LITTLEFAIR, John Munro, Cdr (MARE), RCN / C.A.F. - It’s with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John Munro Littlefair in the early hours of Sunday August 5, 2018 at the age of 83 in the Annapolis Royal Community Health Centre, where he had been admitted after suffering a heart attack at home. Born July 22, 1935 in Toronto, ON, the son of the late John Stuart Littlefair and Dorothy Winifred Munro, beloved and cherished husband of 55 years of Elcie (nee Haliburton), he was predeceased by his brother William and survived by his sister Anne. Devoted and much loved father of Sandra Nadine Millet (Edward) and Gregory John Littlefair (Angela). Proud and greatly cherished grandfather of Samantha, Gavin, Clair, Spencer and Danielle. John proudly served his country in the Royal Canadian Navy for 35 years, as a Marine Engineer. His career began at HMCS Venture, Victoria BC where he graduated as a naval engineer from VENTURE, class of 56. He then went on to RNEC Manadon College in Plymouth, England, where he sharpen his skills as an engineer. He served on several naval ships, seeing some tense moments during the Cuban missile crisis, and also spent time at National Defence Head Quarters, Ottawa. John was posted to England a few times throughout the course of his career. Besides studying in Plymouth, he also attended the Royal Naval College in Greenwich, England. He and his family particularly enjoyed his last posting to London, England where John served as the Canadian Forces Assistant Naval Attache, at the Canadian High Commission London. At 50 he ran the London Marathon with his son. John finished his career back in Victoria, at HMCS dockyard and while there earned his parachute wings on the jump course in Edmonton. Both his grandsons have followed in his footsteps and have also received their parachute wings. In retirement John continued to keep busy, enrolling in various college courses learning everything from woodworking to financial planning. He used his new skills to finish his cottage and build his and Elcie’s beautiful oceanfront home. John continued to be fit and active throughout his life and always found interesting activities and events for his kids and grand kids to join him in. He, and the love of his life, Elcie, also enjoyed travelling the world and completed many marvelous adventures and cruises. His family joined them on several memorable trips. He was the treasurer of the Good Neighbours club and an active member in his community. John had a keen mind, and a good sense of humour. Being around him was never boring. His enthusiasm for life and sense of adventure will be sorely missed. A funeral is being planned at New St Edward’s Anglican Church, Highway 1, Clementsport, Saturday August 18, 2018 at 2:00pm with a reception to follow after at the Royal Canadian Legion #221 Clementsport.

BROWN, Earl Allen - Passed away peacefully at age 92, after a brief illness, on August 1, 2018. Born in Stouffville, Ont., Earl was predeceased by brothers, Bill (Aline), Jack (May) and Mike (Betty). Earl proudly served his country during the Second World War, first briefly with the Merchant Navy and then enlisting with the Royal Canadian Navy. The end of the war found Earl serving aboard the minesweeper, Gaspe in Halifax Harbour and it was in Dartmouth that he met his wife of 66 years, Shirley (deceased). Earl was also predeceased by son, Michael; and leaves behind sons, Jim (Gail) and Peter (Carolyn) of Dartmouth; and daughter, Elizabeth of Ottawa. Earl was very proud of his grandchildren, Morgan, Joseph, Anna and Livia. Earl was a machinist for 64 years and was owner-operator of Earl A. Brown Machine Shop and the latter half of his career found his son, Peter following in his footsteps and working alongside him and eventually taking over the business. Earl was the treasurer for, and member of, the Trecothic Creek and Windsor Railway club for many years. Earl made many great friends at the club and he enjoyed greeting visitors as they arrived from his post at "Earl's Court". Earl spent his final years in Shannex Parkland in Dartmouth where he knew everyone by name and always had a joke or easy smile for anyone he met. He was independent until the very end, always backing his car into his parking space. Earl will be sorely missed. A celebration of life will be held for Earl in A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, Saturday, August 11th from 1-4 p.m.

