David,
Michael and Rob and grandchildren, Zoe, Claire, Blair, Sean, Lauren
and Kyla. He was not able to get around easily these past few years
and appreciated the home and garden they had created all the more so
after deciding to stay instead of choosing an easy existence in a
condo. They day before he entered hospital jack was out weeding and
cutting the grass. He too his dogs Bonnie and Cruzer for their run
the same day. I know he is happy to have made a quick get-a-way and
not prolong our worries, but he will be deeply missed. In lieu of
flowers, donations to the Sea Cadets, HMCS Discovery Stanley Park
would be appreciated. The family would like to thank the medical and
nursing staff at Lion's Gate Hospital who worked so hard and
heroically for Jack.

ROY, Raymond Oliver,
CD, CPO2, C.A.F. (21 June 1956 - 27 March 2018) A prairie boy
who became a sailor, a seeker of challenges and an adventurer, who
loved his family above all, passed away on March 27, 2018. A man who
threw himself into experiencing life. His presence will be missed by
his family. His much loved wife Mary, his children Caleb (Mistee),
Tosca (Ryan & granddaughter Avery) and Lukas (Gabrielle). His
siblings Rene (Heather) and Loretta. The Payne family and their
spouses, and his many nieces and nephews on both sides. He missed
his parents - Tryntje and Lionel - who passed before him. Raymond
was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, 21 June 1956. He served in
the Canadian Army and Royal Canadian Navy where he spent most of his
career as an Electrical Maritime Technician. A life that took him
around the world with his loyal companion and rubber chicken - Mort.
He loved the Navy and being at sea. He was, rightly, proud of his
service. He continued to assist others after retirement, as an
active member of the Campbell River Volunteer Search and Rescue.
Raymond brought an intense passion to everything he took on -
reconstructing Land Rovers, making ancient armour, scuba diving or
researching family history. He acquired deep practical skills that
made him the go-to-person for family and friends. As he had hoped,
Raymond passed at home with his family. Cancer took his life but it
never took his spirit. The family would like to thank the nurses,
doctors and care aides who provided the care that helped him pass
away on his terms. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to
Campbell River Search & Rescue (www.crsar.ca). Services will be

grew up in an orphanage. When Britain was sending boys over to work
on farms in Canada to replace the young men who were being enlisted
for war, George was sent to a farm near Kingston Ontario, where he
arrived on the “Athena” in 1938. When he became of age, he
managed to get to Kinsgton and enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy.
As they were in need of cooks, he enlisted and was sent for training
on the HMCS “York” in Toronto and then to Halifax, to await
sailing for Newcastle upon Tyne to join the crew of the HMCS “Haida”,
serving with her until the end of the war. On D-Day, which was his
21st birthday, he was in the English Channel, down in the hold
helping to hand up ammunition, and witnessed the sinking of their
sister ship, “Athabaskan”. On his return to Canada and having
worked his way up to “chef” during the war, he reenlisted and
was based at CFB Stadacona, Halifax, where he served on several
ships for 28 years until his retirement and then worked personally
for several Commodores and Admirals. He met his wife, Evelyn, when
the ship was docked in Plymouth, England and were married August 11,
1945. In February, 1947, Evelyn and his baby daughter arrived at
Pier 21 in Halifax with the War Brides. Upon full retirement they
moved to the South Shore. He was a very active member and honorary
president of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #23 Lunenburg, where
he was involved with the Poppy Campaign and always participated as
leader in the Remembrance Day “Memories” night at the Community
Centre. He will also be fondly remembered for always arriving bright
and early on New Years Day to prepare the “MooseMilk” for the
reception later that day. As an avid dancer, wherever he went, if
there was music, he was the first on the floor and never failed to
get the whole crowd moving. He was also a devoted member of St.
Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, where he served in the church choir,
Session, and faithfully supported the many activities within the
church. George deeply loved his community of Lunenburg and proudly
seized every opportunity to promote it. He is survived by his
daughter, Linda Leduc, Alberta; grandchildren, Angela, Alex,
Tiffannie, Nicole; several great and great-great grandchildren and
companion, Annette Dibbin of Blue Rocks. George was predeceased by
his wife, Evelyn. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of
the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy #3, Lunenburg where the
Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 23, will hold a legion tribute on
Tuesday at 6:45 followed by visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. A Memorial
service to celebrate George's life will be held at a later date in
St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Lunenburg. Interment will be in
Hillcrest Cemetery, Lunenburg. In Lieu of flowers, memorial
donations may be made to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church or the
Veteran’s Units of Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital.

McDONALD, Cyril,
Anthony, LCdr, C.A.F. - age 58, of Mount Uniacke, passed away April 10,
2018 in 7A Palliative Care, the VG Site, QEII, Halifax. Born in
Gambo, N.L. he was the son of Mildred (Parsons) McDonald and the
late Cyril John McDonald. Cyril spent his early years in Gambo, N.L.
before moving with his family to Wabush, Labrador. While growing up
in Wabush, he was an active participant in many sports including
hockey and soccer, but his true passion was his involvement in the
Sea Cadet Corps. This eventually led him to join the Canadian Navy
at the age of 17. After eight years serving as a Naval Communicator
in the Submarine Service he took his commission to become a Naval
Officer in 1986. He served aboard many ships before finishing his 29
year career at the Warfare Centre at CFB Stadacona. Upon his
retirement in 2004, he became a military defence consultant with
Valcom Consulting. In 2012 he was elected as the Municipal
Councillor for the Mount Uniacke region of the Municipality of East
Hants. He held this position until his passing. He was a prominent
and well-liked figure in the Hockey Card Collecting Community for
many years. Also, he was an avid golfer who looked forward to his
annual trip with his brother-inlaw, Gord to play the Florida Links
along with his brother, Terry. Another of his passions was his
involvement on the Entertainment Committee for the Wardroom at CFB
Stadacona. Survived by his wife, Lynn McDonald; son, Jonathan
McDonald, Calgary, Alta.; daughter, Jenna McDonald (Nick Caron),
Beaver Bank; grandchild, Jayda Slaunwhite, Beaver Bank; brothers,
Terry McDonald (Roxanne), Denis McDonald (Brenda), Joe McDonald
(Geraldine); sisters, Corina Benson (Gord), Patsy Sweet (Andy),
Robin Vandervleuten (Rob), Bev McDonald (Bob); and many nieces and
nephews whom he loved dearly. Predeceased by his father, Cyril;
infant brother, Anthony and oldest brother, Bob. A memorial service
will be held on Saturday, April 14th, in the Officer’s Wardroom at
the Juno Tower CFB Halifax Stadacona, Halifax, at 11 a.m. Donations
may be made in Cyril’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society.
"Not too often one gets to scribble his
own obituary notes so I will make an attempt at my own - Born in
Gambo NL in Mar 1960, into a family of 8 siblings, there would be no
doubt that the Navy would muster at least one of us. After
graduating HS in Labrador, my dream of serving with the Navy would
become reality. I would set sail from my little nest of home, find
and married the most beautiful woman in the world (who continues to
be at my side today 34 years later). Blessed to be in the
communications brotherhood I had the honour of sailing beneath the
waves prior to commissioning and fulfilling an almost second career.
