The family of Richard Ives is sad to share the news that he passed
away on March 2, 2019 at age 85. Though sad, we know that Richard
had a wonderful and full life. This is something we will cherish and
celebrate. Richard and his nine siblings grew up in Cudworth, Sask.,
a small community where everyone knew each other and were friends.
He joined the Navy at age 19 and served on a number of naval ships.
He was proud of his service and received the Canadian Peacekeeping
Service Medal and the Korean Ambassador for Peace Medal. After 30
years in the Navy, Richard started his second career as a physics
technician at Saint Mary's University. When he retired in 1995 he
volunteered with the Royal Canadian Legion and with Kiwanis (Past
President of the Kiwanis Club of Woodlawn). He was the person we all
called upon when something needed to be built or fixed. Richard
enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden, watching old Western
movies, playing bridge, walking his dog Newton and travelling. It
was by walking Newton that Richard met his second wife, Mona Sibley
whom he was married to for 26 happy years. Mona and his family will
dearly miss him: his children, Richard (Heather), Nancy, Doug (Becki),
and son-in-law, Thom Hori; his grandchildren, Andrew, Thomas,
Dashiell and Sam; his siblings, Bill, Walter, Clinton, Ernie,
Beatrice, Kathleen and their families; and his granddogs. He was
predeceased by his daughter, Sally Hori; his son-in-law, Brian
Miller; and siblings, Ronald, Leslie and Alice. The family would
like to thank Richard's caregivers at Parkland Estates (Lewis Hall)
for looking after him the last two and a half years and the staff at
Dartmouth General Hospital (4th floor East Wing) for the
compassionate care given to him (and to us) during his week in the
hospital. In accordance with Richard's wishes he has been cremated
and his ashes will be buried at sea. A memorial service to celebrate
his life will be held March 9th at 2:30 p.m. in Atlantic Funeral
Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth, followed by a reception. Donations in
his memory may be made to Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation.
(Halifax Chronicle-Herald 06 Mar 2019)

GREENWOOD, Armand,
Clearance Diver, RCN / C.A.F. - It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Armand
Charles Greenwood, due to a heart attack, on December 19, 2017 in
Barriere, BC. Armand was 69 years old. Armand was born in Trail, BC
on February 25, 1948, the third of three children. He grew up in the
Trail/Castlegar area where he attended school. Right from the start,
Armand was very athletic and into sports where he had set several BC
high school track and field records and was an avid baseball
pitcher. In March of 1966 Armand joined the Royal Canadian Navy
where he served for 14 years. He started as a Ship's Weapon Service
Technician and quickly made his way to a Ship's Diver. While being
stationed at the Navy Diving Unit in Esquimalt BC, he moved on to
become a Deep-Sea Diver and Explosives Demolition Technician. The
Navy took Armand all over the Pacific to places like Japan,
Australia, Hawaii, Vietnam, North America's West Coast and the East
Coast of Canada. In 1967 Armand traveled across Canada with the
Canadian Armed Forces Tattoo where displays of Military history were
performed. He was a member of the Canon Brigade in the Navy Tattoo.
While Armand was in the Navy he was also an accomplished Golden
Gloves Boxer. Armand met Judy in 1970 in Victoria, BC. The two were
later wed on August 28th, 1971. The newlyweds resided at the Navel
housing at Rocky Point just outside of Victoria, BC where they had
two daughters. Armand continued in the Navy until he requested
release in 1980.
The family moved to Barriere, BC later that
year where they purchased 60 acres and built their dream log home.