GANNON, Donald R., PO.QR, V10256, RCNVR (served 27 Mar 1939 - Jun 1945) - On Tuesday, October 12th, 1999, Donald R. Gannon, late of Regina, SK, passed away at the age of 78 years. Predeceased by his father, Daniel; mother, Eva; brother, Clarence; and granddaughter, Paula Morey; Don is survived by his wife, Anne of 55 years; daughters, Barb Gannon and Pat (leonard) Wellings; grandchildren, Gary (Eleanor), Shawna, Andy and Laurie; and great-grandchild, Jesse. Don was born on July 19, 1921. He grew up in Regina attending Holy Rosary School and Balfour Collegiate. When W.W.II broke out, he was called to serve. He served the entire six years with the Royal Canadian Navy as a Petty Officer then returned home and worked for Cockshutt Plow, Simpson Hardware, Sherwood Co-op, Ashdown's and as a real estate agent. When Don retired from Sherwood Co-op he then worked as a Canadian Corps Commissionaire. Don devoted many hours to his garden and home. His main interests were the Sask. Gun Collector's Assoc., Wascana Pistol Club where he was a safety instructor and range officer and St. John's United Church. Memorial service will be held on Friday, October 15, 1999 at 2:00 P.M. in the Helmsing Funeral Chapel, 2210 College Ave., Regina, SK with Rev. Walter Logan officiating. A private family interment will be held at the Regina Cemetery. Flowers most gratefully declined. Dave is survived by his wife Sharon; two sons, Michael of Nanaimo, BC and Greg (Rebecca) of Paris, France; and newly born first grandson Max. Also surviving are father Michael; brother Michael; and nephew John Gallo; mother-in-law Jessie Smith, sister-in-law Heather Smith. Memorial service will be held in First Memorial Funeral Chapel, 4725 Falaise Dr, Victoria, BC on Monday, January 3 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or Hospice are appreciated.

GRANLIN, Deryck Keith, C2ET - passed away on February 3, 2001 at Greenwoods, Salt Spring Island at the age of 81 years. He spent many years in the Navy then later with RC Ferries. Predeceased by his first wife Nahlin in 1979. Deryck is lovingly remembered by his wife Sandra and her daughters, Jamie and Candy, his sons, Marc (Reene) David and Ian; grandchildren Ingrid and Paul. No service at Deryck's request. His remains to be scattered at sea.

GARDNER, Martin B. (Doc). C1MA, 40549-E, RCN (served 13 Aug 1938 - 12 Aug 1963) - born July 12, 1914 in Killaly, SK, passed away peacefully at home March 8, 2001. He leaves to mourn Anne, his loving wife of 60 years; sons, Ken and John (Kathy) of Campbell River, BC; daughters, Kathy Iannarelli (Joe) of Victoria, BC, Mary Wanlass (Mark) , of Los Altos, Calif; also 7 much loved grandchildren, Teresa (Ramiro) of Victoria, BC, Sheri (Chad), of Kelowna, BC, Jocelyn and Robyn, of Kitimat, BC; Brianna, Hans and Ken of Los Altos, Calif; great granddaughter, Brenna of Kitimat, BC. Martin enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1938; serving in the sick bay aboard the Warrior, Ontario, Margaree and Ottawa. In addition, he was an instructor in the medical branch at Naden. Retiring in 1964 as Chief Petty Officer 1st Class, followed by a stint as the 1st civilian employee on the Victoria City Police Station switchboard. Our heartfelt thanks go out to all the dedicated, compassionate team members of the Esquimalt Paramedics and Fire/Police in their incredible emergency response. At Martin's request there will be no formal service. A celebration of Martin's life will be held at a later date. FORBES, Robert, Royal Navy - Born 25 Oct 1887, Aberdeen, Scotland. Died 28 Jan 1942, Aberdeen, Scotland.  Robert joined the Royal Navy on 22 Apr 1915 and was discharge 21 Mar 1919. During the war, Robert served in HMCS Niobe and considered immigrating to Canada, but after the war decided to return to Scotland.

