MacDONALD, Leo Ivan,
CD, Cdr, RCN / C.A.F. - Of Braeshore, Pictou Co. Born March 7,
1937, passed away Sunday evening August 26, 2018. Leo attended
Pictou Academy and joined the RCN in 1954 at the age of 17 in the
first class of the Venture Plan. Over the years, he served in a
number of ships including Ontario, Restigouche, Inch Arran, Sioux,
Algonquin, Loon, Cormorant, Gatineau, Nipigon, Fraser, Porte St.
Jean and Port St. Louis. Leo specialized as an Operations Officer
and had his first command (HMCS Loon) in 1965 which involved
training naval cadets for the Royal Military College. The Loon was
given carte blanche with respect to how training was to be
conducted, so one of the first ports of call was Pictou for the
Lobster Carnival. The weather was so great that year, the then
Lieutenant MacDonald decided to operate out of Pictou as his home
port. In 1968, Leo was selected by the Navy to attend Dalhousie
University from where he received his BA with Distinction in 1970 by
which time he was a Lieutenant Commander. In 1972, Leo attended the
Canadian Forces Command and Staff College. While visiting the United
Nations in New York, he was selected to debate peacekeeping against
the USAF Academy in the presence of Canadian and US ambassadors to
the UN (Canada won). Leo was appointed as Executive Assistant to the
Commander of Maritime Command, the largest Command in the Canadian
Armed Forces. Promoted to Commander in 1973, Leo assumed command of
HMCS Fraser. During the two and a half years in command, Fraser met
every commitment assigned, including a period in the Standing Naval
Force Atlantic. Fraser had a great crew with a can-do attitude,
winning both fleet Cock of the Walk and SNFL Fleet Sports Olympiad.
Fraser was the first Canadian warship to arrest foreign vessels for
illegal fishing (Feb 96). For a number of years Leo was able to
arrange for a Canadian destroyer to visit Pictou for the annual
Lobster Carnival and it was at a reception in one of these ships
(HMCS Margaree) that he met Barbara Sharp, who was to become his
wife and soulmate. Leo retired from the Navy in 1977 to return to
Dalhousie from where he received his LLB in 1980 and was admitted to
the Bar the same year. Leo remained in the Naval Reserve and while
at law school, during the summers, he commanded HMCS Porte St. Jean
and HMCS Porte St. Louis, which of course he took to Pictou for the
Lobster Carnival. He qualified as Convoy Commodore with the US Navy.
Leo returned to Toronto as Syndicate Director for senior Naval
Reserve Officers from across Canada. Leo practiced law in Dartmouth
and Halifax before returning home to Pictou in 1984 where he
practiced with the firm MacLean and MacDonald until he retired in
2004. From then until his death he remained Counsel to the firm.
Over the years, he remained active in community involvement having
been Past President of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary for the
Maritime Region (for which he was featured in MacLean's magazine),
Past Vice President of the Nova Scotia Naval Officers Association,
Past President of the Pictou West Cancer Society, and past member of
Pictou Recreation Committee. Over the years Barb and Leo always had
a cottage and great fun ensued. Firing the cannon, water skiing,
bonfires and games, wonderful travels and of course our Wire Hair
Fox Terriers, made for a good life. Leo was predeceased by his
parents, Roy and Ethel MacDonald; sister, Shirley Rowley, and his
biological mother, Gertie Porteous. Surviving are his wife, Barbara;
daughter, Sandy (Michael Gaspar), Dartmouth; grandson, Derek,
Toronto; brother, Ron (Kathy), North Bay; sister, Colleen (Michael)
Mulville, Toronto; special nephews and nieces. Love and thanks to
the medical community who cared for Leo and to our friends for being
so supportive, and also a special thank you to Leo's brother and
sister-in-law, Michael and Wendy Pulchny. At his request there will
be no visitation or service. Donations in his memory may be made to
a charity of your choice. Saturday, September 1st, a gathering to
remember Leo will be held in Harbour House Restaurant, Pictou, from
2-4 p.m. It was Leo's wish to treat friends to a glass!