Yet, to my chagrin, Cancer began to erode my body to where it will
bring me today; besetxxx extinction I had fun, I enjoyed life, I did
everything that I wanted to do, but most importantly I stayed in
love with my soul mate. The only part of human life that I believe
that I will truly miss. Today the human medicine man has been able
to hold of the grim reaper to this point but I find I am beginning
to lose the uphill battle. It is not easy, nor was it without a
struggle. My effort was valiant some would say, others may argue
differently. So in the end I made too many friends to honour in a
short post and too many tales to keep too many of you out of
trouble. I thank you for your friendship I thank you for your
kindness and simply put, thank you for just being there in times of
need. God bless and following seas my comrades." (written

SLUSKY, Morton Aaron
- Our much-loved dad and zaida died suddenly on
March 23, 2018, three months shy of his 94th birthday. Mort was
predeceased by his beloved wife Lee, his brother Irv and his partner
Fay Glass. He leaves to mourn his children Maxa and Cliff Chisick
and Jeffrey and Cindy Slusky; grandchildren Casey Chisick and Sophie
Milman, Josh and Laura Chisick, Daniel and Baillie Chisick, Lee
Slusky and Zachary Slusky; and great-grandchildren Lev, Jacob, Lyla,
Talia, Maya and Asher Chisick. Mort was born on June 27, 1924, the
elder son of Rae and Max Slusky. He grew up in the North End,
graduated from St. John's Tech, and worked as a dining-car waiter on
passenger trains before enlisting in the Royal Canadian Navy during
the Second World War. He trained as a radio operator and was
stationed at several locations in the Caribbean before the war's
end. After his discharge, Mort attended the Manitoba Law School and
was called to the bar in 1951. His brother Irv followed in 1953 and
they practised law as Slusky & Slusky until Mort retired in
1999. As a lawyer, Mort was admired for his honesty, integrity,
compassion and dedication to his clients, some of whom continued to
seek out his wise counsel long after his retirement. Mort and Lee
Rombom were married in 1949. They settled into the Grove Apartments
on Main Street and set about building their life together. Maxa was
born in 1952, and Jeff in 1961, about the time they moved to their
new home on Sweetwood Bay in then mostly undeveloped Garden City.
Worried about Maxa's diminutive 10-year-old, 50-pound frame, Mort
set about plumping her up with nightly Dairy Queen milkshakes after
dinner. (Mission accomplished, Daddy; thanks.) Mort and Lee shared a
traditional, loving marriage, rooted in their mutual devotion to
their children and, in time, to their three eldest grandsons, Casey,
Josh and Daniel. Tragically, Lee passed away in 1989, at only 62,
before grandsons Lee and Zach arrived to complete their family. Late
in his life, Mort was fortunate to meet Fay Glass, with whom he
shared nearly a decade of happiness until her untimely death in
2007. Mort was a devoted, loving zaida whose face lit up whenever
his grandchildren were near. He delighted in regular family dinners
and visits and that enjoyment grew even stronger when Casey, Josh
and Daniel married and provided him with three beautiful, talented
granddaughters who loved and respected him. And just when he thought
things couldn't get any better, great-grandchildren started to
appear about six years ago, recharging his batteries and putting an
indelible smile on his face. The lives of his six
great-grandchildren have been enriched permanently by time spent
with their Zaida Mort. Cursed with a lighting-fast swing and shaky
putting stroke, Mort was nevertheless an enthusiastic golfer well
into his ninth decade, and was rewarded with four holes-in-one for
his efforts. He served on Glendale Golf & Country Club's board
for several years. He passed his passion for golf (along with the
shaky putting stroke) on to Jeff, for whom it remains an obsession.
Mort's early life was steeped in Judaism and he remained invested in
Jewish customs and traditions throughout his life. He was a longtime
member of Rosh Pina Synagogue and served on its board of directors
for many years. Although reluctant at first, Mort grew to enjoy life
at Shaftesbury Park Retirement Residence, where he rekindled old
friendships and formed many new ones. He was an active and eager
participant in social programs and trivia competitions, where his
razor-sharp recall kept him well-stocked in Kit-Kat bars. Until the
very last day of his life, Mort carried himself with great dignity,
good humour, and a proud independence that will always be an
inspiration to his family. As a family friend, struck by his
gentlemanliness, memorably put it, he was "a man who wore his
tuxedo on the inside". Mort's family would like to extend
heartfelt thanks to the staff at Shaftesbury Park for treating him
with the kindness and respect he deserved. We are also grateful to
Dr. Terry Szajkowski for his extraordinary kindness, excellent care
and reassuring availability. A funeral service was held March 25 at
Congregation Etz Chayim, officiated by Cantor Tracy Kasner Greaves.
Pallbearers were Mort's five grandsons and his nephew Alan Slusky.
He will be loved, missed and remembered forever. Donations may be
made to Agape Table, Jewish Child and Family Services or another
charity of choice. (Winnipeg Free Press 07 Apr 2018)