GAULT, Thomas (Tom), L/Writer, V38503, RCNVR (served 15 May 1942 - 08 Feb 1946) - of 624 Oxford St W., Moose Jaw passed peacefully following a brief illness. Tom was born December 24, 1917 in Moose Jaw. He served with the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II. Following the war, he was employed with the CPR and later as a court reporter for the Magistrate's Court. An accomplished penman, Tom achieved his Master Penman Accreditation. He shared his talents with many people and organizations. Tom was Past Master of the Doric Lodge and Past Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Mizpah Chapter. Predeceased by his brother, Bill, Tom is survived by his loving wife, Hazel, son, Gordon (Connie) and their sons: Dylan and Brennan. He is also survived by his brother, Art (Joey) - Newmarket, Ont., and their daughters: Lynne and Joeen and son, Jimmy, and by his niece, Janice and nephew, Bill. GRIFFEY, William Edgar (Bill), P2PW, RCN - of Sidney, BC passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on August 22, 2002. Bill was born, March 30, 1934 at Granum, AB. He received his education at the Granum School. He worked for Alberta Treasury Branches, served in the Canadian Navy and was employed by BC Ferries for 31 years, retiring in 1997. Bill is survived by Catherine, his wife of 45 years; his children, Shane (Joanne), Wade (maria), Pamela (Wayne) Potts, Warren (Elaine, Sandra (Paul) Bergeron, Debbie (David) Fairweather, 18 grandchildren and a sister, Mildred Jorgenson of Lethbridge, AB. He was predeceased by his parents, Edgar and Leola Griffey and a sister, Dorraine. No funeral by request.

GARDINER, Alexander, Sr., CPO EA 2c, V30577, RCNVR (served 01 Jul 40 - 12 Oct 1945) - passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 31st, 2002. He was the youngest child of Alexander and Agnes who emigrated from Scotland to Canada in 1914, and he was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on March 20, 1915, and moved with his family to Victoria in 1916. Alex was predeceased by his first wife, Evelyn, in 1967; sisters, Agnes, Janet, Lena, Kathleen; brothers, John and George, Alex is survived by his loving wife Frances; son Alex (Diane), daughters Kathie (Larry) and Barbara; stepson, Doug' granddaughters Kara and Lindsay; his extended family Lana, Brian, Parker, Liam, Roberta, Melissa, Darren, Sheryl, Griffin, Emerson, Avery and numerous nieces and nephews. Alex served n the Royal Canadian Navy during WWII from July 1, 1940 to October 12, 1945. He worked as an electrician and electrical planner at HMC Dockyard and, after his retirement, he worked for the Victoria Parks Department. Alex and Fran spent many enjoyable and memorable years as members of the Lake Hill Lawn Bowling Club. DOOLEY, James Samuel (Jim) - age 67, of Brooklyn, Hants Co., passed away peace-fully on Tuesday, August 7, 2018 in the VG Site, QEII, Halifax, surround-ed by his loving family and treasured friends, listening to his favourite Newfoundland songs. Born December 1, 1951 in Plate Cove East, N.L., he was the son of late John Thomas and Elizabeth Jane (Barker) Dooley. Jim was a veteran of the Canadian Navy and a proud sailor on the Athabaskan (282). After the Navy he went to work for Hefler's Mill. He loved sports, fishing, birdwatching, anything to do with nature and he enjoyed the great outdoors. Jim adored the love of his life Debbie, his daughters and grandchildren. He loved his family and it was very hard for him to say goodbye. Until we see you again; Jimmy Sammy..... Fly High. CLARKE, John Walter - Loved and never forgotten - John Walter Clarke of Lakefield, ON, in his 88th year, on Friday, August 3, 2018 at PRHC. John was an aircraft mechanic in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1952-1957 aboard the HMCS Magnificent. He later served as a dedicated firefighter for the City of Scarborough for 25 years. John is survived by his wife, Patricia (nee Cottrell) of 65 years; his three children Jennifer, Jeffrey and Sarah Collinson (John) and his grandchildren, Jessica, Rebecca and Benjamin. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no funeral or visitation. In his memory, his family requests donations be made to the Peterborough Regional Health Centre. (Toronto Star 11 Aug 2018)