THOMSON, Christopher
James, Nav Comm, C.A.F. (Navy) - It is with great heartfelt
sadness we announce the sudden, but peaceful passing of our dear
Father, Son, Brother and Nephew: Christopher James Thomson in
Victoria, BC on August 28, 2007 at the age of 47. Chris was
predeceased by his loving mother Dorothy Thomson; his grandparents,
Leon and Auguste Wagner, two uncles, Herb and Otto Wagner, all from
Winnipeg, Manitoba. Also predeceased by Sara and William Hutchison
Thomson; his grandparents from Edinburgh, Scotland. Left to cherish
his memory are his three children, Justin Thomson of Edmonton,
Alberta. Matthew and Elisha Thomson both of Castlegar BC. Chris also
will be deeply and sadly missed by his father, William Thomson;
brother William Keith, sisters, Kathleen (Ken) Debra (Danny) and
Shelley. Chris will also be cherished by his nieces and nephew Kyle
(Susie) and Kari Krochenski (Geoff) and Sierra Wray, extended
family, Buddy and Pat Wagner, Nettie Wagner, and cousins Ruth (Paul)
and Leon (Rae). All of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Marlene and Eldon
Champion and cousins from Halifax, NS. Also he will be remembered by
extended family in Scotland, Walter and Sandra Fordyce (whom he had
the pleasure of their resent visit to Winnipeg) James and Betty
Thomson, and his cousin Mike (Anna) Thomson. Our brother Chris was
born on Christmas Day 1959, and raised in Winnipeg. He attended
Sargent Park ,and R.B Russell High School. Remembering back, he
always thought he got dealt a crappy hand seeing how we all had to
share our Christmas' with his Birthday. But our Mom always made sure
Chris had extra presents under the tree. Being the middle child of
five, Chris was the feisty one. If it wasn't Chris practicing his
karate moves on his youngest sister...he was trying to hide from Mom
and Dad after throwing a baseball through the neighbor's window. Or
hiding a kitty he found on the street in his room for days before
anyone found out...Chris was always in one form or another making it
known he was the middle child . We have so many wonderful childhood
memories that we all will cherish. Entering his teen years he became
a member of Cadets at Minto Armories . He had the opportunity to
spend two summers in Vernon, BC as a cadet. That is what decided his
career path. At the age of 18, Chris enlisted in the Canadian
Military Navy . After finishing his basic training in Cornwall, NS
he was then posted in Victoria, BC. Chris started his Military
career specializing in Naval Communication. He married Carol in
Winnipeg in 1987, returning to Victoria where they raised their
three children. In later years, although Chris and his kids lived
apart, he always had them in his heart. He was proud of each and
every one of them. As a member of the Canadian Navy he has traveled
to places such as Korea, Hawaii, Russia, Panama Canal, Haiti and
Afghanistan. He also has attended numerous training courses on the
East Coast. Our brother made Victoria his home for the last 29
years, though he always came home for visits. He very recently
returned home where he had the pleasure of seeing all his family;
including our Aunt and Uncle from Scotland. We are very so thankful
for that time we had with him. Being out at Sea was his love. The
Navy was his life. Dearest Chris, Although your time was shortened
with us...you are able to rest now and be at peace. As you enter the
wonderful world of heaven to be with our Mom, remember, we all love
you and will miss you, and as Dad always said to you, Good Bye Pal,
God Bless Our family would like to give special Thanks to : Victoria
General Hospital in Victoria, BC. Lt. Brenda Cyr and Padre Laura
Paddich from Victoria. Thank You to Cpt. Spencer, Padre Lisa
Pacarynuk and Padre Lance Gagdziak, CFB Winnipeg, for all their
guidance, care and concern to our family during this trying time.
