SHELLEY, Ralph Thomas, AB SD, V13261, RCNVR, died - 21 Dec 1940, HMCS VISION - Son of John Thomas Shelley and Ellen Shelley; husband of Lorraine Esther Shelley, all of Calgary, AB.

 

Able Seaman R. T. Shelley was lost overboard from HMCS VISON. Ralph was removing a damaged jack staff, while the men were on the forecastle deck the ship pitch and it was reported a man overboard. A life buoy was thrown by the Coxswain from the bridge deck. The Ship as was brought about in the direction where the man was last seen, this took approximately three to five minutes. His cap was observed floating on the water. A search in the vicinity was held, when it was considered there was no hope of recovering the man the search was called off.

 

Ralph's brother William Henry Shelley died in the sinking of HMCS WEYBURN on 22 Feb 1943.  His brothers brothers, Henry A. Shelley and Robert Shelley also served in the RCNVR.