LANE, Robert Mack (Bob) (14 Oct 1921 - 15 Jul 2018) -  Dr. Robert Lane - Born in Victoria, the only child of Eldon and Myrtle (Mack) Lane, and dying peacefully at Parkwood Court, his home for the last two years, Bob was predeceased by his wife of seventy years, Laura Kathleen (Cameron) Lane ("Kay") and his grandson Colin Sands McInnes. He is survived by his five children Ken (Julia), Mary Hughes (Bob), Susan McInnes (David), Bill, and Sandy (Julie), nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. After two years at Victoria College he studied medicine at McGill University, receiving his MD in 1944. He served first with the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps and then with the Royal Canadian Navy. After the war he earned a Diploma in Public Health from the University of Toronto, and in 1950 undertook postgraduate studies in internal medicine at Queen's University. In 1953 he was appointed director of the Victoria and Island Chest Clinic, a position he held until his retirement in 1982. He is a past president of the British Columbia Medical Association, the British Columbia Society of Internal Medicine, and the Board of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Wartime conditions saw Bob and his classmates entering medical school without completing a bachelor's degree. He corrected this by returning to University of Victoria (successor to Victoria College) and completing two BA's. He is a past president of the university's Alumni Association, and with his wife endowed the Bob and Kay Lane Graduate Scholarship in demography. Bob's family will honour him at a celebration of life in September. They thank Dr. Gary Nielsen, and the staff of Douglas House, of Parkwood Court, and of Wendy's Support Services, for the care given to Bob. (Victoria Times Colonist 10 Aug 2018)

LUNN, Vinetta Mary (nee Burke), WRCNS (23 Oct 1917 - 03 Aug 2018) - At 100 years in Montreal. Predeceased by her husband Hugh Lunn in 2011. She leaves her children Bridget, Anthony and Sarah, grandchildren Naomi, Isabelle, Anne-Mathilde, Catherine and Sebastian, and 4 great-grandchildren. Also her niece Roberta Young of Barrie and many Lunn nieces and nephews. Vinetta was born in Toronto to Anne Purtle (born of Irish parents from Galway and Cashel) and Gerald Burke (born in Joggins NS of Acadian parents). She attended Loretto College and St. Michael’s College (U of T) graduating with a BA in 1938. During the war she worked in Ottawa and Vancouver on government war effort jobs, then joined the Navy as a WREN. Posts included Halifax and Cornwallis NS and England where she worked in London until the end of the war and where her future husband was in the RCAF. All her life, she kept in touch with her many friends in the Navy. After the war Vinetta and Hugh married in Vancouver, had three children and moved frequently back and forth from Canada to Europe, including Vancouver, Montreal, Chicoutimi, Isle of Wight (England), Guernsey, Brussels and Zweibrucken (Germany). Settling in Ottawa in 1965, Vinetta worked at the public library and the National Gallery library. The last move was to Vancouver in the 70s where Vinetta worked at the UBC psychiatry library and where they lived on the waterfront for over 35 years in False Creek, Vancouver. In retirement she and Hugh loved to travel through North America and Europe, play tennis every day and read. Vinetta especially loved hosting her grandchildren in Vancouver every summer. There will be a funeral mass at St. Irenaeus Church (3030 Delisle, Montreal) on Sat. Aug. 11 at 9 a.m. followed by a reception.