Funeral Service 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 5, 2007 at Bardal
Funeral Home, 843 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba. A committal
at sea of Christopher's cremated remains will take place at a later

POWELL, James Charles (Ray), RCN -
Age 86, on July 3, 2018. Beloved son of Edgar Earnest Powell, Royal
Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officer and also a health inspector;
and Hazel Fern Alcorn Powell, an elementary school teacher; brother
of Grace Powell; husband of Valerie Powell. Born on November 18,
1931, in Edmonton, Alberta, Jay was a veteran of the Royal Canadian
Navy (RCN). From a difficult path as a dyslexic child through
elementary and secondary education, Jay eventually earned a Ph.D.
with a focus on educational assessment and statistics at the
University of Alberta (as well as other degrees and a diploma). For
many years, he taught as a professor at the University of Windsor in
Windsor, Ontario. Jay passed peacefully on July 3, 2018. Jay's life
represents more than a half-century of teaching and research in
which he sought to describe and demonstrate ways to improve
education. According to Jay, today's education is hampered by an
inadequate feedback system that ignores the nature of students'
mistakes when tests are scored "right/wrong." He details a
different way to teach and carry out assessment that can turn
"followers into leaders." Jay described how students'
answer selections reveal modes of thinking. He felt teachers need
this information about student thought to help learners think more
effectively. Jay emphasized that educators should be getting
students to "think their way into knowledge" so that their
insightful thinking creates their understanding, with teachers
provoking learning and not just delivering information to remember.
In a family move for a few years to Bermuda, where both Jay and his
sister Grace had to maintain educational progress in the
highly-rated Alberta educational system through distance learning,
Jay felt that he had to "learn how to learn." Jay often
said that a teacher should be not be a "sage on the stage, but
a guide by the side." The difference between memorizing and
understanding was a key concept in Jay's thinking and was reflected
in his research. Jay sought educational assessment strategies that
could help identify whether students were completing assessments of
their learning by relying too heavily on memorization, rather than
on understanding. He emphasized that "mathematics is a
language," and encouraged teaching accordingly. His approach to
statistics favored non-linear (multinomial) analysis after extensive
collaboration with statistician Norm Shklov. Jay frequently asserted
that the "normal curve" of commonly used linear statistics
was invalid for educational assessment. Jay continued to do research
well into his 80s, transcending his early learning difficulties. Jay
lost his beloved first wife, Francis, of many years, to congestive
heart failure, and then his beloved second wife, Mary, to cancer. In
2007, Jay married an educator, Valerie. He returned to his
statistical research topics and advanced to the international level
of educational assessment research, presenting invited lectures at
Cambridge University in the UK, and in Germany, Brazil and Romania,
as well as at various conferences in North America, and developing a
number of publications. Friends are invited to attend a memorial
service at the Unitarian-Universalist Church of the South Hills (UUCSH
or Sunnyhill) at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 8, 2018, 1240
Washington Rd., Mt. Lebanon, PA 15228. Memorial contributions may be

WESTGATE, Murray, Lt, RCNVR - WW 2 Veteran. Born
on April 16, 1918 in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. He was an actor, known
for Happy Birthday to Me (1981), Blue City Slammers (1988) and Encounter
(1952). He was married to Alice Hill. He died on August 27, 2018 in Toronto,
Ontario, Canada.
‘They treated him like he was a hockey star’:
Actor and Hockey Night in Canada fixture Murray Westgate dies at age
100
By Paul Hunter. Feature Writer Mon., Aug. 27, 2018
He was Canada’s
original television pitchman; a fixture on Hockey Night in Canada for almost
two decades where his “Happy Motoring” catch phrase made him as famous
as the players on the ice.
Murray Westgate
— an actor known for his friendly smile and reassuring baritone — died
at Sunnybrook Veterans Centre on Monday. He celebrated his 100th birthday
there in April.
From the
black-and-white infancy of Canadian television in 1952, Westgate was a
Saturday night presence in his shiny brimmed hat and black bow tie, talking
about Esso products between periods. With his folksy charm, the Regina
native was so trustworthy as a TV auto mechanic, viewers were convinced he
was the real deal. They would stop him on the street to seek advice on
maintaining their vehicles.
