HMCS CHARLOTTETOWN 339
Halifax Class Frigate
She was floated up on 01 Oct 1994, and commissioned in CHARLOTTETOWN on 09 Sep 1995. In the fall of 1996 she took part, as a member of Standing Naval Force Atlantic, in exercises with ships of a number of eastern European navies. On 12 Aug 1997 CHARLOTTETOWN made a courtesy visit to the port for which she is named, and was the first Canadian warship to pass under the Confederation Bridge. Soon afterward she took part in the US Exercise United Spirit. She returned home on 17 Dec 1998, and late in Feb 1998 began a six-month stint with SNFL in place of Toronto, which had been ordered to the Persian Gulf. On 12 Jan 2001, CHARLOTTETOWN herself sailed for the Arabian Gulf, there joining the USS Harry S. Truman Battle Group in sanctions against Iraq. She again left Halifax on 17 Oct 2001, with Iroquois and Preserver, for the Middle East, this time on Operation Apollo to support a US-led coalition against international terrorism. The trio was joined in the Arabian Sea in De 2001 by HMCS HALIFAX, and conducted arms embargo operations and screening of other naval units in the area. CHARLOTTETOWN returned to Halifax on 04 Mar 2002. On 02 Mar 2011, CHARLOTTETOWN departed Halifax to participate in Op MOBILE (military intervention in Libya). During Op MOBILE CHARLOTTETOWN became the first RCN ship to be fired upon in anger since the Korean War - while patrolling the waters off north Libya when she came under fire from a dozen BM-21 rockets launched by Libyan Loyalists. CHARLOTTETOWN was relieved by HMCS VANCOUVER on 18 Aug 2011 and returned to Halifax on 02 Sep 2011. On 08 Jan 2012 CHARLOTTETOWN left Halifax, initially deployed to Op Active Endeavour (anti-terrorism mission in the Mediterranean), relieving HMCS VANCOUVER. On 13 Apr 2012, CHARLOTTETOWN joined CTF 150, conducting counter-terrorism operations in the Baltic sea. On 11 Sep 2012, CHARLOTTETOWN returned to Halifax. In June 2014 CHARLOTTETOWN completed her Halifax Class Modernization/Frigate Equipment Life Extension (HCM-FELEX) docking period. On 27 Jun 2016 CHARLOTTETOWN left Halifax to join NATO's Op Reassurance mission in the Mediterranean. During Oct 2016 she took part in the multi-national Naval exercise, Joint Warrior and returned to Halifax 19 Jan 2018. On 08 Aug 2017, CHARLOTTETOWN left Halifax to relieve HMCS ST JOHN'S on the Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG-1) in support Op Reassurance. She returned to Halifax 19 Jan 2018. In Aug 2018 CHARLOTTETOWN joined other Naval assets on Op Nanook, conducting missions and port visits in the Arctic region. In Aug 2019 CHARLOTTETOWN entered into an extended docking work period for maintenance and upgrades at the Irving Shipyards (ISI) in Halifax.
On 13 Mar 2024 HMCS CHARLOTTETOWN arrived in Halifax after sailing 5540 Nautical Miles, and spending 37 days-at-sea on Exercise Steadfast Defender. She also participated in Exercise Dynamic Guard 24 and Exercise Joint Warrior 24 with port visits in Ireland, Scotland and Iceland.

HMCS CHARLOTTETOWN 339 on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, Fisheries Patrol, Jan 2005 (RE01) Note the sea ensign - the ice snapped the halyard and it's wrapped around a wire on top part ship (RE02) STBD side from the bridge wing (RE03) HMCS CHARLOTTETOWN, January 2005, after her arrival in St. John's, Nfld., following her fisheries patrol on the Grand Banks (RE04) The three photos of HMCS CHARLOTTETOWN iced up were a result of a pretty severe winter storm off the Grand Banks. We ended up heading into St John's early because of the weather - we had a crew member get hurt and had to be medevac'd off the ship via Cormorant. Even St John's shut down it was so bad.