MELANSON, Paul Joseph (Trapper), RCN - 78, passed away suddenly in QEII Health Sciences Centre on August 15, 2006. Born in Halifax, Paul was a son of the late Alan and Helen (Bourque) Melanson. Paul is survived by his wife of 56 years, Shirley (Redden); son, Paul (Dale), Ontario; daughters, Donna Baker (Robert), Halifax; Elizabeth Miller, Halifax; Catherine Potter (Paul), Hacketts Cove, and Beverlee Cox (Philip), Prospect; grandchildren, Karen, Dara, Niall, Dawn, Robyn, Daniel, Erin, Sean, and Mark. He is survived by brothers, William, Edward, and Raymond. He was predeceased by sisters, Helen Marie Cormier (Sister of Charity), Mary, Margaret; brothers, Adonis "Dunnie", Alan, and Tilmon. "Trapper" served 25 years in the Royal Canadian Navy with two tours in Korea. He retired from the navy in 1970. Upon retirement he worked for Stevens & Smith Insurance for 10 years. Paul was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, serving as president of the Bedford branch for three years. Paul was an active member in the barbershop choruses of the Atlantic Swells and the City of Lakes. He was an active member of the Chiefs and Petty Officers Association and Korean War Veterans Association. Paul was a long-time member of the Volunteer Fire Departments in Rockingham and Bedford. Paul was a well-known and well-loved member of his community, always ready to lend a hand to neighbours and strangers alike. His grandchildren brought him great joy in his retirement years. He had a passion for gardening and he was famous for his pickles. He could be found every morning at the Northcliffe Pool for his daily swim. Paul was known as the "candy man". He would hand out bags of candy to those he knew and also to those he didn't know. Paul loved to play the guitar and sing, famous for his Jimmy Durante, Ray Charles and Japanese song renditions. He had a great sense of humour and always had a good joke to tell. This wonderful man will be missed very deeply by his loving family, friends, neighbours, colleagues and all those whose lives he touched. Visitation will be in Atlantic Funeral Home, Bayers Road, Halifax, today from 7-9 p.m. and Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with a Memorial Legion Service being held at 7 p.m. Friday. The funeral service will be held in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Rockingham on Saturday at 10 a.m. with a reception to follow in the church hall. Cremation and burial will be at a private service at sea and Pleasant Hill Cemetery at a later date. Passed away peacefully with all his family at his side on Nov. 15, 2001. Survived by his loving family, wife Sandy, son Bill (Leigh) Gregoire, daughter Robynne (Simon) Mills. He also leaves his three precious granddaughters Morgan and Madelaine Gregoire and Lauren Mills; his extended family, Gord Neilson, Sue, Erin & Scott; niece Nicci; nephew Mark; great nieces Kendall and Teagan. Ray also leaves his family in North Bay, ON; uncles Pat (Betty) Gregoire, Art Gregoire and Elaine; and brothers Don, Steve and Robert; nephews Chris, Dale, Cory, Craig and Dennis; neices Debbie, Pam and Cheryl; great niece Jamie and great nephew Cody. Ray served in the RCN / CF for 27 years. GORDON, Jack Oliver, C2ER, 52016-E, RCN / C.A.F. (served 23 Feb 1960 - 23 Feb 1985)  - Born 1941, Victoria, BC. Passed on january 15, 2002 in 100 Mile House Hospital after a battle with cancer. Leaves to mourn mother, Myrtle Finch-Field; stepfather, Reg Finch-Field; daughter, Tracie (Conrad); sister, Noreen (Cal); brothers, Ted (Sandra), Reg (Carolyn) and nieces and nephews. Educated in Victoria Schools graduating from Victoria high school. Joined RCN retired after 25 years. Member of C&PO's Association and R.C.L. Memorial service held in HMCS Naden Naval Chapel, Wed., January 23 at 2:00 P.M. Flowers declined, may donate to charity of their choice.

GUTHRIE, Thomas Forsyth, P2AT, 26047-H, RCN / C.A.F. (served 01 Jan 1945 - 01 Jan 1974) - "Tommy's gone Awa". It is with great sadness that the Guthrie family announces the passing of Thomas Forsyth Guthrie on January 13, 2002 in Victoria, BC. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Vida; sister, Elsa; daughters, Carol (Roger) and Alana; sons, Scott (Leslie) and Steven (Louise); his cherished grandchildren, Terry, Christopher, Jacqueline, Simon, Camille and Lisa, great-grandchildren, Madison and Colin. Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1927, Tom immigrated to Canada in 1950 joining the Royal Canadian Navy. Many friends and even more stories were made there before his retirement in 1976, when he was "off to the races", training horse and forming more friends and stories. Tommy had a rich, rewarding life through his friends, family and many animals that kept turning up at his door. Never to be turned away, being taken in to the family instead. There was always a bowl of food for the cat at the front door, and a pot of tea for his friends on the stove. A memorial service will be held Friday January 18, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Luke's Church on 3821 Cedar Hill X Rd, Victoria. In lieu of lowers, donations can be made to the Victoria Hospice or the SPCA.