Westgate’s
daughter, Linda Ayoung-Chee, said it was quite humorous because “pumping
gas was the best you could get from him. Cars were not his forte.”
Although he was a
successful, serious actor, Westgate played the Esso station attendant until
1968. He came out of retirement at 72 to reprise the role for commercial
spots that ran during the 1991 Stanley Cup playoffs. In the early days he
was even part of the hockey conversation, on set introducing the Hot Stove
panel, chiming in on occasion.
“I couldn’t
believe it,” he said at the time of his 100th birthday, noting his fond
memories of listening to the Maple Leafs on the radio while living on the
Prairies.
“It was amazing
to then grow up and be on the Hot Stove. They were great guys. I really
enjoyed it.”
Hockey historian
and broadcaster Brian McFarlane did appearances with Westgate at the
Canadian National Exhibition and remembers the actor as a “genuine
down-to-earth guy” at ease meeting the public.
“They treated
him like he was a hockey star,” he said.
McFarlane is
convinced Westgate could have been a much bigger luminary in the acting
world if he’d moved to the United States.
“He could have
easily gone to Hollywood and been a success. He was a very good actor,”
McFarlane says. “He chose to live in Canada. I think he was happy with the
CBC and the hockey connection.”
Westgate and his
wife — actress Alice Hill, who died in 1983 — kept Toronto as their base
and his acting roles included everything from the prime minister of Canada
to the U.S. president to Sir Frederick Banting, one of the discoverers of
insulin.
He won an ACTRA
award as best supporting actor for playing a farmer in the CBC production
Tyler in 1979. Then, in 1988, he was nominated for a Genie as best
supporting actor in Blue City Slammers. Westgate, also a talented graphic
artist, was inducted into the Canadian Association of Broadcasters Hall of
Fame in 2002.
A serviceman in
more ways than one, Westgate was a telegraphist in the Canadian navy during
the Second World War despite battling seasickness.
“It would take
about five days to cross the Atlantic. I was seasick as hell at the
beginning,” he once explained. “You get over it and you can do your
work, but you’re always feeling woozy.”
Modest and
self-effacing, Westgate once said people in the navy understood his
situation. But it was tough when he once took a passenger ship from England
to Northern Ireland.
“I was sick as a
dog, wearing a uniform sitting with ordinary citizens in a ship — that
embarrassed me.”
He spent six years
in the navy, three on watch for submarines while escorting supply ships to
the front. Twice after he left a ship, it was torpedoed and sunk on its next
trip.
Ayoung-Chee said
it reached the point where the other sailors didn’t want her father to
leave.
“He became the
lucky charm,” she said.
In retirement,
Westgate spent as much time as he could at his Georgian Bay cottage, most of
which he built himself. There he indulged what became his great passion in
life — sailing.

HALIKOWSKI, Ellen A., WRCNS
(nee LANG) (28 Aug 1923 - 29 Aug 2018) - After a life well lived it is
with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Ellen Adeline (Lang) Halikowski.