Armand started a new career path of truck driving. He started
working for Gilbert Smith Forest Products as a logging truck driver
where he was very proud of his old Hayes truck. He was also a
highway driver for KenWes Trucking around that time. Dad graduated
up to a new Peterbilt when he started driving logging truck for
Keith Russell. We don't think there was ever a truck that was
polished so much. Armand continued his love of baseball where he
volunteered as coach in Barriere. During the spring break of April
1989, Armand had another career change. He got the opportunity to
apply for a job at Ledcor at the Samatosum mine just outside of
Barriere. He started with Ledcor as a heavy-duty mechanic and welder
in the mining sector. With Armand's strong work ethic and his quiet
assertive character, he quickly advanced to Master Mechanic and on
to be a Mechanical and Equipment Supervisor. With this position
Armand did a lot of travelling, working in Northern BC and Alberta,
Yellow Knife and 7 years in various mines in Nevada, Idaho,
California and Arizona. Armand thoroughly enjoyed his job with the
Ledcor company where he initially retired in 2011. He then went to
work part time for Gram in Barriere, to keep busy as he wasn't good
at sitting idle. Ledcor contacted him in 2012 to pull him out of
retirement where he worked for an additional two years. In 2014,
Armand retired to the acreage in Barriere with Judy where he worked
part-time as a mechanic and snow plow driver for Murray Purcha &
Sons. Armand loved to work and keep busy and was very grateful for
this part-time job. Alongside Judy, they ran Sienna Stables at their
acreage keeping busy boarding horses, building the barn, shelters
and general upkeep. Armand also loved to help out around his
daughter and son-in-law's farm in Alberta driving combine, baling
hay, fixing equipment and helping with the cattle. Armand's favorite
past times were being at the lake with his family boating and water
skiing, playing with his dogs, golfing, fishing, spending time with
his grandchildren and watching NASCAR racing. He will be greatly
missed by his wife, family and all who knew him. Armand leaves
behind his loving wife of 46 years Judy (nee Murray), daughters;
Kathlyn (David) Peltzer, Daphne Sheehan, grandchildren; Bryanne and
Lyndsey Peltzer, Reyse Hudson, Lacey and Tripper Sheehan, mother Eva
Long, sister Jackie (Jim) Whaley, brother Alfred (Roberta) Greenwood
and numerous nieces and nephews. Armand was predeceased by his
father Leonard. In memory of Armand, if friends desire memorial
tributes can be made to the Yellowhead Pioneer Residence, Box 212
Barriere BC, V0E-1E0, or the BC SPCA (Kamloops), 1211 8th St,
Kamloops BC, V2B 2Y3 A celebration of life will be held in the
Spring of 2018.

HENN, Richard
Arthur, RCN - It is with much sadness that we announce the
passing of Richard Arthur Henn on March 5th, 2019. Rick in his 75th
year, after a valiant battle, passed at Surrey Memorial Hospital
with his son and daughter by his side. Rick is predeceased by his
parents Dave and Alice Henn, his brother Arone (Katherine) all of
whom opened their arms to walk with him through his next journey.
Rick is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Shirley (nee
Cormier), his children Dion (Mary) and Charline (Darren Morris), and
the love of his life, his grandson Dylan (Buckwheat). His brother
Dave (Elanor) and many loving nieces, nephews and extended family.
Rick was proudest of his family but also of his service to his
country in the Navy, he served on the Cayuga, and his boxing years.
Rick was a long-time resident of Surrey, British Columbia and grew
up in Deep Cove in North Vancouver. He never strayed far from sight
of the mountains and spent his happiest times with friends at the
Vancouver Racetrack, where he was known as the Carrot Man, and with
family and friends at the Cabin at Loon Lake, BC. In true Rick
fashion we will be holding a celebration of life in early June to
allow for family and friends to come together in the warmth of
sunshine and in the spirit of fun. We will announce details as we
finalize everything in the late spring. After Rick’s celebration
of life, he will be laid to rest with his Mom, Dad, Bob Gaucher, and
Jack Phillips in God’s Country, also known as the Cabin at Loon
Lake. We will forever hear, “Good morning, Captain, good morning
to you” echoing across the lake. In lieu of flowers or sympathies,
please donate to a charity of your choice, Rick was a very generous
man and would have wanted it that way. Dad, you were a great husband
and father, an amazing Pop, loved your family with all you had, a
true friend to many, and had never met stranger that he wouldn't
take the time for or talk with. The world just isn’t as happy as
it was with you in it…We love you!

BLACKADAR, Seymour
Atkins (Blackie), DEMS Gunner - passed away peacefully,
surrounded by family, on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at the age of 93
and is safely at home with his Lord and Saviour. He is survived by
his loving wife Ruth; sons, Jim (Robyn), Gerold and David (Lisa);
along with granddaughters, Jenicka (Allan), Kayla, Emmalee and
Sarah; in addition to great-grandsons, Trey and Kayn. A native of
Weymouth, Nova Scotia, Seymour proudly served in the Royal Canadian
Navy and Merchant Navy (DEMS) during the Second World War. After the
war, he returned to Weymouth briefly and afterwards he enlisted in
the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps. He served in Korea and then
was transferred to Germany attached to NATO when he met the love of
his life, Ruth. They spent many happy years together in Germany and
when posted to Canada, he wrapped up his military career and then
was employed in the Public Service sector. Seymour greatly enjoyed
visiting family and friends in Nova Scotia (especially his nephew
George and niece Bev - they always kept him updated about news in
the Maritimes) and in North Carolina. Family get-togethers,
storytelling, RCASC reunions and fishing all played a part of
Seymour's life. Especially making him happy was his role as an usher
at church; he had a ready, welcome handshake and a greeting for both
old and new friends. Billy Graham, the great evangelist who died a
year ago once said, "Someday you will read or hear that Billy
Graham is dead. Don't believe a word of it! I shall be more alive
than I am now. I will just have changed my address. I will have gone
into the presence of God." The family would like to send their
sincere thanks to Tenise Nolet (Prime) for the kindness and care she
has shown, as well as Dr. Russell Albak and Dr. Don Allan (Nephrologist).