GWILT, Thomas Franklin, CPO.VS, 3143-E, RCN / R10358, RCNR (served 04 Apr 1938 - 17 Sep 1947) - born January 1, 1919, in Courtenay, B.C., passed away peacefully on October 14, 2003. He leaves his loving wife Alice, his children Sharon (Bill), Gary (Lauri) and Carol (Doug) and his grandchildren, Kelsey, Meagan, Casey and Carmen. He will be remembered as a thoughtful husband, devoted and generous father, father-in-law, and grandfather, war-time Yeoman of Signals, hard-working resort owner, part-time lighthouse keeper, loyal legion member and enthusiastic vacationer. A memorial service will be held at the Royal Canadian Bowser Legion #211 on Sunday, October 26 at 1:00 PM. Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, 565 W 10th Avenue, Vancouver, B.C. GLASSFORD, Lloyd Henry, P1RM, RCN - Suddenly at his home in Victoria, March 2, 2004. Lloyd was born July 17th 1928, at home, in Gibson's Landing, BC. He was the son, grandson and great grandson of Gibson pioneers. His early years were spent at various towns along what is now called the Sunshine Coast, where his father worked on Forest Service boats. In 1940 the family moved to Qualicum Beach where Lloyd Attended elementary and high school. During the Second World War Lloyd was a member of the Pacific Coast Military Rangers. In 1946 he joined the Royal Canadian Navy. He served in the Far East during the Korean Conflict, on board HMCS Cayuga. After his retirement from the RCN in 1967, Lloyd became a Correctional Guard. In 1974 he was promoted to Case Management Officer (now called "in house parole officer"). He retired from this in 1993 due to an injury to his knee. He then enjoyed retirement and fostered his love of antique cars. Lloyd was predeceased by his father R.J. (Bob) Glassford in 1972, his mother Margaret in 2001 and his sister Ruth Boyce in 1999. Hi is survived by his daughter Suzanne (Glassford) McCallum of Surrey, his son Lorne Glassford of Victoria, grandsons Sean and Brandon McCallum and Liam Price-Glassford, also two sisters, Bea Wray of Gibson's and Marion O'Toole of Celista. Lloyd will be greatly missed by his family and friends. His wishes were for cremation and no service. Those wishing to remember him are asked to give in his name ot a charity of their choice.

RITCHIE, Thomas Stewart, LS - It is with heartfelt sadness that the family of Thomas Stewart Ritchie announces his passing peacefully in Brampton on April 8, 2012. Tom was born January 30, 1924 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Daniel R. Ritchie and Janet (Binnie). He served as Leading Seaman of the Royal Canadian Navy Coastal Services, 65th Flotilla in the English Channel during World War II. He began his own company, R&M Plastics, in 1966 in Brampton, Ontario. Tom received his second Paul Harris Award from the Brampton Rotary Club in 2010, was an avid golfer and impressive magician. Tom will be forever missed by his loving wife of 67 years, Betty M. (Tomney) and devoted children Brian (deceased 2003) and Wendy Ritchie, Bob and Linda Ritchie, Susan and Frank Romanelli; wonderful grandchildren Todd and Jenni Ritchie, Shawn and Sonya Romanelli, Amy and Michelle Talbert, Tammy and Glen Harding and Dan and Trina Ritchie; delightful great- grandchildren Connor Romanelli, Samantha and Nicole Harding and Miles Ritchie and dear friend of Brian and the Ritchie family, Dianne Hodge. He will be truly missed by siblings, Walter and Denise Ritchie (Winnipeg), Margaret Sacks (Fallbrook), Alex and Del Ritchie (Winnipeg). A celebration of Tom's life will be at 2 p.m. on April 21st at Greenway Retirement Home in Brampton, where the staff have provided excellent care and support to Tom and Betty. McKENZIE, Edward William - On August 7, 2018, Ed passed away peacefully at Deer Lodge Centre, which had been his home for the last seven years. Many thanks to the "team" that cared for dad. The patience, care and kindness they demonstrated are greatly appreciated. Ed is survived by his children, Marna (Doug) Overton of Peoria, AZ, Joan Megan of Minnedosa, and Jim (Paule) of St. Pierre Jolys, daughter-in-law Anne-Marie (Chuck), seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and his sister Gladys. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 67 years, Dorothy (Grinke), son Chuck of Maryville, Tennessee, son-in-law Jim Corley, grandson Joshua, brother James and many family members and friends. Ed was born in 1925 in Winnipeg and attended Hugh John McDonald and Daniel McIntyre High School. After graduation he worked for Swift Canadian Co., joined the navy and returned to Swifts after his service. He worked in the livestock section for the next 47 years with a 22 year stint in Edmonton, Alberta. During his career he made many friends and kept in touch long after retiring. Ed enjoyed sports, namely curling, golf and basketball. In 1964 he was president of the Civic Cal Curling Club. He also had a strong connection to the St. Andrews Basketball Club in Winnipeg and the Belvedere Golf and Country Club in Edmonton. In keeping with Dad's wishes, cremation has taken place and the family will gather at a later date for a graveside ceremony. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to a charity of your choice. SLY, William Morley, Bos'n, RCN / C.A.F. (22 Dec 1948 - 07 Dec 2014) - of Nanticoke passed away after a lengthy illness at West Haldimand General Hospital on Sunday December 7, 2014 in his 66th year. Loving husband of Eleanor, dear father of Bill of Port Dover, AJ (Steven) of Toronto and Maryann Sly-Kensley (Adrian) of Guelph. Proud grandfather of Billie, Isaac, Russell, Samantha and Sydney. Will be fondly remembered by brother-in-law Bill and sister-in-law Esther. Predeceased by his parents Albert and Clela, siblings Raymond, Albert, Jean, Shirley and Joyce and brother-in-law Clayton. Bill served in the Royal Canadian Navy, worked as a millwright and went back to school and at age 42 and graduated from McMaster University with a degree in Labour Studies. He was interested in world religion and philosophy but his true passion was the water as he so much enjoyed his house on the lake. Friends are invited to meet with family to share memories of Bill on Saturday December 13, 2014 from 11am to 1pm at Thompson Waters Funeral Home, 102 First Ave Port Dover. A memorial service to celebrate Bill's life will follow the visitation at the funeral home Chapel at 1pm. Bill Lee officiant. Donations to West Haldimand General Hospital or Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice would be appreciated.