Ellen was predeceased by her parents Gordon and Ellen (Nilsson) Lang, her
beloved husband Hal (Gerald), her siblings Art (Kay), Lyall, Bud (George)
(Polly) and Ida (Walter) Gerber, and her son-in-law John. She is survived by
her children Natashia (Ken Drabinsky), Diana Dewar, Jim (Leslie) Halston,
her much loved grandchildren Cole, Ellen and Mitchell and her sister-in-law
Beryl. Ellen was born in Sioux Lookout, ON and grew up in Winnipeg, MB
during the dirty 30s graduating from Kelvin High School and the Success
School of Business. During WWII she joined the WRCNS as a writer and
rejoined during the Korean conflict. She was one of the first women to be
granted a permanent commission in the WRCNS serving in HMCS Chippewa, NHQ
Ottawa, HMCNAS Shearwater and HMCS Naden. After the hard child rearing years
of a navy wife were completed she volunteered with the Canadian Red Cross,
the CNIB and finally with the VGH Auxilliary where she served as the
president. Mum was a hardy soul always ready to raise a glass at the end of
a busy day and a fine example of a daughter from Canada's greatest
generation. (Victoria Times Colonist 07 Sep 2018)

PEARSON, Roderick Frank,
Slt, RCNVR (22 Sep 1924 - 03 Sep 2018) - Frank passed away in Calgary,
Alberta on September 3, 2018 at the age of 93 years after a long but patient
battle with Parkinson’s and other complications. He was born on September
22, 1924 and grew up on a farm near Hanley, Saskatchewan. Frank graduated
with an Engineering Physics Degree from the University of Saskatchewan at
the age of 19 in 1944 and immediately joined the Navy as a Lieutenant
teaching at HMC Signal School, St. Hyacinthe, Quebec. After leaving the
Navy, he married the love of his life Elsie Evelyn Childs in Toronto on
October 6, 1945. He did power line construction work for his uncle Robert
before starting his career in 1947 with Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting in
Flin Flon, Manitoba. He worked in Flin Flon until 1974 when he transferred
to the Toronto head office before retiring in 1982. Frank and Elsie moved to
Kelowna in 1992 and after Elsie passed away in 2008, he lived in Calgary’s
Scenic Acres Retirement Centre since 2010 where the staff was so kind and
attentive to him. He is survived by his sister Jessie Garland Porter in
Burnaby, BC; his three children’s families: Jim and Donna (De Fraine)
Pearson, their son Ryan, daughter MaryEllen (Andrew) Machuk, their son
Mitchell, daughter Melissa Pearson (Jon Ng), their daughter Violet and
daughter Paula (Joe) Watkins, their sons Philip and Pearson; Nona (Doug)
Flemming, with their daughters Carly and Julie; and Murray Pearson. He was
pre-deceased by his parents, Sidney James and Christina Mae Pearson; Elsie
in 2008; and his sister Isabel Garfield Green in 2010. Frank and Elsie met
at a university dance after she snuck in without paying (“to check out the
new crop”) and he lied about his age. She found out when he had mumps in
the hospital where she worked and she saw his chart. Their passion with
square dancing started in the early years in Flin Flon and continued for
over fifty years. He enjoyed calling square dances and they were always
teaching newcomer classes. Frank was an officer in the Royal Canadian Sea
Cadet Corps “Husky” in Flin Flon for a number of years including a
period as Commanding Officer. He was a life-long Saskatchewan Roughriders
fan even though he lived in four other provinces. Until recently in Calgary
he participated in a number of activities arranged through the Parkinson
Association of Alberta including his favourites Dancing Parkinsons YYC at
Decidedly Jazz Danceworks with Vicki Willis and Anne Flynn and a singing
class with Brian Farrell of Revv52. His engineering analytical side was also
positively challenged by participation with others in a U of C Parkinson’s
gait thesis project by Alexandra Cihal for Dr. Bin Hu. Data was collected on
an iPod strapped to his knee to provide music feedback only when his steps
were more than a minimum length – with his always strong walking, he
passed with flying colours! Thanks also to Dr. Myhre who believes in
laughter as good medicine. While in Calgary, he especially enjoyed seeing
his grandchildren and his eyes would light up for his very recently born
great-grandchildren. Frank was a gentle soul who lived his life with great
dignity and appreciated all help from other people. He will be missed.
Relatives and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life to be held at
Foster’s Garden Chapel, 3220 – 4 Street NW, Calgary, Alberta (across
from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Thursday, October 4, 2018 at 2:00 p.m.
Friends are invited to meet at 1:45 p.m. on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at
the main entrance to Lakeview Memorial Gardens Cemetery (2850 Dry Valley
Road, Kelowna, BC) before an interment ceremony at 2:00 p.m. If friends so
desire, memorial donations may be made in Frank’s name, directly to
Parkinson Association of Alberta.