Seymour's funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 21, 2019
at 11:00 a.m. in Ness Avenue Baptist Church, 2700 Ness Avenue.
Following the service there will be a reception at the church, with

STANDING, Kenneth (03 Apr 1925 - 21
Mar 2019) The family of Dr. Kenneth Graham Standing is sad to
announce that he died Thursday, March 21, at the age of 93. Ken is
survived by his children, Mike and wife Brenda Janz, Tim, Liz and
husband Clarence Jackson, Jon and wife Andrea Jackson; as well as
grandchildren, Willem, Tannin, Rachel, Luke and Corin, and a large
extended family. Parents, Graham and Elsie Standing, his brothers,

University of Manitoba on an Isbister Scholarship, but after one
year of university felt the call to serve his country in the Second
World War. He joined the navy and was posted to run the freshwater
pumping station at an inland lake, for the navy base at Shelburne,
Nova Scotia. After the war, he was fortunate to be able to return to
U of M and complete his undergrad degree. He then went to Princeton
University and completed his A. M. and PhD in Nuclear Physics under
Dr. Rubby Sherr. Ken joined the faculty at U of M 1953; here he
designed, built and commissioned the Cyclotron Particle Accelerator,
serving as Director from 1959 to 1974. In the late 1970s, he
completely changed the focus of his research to Time-of-Flight Mass
Spectrometry and its applications to study biological
macromolecules, particularly proteins and peptides. Ken is widely
regarded as a pioneer in this area, which is an essential component
of the new field of proteomics. His collaborations with biologists
focused on the solution of a wide range of biological problems. A
notable example was the collaboration with the National Microbiology
Lab during the SARS outbreak in 2002 and 2003. Ken's group made
significant contributions to characterizing the virus by providing
sequence information for much of the protein structure before the
genome was sequenced. He received many awards and accolades during
his distinguished career, including the Canadian Society for Mass
Spectrometry Award for Distinguished Contributions to Mass
Spectrometry, the Canadian Association of Physicists Medal for
Outstanding Achievement in Industrial and Applied Physics, the
American Chemical Society Field and Franklin Award for outstanding
achievement in mass spectrometry, and the Encana Principal Award
from the Ernest C. Manning Foundation, known as 'Canada's Nobel
Prize'. Ken was elected as a Fellow of the American Physical Society
and of the Royal Society of Canada. He served as Member or Chair of
various US National Institutes of Health Special Study Sections. He
and his research team were awarded NSERC's Brockhouse Canada Prize
for Interdisciplinary Research in Science and Engineering. The
sponsors of the annual Enabling Technologies Symposium have also
established the Ken Standing Award, in his honour. In 2009, Ken was
awarded the highest honour the university can confer upon an
individual, the honorary degree of Doctor of Science (honoris causa)
by the University of Manitoba. Ken donated the personal prize money
from the Manning award to further fund his research. Despite his
accomplishments, he remained a modest man, sharing the limelight and
recognizing his colleagues for their contributions, including as
inventors on patents. Ken also mentored and welcomed many young
Canadian scientists to his lab, as well as those from all over the
world, including Russia, China, the US, Brazil and Sri Lanka. He was
very proud of all of them and their accomplishments. Ken loved
travel, and through his work he had the opportunity to spend a year
in Bristol, England, as a Nuffield Fellow, and two separate years in
France on sabbatical. His work also took him throughout Europe, the
United States, India, Sri Lanka, Australia, Uzbekistan and Russia.