BURNS, Donald Tyrrell (Terry) - 77 of St. George's Channel, Cape Breton, died August 10, 2018, at home. Terry was born in Bridgewater the son of the late Donald Wolsley and Barbara Jean ( Whynacht) Burns. He is survived by his wife and partner of 52 years, Rosemary Elizabeth (Stevens); daughter, Christine Elizabeth Burns, Truro; granddaughter, Alexandria Elizabeth Field, Lantz; sister, Marilyn Elizabeth Burns (Ron Murphy), Dartmouth; nieces, Wendy Williston (Gary Patterson), Dartmouth; Belinda "Linda" Rouillard (Sylvain Rouillard), Halifax and numerous great nieces and nephews. Terry was an accomplished golfer, a seasoned sailor and enjoyed the hunting camp with the camp crew. He served for three years in The Royal Canadian Navy before becoming a C.P.G.A. Golf Professional. At Terry's request no visitation or funeral. "Remember me as you last saw me", helping a neighbour, swinging a golf club, boiling a big pot of lobsters or crabs, grilling up steaks at a fund raiser, plowing snow, manning the power saw, or face into the wind at the helm of a yacht. If so desired, donations may be made in Terry's memory to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall - Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro.

MacDONALD, John Dan, PO - PO MacDonald served in the Engineroom of HMCS Thunder during WW2. He married Julia Arleen Arthrell who was in the CWAC'S in Halifax and had two boys, John William and Richard Murray. They lived in Stellarton NS until 1947 when they moved to Paris, Ontario, where he worked at Penman's textile mills until becoming an ambulance driver; a job he held until he retired. John was predeceased by his wife in 1993. She died on their anniversary, New Year's Eve of that year. John died in July 1998 from a heart attack. Both John and Julia are buried in the veterans part of the Paris cemetery.

GRANDIN, William (Bill) - Veteran WW2.  Bill passed away before 2010, around the same time as his wife and son.  He had one surviving daughter.

Bill was a friend of Herbert Higgs - they both served in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War 2.

LEWIS, Harold (Hal), RCN - 69, passed away at home, January 24, 1999, after a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, the former Patricia Hardiman; sons, David (Marlaine), McGraths Cove; Rick (Diane), Glen Margaret; Tim (Kim), Ottawa; Shawn (Cavin), Halifax; daughters, Linda (Paul O'Brien), Vancouver; Lorri (Fred) Werner, Dartmouth. He was "Grampy" to 11 grandchildren whom he loved dearly. Hal was a member of the Royal Canadian Navy from 1947-50. He later worked for the National Harbour's Board in Halifax for 14 years. Throughout these years, Hal also worked for the sports he loved, as an umpire and chief with the Nova Scotia Softball Association; as a referee, chief and administrator with the Nova Scotia Amateur Hockey Association in Halifax, and for 22 years as an essential figure on the Canadian Hockey Association in Ottawa. Hal was an avid golfer and remained active until shortly before his death. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and colleagues and the entire sport he was so committed to. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, January 27, at 1 p.m. in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth, Msgr. Currie officiating. Reception to follow in the funeral home. GROSETH, Robert (Bobby) Byron, C2ET, 14723-E, RCN / C.A.F. (served 04 Jan 1951 - 31 Jan 1976) - passed away peacefully surrounded by his beloved family after a brief but courageous battle with cancer on August 13, 2004 at Royal Inland Hospital, Kamloops, B.C. Predeceased by sister Betty Lou, father Lawrence, mother Lulu and brother Lawrence. Robert leaves behind his devoted wife of fifty years Janet, children Roxanne (Bill) Mooney, Steven (Carolynn), Valarie (Jan) Versendaal, Lance (Serap), Annette (Leonard); grandchildren Allison, Paul, Jaclynn, Rachael, Conyr, Nicholas, Nolan, Melissa, Paige, Kira, Emily, Megan; sister Gayla, and loyal K9 companion Summer. Born July 15, 1932 in Melville, Sask., Robert spent his early life on the family farm in Dubac, Sask. After joining the Royal Canadian Navy at 17, he gave 25 years of service. He retired from the Navy in 1975 with the rank of Chief Petty Officer. At the end of his service Robert took his family north to Mackenzie, B.C. working in the forestry industry as an electrician.For 30 years he was a valuable, dynamic individual in the community. It was in the north that Robert was able to pursue his passion for the outdoors. He was an accomplished hunter, fisherman, marksman, trapper and prospector. Sorely missed by all will be his engaging and lively personality, his love of conversation, good food and devilish wit. An open reception will be held on August 21, 3:00 p.m. at Pro Pats Legion #411 Gorge Road East. In lieu of flowers please direct a donation to B.C. GUENTHER, Gerald Wayne (Jiggs), P1ER, 39054-E, RCN / C.A.F. (served 23 Oct 1957 - 30 Aug 1986) (23 Nov 1937 - 18 Feb 2005) - Born in Ponoka, Alta., faithfully walked friend Maggie to school each day; hence the nickname ""Jiggs"". Served in the Canadian Forces (Navy) almost 30 years, followed by several years of school bus driving at 70 Mile/100 Mile House. Jiggs' warmth, humour and friendship will be greatly missed by wife Lorraine Joni, son Robert, stepsons Glen (Myrna) and Greg, brothers Ronald and Melvin (Joan), nieces, nephews, grandchildren, many cousins, wonderful friends and his very special ""school bus kids and teachers"". A celebration of Jiggs' life will be held at 70 Mile Community Hall, followed by a reception, on April 9, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. Donations to the BC Cancer Society or the 100 Mile Hospice/Palliative Care Society are greatly appreciated. The family extends its deepest appreciation to the South Cariboo Health Centre, physicians, nurses, support staff and hospice volunteers for their dedicated, compassionate care provided to us during Jiggs' lengthy illness. He was predeceased by his wife, Vera and will be loving remembered by his 3 children, Jeri, Andrew and Peter, his friend Tena and his 3 grandchildren. Dad will be sorely missed by all those whose lives he touched and he will be remembered for his big heart. No service by request. TAGGART, Donald Ray (Don), CPO1, RCN / C.A.F. - 78, of Coldbrook, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 17, 2018 at home. Born in Ottawa, Ontario, he was a son of the late Cecil and Mary Janet Rose "Mae" (Ray) Taggart. Don was a 25-year veteran of the Royal Canadian Navy, retiring as Chief Petty Officer, 1st Class, in 1981. Don continued to work in the supply field until he retired in 1995 at which time he moved to Coldbrook. He was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Kings Branch No. 6, Kentville. Within the legion, Don held many positions, retiring as Service Officer. In his younger years, Don was an avid golf player. Don enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and he especially enjoyed his time with his great grand children. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Don is survived by his wife of 58 years, Shirley (Burgoyne); three daughters, Linda Gillespie, Coldbrook; Janet Taggart (Darlene Crittenden), Beaver Bank; Angela (Jim) Archibald, Beaver Bank; six grandchildren, Donnie Gillespie, Kelly Gillespie, Corrie (Meghan) Demedeiros, Stephanie (Lionel) Ouedraogo, Michael Archibald (Laurel Duhme) and Mathew Archibald; two great-grandchildren, Jaydon MacDonald and Dawson Burhoe; nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Don was predeceased by son in law Donald Gillespie Sr., two sisters, Lois and Joan; two brothers, Bill and Terry. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or a charity of ones choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