Ken retired as a professor in 1995 but continued his research as
Emeritus Professor well into his 80s, and continued his routine of
walking to the university and going to his office/lab every day
until his early 90s. He loved downhill skiing, enjoying many family
ski trips, skiing well into his 70s. Our Dad was a proud eccentric,
and a loving, kind and patient Father and Grandfather. He especially
loved spending time with his family at the cottage he designed and
helped build on his beloved Lake of the Woods. Grandpa adored his
Grandchildren and loved to spend time with them, playing cards,
doing puzzles, eating good food, reading to them and attending their
school and sporting events. Our Dad had a curious mind, a wide range
of interests, and was always interested in people and politics. He
had an impish sense of humour until the end. He will be dearly
missed. The family would like to thank the staff at Tuxedo Villa for
their care and support for our Dad. A celebration of Ken's life will
be held at 7:00 p.m. on May 6, 2019 at the Pavilion Atrium in
Assiniboine Park, 55 Pavilion Crescent. (Winnipeg Free Press 30 Mar

WILDER, William
Price (Bill), Lt, RCNVR - respected business leader and
philanthropist, passed away peacefully in Toronto on Saturday, March
23, 2019 at the age of 96 years. Among his many achievements, Bill
was a former chief executive of Wood Gundy, one of Canada's most
prestigious securities firms and now part of CIBC, and of Consumers
Gas, at the time the country's biggest natural-gas distributor. He
served on the boards of numerous other blue-chip companies and, as a
philanthropist, was among the biggest individual donors to Upper
Canada College in Toronto. A building at Harvard University is named
after him. As Bill himself once noted: "I have been guided by
the philosophy that you can't take everything out of life without
putting something back in. With the help of my wife, my family and
many friends and business associates, I have been fortunate to
accomplish both." Bill will be greatly missed by Billie, his
devoted wife of 65 years; and by their four children, Martha; Bill
Jr.; Tom and his wife, Sylvie; and Andy and his wife, Lori. He is
deeply mourned by his five grandchildren, Elle (Jeff), Mac, Meaghan,
Justin and Neal, who affectionately knew him as Buck, the nickname
given to Bill during his wartime service aboard a Royal Navy
destroyer. Bill will also be remembered with respect and affection
by a wide circle of friends and business associates across Canada,
and in the U.S. and England. Bill was born in Toronto on September
26, 1922 to William Edward and Marjorie Mary Wilder. He attended
Upper Canada College and had planned to become an architect. But the
depressed housing and construction industry in the late 1930s
encouraged him to enroll instead for a commerce degree at McGill.
However, his studies were interrupted by the Second World War. After
officer training at Royal Roads Naval College on Vancouver Island,
he was seconded to the Royal Navy and saw active duty as a
sub-lieutenant on the destroyer HMS Whitshed. One of Whitshed's
final war-time duties was to escort U.S troopships to the landing
ground at Utah Beach in northern France on D-Day, June 6 1944. Bill
returned to McGill after the war to complete his studies, and then
joined Wood Gundy, where his father had been a vice-president. He
started as a bond salesman, but decided in 1948 to pursue an MBA at
Harvard. He often described his two years at Harvard Business School
as a life-changing experience that was invaluable in equipping him
for his future career. Back at Wood Gundy, he was promoted to
executive vice-president in 1961 at the age of 38, and six years
later was named president and chief executive. Under Bill's
leadership, the firm came to play a dominant role in financing
Canada's big energy companies and their projects. At the same time,
it catered to a growing demand among individual Canadians for
professional portfolio management. A group of leading Canadian oil
and gas producers persuaded Bill to leave Wood Gundy in 1972 to head
the Canadian Arctic Gas consortium, which planned to build a natural
gas pipeline along the Mackenzie River Valley. But the
multi-billion-dollar project was put on hold five years later when a
Royal Commission recommended that construction be delayed for at
least 10 years. Bill moved on to become chairman and chief executive
of Consumers Gas, Canada's biggest natural gas distributor. He also
served on the boards of Royal Bank of Canada, Canada Life Assurance,
Noranda Mines and Maclean-Hunter, among others. Following his
retirement in 1984, he became an investor in and chairman of
Creemore Springs Brewery, one of Ontario's most successful craft
breweries. Outside the corporate world, Bill was a life member of
the Toronto Club, and served a two-year term as chairman and
president of the York Club. The Toronto Club bestowed its annual
honouree award on him in 2014. He also served on the board of The
Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto for 16 years, and chaired the
corporate division of the United Way. In 2017, he was awarded the
Order of Canada and was also inducted into the Investment Hall of
Fame, and in 2018 he received The Legion of Honour from France in
recognition of his war service. Bill was a lifelong and active
member of Timothy Eaton Memorial Church. He said that his faith
played a crucial role "in instilling the sense of purpose and
discipline that I believe are essential elements in a life well
lived." Bill found tranquility and relaxation at Silo Hill, his
farm near Uxbridge, north-east of Toronto, and at his summer cottage
in St. Andrews, New Brunswick. He spent most weekends, especially
during his retirement years, at the farm, where he enjoyed raising
beef cattle, and walking his dogs -- most recently, his devoted
black Labrador Bob. Bill's family wishes to thank Jenny Lee Biso and
Elmo Romano for their outstanding home care. A celebration of Bill's
life will be held at Timothy Eaton Memorial Church (230 St. Clair
Avenue West, Toronto) on Wednesday, May 8 at 10:00 a.m., with a
reception to follow at The York Club (135 St. George Street). (Globe
